Knees drawn to her chest, the dregs of a cup of coffee clutched in her hands, Alix watched the sun rise over the roofs of the buildings beyond hers. The man who’d left her three messages as she’d proceeded not to answer last night lay in one of them. As a wide-eyed seventeen year old, who absolutely would’ve swooned over those jade like eyes, the view would’ve offered her nothing more than a glimpse of a dark window, maybe a flicker of movement beyond, as a changed woman of twenty six she’d watched him rise with that dawn. She knew what he looked like when his face was still lined with sleep, had felt Derek’s stubbled jaw scrape her shoulder as she’d woken still tangled up with him and last night when Ralphy had called full of pep and amusement after the last pay-out, Alix had known she couldn’t let herself have that this morning. There was no doubt in her mind that the vampire she’d found in a farmhouse ten miles outside of town had deserved it, he was still feeding on the wife in front of the drained body of her husband after all, but Ralphy’s joy left a sour taste in her mouth. Derek knew the basics now, that she’d been a hunter before the Dread Doctors, that she was still in the game even though she was distant from her family. Alix knew he’d have heard her out on the rest but a part of her was ashamed enough not to admit how many she’d killed who hadn’t deserved it. Eventually there would be another of those and the part of her that had never agreed with indiscriminate killing would be desperate to balance those scales if she couldn’t toss the scales aside entirely. Setting the cup aside, Alix picked up her phone, ignoring the blue flashing light of a fresh message to thumb in a number she’d committed to memory.
Despite the hour it rang in her ear, the man on the other end as ignorant of who she was and what she wanted of him as Derek had been that first night. Like Derek Brady wouldn’t find out about her side-line as the region’s premier supernatural assassin but she’d fill him in on her connection to the Dread Doctors and do everything possible to keep his people out of their grasp. Hearing it picked up on the other end Alix slipped off of the windowsill and began to pace. ”Hi. Am I speaking to Brady?” Alix let just a little amused rue into her voice, waiting for his affirmation before she launched into her spiel. ”I’m sorry I’m calling so early. The owner of the garage gave me your number, he thought you’d be the best guy to help me out with my trunk. I think I must have hit a rock or something while I was driving home, maybe cracked the oil pan. Is there a chance you can come and take a look at it for me?” She’d expected far more of a fight but like Derek Brady was less suspicious than she desperately wanted him to be. Having established that he’d come out to the parking lot behind her building where the truck had been towed to from the gas station where she’d first met Derek, Alix tugged on a pair of boots and headed downstairs. A half hour later she was leaning against the fender of her truck, watching another vehicle pull into her lot. Straightening up she moved towards it as it came to a stop, her hand already extended to the guy emerging. ”Brady, I presume? I’m Alix, and this is the thorn in my side. It seems as though every time I fix one problem with it another crops up.” She jerked her thumb over her shoulder at the truck she’d purposefully sabotaged to get Derek to look at it in the first place. It should have been no surprise that it had trashed itself a second time, that was the way her life had gone for years.

When Brady left Mystic Falls after graduating from high school he had never thought that he would end up back there again. Life in New Orleans had been full of ups and downs but that seemed to be the way that things went for Brady no matter where he went. Even now there were times when he still found himself thinking back to those years he had spent held captive in Ecuador, cut off from everyone that he loved and certain that he would never get to see them again. He had never felt as helpless before as he had then but he had survived and that was something that he was doing his best to hold on to. He hadn’t known the truth about his family before he triggered his own werewolf curse, he had known that there was something different about them but he had felt sure that there was an innocent explanation to it. Growing up he had always known that his dad seemed to disappear every month around the time of the full moon but it had always been masked as business trips or something else that could be explained away easily so he had never given it too much thought. Now he knew exactly why his dad had taken off every month, though, and it was for the same reason that Brady had to make sure that he was far away from his siblings during the full moon. Liam and Mel both knew the truth about their family now, Brady had filled them in after their parents were killed, and he knew that neither of them wanted to trigger their own curse. Liam was doing his best to stay out of trouble but Mel was a different story entirely. She and half of the pack had disappeared while they were all still living in New Orleans before they had even finished packing up their lives ready for the move to Mystic Falls. For weeks Brady had searched the city for them before enlisting the help of one of the French Quarter witches who had owed him a favour and it had been a shock to learn that Mel and the others were already in Mystic Falls but it had made Brady even more determined to move to the town and find them. As it was he and the rest of the pack had made it to Mystic Falls a few days ago and even though they had yet to find Mel and the others who had gone missing they weren’t giving up. They were all settling into their new lives which for Brady meant starting work at the local garage but during his free time he spent as much time searching for his sister and the others as he could. Even now he still couldn’t quite get his head around the fact that he was an Alpha, his former Alpha had decided to try and kill not just him but everyone else in the pack just so that he could grow stronger after hearing about it from another Alpha who had done the same thing and had been passing through New Orleans and Brady had simply been defending himself but in that moment he had known that it was either he was going to die or his Alpha was and he had known that he couldn’t leave his family again. Instead he had taken a life, the first since he had triggered his curse, and he had hoped that while he and the others were in Mystic Falls he would be able to start finding his feet in his new position as pack leader but so far there hadn’t been time for that. At the moment it seemed to be one thing after another for them all but he knew that when they found Mel and the others things would finally start settling down so until then they just had to hang in there. After a long night of searching for his sister the night before Brady had been looking forward to having the morning to himself to catch up on sleep before heading into work that afternoon but it wasn’t to be. Far too early his phone rang and after hearing what the problem was Brady assured the woman that he would be there as quickly as he could before dragging himself out of bed and getting dressed. He knew that he could have easily turned the job down, after all he wasn’t working that morning, but he wasn’t that kind of person so half an hour later he was pulling into the parking lot. Climbing out, he nodded as the woman spoke and shook her outstretched hand. “I am, it’s nice to meet you Alix,” he said as he grabbed his back of tools from the passenger’s seat. “That’s usually the way. On the outside the truck seems in pretty good condition so hopefully this will be the end of your run of bad luck,” he said as he made his way to the back of his car and pulled out the creeper. There was something familiar about Alix, something that he couldn’t quite put his finger on, but he knew that he would have remembered if he had ever seen her before. “What happened exactly?” he asked, knowing that that would help him get to the bottom of what the problem was. Opportunities weren’t to be wasted. It was one of the things that her dad had always tried to hammer into his kids, one of the things her dad had drummed into her until her ears had nearly bled after her first hunt had gone so badly. Passing those opportunities up, standing there with your mouth hanging open as they slid by, was an absolute waste and at the very worst they could get you killed. Ripping the oil pan of her truck hadn’t been on the agenda on the day that she’d intercepted Derek Hale but in the end it had worked for her in a way she hadn’t expected. Instead of watching Derek drive away, she’d found herself driven to a motel by him and that slow, half unanticipated entanglement had started. Some would’ve said that wasn’t opportunity but some sort of curse instead given the way that Ralphy had almost forced her to kill him in the street, but some optimistic little part of her was still whispering that she might’ve done him some good in all of this. Her aim from the very start had been to get people away from the Dread Doctors after they were released, to prevent them from falling back into the Doctors’ hands again, to stop all that added experimentation she’d heard about and prevent them from becoming dispensable failures, tossed aside on the scrap heap. From what she’d been able to gather Alix knew that Brady and what remained of his pack hadn’t been in town for more than a few days but those that had been snatched from New Orleans had somehow found themselves here … were still here somewhere … if only they could be found.
Alix doubted she’d be able to pinpoint the exact spot that he’d find his sister and the rest of them to Brady but she knew that there was some help she could offer here. Was it going to make up for the taint she’d brought to Derek’s life by getting herself involved with him? Not likely but if she could bury herself in something else it might at least keep her from growing weak and heading back for his bed. Dragging herself away from the window where she’d been watching him she’d made Brady’s morning just a little worse by dragging him out of bed. He didn’t look like he was going to admit it was a bother when he arrived and shook her hand though. In fact he seemed pretty easy-going about the whole thing. ”Would’ve been nicer to meet if I’d managed to call an hour later though, right?” she asked with a thin trace of humour as he grabbed his tools. Alix glanced over her shoulder at her truck, her mouth curving faintly. ”My dad always made sure I knew how to take care of it. I guess, maybe I’d slacked a little lately.” Under the hood had been pristine until she’d managed to unknowingly hit that truck. Trailing back to the truck, pushing her hair back behind her ears, Alix managed a good-natured wince. ”To be honest with you. I didn’t even know it had happened at the time. I was heading back into town from my parents’ place, took some of those scenic roads through the woods. You know, the ones that are barely a track, let alone a road? It got a little rough, but I didn’t think anything of it until I tried to start the truck up this morning to head back out to get some work done in the woods and she just wouldn’t start up. That was when I noticed the leak under the truck.” She let her gaze flick up to Brady’s face as she crouched and gestured at the stain working its way out from beneath the truck.

Years ago Brady couldn’t have gotten away from Mystic Falls fast enough so it was still a little strange to be back there willingly now but the truth was that after he’d returned home and found out what had happened to his parents it was the first place that had sprung to mind as a safe haven not just for Brady and his siblings but for the rest of the pack as well. So much had happened in New Orleans and so many people in his life had died there so if he was honest he had known that a fresh start would probably do them all some good but he hadn’t been about to run away from his responsibilities. There was a time when he might have done just that, too immature to even think about putting the needs of anyone else before his own, but those days were long gone. Now everything he did was an attempt to keep the people that he loved safe. He had stepped up and become legal guardian to his younger siblings and he had also stepped up to lead the pack after he had unintentionally taken that power from their previous alpha. That definitely wasn’t something that Brady had planned on but after their alpha started killing off pack members so that he could gain more power he had known that he didn’t have any other choice. It had come down to a case of kill or be killed and had Brady let his alpha continue then the rest of the pack would have died too and Liam and Mel would have been all alone in the world after their parents died so it really hadn’t been an option. He had honestly expected a few of the pack to hate his idea but most of them had been happy to start over. A couple had stayed behind in New Orleans for a little longer with a view to joining them later if things worked out the way they hoped and Brady respected that decision. He hadn’t wanted anyone to make the move who wasn’t completely behind the idea so he knew that this was just the way that it had to be. The fact that Mel and a few of the other pack members had disappeared from New Orleans before they’d actually set a date for the move had scared Brady, not that he had ever shown it, and since then he had been searching for them. He knew that it was strange that they had shown up in Mystic Falls but so far he had yet to locate them and that worried him even more. Most of his time had been spent searching for them but he had to work as well and that was exactly what he was trying to do that way. “Yeah, it would have been,” he chuckled. He had grown used to not being able to get a lot of sleep during the years he had been held captive but considering he had spent most of the night searching for Mel and the others he knew that another hour or so of sleep would have helped a lot. “Even if you have I’m sure it won’t be anything that can’t be fixed,” he assured her. It made his job so much easier when people knew how to take care of their vehicles and Alix at least seemed to know her stuff. Crouching down next to her, Brady found himself nodding as he caught sight of the stain she had mentioned. “There are a few things that could cause that but I won’t know until I take a closer look,” he admitted before straightening up. “When you tried starting the engine did it make any noise at all?” he asked, knowing that that would be a good place to start when it came to diagnosing the problem. People took off from their old lives all the time. Most weren’t set running for the same reason she had been but Alix imagined there were hundreds world over who knew what it felt like to have their family turning against them. From what she’d been able to gather Brady hadn’t suffered that way, in fact, his family had gone to great lengths to try and get him back when he had gone missing. His parents had cared right up to the moment they’d been killed. Instead of running straight after that it seemed like he’d been trying to do the best for his brother and sister in difficult circumstances. The Dread Doctors hadn’t given a damn about that when they’d taken people from the newly minted Kinsella pack. In fact the targeting was probably because of that misery. The Dread Doctors had a way of picking on people they could manipulate and not just on the surface. They dug beneath, mined out the very soul of people until all that was left was confusion and pain. Most did run then, not stopping until they thought they were safe, thought being the operative word. Alix couldn’t deny she’d done the same but her running had been back to her family for just long enough to be able to pack up her stuff and say her farewells. She’d have holed up in her cabin afterwards, spent decades in her self-imposed prison but then Ralphy had jerked her strings and given her no option but to leave all of that behind. Ralphy wasn’t controlling everything though, he had no say over her approaching those who’d ended up in the same situation she had. He might’ve tried to by putting Derek on that list and cutting her off from the one person she’d anchored herself to in the last couple of years, but he’d failed … at least technically.
Even as she was pasting on an apologetic smile for Brady she was glancing in the direction of Derek’s apartment building. The one that was currently a no-go area for her. Coming clean to him about what Ralphy had blackmailed her into doing had set the bridge that had already started smoldering between them to full on burning. ”Sorry,” Alix managed, relatively honestly as she looked back at her erstwhile savior here. ”Next time I’ll try and shift the start of my work day til a little later so the emergency doesn’t come at the crack of dawn.” She might just head out to the woods with her camera after she’d come clean to Brady and offered a helping hand, but with that yawning pit in her stomach, the jury was still out on that. Alix tried for a faint chuckle as he assured her that her problem wouldn’t likely be anything that couldn’t be fixed. ”Probably not the way my dad would see it. He’s always been a stickler for things like that. I used to get the lecture practically daily that Quinns were never caught unawares.” She shook her head at the thought. That had been exactly had she’d been caught every damn time her life had crumbled. Brow furrowing, Alix pretended to file through her memories. The truth was she hadn’t tried again after she’d done it in front of Derek. ”Maybe a little rattling. The engine definitely didn’t catch. I tried it twice, maybe three times and then I got out to take a look. My dad always make sure we knew what we were looking at under the hood and this was definitely something I knew I wasn’t qualified to deal with.” Out on the road she probably could’ve done, working through instructions she found on the web, taking care of herself the way her dad had always wanted her to do. This was Mystic Falls though and she had plans to see through to fruition, which included continuing to play the damsel in distress.

Early morning wake up calls really weren’t something that Brady liked but with no one else to take the call he had known that he didn’t have a choice in the matter but there wasn’t any way that he would have left someone stranded anyway. He knew that his job wasn’t as important as most but it was something that he was good at and he still got to help people in his own way so he knew that things could have easily ended up being a lot worse. After spending years held captive and tortured it had felt good to be able to get back to doing something that he enjoyed and working on cars had helped him process everything that he had been through. There was a message to taking an engine apart and putting it back together and he liked the satisfaction that came with figuring out what the case of a person’s problem was. It might sound strange but to him it was oddly therapeutic and it had certainly helped him over the years so it had been easy enough to fall back into that career when he moved to Mystic Falls. He and his siblings had their parents’ money at their disposal and he had used some of that to buy a place for them to live in but the rest was set aside for an emergency or for Mel and Liam in case they wanted to go to college when they graduated from high school so he was doing his best to make his own way in the world rather than relying on his parents’ money and spending all of it before his siblings were old enough to have access to it. Of course he needed to find Mel before that could happen as well but he refused to give up hope. He knew that his sister and the missing members of his pack were in town somewhere and even though he had yet to find them he knew that he wasn’t going to let that put him off. He’d had to call in a favour with a witch in New Orleans to learn where they had all gone but the witch had pointed him in the direction of Mystic Falls even though it hadn’t been time for them to head there yet. It didn’t make any sense but he knew that they were there somewhere, he could feel it, so he was certain that he just had to keep looking. Needless to say most of his free time was being spent doing just that but that day he had to work even though it was still early. “It’s fine, can’t be helped,” Brady shrugged. He knew that it wasn’t Alix’s fault so he just hoped that the problem wasn’t anything major and that he would be able to get her back onto the road from here rather than having to tow her car back to the garage. As Alix spoke again, Brady’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “You know, my mom always used to say exactly the same thing about my family. I guess it must be a common thing for some families,” he shrugged although there was a warning starting to build in the back of his mind. His mom had rarely talked about her family but the Quinn name was familiar to him although he wasn’t ready to give that little detail away just yet. As she explained what had happened, Brady nodded. “There’s a number of things that could be, let me see what I can do,” he said before taking a look at the truck. It was easy to get immersed in that and it took him a little while to find what he thought was the source of the problem before emerging and cleaning his hands on a rag that he’d brought with him. “Try the engine now,” he instructed, hoping that the problem was what he’d thought it was. ’You could’ve been an actress’. The teenage boy’s drawled words had steamed up the air last winter when she’d tracked him down three states away from here. He’d been one of the first she’d approached, his amusement at her attempt to sucker him into talking to her before she stepped out from behind the curtain and revealed everything obvious the moment she’d come clean. It hadn’t stopped him from suddenly starting to haemorrhage mercury, or the Docs from arriving to take him but that lack of rancor when it was revealed that she’d just been playing a role had given her the courage to do it again. Time and time she’d suckered people in with a story before she’d stepped into the limelight and revealed that she knew exactly what horrors had been done to them. Alix didn’t know if Brady had any clue about what had really happened to his pack or his own sister but after what had happened with Derek, she wanted to be able to give somebody a little hope that things weren’t as horrific as they might’ve thought. What she had to tell Brady when they got past the ruse of him fixing the truth might not be huge, it might not locate his pack, but it would be something. An evening up of the scales the situation with Derek had thrown way out of whack again.
Standing here next to the truck reminded her of him all too much. It had her shoulders hunching faintly as she forced herself to look away from his building. She was absolutely persona non grata after her little confession. She swallowed hard, scuffing a foot against the blacktop. ”It could’ve been if I’d taken a little more care of it maybe,” she countered, the words half honest. There’d have to be some sort of reason to cross paths with him but the truck had just been convenient. Alix’s ruddy brows drew together faintly as the jokey comment came back to her. ”Really?” she asked with some brittle amusement. ”I guess my dad wasn’t the only boy scout wannabe out there. It was a constant be prepared thing.” More than once she hadn’t been, it had almost cost her an arm, had cost her part of her humanity, and it damaged her truck. Ralphy would’ve laughed about it but he was thankfully miles away. Green eyes narrowing she shifted to the side to watch him working around the truck. ”I’m going to have to give you a huge bonus if you manage it that fast,” Alix told him with a trace of embarrassment. She drifted to the driver’s side as he looked at the engine, opening the door and settling into the seat with her feet up on the dash to watch him. At least while he was working she could do that without embarrassment. A trace of heat touched her cheeks as he emerged, her feet clattering down as she started it up. Immediately the engine roared to life, leaving genuine confusion on her face. ”OK, give, what was it?” Alix held her hands up, wiggling her fingers at him. ”If it’s magic then I wanna know, that way Ralphy’s not the only one in the family who can pull off a trick.” Her uncle could still manage more though, a magician at manipulation unfortunately.

Brady was used to unusual callouts when people needed help with their cars but he hadn’t expected one to come through so early in the morning. It normally wouldn’t be a problem since he was often up early anyway but with Mel and a few other members of his pack still missing he often stayed out most of the night searching for them. There were times when he felt like he had searched the town a hundred times over only to end up coming up short but he knew that he couldn’t give up on them. He had lost so many people during the course of his life so far, he had lost his friends when they were slaughtered during the time that he was held captive, he had lost half his pack when their previous alpha lost his mind and decided to kill them so that he could gain more power and he had lost his parents recently. Mel, Liam and his pack were all that he had left and he refused to lose anyone else that he loved, he couldn’t. No matter what it took he knew that he would fight to get each and every one of them back where they belonged, he wasn’t going to give up. There were times when Liam went searching with him but there were times when Brady had had to put his foot down. Liam was a teenager now but he was also still in school and Brady knew that he couldn’t let his brother go missing any time there just because he had been out all night searching. Instead Brady had been doing the bulk of it himself and even though it wasn’t easy he knew that it was how it had to be. That morning he would be the first to admit that he could have done with some more sleep but he also knew that Alix couldn’t help the fact that she’d had car trouble and none of the other mechanics were available. The sooner he could get her back on the road the better so he knew that he wanted to get the problem fixed for her as quickly as possible so that she could get on with her day. “I don’t know, it actually seems like you have been taking pretty good care of it from what I can see,” he admitted. Most people didn’t bother taking care of their vehicles but Alix seemed to be an exception. “That sounds about right,” Brady nodded. His mom had been prepared for something different entirely, she had told him the truth about her side of the family being hunters a few months after he’d returned from Ecuador after finally escaping. He knew that she hadn’t wanted to tell him but she had wanted him to be prepared after learning who his new friends were but he doubted that the reason why Alix’s dad had wanted to be prepared was the same as his mom’s reason. “You might regret saying that,” Brady chuckled as Alix said that she would owe him a bonus if he managed to fix the problem quickly. It took him a little while but as Alix turned the key and the engine roared to life, Brady felt a satisfied smile work its way across his face and he lowered the hood. He was about to answer Alix’s question when he froze at the name she gave and his smile fell. It was a name that he had heard once before, the name of one of his mom’s brothers. It had seemed strange that Alix’s family had had the same desire to be prepared that his own parents had had but now it was all starting to feel into place. “Not Ralphy Quinn, by any chance?” he asked, knowing that if it was then he needed to get out of there as quickly as possible and make sure that Liam was safe. He would also have to double his efforts to find Mel and the others so that they could all get out of there if their uncle or other members of the family were on their way to town. ALIX QUINN

At some point most of those she approached and tried to fool called bullshit on her. With Derek it hadn’t been until she’d had a gun pointed at his head that he’d started peppering her with questions. Alix raked her teeth over her upper lip as she thought about it, her head ducking slightly to avoid looking at Brady through the windshield of the truck for a moment. No matter how much begging she’d done he hadn’t stopped until she’d gone to walk away and even then he’d pulled her back with the sort of harsh words that had cracked the dam in the end. That wasn’t going to happen here, Brady hadn’t seen enough of her to find the chink in her armour and she wasn’t allowed him to get close enough to duck underneath her shields. She was supposed to be helping him track down the missing members of his pack, not getting herself in over her head with someone, putting their life at risk again. Ralphy obviously had eyes and ears in the town and until she was certain of who they were she wasn’t giving anybody the room to get close. By the time Brady fixed her truck she’d have gotten the subject around to the missing persons here and that would be the end of the story.
Wouldn’t it?
Slowly the door had started to open, little bits and pieces of the truth about her family filtering into her words. Alix would’ve sworn that it was just to sell it all but each mention of her parents wrenched something inside of her all the same. Thinking about what had happened the night with Derek out on that road months ago had Alix snorting at Brady’s words. ”I had to have the oil pan replaced on it not that long ago because I went off road and it got torn up. That doesn’t seem like such good care to me,” she told him with her head tilted. Feet scuffing, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up Alix watched Brady nod over what she said. ”A lot of parents want to make sure their kids are safe,” she said, her voice taking on a husky tone that had her clearing her voice. Her own might’ve been doing that but it wasn’t just so she’d have clean underwear on in a crash or could balance her checkbook. The things they dealt with could kill you if you weren’t careful. Alix’s throat might still have been dry but she was smiling as she shook her head. ”I never regret making that sort of promise.” That much was true at least. She might’ve got out of him what was wrong with it but before he actually answered her question he was freezing in a way that had the alarm bells ringing loud in her head. Alix stared at him, her throat working as she tried to figure out if Ralphy’s feelers had gotten this far. ”That’s right,” she said, her tone purposefully level. ”Do you know my uncle?” Her breathing was coming faster now, the whoosh of her own heartbeat getting loud enough in her ears to half deafen her.

For a long time now Brady had been living his life looking over his shoulder. After he managed to escape his captivity in Ecuador he had often felt like he was being watched and perhaps he was but not for the reasons he thought. His return had resulted in a lot of media attention, attention that he had never wanted, and after he was legally pronounced alive once more he had been unable to ignore the way that passersby looked at him as they walked past him on the street. It had helped when Julian had returned to help him get back to normal and having Em around after that had helped too but there had still been times when he had caught people looking his way and that was something that he really didn’t like. He had done his best to keep his head down as much as he could and not draw anymore unwanted attention to himself but that hadn’t worked and he had ended up becoming the alpha of a pack that had already been half wiped out by their crazy alpha. Maybe that was what had drawn the attention of the hunters, he wasn’t sure. Either way he was certain that it had to have been hunters that had gone after his parents and he was determined to make sure that he didn’t lose anyone else he loved. Liam was being a pain but Brady still loved his brother and he knew that he would protect him no matter what. As for Mel, she was still missing but he knew that he just had to believe that it was only a matter of time before he found her. Right now he knew that he needed to get through this call before he could get on with the rest of his day but Alix seemed to at least be making it interesting for him which wasn’t a bad thing. Fixing vehicles was something that he was good at and even if he wasn’t able to get her truck back on the road that day he knew that he would once he had it back at the garage and had different parts at his disposal. He hoped that it wouldn’t come to that since she clearly had somewhere else to be if she was heading out this early but only time would tell. “I’ve still seen a lot worse, trust me,” Brady chuckled. There were a lot of people out there who didn’t seem to take care of their vehicles at all but Alix didn’t seem to be one of those people and it certainly made his job easier. “That’s true,” he agreed as she said that some parents just wanted to keep their kids safe. He felt that same protective instinct now that it was his responsibility to keep Liam and Mel safe so he definitely appreciated that in a way that he hadn’t before his parents died. Feeling a smile work its way across his face as Alix said that she would never regret promising him a bonus if he had managed to fix the truck already, Brady lowered the hood once the engine had roared to life and wiped his hands on the rag that was tucked into the back of his jeans. “Looks like you’re good to go unless there’s anything else you want me to check while I’m here.” He knew how easy it was to forget about other problems when something like that happened but he knew that the last thing he wanted was to send Alix on her way if she had noticed something else wrong with it. The moment she had mentioned Ralphy’s name it was enough to send alarm bells off in Brady’s head. He had asked the question but he wasn’t sure whether he actually wanted to know the answer and as she confirmed that it was Ralphy Quinn that she was talking about before asking how he knew her uncle, Brady’s survival instincts kicked in and his hand flew to her throat as he pinned her against the truck. “Did he send you here looking for us?” he growled, his claws protruding from his free hand as he held it high, ready to slash if he needed to. He had only heard the name once but it had been enough. The Quinns were hunters, every last one of them, and they hadn’t liked one of their own marrying a monster so if one of them was in town then it couldn’t be a coincidence and Brady knew that there could well be more on the way. People didn’t want to know how easy it was for their lives to be turned over, dug into without them knowing. Her included. As she’d stood in Derek’s apartment and listened to Stiles question him about her, Alix had felt exactly the same way others must’ve done when she did it to them. She hadn’t called the garage and gotten hold of Brady randomly, there’d been thought behind it, borne of the massive suspicion that members of his pack had been taken by the same people who had changed her. It was altruistic, a way to balance her scales but she suspected if she sat here now and told Brady what she was up to the knee jerk reaction would be suspicion. Bye bye happy little chit chat, bye bye ice breaker. It would be a sledgehammer to the gut and that nauseating wave of betrayal. If she had any other way of doing it that would work Alix would’ve taken it but these days she was boxed in more than ever. She needed to make a difference here and this was the only way for now she knew how to do it. Anything more and Ralphy would yank her strings, have her dancing to his tune like a well behaved marionette again instead of a puppet desperately sawing at her strings to get away from the bad karma that was surely following her like an ill wind now. Brady had been through so much, was still going through it with his sister, he didn’t deserve the lies but Alix hoped that on the other side of them would be a truth that would help him.
If she could even recognize the truth anymore she might be able to give that to him … once he fixed her truck. She tilted her head as she studied him, full lips quirked up at one corner in a wry smile. ”Bird’s nests in the engine, exhausts that look like Swiss Cheese, interiors so scuzzy you considered being irradiated when you got away from them?” she questioned. She’d seen hunters on the road, the sort her parents refused to work with, who had all of the above and more. Cleaning up the world, in their words, didn’t mean you were ready to clean up your own life. She’d been raised better than that, in that regard at least. In a way Alix could see that her parents had done their best with her but most of their teachings had been twisted by years of hating the things out there that they saw as monstrous. She swallowed hard as she forced herself to stop thinking of them. She straightened up, brushing her hands off on the hips of her jeans as Brady wiped his hands. ”Truck-wise I think we’re all,” she promised. ”Just the payment…” And the big white elephant of Uncle Ralphy in the parking lot. Suddenly Brady’s mood was changing. Alix tried to keep her own under control as she asked if he knew Ralphy but then Brady had a hand around her throat and he was pinning her to the truck. Her eyes widened, her body stiffening as she forced herself not to fight back. ”No,” she rasped. Her eyes flashed blue as she stared up at him, that feeling in her throat thickening. ”Not for you. Why would he have any clue who you are … other than …?” Her blue eyes lifted to his hand, staring pointedly at it. Ralphy had sent her after plenty of others but not the Kinsellas. Fear began to jack rabbit in the case of Alix’s throat. What the hell had Ralphy done and did he have a clue it might end up killing her?

In many ways Mystic Falls was just how Brady remembered it but now he knew about the supernatural world he knew that there was much more to the town than could be seen on the surface. There had to be a reason why Mel, Em and a few others from the pack had been taken from New Orleans and traced to Mystic Falls, he knew that it couldn’t just be a coincidence. They had all planned on moving there and had it been just a couple of the members from the pack he might have thought that they had just jumped the gun and moved before the rest of them but Mel and Em wouldn’t have done that. Neither of them would have left without telling him so he had known straight away that something bad was going on, he just hadn’t known what. The truth was he still didn’t know exactly what had happened to them, none of them had turned up so far despite the fact that the witch he had had perform the locator spell was still certain that they were in town somewhere and that in itself was strange but he knew that he just had to believe that he would find them sooner or later. Brady didn’t like telling anyone what was really going on with him but the truth was that he was still coming to terms with the fact that his parents and so many of his friends among the pack had died so he refused to lose anyone else, especially not his younger sister and someone who had always been one of his best friends. Needless to say most of his time was spent searching for them but Brady knew that he had a job to do as well. He knew that he and Liam could just live off the money that their parents had left them but Brady didn’t want to do that. He wanted that money to be kept safe so that his younger brother and sister could have the future that they wanted. It was more than enough to pay for college for the two of them and have some left over if that was what they wanted and if it wasn’t then he knew that they would figure something out together the same way they always did. Working was a distraction anyway and a welcome one at that so despite the early morning phone call the truth was that Brady didn’t mind too much. Fixing vehicles was something that he was good at and it gave him something else to focus on for a while so it wasn’t too bad. “All of the above,” Brady admitted as he wiped his hands on a rag. “I’ve dealt with some that smelt like something died in them too. I really don’t know how people let them get that bad,” he shrugged. Keeping vehicles clean, tidy and well maintained just wasn’t a priority for some people like it should be it seemed. “I’ve got a card machine with me if you want to pay now,” he offered, not sure whether Alix would want to do that or whether she would prefer to swing by the garage when she had some free time. Everything changed the moment that Ralphy’s name was mentioned, however, and before Brady knew it he was pinning Alix against the truck, knowing that he couldn’t afford to take any chances if she had come her to do what he thought she had. As she asked why her uncle would have any idea who he was other than the fact that he was a werewolf, Brady let his eyes flash red so she would see that he wasn’t just an ordinary werewolf. “How about that and the fact that my mother’s name was Nancy Quinn. Ralphy was her brother and I’m pretty sure he had something to do with her death.” It made sense, the witch that had cast the locator spell had warned him that the person responsible for taking his loved ones from him was family. At first he had thought that she had meant Mel and Em but kidnapping people and transporting them across the country wasn’t a hunter’s style so he knew that she had to have meant his parents instead and Alix’s presence in town couldn’t be a coincidence. Karma might have smacked her down from time to time but it hadn’t looked too closely at the rest of her family. They seemed to have lived charmed lives, Ralphy gliding through it with a grin and a whoop, her dad bulling his way past it as though none of it would ever catch them up. Alix couldn’t understand how it had happened. She’d been knocked back it every couple of years. Nearly losing her arm when the Alpha had overpowered her, the Dread Docs not taking kindly to her investigating them at the high school, waking up what she was and knowing that she had to go. Ralphy finding out and slipping that choke chain around her neck. She’d never thought herself pessimistic by nature by how could you not look at that string of bad luck and believe it was all just normal. Even the small things felt like they had a reek of fate about them. The truck really breaking down when she’d waylaid Derek had given her an opportunity to get closer to him, it had given her an opportunity now too. Alix wasn’t a hundred percent sure what had happened to Brady’s pack but she was willing to lay money on the fact that the Dread Doctors were involved. That meant maybe she could erase a little of her own bad karma by trying to help him out. It was just a drop in the ocean compared to what her family had earned over the years but she couldn’t do anything for them at the moment, only for herself and those who had also suffered because of the things who had taken her.
She’d watched Brady as he’d fixed the vehicle for her, not exactly tracking what he was doing, but focusing on the man instead. Good natured, even tempered, a decent bed side manner considering the hour and he wasn’t giving her too much crap for not having taken the sort of care with her truck as she should’ve done. Sucking in a breath, Alix shook her head and patted the truck. ”It doesn’t smell like roses but it doesn’t smell like that at least,” she said softly. She took more care than that, not bringing work home with her so to speak. Alix straightened up as he said he had a card machine with him. ”That’d be great, thanks.” It could’ve ended like that, with her tapping her credit card against that little machine and him walking away but she’d had to keep running her mouth. In an instant it went from pleasant chit-chat to Brady pinning her to the truck. Claws could’ve flashed, slashing at him until she backed up but Alix hadn’t done more than stiffen in his grasp. Where her eyes had flashed blue at him his flashed red and her heart kicked like a mule in her chest. Alpha. Brady was Alpha of his pack and she was a lone beta. ”No,” she rasped, her thoughts unravelling in her mind as she shoved at Brady, trying to force his hands away from her throat so that she should breathe. ”My dad is the only sibling Ralphy ever had. Seth Quinn. You’ve got the wrong man.” In her heart she knew he didn’t though. If Brady was a werewolf then it made sense that his mom maybe was too. In their blood, it ran in their blood and they’d … bile burned in Alix’s throat as she shoved at Brady again trying to get free. ”When? Your sister went missing … not your mother.” She never could see everything though, could she?

Brady was used to operating on not a huge amount of sleep so it hadn’t been as difficult for him to get up for the early morning call he’d received that morning as it could have been. Most of the night he had been out searching for Mel and the others from his pack that had gone missing and each time he felt like he was finally getting somewhere with his search, that he finally had what might prove to be a viable lead, it always ended up being a dead end. He had reached out to the friends he had left behind in New Orleans and they had assured him that Mel and the others were still in Mystic Falls somewhere but they could be any more specific than that so all he could do was carry on searching. At the same time he was trying to make sure that Liam had as close to a normal life as possible, he had told both of his siblings about the gene they had that would cause them to become werewolves if they ever took a life and he knew that neither of them wanted that. He could have continued keeping them in the dark about the curse but after their parents died he had known that he’d needed to come clean to them about it. He had unknowingly triggered his own curse when he had killed the guy that had been told to assassinate him and ever since then he had been trying to pick up the pieces. He hadn’t asked for any of this nor had he asked to become an alpha but that was the turn his life had taken and he was trying to make the best of it. He had known after his parents were killed that New Orleans was no longer safe for his family and after their previous alpha wiped out half of their pack he was pretty sure that a lot of the others had been waiting for the chance to start over so moving back to Mystic Falls had seemed like a good idea and in a way it was good to be home despite the bad things that had happened there too but there was something going on in town that he couldn’t explain, something that had resulted in Mel and the others being brought here, and he knew that he needed to find out what it was before anyone else that he cared about was taken too. Fixing vehicles was something that he was good at and it didn’t take him too long to find the problem and fix Alix’s truck but he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to it than that. The truck really was in good condition and it looked almost like someone had deliberately tampered with it, that or they had tried to fix it and only made matters worse, so the truth was that he wasn’t quite sure what to make of her just yet. “That’s true,” he nodded. Things weren’t always what they seemed and he got the impression that it was the same with Alix. Brady was about to grab the card machine he had with him so that Alix could pay there and then but something she had said had struck a chord with him and within moments he had per pinned up against the truck that he had just finished fixing for her. Her eyes flashed blue the same way that his had before he became an alpha and he nodded in understanding. There was something different about her scent now that she was so close to him, something that he hadn’t come across before, and that alone was enough to intrigue him. It wasn’t that of a werewolf and it wasn’t that of a weretiger like Julian’s either, it was something different and he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was. Alix tried to push him away but Brady’s grip around her throat was firm. She was a Quinn, a member of the same family that his mother had come from, so he knew that it couldn’t be a coincidence that she had called him to ask for help and if she thought that he was going to be an easy target for her to hunt then she had another think coming. “Are you sure about that?” he challenged, reaching into his back pocket with his free hand and pulling out his wallet. Replacing the hand that was against her throat with his arm he reached into his wallet and pulled out the blood stained photograph of three children that he had been carrying with him since he’d cleared out his family’s home. “This was left on the floor the day my parents died,” he said as he held the photo out to her but still kept his arm against her throat in case she tried anything. There were three kids in the photo, two boys and a girl, and on the back were the names Ralphy, Seth and Nancy Quinn along with a date. “My sister and a few others from my pack went missing not long after the night my parents died,” he explained. He had thought that she might know about it already but she seemed genuinely shocked so now he wasn’t so sure. “I found one of my mom’s old journals too and she wrote about falling in love with a werewolf – my dad. The rest of the family would have never understood so they ran away together and then had me.”ALIX QUINN

Hadn’t she learned her lesson with Derek? She needed to keep the personal out of what she was doing to try and prevent more people falling victims to the Dread Doctors. With Derek she’d allowed herself to get too close, what should’ve been just a warning on the road at best, a one night stand at worst, becoming the closest relationship she’d had to anybody since she’d left home. Alix felt her stomach turning as the little details she’d threaded through her act with Brady slowly coalesced into pieces big enough for Brady to put together into some sort of monstrous picture. If she’d kept her mouth shut, she could’ve just given him the warning she’d intended to and sent him on his way, looking for his sister and the others missing from his pack in her own time. It had run, that faint happy feeling she got sometimes when she allowed herself to think about the way it had been with her parents and brother when things had been good loosening her tongue to the point where it was strangling her. The little voice in the back of her head screamed. Alix wanted to tear at the hand pinning her in place and run. Even if she did though, there was no way she could tear the seeds of doubt Brady was placing in her head out of her brain.
They had killed their own sister. Somewhere deep inside of her Alix knew that her uncle and her dad were capable, it was what she’d been terrified about this whole time but hearing it now left bile burning in the back of her throat. Staring at Brady with wide eyes, Alix tried to buck her way out of his grip the way she’d once done Dante’s. He had been human, easy to fight back against, their skills perhaps closely matched, even if their healing wasn’t. Brady was different. An Alpha could snap her neck in an instant, hold her here for days. They were more powerful because of their packs. Her throat worked beneath his grip, aching as she forced herself to swallow. In the end all she could do was let her eyes slip shut and shake her head as much as he would allow. When he spoke again she forced herself to open them, not wanting to see what he held. The tears burned in her eyes the minute she saw the photo. Her dad and Ralphy, a little girl sat between them. She could’ve said it was anybody else, a cousin, a friend, but the evidence was right there. ”They were the ones…” she whispered, an inevitable sadness in her voice. Ralphy had been right about what would happen to her if he spread the news at home of what she’d become. He and her dad had slaughtered their own sister and their brother in law, just because she had decided to marry a werewolf.
The strength went out of Alix then, sagging faintly as the fight went out of her. The deaths of his parents had been relatively recent, after she’d already left home. Had her brothers taken part in it? Was the blood of their aunt on their hands. Alix shook her head, more forcefully this time as tears started to burn in her eyes. ”If that had been Ralphy and my dad they wouldn’t have made the bodies disappear. That was … someone else …” Had Ralphy somehow been behind that too. The laugh that broke out of her was just a little hysterical, more than a little hoarse. ”They can’t abide anything like that in the family. You’re like your dad was … they’d hate that. When did you…?” Brady hadn’t been changed by the Dread Doctors. From what she’d been able to tell something had happened to him when he’d been out of the country. The others though, she was certain that had been the Docs.
