Matt still wasn’t any closer to figuring out what had happened to him during the week that he had gone missing but it was clear to him that something had changed. He had killed the creature that had attacked him and Damon in the woods and even though he would be the first to admit that he and Ty had played a lot of video games while they were growing up he knew that wielding a sword in real life was completely different. Then he had been going on instinct alone and the truth was that scared him. He had never thought that he would ever be capable of killing something else, even something that had been trying to kill him, but he had almost taken Damon’s head off as well after he had danced around what had really happened to Vicki. Matt hated the guy but he knew that his friends would never forgive him if he killed the monster responsible for getting his sister killed so he knew that he had to keep a level head. Ever since his surprise disappearance he had been keeping his distance from his friends but he was slowly trying to change that. For a long time he hadn’t known who to trust but Bonnie had reached out to him and since then he had talked to Stefan as well so he knew that he needed to put things right with the others as well. It was going to take time but now the nightmares had subsided at least and even though Matt still felt different he was finally starting to feel more comfortable in his own skin. He knew that he needed answers and he was determined to get them but first he knew that he needed to understand what had been done to him and what it meant. Lately he had been busy working at the Grill, keeping on top of his homework and trying to keep up with football practice but that day he had set aside some time so that he could get some practice in. Now that his eyes had been opened to what was really going on in Mystic Falls he knew that he needed to be ready to defend himself when the time came and that was why he had found a secluded area in the woods around Mystic Falls that day to do some training. He had hardly been able to look at the katana since he killed the creature but now he knew that he needed to get over that once and for all and he was determined to do just that. It was with that in mind that he started to practice, using the tree before him as a target as he tried to get used to the weight and feeling of the katana in his hands. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Life in Mystic Falls might not have been as idyllic as most would believe it was on the surface but it was one that Olivia had found suited her. Like the village in Canada, it had that strange mix of the human and the supernatural, not quite the same given that most humans here were oddly unaware of what was going on around them, but a mix the same. It meant that strolling down the street she didn’t feel like the cuckoo in the nest, just waiting for one of those passing her to realise what she was and turn on her in the way hunters had. People who were unaware of what was all around them were terrified of the unknown. They didn’t see someone trying to help, someone who had given everything to defend others. They saw something monstrous, something capable of wielding electricity or lightning or opening the ground up beneath their feet. Strolling through the streets towards the woods on what had become part of her weekly routine, Olivia smiled at those passing and knew that here there were those who would defend her, trusting her not fearing her. Her gaze ticked up to Henrik and Elijah’s apartment as she passed, her mouth curving further. There were those here who loved her and in the last few months that had become more important than anything. Mystic Falls, with all of its faults, had become home.
She could’ve fallen into a routine here and neglected keeping her abilities in shape, but Olivia knew that it would’ve been foolish to allow herself to do that. Yes, she was happy here, yes, she had a life here, but Mystic Falls wasn’t entirely idyllic, people died here, some in horrendous ways, some were lost, never found. She couldn’t sit on her laurels when that happened and so these weekly walks out to the woods happened, sometimes with Henrik at her side, her fingers laced with his as they made their way out into those woods, returning later in the morning to open up the bar, other times alone. This morning it was the latter. Olivia dragged her gaze away from the window, heading further through town at a stroll, eventually making her way off of the surface streets and out into the first smattering of trees. This part of Mystic Falls was just like the village, like the ground where George had first taught her to take control of her power. Chances were there were others out here today, taking in the morning sun like herself, but there was enough space for her to slip out of sight, to feel the earth tremble beneath her fingers.
Olivia could almost feel it shiver as the picked her way over the leaf mulch and deeper into the woods. She didn’t believe that the ground recognized her earth kitsune power so to speak but there was certainly an affinity there that she’d learned to fall back on. Almost at the small clearing she’d been using to practice since she’d arrived in town Olivia paused. Birds were taking off from nearby, their calls loud, raucous as they disappeared into the distance. Something had startled them, she turned, ears and eyes straining until they caught the clatter of a sword. Brown eyes still narrowed, not an ounce of fear rising, Olivia started in that direction. She saw the flash of the blade before she caught sight of the boy, it’s profile familiar enough to tug at something in her gut. ”They’re pretty durable but still, they’re better being used against something other than a tree,” she told him softly. Olivia came out from the shadow of a large oak, her hands held aloft in the universal symbol of surrender, her own blade obvious in her left hand. ”It’s Matt, right? I’ve seen you around the Grill a time or two. I’m Olivia.” He was too young to have spent time at Campbell’s but in the year she’d been here she’d found her way around the rest of the town, had gotten to know enough faces to find them familiar.

Matt’s eyes had only recently been opened to the supernatural after Damon found him in the woods but the truth was that he was starting to wonder just who else in town was involved in that world. He knew that the Salvatore brothers were as were Elena and Bonnie and he suspected that Ric was as well but other than that he wasn’t sure. He knew now that all of the attacks that had been happening around the town over the last couple of years weren’t random animal attacks, Vicki had tried telling him that she had been attacked by a vampire but he hadn’t believed her and now he knew that he had to make sure he was a lot more open minded about things like that. There was no telling who or what might be in Mystic Falls now and Matt knew that he needed to stay on his guard. He had already been attacked by one creature out in the woods and he had no idea what that had been but it had been clear to him that it was no longer human and it had been a case of kill or be killed so he hadn’t had any choice in the matter. He knew that he didn’t want to find himself backed into a corner like that again with only his instincts to rely on so he knew that he needed to train but he also knew that he needed to try and get an idea of who was involved in that world. For now he had settled for training and he knew that that was probably a good idea. He knew that he somehow had natural skill with a sword despite never having picked one up before that day but he knew that he needed to figure out how to wield it properly rather than relying on his body to know what to do when in his mind he had no idea. He had been lucky enough once but he knew that he couldn’t count on that same thing happening again. He had also come close to taking Damon’s head off when the guy had decided to dance around what had happened to Vicki and Matt knew that he needed to get himself under control before he did something that he might end up regretting later. Deep down he knew that killing Damon probably wouldn’t be a bad thing, after all he was the reason that Vicki was dead, but wanting revenge wasn’t Matt’s style and he knew that Elena would probably never forgive him for hurting Damon, nor would Stefan, and no matter how angry he might have been at the two of them for keeping him in the dark they were still his friends and he knew that he didn’t want to lose those friendships. Those were just some of the motives that had had him heading out to the woods that day and he soon found himself getting lost in his practice until a voice sounded nearby making him jump and causing a jolt of electricity to leave the fingers of his free hand and hit a nearby tree. Staring down at his hand for a moment, Matt had no idea how that had even happened but he it was yet another thing that he needed to figure out. “I’m just trying to get the hang of using it so a tree seemed like the safest opponent,” he explained. He hadn’t felt ready to reach out to one of his friends and ask them to train with him yet so this was the next best thing as far as he was concerned. “Yeah, I’m Matt. It’s nice to meet you,” he said sincerely. Anyone else might have thought that seeing a teenager out in the woods training with a sword was a little strange but Olivia seemed to be taking it in her stride for the moment and that alone was enough to make him curious as to why. “So what brings you out here?” he asked, hoping to avoid any awkward questions that might be aimed in his direction for a moment. Having been on the other side of all of this Olivia knew exactly what it was like when you were trying to come to term with the fact that you were no longer entirely human. You had powers and not enough knowledge of them to figure out what the hell you could do. On the night that she’d created a wall of earth to protect her team from the bomb that had been whistling towards them she’d almost convinced herself that she’d had nothing to do with what had happened. There was no way on earth that anybody could’ve made the earth bubble up that way. The rational explanation had been that some other explosive had gone off just a split second before, somehow preventing the bomb from reaching them but the chances of that had been so small that it had been hard to even justify the thought of them when George had turned up at her mother’s door just days later. He’d made it clear that most grew up with the knowledge of what they were from birth but in her case God only knew what her birth had been like. Maybe the kid swinging the sword around in the woods now had been dealt the same kinda crappy hand or just maybe he was growing up in a family of kitsunes as George had and was out here trying to stretch his wings with these new powers that were popping and fizzing under his skin.
Reminded of those early practices with George she’d spoken softly to him as she’d approached. She hadn’t intended to startle him, had even brought her own blade into sight to try and reassure him that they were kindred spirits but the jolt of electricity that shot out of his fingertips in a way that would’ve made Emperor Palpatine happy made it obvious that she’d done just that anyway. ”Sorry,” Olivia murmured, shooting him an apologetic smile as she let her blade swing smoothly lower. It sat lightly down the length of her leg, its pommel smooth in her palm. ”Sounds like a wise move to me. It won’t be hurt by what you’re doing and gives you a pretty big target to aim at.” George had furnished dummies for the two of them instead, old uniforms that couldn’t be repaired anymore even in their frugal times stuffed full of grass, propped up in the field for her to spar around. It had felt absolutely ridiculous at first but as she’d grown used to the sword in her hands it had felt almost like second nature to swing at those vaguely human forms. She’d rarely used her sword on flesh and if she had her way Olivia knew she never would again.
Unless trouble came to call of course. In Mystic Falls that was all too likely. Below the normal human surface of the town there was always some sort of darkness bubbling away. For most the knowledge of that would’ve been enough to send them running for the state line but the fact that there were others who had another side to themselves here was what had drawn her to the town in the first place. Her smile rose at the corners as he confirmed she had the name right. ”You too. I guess you’re my competition in a way. I own Campbell’s.” That hadn’t stopped her from heading the Grill like everybody else in town though. Everybody deserved a little time off after all. Tilting her head slightly, Olivia brought her own sword up into view again. ”The same as you,” she told him honestly. ”A little practice keeps certain skills sharp. Is this the first time you’ve come out here to try that out?” It was of course a polite way of trying to find out just who he was with regards to that side of things. Was he one in a long line of kitsunes in the same way Sophie was or was Matt here just like herself?

For a while now Matt had been burying his head in the sand, trying to come to terms with everything that had happened while still hiding from the truth about what had been done to him. He knew that something in him had changed but he had no idea what it was. All he knew was that he felt different, stronger and faster than he ever had before which wasn’t a bad thing but strange things had been happening around him as well. Electricity seemed to be going haywire on occasion, bulbs around the house had blown the moment that he turned them on and a few times he had thought that he had accidentally shocked those around him. He wished that he understood what was happening to him but one thing he knew for sure was that he was at least able to protect himself now and for that he was grateful. Ever since he had woken up in the woods with a katana that he could mask as a belt whenever he was around everyone else he had felt like he could do just about anything. He had managed to kill the creature that had attacked him and Damon even though he had never wielded such a weapon before but what he didn’t understand was how that had happened. He knew that it wasn’t possible to become a fighter overnight but that seemed to be exactly what had happened and he knew that he needed to get his new abilities under control so that he could start trusting himself around others once more. “It’s fine,” Matt assured her, more worried about the electricity that had shot from his fingertips than anything else right now. “You aren’t freaked out by it?” he asked, certain that she must have seen what had happened if the look on her face when she’d approached was anything to go by. As she spoke again, he glanced back at the tree he had been using for target practice only a few moments before and he nodded. “The size of the target doesn’t matter to me, I just didn’t want to hurt anyone,” he admitted. He had finally come to terms with the fact that he had killed the creature out in the woods when he and Damon were attacked and he was working on getting his anger under control as well. The last time he had let his emotions get the better of him he had almost taken Damon’s head off and that was something that he knew that he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself for despite all of the awful things that the vampire had done. “I had no idea you owned your own bar,” he admitted. He had seen Olivia around the Grill from time to time so he had recognised her straight away but he hadn’t known anything more about her than that. As she asked again, he nodded. “Yeah, it is. I needed some time to think,” he shrugged. “How about you, do you come out here to practice often?”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Fear could drive you to amazing things. Electricity had never shot from her own fingertips, although that might have come in handy a time or two when it came to protecting herself, and others, but she’d felt power surge through her own veins along with that sudden and overwhelming jolt of adrenalin. The woods they were standing in now weren’t anything like the flat field the gun emplacement had occupied but it was close enough that she could all too easily remember the way she’d felt her heart clench as she’d seen a plane headed straight for them. Rooted to the ground with fear, her eyes filling with tears, Olivia had thrown her arms up then and had stumbled back, startled when the ground in front of her had followed suit. It had been absolute, raw power then, an instinct that had thrown dirt hundreds of feet in the air, obscuring their position, shielding them from the bomb that had been dropped to kill them. Afterwards the memory had softened, her brain trying to rationalize the whole thing by coming up with a scenario where a bomb had exploded right there, breaking the earth open and taking out the very pilot who’d dropped it. George’s appearance on her mum’s doorstep after he’d tracked her down had clarified it all in a way that left her stomach and heart feeling like pinatas. She’d thrown the earth up on that night and had saved lives. She’d become a kitsune, or rather, that side of her had finally emerged after two years of living a perfectly normal life.
Most kitsunes didn’t get to go through that moment of shocking discovery. It was something that came down in families, they had parents or siblings around to explain. They weren’t blindsided the way she had been … the way she suspected the boy might’ve been. There was a chance he was just out here practicing, away from family who already had this down perfectly, but Olivia had a gut feeling that it wasn’t the case. She smiled softly, shaking her head at him as he asked if she’d been freaked out. ”I wasn’t,” Olivia assured him. ”It’s not the first time I’ve seen something I couldn’t entirely explain.” Nearly a century of life and she was used to that feeling by now. Staring at the tree he’d been attacking, Olivia let her fingers trail along the pommel of her sword. ”I just meant it gives you more to aim for to practice,” she told him. Empathy had her looking back to his blue eyes. ”Is that why you’re out here doing this? You want to learn what you’re doing before something happens?” She hadn’t been all that different. Despite his attempt to kill them first, she’d still felt awful that George had been forced to kill the pilot to protect her. Thanks to him she’d lived, his shielding of her happening again at his last. Thinking of her husband, there was a tinge of sadness to Olivia’s smile as she nodded at Matt. ”I guess with you not being old enough to drink, it hasn’t really popped up on your radar. It’s a safe place … for people like us.” Supernaturals and humans alike. Olivia shifted her sword, letting the segments of it fold into one another for a moment. ”As often as I can. I’ve had plenty of practice but when I was being taught I was told to never stop. You never know when you’re going to need it all. Is that what your talent is?” She nodded to his fingertips, indicating what he’d been able to do before. Each type of kitsune had its own skill, its own abilities and hers had always been an affinity with the earth.

Ever since Damon had found him in the woods after he’d been missing for a week Matt had known that there was something different about him. All of the compulsion that had been placed on him over the last few years had been washed away and now he remembered everything that had once been lost to him. Not only that but he seemed to have become a master swordsman overnight even though he had never picked one up before and he seemed to have stronger instincts than ever before. The truth was he had no idea what was going on right now but he knew that he needed to figure it out. He perhaps should have reached out to his friends and asked them for help but given that they had kept the truth about the supernatural from him for such a long time he simply didn’t feel ready just yet. He wasn’t looking forward to the way they were all going to look at him when they figured out that something was different about him although he wouldn’t be surprised if Damon had already told them about that. He had been keeping his distance from the people he cared about somewhat lately as he was still worried that he might hurt them but he knew that he couldn’t stay away from them forever, nor did he want to. His mom and Vicki were gone and his dad had never been in the picture given that he had fled Mystic Falls before Matt was even born. He didn’t have any family in town who were related to him by blood these days but he did still have his friends and the truth was they had been family to him more than his own ever had been. Vicki had stuck around more than their mom had but she had still inherited the same flighty instincts and self-destructive behaviour that had made his mom infamous in Mystic Falls. He knew that he was nothing like his mom or sister and he didn’t want to be either so he knew that he shouldn’t be shutting himself off as much as he was but letting the people he cared about get close to him was proving to be easier said than done after he had come so close to losing control with Damon. Matt knew that he needed to learn how to control himself more before he could truly trust himself around his friends and he also needed to learn to understand his new abilities a little more. He might not know what had happened to him just yet but something had changed and he knew that he needed to get a better grasp on exactly what that was. Testing his new abilities in the woods had seemed like the safest option since at least while he was out there he could make sure that he didn’t hurt anyone but he hadn’t thought that anyone would find him out there either so he couldn’t deny that he was a little wary to say the least. “I guess you know about all of this too then?” he asked, not sure why he was still surprised that there seemed to be so many people in Mystic Falls who knew about the supernatural world. It was the only explanation that made sense as to why Olivia wasn’t freaked out by what she had seen so he had a feeling that he was right in his presumption. “Something already has happened and I want to avoid it happening again,” Matt admitted, lowering his gaze as he spoke. He knew that his actions of killing the creature that had attacked him and Damon were justified but that didn’t make him feel any better about taking a life. He had also come so close to killing Damon and he knew that he needed to learn how to control his new abilities if he was going to make sure that he didn’t hurt anyone. “People like us?” Matt repeated, not sure what Olivia meant by that. She clearly knew what he was now but the truth was that he still had no idea so he wasn’t sure what she meant by that. “Given what Mystic Falls is like now we’ll probably both need it sooner rather than later,” he admitted. The town never used to be like this, at least not to his knowledge, but now he wouldn’t be surprised if the supernatural population of Mystic Falls outweighed the human one so he knew that it was better to be prepared. Looking down at his fingers as she asked if that was what his talent was, a confused expression worked its way across Matt’s face as he lifted his gaze to look at her. “I have no idea. That has never happened before.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

It was easy to put the truth of a matter out of your head when you’d barely survived an attack that would’ve left little more than a pink mist made of your body behind. The shock set in at the narrow escape and you were more concerned with getting the hell out of there and making sure your friends were OK than you were with how in the hell you’d managed to raise a wall of dirt a hundred feet high. The questions had been there when she’d paused to think too hard about their narrow escape but Olivia hadn’t allowed herself to believe the truth until George was there to tell it to her. He was her font of all knowledge on what she was, using his knowledge to unleash the power that was inside of her, following his teachings up until even now. Without him Olivia was pretty sure she would’ve remained lost. The genie would’ve been out of the bottle, freed by what had happened at the gun emplacement but she wouldn’t have had a clue what it was or how to cram it back in. it would’ve been horrible, as she imagined it was for the boy in front of her now. She didn’t have a clue yet how he came to realise what he was or get his hands on the sword but from the little she was getting out of him she imagined that it wasn’t from somebody like him and it hadn’t come with weeks of lessons or explanations. Empathy welled up in her stomach as she studied him. He hadn’t been lucky in the same way he was, at least, perhaps not until now. If there was something she could do to help him out so he got a little more of it then she’d be happy to do it. A guide to someone who’d once been guided in the same way, it was what George would’ve wanted.
It was strange to think of herself as the font of all knowledge now. Perhaps she was a little rusty but she could assure Matt that she knew what they were surrounded by in this town at the very least. One corner of her mouth kicked up in a crooked smile as she nodded her head. ”I do,” she said softly. ”I wasn’t much older than you were when I started to find out about it. I had no clue before then.” Whoever had left her on Florence’s doorstep had obviously wanted to keep what she was secret, at least for a time. They must have known that eventually the power would emerge. She was lucky that when it had it had been in a way meant to protect, not an accident the way that it seemed to have hit Matt. ”Did you hurt anybody?” Olivia asked softly. She wouldn’t condemn him if it had, you couldn’t be held to blame when you had absolutely no idea you were capable of something. Olivia lifted her chin slightly, settling her hand on the pommel of her own sword. ”I guess you haven’t heard the word before,” she said lightly. ”We’re kitsunes. There are various kinds, I’m not sure which you are, but I’m an earth kitsune.” The sword and ability to use it were common to them all so she had no clue yet what Matt was capable of. Shifting lightly, Olivia crossed to the base of the tree and settled herself back against one of the low hanging branches. ”We may well do. Things happen here that none of us could possibly predict, sometimes they’re tragic.” Often they were bloody. She met his eyes as he looked back up at her. ”Has anything else strange happened? Any other things you’ve never managed to do before?” Like bursting light bulbs or managing to raise the very earth beneath their feet.

Matt still didn’t know what had happened to him the week that he was gone but he knew that something in him had changed and he needed to learn how to control it. He had lost his temper while he was with Damon and in doing so he had almost ended up decapitating the vampire. Deep down he knew that the guy would have deserved it given that he was responsible for killing Vicki but something told him that his friends wouldn’t forgive him for it. He didn’t know everything that Damon had done during his time in Mystic Falls so far but he had done his homework and he knew a few things that he was pretty sure that the guy was responsible for. Lately there hadn’t been as many incidents so he wasn’t sure whether he was trying to be a better person or not but it was clear to Matt that his friends cared about him, or at the very least tolerated him for Stefan’s sake, and Matt knew that he didn’t want to put his friend through the kind of hurt that he had experienced when he had learned that Vicki was dead so he had been doing his best to keep his distance and keep his anger under control to make sure that he didn’t end up doing something that he would only end up regretting later on. He knew that it might make him feel better for a little while but Matt knew himself well enough to know that it wouldn’t be too long before the guilt set in and that was something that he didn’t need any more of at the moment. He still felt bad enough about killing the creature that had attacked them in the woods but like it or not he was a part of the supernatural world now and he knew that he needed to find a way to protect himself from it. All of the compulsion that had been used on him over the last few years had broken away and he remembered everything, including all of the things that he would much rather forget, so he knew that he needed to be ready for whatever was going to come his way next. Taking to the woods to train was the only thing that he could think of to do and it made him feel better knowing that he had the time to get this under control. He had come close to losing it once and he had almost hurt Damon so he knew that he couldn’t risk that happening a second time. He hadn’t for one moment thought that anyone would end up finding him while he was out there practicing but the woman seemed to be taking it in her stride completely and that was something that surprised Matt. “You went through this as well?” Matt asked incredulously. He didn’t know whether Olivia was in exactly the same position that he was but it was a relief to know that someone at least partially knew what he was going through right now. As she asked if he’d hurt somebody, Matt’s face fell. “Something attacked when I was out here with someone else. It wasn’t human but I killed it,” he explained. It was something that still haunted him now but he was trying to make sure that it didn’t happen again and a part of him wondered if perhaps Olivia might be able to help him with that. “I also almost cut the head off the guy that killed my sister but he would have deserved it,” he added with a shrug, a nervous smile forming on his face as he tried to lighten the mood. One thing Matt definitely didn’t want was to end up hurting anyone else so he knew that this was something that he needed to do. As Olivia said that they were kistunes, his eyes widened in surprise. “Kitsunes?” he asked, testing the word out as he did so. “What are they?” he added, knowing that if he was going to stand a chance at learning to control this then he needed to know exactly what he was up against. As Olivia asked if anything else had happened, Matt’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “A few lights have blown while I’ve been around but I thought it was just dodgy electrics,” he explained. “Until I went missing I was normal, vampires were able to compel me. As a child who’d been dumped on a doorstep Olivia had always known that there could’ve been skeletons in her family closet. She’d obviously been well cared for when Florence had found her. She wasn’t starving, she hadn’t been hurt in anyway, she’d just been abandoned on her doorstep without any indication of who had left her there. Florence had never hidden what had happened from her, when she’d been old enough to ask questions she’d been honest but she’d also made certain that tell her one thing – she was loved. Olivia liked to believe that of whoever it was who had deposited her there but she’d known that Florence had loved her just like one of her own. Olivia supposed that she could’ve tried to dig into all of that after George had told her what she was. There had to have been other kitsunes in England, perhaps even some that George could’ve found if he’d searched had enough for her but she’d told him no then. She had a family who loved her and she had a husband who both loved her regardless of who she was and was willing to teach her everything she needed to know about what she was. Piece by piece he had filled in all of those gaping holes in her life. It wasn’t until he’d been killed that Olivia had found herself hollowed out again. Having her friends here, finding Henrik, they’d both helped her to start filling them in again. This might’ve been the last piece though, being able to do as George had done and fill in the blanks for somebody else who was obviously lost in all of this.
Olivia for a little bashful as she tucked her hair back behind her ears. The only people who’d ever known what she’d done out there that day had been George, Lauren, Nick, Luke and Henrik. She nodded to the kid slowly, amusement pulling a little more at her lips. ”I did. Something happened and at first I wasn’t even sure it was me that had done it. Someone had seen though and he was like us. He tracked me down and told me what was going on. I thought he was crazy at first,” she admitted with a chuckle. Her chuckle faded away as Matt admitted that something had attacked him when he was out here and he’d had to kill it. She shifted on her feet, her gaze skittering around them. ”Then what you did was the right thing. Some things are inherently dangerous, perhaps not evil but certainly dangerous and they need to be stopped before they hurt somebody.” It wasn’t something that she ever liked doing but as she had done when the bomb had been falling towards the gun emplacement, Olivia had always known that she would do anything necessary to save a life. Olivia held back a sigh as Matt admitted that he’d almost used the sword to take off somebody’s head. ”That’s different then,” she said lightly, not wanting to put more stress on him. He really was in the dark about a lot of things Olivia realized as Matt’s eyes widened. ”Kitsunes are fox spirits, traditionally Japanese but we’re all over the world now. Each kind has their own abilities but the sword is common to all and certain things can see an aura around us.” Obviously no werecreature had seen his or at least known what it was. Olivia smiled as she settled on the tree, shaking her head. ”Not dodgy electrics, we have a way with electricity though. To be honest, I don’t know. I was born what I am. As far as I know though vampires can’t compel another supernatural creature. When did you go missing? Was it around here?” Olivia frowned. There was always talk of people going missing around here, some turning up dead. Was Mystic Falls literally turning people into other species?

The nightmares had subsided after the attack in the woods when Matt killed the creature that went after him and Damon but he was still left with more questions than answers. He had no idea who had taken him or why and he also didn’t know what had been done to him. All he knew was that he was suddenly a natural with a sword and the compulsion that had been placed on him over the years had been wiped away. He didn’t even know how that was possible and Damon had seemed surprised by it too but something in Matt had changed during the time he was missing and he knew that he needed to get to the bottom of what had happened. For now at least he was trying to get some semblance of normality back in his life by focusing on school and getting back into the routine of working as much as he could but that day he had some free time on his hands and he knew that he might as well put it to good use. Now he knew what was really going on in Mystic Falls he knew that he needed to be able to protect not just himself but those around him as well and he knew that he couldn’t afford to take any chances so he needed to train. He seemed to have natural instincts that weren’t there before now but he knew that he didn’t want to just rely on them being good enough to save him each time. He needed to hone those skills and figure out what else was going on with him as well and that was why he had headed out to the woods that day. He knew that Ric would have helped him train if he’d asked but the truth was that he was still scared of hurting the people he cared about so he knew that he didn’t want to risk letting any of them help him just yet in case any of them ended up getting hurt. He had come so close to cutting Damon’s head off when he almost lost control and he knew that he didn’t want the same thing to happen while he was around anyone else. He hadn’t thought for a minute that anyone else would end up being out there that day but someone had found him anyway and his first thought was that he needed to be careful but the woman didn’t seem that surprised by what he was doing and that alone was enough to intrigue him. He had seen her around more than a few times over the last year or so but he didn’t know her well enough to know whether she was one of the human residents in Mystic Falls or whether she was one of the supernatural residents. He hadn’t even known about the divide between the two until recently and he was still trying to get his head around it but he knew that there were plenty of things that he couldn’t explain going on in the world so this seemed like just another one of those things. “It looks like history is repeating itself then because I kinda think you might be crazy,” Matt admitted. Vampires, werewolves, witches and the like were things that made sense in a way but this seemed completely different and he wasn’t sure how to explain it right now. Olivia seemed to know much more about it than he did, though, so he knew that he needed to hear her out and learn as much from her as he could because he hadn’t come across anyone else that knew what he could be so far and he knew better than to push away the one person who might be able to help. “I think a part of me knows that deep down but I still don’t like that I killed something,” he shrugged. It had haunted him for quite some time but now he knew that it was time for him to put the past behind him and learn from it and he wanted to do just that. The word Olivia used for what the two of them apparently were wasn’t one that Matt had ever come across before and that concerned him. His friends knew a lot about the supernatural and even though he had been keeping a distance from them to make sure that he didn’t hurt any of them he knew that if any of them had known what he had become then they would have reached out to him and let him know but that hadn’t happened. “It felt like instinct kicking in but I held it back, I just don’t want to lose control like that around anyone again.” It hadn’t been easy but he had managed it and he was glad that he had done. “What kind of ability do you have?” he asked, unable to deny that he really was interested now. “I’m guessing that mine has something to do with electricity.” Olivia had said that they had a way with electricity but this seemed like something more than that and he knew that he wanted to figure it out so he could find a way to use it. There was so much about this that he didn’t know and he wanted to learn as much as he could. Matt frowned as Olivia said that she didn’t know whether it was possible for someone to be turned into a kitsune and he shook his head as she said that as far as she knew vampires couldn’t compel another supernatural. “Normal vampires can’t but I was compelled before I was taken and the compulsion broke when I woke up out here after I went missing,” he explained. It still didn’t make a lot of sense to him but he was slowly trying to put the pieces together. “It was just before the start of the new school year so about seven months ago. I was on my way home from a friend’s but I don’t remember getting home and the next thing I remember I woke up somewhere out here a week later and I had this sword with me.”OLIVIA CAMPBELL

After that night in the field, as she’d watched the world around her suddenly erupt with dirt, it had been easy to convince herself that it had been one of the planes that had caused the ground to explode the way it had. The German bomb falling too early, gunfire from the plane that had roared overhead behind it. Looking back, Olivia knew she’d been absolutely blind. Moment by moment she could’ve picked out what had gone through her head, that desperation to protect the team she’d grown so close to, that suddenly tingle beneath her skin and the roar in her throat as she’d thrown her arms up to cover her face. Now she knew how her power had affected the very ground beneath them but then it had just seemed like a blessing. It wasn’t until weeks later that she’d sat on the rickety chair in their small kitchen, numb fingers curled in her lap as George had told her incredible things. If the door hadn’t already been shut against the interested glances of her sisters, she would’ve begged him to close it then. It had sounded insane. Ancient fox spirits, people who could control the lightning in the skies and the earth beneath their feet, George reaching up to dim the shaded bulb that hung from the ceiling. They’d always listened to their mum reading fairytales when they were small but even they hadn’t been able to compare to all of that. In the end it had been George she’d trusted in, not the craziness that he’d assured her she was capable of, if he could train her. He’d been her tutor, her friend, the very first love of her life.
Having been there exactly where the boy was now, Olivia hoped she could be the first two for him. He’d always had friends around when she’d seen him but this … this most wouldn’t understand. Even he didn’t right now, his admission that he thought she might be crazy drawing a chuckle from her. ”Maybe I am but I can assure you that when it comes to this I’m about as sane as it’s going to get.” In a world you thought you had strictly organized the idea of being a fox spirit who could operate a katana in an instant and heave rocks the size of Buicks from the earth was hard to fit into one of those neat slots, even if you already had some of the stranger things in the world set in place already. Her smile settled as she looked back at Matt, a sad edge to it. ”None of us ever do, the fact that it bothers you means you have a good heart. Listening to it will help.” Hers had driven her to war, and then to seek peace with George. Still, violence had come to their door eventually. ”You’ll find your control,” Olivia promised softly. ”I’m an Earth kitsune.” Olivia bent, placing a hand against the ground beneath her feet. She kept her gaze on Matt as she let her power filter into the Earth. The ground around both of them shook lightly, a half dozen boulders finding their way to the surface, Matt left standing on a light mound. ”Perhaps, there are thunder kitsunes amongst others.” Elemental, like so many of their kind. She’d thought that they’re all been born to what they were but what Matt was saying seemed to bely that. Getting to her feet, she frowned. ”You were human,” she breathed, the rules of the supernatural meaning he couldn’t have been a kitsune who just hadn’t come into their power then. ”Can I see it?” she asked, extending her hand towards his sword. ”I’ve read about others going missing in town but I never put it together. Has anything come back about what happened to you?” Seven months was a long time to go without knowing what happened to you. Olivia drew in a breath, maybe Henrik knew something of what was going on, or one of his siblings, they’d lived longer than anybody else she’d ever known.

Matt had known that something was different as soon as he woke up in the woods on the outskirts of town and being able to defend himself from the monster that had attacked him and Damon had just confirmed it. He didn’t know what had happened to him or why but one thing Matt knew for sure was that he wouldn’t have been able to fight like that before if his life had depended on it. He had instincts now that he’d never had before and he seemed able to tap into skills that he couldn’t remember acquiring. Damon had tried to compel him but it hadn’t worked, in fact all of the compulsion that had been placed on him before had broken. He didn’t understand how that was even possible but he knew that it meant that he wasn’t human any longer and he would be lying if he said that that didn’t scare him. The nightmares had finally subsided but now he knew that he needed to find a way to control his new abilities so that he wouldn’t have to worry about hurting anyone and he also wanted to train so that he could get stronger. He hated being the one that his friends all felt the need to protect, Matt had grown so used to trying to look out for his friends over the years that he hated that it was now the other way around. He didn’t want to be a liability any longer, he knew that he needed to learn how to look after himself in this new world that he hadn’t even known existed until he was taken. Any memories that he’d had in the past had been taken away from him but now he remembered everything. He remembered what had really happened to Vicki and he remembered a few things that he would perhaps rather forget but at the end of the day he knew that it wasn’t right to take the easy way out by forgetting what had happened, instead he needed to learn from it and that was exactly what he was trying to do now. That was why he had taken to the woods that day so that he could train. He wasn’t sure who the katana belonged to but when he had it with him it felt like the most natural thing in the world. He had found that he could detach the blade and have it serve as a belt so that he could keep it with him at all times and he would be lying if he said that he didn’t feel better knowing that he had a way to protect himself from everything that was out there now. He had never wanted to become a part of this world but his friends had been thrown into it one way or another and he had made a promise to himself a long time ago that he wasn’t going to abandon them for anything so he knew that he needed to stick to that. They had been there for him through everything so he knew that it really was about time that he repaid the favour and if he was going to do that then he knew that he needed to find a way to protect them all as well. He hadn’t thought that anyone would see him while he was out there but there was a look in Olivia’s eyes right now that told him that she knew exactly what was going on right now so she knew a lot more than he did. “I’ll take your word for that,” Matt chuckled, an amused smile working its way across his face as he looked over at Olivia. He still wasn’t sure that he believed what she had told him but it certainly explained a few things so he knew that he had to at least hear her out. “I don’t know about that, I still lost control and nearly hurt someone,” he admitted. He still felt guilty about that now but he knew that he needed to focus on the fact that he had stopped himself in time instead. He hoped that Olivia was right that he would find his control because the truth was that right now he didn’t trust himself to be around the people that he cared about most. He was still angry with them for keeping the truth from him for so long but deep down a part of him understood why they had done it now and he knew that he needed to start leaning on them more but he needed to make sure that he wasn’t going to hurt any of them first. “That’s amazing,” Matt said, looking around in astonishment at everything that Olivia had been able to do with her powers. Something told him that that was just the start and it was enough to make him wonder what he might be able to do with his own one day. “Thunder kitsunes? What are they able to do?” he asked, knowing that there had to be more to it than what he could imagine right now. As Olivia said that he was human, he nodded. “I was,” he said sadly. “Not anymore though apparently.” How that was even possible he had no idea but he knew that he needed to find out. As she asked to see the katana, Matt hesitated for a moment before handing it over. There was something about Olivia that he felt like he could trust and she seemed to know a lot more about this than he did so he knew that he needed to trust her for the time being at least. “Nothing really, no. I get flashes of images sometimes but they feel more like a dream than anything,” he admitted with a shrug. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Stories of ancient fox spirits and people who could live hundreds of years had always been the thing of fairy tales, maybe not even that for her. Her brothers and sisters had bought her hundreds of books to feed her voracious appetite for them as she’d grown up, had encouraged her quick mind and told her she could do anything she wanted to put that mind to. They hadn’t known that she was so much more than it, they hadn’t known anything about the child who’d turned up on their doorstep but they had faith in her anyway. Olivia had carried that inside of herself since, through that first conversation with George that had left her feeling as though maybe she’d left part of her mind at her station when the explosion had blown her clear on her backside. It had felt too much to believe, too much to trust in but there at her kitchen table, her eyes on George’s handsome face, she had trusted. Every moment from then until she’d seen the life go out of her husband’s eyes, she had trusted. George had been confident in who he was and what he could do and he’d taught her to be the same. She could hold her head up and profess to her fellow kitsune that neither one of them was crazy, but Matt wouldn’t trust her, not until he could see all of that for himself. She could see that written all over his young face, that reflection of just how she’d been when she’d been there in his shoes
Olivia returned his chuckle with an empathetic smile. Right now she might not’ve seemed it, although as her story spun out and Matt realised that she wasn’t that different to him, that would change. It all seemed so insane at first. An earnestness came into her expression at his admission that he’d nearly killed somebody. ”You acted on instinct almost the minute you had the sword in your hand. You can’t take that as a roadmap of the way things are always going to be. With training you’ll come to understand what you can do and you’ll trust that you can hold onto your control.” Fear had so much to do with the way people reacted, even if you were a hunter whose life had just been saved by something you didn’t entirely understand. Over the last few months Olivia had come to understand that the man who’d killed her husband hadn’t necessarily been acting out of hatred then, fear might’ve had a lot do with it, even if it didn’t excuse what he had done to George.
Acting as a shoulder to learn on was something that George would’ve tried to do for Matt. Olivia could almost feel him there with her as she spoke of what she could do and reached down to give Matt a demonstration. ”I’ve always thought so,” she admitted with a little amusement. ”When my power first emerged I used it to protect my gun emplacement from a German bomb. You can imagine how shocked I was when I managed to make an entire wall of earth appear in front of us.” Hazel eyes narrowing faintly, Olivia drew in a breath. ”Thunder kitsunes biggest ability is manipulating electricity. Massive amounts of it, they can absorb it, they can generate too, dangerously if they find themselves in the wrong place.” Olivia sighed at the sadness in Matt’s voice as she rose. ”We still are,” she promised. ”You haven’t lost who you are Matt, just changed what you can do.” It was too simple a way of putting it though. Reaching out, Oilvia took Matt’s sword, turning it over in her hands before she stepped back and began sweeping it around herself in a complex set of moves. She made a low humming sound as she held it back out to him. ”What flashes do you remember? People? Things? Smells?” She wasn’t sure it was fair to ask him to draw them to mind but right now she had no idea how he’d been turned into a kitsune.

Matt hadn’t believed Vicki when she had told him that she was attacked by a vampire and he knew that if he had done then perhaps she would still be alive today. For too long Matt had been compelled to forget anything out of the ordinary that had happened but that didn’t work on him anymore. Now all of the compulsion that had been placed on him ever since Stefan and Damon arrived in town had been washed away and he remembered everything that had happened. Matt would be lying if he said that there weren’t some things that he would rather forget and there were times when he missed how much simpler life was when he didn’t know a thing about the supernatural world but whether he liked it or not he was a part of it now. Something had been done to him that had changed what he was and ever since Damon found him in the woods he had been doing his best to keep his new instincts under control. He had already killed the creature that had attacked the two of them, something that he still felt guilty about now, and he had only just stopped himself from cutting Damon’s head off. That wasn’t something that he could let happen so he knew that he needed to learn control but he also needed to learn to understand these new instincts better and that was what had seen him heading out to the woods that day. It had never occurred to him that he might just end up running into someone who not only knew what he had become but was like him herself but Olivia seemed to have answers that Matt had been searching for ever since that day so he knew that he had to learn as much as he could from her while he had the chance. “That’s why I came out here today, I need to learn to control this,” Matt admitted. “I don’t want to hurt anyone and I need to know how to protect myself. Instincts are great but I can’t just rely on those every time, I need to know what I’m doing,” he added. He had acted on instinct last time and he had ended up killing the creature that had attacked them. Matt knew that he didn’t need any more blood on his hands so he had to find a different way and the only chance he had of doing that was to learn more about what he had become and what he could do now so that he could protect not just himself but the people he cared about as well. “I can,” Matt chuckled, knowing how odd that must have been for Olivia. “Were your family like you?” he asked, not sure whether she had grown up around kitsunes or whether she had found out what she was in a similar way to how he had. “That must be what I am now, it’s the only thing that makes sense,” he said thoughtfully as he studied the patterns in the tree he had hit. He knew that they only came about from being struck by lightning so it had to be. “How do I create it?” he asked, knowing that if he was able to do that then it should be that much easier to control it. As Olivia spoke again, Matt felt a small smile form on his face. “Thanks, I think I needed to hear that,” he admitted. He could still recall the fear in Damon’s eyes that day and he knew that he didn’t want anyone else that he knew to feel that way about him. Watching Olivia as she took the sword he had found next to him in the woods that day and did a few difficult moves before handing it back to him, Matt took the sword back and tried to replicate what she had just done. His moves weren’t anywhere near as graceful but the sword truly felt like a part of him and he found himself beginning to trust that a little more. “Not many. It smelled damp and felt like I was in a cave or underground or something. I remember being kept in a cage and another flash of being on a table in what looked like an operating room but that’s it. I woke up near Fell’s Church and I don’t even remember how I got there,” he explained, not sure whether it would make any more sense to Olivia than it did to him right now. OLIVIA CAMPBELL
