Matt couldn’t believe how well things were going right now. His relationship with Rebekah was better than ever, he had his friends around him and school was actually going a lot better than he had thought that it would. Matt still worked at the Grill as a way of keeping a roof over his head but he finally felt like he was on the right track. None of his family had ever gone to college, his dad had been a deadbeat even before he’d bailed from what his mom had told him and his mom had had a difficult enough time making it through high school. Vicki had been much the same and Matt had had his struggles with school as well but he’d managed to get through it. He had never thought of himself as the kind of guy to go to college, in fact he had actually considered becoming a cop, but he knew that he wanted to have a bit longer doing things that normal guys his age did rather than launching himself straight into a career. Right now he was happy and he knew that that was as it should be. Everything seemed to be falling into place not just for him but for his friends as well. Elena and Stefan had each other, Care and Dec did as well and Ty, well, he was still just as happy going from one girl to the next as ever. So much had happened over the last few years and they’d all had their eyes opened to a world that they hadn’t even known existed. It would have been easy to blame Stefan and Damon for bringing the supernatural into their lives but Matt knew that it would have found them eventually anyway. He had been taken and turned into a kitsune while Care and Dec had both been turned into chimeras. That wasn’t something that he could blame the Salvatores for and Matt had seen that they were trying to do the right thing so he knew that it was time to leave the past where it belonged. Stefan was a friend but Damon he’d still blamed for what had happened to Vicki although now Matt was finally ready to let that go considering that he knew now that there was good and bad in everyone. That day he’d spent some time with Rebekah before heading home to get ready for the trip the following day. Matt wasn’t used to travelling but the Whitmore football team had been asked to play an exhibition match and Matt had managed to swing the time off work so he was looking forward to it. He knew that the other team was good and he’d wanted to spend some time that evening studying their plays and learning what he could about them so that it would hopefully give his team an edge. He’d ordered himself a pizza as he studied their games that season before jumping in the shower. He was just getting dressed as the doorbell rang and he slipped his katana through the belt loops of his jeans before heading downstairs. He hadn’t known what to make of it at first but it felt like a part of him now and he never went anywhere without it. Thankfully it looked like a belt most of the time so he didn’t have to worry about it raising any suspicions. He knew that he was safe in his own home but it was a reflex more than anything and he fastened it before opening the door to make sure that it was who he was expecting. “Delivery for Donovan?” the guy asked which had Matt nodding. “That’s right, I’ll just grab the money,” he said as he turned to head into the living room where he knew he had left his wallet. “Do you mind if I wait inside? It’s coming down quite hard and I’ve still got a few more deliveries to make,” the guy asked and Matt shook his head. “Not at all, come on in,” he said before disappearing to retrieve his wallet. By the time he found it he turned to find the guy standing in the doorway to the living room. “Found it,” Matt said, holding the bills up as he made his way towards the guy before hesitating as he suddenly got the feeling that something was very wrong. “You know, you really should be more careful about who you invite into your home not that it would have mattered too much, your landlord was more than happy extend an invitation in case you didn’t,” the guy warned before lunging at him and knocking Matt to the floor, the breath quickly leaving Matt’s lungs as he did so. The two fought and the guy was able to get a few strong blows in before Matt was able to kick the guy off of him and climb to his feet. “Why are you doing this?” he demanded as he pulled the katana free and the pieces locked into place ready for him to use it. “Believe me kid, this is the last thing I want to be doing but someone’s put a hefty price on your head and it’s the only way I’ll ever be free,” the guy explained before advancing on him once more. Matt knew in that moment that he had no choice and he tried to keep his face composed as his katana sliced through flesh and cut into the vampire’s shoulder. It wouldn’t be enough to kill him but it should have been enough to at least slow him down but the vampire merely pulled the katana from his hands before pulling it free and throwing it behind him. Matt’s eyes went wide as the guy hit him hard and Matt was sent flying backwards through the coffee table. Spitting the blood out of his mouth, he clambered to his feet once more and clutched his side with one hand as he tried to put pressure on the wound that had opened up there and was already bleeding. “You don’t have to do this. Whatever trouble you’re in, my friends and I can help,” Matt offered although he could see that his words weren’t doing any good. “No one can help me, the only person I can count on is myself,” the guy said as he picked broke one of the chair legs to use as a weapon. Matt knew that a stake wouldn’t have as much of an effect on him as it would a vampire but it would still hurt and Matt was already losing blood. He had wanted to learn to control his abilities so that he wouldn’t hurt anyone but he had also suspected that they would come in handy at protecting him one day and that day had finally come. He didn’t want to hurt the guy but if it was a case of kill or be killed then Matt knew that he couldn’t take any chances. He did his best to fight the guy off but it wasn’t doing any good and even with his healing abilities the constant moving meant that his body wasn’t being given the chance to heal so he knew that he needed to do something drastic and with that in mind he sent a bolt of electricity at the vampire with his free hand which sent the vampire flying through the air into the hallway. Matt knew that he was a sitting duck where he was, the vampire was stronger than he was and while he knew how to fight so did the vampire so he knew that he needed to either get out of there or get help. A quick search for his phone after he got to his feet came up short and he cursed as he realised that he must have left it upstairs. He knew that he wouldn’t get far on his own in the state he was in so he had no choice but to call for help. Matt retrieved his katana before heading out into the hallway and was relieved to find that the guy seemed to be down for the count. It looked like he was really dead and Matt was half way up the stairs when he heard the telltale sharp intake of breath that told him that he had been wrong and before he could make it more than a few more steps the vampire had recovered and Matt let out a cry as the vampire’s fangs plunged into his neck. In that moment Matt was certain that he was going to die but it was then that a strange thing happened – the vampire began choking on his blood. “Your blood tastes wrong,” the guy said as he spat it out onto the floor. “Maybe you shouldn’t have tried to drink it then,” Matt retorted as he aimed a punch at the guy, using electricity to put more power in the punch than he would have been able to do otherwise which was enough to send the guy stumbling back down the stairs. Matt knew that it wouldn’t keep the guy distracted for long so he finally made it to the top of the stairs, not even caring about the blood trail he’d left all the way up the stairs. Stumbling along the landing he made it to his bedroom and was about to reach for his phone when the vampire hit him from behind and Matt fell, his head hitting the side of the dresser hard on his way down. His vision was foggy as he looked up at the face of his attacker and Matt opened his mouth to speak but couldn’t find the words and in that moment his thoughts turned to Rebekah. He had made her a promise that he wasn’t going anywhere and he’d fought as hard as he could but ultimately he’d still failed. “I know you won’t believe me but I really am sorry about this kid,” the vampire said before plunging his hand through Matt’s chest and ripping out his heart, letting it drop to the floor as the light left the kitsune’s eyes. With that done the vampire took a photo as proof of death and sent it off, the text already chiming to say that the money would be deposited in his nominated account as he left the house.
