– he has no notion of loving people by halves –
River hated the fact that he didn't have a job at the moment and he had complained about it to his friend on more than one occasion. When his friend revealed that they were looking for a waiter at the Mystic Grill, River knew that he needed to give it a try at the very least, see if they accept him. He knew that working that job was a dead-end, so he was still going to look for other jobs on the side while working there. He just needs something to keep him preoccupied and also save him from having to ask his parents for money. He was too old for that now. He also wanted to always be prepared in case Krista asked for something because he hated turning his sister down.
Maybe also a part of him wanted to spoil her a bit with a nice meal every now and then. He didn't want them to survive off of burgers and milkshakes, after all. So, he tried it out and was told that they'll give him a call in a few days if he's accepted. Turns out, they did give him a call and told him to drop by next Monday for his first shift. He had been working there ever since. It was Friday today.
River wasn't exactly excellent at the job as he often got nervous, especially when it was a table full of people but hey, he was slowly getting better and that's all that mattered, right?
"Hey, quit dreaming. Table seven is ready to order." He heard the voice of his co-worker and it was enough to make him blink out of his thoughts as he reached for his small notepad in the front pocket of his apron and took a big breath before he released it slowly. "Okay, I'm going. Wish me luck." His co-worker gave him an odd look at that because taking orders was considered the easy part. Not for someone with anxiety, though, and oh boy did River have a lot of anxiety. River made his way over to the new customer, his lips stretching into his best 'customer service' smile as he clicked the top of the pen. "H–Hey." Oh great. He's only greeting the customer and he's stuttering already. "Welcome to – uh – to..." River made a wild gesture to his apron which had the logo of the Grill as well as the name of it. "Mystic Grill. I'm River and I'll be your, uhm, waiter today. What c–can I get started for you today?" River dropped his pen as soon as he was done with his greeting. "Crap, sorry." He bent down to pick up his pen, his balance shifting for a moment as he reached under the table and when he attempted to straighten his back, he hit his head on the underside of the table. "Crap!" River finally got out from under the table, rubbing the back of his head with a wince coloring his features before he held his pen proudly. "Got it, sorry about all that. Slippery fingers... I don't know why I just said that. Sorry. Again." River made a face as he finally pressed his lips together to shut up for once.

━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
IT had been a few weeks and Evelyn hadn't had anymore encounters with her father of with any of his men. Which worried her immensely, because what was he up to? What made him drop off the face of the planet? Go completely radio silent? It wasn't like her father to suddenly go silent, to not follow through on his plans. The very fact that he wasn't actively searching for her or harassing her worried her and it certainly didn't help her paranoia, which had only amplified tenfold. Evelyn was still constantly looking over her shoulder, always looking for someone watching her. She had lived her entire life in fear of her father and that still hadn't changed. It probably would never change until he was as good as gone and more than that, she knew he was gone and out of her life forever. Just because he hadn't resurfaced didn't mean he wasn't actively planning her demise. Her father was cunning, manipulative, and power hungry. He wouldn't stop his search for her, not until he got what he wanted or he was dead. Which was the goal: for William Monet to be rid of this world forever.
She could only be so lucky.
Sitting in the Mystic Grill, Evelyn waited for her waiter to come on over so she could get her order in. She was starving and was desperately craving a cheeseburger, or anything greasy honestly. The click of a pen snapped her out of her thoughts and she looked up to see a skinny brown haired male approach her table to take her order. 'Welcome to – uh – to... Mystic Grill. I'm River and I'll be your, uhm, waiter today. What c–can I get started for you today?' She could tell the guy was new, she hadn't seen him working her before and she had been in town for a while now. River seemed nervous and giving as though he was stuttering his way through his welcome speech, that was even more evident. But she didn't mind, she was patient and knew first hand what it was like to work in customer service, hell, she did it now with working in the local coffee shop. Working with customers wasn't as easy as it was cracked up to be.
As she went to open her mouth to speak, River dropped his pen. 'Crap, sorry.' He said as he bent down to pick up the pen that he had dropped. As soon as he went to stand up after having grabbed the pen, he hit his head on the bottom of the table. 'Got it, sorry about all that. Slippery fingers... I don't know why I just said that. Sorry. Again.' Evelyn smiled kindly as she waved off his apology. "Are you ok?" She asked, given as though it had seemed like he had hit his head pretty damn hard. "New?" She questioned, she flipped through the menu nonchalantly before looking back up at River. "I just ask because I haven't seen you here before." She said in an attempt to change the subject entirely as he had just, well, embarrassed himself. Although she wouldn't comment on it. She knew damn well what it was like to mess up in front of a customer, my god did she know.

– he has no notion of loving people by halves –
River breathed out a soft sigh which came out a lot shakier than anticipated. Maybe he wasn't meant for hospitality jobs, after all. He grimaced at the thought that he'd cost the Mystic Grill a customer due to how unprofessional he was, but the other in front of him actually seemed pretty nice. "I'm okay. Yeah. All good! Sorry about all... that." River made a wild gesture to his theatrics from earlier, his expression turning into an apologetic one. God, who even says ace anymore?
River made a sheepish expression when she asked if he was new. "That obvious?" He tapped on the cover of the notebook he was holding before his expression turned into an understanding one when he realized that she wasn't asking for the reason he had in mind. "Yeah, um, I started working here a few days ago." River revealed with a quick nod of his head following as he shifted weight from one foot to the other, his eyes relaxing on the other in front of him, waiting for her to find what she'd like to order. He was in no hurry whatsoever. "I thought I was doing well until, well... Until now, basically." River rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, a breathless chuckle falling from his lips not long after. "I'm River, by the way." He introduced himself before soon realizing that he had already done that earlier when he gave the usual greeting. "I already said that before, I dunno why I just said it again." River pressed his lips together to shut himself up effectively because wow, he was definitely talking a lot and he didn't want to annoy her.

━ you knew somewhere deep it was too good to be true ━
EVELYN had been new at plenty of jobs throughout her life time, so she totally got the nerves that came along with being in a new position at a new place. The last thing she wanted was to make him feel bad for being new, he couldn't help it and he was still in the learning process. So, of course she was going to be nice and helpful in any way that she could. Besides, this was one of the most normal interactions she has had in quite a while. An interaction that didn't involve her having to look over her shoulder or worry that the person had some kind of ulterior motive, or even worse, one that included people that worked for her psychotic father. Thankfully this was just an old fashioned interaction between a worker and a customer. Easy enough. At least she hoped so, the last thing she needed was for things to take a turn for the worse. All she wanted was one normal ass day. That's it. Was that so hard to get?
Apparently, in her life, it was.
'I'm okay. Yeah. All good! Sorry about all... that.' The guy said and she merely waved his apology off. "No need to apologize. It happens." She replied back softly, a smile apparent across her mouth. Poor guy, he was just doing his best and things didn't turn out how he had hoped they would for him on his first day. But that was alright, for the most part Evelyn was a patient person and this guy meant no harm at all. Just a bit clumsy is all. That was something she could work with. Evil and manipulation definitely was not.
'That obvious? Yeah, um, I started working here a few days ago.' Okay so not his first shift, but might as well be. Evelyn nodded, laughing at his question and held up two of her fingers and put them close together so that they were almost touching. "Just a bit." She retorted before putting her hand down back at her side and looked back down at the menu to try and decide what she wanted to eat. 'I thought I was doing well until, well... Until now, basically.' Evelyn peeked upwards from her menu and shook her head in disagreement. "Nonsense, you're doing just fine." She said, waving off his negativity of himself and his service altogether. Was it superb service? Not exactly, but she could tell that he was trying and that's all that mattered.
"Nice to officially meet you, River. I'm Evelyn, but you can call me Evie." She said, introducing herself, not even letting the fact that he had introduced himself twice now phase her. She could tell that he was kicking himself for it just by the fact that his lips pressed together firmly as soon as those words left his lips. "Hmmm, there's so many options to choose. What's your recommendation?" She questioned as she continued looking down at the menu, trying to give him the chance to redeem himself of sorts and honestly to give him some practice in serving. Wouldn't hurt and she's worked as a server before so she totally got how nerve wracking it could be.
