It wasn’t home.
He’d fixed the place up since the realtor had sold it to him as a ‘wonderful place for his grandkids to come visit’, adding the secure ‘cell’ in the basement, that hadn’t done a damn thing for Sam when they’d tried to stop things going too far, turning the dining room downstairs into a library of sorts, but still the place remained resolutely ‘not home’. The memories didn’t drift like smoke from the walls every time he looked around, the kitchen was missing the scars on the stove from where he’d had to teach himself to cook after he’d lost Karen and there was a distinct lack of his … stuff … around the place.
Bobby huffed out a breath, tugging books out of the box one of his contacts had sent down to him and setting them on the kitchen table. This was likely a temporary place for them all to stay but until he knew one way or another, he wasn’t about to take chances, especially not here.
This town was a lure to everything foul and murderous out there. Admittedly, it also called to those caught up in that world without layers of blood staining their hands red, but for the most part, this was a place that courted death on a daily basis. Azazel and his little demon followers had already caught them unawares here once and it had cost kids tainted with demon blood their lives. They were back, which shoulda been surprise enough, but getting to stand back up like Lazarus didn’t erase the stain that something like that left on your mind, on your heart.
Drawing in a deep breath, Bobby lifted a hand and pinched at the bridge of his nose. He should know, shouldn’t he. Up until heaven had started to fall he’d been upstairs, blissfully living out his afterlife like most should’ve been able to. If he’d had any sort of brains or self-preservation he’d have stayed there but the minute that rift had opened up his only thought had been of those boys and what they were stuck facing down here. Shaking his head, he let out the breath, hating to hear it shudder more than it should’ve done. Maybe if he’d gotten to town a little faster, dragged a little more of the truth out of John, they could’ve prevented what had happened but instead if was like they were stuck in a big waiting game now.
The other shoe was going to fall eventually and likely squash them all flat when it did. Wiley old hunters didn’t wait around for that crap to happen, they got proactive. Which was why he’d asked Ben over this afternoon. Pleading for a little help when you were a broken down old hunter who hadn’t exactly come back in better shape than he’d gone, seemed reasonable enough and it let him keep an eye on the kid in a way he hadn’t been able to before.
Hearing the front door open, he looked up from the box. They all had keys by now, a way to get into what he was terming the inner sanctum, if all hell literally broke loose here. ”Back here,” he called out, setting the empty box aside. ”Never thought unpacking would be such a big pain in the ass but I guess a little spring chicken help’ll make it go faster. You grab lunch like I asked you to?” Anything to keep the boy busy at the moment, his brain occupied and distracted from what the hell had happened that night.

Ben had heard about the reputation that Mystic Falls had even before he had headed there during his search for his mother’s killer. He had never planned on sticking around for too long but the rumours that the vampire he was looking for in Mystic Falls hadn’t subsided, it had just taken him longer to find the creature than he had hoped for. With such a high supernatural population Ben had had plenty of cases to keep him busy and he still did even now despite the fact that there were more hunters in town than ever. He had never been one for stepping on people’s toes but he wanted to do his part to keep the town that he had come to think of as his home safe and that included stopping those who were among the supernatural population who just wanted to live normal lives without hurting anyone from getting hurt themselves. To begin with Ben had thought that things were black and white, that there were only humans who were good and supernatural creatures that were bad, but he had quickly come to learn that it wasn’t always like that. There were shades of grey in the world, there were humans who were evil and people who were a part of the supernatural world who were good and Ben wasn’t afraid to stand up for those that other hunters deemed to be evil when they were in fact good people who hadn’t done anything wrong. Even now he still wasn’t entirely sure whether his family held the same view that he did but he knew that his dad and uncle had been trying over the last couple of years that since he had found them at least. Now things between the brothers were worse than ever, however, and Ben couldn’t deny that he hated it. He still didn’t believe a word that Sam had said when Lucifer’s cage was opened and Ben refused to give up on him. Months had passed since the other Special Children had been killed by Sam leaving him the only survivor and since then Ben had been trying to find his uncle and get him to expel Lucifer from his body but to no avail. He had no idea what kind of shape Sam was in right now but he did know that his dad was struggling and Ben couldn’t blame him. Dean and Sam had always had each other’s backs but now they couldn’t be further apart. He had told his dad, Claire and Henrik when they had arrived in Hell that Sam had agreed to be Lucifer’s vessel so that he wouldn’t have to, that he had been doing it to protect him, but so much time had passed since then and his dad and Sam had had a huge fight before that day as well so he had no idea what was going to happen now. Life had gone on, though. His relationship with Claire was going well and they were both in college now but Ben was still hunting during his free time and he was still trying to get to know the extended family that he now had as well. Not only were both of his grandparents alive once more but Bobby had returned to them as well and after everything that he had heard about the man from his dad he was keen to get to know him. He wasn’t against spending time with the older hunter but something about Bobby’s reason for asking him over didn’t quite add up and Ben knew that he wouldn’t be surprised if the guy thought that he needed looking out for. That couldn’t be further from the truth, he had already died and been brought back so dealing with what had happened in Hell was child’s play in comparison. He couldn’t deny that he was worried about the fact that Lucifer was free but he knew that they would all deal with that problem when he showed his face. Having grabbed lunch on the way like he’d been asked to, Ben made his way out to Bobby’s place and didn’t bother knocking before heading inside. As Bobby called out to him, Ben headed through to the room where the voice had come from and felt a laugh escape his lips as the man spoke again. “I’m sure you could probably do this in your sleep if you wanted to. Are you sure you’re not just trying to check up on me?” he asked as he set the bag down on the counter. “I did. Burgers and fries from the Grill like you asked for,” he nodded. “Better eat it now before it gets cold.”BOBBY SINGER

He’d felt old as dirt before Dick Roman had gone ahead and put a bullet in his head. Seen too much, felt too much … lost too much. Bobby knew he could’ve put an end to that by holding onto his peaceful little bit of the afterlife upstairs. Feet up, plenty of peace and quiet. And those boys running constantly through his mind. Sam and Dean had been right there in the forefront of his brain as he’d dived through that rift.
Now they were the ones helping him to feel ancient as he continued to unpack the remnants of the life that’d been rusting back in South Dakota since he’d croaked. Azazel had completed his ritual, almost all of the second batch of kids he’d doctored with his blood had been killed and brought back, and somewhere out there Lucifer was free, riding around in Sam and doing who the Hell knew what. Dean had tumbled down somewhere he hadn’t been able to get at him to smack him back right. John and Mary were … he didn’t know.
Bobby pinched at his nose, scrubbed it over his beard. He wasn’t ready to give up on any of them but he was tired and this was more staggering on than striding forward towards a solution to all of this. At least he had Ben helping him out, a distraction for the kid from what he’d gone through in all of this. Fetching lunch wasn’t exactly the hardest job out there but it was something to do and that was what both of them needed right now.
Pushing the thought of what would happen if they didn’t manage to get Lucifer back in the cage and Sam patched up, Bobby looked up as the front door opened. Coulda been any of them but he was laying money on it being Ben. Blue eyes drifted up from the last book he’d taken out of the box and met Ben’s as he walked into the kitchen. ”You could do it while I slept,” he shot back with a grin. They both knew he’d do it regardless but having help here sure made a difference. ”Still got a good dozen boxes to get unpacked. The delivery guy wasn’t all that pleased about having to bring ‘em around back.” Not with the weight of them. It meant that the one getting paid for it had done most of the heavy lifting though.
Bobby set the book aside as Ben set the bag down on the counter. Sketchy brows rose, the absolute picture of innocence here. The kid was shrewd, he’d give him that. Clucking his tongue, Bobby drifted over to the fridge to grab himself a can of soda. ”Like I’d do anything like that. You’re old enough and ugly enough to watch out for yourself son.” They’d all do it anyway, it was the way family went. Bobby held up the can, wiggled it in offer to Ben as he lifted his chin in the direction of the bag. ”They put the extra pickles on the burger?” he asked. He wasn’t Dean, it wasn’t often he indulged but right now his arteries were the least of the things on his mind. ”You get yourself anything or you just gonna watch me eat?” Bobby grabbed one of the plates from where it was in the drying rack by the sink and set it down on the table. He sank into a chair with a faint groan.

Ben hadn’t hesitated in agreeing to help Bobby when he had asked for it but that didn’t mean that he was stupid. He knew that the guy was probably using it as an excuse to check up on him the same way that he had been doing with Sam and Dean for years before he died but the truth was that Ben didn’t really mind too much. He was so used to looking after himself and had been ever since his mom died that now and then it was good to be reminded of the fact that there were other people that he could count on. He hadn’t thought that moving to Mystic Falls would change his life that much when he had followed the lead on the vampire that had killed his mom to the small town in Virginia but the truth was that his life had changed completely. Not only had he managed to find and kill the vampire responsible for taking his mom from him but he had also found his dad and the rest of his family and he had been reunited with a lot of old friends as well. Even though Ben had died saving Brooke and he had come close to doing so again along with all of the other Special Children when Azazel decided to use them to open the cage and free Lucifer a lot of good had come from his time in the town and he refused to let the bad things cloud all of the good. He had found a balance between school and hunting which meant that he had the best of both worlds right now and even though he still had no idea where his uncle was or what Lucifer was using him to do he refused to give up on him. Having grabbed the food from the Grill on the way, Ben had headed out to Bobby’s just like he had promised that he would. He wasn’t sure whether his dad or anyone else would end up showing up or not but the truth was that he didn’t really mind if they didn’t. Bobby had taken a little getting used to at first but it had become clear to Ben quite quickly that the guy’s heart was in the right place and being around him really was like being around any other member of the family so he knew that he wasn’t going to pass up the chance to hopefully learn a few things from him while he was there. Ben had learned a lot about hunting over the years but he knew that he still had a lot more to learn and he was still trying to get his powers under control too so he hoped that he might be able to pick up a thing or two while he was there. “Not a chance,” Ben grinned as Bobby said that he could always do the work while Bobby slept. “I bet but at least it makes it easier for us,” he admitted as he set the bag of food down on the counter in front of him. “I have to break it to you but you’re not fooling anyone, I know you still look out for my dad and Sam too,” Ben chuckled before laughing as Bobby offered him a can of soda. “Sure,” he said as he began pulling the containers of food out of the bag. “You really think I’d show up here without the extra pickles? I’ll have you know I value my life,” he teased as he opened one of the containers and checked it before holding it out to Bobby. “Of course I got some for myself. This one is yours,” he said as he handed it over. BOBBY SINGER

When John had first started dropping the boys off at the junkyard it had been to keep them out of trouble. Kids and the job didn’t mix in anything but bloody ways. They’d both wanted to help, wanted to hunt, although Sam definitely grew out of that far more than Dean. Keeping the pair out of them had been a full time job, one that had left him wanting to tear his hair out at times but when John had stormed out that last time he’d almost missed having the pair of them around. Trouble had found them again, or maybe it’d been the other way around, had continued to come to the point where now it just felt like a vicious cycle. He hoped to hell he couldn’t see it coming again, with Ben instead this time, but if he was being honest with himself Bobby knew that they’d already been swept up into that cycle the minute the boys had decided to set foot in this town. Hell, maybe even before. He sill didn’t know what deal Azazel had made with Lisa but Ben had been fed with the yellow eyed demon’s blood as a baby, same way Sam had. Thanks to his uncle in part, probably the only sane thing Sam had managed to do down in that damn pit. The rest of it still boggled his mind to think of … Sam killing those kids, twisted up enough by the demons to think that the deal he’d made with Azazel was going to keep them safe. All it had done was open the door up and let Lucifer out … right into Sam. He couldn’t blame Ben for wanting to help out of that but Bobby knew that the last thing Dean was gonna want was for his son to be neck deep in it again. That meant keeping the teen out of trouble the same way he’d once done his uncle and dad.
The difference seemed to be that Ben knew exactly what was going on. He’d seen the make work in the call to bring lunch over and to help unpack. Bobby knew he could play the doddery old man routine up as much as he wanted, it wasn’t gonna get past the kid. It didn’t stop him trying as he suggested he take a nap while Ben unpacked though. Bobby grumbled under his breath, giving the peak of his cap a yank down towards his eyes. ”Damn kids not taking pity on their elders,” he muttered, his blue eyes carrying no venom as those rose under the brink and fixed on Ben. His mouth twitched under the cover of his beard. ”A touch easier for us. Coulda done with him taking a couple upstairs but I figure that’s what I got you here for and if not you, I’m sure I could drag your dad around to do something productive.” His grin faded at the thought. Sam letting Lucifer free seemed to have cracked something inside of Dean again. It was nothing they couldn’t patch up but even just a metaphorical band aid took time to have things healing again. Bobby grumbled under his breath again as he offered Ben a can of soda. ”You’re far more sensible than your dad or Sam ever were though,” he countered, setting his can down on the table as he grabbed himself a plate. He tilted his head as he took the container from Ben. ”If you took a little more after your dad you might. I swear anything shiny distracts him at times.” The quips weren’t serious, but if they ever needed to lighten the mood it was these days. ”You manage to pick anything up over the last couple of days?” Bobby glanced up as he picked the burger out of the container and set it carefully on the plate. They both knew he didn’t mean extra pickles or a six pack of beer by his comment. News of Sam, some tiny thread they could start following back to the source. That was what they needed badly.

Ben had known that Sam had had a plan when it came to Lucifer. He had made it clear that he didn’t intend on letting Ben become the archangel’s vessel the way that he had done years before and Ben knew that Sam had only been trying to protect him but he had hoped that that would have meant stopping the cage from being opened in the first place. The last thing he had wanted was for his uncle to hand himself over to Lucifer and say yes to becoming his vessel so that he wouldn’t have to and Ben now had no choice but to live with that guilt. There were times when he wasn’t even sure what to say to his dad because he knew that he was the reason why his brother was missing but Ben refused to give up hope in finding Sam and getting rid of Lucifer once and for all. His dad and Sam had managed to trap him in the cage once so Ben knew that he just had to believe that they would figure out a way to do it again. Things were different this time, they had the whole family around them and then some but Dean had been distancing himself from all of them ever since Sam said yes while they were down in Hell and Ben would be lying if he said that that didn’t scare him. He wasn’t too good at opening up about what was going on either, something that he knew now that he got from his dad, but this was completely different. It was like Dean had given up and that was something that he had never thought that the guy would do. No matter where he went he had heard stories from other hunters about the two brothers that had gone to Hell and back for each other, the ones that would never let anything come between them, but now it seemed like it finally had and now Ben couldn’t help but feel like it was his job to bring them back together. He had already had Henrik bring back Mary and John had somehow come back too, as had Bobby. Between them all as well as Claire, Alex and all the others in town that he trusted he knew that he had to believe that they would figure something out sooner or later. Spending the day with Bobby trying to help him get his place up together probably wasn’t the best use of his time but he had asked and Ben had known that he couldn’t say no. The guy was family and Ben knew that he wasn’t going to turn his back on him no matter how menial a task it might seem. He got the impression that there was more to it than that anyway, something told him that Bobby had asked him for help so that he could keep an eye on him and Ben wasn’t too sure what to make of that just yet. He had grown used to his dad and uncle looking out for him but he wasn’t so used to it when it came to others so he knew that it would take some getting used to. “You can’t call me over here and then expect me to do all the work,” Ben shrugged. “You might be old but you’re not useless,” he added, a teasing note in his voice as he looked over at the other hunter. He knew that Bobby was more than capable of doing things on his own but he had asked for help and Ben knew that he was going to give it. “Good luck with that, he doesn’t seem to want to do much of anything these days,” Ben sighed. He really didn’t know how to get through to his dad right now and he wasn’t sure whether the rest of the family did either but he knew that they had to keep trying. “I guess I have my mom to thank for that,” he said, still a little saddened by the thought of what had happened to her. He had managed to kill the vampire responsible for taking her from him in the end but he still missed her and he knew that he always would. Opening his can, Ben lifted it to his lips and took a sip before setting it down in front of him and dishing his own food out onto a second plate. “A few whispers from hunters I met on the road but nothing concrete yet. Henrik has been trying to do a locator spell but Lucifer seems to have found a way to block it for now so he’s trying to find another way,” he explained as he took a bite of his burger. “How about you?”BOBBY SINGER

There weren’t many ways to burn off the mad that didn’t end up just destroying something else inside of ya. Booze burned your liver out eventually and poisoned that well of hurt inside of you further, things didn’t do nothing but temporarily blanket your mind, it didn’t take away any of that was there beneath, Dean’s second go to method, women, only left you with more hurt feelings. You could try beating it out of yourself bit by bit, bloodying your fists and everybody around you but all that did was steal what fight you did have left. By now they should all have been experts at this but Bobby was pretty damn sure that they hadn’t held out any longer against any of this than they had before. Maybe Sam had caved even easier, knowing what they had to lose now. He had to have had Ben and Dean on his mind when he’d gone and signed that damn deal. Always falling on their swords for one another. Bobby knew he couldn’t talk, he’d been ready to do the same for those boys a time or two. When the opportunity had arisen he hadn’t been able to rest back on his laurels though. For all he’d known then both of them were out of the game, living lives that didn’t involve monsters trying to kill them on a weekly basis. The rational part of his brain knew that was a crock of crap, those two boys were never gonna stop fighting these days, just as incapable of it as he’d been himself, but there’d been that tiny kernel of belief that maybe he’d get down here and find that a miracle had occurred. Hell might’ve said that it had, Lucifer was free after all, but for the rest of them this was misery and until they had a way of getting Sam back the only things they could do was keep looking for a way and making sure that mad didn’t hollow them out entirely before they did it.
Helping an old man put his new place to rights wasn’t exactly a genius piece of planning but it’d gotten Ben here all the same. The kid had his dad’s guts and his uncle’s smarts, well the parts of them that didn’t involve handing himself over to the damn King of Hell. Having him here wasn’t gonna multiply the number of books he had to go through but it did multiple the number of eyes trying to pick out the one minute thing that might help … and he was young enough to do the heavy lifting. Bobby tried to look a little feeble as he played the doddery old man but Ben was having none of it. ”Who says I can’t?” Bobby asked, still dead pan on it. He growled at Ben before he snorted. ”Useless, you can bet your ass I’m not, but I am over three times you age so your young back can handle all the heavy liftin’ at least.” If any of them had any luck dragging Dean out of the hole he’d put himself in he’d have gotten him to do the same, ignoring the heavier bitching out of him as he was forced to endure a hang over of what he imagined would be epic proportions. ”Just gotta find the right sort of shiny to pull his head out of his ass right now,” Bobby muttered darkly. They weren’t gonna manage this without Dean. Bobby’s expression softened slightly at Ben’s mention of his mom. ”Your mom was a good woman,” he said softly, thinking of his own. Clearing his throat, Bobby prompted Ben to start dishing up the food he’d brought. Greying brows beetled as he peeled back the top of the burger and checked it before taking a bite. ”Nothin’ that fancy.” Bobby hooked a thumb towards the living room where a stack of books he’d unpacked himself stood. ”Word has it that Rowena was the one behind getting ol’ yellow eyes out in the first place. I’m goin’ after her. If she can get him out in the first place then maybe she can put him and Lucifer back in the cage. They can spend an eternity together.” Chances on that were slim but they’d dealt with slimmer before.

While Ben was growing up the only family he’d had around him was his mom. He hadn’t known who his dad was and even when Dean was living with them his mom had been adamant that the two of them didn’t share the same blood so he had never really known what it was like to have others around him. His friends had become his family but after losing his mom none of them had been able to take him in so instead he had run away and become a hunter so that he could get vengeance for his mom. It had taken him years to catch up with the vampire that had killed her and he knew that he probably wasn’t anything like the boy she had raised any longer but he’d had to grow up pretty quickly after losing her and even though there were things that he regretted now like the fact that he had missed out on so much time at school and he’d moved around so much that was just the way that things had needed to be back then. He had known that he couldn’t stay in one place for too long without drawing too much attention to himself and he’d done whatever he’d had to in order to survive. He had stolen from people and he’d run scams just so that he could have enough money to eat, keep a roof over his head and keep on the move. It wasn’t ideal in any sense of the word but he’d made do until he had made his way to Mystic Falls. It was only when he got there that things had started to change for the better, he’d found Dean again and finally learned that the man truly was his father after all and from there things had started to fall into place. He had killed the vampire that was responsible for taking his mom from him and he had found that it was possible to have a normal life and hunt at the same time. That balance wasn’t easy to maintain but he was doing his best and he knew that it was what he needed. He had been focused on hunting for such a long time that he had forgotten what it was like to be a teenager and if something good had come from the day he died while bailing Brooke out on her hunt it was that he had learned not to take anything for granted. Naturally he also had to balance trying to find a way to free Sam from Lucifer’s influence but the truth was that right now he was drawing a blank. Every time he thought he might be on to something it just ended up being nothing more than a dead end but he knew that he wasn’t going to give up. It had taken him a long time to find his family and now that he had more in his life than ever before he knew that he wasn’t ready to lose any of them just yet. Helping Bobby sort out his new place wasn’t exactly what Ben had thought that he would end up doing that day but if he was honest he was glad for any kind of distraction at the moment to keep the thoughts of what had happened in Hell that day. He had come so close to dying a second time and at the hands of his uncle no less and that wasn’t easy to deal with but he was doing his best to be strong for everyone else and he knew that in time it would get easier, it had to. An amused smile worked its way across Ben’s face at Bobby’s response and he laughed as Bobby said that he was over three times his age. “You got that right,” he teased. “Don’t worry, I’ve got this.” It would have been good if he could have dragged his dad along to help but Ben knew that he wasn’t in the right headspace right now so he was going to have to make do on his own. “Got any ideas?” he asked. Bobby had known his dad a lot longer than Ben had so he was genuinely curious to see if there was anything he could think of that might work. As Bobby said that his mom was a good woman, a fond smile worked its way across Ben’s face and he nodded. “She was. I was angry with her for a long time after I found out that she’d lied to me and dad but I know she did it for the right reasons,” he admitted. She hadn’t wanted his dad to feel like he had to stay with them because there wasn’t a doubt in Ben’s mind that he would have done that if he’d known. It had taken him a while to figure that out but he knew now that she had been right to keep it to herself and at least she had told him in the end. Dishing up the food he’d brought with him, Ben ate a couple of fries before tucking into his burger. “If she really was the one who brought him back then she must have had a reason. I doubt she’ll help us willingly,” Ben admitted as he took a sip of his drink. He had never met Rowena but from what he had heard about her she did very little unless there was something in it for her and right now he wasn’t sure what they could offer her that would interest her enough to get her to help them. Starting over at his age would’ve been unimaginable for most. Upping sticks, moving lock, stock and barrel across country. Some would’ve called it foolish but then the idea that he had given him an eternity in blissful ignorance in Heaven would’ve had most wondering if he’d lost his damned mind. Maybe. Bobby had questioned himself over it a thousand times on his way here to track down the boys. Knowing what he had, seeing what he had since he’d gotten here, he’d never have been able to stay up there, twiddling his thumbs for at eternity. It wasn’t him, hadn’t been since he’d had to kill his own wife. If he’d known this was going on and he’d remained up there, he wouldn’t have been himself anymore, some part of the man who’d fought tooth and nail for those who mattered, for the rest of the world that didn’t, gone. When the chance had come he’d headed for the light, the man still inside of him, battered and bruised, maybe, but recognising that thin sliver of light for what it was. Another chance. Second, third, eighteenth, it didn’t matter. Maybe once they had Sam back, he’d look back on this and feel like he’d taken the only path through all of this.
For now it felt a little like they were stranded on the high road, stuck on that precipice they’d balanced on a thousand times before. There might’ve been more of them preparing to fight this time around but it was the biggest fight they’d likely ever seen. Damn, he was already tired from it but he managed a snort at Ben’s sass. ”I swear sometimes you open your mouth and I hear your dad,” he admitted. Dean had been just the same, and he’d treated him the same way he did Ben now. ”Just consider yourself lucky that I didn’t have ‘em ship the safe room here a bit at a time.” He’d rebuilt it here instead, down in the basement, days of work going into etching the runes into the metal cell that he knew could contain Sam, at least for a while. Cutting blue eyes sideways at the kid, Bobby sighed and shook his head. ”None that’ve worked yet. He’s not gonna be back til he’s sure he ain’t gonna find anything out there to help.” At this point it almost felt certain but none of them were quitters. Not even Lisa.
Bobby swallowed hard as he brought her up, knowing she had to still been a soft spot for the kid. Lisa had lied to him for years to keep him safe, had let Dean go back to a life she’d known was dangerous to keep herself and her son safe and in the end she’d practically sacrificed herself for her boy. It didn’t make it any easier though. His throat aching faintly, Bobby reached out, clapped a hand down lightly on Ben’s shoulder. ”She did it to keep you safe, you can’t have asked more of any parent than that.” There were some parents out there, the ones that didn’t deserve the title, that wouldn’t have tried at all. His own father amongst them. And Rowena too. A scowl creased his brow at the thought of the witch. He’d not met her himself but he’d heard enough to have a sour taste filling his mouth as he swallowed his bite of burger. Bobby went back for another, chewing industriously to try and wipe it away. ”She won’t help us at all without force,” he muttered. ”You don’t do somethin’ like that without a lot of power in your veins and a reason caught up in a lot of hate. If we want to bend her arm we need to know why and how she got him loose. Have you head from Crowley?” There was a thin thread of disgust in his voice as he mentioned Hell’s former King. Crowley had crawled off somewhere when Azazel had emerged, never to be seen again. Damn coward.

Ben knew that he’d had to grow up too quickly. He was barely a teenager when his mom died and he had known that there was no way that he was going to become just another face in the foster care system. He hadn’t had any family that he could go to live with and none of his friends’ parents had been able to give him a place to stay for the long term either so instead of sticking around and letting his life be taken out of his own hands he’d ended up running away. He had started learning as much as he could about the supernatural world after that and he had been determined to find the vampire that was responsible for killing his mom. He had met a lot of other hunters along the way and they’d helped him train and learn more about the supernatural world but for the most part he had travelled the country on his own. It wasn’t easy, he’d had to do things he wasn’t proud of in order to gain money so that he could keep moving and so that he could eat and some of the places that he’d stayed in over the years were ones that he would much rather forget. By the time he got to Mystic Falls staying in the motel had seemed like a fancy hotel in comparison to some of the places that he’d stayed in before but even that was only meant to be a temporary thing. He had thought that he would find the vampire, kill him and then move on but he had ended up finding more than his mom’s killer in Mystic Falls, he had found his family. His dad had ended up joining him on that hunt and he’d had his uncle with him since then as well. Ben had decided to stick around after that and he’d made some friends who were like family to him now as well and all of a sudden he had gone from a kid who didn’t have anyone to one who had a lot of people in his corner. Now one of those people was missing and Ben couldn’t help but feel like it was his fault. Sam had warned him about what had happened the last time that Lucifer was around and he had said that he hadn’t wanted Ben to go through what he had. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind that his uncle had agreed to become Lucifer’s vessel in order to save him from having to do it and Ben couldn’t help but wonder if things might have worked out differently if he’d offered himself up instead. Now his dad had lost his brother and Ben wasn’t sure how they were going to get him back but he knew that they had to try. “I guess I take after him more than I realised,” Ben chuckled. He knew that there were some things that he’d inherited from his dad but there were others that he had never noticed quite so much. “If you’d done that then I would have been out of here straight away,” he shrugged. He didn’t mind helping Bobby with most things but he drew the line at doing something like that. As Bobby spoke again, a sigh escaped Ben’s lips. “I’m sure he’ll figure that out soon enough. With everything going on around here I think if we’re going to find any answers then it will be right here in Mystic Falls,” he admitted. There were so many people who were aware of the supernatural world in the town and Ben knew that one of them had to know something that could help them. As talk turned to his mom, Ben knew that Bobby was right but that didn’t make it any easier. “I know she did but I’m tired of the people I love making sacrifices for me. Mom died trying to protect me, dad made a deal to bring me back when I died and Sam handed himself over to Lucifer to become his vessel so that I wouldn’t have to,” he breathed as he looked away, hastily blinking away the tears that had formed in his eyes. “If they’d just let me go then Sam might still be here.” He knew the lengths that people went to for family but it seemed like every time things seemed to be falling into place in his life something happened to derail that and Ben always seemed to lose someone that he loved. It was taking a toll on him more than he had let himself believe but he knew that he couldn’t afford to be weak and break down now, he had to stay strong and find a way to help his uncle. As Bobby asked if he’d heard from Crowley, Ben shook his head. “I haven’t but I’ve asked Henrik to reach out to him and see what he can find out. He’s the only person I know who can get in touch with him.”BOBBY SINGER

They hadn’t known Ben was Dean’s that first time around. Looking at the kid now Bobby wondered how they’d all missed it. Ben might’ve looked more like his mom when he was younger but there was a distinct look of Dean about him now and the attitude … that innate inclination towards sacrificing himself to protect others, that was Winchester through and through. And that, Bobby thought grimly, as they sat at the kitchen table in a house that wasn’t anything much like his own back in Sioux Falls, was what had damned the kid in the first place. Heaven and Hell had started putting pieces of all of this in place long before Mary had been manipulated into letting that yellow eyed thing in Sam’s nursery, and they’d continued to yank strings since. Some came along, acted like they were helping them all avoid it for a while but in the end those strings snapped tight again.
Blood will out.
Unfortunately in both Sam and Ben it had.
Bobby chuckled wearily, rubbing a hand over his face as he studied Ben. DNA, blood, fate, all wrapped up in a kid who hadn’t really had much chance to be one in well over a decade. A shame but like his dad and uncle, he continued to fight it all. ”Lucky for you, it’s a good thing,” Bobby muttered, knowing that wasn’t gonna be much reassurance. Ben would try and take after his dad and help bring an end to all of this but it was a hell of a lot to put on a kid. ”Hey, if I could put the whole thing together in a weekend then you coulda given me a couple of hours.” It was a hollow observation though. If he needed to he woulda worked his knuckles to the bone to make it happen. What he had cobbled together hadn’t been enough and Lucifer had gotten his hands on Sam in the end, leaving the rest of them chasing their tails here in town. The kid’s sharp observation had Bobby’s shoulders slumping, his body sliding down a couple of inches further in the chair. ”Gotta admit that’s part of what’s worryin’ me,” Bobby admitted. ”What’s keepin’ everythin’ here?” It wasn’t just Lucifer’s presence in the area, something else had been drawing people here long before that. What it was he wasn’t sure he wanted to know.
Ben had already gone through enough, had lost enough to people doing their best to protect him. Dean had left them to do that the first time, getting Castiel to remove their memories of him to make sure that nobody would come looking for them or him through them. Bobby kept his hand on Ben’s shoulder, his mouth pressing into a thin line in the surrounding scruff of his beard. ”It’s what people who love you do. It’s what Winchesters do. You can be tired of it all you want but at the end of the day they’ll keep doin’ it for you, just as I know you’d do it for them in a heartbeat.” Bobby’s lips thinned further, his appetite for the burger fading slightly as he shook his head. ”There’s no guarantee of what and you can’t be tyin’ yourself up thinkin’ there was. The trouble Sam’s in started before you were even a twinkle in your daddy’s eye. Sam was tied of it, he did what he did to try and stop it all as much as he did to try and protect you son.” There was no way Sam would ever have stepped back to let the same thing happen to Ben and Azazel had known it. Hell had them all pegged, Crowley included. The only difference was that the former King was on their side this time around. ”Not the only one, but close ‘nough,” Bobby mumbled. It was better than risking a summoning. ”If anybody can grub around and find somethin’ out, it’d be him.” There was something about trying to save your own hide that made sure you always had one ear to the ground.

Ben was doing his best to hold it all together but the truth was that right now he was at a loss for what to do. He and so many other teenagers had been used as pawns in Azazel’s plan to free Lucifer from his cage and now Sam was the one who was paying the price. Ben knew that he couldn’t give up on his uncle, Sam had handed himself over to Lucifer to save him and that wasn’t something that Ben took lightly. He knew that his uncle had gone about it completely the wrong way, Sam had been the one to kill all of the others and he had almost killed Ben as well so the truth was he had no idea what he was going to do when he saw Sam again but he knew that he needed to do his best to track him down for his dad’s sake. The two of them had been through so much together and for a long time they’d only had each other. That had changed now because they had more people around who had their backs but they still needed each other and that wasn’t something that Ben could ignore. Right now his dad was a mess and the only way to change that was by getting Sam back so Ben knew that that was exactly what they had to do. As Bobby said it was a good thing that he sounded like his dad, Ben felt a wry smile form on his face. “Are you sure about that?” he teased. The more time he spent with his dad the more he was able to see just how alike they were sometimes but Ben knew that he took after his mom as well. He wasn’t sure what she would have made of the life that he had chosen for himself but he liked to think that she would have been proud of the fact that he was doing what he could in order to help people at least. It wasn’t always easy and he knew that there were some people who didn’t like the fact that he was willing to protect supernaturals just as much as he was humans but he had seen for himself that there could be innocents on both sides and Ben knew that they all deserved to be protected just as much. “Alright, that’s fair,” he nodded. “I’ll do whatever you need me to do.” He knew that Bobby was using this as an excuse to check up on him but he knew that that was just what family did. Ben had been on his own for such a long time and he was still getting used to that but it was a good feeling to have family around to say the least. As Bobby asked what was keeping everything in Mystic Falls, Ben’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “That’s the million dollar question. It has been like this for years but so far I haven’t managed to find a reason for it,” he explained. “They’re not all bad though, there are a lot of supernaturals here who just want to live their lives,” he added, hoping that Bobby would understand. He had been trying to convince his dad and uncle of that since he had reunited with them as well but it was something that he honestly believed. “Maybe you’re right,” Ben agreed as Bobby said that everything that his family had done was what people who love you do. He hadn’t wanted any of it but he knew that without all of them he wouldn’t be here and he knew that he owed it to them to live his life. “Sam told me a bit about what happened before, he hated what went down with Lucifer the first time around,” he admitted. They’d had a heart to heart before any of this happened and Sam had filled him in on a lot of it. There were a lot of regrets there on his uncle’s part and probably on his dad’s as well but getting his uncle to open up was a lot easier than getting his dad to do the same. “Have you come up with any ideas about how we can get him back?” he asked, not sure if Bobby had had any ideas even if it was just a long shot. “I’ll reach out to Henrik again and see how he got on. Crowley and Henrik are family, if he’s going to talk to anyone it’ll be him.”BOBBY SINGER

The Winchester boys had a rough start in life, there wasn’t any denying that. Dean’s first couple of years might’ve been peaceful thanks to Mary walking away from her family but long before she’d even struck the deal with the yellow eyed son of a gun something had marked the entire family. Heaven and hell catching them up in the middle of their little war and never letting them free. Despite it all they’d both grown into good men. Bobby snorted lightly at Ben’s wry question. In most people’s eyes the apple not falling far from that tree wouldn’t have been a good thing, a kid tarred with a brush nobody wanted near them. There was something softer than usual in Bobby’s blue eyes as he shrugged at the kid. ”Pretty damn, there are plenty worse you coulda taken after.” Including himself, he’d let the scars his own pop had put on him cut deep enough to scar the life he’d had before the supernatural had reared its ugly head.
Now ugly was almost all they had, the life that’d been before fading like an old sepia photo, creased and soft around the edges while everything else was stark and fresh, almost lurid. Bobby gave Ben a nudge under the table with his boot, letting the kid know he appreciated it. The wry smile tugged at his mouth, blue eyes narrowing faintly. ”I’ll make sure t’find ya somethin’.” Even if it was just busy work, something to keep them all occupied before Lucifer inevitably made his reappearance to tear everything apart. No matter what threat they posed to him he wouldn’t be able to help but come taunt them all. A cat playing with the mice, knowing full well they’d turn on it on masse if they got the chance.
There were plenty to turn on them here in Mystic Falls too. The place was a melting pot of the things they’d usually be hunting without a cosmic sized threat hanging over their heads. Bobby felt every one of his years as the hard spindles of the back of the chair pressed through his flannel shirt and seemingly into his bones. He made a sound low in his throat, his fingers shifting restlessly against the table’s edge. ”Not all of ‘em but some.” Wearily he let out a long breath. ”I woulda said the original family was some sorta draw but it goes deeper than that. ‘s a question for another time though, ‘less it starts connecting the dots with this. You got any connections in town t’ask?” His own were at a distance, those who knew he’d high tailed it out of heaven still small and doing their best but … they’d been on their own with this since he’d got back, holed up in a town that felt like it was about to become ground zero.
Trying to push back his appetite Bobby reached for a handful of fries as he dropped his hand away from Ben’s shoulder. Spending all their time running this through until they ran themselves into the ground wasn’t the way to do it. He let out a long breath, eyeing Ben from under the brim of his cap before he nodded and ate a fry. ”It just ‘bout broke him. Your dad too. Without Cas, I don’t think either one of ‘em woulda made it.” They had Castiel now, they had Ben, they had resources in the town they never could’ve imagined before but when it came down to it Sam was gonna have to be the one fighting this the hardest. A wry huff snorted through Bobby’s nose. He knuckled back the brim of his cap, jerking his chin up towards the living room where he’d been working. ”Some fer if we can actually get him here. Catching him’s gonna be the hardest part. If Henrik can get a hold of the snake maybe he’ll have some ideas for that. I’ve got some things set up already. How’s your enochian?” Bobby looked at Ben shrewdly as he picked his burger up.
