Sam Winchester:
Sam was pretty certain that they couldn't protect him nor save him, for starters he didn't want to be saved. After all the terrible things he had done recently he didn't want to be saved. The hunter didn't want to survive Lucifer again. He wanted it all to end;Lucifer, Hell's reign, himself. He didn't want to go back to being human and weak as it meant Ben would be in the firing line. "Nobody can save me. Lucifer wants my soul and will stop at nothing. He wants to wear me to the prom and scramble my brains beyond the point of fixing. You and everybody else doesn't get it being an archangel's vessel is a death sentence itself but being Lucifer's is worse. I got away and he wants pay back for that. I locked him away and escaped he isn't going to give me a bouquet of flowers and greet me with open arms. He will leave me as a pile of unrecognisable goo only when the fun stops." Sam didn't want Dean to try to fix him or save him and endanger himself as well. It was best to just let fate Aline and be done with it. Dean had his whole life ahead of him with Ben and Sam tangled with Lucifer would ruin the chance he had now. Sam wouldn't stand in the way of that. Sam knew some angels had helped, Cas being one of them, but look how that ended up. Cas had left part of him in the cage and hadn't exactly helped when he removed the wall just to get his own way. Any angel holding a grudge could do that again, any angel on Lucifer's side could bring all the suppressed memories flooding back just to get him to say yes to stop it. The hunter didn't want to go back there ever again. He was doing everything in his power to stop Ben from ending up the same way. Dean deserved some normalcy and happiness and he couldn't give it to his brother but he could stop it getting worse. He could stop Hell taking Ben too. The hunter couldn't help but chuckle. "Close is closer than you think. Hell has gone under every radar for too long. Lucifer is going to get free. You don't understand Lucifer has a hand on my soul and I can feel it tightening. The cage is weakening and Hell is winning. Give it a week and Lucifer will walk the Earth unless I stop Azazel." Sam couldn't explain it but he could feel the pressure building and he didn't know how he knew but he knew that Hell was close to victory. He could practically feel Lucifer just out of reach but there just behind a veil. That veil wouldn't hold for long and he knew it. The stronger he got the closer Lucifer felt and that may have been down to the time scale escalating or it may actually be Lucifer himself reaching out to his true connection to Earth. All the hunter knew what he both liked the feeling and feared it just as much. Sam didn't want to fight alongside Heaven. They only stabbed him in the back, it was Dean they were truly after, Sam was just a pawn to discard when he was no longer necessary. If it hadn't been for Dean and Cas, Sam would already be six feet under and he knew it. Of course Sam knew something. He knew a lot of somethings that Heaven obviously didn't know. How were they still so clueless and blind? "He's been talking to a bunch of special kids. All different ages this time, all from different generations. He planned it this time so you couldn't spot a pattern like last time. You'll never be able to track them all down he made sure of it." He shrugged. Azazel had thought of it all this time around. "Let me.. walk out of here..and I'll tell you ever- everything I know."Sam tried to bargain for his freedom but he had a back up plan. He tried to laugh but the oxygen was starting to get thinner. Sam let himself go floppy as he was lowered to the floor. He could hear the angel turning around so he took his opportunity. Sam still had the knife in his hand at the ready. He rolled over quickly and stabbed the angel in the calf muscle before dragging the blade upwards as he stood up and away from the angel removing the knife as he hit the patella. Sam had made sure his back was to the door so he could escape if the angel tried a second attack.

Madness wasn’t exactly a common affliction up in Heaven but Remiel was pretty sure he could tell the ravings of a mad man when he heard them. The Winchester brothers had gone through more than almost any other human walking the earth and at first, it might have seemed as though they had somehow remained sane through it all but listening to Sam rave now about being beyond help Remiel knew that perhaps Sam was further gone than any of them chose to believe. He listened, grim faced, trying to look for the insanity in Sam’s eye. Maybe the thought of being turned into Lucifer’s vessel yet again had been too much for his fragile human mind to cope with. It didn’t mean he was beyond help, as he believed, it just meant that convincing him to seek out his family and find a way to prevent what was bound to happen was going to be all the harder.
Lips pressed together, hands remaining hovering in the air as though he could coax Sam down with mere gestures alone, the angel shook his head at the hunter. It hurt his heart to hear Sam talk of retribution and Lucifer’s ‘joy’ at seeing him again should he get free. ”No, you’re right, we have no idea on what it’s like to allow him in,” he agreed. ”You did get free of him once though Sam, it’s why I believe we can do it again. You just have to believe.” And after all he had been through, that was obviously the hardest thing. Each time they had fought, each time they had saved humanity, literally, they had crept a little closer to the abyss. The wrong move at any time and it could be their last fight. Time and time again he had lobbied to Heaven about being allowed to be a part of the fight but until the fall had decimated their forces, he had never been allowed down here like this.
He certainly wouldn’t have been given free rein to destroy a nest of demons if his strings were still being pulled upstairs. Sneaking in to the warehouse tonight Remiel had hoped that this would be a minor blow to Azazel’s forces at least but now … He looked around, his expression growing weary as his gaze settled on the vessels left empty and broken by their former inhabitants and both him and the man before him. ”This isn’t the way to stop him, Sam,” Remiel said, the tone of his voice flattening. ”You cannot lose yourself to do it.” There was no point in saying again that they would find another way, Sam had stopped listening to him. At this point it was just wasted breath and the fight between them was inevitable.
Somehow he needed to stop Sam from harming himself but not before the hunter elaborated on just what had pushed him to this step too far. Azazel had been a menace in town, his demons flooding to the area in a way that had left him certain that war was inevitable now. If it hadn’t been for the Winchesters’ presence here he might have put out the alarm call to those left under heaven’s control, one last desperate howl of the bugle to stop an apocalypse. Remiel’s brow furrowed, his breathing coming short for a moment. ”A second batch of special children? How could he?” With planning and forethought, obviously. The yellow eyed demon had not been back long enough to have hade them after his return. This had been one of his plans all along. If Sam was being honest now then they had no hope of getting to all of the children first. Filled with horror Remiel kept his grip on Sam, desperately trying to stop him just long enough. If he could get him to his brother then surely they would have a chance.
Remiel felt guilt settle in the pit of his stomach as Sam finally went lax in his grip. He knew Sam would see this as a betrayal but it was what he thought was best. Slowly, he let Sam began to slide to the floor. ”I’m sorry it came to this Sam,” he said hoarsely. ”I couldn’t let you walk away from here and doom yourself.” Maybe if he’d been a little more ruthless he would have see the hunter’s attack coming. Lulled by his past interactions with the hunter Remiel had merely stood there over his body. He didn’t know what he was seeing as Sam flipped himself over, only feeling the agonizing bite of pain rip through his meatsuit as the blade bite into his leg. Remiel went down to one knee, Gabriel screaming in his head. Fingers clutched at the wound, holding the tattered pieces of flesh together as he stared at Sam in horror. ”I was helping you,” he gasped. ”Why would you…” Because he’d tried to keep Sam from his plan. Not himself, the hunter no longer cared of the damage he was doing.

Sam Winchester:
Oh, Heaven really had no idea of the damage already caused. Sam may have escaped Lucifer once but it wasn't like he had a say in the matter. The seconds he managed to control his body over Lucifer was due to Dean and that bridge was burnt now. The hunter had only managed to escape Hell with the help of Castiel and that was also a long shot now. It wasn't as if that worked the first time either, Sam had returned soulless and caused more damage than before. This would be no different and this time he knew that. The first time he had taken on Lucifer he had been in denial about how much the devil would take from him, this time he knew he wasn't strong enough to stop him, not without Dean by his side. The hunter knew he had blown that when he almost killed his brother. All the other times he or Dean had almost killed each other they could put it down to a ghost or demon or some sort of spell but this was all him and he accepted that. He'd seen the look in Dean's eyes that night and knew all their history was over. He couldn't help but laugh. "You really have no idea do you? I didn't get free from him due to choice. It was luck mixed with opportunity and a 1000-1 chance. I got lucky!" Having faith and believing in a higher power hadn't served him at all in the past so he wasn't about to start now. what did the angel know about stopping his brother? Sam had been the only person to help and yet also stop Lucifer and in doing so had an eternal target on his back that he knew he would never be able to shake. The human was certain that he had already lost himself in the cemetery when Azazel was first killed and even more so when he was dragged from the cage. Sam was never going to be the cute innocent human who tried to save everyone, he wasn't in denial anymore. Oh they really had no idea. They were completely in the dark. Sam knew all hope was gone when Heaven had no idea what Azazel was planning. Sam knew more than Heaven and that was not a good thing. " Same way he did the first lots... demon blood." Sam gasped for breath but none came. "I've killed plenty but there's more.... He is twenty steps ahead of you... and you had no idea."The hunter waited patiently for the opportune moment. That was why Heaven was bound to loose; they didn't expect people to turn. They didn't understand human or demon nature. "That's exactly what you are going to do." He stood up slowly and rubbed his neck. "You will let me walk out of here." He coughed as the lack of oxygen had started to get to him. "I'm not dooming myself. I'm saving everyone else." As the angel protested Sam shook his head. "You were the one dooming me! They imprisoned me before and I wont go back there. I'm on my own." He backed towards the exit. "So are you." He started to make his way towards the exit limping slightly as his lungs started to struggle to gain the proper amount of air.

Luck. Such a human notion but one that Remiel had come to believe in over the centuries. Angels may have called it serendipity or just fate, fickle and inescapable no matter how hard you fought. As much as he had always believed in his father, Remiel couldn’t resign himself to believe that every moment of misery was planned on for the humans they had been tasked with looking over. People were capable of raising themselves up, of fighting, of failing, of making their own mistakes. The Winchesters may have been guilty of all of those things but it wasn’t because they were fated to be that way. No more than his own host had been ‘fated’ to die at the hands of a vampire or become the host to an angel. It was random, it was luck. Although his host may certainly have argued with the latter these days.
Remiel felt the strain radiating from Sam as the hunter laughed. Fate had been tossed at the Winchesters numerous times and each time it had landed they had just seemed to find themselves mired deeper in that sticky spot between Heaven and Hell. The angel didn’t want to think of where his own involvement had gotten both of the Winchesters. Remiel half dropped a hand, a finger pointing at Sam as blue eyes bored into the hunter. ”I don’t but you said it yourself Sam, a thousand to one. Not impossible odds, especially not for a Winchester.” Almost insurmountable though. It was no wonder Sam was trying to juice himself up. It was a mistake in his book, going to his family, fighting this together would’ve seemed more sensible to him but as Sam kept saying, he really didn’t haven an idea did he. Most of the angels who were left were absolutely clueless, surviving themselves through luck alone. With each day the numbers dwindled, the size of the forces that could go up against Hell shrinking to the point of being almost ineffective.
They might well shrink by another today if he wasn’t careful here. Sam had gotten the upper hand on him here, the gravity of the situation not becoming apparent until it was too late and he’d already been forced to try and take the hunter down for his own good. Remiel swallowed hard, shaking his head. Like everybody else Heaven had ended up focused on the first batch of children, never imagining that Azazel had built himself in a failsafe. ”Deals with the demon. How did Crowley not learn of this?” he asked, baffled for a moment. Because the Yellow Eyed Demon had been an expert at hiding what was going on from all of them. Twisting them all around until they were doing what he wanted instead of what they needed to do to stop him. ”We still have a chance,” Remiel breathed. ”Together we can stop it all, no matter how far ahead they are.” Distracted, Remiel frowned at the thought, his mind drifting to those in charge of Heaven now. He needed to get Sam to his family, he needed to tell them all what was about to happen.
Fool. The word bolted through Remiel’s head even as he heard Gabriel screaming out his agony in his mind. He had allowed Sam to lull him into a false sense of security. With demon blood in his veins and a hunter’s experience at his fingertips Sam had remained twenty steps ahead of him too. The blade that bit into his leg took him down. Remiel tried to rise but the leg gave out again, spilling him to the ground again. Sam hadn’t just dealt him a flesh would he could heal instantly. He had known what he was doing. ”Sam, stop!” Remiel roared through gritted teeth. ”Surely you can see this is what they want you to do. Azazel is playing on your love for your family, he wants you to do this. Please…” Sucking in a breath through his nose, Remiel got himself up on one knee. ”Your family are the only ones you can help now. Sam…” The hunter was almost at the exit though. Willing every ounce of strength into his torn leg Remiel wobbled his way to his feet, starting after the hunter. His hand was already going for the blade he had used on the demons, he hadn’t want to do this but he would if he had to.

Sam Winchester:
Sam shook his head and laughed hoarsely again. Nobody understood him, how could they? Sam had ruined his chances of his family standing by his side against Lucifer. All they had wanted to do was save him and Sam thought that impossible, especially after the things he had done recently. "Yeah it was a thousand to one. I was pulled out by Castiel and my soul was returned by Death. I stayed strong for Dean but I've blown it with him too." He wanted the angel to see that he was too far gone and there was one bit of information that would make even Heaven believe that he was gone. He didn't want to remember the moment but he had to, it was one of the things that kept him sane and to stay human. "I almost killed him. Dean said I fed Ben demon blood and I lost it. Dean ended up blue and similar to me now. I had the urge to kill. I realised it was Dean and stopped but only just." It only went on from there. "My whole family then locked me up and tried to dry me out and kill me in the process. Trying to save me will only kill me. I'm past the point of no return now. I accept this, everyone else needs to as well."The hunter coughed as he took a deep breath. "How could he? His predecessor made deals, which others fulfilled. Azazel had kept it under the radar until now." Sam knew they still had a chance but he was the only chance or so he thought. He knew he would have more of a chance if his family stood by his mission, that would never happen. The hunter had spent a long time with Castiel to know what was a flesh wound for an angel and what took time to heal. Of course it was what Azazel wanted him to do but it was also the way to stop Hell. He had to make sure he didn't go that extra step, the last thing he wanted to do was help Hell instead of stopping it. It was a fine line but Sam had to walk it alone. "If it comes down to Ben or myself I know which I will pick, every time." Sam turned his back to the angel. He knew he didn't have long before the angel realised if he healed the leg and used his wings he could catch up with him. He wished they hadn't been three floors up. The wayward hunter turned his back and ran for the stairs. All he had to do was keep ahead of Remiel and keep going. He could relax when he was back in the abandoned house.
