She’d balked. When Ralphy’s message had come in at 4am Alix had balked. Lips pressed together almost bloodlessly, her heart jammed hard enough into her throat to leave her feeling sick, she’d refused. Derek’s arm had tightened around her waist as her thumb had hovered over the screen ready to tell her uncle she was done, an anchor holding her back from doing anything stupid. Only Ralphy obviously didn’t have the same definition of stupid as she did. He messaged again an hour later as she’d been laying there wide awake in Derek’s bed in the dark. The thread had been blatant, her dad was making noises about coming to visit. If she wasn’t busy perhaps the family could do just that. It was about time, didn’t she think? Untangling herself from the sheets, from Derek, Alix had sat up on the edge of the bed, stomach churning and bile rushing up the back of her throat even as Derek had stirred and she’d whispered for him to go back to sleep. Rising, she headed for the bathroom, still clutching the phone. Ralphy knew her weak spots, how to get her to cave, so when his next message had come in fifteen minutes later with a location deep in the woods that surrounded Mystic Falls she hadn’t been surprised. A wendigo, two campers already missing. Ralphy had suggested she take company, the wendigo had already killed a couple of hunters in the Carolinas. Not Derek, she wouldn’t bring him into this, not when the Dread Doctors had already taken so many of the weapons he was used to wielding. A scroll through her phone, a consideration of who she could trust, who wouldn’t question what had to be done too closely.
Ben Winchester. Waiting at the turn off in the woods where she’d asked Ben to meet her Alix felt her stomach twisting uncomfortably again. There’d been another hunt out here a while back, one for another wendigo. Anybody else would’ve been better than Ben but she’d had to go invite the kid. The part of her that wanted to shield Ben from what was going on had taken control of her mouth on the phone, telling him she didn’t know what they were dealing with yet, just that she’d narrowed down the area she thought the campers were in and that she needed back-up. That nagging voice in the back of her head got louder as she heard Ben’s vehicle approaching through the woods. She could tell him it was handled and call Derek out here. From the stories she’d wormed out of him he’d dealt with enough creatures in the past to have a clue about things other than werewolves but she didn’t want him anywhere near anything to do with Ralphy. And so, with her stomach twisting, Alix pulled away from her car and made her way towards him. ”Hey, thanks for being able to make it at the last minute.” Huffing out a breath Alix dragged a hand through her now red hair, something she was still getting used to and then gestured back towards the woods. ”I found what looks to be a trail back there. Looks pretty easy to navigate while it’s light. Are you still up for watching my back?” A red brow winged as she asked, giving him the chance to back out now, a tinge of hope in the pit of her stomach that Ben would take her up on it. The last thing she wanted was another innocent life on her conscience.

For the last few months Ben had cut back on the amount of hunts that he had gone on. For four years it was all that he had really known while he had been searching for the vampire that had killed his mother but now that vampire was dead, he had killed the creature after finally catching up with it, and after Ben had lost his own life during a hunt while he was helping Brooke he had known that perhaps it was time to start living life like a normal teenager again for a while. He had continued keeping an eye on all of the supernatural creatures that were calling the town their home and he had been helping Stefan, Scott and the others when he could, he had even stepped in to defend Dec and Laney from a hunter that had wanted to kill them, but otherwise he had let his focus turn to school and his friends for the first time in years. It had taken a while to get used to living in Mystic Falls after moving around every few weeks the way he had done since his mom died but now it felt good to finally have some stability in his life. He had not just a place that he could call home but his dad and uncle back in his life and friends who knew exactly what he had been through so he knew that he couldn’t ask for much more than that. A part of the reason why he had wanted to live a normal life for a while was so that he and Hayden could give things between them a real go but that hadn’t worked out and now he finally felt like he was ready to start balancing the two sides of his life again. Being a hunter was in his blood, it was who he was and he knew that he wasn’t ready to walk away from that just yet. That was why he hadn’t hesitated in agreeing to help Alix when she called. He hadn’t even known that she was in town but she was one of the people who had helped him the most while he was learning more about the supernatural world and how to hunt and he knew that it was the least he could do after everything that she had done for him. A small voice in the back of his mind kept reminding him about what had happened the last time he had backed up another hunter on a job but he knew that he just had to believe that this time things would be different. That was what he kept telling himself at least as he hotwired the car and made his way to the spot that Alix had asked him to meet her in. He had no idea what they were going to be up against and from what he could gather she still hadn’t figured it out either but he knew that together they would get to the bottom of it and with any luck they would stop any more innocent lives from being lost too. Climbing out of his car as it came to a stop, Ben shook his head as she thanked him. “You don’t need to thank me, I keep telling you I’m just a call away if you need help,” he said, his gaze meeting hers as he spoke. “Of course I am, it’s the least I can do,” he assured her before following her gaze to the trail that she was talking about. It seemed familiar and he was pretty sure that the spot where Brooke had been kept wasn’t too far away but he knew better than to let his thoughts go back to that day if he could help it. “Have you had any more luck figuring out what we’re going to be up against?”ALIX QUINN

Hunting tended to run in families. For most it hadn’t run as long in their blood as it had for the Quinns but when it wasn’t some bitter old man pouring tragedy and misery into taking out every supernatural son of a gun possible before he himself was taken out, it tended towards being a family trade. The hunter rumour mill had the Winchesters as relatively new to the game, John Winchester only starting to hunt after his wife had been killed, but his wife herself, now that was a family who’d passed the trade from generation to generation, Mary Campbell possibly ending up the latest generation to take up the salt and silver but marriage had taken her away from it. Her parents had never been proponents of allowing their children to escape their ancestral legacy but Mary Campbell had obviously wanted better for her kids. Back when she’d first met Ben on the road she hadn’t pegged him for being Dean Winchester’s son. By the time he’d come clean she’d already been drawn into a hunt with the kid. She hadn’t been able to help him track down his dad, the Quinns had turned their noses up at Sam and Dean Winchester and even if she’d done a U-turn on that since she’d gone on the run, Alix had known the danger in reaching out to hunters experienced enough to be able to tell what the hell she was. If Ben’s ethics were anything to go by she might’ve had a few minutes to argue against her ending up dead but chances were that she’d have ended up that way anyway. That part of her that’d known what she was doing today despite her reservations absolutely knew that if this went bad she was dead anyway. Dean Winchester wouldn’t hold himself back if a hunter went and got his son killed again.
Those voices had been at war in her head since she’d made the call. Much longer waiting for Ben and she would have paced a furrow into the ground. None of them deserved to be caught up in this, not Derek, although she’d tangled him in it so tight she was sure it would strangle him eventually, and not Ben. Before those voices won out and she headed into the woods without him Ben was pulling in behind her own car. Alix twisted a corner of her mouth up, not managing much more than a wan smile in his direction. ”I do,” she told him honestly. ”I know you were taking a break from all of this. I would’ve pulled someone else in if I could, let you continue doing that, but this was seriously short notice.” With lives at stake she hadn’t been able to reach out to anybody else and so she’d gone with what had felt like the lesser of two evils. Two giant, most definitely deadly evils. Reaching out a hand, Alix clapped it against Ben’s upper arm in gratitude. ”I owe you big time for this,” she promised as she turned to narrow her eyes at the trail that was the easiest way to the cave where Ralphy had assured her the wendigo was hiding out. The lie turned bitter on her tongue, threatening to have her stomach rebelling, before Ben even finished asking his question. She knew, but she also knew that one mention of the word could have Ben shaky enough that he’d be all the more likely to end up dead in that cave. Alix shook her head, stepping back towards her car to grab the bag she’d packed ready to make the kill and fill Ralphy’s pockets again. ”No definite answer on that. All I know is that it got its hands on a couple of campers. I think if we manage to get in there today we might just get them out alive. Whatever it is has been holding the people it takes for a few days before it leaves them dead and moves on.” That was a wendigo’s pattern, to build itself a little larder. What made it successful that way was also its weakness.

Ben had never been the kind of person who let anything get him down for too long but he would be lying if he said that dying while saving Brooke on a hunt hadn’t shaken him to his very core. He had asked his dad not to do anything stupid by making a deal to bring him back the way that Ben knew he was prone to doing for family but he had gone and done that anyway. Ben had worried about the consequences of a deal like that but so far there hadn’t been any and for that he was grateful. His dad had never told him the details of the deal he had made and neither had Henrik but either way Ben was back and he knew that he was where he was meant to be. He had taken a break from hunting after that at Hayden’s request but the life had eventually pulled him back in anyway. Lately he had been taking a break and focusing on his schoolwork more than anything but he still hunted on the side. It was an important year for him at school, it was his senior year and he knew that he wanted to graduate with all of his friends so he knew that he needed to do everything he could to give himself the best chance of doing that. For four years he had travelled without even setting foot in a school but moving to Mystic Falls had changed everything. He had a life, he had friends and he had a place that he could call home. Sure he was still living in the motel for the time being but things were still so much better than he had thought they would be. Sooner or later he knew that he would get back into hunting properly, there wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that, and joining up with Alix seemed like the perfect way of doing that. The two of them had met while they were on the road before he had even learned that Dean was his dad. Back then he had already adopted the surname Winchester because it had felt right to him but he hadn’t known why as his memories had been locked away by Castiel. So much had changed since then and Ben now knew who he was and where he belonged and he felt like he was a much better person for it. He had always been one to keep an open mind and he knew better than to shoot first and ask questions later, in fact one of the first things he had done after he arrived in Mystic Falls was to figure out which members of the supernatural world living in the town were harmless and which ones didn’t care who they hurt. Ben knew that things weren’t always back and white, that there weren’t just humans and monsters, and he wasn’t afraid to step in and protect those who deserved it even if they were a part of the supernatural world themselves. This time he didn’t know exactly what he and Alix were going to be up against but he knew that he would find out soon enough. “It’s fine, I’ve been thinking about getting back into this properly for a while and this seems like the perfect chance,” he admitted. “I never stopped completely but I did cut back,” he added. Hunting was in his blood so he knew that he would never be able to turn his back on it altogether but it had been good to focus on getting his grades up for a while so that he was in a much better position to graduate at the end of the year. “I’ll find the perfect time to call in the favour, don’t worry,” Ben said, offering Alix a smile as she gripped his arm. As Alix explained what they were hunting, Ben’s face turned pale. “A wendigo,” he breathed - the very same creature that he had died saving Brooke from. For a moment his hands began to shake but he took a deep breath and pulled himself together. This wasn’t going to be like last time, of that he was certain. This time he and Alix were going to work together, he wasn’t going to have to go in and save her after she tried taking the creature down alone the way it had gone down with Brooke. “Let’s do this,” he said, his voice sounding much steadier than it had a few moments ago. “Have you been tracking its movements?” he asked, knowing it would be good to know whether the creature was in its den at the moment or out in the woods. The knot in her stomach had slithered into Gordian proportions. It was going to take Alexander and his sword to slice through it later if the death of the wendigo didn’t do the job. She knew what it was like to try and get out of the life and just be normal, Alix also knew what it was like to be dragged back into it against your will. Ralphy had done that to her, shattering the little bit of peace she’d found on her homestead. He was yanking her around like a marionette whose strings were too short now, using everything he was somehow finding out to guarantee she didn’t break free. Realising what she was asking Ben to do after she’d put the phone down with him had started that knot in the pit of her stomach tightening. There’d been a time when she’d been friendly with both his dad and his uncle, particularly his uncle, and despite the distance that had grown between them since Alix didn’t want to be the one making that phone call to explain that she’d been the reason lightning had struck twice. It was bad enough that she was pulling Ben back down in the mud. When you were cutting yourself off from as many people as possible to avoid having to kill them under orders later, you didn’t have much choice. The option to reach out to former hunting associates was as risky as it came, all of them likely to drop a friendly word to her parents later. Ben was the only one she could trust for now, the only person in that unique position to help her right here and she was practically going to owe him her soul for doing it later.
Lines cut deep in her pale face as Ben immediately began to assure her that he’d been thinking about getting back into the life anyway. Alix was keeping the smile up but that little voice inside of her was cursing up a blue streak. Out of all of them the kid probably deserved that chance of a normal life more than any of them. Alix lifted a hand, scrubbing her fingertips through the short red curls again. ”If I were you I might just have quit completely,” she admitted. ”I know how hard it is though. Eventually you get the itch.” And wasn’t that a fat little lie. In those months she’d been able to hide out, adjusting to what the hell the Dread Doctors had done to her, she’d blissfully left the whole thing behind. ”If it’s a kidney you need, don’t worry, I’ve got plenty to go around,” she quipped. And a body that would probably regrow one before the doctors would even have her off the table. Pushing the thought of how abnormal she was now from her mind, Alix let go of Ben’s warm. ”Seriously though, anytime. I … they’re not easy I know.” She didn’t want to come right out and say she’d heard whispers about what had happened to him, that was just going to make this all a thousand times worse, just Ben’s realization of what they were dealing with was bad enough. Alix’s hand rose and fell as she went to reach out again but Ben was already pulling himself together, his voice emerging steadier now. ”I think that’s what we’re dealing with,” she whispered as she shouldered her own bag and retrieved the shotgun from its sling under the driver’s seat. It wouldn’t kill the wendigo but it could slow it down enough for them to burn it. ”As far as I could. It looks like it’s holed up in one of the caves out here, the woods are filled with them. You know the track that leads from the witch’s cemetery towards the falls?” It was one of the dozen main trails that criss-crossed out here, trails she’d walked a hundred times.

Ben had been through a lot during his life so far. Things were easier while his memories of the supernatural world were locked away but that world had soon caught up with not just him but his mom as well. Ever since then Ben had been throwing himself into hunting originally as a way to deal with her loss and then as a way to try and move on from it. He had spent such a long time trying to find the vampire that was responsible for killing his mom and he had finally found the monster at the same time that he had found his dad. Ben knew that things weren’t always black and white, there were so many shades of grey and so many supernaturals that wanted nothing more than to live normal lives and he wasn’t afraid to step in and protect them if they needed it as well. He still wasn’t sure if his dad shared that view or not but Ben knew to keep an open mind and that was something that he knew he wasn’t going to let change. He had a lot of friends around town who were supernatural and as far as he was concerned they were off limits to all hunters but there were plenty of creatures in Mystic Falls who were only interested in causing death and destruction wherever they went. Those creatures needed to be stopped and that meant that there were plenty of cases that needed to be worked in Mystic Falls and that was something that Ben was pretty sure wasn’t going to change anytime soon. He still didn’t understand why so many supernaturals were drawn to the town but all he and everyone else could do was try and figure things out as best they could and that was exactly what he was trying to do. As soon as Alix had reached out and asked for his help on a case he had known that there was no way that he was going to say no. She was someone who had become a friend to him while they had worked together on other cases and it had been a surprise to learn that she was in Mystic Falls but as far as he was concerned it was definitely a good thing. He wouldn’t be surprised if there was another reason why Alix was in town since that seemed to be the norm these days but she had asked for his help and he knew that he would regret it if he didn’t give it considering that she had been there for him in the past. He had taken a break from hunting after he died and Henrik brought him back before starting to take on the odd case but he had been thinking about getting back into the life more and more lately and this was hopefully going to be a way of easing himself back into it properly. “With everything that’s going on here I don’t think I could ever walk away from it for good but it has been nice having a normal life for a while,” he admitted. He knew that he was going to have to make sure that he found more of a balance when he did get back into it properly but he was confident that he would figure something out. “I’ll remember that,” he chuckled. He knew that it wouldn’t be for anything as drastic as that but something told him that he would be calling the favour in sooner or later. Alix’s next words were enough to make him hesitate and he studied her carefully for a moment. “You heard what happened?” he asked, knowing that he wouldn’t be surprised if the answer to that question was yes given that she knew both his dad and uncle. He hadn’t told many people about what had happened, in fact most of the friends he’d made during his time in Mystic Falls were still in the dark about it, but it was something that he was doing his best to move on from. “Yeah, I do,” he nodded. He was still nervous after what had happened the last time he had gone up against a wendigo but he knew that he just had to keep telling himself that it was going to be different this time. He wasn’t a coward and he knew that he wasn’t going to let something like that hold him back from doing what needed to be done. “It’ll probably take us a while to find the right one, we’d better get going.”ALIX QUINN

TLife was never going to be normal for her after what the Dread Doctors had done to her. Chances were it never could’ve been, even if she hadn’t been snatched and twisted into this thing. Her family had always hunted, not a single one of them breaking away to do anything else. At least that’s what her dad had always led her to believe. Not knowing better then about her aunt, Alix had seen hunting as the only way until Ralphy had decided that she needed to be turned into his own personal murderous puppet. She’d run and he’d taken so long to jerk her strings and start choking the freewill out of her that she’d thought maybe she had a chance at that normal life. Some of the pictures she’d taken then, around the homestead in the middle of nowhere that she’d been able to call home, were up on the walls of her warehouse. A taste of what she’d had for a time. Ralphy had made certain there was no going back to that though. His strings were firmly tied around her wrists, around her throat. Others had a chance … but not her anymore. She’d half hoped that Ben would’ve managed to leave it all behind as a Winchester Alix knew that was almost impossible. It was in his blood and eventually it would come calling at the door again, even if he tried to get away from it. Some things in life were just inevitable. Others were of your own making, or other peoples’.
The guilt had been tickling at the back of her neck and tearing at her guts since she’d put the call out to him. Alix knew how this was going to come off if Dean heard that she’d dragged his son out after a wendigo, knowing full well what had happened with one the last time. There was almost no turning back now though. If she sent Ben home and tried taking this thing on alone there was a decent chance she wouldn’t be walking out of here, crawling maybe, although even that was doubtful. If she had both of them retreat she’d only have to find someone else to come out here again. Knowing that Ben could’ve been out of this entirely was only making it worse. One corner of Alix’s mouth lifted almost sadly. ”Feels good catching your breath,” she agreed wryly. ”Feels good helping the way you know you can though. It’s a Catch-22.” One all the worse from her side, given how much more weight she had on the side of not helping in this town. In a way that was maybe a little macabre she tried to lighten the mood, thankfully it had Ben chuckling, although it didn’t last long.
She saw him hesitate, something in what she said giving away the fact that she knew what had happened and had asked him to come anyway. Alix swallowed hard, nodding before she glanced away. ”Hunter grapevine,” she managed hoarsely. ”I’m sorry you had to go through that. Look, if you not feeling up to this, we can head back, regroup…” Somehow she’d find someone else to take in. Clearing her throat, Alix hefted her bag slightly. ”We can probably rule out a few,” she said, nodding Ben in the direction she suspected the wendigo lay in. ”The ones close to the falls get a lot of visitors. If something like that was anywhere with a lot of people around someone would’ve gone after it by now. The early part of the track passes another section of cliff, rumour has it there’s a good half dozen caves back there. I think that’s our best bet. You bring anything that would work on one?” The Winchesters were always well prepared, she knew that much from spending time around Dean and Sam but she hadn’t made it clear what they were going after before they’d met up.

Ben knew that he could have walked away from hunting after his dad had made a deal to bring him back and he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t thought about it but hunting was literally in his blood and he knew that he couldn’t walk away when there were people in town who needed help. He had taken a break for a while and only worked the odd case here and there but he had never turned his back on it completely and he wasn’t sure that he ever would. He had missed being a normal kid during the years when hunting had been his sole focus so enrolling himself in high school had given him that back. It hadn’t been easy and there had been a few times when he had thought about dropping out but he knew that he didn’t want that to be his life. He had made the decision to go back to school not just so that he could blend in and stop people from asking questions about why he wasn’t there but also so that he could have a slice of normality back in his life. He knew that that had been the right decision for him and he also knew that going back to hunting was the right thing for him as well. There was always so much going on in Mystic Falls and he had a lot of friends around him who needed help so he knew that he wouldn’t be able to forgive himself if something happened to them or to anyone else because he decided that it was time he got out of the life. Instead he kept hunting and even though he hadn’t been doing so as much lately he had been thinking about getting back into it properly anyway. Hayden had urged him to take it easy for a while and take a break and he had done that at her request only to end up losing her when she moved away anyway so he knew better than to try and do that for anyone again. “Exactly,” Ben nodded, pretty sure that Alix completely understood the dilemma. He knew that he needed to find a balance between hunting and having a normal life again and he wasn’t going to let anything stop him from finding that. As Alix said that she had heard what had happened to him through the hunter grapevine, Ben nodded. He knew how much hunters liked to talk to he knew that it shouldn’t really come as too much of a surprise but until now the only people that had known were the people that he had told although he knew that it was possible that his dad, Sam, Brooke or even Hayden had said something to a few people which had resulted in others finding out as well. As she said that they could head back if he wasn’t feeling up to it, Ben shook his head. “No. I said I would back you up and I meant it. We’re doing this,” he said, knowing that he wasn’t going to let his fear of history repeating itself get in the way of them working a case. He would be lying if he said that he wasn’t wondering if Alix had known what she was hunting when she had called him but either way he knew that it didn’t really matter, a monster that liked to kill people needed to be stopped and that was exactly what they were going to do. “Sounds good,” he nodded as Alix filled him in on her thinking. As she asked if he had anything that would work on one he let his bag slide off his shoulder and opened it, showing it to Alix so she could see the contents. “Silver stakes, flares and a blowtorch should do the trick, never leave home without them.” There were a number of other items in there as well that would be useful for fighting against the creature but wouldn’t be enough to kill the thing although they would at least slow it down. “Which cave shall we start with?”ALIX QUINN

To let Ralphy continue yanking her around on a chain or to run completely, hoping that she’d learned to keep her head down enough to stay out of range of her family. It was her own Catch-22. Chances were that Ralphy would track her down eventually. The man seemed to have a bead on her at all times, to know what moods settled over her brain like dark clouds, to know exactly who she spoke to, who she allowed herself to get that inch closer to. Alix knew she’d get some sort of head start though … and would spend however many years it took for them to find her constantly looking over her shoulder. It was what she’d tried to avoid by settling in that homestead, busying herself with her cameras, with just living. It had come to a bitter end though. Ralphy hadn’t shot her, he’d decided to muzzle his werecoyote niece instead. To yoke her and continually force her hands. Blaming him for everything wasn’t fair though, her hand had been on the weapon often enough and Alix would’ve admitted she’d stumbled into enough mine fields of her own, blowing some to pieces on purpose.
This hadn’t been one of them. Not really. Guilt continued to lay in her stomach but it was growing more obvious that Ben was old enough now to make his own decisions. He could’ve chosen not to go back to hunting at all. He could’ve turned her down on the phone or maybe would when she revealed to him what they were hunting. Understanding his dilemma more than her probably knew Alix sighed, let her mouth level out into a faint smile. ”You ever worked it out entirely, let me know.” That was the thought of the day. Let me know. If he had any insights on the rock and the hard place they were both trapped in. If he was up for this hunt. If her dragging him in had been entirely purposeful it would’ve left her no better than her sadistic uncle. There was apology in her tone instead. Green eyes returned to Ben at his firm tone. Alix tilted her head slightly, lifting a finger to aim at him. ”You change your mind about it at any point, you speak up OK?” She didn’t want to be to blame for killing Dean’s kid, for ignoring his misgiving about this and force him in there anyway. There was enough tipping her scales out of balance as it was.
The kid could handle himself, she’d learned that before but she felt a pride in the pit of her stomach now as she checked in with him if he had what they would need. Reaching out a hand, Alix clapped it against Ben’s shoulder before she started moving again. ”All we need is a pack of cards and we should be set,” she said with dry humour in her voice. ”I got my hands on some phosporous. Even if we can’t get close to it we should be able to burn it in its lair if we have to.” The phosporous would destroy anything it touched. It was immensely dangerous but volatile had far less meaning for her these days. Alix pushed a tree branch out of their path, using the other hand to gesture East. ”The closest. That part of the track is the toughest. It’s got the most cover. Which one did it happen in?” Alix swallowed hard as she avoided looking back at Ben with sympathy in her eyes. ”I didn’t get that much from the scuttlebutt about what happened.” It would be a bigger kick in the teeth if this thing had just taken up where its predecessor had left off.

When he was younger Ben had imagined himself doing lots of different things but hunting the supernatural had never even crossed his mind. He had thought about becoming a fire fighter or a police officer and a lot of different things just like all of his friends had done at that age but his life had ended up taking a very different turn. His eyes were opened to the supernatural the day that he and his mom were attacked by a vampire and she was killed and ever since then he had been living his life as best he could. For years he had wanted nothing more than to get revenge against the vampire that had killed her and kill the monster in return and he had finally managed it after he got to Mystic Falls but along the way he had come to realise that not everyone who was supernatural was bad. During his travels as well as during his time in Mystic Falls so far he had befriended vampires, werewolves, witches and lots of different creatures as well. He knew that a lot of hunters just saw what a person was rather than who they were but Ben wasn’t like that at all. He knew that it was who a person that counted rather than what they were and he knew that Alix saw it that way too. They had helped each other out before and he had known that he couldn’t turn his back on her when she called him for help. Had he known that she was hunting a wendigo then he knew that things might have been different but deep down he liked to think that the outcome still would have been the same. He wasn’t a coward, he had never let his fear define him before and he knew that he wasn’t going to start now. “I think the best any of us can do is try and find a balance between hunting and having a normal life. That’s what I’m trying to do,” Ben shrugged. That was something that he had been trying to do ever since he’d died and he didn’t regret it. Hunting was important and he liked knowing that he was doing some good in the world but he had come to realise just how short life really was and he knew how important it was to have some fun while he had the chance as well. He could understand why Alix was checking on him now but there really wasn’t any need to as far as he was concerned. “I’m not going to change my mind. I promised I would have your back and I’m going to keep that promise,” he assured her. There wasn’t a doubt in his mind about that, he knew that this hunt wasn’t going to be easy but he had never turned his back when things became difficult, it just wasn’t who he was and that hadn’t changed. “Probably a good thing we haven’t got any, I wouldn’t want you to be distracted by losing,” Ben teased. Playing cards had ended up becoming a hobby with a lot of the hunters he had met over the years so he had learned a few tricks along the way. “Great,” he nodded, trying to ignore the feeling of dread that was building in his stomach. He knew that he wasn’t going to back down but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t still going to be on his guard every minute until the creature was killed. Nodding as Alix picked the cave they should start with, Ben’s gaze drifted off into the distance as she asked which cave the incident happened in. “It was north of here. The whole mine was completely destroyed,” he explained before heading in the direction of the cave that Alix had suggested, not wanting to dwell on what had happened any more than he had to. “Let’s get this done.”ALIX QUINN

The kid was making it sound so easy. Alix almost wanted to laugh at it. There was no sort of balance at all with Ralphy still giving her orders. She knew that her own ethical scales were way out of whack at this point, no amount of work she did to try and keep people out of the hands of the Dread Doctors and make up for the blood saturating the other side of it could bring them back into balance again. She’d tried it, tried to escape what she was and in the end it hadn’t worked. Ralphy had dragged her right back into it … and now she was doing the same to Ben.
Alix felt the pit of her stomach sink slightly as one corner of her mouth kicked up a little higher. She could promise the kid all she wanted but at the end of the day the best he was talking about wouldn’t happen until she could either find some way to break free of Ralphy or somebody finally snapped back and killed him. Right now she couldn’t see him just choosing to give him. Drawing in a deep breath through her nose she nodded at Ben. ”I really hope it works out for you,” she told him honestly. If she ever got that sort of best then maybe all of this would’ve been worth it. For now if she could take out this wendigo with Ben’s help she was going to call it a win.
Studying Ben as she gave him the option to pull out of helping her with this, Alix narrowed her green eyes. She wouldn’t have blamed him for not wanting to go back up against something that had almost killed him. Personally she’d ended up a little gun-shy about werewolves after the Alpha had nearly killed her. Nodding finally as he assured her he wouldn’t change his mind and that he was going to keep her promise, she clapped him on the shoulder. ”I appreciate it,” she promised. With ease and grace she started working her way towards the cave. A smirk tugged at her lips, one red brow arching at him as she hopped over a downed tree like a gazelle. ”What makes you think I’m gonna be the one losing? I guess everybody’s a card sharp in this game.” There’d certainly been enough nights growing up where she’d ended up in some motel room in the middle of nowhere, playing games of poker with her brothers just to pass the time until the thing they were there to find kicked off.
Hopefully there wouldn’t be a long wait for it to happen this time. If they could just find where the thing had set up shop then maybe they could take it down clean without any damage to either one of them. Alix looked in the direction Ben had indicated and then studied his face. ”That’s … good. It takes one option off the list at least.” And it meant that Ben wouldn’t have to end up back in the spot where he’d died. Her stomach twisting she started down the path again, approaching the first cave in the string … or God forbid, network of them at a decent clip. The going was tough but she cleared as much of it for Ben as she could, trying to make his path a little easier in her wake. ”Your dad took care of that one right?” There was a slight tension to her voice. She was pretty sure it was dead but she’d been wrong about that sort of thing before and it wasn’t something she wanted to go through again.
