Antonio had wanted Ethan’s reunion with his parents to go well more than anything but deep down he had known that chances were it wasn’t going to. Ethan hadn’t told him much about what his parents were like but he’d told him enough and Antonio had known that it would be a mistake to let Ethan go through this alone. Even now he could tell that Ethan was trying to put on a brave face but he could see that underneath it all he was hurt and Antonio wanted nothing more than to make things better for him. His words had been teasing but they were enough to draw a smile to Ethan’s lips and that was all he’d wanted. “Now that you mention it I do look pretty good in an apron,” Antonio said, no seriousness at all to his voice as he spoke. He knew that he would never forget what a shock it had been to his own parents when he’d told them that he and Ethan were together or later that they were getting married. They were traditional and during the time they were born into then it wouldn’t have been possible for him and Ethan to be together. Hell, in the time that the two of them were born into a century ago they wouldn’t have been able to be together like this and he knew that he had to keep that in mind. He couldn’t blame Ethan’s parents for being surprised but he had known that there was no way that he was going to let them make Ethan feel worthless the way they had done so many times before. “I hope so too,” he said sincerely as Ethan said he hoped his parents finally learned how to be parents. It wasn’t just the two of them that Ethan was missing out on spending time with, it was his brother and sister as well and Antonio knew that his husband deserved so much better than that. “I think they probably would,” Antonio agreed as Ethan said that their parents might even get along. “No matter what happens with them you’re never alone. You’ve got all of us now.” Ethan was a part of his family and he always would be now so Antonio knew that he didn’t want him to feel alone for a moment longer. “You never deserved that,” Antonio admitted. Ethan’s parents should have treated him so much better but during the short time he had spent with them it had been clear to Antonio that they weren’t interested in actually being there for their son. They had been so quick to judge him without even giving him the chance to explain and seeing the way that Ethan had felt like he’d had to take that kind of treatment from them had made Antonio’s heart ache. He had been trying to help Ethan feel more confident in himself and in such a short space of time Ethan’s parents had undermined all that hard work their son had put in. Antonio knew that he wasn’t going to let Ethan slip back into old habits of thinking that he was worthless though and he honestly hoped that Ethan wasn’t going to let his parents win. The smile that formed on Ethan’s face when Antonio called him his Ethan was enough to bring a smile to Antonio’s face in return. He had tried to deny the way he felt for such a long time after Ethan came back into his life but he knew now that the two of them truly were made for each other. It had taken them a long time to come to terms with that but Antonio almost dying had given them the push that they’d needed. Antonio knew that he was always going to feel bad about the way the meeting with Ethan’s parents had gone but they were each other’s family and he knew that he was going to make sure that Ethan never felt alone again. “Can’t have them stop you going for the record,” he teased, his tone making it clear that he was only messing around. Ethan’s hand was still holding his as they made their way to the car and Antonio gave his husband’s hand a gentle squeeze before finally letting go so they could climb into the car. As Ethan asked if he was planning to spoil him, Antonio couldn’t help but laugh. “I always do,” he chuckled. It was Ethan who had said they might as well make the most of it and that was exactly what Antonio planned on doing. The hotel wasn’t too far away so it didn’t take them long to reach it and his expression turned thoughtful for a moment as Ethan asked whether they should order room service or go to a bar. “Why don’t we stay here and order room service?” he suggested as he closed the door behind them. “I like the idea of having you all to myself for a while.” It would also mean that Ethan wouldn’t have to worry about putting on an act for those around him but Antonio knew better than to say those words out loud just yet. “What are you in the mood for?” he asked as he grabbed the menu and held it out to Ethan. Now that you mention it I do look pretty good in an apron, I hope so too, I think they probably would, No matter what happens with them you’re never alone. You’ve got all of us now. You never deserved that,
Ethan grinned at Antonio's words before he nodded his head in agreement. "Glad we could both agree on something." He teased, his voice remaining light-hearted. But all joking aside, he really hoped that his parents will come around and actually support him for once. It would certainly surprise him quite a lot. "It would certainly be a wonderful surprise." He would certainly not hate it. He definitely wanted nothing more than to be one with his family again. Or well... Maybe not again because even back then, he wasn't one with them. "I know, babe. I know. You guys are all that I need." And it was the truth. He felt perfectly content living like this. He felt a small smile form on his lips at Antonio's words when he told him that he never deserved that. "It's okay. It's a lot better now because I have you with me." He assured him with a gentle smile on his lips. "Plus, if I didn't have them as my parents, I wouldn't have had the chance to meet you, babe. So it's definitely not all bad."
Ethan chuckled at Antonio's words before nodding his head in agreement. "Exactly. So it just seems like I have to suck it up." He said with a grin stretching his lips shortly after. "You always do." He repeated, his voice soft as ever. It wasn't long before they were finally at the hotel and it was definitely worth the five stars title.
The room was definitely great, too. Exactly what you'd expect from a five-star hotel. "Sure, yeah. That sounds like a great plan." He was definitely very happy about Toni's decision to stay here instead. "I'd like nothing more than to have you for myself for a while, too." Ethan said with a grin forming on his lips. He reached out for the menu so that he could look at the choices. "Let's go for red wine. Fitting for a fancy hotel room, wouldn't you agree?" Ethan said with a smile resting on his lips as he placed the menu down on the bedside table. "Why don't you order for us and I'll take a quick shower? You can join me once you're done, if you want." He offered with a soft smile tugging at his lips before he leaned forward to press a quick kiss on Toni's lips. He leaned back not long after and turned around so he could start making his way to the bathroom, murmuring a soft 'woah' under his breath because the bathroom was definitely quite fancy too.
"I'm half-expecting the shower to pour money, I don't know why." He said from where he was in the bathroom. "Oh wow, my voice sounds great in here. It's the... ah.. what do they call it? Acrylic? No, that's the nail stuff... Acoustics, yeah. Sounds pretty nice in here." Ethan rambled as he slowly but surely undressed, neatly placing his clothes aside before he reached out to adjust the temperature of the water and the pressure of it before he finally took a shower, wiping away all of his anxiety and sadness or whatever was left of it, his body relaxing under the warmth of the water. It felt good, to finally be able to relax like this. He liked it quite a lot. He did wait for a bit to see if Toni would join him or not. He hoped for the former.

Antonio knew that his words were cheesy but the grin that lighted up Ethan's face was exactly what he had been hoping for. It had been easy for Antonio to stand up for his husband and their relationship against Ethan's parents but in the space of a few moments he had seen Ethan revert back to being the scared kid he was when they met who only wanted to earn his parents' approval and Antonio knew that he never wanted Ethan to go back to being that person, not when he had been working so hard to move on from it. Ethan deserved so much better than the way his parents treated him and Antonio honestly hoped that his husband could see that now. "Not as good as you though," he grinned. Ethan was a hazard when he was alone in the kitchen at the best of times but Antonio couldn't deny that he looked cute when he tried. "It would," Antonio agreed. He still had hope that Ethan’s parents would come around and do right by their son for once in their lives but whether or not that would happen remained to be seen. "That’s good because you’re stuck with us," he said, knowing that the kids wouldn’t want to be without Ethan now anymore than he would. The girls had welcomed him into their family straight away and Antonio finally knew what it was like to be in love with someone and have them be in love with him in return and it was something that he knew he never wanted to lose. "That’s very true, there is a silver lining after all although with the way our paths crossed again when you got here I like to think we would have met sooner or later." he said sincerely. The chances of them finding each other again after such a long time were so slim but it had happened anyway. It was the war that had let them learn so much about each other and spend so much time together, though, so he knew that there was some good to what had happened after all. Ethan’s next words were enough to draw a smile to Antonio’s face. He knew that this couldn’t have been easy for Ethan and he wanted to make sure that he had the chance to let whatever he was feeling out if he needed to but right now Antonio was amazed at just how well Ethan seemed to be doing. For a minute Ethan had looked like the scared boy he’d met when they were fighting in the war but now Antonio was starting to see that all of the hard work Ethan had put in to moving on from them hadn’t gone to waste after all. "And I always will," Antonio said, his smile widening as he looked over at Ethan. Money wasn’t an issue for them and it wasn’t very often that they got to spend a night alone together without any of their family around so he knew that he wanted to make the most of it while it lasted. "I think we’ve earned that after today," he admitted as Ethan said that said he wanted to have him to himself for a while as well. "Red wine sounds great, we should get some food too," Antonio suggested, knowing that it would probably be a good idea to have something in their stomachs to soak up the wine. Ethan’s next suggestion was enough to take Antonio by surprise but it made his smile return nonetheless. "I definitely want to," he nodded, letting his hand rest against Ethan’s cheek as he kissed him back. Grabbing the menu as Ethan headed for the shower, Antonio couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke. "It wouldn’t surprise me given how grand this place is," he chuckled. It really was a lot nicer than Antonio had expected so nothing would surprise him at this point. "Are you trying to tempt me into joining you?" he asked, his voice laced with amusement as he spoke. "It’s working," he added with a grin, glancing over the menu before ordering them both a bottle of wine and something to eat. Once he was done he headed into the bathroom and undressed, leaving his clothes in a pile next to Ethan’s before joining him in the shower. Running his hands along Ethan’s shoulders, Antonio kissed his neck gently. “I’m so proud of you for what you did today,” he admitted gently, hoping that Ethan would know just how much he meant it. Not as good as you though, It would, That’s good because you’re stuck with us, That’s very true, there is a silver lining after all although with the way our paths crossed again when you got here I like to think we would have met sooner or later.
Ethan chuckled at Toni's words before he nodded his head in agreement. "Very, very true." He teasingly agreed along, inflating his own ego. "I happen to look cute in everything, but y'know, an apron might just be my best look yet." Ethan teased with a chuckle following. "Especially when you're standing next to me with your trusty extinguisher." He added a moment later. There was no denying that Ethan was a safety hazard in the kitchen, having burnt one too many pans and way too many meals. But Ethan was definitely not a quitter, so he kept worming his way back to the kitchen to cook more meals. He'll get there one day, right? Just gotta keep practicing. "Oh, definitely. I would've been a goner from the moment you opened the door, not gonna lie. A hot and single dad with two great daughters, what's not to like?" Ethan's lips stretched to form a grin as he looked over at his husband.
And I always will, I think we’ve earned that after today, Red wine sounds great, we should get some food too, I definitely want to, It wouldn’t surprise me given how grand this place is, Are you trying to tempt me into joining you? It’s working, I’m so proud of you for what you did today,
Ethan's lips formed a soft smile at Antonio's words. "And so will I." He added a moment later, meaning every word of it. Ethan considered it for a moment before his shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. "Ah, surprise me. You know me, I will literally eat anything." Ethan said when Toni said that they should get some food as well. A grin formed on his lips when Toni said he definitely wanted to join him in the shower. "I was hoping you'd say that." He turned to make his way into the bathroom so he could get undressed to have a much-needed shower to wash away all the negativity and the sadness. A chuckle echoed in the bathroom at Toni's question. "Uh, maybe? Is it working?" Ethan asked in a teasing voice, his lips stretching into a grin when he got his answer. "Knew it," he murmured under his breath, his grin still on his lips.
It didn't take long for Toni to join him and when he did, a smile immediately formed on his lips because his hands were soon running along his shoulders, a touch that made release a content sigh, his body melting slightly as he felt his lips on his neck. It felt really nice. "Thank you." Ethan whispered in a soft voice, knowing that Toni was saying this from the bottom of his heart and not just saying it to make him feel better, he meant every word of it. He eventually turned around to face Toni, his lips immediately forming a smile. "I love you." His hand lifted to gently cup Toni's cheek. "I love you so much." He leaned forward to press their lips together, hoping that his actions would convey just how much he loved Antonio.

“You’re right about that,” Antonio chuckled. He knew that Ethan was just messing around but he really did look cute no matter what and Antonio had no problem admitting that. It had taken him a long time to accept the fact that he felt more than friendship towards Ethan, he hadn’t thought that he would ever end up in a relationship with another guy but he knew now that accepting the way he felt was the best decision that he’d ever made. There was a reason why his past relationships had never worked out, they weren’t right for him and now he knew why. “Investing in one of those was definitely a good call,” he added with a grin. He could have easily tried to keep Ethan out of the kitchen altogether but Antonio knew that he didn’t want to do that. Ethan wasn’t great in the kitchen but he always tried his best and Antonio knew that his intentions were always good. Ethan always tried to look out for all of them and that was one of the things that Antonio loved most about him. “And here I was thinking it was my personality that won you over,” Antonio laughed, his tone light and teasing as he spoke. This was a completely different Ethan to the one he’d seen when they were at his parents’ house and for that he was truly grateful. He knew that Ethan could easily be trying to put on a brave face but right now at least he seemed genuinely happy and Antonio couldn’t deny that he was glad about that. Antonio knew that they could have stayed just about anywhere for the night but considering everything that had happened that day he knew that they might as well go for somewhere that would be comfortable for them. Money wasn’t an issue so they didn’t have to worry about that and it meant that he got to spoil Ethan for a while as well then he knew that he definitely wasn’t going to argue. “I know you will,” Antonio said, a smile touching his lips as Ethan said that he would spoil him too. They were just as bad as each other in that respect but Antonio knew that that wasn’t a bad thing. “You always do,” he teased as Ethan said that he would literally eat anything. “I’ll see what they’ve got.” Antonio wasn’t hungry just yet but he knew that it would take a while for the food to be brought up and considering that they’d had a long day he knew that it would do them both a world of good. As Ethan spoke again, Antonio couldn’t help but laugh. “Trying to seduce your husband? That’s a dirty tactic,” he said even though the truth was that he didn’t mind in the least. As Ethan asked if what he was trying was working, Antonio rolled his eyes playfully. Ethan knew exactly what he was doing and that was something that Antonio had grown used to during their time together. It didn’t take Antonio too long to place their order and once he had done so he didn’t hesitate in joining Ethan. Pressing a kiss to his neck, Antonio started to apply a little pressure to Ethan’s shoulders as he tried to work the tension out of them. Within moments Ethan turned around to face him, though, and Antonio couldn’t stop a smile from forming on his face at Ethan’s words. “I love you too,” he said, that love showing in his eyes as he leaned into the hand that was resting against his cheek before he kissed Ethan back, pouring everything he had into the kiss. Investing in one of those was definitely a good call,
Ethan chuckled at Toni's words before he nodded his head in agreement. "Yup. A very good call." He teased with a grin forming on his lips shortly after. "Now, we can be extra safe while I'm playing chef in the kitchen." He added a moment later, his smile still present on his lips.
And here I was thinking it was my personality that won you over, I know you will, You always do, I’ll see what they’ve got. Trying to seduce your husband? That’s a dirty tactic,
Ethan laughed at that before his shoulders lifted and dropped in a quick shrug. "Who says it can't be both?" He questioned, his grin still present on his lips. It felt good to go back to his old bantering ways with his husband, it goes to show that Ethan was slowly but surely beginning to feel a lot more like himself instead of this hollow version of himself he'd felt when he was with his parents. The scared little boy who couldn't stand up to his parents' verbal abuse. "Hell yeah." Ethan said with a grin forming on his lips when Toni told him that he was going to see what they've got. He wasn't all that hungry but he also knew that room service took a hot minute to arrive, so he was certain that he was going to be starving by the time the food gets here. "Sorry," he said when his husband said it was a dirty tactic to try and seduce him but you know what? He barely sounded apologetic. "C'mere and I can make it up to you." Ethan said with a grin forming on his lips.
A soft sigh left Ethan's lips when Toni worked the tension in his shoulders, the pressure making him tip his head back, perfectly content with the added pressure because it helped loosen some of the knots there. Though he turned around not long after and faced Toni with a gentle smile on his lips, letting the man know how much he loved him and when their lips pressed together, he relaxed against his husband and allowed himself to sink into the feeling for as long as possible as he allowed his hands to grow familiar with his husband's body again until he stopped and leaned back with a content smile on his lips. "Thank you, for everything. Especially for being here with me." Ethan leaned forward to press a gentle kiss against his husband's cheek before he leaned back. "You mean so much to me, Toni. I don't know what I would've done without you in my life." Ethan whispered, his eyes focusing on his husband as a gentle smile formed on his lips.

“It is cute seeing you try, I used to burn everything when I was first learning to cook,” Antonio admitted. He’d never really had to worry too much before the girls had come along but he had soon come to realise that he couldn’t let them rely on takeout or microwave meals the way he had done for a long time. When it was just him he hadn’t had to think about what he was going to eat too much and while he and Samara were together they’d either eaten out a lot or she had done the cooking. Antonio had learned to do a lot of things over the years but cooking was something that he had never worried about. It was a complete disaster in the beginning but as time went on he’d managed to get the hang of it and he knew that it would only be a matter of time before Ethan did too. “It is cute seeing you try though,” Antonio added with a smile. That was why he didn’t tend to stop Ethan when he wanted to try cooking something, he just made sure that he was close at hand in case his husband needed him. Ethan was a phoenix so Antonio knew that he didn’t need to worry about him too much but he still didn’t like the idea of him getting hurt. Ethan was already starting to seem much more like his old self and for that Antonio was glad. He knew how hard it had been for Ethan to see his parents again and it had taken a lot of courage for him to even make the trip to see them. Ethan had known that it wouldn’t go well but even so Antonio had hoped that it would because he knew how much Ethan wanted to build a relationship with his parents and Antonio knew that it would be good for the kids to have their grandparents in their lives as well. As Ethan spoke, Antonio couldn’t help but laugh. “I’ll take that,” he chuckled. “We were both in denial for a while anyway.” He knew why, especially after seeing the way that Ethan’s parents were with him, but Antonio knew that it really didn’t matter now. He was happy and he knew that Ethan was too regardless of what had happened in the past. It didn’t take him long to look over the menu and as Ethan apologised, Antonio felt a smile form on his face. “That’s the least sincere apology I’ve heard in a long time,” he teased, his smile widening as Ethan beckoned him over. “And how do you plan on doing that?” he asked, his expression turning playful as he looked over at his husband. Working the tension out of Ethan’s shoulders, Antonio pressed a gentle kiss to his husband’s neck as Ethan sighed. It wasn’t long before Ethan turned to face him and they began to explore each other. The smile on Ethan’s face was enough to bring a smile back to Antonio’s lips as well and he let his hand rest against his husband’s cheek. “You know I never would have let you go through this alone,” he said gently. Ethan had suggested going alone at first but Antonio had insisted on joining him and he was glad that he had done. “You’re never going to have to find out, I’m always going to be here for you,” Antonio assured him. “I love you. So much.”ETHAN ALVAREZ

It is cute seeing you try, I used to burn everything when I was first learning to cook, It is cute seeing you try though,
Ethan grinned as he took a moment to himself to imagine Antonio burning his food again and again which made his grin turn into a chuckle instead as he lifted his hand to cover his mouth, whispering a soft 'sorry' under his breath because the image was just really funny to Ethan. "I can just imagine it." Ethan said with yet another chuckle following before he shook his head. Ethan's grin returned to his lips when he processed Toni's words. "Oh, thank you. Prepare for even more cuteness when we go back, because I definitely wanna make us some Lasagna." Ethan's stomach almost started grumbling at the thought of consuming some food, especially Lasagna which was probably one of his favorite dishes. But right now, he wasn't all that hungry yet but he knew that after a much needed shower, his appetite will return and he will no longer be affected by the sadness that he was feeling.
I’ll take that, We were both in denial for a while anyway.
Ethan chuckled and nodded his head in agreement. "Yeah, we were." He agreed with his husband, his smile returning to his lips. "I just didn't think that I'd fall for a guy, especially with the fact that I've always been with women. But then it clicked that even though I was with them, I was only ever thinking about you." Ethan admitted with a half-smile forming on his lips and once it clicked, he no longer cared about the gender of his lover and followed his heart, which was quite possibly the best decision he's ever made. "I guess I have my parents to thank for my denial, too." There was a hint of bitterness in his words as he spoke about his parents. "They made it perfectly clear that finding a wife and building a family with her was my only option. Kinda, uh, kinda f*cked up." Ethan breathed out a chuckle, a little bit of his sadness returning once more but he quickly pushed it back and cleared his throat, focusing on what he was doing once more.
That’s the least sincere apology I’ve heard in a long time, And how do you plan on doing that? You know I never would have let you go through this alone, You’re never going to have to find out, I’m always going to be here for you, I love you. So much.
Ethan laughed at Toni's words before he just shrugged his shoulders, not at all ashamed of his very insincere apology. "Well..." Ethan trailed off, his tongue running over the surface of his bottom lip. "I think I'm gonna show you, instead." Ethan let his eyes appreciatively roam Toni's body before his eyes eventually moved back up again to meet Toni's. "I know. I tried to tell you that I can do this alone, but you made it perfectly clear that you won't let me do this alone." Ethan's lips stretched to form a soft smile, his eyes focused on the other, watching him with a tenderness in his gaze. "I really appreciate that." He appreciated that Toni was sticking with him through thick and thin, proving that the vows that they had shared weren't just words but promises and he really felt lucky. "And I'm always going to be here for you, Toni." Ethan said with a tenderness in his voice. "And I love you, so, so much."
He leaned forward again to reconnect their lips, the kiss starting out soft at first to show his appreciation and his love for Toni before it began gaining a little more heat and that showcased how much he craved Toni, his hands growing a little more adventurous once more and it was clear that he was planning on showing Toni just how he'd planned to make it up to the other. He planned on showing just how much he loved Toni and how much he appreciated having him in his life. He supported him more than anyone had ever done in his life and he loved him. He was really, really thankful that he'd met Toni again.
***
Ethan stepped out of the shower with Toni's hand clasped in his own as he turned to press a final kiss against Toni's lips then he released his hand to fetch a robe for Toni and then handed it over to him before he put on his robe, releasing a soft groan at how fluffy it felt. He left the bathroom and headed to the bed where he sat down, looking perfectly content. He patted the spot next to him with a loving smile on his lips, his blue eyes focused solely on his husband. "C'mere, let's cuddle a bit while waiting for room service."

The girls were too young to remember when Antonio had started learning how to cook and for that he was grateful. He hadn’t needed to worry too much in the beginning but he had realised pretty quickly that he hadn’t wanted to become one of those parents who only ever fed their kids takeout or microwave meals. He had managed to get by on those when it was just him but he had wanted better for his daughters and he didn’t regret putting in the effort one bit although the way Ethan laughed before whispering sorry was enough to bring an amused smile to Antonio’s lips. “Are you making fun of me?” he teased, knowing that he didn’t really mind one bit. Ethan had been his best friend for such a long time and they often teased each other but they never meant anything by it and they both knew that. As Ethan said that he wanted to make them lasagne when they got home, Antonio’s smile turned genuine. “I’m looking forward to it,” he said gently. He knew that it was one of Ethan’s favourite dishes so he couldn’t deny that it would be good to see him make it and he would probably make sure that either he or Ela was on hand to help in case Ethan needed it. It was strange now to look back at just how long they had spent living in denial about what was going on between them but deep down Antonio knew that it never would have happened any other way. “It was the same for me. Before you I’d never even thought about being with a guy but even though you died and I thought I would never get to see you again I just couldn’t let go of you,” he admitted. Antonio knew now that that was real love, he had tried to settle down a few times after the war but it had never felt right and he had always found his thoughts drifting back to Ethan. He hadn’t felt ready to admit that he was in love with his best friend then but now he didn’t have to worry about that and he really was glad. It didn’t matter to him that Ethan was a guy, all that mattered was the way that Ethan made him feel and Antonio was glad that they hadn’t let their own denial stand in their way. “My parents drilled the same thing into me, I think it’s just how they were all brought up,” he admitted as he brought his hand up and let it rest gently against Ethan’s cheek. Those beliefs were old fashioned now but their parents were all born into a completely different time and Antonio was doing his best to remember that. Even the time that he and Ethan were born into wasn’t accepting of same-sex relationships but now things were different and they were free to be together without having to worry. Ethan’s apology wasn’t sincere at all but then again Antonio hadn’t really expected it to be and as Ethan said that he was going to show him instead, Antonio’s smile returned. “I like the sound of that,” he admitted, a pleasant shiver running up his spine as Ethan’s eyes wandered over his body. “It’s like I told you, you have my back and I have yours. For better or worse,” he said, leaning in and pressing a kiss to Ethan’s lips. He’d meant every word the day they’d gotten married and he knew that Ethan had too. They knew what it was like to live without each other and neither of them wanted to go through that again. He could have let Ethan visit his parents on his own but Ethan had told him some about what it had been like for him while he was growing up and even though Antonio had known that Ethan’s parents wouldn’t accept their relationship straight away he had still known that there was no way he could let them undo all of the hard work at getting over everything that they had put him through that Ethan had been doing during their time together. As Ethan spoke again, Antonio felt a smile form on his face. “I know. I lost you once, I’m not losing you again,” he said, not offering any resistance as Ethan leaned forward and kissed him. Kissing him back, it started out gentle but then turned into something so much more and Antonio’s instincts took over as he lost himself in the moment, knowing that more than anything he wanted to make his husband know just how much he meant to him.
Following Ethan out of the shower, Antonio kissed him back before taking the robe from him and slipping it on and heading back into the bedroom. “You know, I could get used to that,” he admitted, his smile turning mischievous as he looked over at his husband. As Ethan sat down on the bed and patted the spot next to him, Antonio didn’t hesitate in joining him and wrapping his arms around him. “I like the sound of that,” he admitted as he kissed Ethan’s temple gently. “Are you sure you’re okay?” he asked, knowing that he wanted Ethan to have the chance to talk about what had happened freely if he needed to. Are you making fun of me? I’m looking forward to it
Ethan feigned an innocent look at Toni's question, pointing at his chest as if to ask if he was asking him that. Though it wasn't long before a grin formed on his lips and he nodded his head a few times. "Maybe a little bit." He teased back, chuckling again when he thought about it for a moment.
It was the same for me. Before you I’d never even thought about being with a guy but even though you died and I thought I would never get to see you again I just couldn’t let go of you,
A gentle smile formed on his lips at Toni's words as he nodded his head slowly to let his husband know that he was listening to every word. "I'm sorry you had to go through that, Toni. Me dying and everything. I wish I had known about what I was beforehand. It probably... would have hurt less, right?" Ethan's life would have been a lot easier if he had known that he was a Phoenix.
My parents drilled the same thing into me, I think it’s just how they were all brought up,
Ethan breathed out a soft 'yeah' at Toni's words. "Yeah, I think so too. This black and white outlook at the world." He shook his head. "But I guess the world back then, for them, wasn't as forgiving as it is now, so I get it." Ethan added a moment later as an afterthought, thinking about how it would be like to announce your preference in men during a time where such a thing wasn't considered normal.
I like the sound of that, It’s like I told you, you have my back and I have yours. For better or worse, I know. I lost you once, I’m not losing you again,
"Yeah, you're right. I have your back and you have mine. Through thick and thin." Ethan said with a gentle smile forming on his lips. "I'm not going anywhere," he promised against Toni's lips and it was a promise that he was going to try his hardest to keep. He'd already left Toni's side once, he had no plans to do it again.
Ethan's lips stretched into a grin at Toni's words. "Good, you should." He said with his grin still present on his lips. He laid down on the bed and once Toni joined him there, he leaned against him with a content sigh falling from his lips, his hand reaching for Toni's hand to hold it in his own, their fingers intertwined as his thumb traced shapeless patterns on the back of Toni's hand, looking perfectly content right here with his husband. It filled his heart with so much warmth.
He processed Toni's question before releasing a small hum, his eyes focused on his hand which was holding onto Toni's. "I am now." He answered truthfully. "And I'll be even better once the wine arrives." He added a moment later with a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "I guess I'm just, uh, disappointed that today didn't go as planned with my parents, but then again, it's kinda my fault for getting my hopes up in the first place. I knew deep down that they were going to be the same because even if the whole world changes, they're going to be the same, but I kept hoping and hoping that they'd be different." Ethan let out a small sigh, his eyes focused on the way his thumb continuously traced patterns against the back of Toni's hand. "But you know what the craziest part is? I'm a big brother, apparently. I never saw that coming."
"I just hope they're treating them better and if they aren't, I hope they take their advice and come to us. We'll take care of 'em, won't we?" A small smile formed on his lips, knowing the answer to that question already so it was more of a rhetorical one. He knew Toni like the back of his hand, after all.

“I thought so,” Antonio chuckled as Ethan confirmed that he was making fun of him a little. He hadn’t had any trouble sharing what he was like in the kitchen at first with Ethan and he definitely didn’t regret it, Antonio knew that Ethan was the one person that he could be honest about everything with and not have to worry about being judged. There was a time when the two of them hadn’t gotten along too well at first but the situation they had found themselves in had left them with no choice but to put their differences aside and learn how to work together. Antonio had done his best to look out for Ethan back then and make sure that he didn’t end up getting hurt and the guy had become the person that he was the closest to in the world. Losing him was more painful than Antonio had ever let himself admit and as Ethan said he was sorry he’d had to go through that before saying that it probably would have hurt less if he’d known that Ethan was a phoenix, Antonio’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “It might have done but I’m never going to be okay with seeing you hurting, let alone going through that,” he said gently. “You mean far too much to me.” He had held Ethan as he’d died and it was something that had haunted him right up until Ethan had shown up on his doorstep all those years later. “Exactly,” Antonio nodded, knowing that Ethan was right. “To be honest I’m glad that was what my parents focused on rather than the fact that we’re meant to be enemies,” he admitted. Dragons and phoenixes weren’t meant to get along, it was a feud that went back even longer than his parents could remember but it was something that some still clung to. It wasn’t like that for the two of them or the family they had built together though, as far as Antonio was concerned he and Ethan weren’t any different from each other and he was so glad that Ethan was a phoenix because otherwise he might well have lost him all those years ago. As Ethan said that he had Antonio’s back and Antonio had his through thick and thin, Antonio felt a smile form on his face. “Just as it should be,” he nodded before kissing Ethan once more as he said that he wasn’t going anywhere. “I’ll hold you to that.” Ethan had told him once not to go anywhere that he couldn’t follow and that worked both ways. “Is that a promise?” Antonio asked, his smile widening as Ethan said he should get used to that. It had taken them a long time to get to this point but now they were so comfortable together and Antonio knew that he wouldn’t have it any other way. He knew Ethan as well as he knew himself and that was something that he had never had with anyone else before. He’d always tried his best to make relationships work but they never had and he had thought that he was just destined to remain alone. As it turned out, however, he had already found his other half and Antonio was perfectly content lying there with his arms wrapped around Ethan now, watching as his husband traced patterns over the back of his hand with his thumb. “Give them time. Now they know you’re alive and they know they’ve got grandkids out there so they might come around,” he said gently. He wasn’t sure whether Ethan’s parents would ever accept him being a part of their son’s life but even if they only came around for Ethan and the kids then Antonio knew that he could live with that. More than anything he wanted Ethan to be happy and even though he’d said that he was fine without his parents being a part of his life, deep down Antonio knew that Ethan really had wanted to fix things with them so he still hoped that he might get another chance one day. “That was pretty unexpected,” he agreed as Ethan said that he’d never seen him being a big brother coming. From what Ethan had said it had sounded like his parents hadn’t really wanted one child, let alone three, so it was a surprise to say the least. As Ethan said that they would take care of his brother and sister if his parents didn’t, though, Antonio nodded. “Of course we will. They’re family,” he said gently, knowing that there was no way that they would turn their backs on them if they needed help. ETHAN ALVAREZ

It might have done but I’m never going to be okay with seeing you hurting, let alone going through that, You mean far too much to me.
Ethan's lips stretched into a soft sad smile at Toni's words before nodding his head a few times. "Okay." It made a lot of sense to him and he hoped that Toni won't ever have to go through that pain again. "You mean far too much to me too, Toni. You really do." Ethan said in a soft voice, meaning every word of it because his husband meant the world to him and he didn't even want to think about a world without him in it.
Exactly, To be honest I’m glad that was what my parents focused on rather than the fact that we’re meant to be enemies, Just as it should be, I’ll hold you to that.
Ethan nodded his head once in agreement. "Oh, yeah. That whole outdated thing about our species being enemies. I hate that." Ethan wrinkled his nose in distaste at the thought. "I guess we're living proof that not every dragon and phoenix have to hate each other and maybe one day, that will be in the past entirely." A soft smile appeared at his lips at Toni's words, nodding his head a few times. He knew all too well that he was going to try his absolute hardest to stay true to that promise.
Is that a promise? Give them time. Now they know you’re alive and they know they’ve got grandkids out there so they might come around,
Ethan grinned at Toni's words before he nodded his head a few times. "Mhm. It's a promise." He added a moment later, blue eyes relaxing on his husband, watching him quietly for a few seconds before his smile once more became apparent. "Yeah..." Ethan let out a soft sigh, his eyes relaxing on their intertwined fingers once again. "But I'm not really holding my breath." He added a moment later. He wasn't going to get his hopes up again. It hurt enough the first time. He'd be a fool to willingly put him through that pain.
That was pretty unexpected, Of course we will. They’re family,
Ethan nodded his head in agreement with Toni because that was definitely unexpected. "Yup." He didn't hate the idea, really. If anything, it put a small smile on his lips even though they had regarded him with an odd look when they first saw him. "I don't think they even knew I existed." It sounded a lot like his parents to run away from explaining everything. "Yeah, they are." He added a moment later. He didn't hate them. He hated his parents.
But he'd be more than happy to welcome his siblings into his life if they chose to come after them. Ethan looked like he wanted to say something but then there was a knock on the door and soon, the door was opening but they didn't make their way all inside, just pushed the cart inside with the food and the bottle of wine before making themselves scarce to not disturb their guests.
Ethan gave Toni's hand a gentle squeeze before finally pushing himself up from the bed so he could bring the cart in and once it was in front of the bed, he popped open the wine bottle and poured them a glass. "Here you go." Ethan offered with a gentle smile on his lips before lifting his own glass up to his lips to take a quick sip, enjoying the lingering taste on his tongue. He sat down on the bed again, taking a few more sips. "This is really great," Ethan said with a soft smile resting on his lips and he really meant it. He liked the hotel room, liked the five-star treatment and he most definitely liked the wine, too. He took another sip, enjoying the lingering taste and the way the alcohol helped him loosen up and forget about his sadness.
It was perfect.

Antonio knew that Ethan was trying to make him feel better but the truth was that Antonio knew that he would never like seeing Ethan in pain and he knew that he didn’t want to see him die again if he could help it, even if he would resurrect afterwards. Antonio had already lost Ethan once and he could still remember the pain of seeing Elias when they arrived at his apartment as well. Too many people he cared about seemed to get hurt or die and Antonio knew that he didn’t want that to happen again. The girls had already lost their mom and he knew that he didn’t want them to lose anyone else either, even if it was only temporary. As Ethan nodded, Antonio felt a small smile form on his face in return. “So don’t go doing anything too reckless, okay?” he asked, hoping that Ethan wouldn’t. He knew that his husband had no problem putting himself on the line when others were in danger and that was a trait they shared but Antonio knew that he didn’t want to lose Ethan for good one day so he didn’t want him pushing his luck if he could help it. As Ethan spoke again, Antonio’s smile turned into a genuine one. “I love you,” he said gently. He had already lost Ethan once when he’d died and Ethan had thought that he’d lost him too after the cave collapsed so they knew what it was like to face a future without each other and Antonio knew that Ethan didn’t want that anymore than he did. “You and me both. I still don’t know where that idea came from,” Antonio admitted. He wasn’t sure whether anyone alive today remembered but it seemed crazy to him anyway. Ethan wasn’t his enemy and never had been and neither was Elias. They were his family just as much as the girls, Diego and his parents were. “Here’s hoping. I wonder if your parents believe it or not,” he said thoughtfully. He knew that Ethan hadn’t known that he was a phoenix when they met so the conversation Ethan’s parents should have had with him about what he was hadn’t happened but now he couldn’t help but wonder what their views on it would be. He hoped for Ethan’s sake that they would be able to see past it all and realise that Ethan was happy but he wasn’t sure. As Ethan confirmed that what he’d said was a promise, Antonio couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m going to hold you to it,” he chuckled, knowing that he wouldn’t hesitate in doing just that. It was definitely unexpected but it was something they had both needed and he was glad to see that Ethan seemed to be feeling better now. “No matter what happens you’ve still got all of us, we’re not going anywhere,” Antonio assured him, lifting their joined hands so he could press a light kiss to his husband’s knuckles. He knew that it wasn’t the same as having parents and siblings around but he hoped that they would be able to fill that void a little at least. As Ethan said that his siblings didn’t even seem to know he existed, Antonio’s expression softened. “That’s pretty messed up and I wish I could say that I’m surprised but from what you’ve told me about your parents and what I saw today, I’m not,” he said gently. “You deserve so much better than the way they treat you, I hope you know that.” It really wasn’t any wonder why Ethan was the way he was back when the two of them first met, now it all made a lot of sense and Antonio wanted to spare his husband from falling back into those old habits of letting his parents say whatever they wanted to him if he could help it. For a moment Ethan looked like he wanted to say something else but then the food arrived and Antonio couldn’t help but smile at his husband as Ethan squeezed his hand before going to grab the cart. “Thank you,” he said, taking the glass from Ethan and lifting it to his lips so he could take a sip. Antonio looked around them for a moment as he said that this was great before nodding. “You’re right, it is,” he agreed. “Perhaps we should try and get away like this a little more often,” he suggested, knowing that it would be much easier now that Diego was around to keep an eye on the kids. So don’t go doing anything too reckless, okay?
Ethan felt a small smile touch his lips at Antonio's words before he nodded his head. "I won't. I promise." Ethan definitely had his moments at work where he made a reckless call that could cost him his life, but he never actually paid attention to that because his top priority was saving people and he always did that in the end, despite the dangers and the obstacles in his way. He always seemed to pick other people above himself, but he knew now more than ever that he wasn't just living for himself anymore. He had a family waiting for him back home and he knew they would be devastated if anything bad ever happened to him. It was a feeling that Ethan wasn't sure he could ever get used to.
He was finally important to someone.
Or in his case, multiple someones.
He really felt so lucky.
It was perfect for Ethan because he was raised thinking that he wasn't enough but now, he was finally enough. He was loved despite his mistakes and that's everything Ethan could ever ask for. So he was going to try his hardest not to make any reckless decisions that would put his life on the line. He had definitely done it a couple of times in the past and rumor has it, the newly added grey hairs in his captain's hair were his doing. Those were only rumors, of course. "I love you, too." Ethan said with a soft voice, his eyes focused solely on his husband.
"Hm. It's probably an ancient thing." Ethan offered with a shrug of his shoulders. He wasn't fixated on it, really. He wasn't he type of person to hate someone just because their ancestors had issues with each other. He was more than willing to give everyone a shot, no matter what. "They probably do, yeah." Ethan never really talked about what he was with his parents and because they had decided to keep their species a secret, Ethan died without knowing he could be reborn again. "My dad treated you badly without knowing you're a dragon, I don't even want to imagine how he would have treated you if he had known." The thought brought a frown to Ethan's features almost immediately, a bitter taste residing on his tongue.
"I know, babe. Thank you." Ethan said in a soft voice when Toni told him that no matter what happens, he's still got all of them. His heart leapt in his chest when Toni pressed a kiss against his knuckles, the gesture pretty sweet. "Yeah, it definitely doesn't surprise me, either." Ethan breathed out, his shoulders lifting and dropping quickly in a shrug. "And it's definitely messed up." He agreed with his husband, his jaw clenching slightly as he thought about it for a few moments, the thought once again bringing a bitter taste on his tongue. "I know that now better than ever, Toni. It's thanks to you guys, honestly. That's why I'm not as shattered about this because I have a family of my own now and maybe family isn't something that you're born into but something that you find and it seems like I've finally found one of my own."
"Oh, definitely. Work can get really stressful at times, so this seems like the perfect getaway when things get hectic." Ethan said with a half-smile forming on his lips as he lifted his glass back up to his lips to take yet another sip before he finally finished his drink in one go and reached to pour himself another glass, enjoying the taste of the alcohol as it seems to loosen the tension in his shoulders. He reached out for the fork and knife to start eating, finally finding his appetite again. "Mmm, this really good too." Ethan took yet another bite before reaching out for his wine glass to take a sip, looking perfectly content right now.

“I’ll hold you to that,” Antonio said, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at his husband. Antonio knew that everything Ethan did was in the interests of helping people, they were both guilty of putting themselves in danger to help others and that was a part of the job but Antonio knew that he didn’t want to end up losing Ethan again. There were never any guarantees with their job and after the cave collapsed Ethan had already had to return home and tell the girls that he wasn’t going to make it home that day. They were both immortal and they weren’t easy to kill, at least not permanently in Ethan’s case, but they weren’t invincible and he knew that he didn’t want to end up finding himself in the same position that Ethan had that day. They were a family now, all five of them, and he knew that he wanted it to stay that way. The time they had spent together so far was short in comparison to the time they had spent apart but Antonio knew that that just made the time they had together that much more special. They knew what it was like to live without each other and it wasn’t something that either of them wanted to go through again. It had taken them a long time to get together and to get over the fact that they had both thought that they were just friends but it was clear that there was so much more between them now. Antonio had tried to fall for the person he was seeing before but he had never managed it, not even with Samara, and he knew that Ethan was the reason. He had fallen in love with him long before he had even realised it and he knew that he didn’t want to lose that. As Ethan said that he loved him too, Antonio’s expression softened and his hand came to rest against the back of Ethan’s neck as he drew him in for a kiss. “Probably. My parents have been around for a long time and even they’re not sure how it all started,” Antonio admitted. His parents had told him while he was growing up that dragons and phoenixes were meant to be enemies but he wasn’t sure that the two of them had ever truly believed it. The only problem their family had had in the past was with hunters so luckily his parents hadn’t seemed to mind when they had learned that Ethan was a phoenix, that had seemed to pale in comparison to everything else and for that he truly was grateful. “I probably wouldn’t have made it past the front door,” Antonio nodded. “I’m not too worried about your dad though, it won’t surprise me if your parents never accept that you’re with me and that’s fine. Their opinion doesn’t matter to me, only yours does. As long as you’re happy that’s all I care about,” Antonio said gently. It was Ethan who mattered to him, not the guy’s parents, and that was never going to change. “Besides, I can take whatever he throws at me,” he added. He had stood up to Ethan’s dad once already after seeing the way that the man was treating his son and he knew that he would do it again in an instant. Ethan had told him about what his parents were like but Antonio had never truly realised how bad things must have been for him until that day. “You don’t need to thank me, you’re stuck with us,” Antonio assured him, knowing that he wouldn’t have it any other way. As Ethan agreed that it was messed up that his siblings hadn’t seemed to know about him, Antonio nodded. “At least they know now,” he offered, knowing that perhaps some good might have come from the trip after all. “They know they’re not alone now so hopefully they’ll reach out if they need to.” Antonio knew that he wouldn’t be surprised if Ethan’s siblings were going through something similar to what he had gone through with his parents so he was glad they knew they had someone to turn to if they needed it. As Ethan spoke again, Antonio couldn’t stop a smile from working its way across his face. “You’ve definitely found one of your own, you belong with us,” he promised his husband. It had been that way from the moment that Ethan had shown up on the doorstep with Ela and that was never going to change. Taking a sip of his drink, Antonio nodded as Ethan said this seemed like the perfect getaway. “It does, we’ll have to do this more often,” he agreed, knowing that it would probably do them both some good to get away every now and then. They both worked so hard and he knew that they would end up going away with the kids at some point too but he couldn’t deny that having some time alone with his husband had an appeal all of its own. Setting his glass down, he started tucking into the meal before nodding as Ethan said the food was good too. “It is. Not a bad end to the day,” he said, a smile forming on his face as he took another bite. ETHAN ALVAREZ
