He would’ve asked if it had been the Alpha who had driven Officer Mason to go after those kids but half a world away even the strongest of Alphas wouldn’t have had the ability to do it. What had happened in the woods that night was a problem born of this town, caused by something Chris was almost certain was still here. The murderous state the werewolf had been in was stripped away, whatever had caused it shattered, but in the process the man had been broken and now it seemed as though his Alpha had been determined to blow those cracks wide open and leave just rubble behind.
Chris curled his fingers tighter around the weapon and sighed. They’d dealt with Alphas like that before and most hadn’t walked away. They were dangerous, the sort that Gerard liked to stomp on like cockroaches – unless he had a use for them. ”He’d rather his people die than look for help.” Chris’ voice was low, rough, condemnatory. He huffed out a breath, shook his head as his brows rose. ”Maybe it’s best you don’t. You understand he was wrong? Looking for help from anybody isn’t a weakness, especially when it keeps you alive.” Was that the Alphas problem with it? That Kiba had survived and returned back with the sort of story that gave the pack hope that there was help out there of a different kind – even if it came from the villains of their little stories, the big bad hunters.
The big bad hunter doing the worst thing imaginable by taking the gun that would be turned on its owner off the table. Eyes still cool lit on the wolf’s face, held the one brown ones aimed back at him. The girl’s disappearance wasn’t on him – or his people – but there were plenty out there who could harm and would and Mason knew it. ”Hope isn’t stupid,” Chris corrected him, picking his way through another mouthful of food. ”You were working and there’s a chance you will again. You can’t live your life by other people’s rules.” If he had he would still on the end of Gerard’s leash. Chris cleared his throat, frowned for a moment before he nodded. ”No promises, but I’ll try.” He could’ve turned it into a deal, forced a promise out of the man not to try anything foolish but that would be another weight.
Lifting his burger to force another monotonous bite, Chris shook his head. That wasn’t the impression he’d got when he’d enquired over the officer but people in pain often only saw what they wanted to. He shifted on his seat, feeling the reassuring bump of the gun against his own hip. ”My family’s motto is to protect those who cannot protect themselves. That includes you right now, Officer Mason. I’m not giving you the weapon back. I can help you find a way through the full moon but it’s not going to include loading this weapon for you.” He met Kiba’s eye and shook his head firmly. ”No, I’m not going to help you turn that weapon on yourself.” At least now he had the Officer’s weapon, could prevent harm for the moment.
Pushing the plate away from himself, his appetite gone, Chris wiped his hands on a napkin. He was done with dinner, weighed down by the sheer number of people in this town in enough pain to want to end things. ”If that’s what I did for you then, then do you trust me to do that again now?” he asked simply as he reached into his pocket for his wallet. ”I can help you, continue to prove your Alpha wrong.” He was tempted to call him the wolf’s former Alpha but that would be salt in a wound. Chris tossed a few bills down on the table to cover both of their orders. He drew a card from his wallet, pushed that across the table towards the wolf. ”Will you call when the full moon comes?” Couching it as an order might’ve given it more weight but he was giving the man an option in a way. Help himself or sink further in.

| The wolf trusted the hunter. The reason he allowed him in his troubles. The wolf was really scared. He didn't know he was going crazy again. Everything was scary for him as being an omega was never good, Kiba knows that being a lone wolf was a death sentence. He was more scared of hurting others and this is why he needed the silver bullet. Kiba looked into Chris eyes as heard him commenting about his alpha choice not to trust the hunter or accepts his help if we were caught accepting an hunters help, he would kill us in front of the pack to show what will happen or banished you he explained.
Kiba finished the drink which Chris got him as he heard he would help him. The wolf accepted that, but he was confused when he said the motto had changed from what his alpha stated. That's not the motto I was told your family used. My alpha said it was much different. It was 'We hunt those, who hunt us?' it didn't matter to him as Kiba doesn't trust the alpha right now. Why would you help me? I am not human, I was never human. Why would your family help supernatural creatures in their code? Kiba kept his eyes locked onto his.
I trust you. You stopped me for hurting people, and I trust you to do it again. Can you promise that I definitely wouldn't hurt anyone ever? This includes you too he then picked up his card and pulled his phone out. He saved his number and placed it on the speed dial. I promise I will call you the night before the moon comes out. Thank you for helping me Chris, I really appreciate your support and friendship he got up and ready to leave the table feeling much better now that he got help on his side

Some alphas led with strength alone – like Scott, rising up as a true alpha – some were too much like Gerard, leading with fear. They kept their people under their thumbs, crushing until their people bowed under them. There was no room for argument if they were too terrified to speak back against a word you said. Gerard would have been the same if he’d gotten his wish. An Alpha with no remorse, practically a pet kanima on a leash to do his bidding. It would have destroyed Beacon Hills. If Kiba’s Alpha made the journey here he imagined he would attempt to do the same with the people he claimed as his here. As though they needed the added pressure. Mystic Falls had its own set of problems that refused to go away.
Chris sighed, his shoulders slumping beneath his shirt. Alphas like that would’ve been brought down by their own tyranny but few were before serious damage was done. He chewed mechanically, the food feeling dry in his throat. ”You’re not with your pack now. If you choose not to follow your alphas rule, he won’t be able to harm you.” The reach was too far, although if word got back the wolf might no longer be welcomed back by his pack. Not that it would leave him in a situation all that different from the one he was in now.
The Alphas words had twisted Kiba’s mind. It might seem as though words held little weight but even without real power behind them they could crush … they could linger. His family’s reputation had once been forged by Gerard alone, twisting what Marie-Jeanne Valet had accomplished centuries before. Chris’ chin came up as Kiba turned it around on him now, pride and pain both tightening his jaw and chilling his eyes. ”Your Alpha’s knowledge is outdated,” Chris said coolly. ”My family are proof that even hunters can change.” Leaning in, Chris propped an elbow carefully on the table and shook his head. ”Once upon a time my family killed indiscriminately. Now we protect those who cannot protect themselves and that includes creatures. Not everything with claws or fangs is capable of murder, or even of self protection.” That included the wolf before him. Something had twisted Kiba’s mind for a time, had left him out of it until either the incarceration or the wolfsbane he’d been laced with her broken whatever had a hold over him.
A muscle jumped in Chris’ jaw as he shook his head. There was no promise he could make that would guarantee the officer wouldn’t hurt anybody again. He wouldn’t even lie to try. Honesty was what he’d promised and that was all that he could give now. Chris plucked his jacket from the back of his seat and eyed the wolf steadily. ”There’s no guarantee for that but I promise you I’ll do what I can to try and help you not to.” And if the worst happened, he would make sure that life was protected in the end, no matter the outcome. Pushing to his feet, Chris slipped his coat on and nodded. ”It’s there before that if you need it. Take care of yourself Officer Mason.” Kiba had told him he wasn’t an officer anymore but there was still someone who cared for what was right in that damaged form.
He nodded to the man before he turned and headed out. If Mason could pull himself together he imagined there would still be a place for him in Liz Forbes’ force, as long as the Founder’s Council didn’t learn what he was. Appetite lost enough that the few mouthfuls he’d eaten still felt stuck fast his in his throat, Chris left the Grill, headed for home and the spread of information that was still giving him no clues to what had happened in this town.
