Tucking his hands deeper into the pockets of his coat, Chris slid past the queue outside the club with what seemed like barely a glance. Really he’d taken it all in from half a block away, prepared for the things he knew lurked in those dark depths to reach out. He imagined them pressed against the border of the place, luring in people too blind to see, offering up oblivion, bliss, just for a little while.
His shoulders wanted to stiffen as he diverted around the solid lump of the bouncer in his path, but he forced them down. Just a man out for an evening stroll in a town that seemed made for them. Not the man who’d succumbed to those depths, bleeding out what had festered inside of him for a handful of years. That night he’d walked from there feeling lighter, like there was only a shell of who he was now, room left for something new to grow on that scorched ground. Chris offered up a faint, polite smile to a woman in platform boots and a dress that flowed around a doll like form as she skimmed past him. She returned it, but there was something almost calculating in her hazel eyes. Now that was a look he recognised, and he was glad to avoid.
Half a dozen yards past the end of the queue and that back alley, and it was almost possible to ignore that constant itch between his shoulder blades. Chris tugged a hand free, tugging at his collar as he crossed the street, heading away from that dark corner, to somewhere brighter, somewhere filled with life instead of reeking of death. Mystic Falls was like that, like the town was scattered with pools of light and dark, life and death. Instinctively most worked their way towards those spots that didn’t put a shiver down their spines. Huddling together, listening to that primitive voice in their minds that reminded them of what lurked out beyond the fires.
The lights that shone beyond the Diner’s windows were one of those fires. A lure in the dim evening. The sun had gone down half an hour go, the leeching of the warmth from the air driving people in away from the sidewalk tables to the tables and booths inside. Chris headed straight towards them, catching the door as a family made their way out. The dad nodded at him, the kids chirping brightly at him. ”Hi,” he murmured with a nod, flashing them a friendlier smile than the girl in the queue at the club got. They reminded him of his own family, of Victoria and Allison when the weight of the world hadn’t been resting on his daughter’s shoulders.
He slipped in through the door, letting it swing closed shut behind him. Chris tugged his phone from his pocket, checking for messages from Allison to let him know she was alright. She wasn’t a child anymore and even after all that had happened he didn’t expect her to let him know where she was every minute of the day, but those concerns were always going to linger, especially here where peace wasn’t anywhere near guaranteed.
Nothing.
Greying brows furrowed as he tucked his phone away and looked back up. She probably wasn’t gonna be home for dinner, but he’d grab something for her as she left … in case … The tumble of dark hair in a booth at the back had him pausing. Allison. Alone. Maybe. Brushing off the look from the guy behind the counter, Chris made his way towards the back. Assuming you were looking at your own daughter was foolish when she was a doppelganger twice over. He’d never imagined the Argents had been snared in the supernatural world for that long, but there were still things he was learning about his own family every day. ”Hi.” His voice slipped out almost flat as he stopped beside the table and got a good enough look at the woman at the table to know that it wasn’t his daughter he was looking at.
The doppelgangers might have been identical in every way, but it was a father’s instinct that told him this wasn’t Allison. Chris slipped onto the bench seat opposite her all the same, only briefing glancing around to make sure that Athena was alone. ”Do you mind?” he asked, gesturing to himself with the menu he snagged from the holder on the table. It wasn’t like she’d extended any sort of invitation to him before he’d sat down in front of his ancient ancestor.

Athena had never planned on staying in Mystic Falls this long. She had originally made her way to the town while she was following a lead on the group she had been thwarting for years but she had decided to stay when she had realised that she had family in town. Learning that Amara was still alive after all had come as a complete shock to the system but Athena knew that she wasn’t going anywhere when not only her sister was in town but Lukas was as well. She had raised the boy after Tatia had died and she had been there for him when he started his own family. Add to that the fact that the Mikaelsons were in town and the truth was that Athena really did have a lot to stick around for. She would be lying if she said it didn’t get annoying being mistaken for Allison as often as she did, she had been making a name for herself in her own right but there were so many around town who knew her doppelganger and just couldn’t seem to tell them apart. Athena had known about her doppelgangers for a long time, she had come across a few of them over the centuries and she couldn’t deny that she was proud of their legacy even if they were an unintended consequence of drinking the immortality elixir. Seeing her own doppelgangers was one thing but the truth was that for the longest time seeing her sister’s doppelgangers had been downright painful but finally those wounds seemed to be healing and she really was glad about that. Building a life for herself in the town wasn’t something that she had ever thought that she would end up doing but she was trying her best. In all honesty it felt good to put down roots for a while, Athena knew that it was inevitable that she would have to move on one day since sooner or later people would start to realise that she wasn’t ageing like her doppelganger was but until then it wasn’t such a bad place to live and she knew that there was good that she could do in the town. There were plenty of hunters in Mystic Falls and there were supernaturals who were doing their best to keep those around them safe as well but none of them had her level of experience and she knew that if she was going to make a difference anywhere then it would be here. There always seemed to be a new threat right around the corner in Mystic Falls and even though Athena hadn’t been human herself for a long time, she knew how important it was that they were kept safe and remained in the dark about the supernatural world. Too many people in town knew about it already and she knew that chaos would ensue if the group she had been hunting succeeded in revealing the supernatural world so she knew that she would do everything in her power to stop that from happening. That day she had just finished working a case when she realised how hungry she was. Athena had never really bothered learning to cook since it was always easier to grab something while she was out and as she headed to the diner she couldn’t help but feel like she had definitely earned it this time. Finding an empty table, she was glancing over the menu when someone spoke and she looked up to find her doppelganger’s father standing before her. “Hi,” she said before turning her attention back to the menu, certain that he at least would be able to tell them apart given his connection to Allison. She had expected him to move on but before she knew it he was sitting down opposite her and asking if she minded before grabbing a menu. “I guess not,” she said, lifting her gaze from the menu to study him carefully for a moment. “What can I do for you?”CHRIS ARGENT

There was an exhaustion that came with recognition and Chris imagined that Athena – up close he was certain it was her and not Marie Jeanne – had felt it like a constant companion since she’d arrived in Mystic Falls. Folks calling out, being overly friendly because they were familiar with one version of her face and didn’t know enough to realise that it was like a photocopy. So much of the original was there, but with each copying something small and subtle changed. Some would say that was nurture playing it’s part, rather than it all being controlled by nature. What came before, what came during, changed you.
Chris supposed he was the walking proof of that. Argent. The name and its legacy had practically been imprinted on his bones at birth. Everything was done Gerard’s way, tradition passed down, pressed on him until he’d been unsure where the family’s original intent stopped and his father’s arrogance began. Now there was a clear dividing line, once carved by grief and loss, and despite the name still carrying a sort of infamy, he had no intention of letting it fill in again. Just as Athena wasn’t his daughter, he wasn’t his father. And that made what was going on in town far harder to deal with.
Deciding to slide into the booth with his ancestor hadn’t been about dealing with that, although Chris wondered how far back that altruistic view of saving the world stretch, it had been a genuine moment of mistaken identity to start with, replaced by a desire to build up some of those bridges that crossed that no man’s land of heartbreak that stretched right through his life. Recognition had sparked in those familiar dark eyes, enough that he knew he wasn’t about to have to introduce himself to her.
He reached out for a menu of his own, tapping it lightly against his left hand as he studied her lightly. ”It’s appreciated,” Chris said lightly. A low hum rolled out of him as she bluntly asked what she could do for him as she looked up. Ice blue eyes narrowed with humour, the corner of the menu tilting in Athena’s direction in emphasis. ”This wasn’t some sort of ‘I need something from you’ request. If it was, I’d find another way. Something more official, if you get my meaning.” Given the rumours that had filtered through to him after her and her sister had appeared in town, that was still a possibility, but he had no intention of laying out all his current troubles on the table for her.
After a moment, he glanced down at the menu again. It wasn’t that different from the one at the Grill. Folks in Mystic Falls obviously had a taste for burgers and steaks, milkshakes and pretty decent pie. ”You know who I am?” Chris asked lightly as he looked up at her. ”I take it you’ve crossed paths with my daughter at some point too. I … when I saw you, I thought for a moment that she might have been you, but it became obvious fast enough.” Allison wouldn’t have stayed in the booth with him. With the way things currently were with them, they were like ships in the night, passing each other with barely an acknowledgement. ”Are you honestly OK with this?” He gestured between them again. She was perfectly within her rights to say no, and he wasn’t Gerard, he wouldn’t push the connection because he could trace his bloodline back two thousand years to her.

Athena had known that some of her descendants were in Mystic Falls when she moved there but if she was honest she was surprised that she had gone this long without crossing paths with them that often. She had met Allison and Marie-Jeanne once but that was it, otherwise she had been keeping to herself and living her own life. Athena had moved to Mystic Falls for a reason and she was still working on that now but she had also realised that she might as well have some fun while she was there. She didn’t know too many people, after all it wasn’t easy to let too many people in when you knew that you were going to outlive all of them, but she was trying to do better this time around. She had been on her own for such a long time and even though she was fine on her own it didn’t change the fact that it was a lonely way of living her life and she knew that she might as well try and make some connections with people for a change even if the outcome was ultimately still the same. When she drank the immortality elixir she had been solely focused on killing Qetsiyah for taking Amara away from her, she hadn’t truly appreciated that she would end up spending an eternity alone so she knew that she needed to try and turn things around. Hunting always made Athena feel hungry and that day had been a particularly tough hunt even for her so she couldn’t help but feel like she had earned something to eat this time around. Normally the Grill was her go to place but she had decided to shake things up a little bit that day and head to the diner instead. She hadn’t thought that she would end up running into anyone while she was there but she hadn’t even placed her order when a man was sitting down opposite her and she recognised him immediately. Athena hadn’t made a habit of deliberately reaching out to her descendants but she still kept tabs on them so she knew exactly who the man sat across from her was – Chris Argent, the father of her latest doppelganger. As he said this wasn’t a case of needing something from her, Athena relaxed slightly. “I’m glad to hear it because today has been a crazy day and I was looking forward to a peaceful meal,” she nodded. That didn’t mean that she would turn down the company if he wanted to stick around but if he did want something from her then it was definitely going to have to wait. As Chris asked if she knew who he was, Athena nodded. “I do. I may not have reached out to your family but I’ve always kept an eye on you from a distance,” she shrugged. She knew that she could have reached out but with Gerard and Kate especially she had known that she would never find acceptance among the family so it had seemed easier to keep her distance. “I’m glad you were able to tell the difference, not everyone can but then again they’re not Allison’s father,” she said gently. “I have met Allison but I haven’t had much to do with her,” she admitted. She hadn’t wanted to intrude in their lives so she had kept to herself instead. As he asked whether she was ok with this, she thought about it for a moment. “If you tell anyone I said this I’ll have to kill you but I’ve been on my own for a long time and I’m ready to try doing things differently this time,” she said, studying his reaction as she spoke. “I didn’t know if it would be weird for you or anyone else given how much Allison and I look alike.”CHRIS ARGENT

Setting the menu down, Chris held his hands up in a gesture of surrender, an added reassurance to Athena that he hadn’t turned up to drag her away from her dinner. There’d plenty too many nights to count where he’d returned home after a long and difficult hunt and had needed to swallow his exhaustion to put on that false front for Allison. He’d sworn she was too young to know what the family business was and to feel the weight on her shoulders. Maybe he’d drawn that decision out for too long, left her unprepared for what would happen when they eventually returned to Beacon Hills, but Chris was glad he’d been able to give her a normal childhood for the most part. She didn’t have to worry that the monster under the bed was real, or spend years terrified of what might have been lurking out there in the night.
Now it was all different, the worst had happened to Allison and Chris knew that he couldn’t shield his daughter any longer. He could let the exhaustion show around her and knew that she’d understand. His only wish was that he could patch things up with her, rebuilding the bridges that left the two of them distance. Maybe then he’d have been eating with her instead of a woman who bore her face – the first to bear her face. ”I’ll do my best not to disturb it,” he promised. ”I’m willing to listen if you wanted to talk that craziness through though.” Maybe it wasn’t dinner table conversation, not even in this town. Chris picked the menu back up, studying it as though diner food wasn’t similar all around the world.
After they’d learned that Allison was a doppelganger he’d spent as much time as possible researching it. Marie-Jeanne appearing in town had provided more information, but there were still voids in what he would’ve liked to know – ones he wouldn’t try and fill tonight. Chris huffed out a breath, rimmed with amusement at the idea that he hadn’t been the only one researching. ”I’m not sure if that’s reassuring. Just since we’ve been here or before?” Had she seen what Gerard had been doing? It was a far cry from what Marie-Jeanne and Henri had tried to do. If it had been while Gerard was still active there was a chance he would’ve tried to use her, just as he had Allison.
The corner of his mouth lifted with a touch more of that amusement. Chris pushed the menu aside again, knowing that he’d just order automatically when the waitress arrived. ”She never said,” he said lightly. ”But we haven’t spoken much lately.” Especially not about hunting. He’d nodded lightly at the faint compliment that Athena had bestowed on him though. No matter what had happened, he did still know his daughter and had felt it somewhere deep in his heart that it hadn’t been her when he’d first caught a glimpse of Athena.
Knowing who he was looking at, he would’ve accepted it if she’d told him she wanted no company. He wasn’t ready to push and he wasn’t sure she’d be receptive if he ever tried to. ”Your secret’s safe with me,” Chris promised, his hands coming up again. ”Maybe a few years ago it would’ve been weird, but the things we’ve seen since … no, it wouldn’t have been strange. You’re aware that there are other doppelgangers here?” He wasn’t about to name the rest of the latest generation of them, but given that they’d all sprung from that same moment in time, Chris would’ve laid money on Athena knowing exactly who they all were.

Athena had known what she was letting herself in for when she’d made her way to Mystic Falls, she had known that her descendants were living in town including at least one of her doppelgangers and she had also known that doppelgangers of her sister and Silas were there as well. Athena had been alive for thousands of years and she had come across a lot of doppelgangers during that time but the truth was that for the most part she had kept her distance from them just like she had kept her distance from everyone else. She had become a hunter after her sister died, she had taken it upon herself to try and keep the world safe and make sure that news about the supernatural world didn’t become public knowledge. There had been more than a few close calls over the years and she would be the first to admit that she’d had to do some things that she wasn’t proud of to keep the supernatural world secret but she had done her best and so far it seemed to have worked. There was always a new threat out there or a new group wanting to change the world to suit what they wanted it to be and Athena had learned better than to think that that was ever going to change. People were short sighted for the most part, they saw what they wanted to and thought that their image of the future was better than anyone else’s but most didn’t look at the long term effects their actions would have. Athena had seen empires crumble under leaders who thought that they knew better than anyone else and she had brought a few of them to the ground herself so she knew that it was just a case of keeping up the fight. It had been the Dread Doctors that had drawn Athena to Mystic Falls in the first place but there were other reasons why she had decided to stay. She had family in town and old friends in the form of the Mikaelsons. For the first time in a long time she had people around that she cared about and she wasn’t in a hurry to give that up in favour of being alone once more. She hadn’t expected one of the Argents to end up joining her but she had known that Chris would be able to tell the difference between her and his daughter at least which was definitely a good thing as far as she was concerned. “Mhmm, sure you will,” she nodded as Chris said that he would do his best not to disturb her meal. Athena couldn’t deny that she was surprised by his offer to talk through what she had faced that day and she found herself studying him carefully, trying to decide whether there were any strings attached. She always kept her telepathy in check unless it was something that she needed to use, she didn’t like invading the thoughts of others so she knew that it was much better this way. She wasn’t used to having anyone to talk to about her hunts or anything else really but this time it might not be such a bad thing. “Join me for a meal and I might just take you up on that,” she said, nodding to the menu in his hands. There was a part of her that knew that getting the input of someone else about the strange things going on in Mystic Falls might not be such a bad thing but if he was going to stick around then Athena knew that she certainly wasn’t going to eat alone. Chris’s next words were enough to draw a smile to her lips. “To start with I only checked in every century or so to see how our line was doing. I didn’t think I had any right to do more than that,” Athena shrugged. She had let her grief consume her after her sister died and even though she’d gone on to get married and have children of her own, there had always been a void there that even they weren’t able to fill. It was that void that had spurred her to drink the immortality elixir and become what she was and it had driven her to kill Qetsiyah. She hadn’t felt like she’d had any right to return to her family after that and it had held her back from looking in on her line for quite some time but taking Lukas in after his mother died had been the first step in changing that. “In the last few decades I’ve been keeping a closer eye on you all. I saw what Gerard and Kate were doing but I had my hands full with other things. I still kept tabs on them in case you needed my help but you and the others had it all under control,” she added. They had stepped up and put a stop to every threat that had come their way and Athena couldn’t deny that she was proud of them for that. “I’ve had somewhat mixed reactions from our line in the past,” she said, a rueful smile forming on her face as she looked over at him. She knew that it was to be expected considering that she was an Immortal and her descendants were hunters but she never knew how they would take it if she reached out and for some reason being rejected by people who shared her blood wasn’t something that sat well with her. “I wouldn’t take it personally that she didn’t tell you, it wasn’t exactly a long conversation,” she shrugged. When it came to her sister’s doppelgangers and Silas’s she knew what to do but when it came to her own it had always been that much more awkward to say the least. “I know, you’ve always been one to keep your word,” Athena nodded. She may not have reached out to Chris but she had done her homework on him and she knew that he was trustworthy despite the fact that he was Gerard’s son. As he said that it wouldn’t have been weird now, Athena found herself nodding. “In that case perhaps it’s time we start working together,” she offered, knowing that it would certainly be easier than trying to do everything alone. As Chris mentioned the other doppelgangers, Athena nodded. “Of course. Elena Gilbert, Allison, Stefan Salvatore, Marie-Jeanne, Tatia and even Katherine Pierce if the reports are true,” she said, listing them off with ease. “I haven’t seen any sign of the latest from Silas’s line but he’ll be out there somewhere. It seems those who look like my sister and Silas always end up in the same place sooner or later even if they don’t always end up together.”CHRIS ARGENT

It wouldn’t be the first time he’d spent a meal discussing the things that went bump in the night. Before he’d had a family of his own meals had always been all business. Talking about the most violent and disgusting things as the meatloaf had been served up. Maybe Kate had revelled in it, but Chris had found it something he was glad to leave behind when they’d had Allison. Suddenly he had an excuse not to bring all of that into what should’ve been a safe space from it. Even now he was glad, in a way, to push it aside at home. Allison might not’ve been there much, but when she was he didn’t want to continually hammer home those reminders of what had happened to her. The woman in front of him might have looked like his daughter, but that was where the resemblance ended. He hadn’t mourned her death, hadn’t fought to try and keep her from a world that he’d known even before that had happened, could chew her up and spit her out.
Chris made a low sound in his throat, dipping his head in an acceptance of her offer. He glanced through the menu, using it just as something to look at rather than actually considering what to pick out – when the time came he’d just order on instinct. His pale eyes came up from the menu as Athena admitted that it wasn’t the first time she’d checked in on their family. ”There are probably some who’d argue against that. You’re an Argent, no matter how far down the line we got the name, that’s enough to make you one of us.” And it would’ve been enough to have Gerard trying to use her too. The thought of what he could’ve done if Scott hadn’t outsmarted him soured his appetite.
And there it went again as she mentioned Gerard and Kate. Chris stiffened in his seat. Could things have turned out differently if Athena had chosen to step in before things had gotten truly bad. ”I don’t know if I’d say its entirely under control. Gerard might be out of commission for now, but Kate?” His lips pressed together hard enough to blanch them. Something horrific had happened to his sister after she’d tried to destroy the pack, but he couldn’t say for sure what had happened, if she would become a thorn in his side again. ”Times change,” Chris reminded her. ”I’m not like anything like my father, and Allison is a better person than I’ll ever be.” He hadn’t always been able to show that sort of pride to his daughter, but it was there, and he knew better than try to hide that sort of thing from an immortal.
He wished things could’ve been different with his daughter now, but there was too much water, and blood, under the bridge for that. Chris’ smile was brief and tight. He inclined his head at Athena. ”We don’t talk about much at all these days,” he admitted, knowing Athena could probably read between those lines. He’d done his best to keep his daughter safe, but it had been like walking a tight rope and more than once he’d wobbled. Chris let his hands settle back to the table as Athena nodded at him. No matter how hard he’d tried to be a good man, it hadn’t always worked out right for him. This time was going to be different and that meant letting people like Athena in. ”I’d say it’s past time.” He’d asked about the other doppelgangers and Athena had reeled them off. Making a low sound in his throat, Chris nodded. ”I’d say he’s probably better off not being here. Do you think Katherine Pierce is going to make trouble for them?” With the Mikaelsons here, it would seem as though Katherine had every reason to create mayhem, although things had been quiet on that front for a while now.

Athena had been on her own for a long time, she had raised Lukas after Tatia died and she had been there to support him when he became a father himself but otherwise she had kept her distance from everyone for the most part. She had checked in on her family every so often so she knew what had happened with the Argent family but she had left them to resolve their own internal conflicts as much as possible. She had seen what Gerard and Kate were doing but she had trusted Chris and the others to resolve things the right way while she dealt with other matters. She had heard what had happened to Allison as well and her heart went out to the girl but she was back now and Athena could only hope that the girl was doing better. Everyone in their family seemed to end up going through so much and Athena wished that she could spare them from that but they were warriors and she couldn’t deny that she was proud of them. As Chris said she was an Argent no matter how far down the line they were from her, Athena shook her head. “You don’t understand,” she sighed. “When I thought my sister Amara had died I was consumed by grief. I found the immortality elixir that had been left for me, drank it and then abandoned my husband and children so I could get vengeance against Qetsiyah. I think these days you would call it depression but by the time I snapped out of it I had become what I am and killed Qetsiyah so I didn’t feel like I had any right to return to my family,” she explained. “I thought they were better off without me and deep down I’ve always thought the rest of you are as well.” It had been different with Lukas, he hadn’t had anyone to look after him after his mother died so she didn’t regret being there for him and then his son in turn but when it came to the rest of her family she knew that it was perhaps shame that had kept her away along with the notion that they would never truly accept her as she was. “For now she’s out of the picture and that’s not a bad thing,” Athena nodded. She knew what had happened with Kate and she had a feeling it probably wasn’t the last the family had seen of her but Athena knew that she would be there to help them this time if they needed it. “I know you’re nothing like your father. I’ve seen a few family members like the two of you over the years but you’re a rare breed,” she admitted. It was people like Chris who had always been more accepting of her and Athena had always been grateful to them for that. “I don’t know about that, you seem like a good person to me,” she shrugged. He had fought so hard against his father and sister and there weren’t many who would have done that. “I’m sure that will change, you’re all each other has,” Athena said gently. They could count on each other and that was something Athena hoped that neither of them would take for granted. “She’s growing up and she might need her space now but you’ll always be her dad.” Athena had never truly bonded with her own children given what had happened with her sister but she could remember how protective she had become of Lukas when she took him in and she wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same for Chris with Allison. As Chris said it was past time they started working together, Athena felt a smile touch her lips. “You should probably know that I’m not very good at playing well with others,” she said, knowing that she needed to be honest with him. She was used to working alone for the most part and even when she worked with various groups, she always preferred to tackle things on her own as often as she could. “You’re probably right. Hopefully he’ll be able to stay out of all of this at least for a while,” Athena nodded. If he didn’t know about the supernatural then it would probably be much safer for him if it stayed that way. “It wouldn’t surprise me if she did. She always has her own agenda and if she is risking sticking around with the Mikaelsons in town then chances are she has something up her sleeve.”CHRIS ARGENT

Hearing what grief had driven Athena to do, Chris felt his own grip at his heart. Losing Victoria had turned the path slippery, but Allison’s death had left it impossible to avoid. He had clung to the bottle, his ethics thrown out the window. The world could handle its own problems, he had given enough of his to save others. If he could have laid hands on the creature that had been in control of the oni, Chris knew he would’ve stopped at nothing to destroy it in the same way Athena had taken the life of the woman who she believed had taken her sister’s life.
His lips pinched together and Chris shook his head as Athena admitted she thought they were better off without her. ”Grief can drive you to do things you would never do otherwise. It can put blood on your hands, it can drag you down to depths you think you can’t escape, but it is not the end,” he promised her. Athena had been fighting the memory of what she had done for centuries, long before the Mikaelsons had walked in this new world, but he could see she still carried the burden of what she had done. ”If there was ever a time your family truly needed you, it would be now. This town has more threats than we can handle.” And while Athena might not have been ready to embrace truly being an Argent, he knew she continued to fight just as hard as any of them to keep humanity safe.
Chris made a low sound of agreement, trying to force himself to relax at the reassurance that his sister was not one of their problems. If Kate had been able to complete her plans, the supernatural in Beacon Hills would have been practically wiped out. Her hatred had driven her to try and burn the Hales in their home, like ants in a nest, and that hatred had spilled over when Scott McCall had gotten himself caught up in what was happening. Chris let out a long breath, dragging a hand over his jaw. ”For now, who knows how long it’ll be before she decides that she isn’t done though.” It wasn’t a question of if Kate would be back, but when. Gerard wouldn’t back down either. The man was rotting inside from the bite that had failed and still his mind was spinning with the thought of revenge. ”I’ll take that as a compliment,” Chris muttered. ”The only reason I didn’t follow their path was my daughter.” Even before Allison had found out about the supernatural, she was his reason for everything he did. After she had found out she had become his conscience, his reason for trying to change the crooked path his family had taken.
”I hope so,” Chris murmured. He should have been the one reassuring others, reassuring Allison that life didn’t have to be the way it had been, that they could move beyond what had happened. His daughter had stopped listening to him though, the arguments drifting in so often that they she had taken to avoiding him to stop them. A wry smile touched his lips. ”I’ve never been good at allowing her space. I push her too hard about living up to her potential, I’m too protective. I’m not sure when she’ll be able to see past that.” But he wouldn’t give up on trying to make it happen. There were enough similarities between him and Athena appearing that Chris finally found himself chuckling. ”Allison would tell you I’m the same. My trust isn’t easy to earn.” Thanks to Gerard and Kate even blood wasn’t enough to earn it now. Over the centuries that had become twisted, even being a doppelganger wasn’t enough to avoid that, although Chris hoped some could, including Allison. ”You haven’t been tracking her as a threat, though?” He would’ve laid money on her having been keeping an eye on any potential dangers in Mystic Falls.
