There was a time when Tatia’s biggest worry had been how she was going to be both a mother and father to Lukas but now so much had changed. Her son was a grown man now, older than she was in fact, and he didn’t need her as much as he once had but they were still close nonetheless. She knew that it hadn’t been easy for him after she died but now she had the chance to make up for that and for that she was grateful. She knew that she couldn’t take back what had happened or change the fact that he had been forced to face so many things on his own but she was doing everything she could in order to be the mother that he had deserved all along. Things with both Lukas and Elijah were better than she had ever thought possible but now her concerns were much more complicated. Niklaus was back in town and he had already used not just her but two others as sacrifices in a ritual once to free the werewolf side that had been kept from him for a thousand years and now that he was back she worried that he might do something similar. She hoped that he wouldn’t and she knew that the man she had loved was still in there somewhere but something was stopping him from creating more hybrids and she just hoped that no one else would have to die in order for him to figure out what that was. One good thing had come out of the ritual at least, a strong friendship had been formed between her and Riley that day through their shared experience and their groups of friends had been brought together somewhat as well. Tatia was still getting to know Riley’s friends but from what she had seen they were a great group and they had been through so much already so she honestly hoped that the worst was over for them although considering that they all lived in Mystic Falls she knew that chances were there was still more to come. Still, no matter what happened she was confident that they would face it head on and they would do so together and it was a relief to know that there were more people out there who knew what was really going on in Mystic Falls. She had to tread so carefully around Caroline and the others who still had yet to learn the truth and it wasn’t easy but she knew that it was just one of those things. Life had certainly been easier before her eyes had been opened to the supernatural world but she could be much more careful now that she knew the truth and she knew that she wouldn’t change that for anything. Ever since the ritual she and Riley had ended up meeting up quite frequently to see how the other was doing and that day they had arranged to do just that. Tatia made sure to get to the Grill early so she could grab a table from the two of them and as a waitress arrived to take her order she asked for two cokes, one for herself and one for Riley, before settling back in her seat and waiting for him to arrive. They usually alternated where they went but that day it was early so she knew that they could always have a game of pool after they had finished. She would be the first to admit that she still wasn’t very good at the game but Stefan had been teaching her so she was getting better and she knew that she wouldn’t pass up the chance to get some more practice in if it presented itself. Singing almost tunelessly, Riley guided the jeep through the streets of Mystic Falls. In the close to two years that he’d been here he’d come to know the town like the back of his hand. The quickest route to school for those mornings where he lingered a little too long over breakfast, his favourite route out into the woods, that spot down by the falls that he liked to think of as his and Danny’s. Blue eyes raked over certain streets as he passed, heading for the Grill, Scott’s, Danny’s, the one leading to the Boarding House, and avoided others. Riley knew it could’ve been any spot in town that the witches had chosen on the night he’d been snatched, but it had been right there. The singing paused as he steered himself around to the other side of the square, the prickle of cold sweat starting at his spine making him squirm against the seat. It had been almost a year since the ritual, a year since he’d been whammied by two witches and shoved into a cave with a newly turned vampire for a couple of days before a power hungry thousand year old original vampire had torn his heart out … with Danny looking on. The fact that he’d managed to bounce back as far as he had from that, from everything that had happened since the last blissful summer in Hawaii, was a miracle as far as he was concerned but it hadn’t all disappeared in an instant once the dust had settled. All of them were still suffering the aftershocks, pulling together as a group instead of two separate packs to try and make some sense of it, to provide some support. That was a first for him, a real first, not just standing on his own two feet and trying to hold his world together like Atlas with the world on his shoulders.
Danny had been there for him through every step of it, holding him up when he needed it, listening when he needed to talk, just holding him when the words wouldn’t come. Riley knew he’d never be able to thank him enough for all he’d done or any of the others. So many in this town that he owed something to. One day he’d come up with something, he knew, it just hadn’t happened yet. Tatia was going to be on that list too. They’d not known each other really before the ritual, she’d just been another of the brunettes he’d seen around school, but afterwards they’d started their little support group and it’d been another crutch to help him through the aftermath. These meet-ups had helped, just to be able to voice what had been going on in his head to someone who’d been through exactly the same thing, just being able to relax and not worry about trying to hide the ripples still running through his life. It was a breath of fresh air and Riley sucked one of those in as he pulled up outside the Grill and hopped out of the jeep. Through the front windows of the Grill he saw Tatia, at least he was fairly sure it was Tatia and not either of her doppelgangers snagging a table. That was still taking some getting used to, all of the supernatural bizarreness here eye opening to save the least. Riley pushed through the front door of the Grill as the waitress moved away from their table. He flashed Tatia a grin as he approached, bending to kiss her cheek in greeting before he dropped into the seat opposite her. ”I’d apologise for being late but I think this time you just beat me here,” he said, laughter in his voice as he checked his watch. ”How are you doing? I take it you just ordered drinks for us.” Spending time together had taught them each other’s beverage preferences, the familiarity feeling good for him considering how little he’d been able to get to know people before.

Over the time she had been in Mystic Falls, Tatia had learned that the world had changed so much from the one that she remembered. Things naturally progressed over time but even the supernatural world itself seemed to have developed since then. There was a time when her biggest concerns had been keeping her son Lukas safe from the men who turned into wolves every time there was a full moon and wondering whether he would inherit the magic that her husband had told her ran through his family’s veins but seemed to have skipped a generation with him. It still seemed incredible to her at times that the Mikaelsons had gone on to become the world’s first vampires and that her son had found a way to make himself immortal but that was the world that she now found herself living in. Over her time in the small town she had been reunited with her son, Elijah, Rebekah and Niklaus and she had also made friends of her own. She had become a part of the ritual that Nik had completed to free his werewolf side so that Elena would be spared and even though there were times when memories of the ritual still haunted her she knew that she had done the right thing. She hadn’t wanted Elena to die for something that had started with her a thousand years ago and it hadn’t seemed fair that the young woman should die at such a young age when Tatia had already been brought back to life once. She hadn’t for one moment thought that it would happen a second time but Henrik and Lukas had been their guardian angels in that respect and to this day she was grateful to them for that. Life had gone on after the ritual just like it was supposed to and if there was one good thing that had come out of it, it was that she and the others had made some lasting friendships that day. Tatia wasn’t the only one who had been used in the ritual, Riley and Grace had too and while Grace seemed to have disappeared altogether Riley was still around and the two of them had become good friends. They were the only ones who knew what it was like to have been a part of the ritual and they had been doing everything that they could in order to support each other. It had felt good getting to know more people outside of the group of friends she had made since she started at the high school, she had befriended others outside of Stefan, Elena and that group but Riley and his friends were people that she had come to realise that she could count on if she needed them and she hoped that they felt the same. That day she had arranged to meet up with Riley at the Grill for another of their catch ups and the truth was that she was looking forward to it. She knew that at some point she was going to have to warn him that Nik was back in Mystic Falls but the truth was that she had come to really enjoy his company so she always found herself looking forward to their meet ups. It wasn’t long before he arrived and she couldn’t help but laugh as he spoke. “You got that right, I got here just long enough before you to grab a table for us,” she grinned before nodding. “I did, I figured I would play it safe and go for your usual,” she said, her smile still fixed in place as she looked over at him. “I’m doing pretty well, how about you?”RILEY PARKER

The idea of having some sort of support network, people he could talk to about all those tangled thoughts rolling through his head, would’ve made him laugh two years ago. Friends were people he connected with for just a few weeks or months at the series of schools he rolled through. Some lingered in his thoughts after her left, the bond pretty strong despite the short lived friendship, but most drifted away. Riley doubted that sort of thing was possible anymore. Meeting Danny in Hawaii had been a watershed moment, the tumble of things that had happened in the time since an avalanche that had left him fetched up at the moment of the mountain stunned but fundamentally changed. Mystic Falls had killed him in a way, but it had also given him so much life. Studying the face of the thousand-year-old girl sitting opposite Riley knew that he wasn’t the only one that had happened for. They’d been through something few had ever experienced, a trip to the other side and back, a death that couldn’t be cured with just a shot from a defibrillator or a little CPR. Their hearts had been torn out by a vampire whose werewolf side had been locked away by his witch mother to protect him and everybody else around him. Now that idea would’ve left him laughing two years ago too, laughing and questioning whether the teller of the tale needed a little trip to a psych ward and a goodly dose of Haldol. These days that sort of thing was honestly as normal and everyday as a trip to a local restaurant to meet a friend for something to eat and a catch up.
It was a normal and everyday that had been working for him for months though, that weight that had been on his shoulders lifting enough that he felt like he was just a normal teenager most of the time. One who prided himself on his time keeping and the fact that he had people who knew him well enough to order for him now. His own parents were lousy at both but they were a world away from here now and it was Tatia he was grinning at across the table. ”I’m gonna have to up my game the next time and try and leave home a little earlier. I got a little caught up in the French homework that’s due tomorrow.” He’d wanted to get it finished up so that when he left here he could head over to Danny’s place without feeling an ounce of guilt for putting a couple of hours with his boyfriend over the homework that was greasing his path to college. ”Safe’s always the best way to go,” he mused. ”Although now I might have to go with the completely unusual on the menu just to balance it all out. I bet there’s something completely awful like liver and onions on the menu.” Not that he was ever usually the unusual or adventurous type. He liked his settled ways here now, knowing that he wasn’t going to have to move tomorrow … or maybe find himself on the receiving end of another psychopath’s violence. That had happened twice already and he wasn’t planning on it being third time lucky. Riley’s smile softened slightly as he toyed with the edge of the menu. ”I’m doing OK. My parents popped back at the weekend so I thought it might’ve gotten a little rocky for a while but … it wasn’t too bad. I can’t tell if that was cause of some change in me or them.” It was far more likely the latter but Riley knew he couldn’t pigeonhole things that way. Everything was a two way street, including his relationship with them.

Tatia knew that the little support group she and Riley had formed might seem a little strange to some but he was one of only two other people who knew what it was like to be a part of the ritual Niklaus had performed so spending time with him helped. She knew that she had plenty of friends around if she needed them but Riley had been through the same thing that she had and he too had come out of it the other side so needless to say it helped to be around him. Ever since the ritual they had made sure to catch up regularly and if she was honest it was something that Tatia always enjoyed doing. Riley was a good guy and she was beyond glad that he and Danny had another chance at happiness. The same was true for her and Elijah, now that the ritual was over there wasn’t anything standing in their way and they were happy together, for some reason she just couldn’t seem to shake the feeling that it might not last. Before he and his siblings became vampires they had been happy but that happiness had been ripped away from them by Esther’s fear of losing another child. If she was honest Tatia couldn’t really blame her, had something happened to Lukas and she’d had other children she could potentially lose then she knew that she probably would have done something just as drastic to keep her loved ones safe but the costs of immortality were ones she wasn’t sure that Esther had really thought about before casting the spell. Elijah had killed her once but she honestly believed that he was a different person now. He had been willing to put his life and freedom on the line just to try and stop her from being a part of the ritual and that was something that she hadn’t expected. In that respect he was still the same Elijah that she had known a thousand years ago and she liked to believe that the Nik she had once known was still buried in there somewhere too. He had offered her the chance to change her mind before the ritual but she hadn’t taken it, instead choosing to make sure that Elena was safe, and it was a decision that she stood by even now. One good thing had come out of it at least and that was her friendship with Riley. “I forgot about that, I haven’t even started it yet,” Tatia admitted. While she actually enjoyed going to school the homework was something that she would much rather do without although she knew that unfortunately that wasn’t an option. Thankfully French was something that Elijah was good at so she knew that she could always enlist his help if she needed it. “I wouldn’t be surprised. You should give it a try if you’re feeling brave,” she laughed. The truth was that having options when it came to what to eat was a luxury in Tatia’s eyes, while she was growing up it had been a case of eating whatever they could find or buy with what little money they had but things had changed so much since then and as far as she was concerned that was definitely a good thing. As Riley spoke again, Tatia took a sip of her drink before studying him carefully for a moment. “Perhaps you’ve become more tolerant after everything you’ve been through but I’m glad things were better with them anyway,” she admitted, knowing how difficult things had been for Riley with his parents at times in the past. “Where are they now?”RILEY PARKER

Had they told anybody in the Grill that this little talk was almost a twelve step program for hybrid releasing ritual survivors they’d have been laughed out of the place. To anybody who hadn’t been at the quarry being brought back to life after having only been dead a few minutes wouldn’t have seemed so bad, even if they’d believed that it’d actually happened. To anybody who’d been there, anybody close to those who’d been hurt, anybody who’d been at threat themselves from it, Riley knew the idea wouldn’t have seemed so easy to shrug off. Both he and Tatia had been painfully aware of every moment trapped behind the rings of fire, along with Grace they’d felt Niklaus Mikaelson’s hand punch through their rib cages and squeeze the life out of them. They’d all been to that other side and been brought back by people who’d given their all to save the three of them. If someone didn’t need a little support after all of that then he’d have called them crazy. You didn’t just bounce back from that sort of thing. Even if you could push it to the back of your mind constantly and act as though it didn’t happen the ripples that had spread out from that tragedy would catch up to you and trip you in the end. Having been caught out that way once in Bear Creek, keeping what had happened at the lake to himself until it all exploded out in his first burst of werewolf fuelled anger, Riley knew he didn’t want it to happen again. He had people to talk to now, people he could relax with, people who’d shore him up if one of those ripples threatened to toss him on his ass. People he didn’t even have to discuss the nightmare of that day with, they were just there regardless.
The topic would always be there for him and Tatia if either one of them needed or wanted to discuss it but it wasn’t their immediate go to topic when they met now. School usually took that biscuit, school or the people they’d been blessed enough to have come into their lives and love them. Even homework was worth all of that, although it still left him groaning at times. The necessary evil was going to have to be picked up again tomorrow, when the next round would have piled up on the kitchen table. Riley grimaced faintly at Tatia’s admission. ”It wasn’t bad but let’s just say Mr de la Salle likes to get a little tricky. Elijah’s got to be able to speak French though right?” After all those centuries alive languages had to be something the Original had picked up. Danny probably could’ve done the homework in his sleep, he could probably have already graduated but he’d stuck with his friends instead. That was something he was so proud of him for. Glancing down the menu, Riley grimaced and then looked up to grin at Tatia. ”I think I might just give the organs a miss and stick with a burger instead,” he admitted ruefully. ”Maybe I’ll just toss a fried egg on it and call that brave enough.” At least this wasn’t something he had to cook for himself, although he managed the basics just fine thanks to years of having to look after himself. His parents hadn’t been any more present to look out for him since they’d settled in Mystic Falls but it was something he’d come to terms with. Biting the inside of his lower lip Riley bobbed his head. ”I definitely have. I think it helps having other things in my life to focus on rather than just the two of them. I still haven’t … come out to them but as long as things are going kinda well, it’s probably best not to.” Blue eyes narrowed as Riley glanced up at the ceiling and counted off days. ”I think it’s Germany this week. Berlin?” He chuckled over his own uncertainty. The country, it appeared, was no longer big enough for his parents. They’d gone international for a week or two at least.

From the moment she had first woken up in the woods outside of Mystic Falls Tatia had known that the world had changed a lot from the one that she was born into but she never could have imagined just how true that was. Even now there were times when it still seemed incredible to her that she had been brought back to life a thousand years after she had died but she knew now that she wasn’t the only one. Henrik had been through the same thing but he had been taken in by Crowley and made to do his bidding for the last eight years. Tatia couldn’t even begin to imagine what that must have been like and it made her feel grateful for the fact that her own return had been completely different. It had taken her a while to come to terms with what had happened but with the help of Elena, Stefan and Elijah she had managed to get through it. Learning that Lukas was still alive after all had helped immensely and it had to be said that Tatia liked the way that her life had turned out now. She didn’t know what was going to happen in the future and being a part of Niklaus’ ritual had made her even more aware than ever just how lucky she was that she had even been given a second chance at life let alone a third and she knew that she definitely wasn’t going to waste it. She didn’t know what the future was going to hold, after all her boyfriend and son were both immortal and being a doppelganger meant that she could easily be more of a target than ever but for now she was settled and she knew that that was more than she could have asked for. The memories of what had happened during the ritual were ones that Tatia was certain she would always carry with her but one good thing had come out of it at least – it had brought her friends and the gang from Beacon Hills closer together than ever before. She and Riley were the ones who had been used by Niklaus to break the curse that Esther had placed on him a thousand years before but they weren’t the only ones who had been affected that day. Their friends had had no choice but to stand by and watch them die, powerless to do anything other than watch, and she honestly hoped that they would never end up being put in a similar position again. She knew that it was a possibility given that Nik was back in Mystic Falls but she didn’t know what his next move was going to be so she knew that she might as well enjoy the time until then. “Elijah is fluent which is good in a way but I like figuring things out on my own,” Tatia admitted. She knew that Elijah would help her in an instant if she asked him to but it was her decision to attend high school with the others and she knew that it wouldn’t feel right to cut corners so she was doing her best. “Now you mention it a burger does sound pretty good although I don’t think I’ll be as daring as you,” Tatia grinned. “Are you ready to order?” All of the food now was different to what she had grown up with but it had to be said that she had a soft spot for a burger from the Grill every now and then so she knew that it would be silly to pass up the chance to have one now. Stefan had taught her to cook during the time that she had been living at the Boarding House but she knew that she still had a lot to learn in that respect. “Your parents might surprise you and be understanding but I imagine it must be difficult to talk to them if they’re not around,” she admitted. Riley’s life was so different to the way that hers had been while she was growing up, she had spent her life surrounded by her loved ones and she knew that she wouldn’t have had it any other way. How far he’d come from the kid who’d only had himself to truly rely on. There’d been other friends, coming and going in his life from the moment he’d started kindergarten, but coming and going honestly had been the operative words there. In a pinch he doubted he could’ve gone to any of them and known they would have his back no matter what. Danny had been the first person that Riley knew he could’ve said that about and even then, his dad had divided the two of them, dragging him away from Hawaii when the whim to move on had hit him. It had been sheer luck that the one place he’d picked on the map to try and settle in for a couple of years had been the one tiny town in the whole of the country that Danny and his friends had been lured to. That was a word that he was absolutely comfortable using for it all. Thinking it all through, talking it all through with his friends dozens of times over, had concreted the concept in his head. Like Danny had explained about the nemeton, something in Mystic Falls had been drawing the supernatural here for centuries. Maybe that had been what had drawn him to it from Oregon but, even if not, it was a lure to things and people now. A part of him wished it wouldn’t have been for the Mikaelsons, in the same way he’d wished at first that the Alpha in Oregon hadn’t picked those woods on that night. Both men had scarred him in their ways, leaving marks on him, echoes in him, that wouldn’t fade, but despite it looking like it wasn’t at times, the pain he’d gone through had all been worth it.
The bond he had with people didn’t need to be defined by that pain. His relationship with Danny had been going from strength to strength, his place in the pack helping him gain control over who he was. To anybody in the Grill who didn’t have a clue about what either of them were, he and Tatia would’ve appeared to be nothing more than typical High School kids. Riley half smiled at the thought. How many would have realized that ‘Elijah’ was a thousand year old vampire, fluent in French probably because he’d spent decades, if not centuries travelling there. Raising his hand, Riley scrubbed it back the short hair at the nape of his neck. ”I’m the same but when it comes to French I cave sometimes. I might have to steal your boyfriend at some point.” There was a teasing note in his voice, a trace of laughter that he wouldn’t have managed when he’d first come to town and had tried to settle in at yet another school. All of this had been impossible that first day, something as simple as a restaurant full of hungry people stressful enough to have him on the edge of wolfing out. Tilting his head, Riley clucked his tongue at the woman opposite him. ”Don’t knock it until you try it. I got to like it in Hawaii. They put fried eggs on everything. Sure.” Nodding at Tatia’s question, Riley closed the menu. His decision had been made before he’d walked in, it always seemed to be. Thanks to his parents’ absence, the Grill was one of the places he’d spent a hell of a lot of time eating in. He’d tried to come to terms with the way they were in the wake of the ritual but wasn’t entirely at the point of forgiveness yet. Riley sighed, tapping his fingers against the edge of the menu. ”Absolutely. They barely even pick up the phone. If it’s just my dad in person it’s not entirely impossible but when he’s around my mom, you can’t say anything to either of them without it being misconstrued. I just don’t know how either of them is going to wrap their brains around this. Did your parents … know of any of this?” Tatia had been a thing, as he and the others were but magic had been out in the open then, Elijah had told him that much.

The idea of being brought back to life a thousand years after she had died and having so many friends around her who were a part of the supernatural world never would have crossed Tatia’s mind before she died the first time. Her life had been so much simpler back then, sure she had been a single mother raising her son alone after her husband died but she’d had her parents, her siblings and Elijah around and she couldn’t deny that she was happy back then. Ever since she was brought back things had become increasingly more complicated but she knew that she wouldn’t want to take back the way that her life was. There were certain events in it that she wished hadn’t happened like she wished that she and the others hadn’t had to die in the ritual to free Niklaus’ werewolf side but they were all back where they belonged now and for that she truly was thankful. She had made her peace with dying, she had known that it was going to happen when she had decided to give herself up to Niklaus so that Elena could life, but she should have known that Lukas wouldn’t let her go that easily. Instead he and Henrik had worked together to bring back not just her but the others who had died in the ritual as well and now they all had the chance to live their lives to the full. She hadn’t seen Grace since then but Riley was someone that she had grown pretty close to after their shared experience during the ritual and she liked to spend time with him when she could. Whether or not the rest of her friends understood the strong friendship that had built between them she wasn’t sure but it didn’t matter. They got along well and they spent most of their time in different circles so it was easy to be open about whatever was going on without having to worry. Right now they were just two high school kids catching up and avoiding doing homework, or at least that was probably how it looked to anyone who didn’t know who they really were anyway. In reality they were those things but they were also so much more. Riley was a werewolf and she was a doppelganger who had died a thousand years ago and had been brought back by the King of Hell as a bargaining chip against one of the most powerful families in the world. It was a lot but they managed it and she knew that she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m sure I could talk Elijah into helping although I think Stefan is pretty fluent too,” she offered with a smile, knowing that he might be the less intimidating of the two as far as Riley was concerned. She loved Elijah but she knew that he could come across as a bit imposing at times although she only ever saw the gentle side of him when they were together, the side that she was pretty sure that very few others got to see. “I still think I’ll pass. Bacon on a burger is definitely worth it but you haven’t sold me on an egg just yet,” she laughed, glancing quickly at the menu once more before setting it aside once she’d made up her mind. Placing her order, she thanked the waitress and turned her attention back to Riley once he’d done the same. “At least you have your friends to support you,” she said gently, offering Riley a reassuring smile as she looked over at him. “My parents knew there was a chance that when Lukas grew up he might have magic but none of us knew for sure. My husband’s family had magic but it skipped a generation with him, he was born without it. None of this was as well known before, every full moon all of the people in my village had to go into hiding for that one night when the men turned into wolves and there were a few who had magic but that was it. That’s actually how Henrik died, his curiosity got the better of him and he wanted to see the men turn into wolves for himself,” she explained, knowing that Henrik wouldn’t mind her filling Riley in on that part of his past. Things were so different back then and she couldn’t deny that she much preferred the way things were more open now. RILEY PARKER

The true miracles that went on this town weren’t the supernatural sort. Barring the fact that Niklaus had killed three people to make it happen, the fact that someone could break a spell that had shackled him a thousand years before to become the world’s first vampire-werewolf was kind of miraculous. Being turned into a shapeshifter when you had started out as a werewolf. Hell, coming back to life for the first time a thousand years after you died. All miracles in the eyes of a kid who hadn’t had any idea about any of this before he was bitten. No. What was the true miracle here was that any of them were sane after all of that. It was a miracle that they could just be normal teenagers, getting an education, falling in love for the first, and in his case, hopefully the last time, worrying about exams, grabbing a burger at a Grill with a friend after school. It was normal and Riley had been so sure he was never going to get to that point. Even after he’d moved to Mystic Falls there’d been that fear that he was caught up in a rollercoaster he couldn’t stop. Things were spinning out of control and then Niklaus’ witches had taken him and hidden him away in that tomb with Grace. They’d huddled there together, anticipating the worst and finding it afterwards but when he’d woken up it had been with a sort of clarity. He could either let what had happened shatter his life or he could pick himself up, dust himself off and work towards that life he’d always wanted. Riley wasn’t sure how successful he’d up but for now this was so much more than he had before and for him that was absolutely a success.
School perhaps wasn’t quite as much of one but he was working his ass off there too. Science had always been the easy side of things for him but if he wanted to get into Whitmore, and honestly, he so did, then he needed to get to the point where he wasn’t struggling with any of his subjects. He hadn’t had hundreds of years of life to build up his knowledge in the same way others had, it didn’t mean he couldn’t exploit their talents though. Riley’s grin grew less sheepish as he shot it back at Tatia. ”Uh huh. So I wouldn’t be stealing your boyfriend, just Stefan,” he said with a chuckle. He wouldn’t do either but a little study group honestly might be a decent idea. All of them backing each other up, the way they’d tried to do since the ritual. There was trust there, a solid bond … although it might not’ve gone so far as to convince Tatia that the fried egg on top of a burger was genius, not insanity. ”You’ll just have to try a bit of mine,” he coaxed. ”Or convince Elijah to take you to Hawaii on vacation. That’s worth it too.” That had been the best decision his dad had ever made. Honestly life changing. It was a shame his dad wasn’t always that way. Riley dropped his menu as Tatia smiled over at home, folding his arms easily over his chest instead. ”It sounds like your family was open minded at least,” he said softly. ”I guess if everybody knew that the men turned into wolves there was really no mystery over the supernatural. My parents wouldn’t believe it existed outside of Hollywood.” His throat worked at the thought of how Henrik had died. Blue eyes settled on Tatia’s face. ”That’s why they were changed, wasn’t it?” There was a reason for it, he knew. One that meant he couldn’t entirely condemn Niklaus Mikaelson for what had happened to him. Some part of was still afraid of the hybrid, so angry at him too, but he hadn’t allowed it to overwhelm him.

Ever since the ritual Tatia had been making a point to catch up with Riley as often as she could and theirs had become a friendship that she cherished. The two of them and Grace were the only ones who knew what it was like to go through something like the ritual and come out of it the other side but Grace had disappeared after the ritual so she and Riley had been doing their best to support each other ever since then. They had their friends and loved ones around them as well but it wasn’t quite the same and there were things that Tatia had shared with Riley about that day that she hadn’t felt like she could share with Elijah or Lukas so it had helped having someone in her life who had been through the same thing. She knew that their friends hadn’t known each other too well before the ritual but if some good had come of it then it was the fact that their friends had become friends and she was pretty sure that they were all a lot better off for that. Things seemed to be changing pretty quickly in Mystic Falls at the moment and Tatia knew that they were sure to change even more after graduation but for the time being at least she was happy and she was enjoying what was left of her senior year and she wanted to make sure that Riley was as well. She knew that things hadn’t been easy for him with Danny and that they had already been parted once before they’d both moved to Mystic Falls but now he seemed genuinely happy and the truth was that she was happy for both of them. It felt like it had been a while since the two of them had last caught up even though in reality it hadn’t been that long and she was glad that they had the chance to catch up now. They often saw each other around school but it was completely different being able to catch up away from the place and she knew to make the most of it while it lasted. She wasn’t sure what was going to happen when they graduated, the future always seemed to be so uncertain but she hoped that in time they would figure things out. Tatia was already thinking about heading to college with the others but the truth was she wasn’t sure what she would end up studying if she did go to Whitmore with everyone else. That was what scared her the most but she had never been the kind of person to let her fear consume her so she knew that she needed to figure things out while she could. “You’d probably have more luck with Stefan, to be honest,” Tatia admitted with a laugh. She was never quite sure how Elijah felt being around teenagers after living for as long as she had and she felt guilty enough about trying to talk him into going to the prom with her so she knew that she didn’t want to push her luck if she could help it. “I might be open to trying a bit of yours,” Tatia conceded, knowing that Riley probably wouldn’t give up until she did. “I love the idea of travelling but flying scares the life out of me. It took me a while to get used to getting in a car,” she admitted. There was so much that she’d had to adjust to after she was brought back and even though she was used to most of it by now there were certain things that she had yet to experience and those were still a little scary to say the least. “They tried to be and I know they looked after Lukas after I died but they wouldn’t have been able to help him with his magic the way he would have needed it.” The truth was that she wouldn’t have been able to either but she would have tried nonetheless. “Some people just don’t want to admit that any of this is real. It is a lot to take in after all,” Tatia shrugged before nodding as Riley asked if Henrik’s death was the reason why the Mikaelsons were changed. “Yes, it is. Their parents already lost one child before they moved here and the loss of another broke them. They wanted to find a way to make sure that they wouldn’t go through that again and Esther used my blood to turn her children into vampires. It was only when Nik lost control and killed someone that it became known that Mikael wasn’t his father after all and his werewolf side was locked away for a thousand years,” she explained. She knew that her relationship with the Mikaelsons would always be better than most and they liked their privacy but Riley had been a part of the ritual to free Nik’s werewolf side so it was important to her that he knew the reason why. He could’ve spoken about homework with anybody, joked about stealing boyfriends for help with it or grabbed lunch with anybody but it wouldn’t have been the same. Riley had friends now, more than he’d ever had in his life and he cherished each and every one. He had Danny, who he loved more than he’d ever known it was possible to love somebody. Every single one of them would’ve been there for him if he’d called out and asked if they wanted to meet. Open as he was now Riley knew he could’ve talked to them about just about everything on his mind, except for what he and Tatia weren’t exactly saying now. After the ritual, over the months since, Riley had spoken to Danny about what had happened that day, in the last couple of days before it, when he and Grace had been trapped in that tomb and he’d spent almost every minute or every day praying that she wouldn’t lose control of her hunger and tear his throat out before the others found him. Some part of him hadn’t wanted to put all of that weight on Danny though. He hadn’t been the only one to suffer that day. Danny had watched as Niklaus Mikaelson had torn his heart out. While he’d been on the other side Danny and Stiles and other members of the pack had been there with his dead body, not sure if there was any way somebody could get him back. He hadn’t been the only one hurt by it all and Riley knew that he didn’t want Danny to have to keep reliving that day as he got his feelings off of his chest. His boyfriend would’ve done it, he knew he would’ve listened to every word, but to keep doing it again and again wasn’t fair. It made him glad for Tatia, for the two of them to be able to come together and go through all of that without necessarily rehashing it every single time.
Riley found comfort in the laughter that rumbled in his chest as Tatia steered him away from getting homework help from Elijah. It had to be weird being a thousand year old vampire, in love with a girl who’d been close to your age then but who was now technically a thousand years younger. Surrounded by eighteen year olds. ”Yoou’re probably right,” he admitted with a nod. ”It’s gotta be a little weird for him sometimes.” One thing he wouldn’t want to do was make it weirder. If he really needed the help there were others. That was the joy of their friendships now, that network of people. Riley did a fist pump in the air as he gradually talked Tatia around to trying a little of his burger. ”That’s gotta be weird too,” he admitted, bobbing his head lightly. ”I practically grew up in cars and on planes. My mom and dad, they never liked the idea of settling. I’d say that flying’s just like being in a bigger car but honestly … it isn’t. It’s incredible though if you ever find yourself brave enough and have the opportunity. Take it.” As much as he didn’t want to be away from the town now, Riley knew that he was blessed to have seen that world already. A thousand years ago it never would’ve even been dreamt of.
Life had been different for them all back then. ”They were there for him though.” Riley reached out a hand to squeeze hers as he said it. His throat worked as Tatia said that the supernatural was a lot to take in. ”You’re preaching to the choir there,” he admitted hoarsely. His had been a brutal introduction to it. The Mikaelsons had obviously known about it all along but he doubted any of them could’ve predicted what had happened. Riley felt his hatred towards Niklaus ease just the tiniest bit at the story. ”It’s hard for us,” he admitted hoarsely. ”Even if you’re … the other kind … it’s like you’re genetically predisposed to your temper just slipping through your fingers. If he had that on top of the hunger … It was his mother that did that too?” he asked, meaning the locking away of Niklaus’ werewolf side. Maybe if he’d had the chance to have his own locked away he would’ve taken it at first but now Riley couldn’t imagine not being what he was.

Tatia had chosen to be a part of the ritual that Nik had been determined to perform so that Elena’s life could be spared. She’d had the chance to make that decision but it wasn’t like that for the others. Riley and Grace had never asked to become a part of it and she hadn’t wanted anyone else to have to die but there wasn’t any way that she would have been able to stop Nik anyway, nor was she sure that she would have done even if she could. While it was true that she wished that Riley and Grace could have been spared she also knew that Nik had had to live with a part of himself locked away for a thousand years so the truth was that she couldn’t blame him for wanting to free that side of himself. He never should have been forced to live his life like that and it was her blood that had been used to bind his werewolf side so it had only seemed right that it was also her blood that freed it too. She wished that things could have been different but that was all over now anyway. Henrik and Lukas had been on hand to bring all three of them back to life and she couldn’t be more grateful to the two of them for that. She hadn’t known that they were planning on doing that and she had resigned herself to her fate but she had been given another chance at life and so had the two of them as well. It was a chance that she was determined not to waste and she hoped that the same was true of Riley and Grace. A friendship had formed between her and Riley that day after everything that they had been through together but Grace had disappeared and she hadn’t seen the girl since so all she could do was try and make sure that Riley was doing ok and she knew that she wasn’t going to argue with being able to spend some time with her friend while she did that. “I think it is but he doesn’t seem to mind too much,” Tatia admitted with a shrug. She wasn’t sure that Elijah would say anything even if he did mind but if it bothered him then he had been keeping quiet about it and each time she tried to get him to talk he always promised that everything was fine so she knew that she just had to trust that he would tell her if there was ever a problem. “I’ll remember that. I would love to see the world but flying has always scared me,” she said gently. A lot of things had done at first after she was brought back and she had managed to get over those fears but there was something about flying through the air that just didn’t seem right to her even now so the truth was that she wasn’t really in a hurry to give it a try even if it meant that she and Elijah wouldn’t get to travel anytime soon. “They were for a while and after they died a woman named Athena stepped in. It wasn’t the same though, I should have been there for him,” she said, knowing that that was a feeling that she would never be able to shake. She didn’t blame Elijah or anyone else for the fact that she wasn’t able to be there for Lukas because she knew that it wasn’t really anyone’s fault but she still regretted the fact that she wasn’t there to watch over her son the way she should have been. “Exactly. His siblings all have the bloodlust and heightened emotions to contend with but Nik has the temper as well. I think that’s why he became the way he is.” She knew that nothing could excuse his actions but she hoped that by explaining them Riley would at least understand what had happened a little better. As he asked if he was Esther who locked Nik’s werewolf side away, Tatia nodded. “It was. She always tried to protect him and perhaps she thought that she was doing that by locking it away but it only made things worse.”RILEY PARKER

Travelling around for so much of his life had always left him feeling kinda worldly. While other kids in elementary school talked about spending their summers riding around their neighbour on their bikes, playing ball in the park, maybe they got to go to the beach with their parents for a few days. A lot of summers he had ended up in New York for at least part of the time, getting whole weeks with his grandparents and Terra, the rest of the time … he’d been places most kids couldn’t dream of. Of course, most of the time then he wasn’t dreaming of seeing anymore of them. He’d spent so much time in the truck with his dad, driving across the country and back, flying to a half dozen countries across the world when demand for his parents’ work got big enough. Riley knew he’d packed more moves, more experiences into those years than most people twice his age and he’d hated much of it. Kids shouldn’t have had to go through all of that, they deserved some structure, to be able to put down some roots, make friends, attend the same school for more than just a semester. That stability meant more than most people knew. When you’d rudely had the scales cast from your eyes and a whole world beneath that one you thought you knew so well revealed it took time to adjust. The trouble that had plagued him from Bear Creek to Mystic Falls had eased away like a dark cloud dissipating and one step at a time he was getting to realise that maybe not being as worldly as he thought maybe wasn’t a bad thing after all.
After all he could’ve been a thousand year old vampire, one who’d seen everything and yet ended up in this small Virginian town. Riley smiled at Tatia as she admitted that Elijah didn’t seem to mind the role he was playing these days. Considering that he had Tatia back after all that time maybe anything else that happened didn’t really matter overmuch. Reaching out, he patted Tatia’s hand gently over her fear of flying. ”There are always other ways of travelling too. Boats are pretty amazing, although I wouldn’t recommend cruises, way too big and busy.” Other than engines he really didn’t think boats had changed overly much since Tatia’s day. That mattered when everything else in your world was so different to everything you thought you knew. As a child Tatia’s son’s world as he knew it must have shattered when he’d lost his mom. Riley smiled sadly, shaking his head. ”I know if there was any chance you could’ve been there for him you would have been and I think he’d know that too. You guys have your second chance now.” They almost hadn’t though, had they? It had taken Henrik and Tatia’s son to get them both back after Niklaus had used them both to get what he wanted. Maybe there was a reason why he’d done it, a good reason, but it didn’t erase the fact that three innocent people had died to make it happen. Riley scraped his thumb over the side of his drink glass. ”The temper I get,” he said softly, hating that him and Klaus had something in common. ”After I was first bitten it was impossible to control mine.” And he hadn’t had a well meaning mother who could lock that away to try and keep him safe. Riley went silent as the waitress suddenly appeared at their table and set their food down. ”I imagine that was all she wanted to do. Do … do you know if it’s made it easier now?” And wasn’t that a roundabout way of asking if she’d had any sort of contact with Klaus.

Tatia hadn’t known what her life would end up looking like when she had been taken to the Boarding House and offered a place there. Before that she had been living on her own out in the woods and it had been a lonely existence to say the least but it had given her the chance to get her head around everything that she had learned from Elijah the day that he had found her at the side of the road after she was brought back to life. She hadn’t known back then that she would end up forgiving him or that she would find her son again but both of those things had happened and she knew that her life was much better because of it. She had found a real home at the Boarding House and slowly but surely she had found herself making friends in her own right as well. She and Riley had been through something awful together but they had come out of it the other side and a strong friendship had been formed that day. In a way Tatia wished that Grace was still around so that they could offer her some support too but she seemed to be dealing with things in her own way and Tatia knew that she had to respect that. She and Riley had at least had the benefit of knowing about the supernatural world beforehand and Tatia had chosen to be a part of the ritual so that Elena wouldn’t have to die but she wasn’t sure that Grace had known about any of this beforehand. Tatia hadn’t known that Henrik and Lukas would bring them all back but now she knew not to underestimate her son again. She had told him what she was planning even though he had already lost her once and even though he had said that he understood her decision and respect it, it turned out that he’d had something else planned all along and she couldn’t be more grateful to him for that. Now she had the chance to live her life the way she wanted to and with the people that she wanted in it and that was something that she knew she wasn’t going to take for granted. She loved the life that she had built for herself in Mystic Falls and she knew that she wanted to make the most of it for however long it was sure to last. “I’m not sure I would trust a boat any more than I would a plane,” Tatia admitted. Boats were around even when she was younger but if she was honest she had always preferred the thought of keeping her feet on dry land. “Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be give one of them a try,” she admitted with a shrug. She knew that Mikael, Esther and Finn had travelled to the New World in a boat before she was even born so she knew that they were safe, probably even more so now than they ever could have been back then, but it had taken her a while to get used to cars so she knew that it was going to be the same for any other mode of transport as well. She knew that she wanted to experience as much as she could, though, so she knew that sooner or later she would have to try and conquer her fear so that she could get to see more of the world than what Mystic Falls had to offer. “We do. I wasn’t there for him while he was growing up but I’m so proud of the man he has become,” she admitted. Lukas reminded her of his father in so many ways but there were also times when she saw herself in him and the truth was that she couldn’t be any prouder of the man he had become. As Riley asked about Niklaus, Tatia felt a smile work its way across her face. “He seems to be. Now he is finally free to be the man that he was supposed to be even if that wasn’t who his parents wanted him to be,” she admitted with a shrug. Mikael hadn’t known about Esther’s infidelity before that, nor had any of their children. All any of them had known was that Niklaus had born the worst of Mikael’s abuse but now they at least had an explanation why. “How are you doing with all of this?”RILEY PARKER
