when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
"Please, help my boy! He's still trapped in there. Please. He's all we have." Ethan looked over at the direction of the woman who was currently being treated for third-degree burns on her arms. Her husband had unfortunately succumbed to his severe burns not long after he'd been taken out of the house by Ethan, and Ethan couldn't help but feel a little guilty. If only he had just been a little quicker... There was a look on his Captain's face that made it clear that he was about to say something they weren't going to like very much. "We can't go in there. This house isn't going to take all of us in it." Ethan immediately shook his head, refusing to believe that there's nothing to do. "I can't lose any of you." He continued, and Ethan's shoulders sagged in defeat as his frown began digging deeper into his features. He glanced over at his husband then over at the house, gulping past the lump in his throat.
If he could sneak in and get the kid quickly, no one would get hurt. He'd be able to bring the kid back to his mom. She'd lost her husband, he can't let her lose her son, too.
Ethan hesitated as his feet gradually made him move closer to the house. He had a lot of people in his life now worth living for, but he had no plans of dying today. He wasn't going to leave them anytime soon. He was going to head in there and grab the kid quickly, it was going to be seamless. He'll make sure of it.
Ethan used the exact moment they were busy to sneak into the burning house and once he was inside, he used his radio. "Toni, I have to give this a try. I can't let that kid die in there. I won't take long, so please don't come after me, okay? You remember my promise, right? I won't leave you." Ethan heard his Captain's voice emit from the radio not long after, expressing his disappointment in Ethan for disobeying his orders and ordered him to come outside right now, but Ethan only stepped deeper into the house.
Ethan glanced up at the crack in the ceiling, the heavy smoke emitting from every direction making it really difficult for him to be able to see anything. "Shit." Ethan had to move and so, he began moving again. He could hear the sound of his Captain's voice telling him to evacuate, but he couldn't. Not without the kid that was trapped in the house. "Timmy!" Ethan called out, his hand raised to protect himself from falling debris as the ceiling threatened to give in. "Timmy, where are you?!" Ethan pushed open a door that led into an empty bedroom, he checked under the bed and inside the wardrobe, but he couldn't find any trace of a young kid anywhere. Just where the hell was he?
Ethan stopped in his tracks when he heard the sound of a boyish scream emitting from the room right next door, so he quickly started moving. "Timmy! Stay where you are! I hear you!" Ethan slammed himself into the door a couple of times when it refused to open when he tried to open it. Shit, shit, shit. He glanced up at the ceiling when yet another crack became prominent, the ceiling looking like it was about to give in any time soon. When he finally managed to open the door, the young boy was visible from under the bed, his foot still not hidden well enough. "Timmy!" Ethan reached for the boy to get him to look his way and when he did, he offered a mask that looked identical to Ethan's, it was to help him breathe better without inhaling the smoke emitting from every direction. "Put this on! I got you, kiddo." Ethan scooped the boy into his arms and rushed into the direction of the window where he attached a harness onto the boy's body and gently helped him out of the window, his team quickly helping the boy land safely onto his feet. It was soon Ethan's turn to do the same thing, barely meeting the eyes of his Captain, who was probably very disappointed in him for disobeying his orders. But did he expect any different from Ethan? How could he stop and do nothing?
But Ethan soon understood why his Captain had tried to stop him from entering. He was about to exit through the window when the ceiling suddenly caved in and when the ceiling crashed hard onto the already weakened floor, that also caved in and just like that, Ethan had disappeared out of view.

Antonio had dealt with some tough calls in this past but this one was proving to be among the more difficult ones. He had managed to pull a woman out of the fire and Ethan had brought her husband out but it was too late for him. Antonio had had the difficult job of telling the woman that her husband was gone and it was all he could do to try and keep her calm now as Diego checked her over. As she said that her son was still trapped in the house, Antonio’s heart ached for her. The house was unstable and even though he and Ethan could withstand a lot the truth was that he wasn’t sure that either of them would be able to get in and out of the house without drawing too much attention to themselves and the fact that they weren’t human. Looking up as their captain said that it wasn’t safe for them all to go in because he couldn’t lose them, Antonio caught the look on his husband’s face and he could tell that Ethan was disappointed but they had to follow orders. It was the woman his brother was treating who drew him out of his thoughts and Antonio turned his attention back to her, doing his best to keep her still while Diego worked and he was trying to console her as best he could. He was so distracted that he didn’t notice Ethan sneaking off until their captain’s voice sounded asking where he had gone. Looking around them, to begin with Ethan was sure that he couldn’t be too far away but soon enough Ethan’s voice was coming through the radio and Toni’s heart broke. He knew exactly what Ethan was doing and he would be lying if he said that he didn’t understand but he couldn’t deny that he was worried and suddenly it was like they were back fighting in the war and he was facing losing Ethan all over again only this time it wasn't just him he would be losing him, it was the kids too. Without even thinking about it his hand moved to his radio to respond. “You’d better not. Don’t you dare go where I can’t follow,” he warned before their captain’s voice came through the radio next telling Ethan to get out of there. Moving away from the woman Antonio’s eyes were fixed on the house, searching for any sign of Ethan, and the moment he felt a hand on his shoulder he knew who it belonged to. Without even looking over his shoulder he could tell that Diego had handed over the woman’s treatment to someone else and he placed his hand over Diego’s as Diego squeezed his shoulder. “He’s going to be okay, if anyone can make it through this he can,” Diego said and Toni nodded. “I know he can. This can’t kill him, not permanently, but I still hate the thought of him getting hurt.” That was something that Toni was never going to be comfortable with and from the look on his brother’s face he could tell that Diego understood. Those minutes waiting for Ethan to emerge were the longest of Toni’s life and relief flooded through him when Ethan appeared at the window with the boy. He helped the others with the boy before turning his gaze back up to his husband. “Your turn, get down here you crazy person,” he said before feeling his breath catch in his throat as Ethan disappeared from view. “Ethan,” he cried out, shocked into complete stillness for a moment before leaping into action. Heading back over to where he’d left his helmet and the rest of his gear he put on his mask and helmet as well as his gloves, ignoring the protests of the others that he was going to get himself killed too. Only Diego remained silent and as Toni looked over at his captain, his gaze was determined. “You can fire me if you want to Cap but he’s my husband, I’m not losing him,” he said fiercely, earning a nod from both his brother and their captain before heading into the house. “Ethan, call out! Where are you?” he shouted as loudly as he could once he was inside, choosing his route carefully as he headed in the direction of the opposite end of the house. It was slow going but he knew that he had to find his husband, there was no way he was going to leave him in there. Calling out for him a few more times, Toni finally reached the far side of the house and he started digging through the rubble looking for Ethan. “Thank goodness,” he breathed when he finally found him. “Ethan, can you hear me?” he asked. Ethan was still breathing but he seemed to be out cold and when no response came he picked his husband up and carried him out of the house, shielding him from the flames as best he could. Once they were outside he set Ethan down on the grass once they were a safe distance from the house and pulled off his gloves before ripping off first Ethan’s helmet and mask followed quickly by his own. His hand moved to rest against Ethan’s cheek as Diego immediately rushed over and started checking him over. “Come on baby, open your eyes. Please come back to me,” he pleaded as his free hand moved to take Ethan’s hand. ETHAN ALVAREZ

when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
Ethan felt a small smile appear on his lips at Toni's words. "I wouldn't dare." His voice soon came through the radio before his captain's voice interrupted him and started warning him about going into this, he told him it was too dangerous, and the whole house could crumble under him if he wasn't careful, but Ethan had abandoned the thought of leaving that poor boy in that fire because right now, all he could imagine was any of his family replacing that boy, he would want to do anything to save them. There was a woman crying and begging for her son and Ethan knew she had suffered and lost enough today, so he was going to get her kid back or die trying.
Ethan felt relief wash over him in floods when he managed to locate the young boy. He knew he was one step closer to getting out of that house before it crumbled right beneath his face. His captain was rarely ever wrong about something, but he hoped that just this once, he'd be wrong. Ethan managed to safely get the boy down, his lips stretching into a victorious grin as Toni's voice emitted from the radio. "Oh, you love me for it. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere." As soon as those words had left his lips, the ceiling gave away, and that was the last thing that Ethan felt.
From there, it was just ... quiet.
Ah. That feeling was a little too familiar.
But unlike last time, he didn't succumb to his wounds. There was something holding him back from doing so, a voice he could hear calling his name. Ethan wanted to reach out to it, and so he began moving closer to that voice. He knew it all too well. It was his husband, he was calling out to him, and he sounded so worried ... So scared.
He was breaking his promise right now, wasn't he? He couldn't make Toni go through the same pain again. He needed to get back to him.
So wake up, Ethan.
Wake up.
Ethan's eyes slowly fluttered open as he began regaining his consciousness, his eyes blinking slowly to get accustomed to his surroundings. Right away, his eyes found none other than Toni, and Ethan exhaled a sigh of relief. His husband looked so worried, and it made his heart ache. Was that the same expression he'd made back then? Or was it just grief and overwhelming pain? Ethan immediately wanted to make it better. "Oh hey, Diego." Ethan jokingly greeted while looking at Toni. "M'kidding." For a while, Ethan couldn't really feel anything, everything was so heightened, but he groaned when he tried to lift his arm, it soon became clear that it was broken. Though he knew it won't remain that way for long. "I'm so sorry for scaring you." Ethan whispered, his eyes barely open as the urge to fall asleep became a little too difficult for him to ignore, but he kept his eyes open, refusing to succumb to it because he might just not wake up any time soon until he's resurrected, and he would rather not go through that again. "M'okay, I promise. I'm not leaving you again."

Their jobs were risky, that was something that Toni had always known and it had become even more abundantly clear the day he hadn’t made it home after the cave collapsed. Wondering if he was ever going to make it home to his family was one of the hardest things he’d ever had to go through but he had been determined to make it home to them and in the end he had done. He could hear that same determination in his husband’s voice now as he explained why he had to do this even though their captain had said that the house wasn’t safe. Toni knew that this was just who Ethan was, he would put his life on the line for anyone without even thinking about it twice and that was one of the things that Toni loved most about him. He had already gone through the pain of seeing Ethan die once, though, and despite the fact that he knew that Ethan would come back this time Toni still hated the thought of anything like that happening to him again. It wasn’t just each other they had to think about now, they had the kids as well and if Ethan died here then they would all have to move and start over and he knew that none of them wanted that. In spite of his worries for his husband, Toni felt a smile form on his face as Ethan said that he wouldn’t dare. It was a promise Ethan had made him make what felt like a long time ago now and this time it was Ethan’s turn to make that promise. He had always been a man of his word and Toni knew that he could hold his husband to it. The wait for Ethan to emerge was agonising but seeing him was enough to make Toni feel like he could finally breathe again and he felt his chest loosen a little. “You know I do,” he chuckled as Ethan said that he loved him for it. He loved everything about Ethan, craziness and all, and even though Toni knew that the fire wouldn’t be enough to kill him permanently he was still relieved to see his husband again. That relief was short lived, however, and soon enough it was Toni’s turn to make the decision to head into the fire. Even without his captain’s blessing he knew that he would have gone in after Ethan but as the guy nodded, Toni knew that he needed to go before anyone changed their mind and tried to stop him. He was a dragon so he could fight his way through if he needed to but these people had become family to him and he knew that he didn’t want to have to do that if he could help it. Finding Ethan among the rubble was enough to take him back to the day they had found Elias in the burning remains of his apartment after the boy was shot although he quickly shook those thoughts from his mind. Right now this was Ethan before him and he knew that the same thing wasn’t going to happen to his husband, not if he had anything to say about it. Carrying Ethan out of the fire, Toni clasped Ethan’s hand firmly in both of his as Diego checked him over and he leaned forward to kiss Ethan’s head gently. “Come back to me, please,” he breathed. The moments that followed as he waited for Ethan to wake up were some of the longest of his life and he didn’t even realise that somewhere along the line he had held his breath until Ethan’s eyes opened and Toni felt his lungs burn as he finally released the breath he had been holding. Of course Ethan would start with a joke but thankfully Toni knew him fell enough to know that it was just that. “You’re such an idiot,” he said, rolling his eyes playfully now that Ethan was finally awake again. As Ethan tried to move only to end up groaning when he tried to lift his arm, Toni shook his head. “Don’t try to move, just take it easy,” he said, placing a gentle hand on his husband’s shoulder to stop him from trying to move again. “Apart from when I learned about the girls’ curse I don’t think I’ve ever felt that terrified. I can’t lose you,” he said gently. He had gone through that once already and he knew that he just couldn’t do it again. The kids couldn’t lose him either. “Don’t go to sleep, keep talking to me,” he said before leaning forward and pressing a light kiss to his husband’s lips. As Ethan said that he wasn’t leaving him again, Toni reached for Ethan and pulled him into his arms carefully so as not to hurt him. “You’d better not. If you ever try it I’ll find a way to drag you back myself,” he warned, knowing that there was no way his world or that of the kids could exist without Ethan in it again. ETHAN ALVAREZ

when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
You’re such an idiot, Don’t try to move, just take it easy,
Ethan chuckled at that, but it wasn't long before a cough interrupted his laugh. "M'sorry. You just looked so worried." Ethan said with a half-smile tugging on his lips as his eyes relaxed on his husband. When he tried to reach out to touch Toni, he came to the realization that he hadn't left the fire unscathed, but he expected nothing less. It was a miracle that he was alive, to begin with. But he was certainly grateful for it because he really would not have been able to go back if he were to erupt in flames in front of his whole team. It would instantly expose them to the existence of the supernatural. Just the thought of being the reason why they'd need to move out to a different town far away was enough to make him fight even harder to stay awake. At first, he was fighting for his family's sake, and now he was fighting for them and to keep them in town, too. "Okay, yeah—" Ethan winced briefly before he nodded his head. "That sounds like a wonderful idea." Ethan breathed out with a brief chuckle falling from his lips shortly after.
Apart from when I learned about the girls’ curse I don’t think I’ve ever felt that terrified. I can’t lose you, Don’t go to sleep, keep talking to me,
Ethan's eyes softened at Toni's words. He had to fight back the urge to reach out again to touch his husband. The urge to comfort him was strong and unshakable. "I'm so sorry, baby. I didn't think—" Yeah, Ethan, you didn't think. That's the issue. The voice in his head chastised him, and it made him press his lips into a thin line. "I just had to try and save the kid. I— I thought of Elias, I thought about what he'd gone through... I felt like I was going to fail that boy if I don't save him too." Ethan whispered, his eyes still on his husband, his lids getting a little heavier and the urge to let his eyes rest was strong, but he held back from giving in and stayed awake. "M'trying. I just feel so tired. But I'll keep talking 'til you're beggin' me to shut up." Ethan's lips spread into a lazy grin before he kissed Toni back, sighing softly into the kiss. "I think your lips just healed me." He said with a smile tugging on the corners of his lips.
You’d better not. If you ever try it I’ll find a way to drag you back myself,
"Oh, that's—" He trailed off for a moment, his expression shifting into an amused one. "S'kinda hot, actually." Ethan added a moment later. "I don't doubt that for a second, though." His eyes moving away to settle on Diego, giving him a small smile until his eyes relaxed on his captain, who looked far from impressed with him. "I'm not comin' back to work anytime soon, am I?" The question was to both Toni and Diego, his voice hushed. His captain was probably going to keep him in a hospital or at home to 'heal' from his wounds for weeks, if not months, without knowing that Ethan needed only a few minutes to heal and a bit longer than that if his injuries were severe enough.

“It’s alright, I’m used to that from you by now,” Toni teased, bringing his hand up and letting it rest against Ethan’s cheek gently. “It’s good to see you making jokes after what you’ve just been through.” He knew that it was Ethan’s way of trying to lighten the mood and Toni couldn’t blame him, he was often the more serious of the two and Ethan often tried to get him to lighten up a little. Toni knew that it was the way he had always been, when he and Ethan met Toni had already fought in one World War so he had known what to expect and he had known that he would do everything in his power to keep as many of his men safe. Losing Ethan had hit worse than anything he’d ever felt before and it had shaped the course of his life over the decades to come but he knew that it was one of those things. Lifetimes later he had become a single dad after Samara left the twins with him but now things had fallen into place and the kids were older so he knew that it was time he started to relax a little but right now he couldn’t, not while he needed to make sure that Ethan stayed awake and didn’t end up succumbing to his injuries. “We’ll get you home soon and get you settled, don’t worry,” Toni assured him, knowing that once he was there then he and Diego could make sure that he was really going to be alright without having to worry about keeping what Ethan was a secret from everyone they worked with. As Ethan apologised, Toni shook his head. “It’s okay, you’re the one who is important right now,” Toni said, knowing that they needed to focus on keeping him awake and giving his body time to heal rather than letting him give into the darkness. This time was different, he had known that Ethan would survive even if it meant that he had to die and be reborn in order to do so but he would be lying if he said that it hadn’t brought back memories of the time Ethan had died and he’d thought it was permanent and he didn’t even want to think about a world without Ethan in it again. “I get it, believe me. We can do things the others can’t and save people we wouldn’t be able to if we were human. I’ve done something similar more times than I care to admit.” It was easier to do when they were all in the midst of the fire and it was easy to lose track of what everyone was doing but Ethan had rushed in against orders and Toni knew that he probably wasn’t going to be let off easily for that. “You’d better,” he grinned as Ethan said that he would keep talking until he begged him to shut up. “In that case it’s lucky for you that there’ll be lots more kisses when we get home,” he chuckled, pressing one more kiss to his husband’s lips before pulling back. As Ethan said it was kinda hot when he promised to drag him back, Toni couldn’t help but laugh. “Trust you to think of it that way,” he teased. “I meant it when I said you’re stuck with me. It’s you and me always,” he said, knowing that there wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that. He had never been able to get over Ethan even before he’d realised that he was in love with him and now that he had accepted it he knew that he wasn’t going to go through the pain of losing him like that again. “You’ll be back before you know it. I’ll take some time off with you and we’ll get you back as soon as possible,” Toni assured him. Ethan had stayed with him during the time he’d had to take off after the cave collapsed so he knew that it was only fair that he did the same. Letting his forehead rest against Ethan’s for a moment, Toni turned and looked up at their captain. “I know you’ll need to debrief Cap but our shift is over, do you mind if I get him home?” he asked, not at all surprised when their captain protested and said that it would be a better idea to get Ethan to the hospital. “We’ve got a friend who is a doctor, I’ll give him a call and ask him to meet us there,” Toni assured him. Their captain seemed to consider it for a moment before nodding and telling them to get home safely. “Can you walk?” he asked, not sure just how bad his husband’s injuries were right now but he was ready to help him if he needed it anyway. when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
It’s alright, I’m used to that from you by now, It’s good to see you making jokes after what you’ve just been through. We’ll get you home soon and get you settled, don’t worry,
Ethan felt a smile tug on his lips already at Toni's comment before he attempted a single-shoulder shrug. "What can I say? Seeing you has healed me already." Ethan said with the same smile still locked on his lips. Truth be told, he only seemed to have energy to talk to Toni. He just wanted to talk to him, wanted to hear the sound of his voice, and wanted to be near him. Ethan's eyelids got heavy again, and he resisted the urge to shut them as he kept his eyes focused only on Toni, other sounds slowly coming in, too. "I can't wait." And that part was definitely the truth. He couldn't wait to head back home and see his daughters and his son. He had a feeling that seeing them would also heal him quickly. Not only that, but he loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family.
It’s okay, you’re the one who is important right now, I get it, believe me. We can do things the others can’t and save people we wouldn’t be able to if we were human. I’ve done something similar more times than I care to admit.
"S'not true. You're important too, baby." Ethan whispered, his eyes focused on none other than Toni. He nodded his head slowly, feeling more than grateful that Toni could understand him. He wasn't surprised by that in the slightest, Toni had always been able to understand him so well. "It would have sucked if I hadn't at least given it a try to save that kid." He could hear the sound of the boy's voice, but he couldn't see him without having to move and at the moment, his whole body still felt numb, so the extent of his own injuries remained a mystery to him. "Speaking of which... How's he doin'?" Ethan questioned, a hint of curiosity visible in the tone of his voice.
You’d better, In that case it’s lucky for you that there’ll be lots more kisses when we get home, Trust you to think of it that way, I meant it when I said you’re stuck with me. It’s you and me always, You’ll be back before you know it. I’ll take some time off with you and we’ll get you back as soon as possible,
Ethan grinned at that, his smile loop-sided. "In that case, I can't wait to get home." He returned the kiss, humming softly at the feeling of Toni's lips against his own. Ethan chuckled, but the laughter was interrupted with a cough. "Do you blame me?" He knew that Toni had meant it all too well when he told him that he was stuck with him. Ethan just can't imagine himself going anywhere without Toni. They had spent so much time together that he had forgotten what it feels like to be without him. Ethan nodded his head slowly, lips parting to let out a shaky exhalation. He loved his job, he wasn't sure what his life would be like without it, even if it was just a break until he gets better. "Thank you, baby." Having Toni would definitely make the whole situation a lot more bearable. "I appreciate you stayin' with me."
I know you’ll need to debrief Cap but our shift is over, do you mind if I get him home? We’ve got a friend who is a doctor, I’ll give him a call and ask him to meet us there, Can you walk?
Ethan's eyes guiltily met the eyes of his captain, and he wasn't surprised at all when he protested about Ethan going home and not to a hospital. "C'mon, Cap, I got Toni with me, I'm going to be more than 'kay." Ethan was pinned with an unimpressed look from his Captain, and he seemed to really consider it for a moment before he eventually relented. "Yeah, it should be easy." Ethan planted his palm on the ground, using his good hand to support his weight as himself to a sitting position with a groan falling from his lips. Ethan had a few minor burns, a broken arm which had taken the brunt of the fall along with his leg, both of which in a bad state, but they'd heal. They just need time. Ethan was pretty sure there were also hints of a minor concussion, but it was the least of his worries. He was pretty sure that the adrenaline was starting to fade as he felt the pain slowly settle in, but he didn't voice it out loud and slowly started pushing himself up, but the attempt was unsuccessful as he groaned in pain. He tried again, but the attempt ended in a fail, too. "Okay, maybe it's not as easy as I thought." Ethan breathed out with a pained chuckle falling from his lips.

“You can be such a smooth talker when you want to be,” Toni said, bringing his hand up and letting it rest against Ethan’s cheek as their eyes met. He knew that Ethan was just saying that but the fact that he was even able to make jokes right now was enough to reassure Toni that he was going to be just fine. He knew that it was crazy to have been feeling as scared as he had been, Ethan was a phoenix so coming back to life when he died was literally in the job description but seeing him disappear when the floor collapsed had taken Toni back to the day that Ethan had died during the war. To this day the memory of that day still stayed with him, he knew that things had worked out the way they were supposed to in the end but he had spent so much time trying to live his life for both of them and he had found himself thinking of Ethan a lot. Not a day had gone by when he hadn’t missed him and Toni knew that he never wanted to go through that again. Even the idea of Ethan dying and coming back didn’t sit well with him, he didn’t want anything bad to happen to his husband and he knew that he would do anything to stop that from happening even if it meant rushing into a burning building after the order had been given to evacuate. “I know the kids will be happy to see you in one piece too,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Ethan. They didn’t just have each other to think about, they had three kids and to an extent they had Diego too so they both had plenty worth fighting for now. “I’ll be fine, you’re the one I’m worried about,” Toni assured him. He knew that it might end up being a different story later when what had happened really began to sink in but right now he was determined to be strong for Ethan the way that Ethan had been strong for him the day he had made it back home. “I know it would have,” he nodded as Ethan spoke again. “What you did was so brave and don’t worry about Cap, he’ll calm down,” he said, making sure to keep his voice low enough so that only Ethan would be able to hear him. “I’m so proud of you,” he added, his smile returning as his eyes met his husband’s once more. “I heard them say something about a little smoke inhalation and some minor burns but that’s to be expected. He’ll be fine thanks to you.”Toni’s smile widened as Ethan said that he couldn’t wait to get home and he felt himself begin to relax a little at the feeling of Ethan’s lips against his own. “No but don’t go getting any ideas. You need to rest and heal,” he chuckled, determined to make sure that Ethan ended up taking it easy until he was feeling better. There was a time when Ethan had done the same for him and now Toni knew that it was his turn to return the favour. As Ethan thanked him, Toni shook his head. “You don’t need to thank me. For better or worse, in sickness and in health, right?” he asked, reciting the vows that they had made on their wedding day. They didn’t apply to the two of them so much in that they couldn’t get sick but the sentiment was still the same. “Besides, I’d rather you didn’t end up dying from boredom from being stuck at home on your own,” he added with a grin. “I’ll be there too, I’ll make sure he’s alright,” Diego chimed in which was enough to have Toni sending a grateful smile in his brother’s direction. Going to a hospital was risky for anyone supernatural and even though they’d had to take Elias there after his apartment was set on fire at that point they hadn’t had any choice since social services had needed to get involved. Now they did and he was relieved when their captain relented and agreed that he could take Ethan home. Giving Ethan the chance to get to his feet on his own, Toni’s expression softened as Ethan said it wasn’t as easy as he’d thought. “Don’t worry, I’ve got you,” Toni assured him, helping Ethan to his feet and moving Ethan’s arm so it was around his shoulders so he could support him better. A spare ambulance had showed up and they were able to give the two of them a ride home and as they pulled up at the side of the kerb, Toni helped Ethan out. “Almost there, how are you feeling?” he asked as he helped Ethan up the path and into the house. when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
You can be such a smooth talker when you want to be, I know the kids will be happy to see you in one piece too,
Ethan's grin soon became visible on his lips at Toni's words when he told him that he can be a smooth talker when he wants to be. "That's something I discovered not long after we got together." He admitted, having gained the ability to charm Toni whenever he wanted to. It was definitely a nice thing because he always did it to make sure Toni knew just how much he loved him. Ethan nodded his head slowly at Toni's words, his lips stretching to form a small smile as he imagined himself going home to see the kids. "I miss them already." Ethan's voice was soft as he spoke, his eyes relaxing on his husband, keeping his half-lidded eyes on the man. Looking at him always managed to soothe him and right now, he was pretty sure that the only reason he wasn't completely focused on his pain was because of Toni, as the man managed to effortlessly comfort and distract him.
I’ll be fine, you’re the one I’m worried about, I know it would have, What you did was so brave and don’t worry about Cap, he’ll calm down, I’m so proud of you, I heard them say something about a little smoke inhalation and some minor burns but that’s to be expected. He’ll be fine thanks to you.
Ethan's eyes softened as Toni told him that he will be fine. "For now." Ethan mumbled, his eyes still on his husband. "I'm okay, Toni. I'm okay. I'm right here." He assured him in a soft voice, knowing that later on, all of this was going to hit Toni pretty hard, and his heart ached for the man. That was the reason he was so torn between going in there or remaining where he was. All because of Toni because he knew if he had managed to get himself hurt or worse, Toni will be the one to suffer more than him.
"He's going to lecture me into next year, I can pretty much sense it from here." Ethan said with a brief chuckle falling from his lips because apparently Ethan still hasn't learned from his mistake as he winced at the pain that shot through him. Noted, body. Noted. Ethan's eyes softened when Toni told him that he was proud of him. "Thank you, baby." The young firefighter soon said with a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips. Ethan exhaled a sigh of relief when he heard that the kid, over all, was going to be fine. "That's such a big relief." Ethan breathed out, his voice soft as the tension in his shoulders slowly seemed to ease away.
No but don’t go getting any ideas. You need to rest and heal, You don’t need to thank me. For better or worse, in sickness and in health, right? Besides, I’d rather you didn’t end up dying from boredom from being stuck at home on your own,
"Me? Getting ideas? I'd never." Ethan feigned innocence with a grin already spreading his lips. "I can rest and heal while giving you all of my love and attention. I'm very good at multitasking." When Toni recited the vows they had shared on their wedding day, he felt his heart skip a beat as his love for Toni soon became clear on his expression all over again. "Yeah, baby. You're right." Ethan said in a soft voice, his eyes still focused on his husband before his lips spread into a grin at Toni's joke. "My true savior," Ethan said with the same teasing grin on his lips. "I look forward to you playin' my little nurse. I'll try not to get used to it, though."
I’ll be there too, I’ll make sure he’s alright, Don’t worry, I’ve got you, Almost there, how are you feeling?
Ethan looked over at Diego, sending him a grateful smile, murmuring a soft 'thank you' before his attention turned to his captain. "See, Cap? I got two very capable people lookin' after me." Ethan said with a grin tugging on his lips already. Ethan then began making an attempt to get up from the ground but it wasn't as easy as he'd first thought. He was grateful that Toni was there to lend him a helping hand as he slowly got up with Toni's help. On his way to the ambulance, he looked at the other ambulance, where he noticed the woman sitting inside it. It drove off before he could lay his eyes on the kid, but he knew that he was in safe hands now. "Thank you." Ethan said in a soft voice as Toni helped him inside and soon enough, the driver was taking them home and when the ambulance stopped, he knew they were home already.
Ethan winced in pain as he got up again with Toni's help as the man began guiding him toward the door. "Like I can't wait to lay on our bed." Ethan admitted with a brief chuckle falling from his lips as he limped his way home with Toni's help. Ethan took in a deep breath when they finally entered the house, looking beyond happy to finally be home after everything that has happened. "Home, sweet home." Ethan said with a small smile tugging on his lips not long after, still keeping his weight off his injured foot, his hand on Toni for support. "Bed?"

"I remember. You've had me wrapped around your little finger ever since then," Toni grinned, knowing that it was completely true. It had never been like this for him with anyone else, he had always done his best to make each relationship he had ended up in work but he knew now that it was because none of them were right for him. Ethan had had his heart ever since they fought in the war together and it felt good to be able to admit that now. "I'm sure they miss you too, I bet they can't wait to see you." They didn't know what had happened to Ethan yet but it would all become clear when they got home and then he knew it would be a completely different matter just like it had been when he had returned home that day. It was easy to take someone for granted when you saw them every day but seeing someone he loved get hurt always brought it home for Toni just how much they meant to him. "You're always the one I'm worried about out of the two of us," Toni admitted. It was the same with everyone he loved, he always worried about them rather than himself and he knew that he always would. Toni had been on his own for such a long time after he lost Ethan and now that he had people in his life that he loved he knew that he wanted to make the most of it. As Ethan said he was right there, Toni's expression nodded. "I know you are. I'm so glad you're going to be okay," he said gently as his eyes met his husband's. It was the truth, he knew that it was illogical to worry about someone dying who would be sure to resurrect but he just couldn't help it and it wasn't just Ethan, he felt the same way about Elias. He knew what it was, he didn't want anyone he loved to get hurt and he was glad that Ethan would heal. As Ethan said their captain was going to lecture him, Toni couldn't help but laugh. "Probably but he'll get over it. No one can stay mad at you for long," Toni assured him. That was something that he had learned pretty quickly during one of the worst times of their lives and if he could learn it back then he was certain that their captain could learn it now if he hadn't done already. Seeing Ethan wince, Toni's expression softened. "Take it easy, don't move to much," he said, giving Ethan's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "I'm sure deep down he's just glad you're alright," he added, able to remember how it felt to have the lives of so many soldiers who were serving under him all too well. "It's true, you're incredible," Toni assured him. There weren't many people who would have risked their lives like that and now that his fear was starting to subside he really did feel proud of Ethan. "He's lucky you got to him when you did, it could have been much worse. He's with his mom now. You did good baby," Toni assured him as he kissed Ethan's forehead gently. "Yes you would, it's exactly the kind of thing you would do," he chuckled, knowing that there wasn't a doubt in his mind about that. As Ethan spoke again, Toni felt a smile form on his face. "I can't deny I like the sound of that," he admitted. Ethan had taken the time off work to look after him before so now Toni knew that it was his turn to do the same thing for his husband. The vows they had exchanged slipped from his lips so easily even though they didn't all technically apply and from the look Ethan was giving him it looked like they'd had the desired effect. "You can get used to it as much as you like, I'm always going to look out for you," he grinned. Ethan wasn't just his husband, he was his best friend and his partner and they had always looked out for each other so he knew that wasn't going to change now. Toni sent a grateful smile in his brother's direction as Diego said he would be there too. He knew that he wasn't going to hold Diego to it, after all he knew that Diego and Tommy were meant to be seeing each other that night which tended to result in them staying at Tommy's place but it seemed to help reassure their captain a little more so Toni really was glad about that. Helping Ethan to his feet, Toni led them in the direction of the free ambulance and helped Ethan inside. As Ethan thanked him, Toni shook his head. "You have nothing to thank me for," Toni promised as he joined Ethan inside the back of the ambulance and sat down. Soon enough they were home but seeing the way Ethan winced as he moved was enough to make Toni's heart ache. "Not far now," he said, hoping to encourage Ethan as they made their way up to the front of the house. "I can't blame you, you've definitely earned it after today," he admitted. Opening the door, Toni felt a smile form on his face at Ethan's words. "I bet it feels good to be home, huh?" he asked before nodding as Ethan said he word bed. "Yep, let's get you changed and settled so you can rest up. You can even pick what we have for dinner tonight," he said, knowing that whether Ethan wanted something home cooked or take out it didn't matter, he would make it happen. "You are doing okay, aren't you?" he asked as he helped Ethan up the stairs, knowing that they could talk freely now that they didn't have to worry about being overheard by anyone who didn't know that Ethan wasn't human. when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
I remember. You've had me wrapped around your little finger ever since then, I'm sure they miss you too, I bet they can't wait to see you.
Ethan's lips stretched into a grin at that. "You're really buttering me up with your words." Ethan was definitely looking forward to going home and seeing the kids. Today had really taken a turn, and he was really relieved to know that he was alive and could go home soon to see the kids. He was okay. Ethan didn't want to think about it all that much because the mere thought honestly scared him, but he'd come so close to dying today and that really would've sucked. He was aware that it wouldn't be a permanent death, but it would still scare the living hell out of him anyway. "I can't wait to see them, too." Ethan said with the same grin still locked on his lips.
You're always the one I'm worried about out of the two of us, I know you are. I'm so glad you're going to be okay,
Ethan's eyes softened at Toni's words before he nodded his head a few times in an understanding manner. "I've pretty much done nothing to make you not worry about me, have I?" Ethan gestured to his current predicament to prove a point. "Me too, baby. Me too." He really didn't want to cause Toni any more pain. He didn't want him to go through the same experience of seeing him die again. He had done it once, and he'd made a promise to never do that to his husband again.
Probably but he'll get over it. No one can stay mad at you for long, Take it easy, don't move to much, I'm sure deep down he's just glad you're alright, It's true, you're incredible, He's lucky you got to him when you did, it could have been much worse. He's with his mom now. You did good baby,
Ethan chuckled at Toni's words before he nodded his head once. "Mhm. I'm too cute for my own good. One look at my face, and he'll forgive me already." He said with mock confidence, a smile tugging on his lips already. "Yeah, um, that's probably a good idea..." Ethan groaned lightly as he remained where he was, trying not to move too much. "It's the least I could do. She'd lost enough tonight." Ethan's lips stretched into a small, sad smile, remembering just how she'd broken down into sobs at the sight of her deceased husband. He didn't want her to lose her son, too. "I'm really glad."
Yes you would, it's exactly the kind of thing you would do. I can't deny I like the sound of that, You can get used to it as much as you like, I'm always going to look out for you,
Ethan didn't even try to mask the grin that stretched on his lips. "You know me all too well, baby." He didn't even try to deny it. "I'm really one of the luckiest people alive, aren't I?" Ethan was incredibly lucky to have met Toni and to have fallen so deeply in love with him that he could barely breathe. "I'm always going to look out for you, too." Ethan said with a half-smile tugging on his lips. "Always."
You have nothing to thank me for, Not far now, I can't blame you, you've definitely earned it after today, I bet it feels good to be home, huh? Yep, let's get you changed and settled, so you can rest up. You can even pick what we have for dinner tonight, You are doing okay, aren't you?
Ethan shook his head gently. "I've got plenty to thank you for, baby." He said in a soft voice. He was more than relieved when they had finally entered their home. "Mmm, yeah. S'been a day for sure." Ethan breathed out with a chuckle following. His brows quirked up when Toni told him that he can even pick what they have for dinner tonight. "Oh. I'm pretty sure I'm being spoiled right now." Ethan said with a chuckle falling from his lips. "Maybe we can have pizza today." Ethan suggested with a half-smile forming on his lips. "Yeah, baby. I'm doing okay. I'm starting to heal already. My leg might take some time to heal fully, but it'll definitely be quicker than average. I just need to give it some time." Ethan's minor wounds were already starting to close up quickly, which was a huge relief, it eased the amount of pain that he was experiencing. Ethan sat down on the bed with a relieved sigh falling from his lips already. Ethan laid down almost immediately, almost grumbling at the thought of having to do anything to get his clothes off. He wanted to lay right there. "Come lay down with me. We can worry about changing out of our clothes later."

“It’s only fair since you’ve been doing the same with me,” Toni laughed, not even caring if they sounded really cheesy right now. He had always known that their jobs were risky and it had really hit home after he’d ended up stuck and bleeding in the cave after it collapsed but he had known deep down that he would still find a way to make it back to his family. When it came to Ethan he didn’t doubt that the guy would do everything in his power to make sure that he did the same and Toni knew that if he did die then it wouldn’t be permanent anyway but the truth was that he had already seen Ethan die once so he knew that he didn’t want to have to sit back and watch that happen again. It was more than that, though, he’d had to learn how to live without Ethan but after he came back Ethan had had to come to terms with the fact that not only was he supernatural but that he had also died. Toni knew that dying had taken its toll on Elias even though he had come back and he knew that he didn’t want his husband or his son to go through that again if they could help it. “It won’t be long now,” Toni assured Ethan, taking his husband’s hand in his and giving it a gentle squeeze. Ethan’s next words were enough to have Toni feeling a little guilty and he lifted Ethan’s hand to his lips and pressed a light kiss against his knuckles. “None of it has been your fault, you didn’t know any of this was going to happen,” Toni assured him, not wanting Ethan to feel bad about any of it. “It wouldn’t matter anyway, I love you so of course I’m going to worry about you. It’s the same with the kids and the same with Diego too,” he added. He had lost so many people during the war that it had taught him to keep the people that he loved close to him for as long as he could and he was pretty sure that he was never going to stop worrying about them. He wasn’t really worried about what happened to him as long as the people he loved were safe. “You mean the world to me.” His world had literally stopped the day Ethan had died, Toni hadn’t known how he had felt about the guy back then but he had known that nothing was the same after that and he had spent years trying to find a way to replace what he had lost but he had only ended up failing miserably. As Ethan spoke again, Toni felt a smile form on his face. “I think everyone out here is glad too, Cap gave me the go ahead to go in after you so I think that’s a pretty good sign that he cares.” Even if the guy hadn’t given his blessing then Toni knew that he would have gone in after Ethan anyway, there was no way that he would have left his husband in there to die. “I think that only works on me,” Toni laughed as Ethan said it would only take one look at him for their captain to forgive him. “It really was brave. The moment I heard your voice over the radio I knew why you were doing it,” Toni assured him. There had never been a doubt in his mind that Ethan had gone in there for the right reasons, he always did. He had always been the kind of person who would put himself in danger in order to save the lives of others and Toni knew that that was exactly the man he had fallen in love with so he wouldn’t have it any other way. “Thanks to you she still has her son, they can help each other through this.” That was something to be glad about at least. “You got that right,” Toni chuckled as Ethan said that he knew him too well. “And you know me well enough to know I’ll probably give in to whatever you want like I usually do,” he added with a smile. He had never felt this way about anyone else so he often struggled to say no to Ethan and actually stick to his guns. They had spent so much time apart after the war but now it felt like none of that had even happened and Toni knew that he just wanted to do everything he could in order to make Ethan happen. “That makes two of us because I’m lucky to have you too,” he said, his smile widening as his eyes met his husband’s. It felt strange now to think that there was a time when he had been scared of what being with Ethan would be like and what it would mean and not a day went by now when he wasn’t glad that he had listened to their daughter and that he had listened to his heart. “I know you will. You’ve got my back and I’ve got yours.” That was the way it had always been for the two of them and he didn’t doubt that it would continue to always be that way. “No you don’t, I’m just glad I could be here for you,” Toni admitted gently as he helped Ethan into the house. He meant it when he said that Ethan had nothing to thank him for, he had known what he was letting himself in for when they got married and Ethan had always been there for him so it was simply time for him to return the favour. “Definitely. I don’t care if it’s boring, I still hope we have a few quiet days coming up,” he grinned. With any luck it would work out that way, Ethan needed to heal and Toni knew that he wasn’t going to make Ethan have to stay at home on his own. When it was Toni’s turn to recover Ethan hadn’t left his side and Toni knew that now it was his turn to be there for Ethan. “I think it’s safe to say you’ve earned it, don’t you?” he chuckled. “Sure, pizza it is,” he nodded, remembering the day Ethan had ordered pizza while Toni was recovering and the conversation that had followed while they had been eating together in his room which had resulted in them finally getting together. “We can even order delivery so I can stay with you,” he offered, not wanting to make Ethan spend too much time on his own and relive what had happened yet if he wasn’t ready. “I’m so glad to hear that,” he said sincerely as Ethan said that he was already starting to heal. Toni knew that it was true, he had seen the way some of the wounds had started to heal already but there were others that would take time and the psychological scars were a different matter entirely. Helping Ethan down onto the bed, Toni watched his husband for a moment before pulling off his boots and letting his turnout jacket fall to the floor. Climbing onto his side of the bed, he moved so that he could wrap his arms around Ethan and he held his husband to him, undeniably glad to be home. ETHAN ALVAREZ

when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
It’s only fair since you’ve been doing the same with me. It won’t be long now, None of it has been your fault, you didn’t know any of this was going to happen, It wouldn’t matter anyway, I love you so of course I’m going to worry about you. It’s the same with the kids and the same with Diego too,
Ethan felt a small smile tug on his lips at Toni's words when he told him that he'd been doing the same thing with him. His expression definitely turned into a pleased one. Ethan was undoubtedly excited to head on home with Toni, so he could see their kids again. He was looking forward to it. "I know, I could have been a little more careful, though." His first death had been a sudden one, he didn't see it coming, but back then he knew that his days were limited. He would be an optimistic idiot to think that he'd be able to head home after the war's done. He knew that there was a very high possibility he'd never be able to head back home, but still... He should have been a little more careful, just like how he should have been a lot more careful today. He had been reckless, and it nearly cost him his life, even though it would be a momentary death, like the previous one. "I love you too, baby." Ethan understood what Toni meant because he worried about him, too. He worried about their kids, too. They meant the whole world to him, so of course he worried about them. He didn't want to lose them. Ever.
You mean the world to me. I think everyone out here is glad too, Cap gave me the go ahead to go in after you so I think that’s a pretty good sign that he cares. I think that only works on me, It really was brave. The moment I heard your voice over the radio I knew why you were doing it, Thanks to you she still has her son, they can help each other through this.
Ethan's eyes softened at Toni's words. "You mean the world to me too, Toni." Ethan gave Toni's hand a gentle squeeze as he said that, meaning every word. "I'm sorry for making you risk your life like that, baby. Thank you for comin' for me." Ethan was really grateful that Toni had risked his life for his sake. They were both immortal beings, and it was difficult to kill them, but they still shouldn't risk it. A chuckle left Ethan's lips when Toni told him that his cuteness only works on him, and it really wouldn't work on the captain. "Yup. You are definitely right about that." Ethan was pretty sure that the man would be immune to it. It only ever seemed to work on Toni which made him chuckle again, this time the sound was thankfully not followed up with a groan of pain. "Thank you, baby." It was the least he could do after the night that the woman has had. "I knew you'd understand why I did it more than anyone else." Ethan gave Toni's hand a gentle squeeze, feeling really relieved to hear that the woman still had her kid with her. It would have been such a terrible loss if the woman had come out of the fire as the sole survivor.
You got that right, And you know me well enough to know I’ll probably give in to whatever you want like I usually do, That makes two of us because I’m lucky to have you too, I know you will. You’ve got my back and I’ve got yours.
Ethan's lips spread into a grin at that before he nodded his head a few times. "Yup. I know that, too." Ethan added a moment later with a laugh falling from his lips. "But don't worry, I won't go too crazy." He promised with a half-smile forming on his lips soon after his laughter had died down. "It's pretty cute, though. I gotta admit." Just the way his husband would do whatever he wanted. It was so overwhelmingly cute. "Always." Ethan said with a soft smile tugging on his lips. They'll always have each other's backs. No matter what.
No you don’t, I’m just glad I could be here for you, Definitely. I don’t care if it’s boring, I still hope we have a few quiet days coming up, I think it’s safe to say you’ve earned it, don’t you? Sure, pizza it is, We can even order delivery so I can stay with you, I’m so glad to hear that,
"God, you are so romantic. My heart is literally about to burst right now." Ethan breathed out, sounding completely in love with his husband, and that's definitely because he was, indeed, in love with him. "Mmm, it's gonna be weird, sleeping past my alarm, I mean. But I'm definitely looking forward to it." Ethan said with a quick nod of his head following. He was undoubtedly looking forward to having a few days / weeks off with Toni. "A bit, yeah." He pinched a small space between his index and thumb when Toni said that it's safe to say that he'd earned all the spoiling. "Brings back memories, doesn't it? The whole pizza bit. Didn't we have that after your accident?" Ethan reminisced with a soft chuckle falling from his lips. "Oh, yes. Please." Ethan immediately answered to the suggestion of ordering delivery.
"Me too, baby. I couldn't feel anything for a while because of the adrenaline, but it definitely hurts like hell." Ethan admitted with a small wince following. Ethan breathed a soft sigh of relief once he was finally able to lay down on their bed with Toni's help. He looked at his husband for a bit before a smile formed on his lips in an instant when Toni laid down next to him. Ethan closed his eyes, lips parting to let out a content sigh as he allowed himself to sink into his husband's embrace.
Ethan was quiet for a while as he just allowed himself to enjoy being in Toni's arms after such a stressful night. "Do you think we would have had to move out if I had actually died in there? I would've come back, but..." Ethan trailed off with a soft sigh falling from his lips. "Do you think we would've had to leave town because of this?"

“That doesn’t matter now. You’re safe now, that’s what counts,” Toni assured him. Seeing Ethan disappear from the window was one of the scariest things he’d seen for a long time and he knew that it would be a while before the image stopped being at the forefront of his mind but this time really was different. Before when Ethan had died Toni hadn’t had any idea that the guy would be resurrected but now things were different. They knew what each other was now and he knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. The thought of Ethan dying still scared him but now it was because he never wanted Ethan to go through that pain again. He knew that it had to have been traumatic for him and Toni knew that he wanted to save his husband from that if he could. He knew that Ethan was capable of looking out for himself but he didn’t have to do that on his own now, neither of them did. As Ethan said he loved him too, Toni felt a smile touch his lips. “I know you do,” Toni promised. There had never been a doubt in his mind about that, not since they’d first said those words to each other, and no matter how much time passed he knew that it was never going to change for either of them. He’d found his forever with Ethan and Toni knew that he would stand by him no matter what happened. Hearing Ethan say he meant the world to him as well was enough to make Toni’s heart skip a beat and he kissed Ethan’s forehead gently as his husband squeezed his hand. Toni knew that he was lucky to have found Ethan again and he was looking forward to the long life they were going to have together. “I’d do the same thing every time. You know I’d do anything for you,” Toni assured him. He hadn’t even had to think twice about heading into the fire after Ethan, he had known that it wouldn’t be enough to kill him and he had also known that there was absolutely no way that he was going to let his husband die in there. Ethan had already given his life to save others once and Toni had known that, just like last time, if it was going to happen then he wasn’t going to let Ethan go through it on his own. “I guess you’ll have to make do with me instead,” he teased. He never had been able to stay mad at Ethan even in the beginning when the two of them hadn’t been seeing eye to eye. Now things were different and the truth was that he didn’t even mind that Ethan had him wrapped around his little finger. “Of course I understand. To tell you the truth I thought about doing the same thing,” he admitted. Had he not been trying to help the woman he’d pulled out of the fire while Diego checked her over then Toni knew that he would have gone inside to get her son just like he and Ethan had gone in to get Elias. “You’d better not,” Toni chuckled as Ethan said that he wouldn’t go too crazy. He knew that he would end up giving Ethan whatever he wanted anyway but he trusted his husband not to take advantage of it. “You should be used to it by now,” Toni grinned, knowing that it had been that way ever since they first got together. He loved Ethan, it might have taken him a while to accept that but the night he hadn’t made it home had made him realise just how much the guy meant to him and he wasn’t afraid to show that any longer. He wasn’t like that with anyone else, it was only his family who got to see that side of him and he knew that that was just as it should be. “What can I say, you bring it out in me,” he chuckled. He had never really seen himself as much of a romantic, not before Ethan, but he knew now that it was because he hadn’t been with the right person until now. “You’re the only one who ever could.” He had always longed to find someone he would want to go the extra mile for and he had found that person in Ethan. He knew that Ethan had never been made to feel special by his parents and Toni was determined to make up for it now that he had the chance. He never wanted Ethan to doubt how much he meant to him and he did his best to show him that every day. “I know what you mean but it will be worth it to make sure you have the time to heal,” Toni nodded. He knew that Ethan would be fine but he would still need time and given that their captain and everyone else had seen the shape he was in right now Toni knew that it might mean that Ethan would have to stay home longer than he normally would to make sure that he didn’t end up drawing attention to the fact that he healed quickly. Toni would stay with him anyway and he hoped it would make things easier for Ethan. “I’d say a lot,” he grinned before nodding as Ethan asked if the whole pizza thing brought back memories. “It sure does. It was over pizza and a beer that you first told me you loved me.” That was a day that he was certain he would never forget. Before then he hadn’t known how Ethan had really felt about him but he had learned the truth that day and it had shaped their lives together ever since. “Hopefully that will pass soon and you’ll start to heal,” Toni said gently, hating knowing that Ethan was in pain. He knew that it couldn’t be avoided but his heart really did go out to Ethan and Toni hoped that he would start feeling better soon. Lying down next to Ethan, Toni was careful as he wrapped his arms around his husband as the last thing he wanted was to end up hurting him even more than he already was. As Ethan asked if they would have had to move if he had died in the fire, Toni considered his words carefully. “I think it depends on whether we could have disguised it like we did with Elias when he died,” he said gently. “We could have asked Evangeline to compel everyone to forget you’d died but if that didn’t work then I think we would have to move. You wouldn’t have been able to stay here with the people we work with thinking you were dead and there’s no way the kids and I would have let you go on your own.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

when you're born in a burning house, you think the whole world is on fire
Ethan nodded his head at that, his lips stretching to form a small smile. He was definitely grateful that he was alive. His eyes shifted back to the house, noticing just how it had caved in. There was a whole wreck in there, and there were still firefighters trying to put the fire out as it raged on. His attention drifted back to Toni, and he was just happy to be out of that house, he was happy that he wasn't too late and had actually managed to save that kid. "I know." Ethan said in a soft voice when Toni said he'd do anything for him. Truth was, he would do anything for Toni, too. "You did?" Ethan asked, his brows quirking up in surprise when Toni told him he had thought about doing the same thing. "Actually, I don't know why I'm surprised. Of course, you'd think about doing the same thing." Toni was a father, so of course he would think about saving that kid because he knew how painful it would be to lose your kid, to not feel like you have done everything you possibly could to save them.
Ethan grinned at Toni's words as he shrugged his shoulders before he let out a sound of pain at the move that seemed to jostle his badly hurt shoulder. "I should really stop doing that." Ethan grumbled in pain before he finally seemed to ease down again as the pain slowly lessened. "Guilty as charged, your honor." That was his response when Toni told him that he brings that out in him. He'd always loved it whenever Toni wooed him with those incredibly romantic words. They really made him swoon even harder for his husband. You'd think they'd be out of their honeymoon phase by now, but nope. Still thriving in that phase, and he doubted they'll ever actually step out of it. "Yeah, I... I guess so." It will probably wind up driving him up the wall at some point because he knew himself, he knew how much he loved his job. Being a firefighter made him feel like he was making a difference in the world, it made him feel like he was capable of saving people. Being in his firefighter uniform made him feel ... invincible.
Ethan released a soft sigh, knowing that he'd really have that stretch his days off from work to make it believable to his captain, who was a human as far as Ethan was concerned, that he had healed normally.
"You and I, we aren't done. But for now, let's get you in that ambulance, so you can head on home and rest." His captain sounded upset, but he also sounded concerned. "Wanna get rid of me already, Cap? C'mon, you don't gotta look so concerned, I'm okay. I'll even race you to the ambulance to prove a point." Ethan spoke so confidently for someone with broken limbs and burn wounds. His captain raised an eyebrow in a manner that screamed 'go ahead and show me, then' as he looked down at Ethan's injured leg before he shook his head and walked away to handle the scene for now. "Too early for a running joke, I take it?" Ethan asked when a moment or two of silence stretched on for a while. His teammates shook their heads too, with one of them even chuckling to herself. Well, at least it made one of them laugh.
"Yeah! I remember it like it happened yesterday." Ethan said with a soft chuckle falling from his lips. "Good times." Ethan paused when he processed his sentence. "Wait, no, no. That sounds wrong. It was a bad time, but we made a good memory out of it, right?" Ethan looked down at his arms, noticing the small scratches as well as other minor burns slowly began to erase themselves. "Me too." Ethan whispered in a soft voice, aching to just heal already, so he wouldn't have to experience that unpleasant pain for long.
Ethan was quiet for a while, his frown digging deeper into his features. "Shit..." He breathed out. He really didn't think it would wind up being that bad, but now there was a bitter taste lingering on his tongue. "That would have been a disaster." Ethan said a moment later, pointing out the obvious. "The kids, they... they built something here, so did we. I... I'm really glad that I didn't die in there." Ethan whispered, his frown still digging deeper into his features.
Ethan shook his head to toss those thoughts away because, thankfully, it wasn't going to become their reality. It was just the worst case scenario, that's it. Ethan sighed softly and just leaned down to press a gentle kiss against Toni's arm before he laid his head back on the pillow, allowing himself a moment where he just closed his eyes and sunk back into Toni's comforting embrace.
