Stiles was antsy. Well, antsier than normal. That constant tic and pop of nerves under his skin and the erratic firing of neurons in his brain was something that he’d grown used to over the last decade and for the most part, could at least keep under control with the constant haze of Adderall. The crackle of what felt like oncoming doom in the air in Mystic Falls was harder to deal with though. It was like that taste of ozone in the air before a huge storm would hit, that odd quiet that left you feeling like something was holding its breath before it knocked you flat on your ass. It had felt that way a time or two in Beacon Hills but somehow, it Mystic Falls it was worse. Standing in front of his closet, the strings of his demon hunting research tangled around him like a spiderweb, Stiles told himself he was probably just feeling it because of the ritual last summer, a ghost of that loss hanging around. Oh how wrong he’d been. The storm hadn’t hit yet, the pressure was still building by the feel of things, but the big black cloud on the horizon had started to make itself known and it had a name … Niklaus Mikaelson. Those two little words had echoed in his brain the moment he’d heard that the newly minted hybrid had trailed back to town, dead werewolves strewn across the country in his wake. Klaus was back and trouble was sure to follow eventually.
He needed to know what the guy was up to, Stiles told himself as he slammed his locker door shut, and he couldn’t find that out on his own. Last year, when Scott, Lydia and Danny had found out what he was up to, heading out to hunt the demon who’d been inhabiting Allison when she’d come back, they’d wrung a promise out of him that he wouldn’t go doing this dangerous crap on his own. In his defence, he hadn’t, but it didn’t mean he had any intention of making them all targets for Klaus now, not when the Original Hybrid had already killed Danny’s boyfriend, Riley. They couldn’t guarantee they would always have Henrik or Lukas around to go magicking them back to life. They couldn’t guarantee Niklaus wouldn’t just turn that evil gaze on them out of fun either … which meant he had to get proactive and get in touch with the little network of people caught up in that ritual who’d started to band together afterwards. The girl they’d turned into a vampire seemed to have up and disappeared on them but Tatia had people around them and they had been willing to pull together after what had happened. Heading for the quad, guessing he’d find some of them there, Stiles ended up pulling off a fist pump at the door. Stefan Salvatore, perfect. ”Just the man I was looking for,” Stiles shot at him as he dumped his bag on the floor and dropped onto the bench next to Stefan. ”You got a few minutes for a talk?” Stiles airquoted the word, brows waggling as he looked at the guy beside him pointedly.

It had been quiet in Mystic Falls ever since he had returned from his time away with Klaus while they tried to find a way to create hybrids but something told Stefan that this was just the calm before the storm. While they were travelling the country trying to find the key to creating Klaus’ army Stefan had been compelled to turn his humanity off and when he had finally made his way back to Mystic Falls he had been a completely different person. Now his humanity was back on and he had managed to pick up the pieces of his life but rumour had it that Klaus was back in town even though he had yet to reach out so the truth was that Stefan wasn’t sure just how long the peace was going to last for. The last time his former friend had been in town Klaus had ended up killing three innocent people so that he could free his werewolf side and countless more had died while they had travelled afterwards. Stefan had far too much blood on his hands already and he knew that the last thing he wanted was any more so if he could then he knew that he wanted to stay out of Klaus’ way as much as possible. Of course he knew that that was going to be pretty much impossible since some of his friends were likely going to find themselves in the hybrid’s crosshairs but it was something that he could try and do at least. Stefan hadn’t just left Mystic Falls with Klaus in order to save Damon’s life, there had been another reason as well. Tatia, Riley and Grace had all been used in the ritual to free Klaus’ werewolf side and all three of them had been brought back to life afterwards by Henrik and Lukas and the truth was that Stefan didn’t know what would happen to them when Klaus found out that they were alive and that scared him. He didn’t know Grace that well but Tatia was like family and Riley had become a friend to him so he knew that the last thing he wanted was for any of them to get hurt. Katherine had told him that perhaps doppelganger blood had something to do with the fact that every attempt Klaus had made to try and create more hybrids had failed but in the back of Stefan’s mind he had wondered whether perhaps the fact that all three of them had been resurrected might play a part in it as well and he knew that he wouldn’t put it past Klaus to kill them again just to test that theory. He knew that he had to hope that it wouldn’t come to that but the truth was that he just wasn’t sure. Either way he knew that he wanted to protect the three of them along with everyone else that he cared about at all costs and he knew that Scott and the others wanted the same too. Everything that had happened had brought their two groups closer together and for that Stefan was glad. It was also for that reason that Stefan wasn’t at all surprised when he spotted Stiles approaching as he sat at a bench in the quad working on a piece of homework. As Stiles asked if they could talk and made sure to air quote the word, Stefan couldn’t help but chuckle. “Sure, what’s on your mind?” he asked his friend as he closed his book so that he could give Stiles his undivided attention. In more ways than most people knew Mystic Falls and Beacon Hills were similar. They were painfully small, tiny blips on a map filled with them. The people living there appreciated the sleepier pace of life, blithely believing that their Peyton Place of a home was a safe place to raise their families. Most didn’t see that violent underbelly, hadn’t seen just how each of the towns could draw in the supernatural and leave the unlucky broken and bleeding for the authorities to find … or not. When they’d heard that Allison was making her way here, none of them had suspected that Mystic Falls was going to be just as bad as Beacon Hills, it had just been the spot on the map the demon had picked out. For once Stiles regretted not doing his homework. Beacon Hills had its own dark side, one that had almost cost another of their friends their life. Hell, being a dumbass he’d almost died here twice himself, not taking the proper precautions when he went demon hunting in a town that probably had a higher murder rate than Chicago. But, Stiles knew, it wasn’t all bad here and tragedy didn’t just leave you knocked on your ass, ready for the next blow to squash you flat like a bug. There’d been a few blessings, their no longer being outsiders here one of them. What had happened to Riley had driven them all to their knees but they hadn’t been the only ones caught up in Niklaus Mikaelson’s Thanos like killings, Tatia and her friends, Grace, who Riley hadn’t been able to find anywhere afterwards, they’d all been in it and it had drawn them together in a way Stiles was sure only tragedy ever could.
They had each other’s backs now and more than once he’d gone to one of them for help and not only with the supernatural, although, that was still his focus here, despite his dad’s insistence that he put in the hours when it came to school. That had been one of the conditions of them moving here and Stiles liked to think he was keeping his dad happy on that front, of course, he didn’t have a clue about what his extra-curricular activities here really were and he had Scott, Danny, Allison, Lydia and Parrish to thank for that. They all had his back and he had theirs. Not a single one of them was gonna think he was crazy for thinking that the peace they had here of late was too good to be true, they were probably all already holding their collective breath, waiting for that other shoe to drop. Stefan was chuckling at his greeting as he dropped in on the guy’s bench but Stiles was in no doubt that Stefan had that same itch between his shoulder blades that he’d been feeling for days. ”You ever hear that song Bad Moon Rising?” he asked, his brows knitting together for a moment as he danced around the subject. ”That old one by Creedence Clearwater Revival.” Calling something like that old to the oldest senior in the history of high school was a joke but Stiles wasn’t laughing over it as he dragged a hand over his face. ”Since I heard that Niklaus Mikaelson was back in town it’s been feeling like that. Like something’s about to happen again. Tell me I’m not crazy, that I’m not the only one feeling it here.” He’d known that if he’d gone to Lydia or Scott they’d have told him he was reading too much into it, to enjoy this while he could, but that was easier said than done when you were twisting your bed clothes into a giant pretzel every night trying to get your brain shut off so you could grab some sleep.

There hadn’t really been anyone in Stefan’s life that he’d worried about before he returned to Mystic Falls and met Elena, he’d always had Damon but he had known that his brother was out there somewhere doing whatever he wanted to and Zach had been compelled to forget the fact that Damon had killed his girlfriend and had come very close to killing his unborn daughter too. Even Sarah was safe with the family that had adopted her so Stefan had been able to go where he pleased without thinking too much about it but now he had people that he cared about and that was something that he knew that he wasn’t ready to give up. When he had left town with Klaus he had felt sure that he would never get to see them again, he hadn’t known just how long Klaus would want to keep him around for and he hadn’t even known whether he would still be the same person when Klaus did eventually let him go but somehow Stefan had managed to hold onto everything that really mattered in his life and he’d been able to return home to Elena, Damon and the friends he’d made during his time in Mystic Falls. For the most part since becoming a vampire Stefan had done his best to stay as far away from people as possible, not wanting to risk them getting hurt in the chaos that was so often his life, but he and Elena had fallen in love and the friendships he had made were ones that he knew could withstand whatever life threw their way too so he knew that he just had to believe that this time things would be different. One thing was for sure, Stefan had never thought that he would end up becoming friends with werewolves, hunters and a banshee among others. He had quickly grown used to the fact that Elena’s friends were different to anyone he had ever met before but the gang from Beacon Hills were different too. Vampires and werewolves were supposed to be enemies, something that Stefan had never truly bought into, but they were able to set aside their differences and form strong bonds through their shared experiences of the supernatural world. Both Riley and Tatia had lost their lives during Klaus’ ritual and it had helped bring the two groups even closer together than they were before so some good had come of it at least. Of course that meant that Stefan now had to deal with the likes of Stiles and the roundabout way he had of asking what was on his mind but the truth was that Stefan didn’t actually mind one bit and the two of them had actually become friends. As Stiles spoke, Stefan couldn’t stop a smile from tugging at the corners of his lips. “Trust me, there’s nothing like hearing it live the way they played it at Woodstock in the sixties,” he said, his smile turning slightly nostalgic for a moment before he turned his attention back to Stiles. He knew that he could have commented on the fact that it wasn’t exactly that old a song but he knew that Stiles hadn’t meant anything by it so he chose not to. As Stiles continued, Stefan’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “You’re not crazy,” he said at last. “Klaus wants to create hybrids and we weren’t able to figure out the key to doing that while we travelled together so it can’t be good news that he is back here,” he explained. Stefan had done his best to keep Klaus away from Mystic Falls for as long as possible but he had always known that he would return in the end, he just had no idea what that would mean for those used in the ritual or for the werewolves in town. “Whatever he has planned Scott and Riley need to be careful, the last thing they want to do is catch his attention.”STILES STILINSKI

For weeks after Scott had first been turned Stiles had fought tooth and nail to stop anybody else from finding out. Supposedly they were meant to be safe if they didn’t have a clue that Scott was going full on killing machine the minute the full moon got up in the sky but it hadn’t worked out that way at all. If anything keeping it all hush hush had just put them in more danger. Peter had used that lack of knowledge to threaten Scott’s mom and Allison, to attack Lydia. Undoubtedly he hadn’t a clue then that Lydia was something other than a normal teenaged airhead, but still, he’d bitten her, used her nearly freaking dying to bend his arm into helping him track down Scott and by default Derek. Maybe if everyone had been aware that Beacon Hills was werewolf central they’d have been less vulnerable but there was no guaranteeing that. All he knew now was that it felt safer here in Mystic Falls with everybody at least a little aware of what the hell was going on around them. None of them believed that the animal attacks out in the woods were just that, they had seen all the signs, had known that something super bad was going on the moment that Riley had gone missing. Their eyes were wide open and Stiles knew that most of them would say there were well prepared, even with things finally growing quiet now. His mind still working a mile a minute, he couldn’t believe the same, not yet, but yay for those who could flick that switch off and sleep in utter peace. Yay for those who hadn’t been up at four am, trying to punch their pillow into the sort of submission that would let them drift off to sleep.
Stiles wasn’t sure if it was sleep deprivation that had him boggling at Stefan slightly over his Woodstock comment or just the fact that Stefan had been a teenager for practically freaking forever. He dragged a hand over his mouth, shook his head before he managed to find his words. ”Some other time I’m so gonna get a blow by blow of the entire thing from you but for now, let me just say that’s truly awesome man.” Stiles dropped the hand away from his mouth, balled up his fist and held it out for Stefan to bump. It would’ve felt so damn good just to shoot the breeze about music but Stiles knew that the itch that had continued between his shoulder blades just wasn’t going to let him. Not with Stefan supporting the idea instead of shooting it down. Cursing under his breath, Stiles covered his face with his hand again. He dragged it down, huffing out a sigh. ”Has Klaus ever heard about giving up? Repeating the same mistake over and over again expecting a different result is just nuts.” He’d honestly been the king of that sort of nuts at times but his insanity obviously wasn’t a patch on Klaus’. Stiles held both hands up now, warding off Stefan’s warning. ”Don’t worry, I’ll let them both know and if I have my way I’ll have them both under some sort of house arrest. I don’t think Danny could take Riley getting caught up in something like this again.” And he sure as hell wasn’t going to handle Niklaus Mikaelson pulling Scott’s strings like he was some sort of twisted hybrid marionette. Full stop he’d honestly just had enough of evil assholes doing that just because they wanted to sow a little violence and strife amongst those just trying to live their lives right.

As soon as Klaus had told him that he could leave, Stefan had known exactly where he wanted to go. When he left Mystic Falls behind he had been leaving not just his brother but his friends and the girl he loved and after living his life on his own for such a long time he knew that there wasn’t anywhere that he would rather be than back with the people that he cared about. Still, he had known that Klaus was up to something in New Orleans so he had stuck around for a little while, doing his best to figure out exactly what it was that he was up to, and even though he knew that a young witch was involved he still wasn’t entirely sure what Klaus had up his sleeve next. Stefan knew that there had to be something, there always was, but he had known that he couldn’t stay in New Orleans trying to figure it out forever. Before he left he had made Elena a promise that if anything ever happened to tear the two of them apart then he would fight with everything that he had to get back to her and that was a promise that he had always intended on keeping. Deep down a part of him knew that perhaps she would be safer far away from him and his world but it was also her world too. She wasn’t just an ordinary teenager, she was a doppelganger and that meant that whether she liked it or not she was always going to be a part of that world. That was something that Stefan was learning to accept and he knew that all he could do was try and keep her and the others safe as best he could. For the first time in years he had people around that he cared about and he knew that the last thing he wanted was to end up going back to the solitary life he used to lead so he would do whatever he had to in order to keep them around. Now that group had expanded to include the gang from Beacon Hills and Ben Winchester as well and to Stefan it was a relief to have more people around who knew the truth about the supernatural world. For over a hundred years he had done his best to keep what he was from those around him but he didn’t have to worry about that now and for the first time in a long time he could finally be himself. The expression on Stiles’ face at his comment about Woodstock really was priceless to Stefan. He had told those around him certain things about his past but he knew that none of them would truly appreciate that the way that Stiles seemed to. “I’d be happy to. You would have loved it,” Stefan grinned as he bumped his fist against Stiles’. If he was honest that gesture was one that he still didn’t entirely understand but he knew to just go along with it. As Stiles spoke again, Stefan raised an eyebrow as he looked over at his friend. “You’ve heard of Klaus before, right? That’s what he does,” he teased. “He waited over five hundred years to free his werewolf side after Katherine foiled his plan to use her in the ritual so if he didn’t give up then I think it safe to say he won’t give up now.” Klaus had already managed to achieve one of his goals by breaking the curse his mother had placed on him to bind his werewolf side so figuring out how to create more hybrids was just the next step in his plan. He hadn’t given up before and Stefan knew that he didn’t intend to start now. “During the time Klaus and I travelled together he kept trying different ways of creating hybrids but none of them worked. So many werewolves have died already but he doesn’t care about that, he won’t stop until he finds a way. Now that he is back in town he must have come up with a new idea and I think it might have something to do with the witch he found in New Orleans,” Stefan explained. He didn’t know all of the details but someone had caught Klaus’ attention and he hadn’t wanted him around to see why. “I wouldn’t be surprised. It must be the same for you with Scott, you two are like brothers.”STILES STILINSKI

Beacon Hills had been filled with threats of all kinds. Half of them had been stinking up the town since long before the night he’d dragged Scott out into the woods in some Stand by Me sort of teenaged rite of passage. Peter hadn’t just come out of nowhere and neither had the Alpha pack, they’d skulked around the town undercover, leaving behind the sort of trouble his dad had been clearing up for years without any sort of clue of its supernatural origin. Each time it had felt as though they’d have no hope of coming out of the trouble they’d found intact, no hope of actually defeating that month’s big bad, but until the nogitsune had taken both Allison and Aiden, they’d managed the first somehow, no damage not healing eventually. The latter had remained true even while grief had weighed them down and they’d fought to get Allison back. Every single thing they’d come across had sported some sort of weakness. The moment the Mikaelsons had come on the scene the certainty that they’d eventually deal with everything had come tumbling down. Even now there was that doubt in the back of his mind, the one that Stiles knew kept him up at night. Niklaus Mikaelson had swaggered into town, snatched up Riley and a girl from their high school, had turned her into a vampire and had magically locked the two of them up in a tomb out in the woods while he’d picked which of the doppelgangers he was also gonna slaughter in his little ritual. Stiles would’ve laid money on the fact that Stefan had breathed a sigh of relief at it not being Elena. He knew that the guy had done everything possible to make sure that the ritual hadn’t occurred in the first place but still, no matter how much you cared, when it wasn’t someone you loved getting their heart ripped out of their chest, there was some real relief there.
Even so, given the sacrifice Stefan had made to save his brother from Niklaus’ poisonous werewolf bite, it was obvious that Stefan was just like him, he’d had offered to swap places if that would’ve meant protecting any of them from ending up dead the way they had. Sacrifice was still one hell of a painful thing, even if you were impervious to just about everything going. Skinny, human little him wouldn’t have managed a road trip with Niklaus, skinny little him also never would’ve made it to anything as awesome as Woodstock. Damn it was easy to forget just how long someone had lived when they still looked like they were in their teens. Still shaking his head in shocked amusement over Stefan’s admission, Stiles’ fist bumped the guy. ”I would’ve sold a kidney to get to it,” he said honestly, if he’d been a teenager forty years ago that was. As it was he was growing up now, in the era of the almighty Original hybrid. Stiles curled the hand he’d dragged over his face into a fist and crammed the knuckles of it against his mouth. ”Someone needs to teach him how to let things go,” he said on a groan. ”The guy’s not happy with coming from the most powerful family walking the earth?” There were so many echoes of Peter in the hybrid. Both of them had a need for revenge that seemed to burn bone deep, where Peter had been determined enough to get it with Kate that he’d killed his own niece, and Klaus had been chasing an escaped doppelganger for half a freaking millennium. Brown eyes narrowing, Stiles planted both elbows on the edge of the table and leaned in. ”Witch?” he asked, knowing exactly what Klaus’ witches had managed to do the last time. ”The thought of Scott getting caught up in this and getting hurt? It freaking terrifies me,” he explained. It had torn something up inside of him when he’d had to step into the puddle of petrol at the motel from hell and get the flare out of Scott’s hand. That something was going to spontaneously combust if Klaus had found a way of doing things and was now turning his beady little eye on Scott and the rest of the pack again.

Living in Mystic Falls now was so different to how it was when Stefan was growing up. Back then as far as he knew aside from the Lockwood werewolves who had been keeping what they were a secret, vampires were the only creatures that had resided in the town. The first he had encountered was Katherine and meeting her had changed the course of his life forever. This wasn’t how he had thought that his life would end up, it had never occurred to him that he might end up frozen at seventeen forever and having to watch as the world changed and grew around him but that was exactly what had happened. For a long time Stefan had struggled with his bloodlust, in fact it was something that he still struggled with on a daily basis now but he no longer let that control him. His diet of animal blood was something that most vampires wouldn’t even consider and to those who tried it, it was absolutely repulsive but it was the diet that he needed to stick to if he was going to be able to stay true to who he was. Human blood was meant to be his natural food source but it always turned him into someone that he didn’t want to be when he drank it, it made him feel like he was always hungry and that hunger could never quite be satiated no matter how many people he drank from. That wasn’t him, he didn’t want to be a monster and he refused to let that side of him take over again. Drinking from animals left him weaker than other vampires his age but it didn’t make him lose his mind the way that human blood did so he knew that it was something that he had to do. His diet didn’t stop him from being able to enjoy the other perks of being a vampire, though. He had travelled the world and seen a lot more than most people could probably even begin to imagine but sooner or later he always found himself being drawn back to Mystic Falls. He hadn’t planned on sticking around for too long when he’d decided to visit Zach but after seeing Elena he had known that there was no way that he could possibly leave without getting answers. Now he had those and he still had no desire to leave as for the first time in years he had everything that he could possibly want. He had an incredible girlfriend, he had friends and his relationship with Damon was much better than it had been in a long time so he knew that he wasn’t going to let that go without a fight. When Klaus but Damon he had made the choice to leave in order to save his brother not expecting to ever be able to return but now he was back and he knew that he would fight to stay with the people he cared about. “I’ll have to find out the souvenirs I’ve got lying around at home somewhere, you’ll love them,” he chuckled. He didn’t often keep too many possessions when he was on the road but there were some that had stayed with him and aside from Lexi he knew that if there was anyone who would appreciate them then it was Stiles. “I think I still have some mementoes lying around from when my best friend and I met Bon Jovi when we crashed their concert in the eighties,” he added with a grin. That had definitely been one of his best birthdays without a doubt. As Stiles spoke again, Stefan shook his head. “Klaus is never satisfied with how much power he has, he always has to have more,” he explained. Even among his own family the guy always felt the need to come out on top and that was something that Stefan suspected was never going to change. “While we were in New Orleans he became secretive after a while and didn’t want me tagging along. I tracked him to a shop run by one of the most powerful witches in the city but I don’t know what they discussed,” he shrugged. That much he was still trying to figure out at the moment. As Stiles spoke again, Stefan nodded. “You guys aren’t alone in this now, we’ll all do what we can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”STILES STILINSKI

Some people might’ve looked at what they’d gone through in Beacon Hills and wondered how the hell a bunch of teenagers had made it through most of that alive. Most being the operative word considering that they’d lost both Allison and Aiden. Without their parents coming into it, without Derek and, God, he was going to gag at the word, Peter, they wouldn’t have even gotten that far. Still, after everything they’d gone through, it still seemed to pale in comparison with what had happened here in Mystic Falls. At least back home they only had werewolves, a nogitsune and a darach to deal with. Here, and this is where Stiles honestly felt mind blown, they seemed to have every creature in the book and a few new ones the Argent bestiary hadn’t covered. People came back to life from the dead a thousand years after they died, there were hybrids performing rituals, vampires lurking around every corner. Yet in the middle of that Stefan and the others were living relatively normal lives, trying to be teenagers again or just get through their teen years the first time. They were managing it too. Maybe he had a little hero worship going on because of that. Stefan was coming through it in a way Stiles knew he could only try and emulate. Their groups coming together after the ritual meant he’d gotten to see all of that first hand. It also meant that he was fully justified in almost dropping to his knees in pure worship when his attempt to talk Stefan into a little advice had become mind blowing again.
Dramatic was probably the right word for offering to sell a kidney to get to Woodstock. If he’d been born a couple of decades earlier there wouldn’t have been any need for his dramatics but the boat had sailed on decent music like two decades ago. Stiles’ brown eyes were wide as he stared at Stefan, his mouth fell open. ”OK, come clean, you’re a God right? Like totally made for me to worship?” he asked. Shaking his head, his mouth working soundlessly Stiles totally Wayne’s World-ed Stefan, bowing down in a we are not worthy way. Stiles used his hand to clap his mouth shut around a breathless snort. ”I’m gonna lay money on the fact that not every vampire is that cool. Your brothers like a secret Engelbert Humperdinck fan right?” There had to be some non-cool in that family to make up for the awesomeness that was Stefan Salvatore’s secret life. On the other hand, there was very cool in the Mikaelson family. Elijah most probably, Henrik too. The rest? Pffft. So far Niklaus had been the one peeing in the kiddy pool of their family’s reputation. Instead of raking his teeth over his lip as he listened to Stefan Stiles rubbed the edge of his teeth against the back of his knuckles instead, sinking in his canines for a moment before he let go. ”You’d think about a thousand years he’d have gotten his fill,” he said dryly. Klaus had more power now though, who was going to stop when they had what they always wanted right at their door. Dark brows drew together at Stefan’s explanation of what had happened in Mystic Falls. ”He’s buddying up to more witches? I guess that means his others didn’t last long. That goes both ways, you know?” Stiles let out a deep breath, propping both elbows on the edge of the table. ”You hear about anything he’s up to since he got back?” Just a little heads up on what was going on would maybe mean he wasn’t up half the night with his brain running around in circles over it.

Stefan had made friends for the first time in a long time after moving to Mystic Falls and he had always been content with having Elena, Bonnie, Caroline and the others in his life but now he had more than that as well. He had been wary of so many kids from Beacon Hills moving to Mystic Falls to begin with but he had soon come to realise that they didn’t mean any harm. They all wanted to keep each other and the town safe just as much as he and his friends did and it definitely helped having others to count on. Some of them had become friends to him over the last few years and Stiles was one of those people. Their worlds seemed to keep overlapping and he suspected that the only way they were going to get through any of this was together. It still seemed incredible to him that the people they had lost in the ritual had come back to them in the end but now they were facing the problem of Klaus making hybrids. When he returned to town Stefan had filled not just Elena and the others but he had filled Scott and his friends in as well. Since werewolves were the target Stefan knew that Scott and the others could well be in danger and he knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to any of them. Stefan wanted to make sure that they all stayed safe if he could and that meant making sure that they all knew exactly what was going on in Mystic Falls. Scott had told him about what life was like for them all back in Beacon Hills but he suspected that things were so much worse in Mystic Falls and they all needed to work together if they were going to make it through everything that came their way. It was more than just circumstance that had brought them all together though, Stefan had a feeling that he would have befriended them all anyway so he knew that things had worked out in the end. Not only did Stefan want to keep the werewolves of Mystic Falls safe but he also wanted to make sure that Klaus didn’t go after the three people he had used in the ritual to free his werewolf side either. Along with needing the cure to save Damon’s life, that was the other reason why Stefan had agreed to leave Mystic Falls with Klaus in the first place and he knew that it was the right decision. Now he was back in Mystic Falls, though, and he wasn’t planning on going anywhere again. He hadn’t known what Stiles had wanted his help with when he’d approached but that would all become clear in time anyway. “Definitely not, it’s just amazing what you can get up to when you live as long as I have and you have compulsion on your side,” Stefan chuckled. There were drawbacks to being a vampire but there were advantages as well and that was definitely one of them. “More like Taylor Swift,” Stefan grinned. “I think he has read Twilight as well.” He knew that Damon probably wouldn’t like him sharing those two bits of information but Stefan knew that Damon would do the same anyway so he wasn’t too worried. “You would think so but he did have to live with a part of himself locked away for a thousand years so I can understand that part of it at least.” He hadn’t understood it back when Elena was in danger of being used in the ritual but Tatia had saved her from that fate and thankfully she, Riley and Grace had all been brought back to life thanks to Henrik so they had another chance to live their lives. “Witches normally only stick around for as long as they’re of use but this is different. We tried so many different ways of making hybrids and each of them failed so he has to find another way.” Stefan was still haunted by the memories of all of those deaths even now but he knew that he wasn’t going to let that stop him from trying to help everyone else. “Only that he’s still trying to figure out the key. Word about what he wants to do is spreading though which means we might end up seeing more werewolves around here soon so we’d all better watch out.” Werewolf bites were deadly for a vampire as he had found out when Damon was bitten by Klaus so he knew that that applied to him and Damon as well. With the help of the Argent bestiary Stiles liked to think he’d known about most of the things that were out there, at least in theory, before they’d made the move to Mystic Falls. That had been some sort of delusion of grandeur though. There were things out there that even the Argents hadn’t known about. The supernatural world was huge and while werewolves and druids and darachs and even things like oni and berserkers had stopped impressing him, other things hadn’t. Vampires, especially the ancient ones, were jaw dropping. They were nothing like Twilight or even Dracula would’ve had you believe, although some bits of what had snuck into the latter at least were definitely true. They were old too, seriously freaking old. That had messed with his brain. Stiles knew he shouldn’t have been poking so deep into the whole thing but with Niklaus Mikaelson killing Riley in his ritual and trouble seeming to follow the family everything they went he’d had to do it. A thousand freaking years old. A hundred and fifty had seemed pretty incredible but having lived long enough to see everything from the Norman Conquest to Genghis Khan taking over half the world, from the Battle of Agincourt to the Industrial revolution. They might’ve come out the other side of it impervious and a little arrogant in part, but when you’d lived that long honestly how much did the little people matter? That wasn’t a question he was about to ask Stefan. Instead of being an asshole, he’d proved to be a seriously decent guy.
It wasn’t just the offer of Bon Jovi memorabilia that had him thinking that either. Stefan had been right there, trying to help when the ritual had gone down and had apparently fallen on his sword for his big brother when he needed it. Damon seemed to sway way closer to the asshole point on the meter than Stefan ever had. Stiles reached up, using his hand to push his mouth shut but it fell open again. ”You compelled yourself into the Bon Jovi concert?” he asked, then flapped his hand. Honestly he didn’t want to know, it’d spoil Stefan’s god status. Damon on the other hand though … Stiles smirked, a snort busting past his grin. ”I knew that wannabe James Dean veneer was hiding something embarrassing. Is he Team Edward or Team Jacob?” He really should’ve been embarrassed that he knew that himself but there’d been a time when literally every girl at school was reading them, so he’d looked. The Mikaelsons’ veneer hid something far darker, far more violent. ”I guess,” Stiles managed hoarsely. He wanted to stand and move, the energy jumping beneath his skin again. ”I can’t see him letting it go there though. All that power’s gonna go to his head.” It always did. Klaus had failed to make his hybrids in New Orleans, that meant he’d be trying again back here. Crap. Stiles began to bounce his knee up and down, he thumb nail disappearing between his teeth. ”You mean the pack might be in trouble again? I thought maybe he’d try coming for Riley again, you know, once he figured out somebody had brought him back.” This might be worse though. Scott and all the others were in harm’s way again now.

When Stefan had returned to Mystic Falls he could have done just about anything with his life. He could have made people believe that he was older than he looked if he’d wanted to and he could have landed a job to keep himself busy. He had thought about it at first but his reason for sticking around Mystic Falls was so that he could get to know Elena better and the best way he had known to get close to her was by going back to high school. He knew that Damon hadn’t understood why he had done it but starting out at that age had given him the chance to stay in town for longer as well. There were people in town who knew the truth about the supernatural but there were others who didn’t and Stefan knew that letting what he was become public knowledge just wasn’t an option. There were more people in town now who knew that he was a vampire than he had ever had before but he had made his peace with that a long time ago. He knew that the friends he had made when he got to town wouldn’t let his secret become known and he trusted Stiles, Scott, Ben and the others to keep it as well. They were all in this together after all, they had banded together when the ritual was taking place and Stefan liked to think that he had made some pretty good friends in at least some of them since then. There were others that he didn’t know anywhere near as well but he knew that they were all good kids and they had accepted him despite knowing that he was a vampire and so much older than they were so he knew that he couldn’t ask for anymore than that. Stefan had known that if any of them had questions for him then Stiles would be one of them so he wasn’t at all surprised that he wanted to know more. There was something serious that they needed to discuss considering that Klaus was still trying to make hybrids but something told Stefan that that was going to be a problem that they were going to have to deal with a while so he knew that there was time to get to know Stiles a bit better as well. “My friend Lexi and I did but partying with the band afterwards was better than the concert itself,” he admitted. That had definitely been one of his better birthdays but even though Lexi was gone he still hadn’t given up hope that there would be some more incredible birthdays like that to come. “He’s not a fan of werewolves so I’d probably say Edward,” He knew that it was to be expected especially after Klaus’ bite had almost killed Damon but he had a feeling that his brother still wouldn’t thank him for any of this. “Maybe but at least he has his family around to try and keep him grounded now,” Stefan shrugged. Whether or not it would work he wasn’t sure but they could still hope nonetheless. Klaus was determined to create hybrids and something told Stefan that nothing was going to stop him from doing that, especially if their road trip was anything to go by. As Stiles spoke again, Stefan nodded. “He might but he wants werewolves to join him so all of the wolves in your pack need to be careful.”STILES STILINSKI

Maybe it had been sheer luck that Scott had been the one Peter had cornered out in the woods that first night, sheer bad luck of course, but it had been a purposeful in the parking structure when Peter had given him the choice on being bitten. He could’ve been a werewolf like Scott and the others, had the sort of freaking super powers that literally everybody else around him had ended up with. Too much water had gone under the bridge by then though, muddy, foul water that had almost drowned them all. Stiles knew not being a weak little human anymore would’ve let him help more in whatever fights they ended up neck deep in but there was always a cost and ending up one of Peter’s betas would’ve been a higher one than he was willing to pay. There would’ve been no guarantee he’d come out of it the way Scott had, even if it had taken he could’ve ended up dead in a bank vault or on an Alpha’s claws. He could’ve ended up with an even bigger target on his back, been more of a burden on his friends. What happened with the nogitsune had proved just that. Nope, whatever was gonna come he was gonna face it as a scrawny, mouthy goofball. That wasn’t to say there weren’t gonna be moments when he found himself envying everybody else. Compulsion, it could save your neck up against the right person … and it could get you into a Bon Jovi concert.
Stiles knew that likely would’ve swayed the choice for him more than threats of bodily violence by various members of the Hale family ever would’ve done. He went to play off Stefan’s insistence that partying with the band was better than the gig itself but he stopped halfway through, his lips pursed. Partying with Jon, Tito, Richie and David would’ve been mind blowing, even if he would’ve just flailed his way through it. ”Oh man,” he breathed. Brown eyes squinted faintly, he looked at the vampire hopefully. ”I’m so gonna have to drag you with me the next time they play anywhere near here.” It wasn’t that bad to use compulsion for less noble reasons right? Just for like a single night? With everything that had been going on around them surely nobody would’ve blamed him. Not even Stefan’s Hale-level of scary older brother. Stiles clucked his tongue at Stefan’s comment, nodding. ”I totally figured that. Was that ‘cause of the uh …” He bared his teeth then gestured vaguely in the direction of his arm. Word had gotten around about that, Klaus Mikaelson’s genius plan to get Stefan to go travelling with him. It had been freaking savage, bad enough that Stiles raised his brows at Stefan now. ”Didn’t he have them around him for like the last thousand years?” It wasn’t like they’d managed to stop him from tearing out three people’s hearts to free up his werewolf side. It was the fact that Klaus was back and possibly unhinged still that had brought him over to bug Stefan now. Stiles’ throat worked as he nodded, one leg starting to bounce anxiously, his heel drumming the ground. ”He’s not gonna stop coming, is he? It won’t matter that he already killed Riley once, they’re just faceless potential minions for him.” That made Niklaus just as dangerous as the Alpha pack had been, maybe even worse.

While Stefan was growing up he never would have thought that this would be his life. He could have done as Damon had when he got to town and not committed himself to anything like going to school or getting a job but Stefan had known that that just wasn’t him. He had enrolled himself at the local high school so that he could get to know Elena and find out how she was connected to Katherine and that wasn’t a decision that he regretted. Things had changed so much since then, he had fallen in love with Elena and learned that Katherine had never died in the first place and since then he had been trying to repair his relationship with his brother and live his life to the full. Stefan had had to leave it all behind when he made a deal with Klaus to get the cure for the bite for Damon but if he had to do that again then Stefan knew that he would make the same decision to save his brother as many times as it took. He had thought that Damon had still hated him back then but Damon had told him differently when he had delivered the cure. Somewhere along the line they had stopped being enemies and started being brothers again and Stefan knew that he wouldn’t change the way things were now for anything in the world. He had missed having a brother around that he could count on and confide in but finally things were on the right track. Stefan hadn’t known if he would get to return to Mystic Falls but as soon as his time with Klaus had come to an end and the decision about where to go next had been Stefan’s there had been only one place that he had wanted to go. He had built a life for himself in Mystic Falls and even though it was so different from the life that he should have had the truth was that it was even better. Not only did he have Elena and Damon back in his life now but he had the other friends that he had made over the last few years as well, friends like Stiles. He hadn’t known quite what to make of the gang from Beacon Hills to begin with but as he had started getting to know a few of them he had realised that they weren’t that different from the people in his life who had grown up in Mystic Falls. They had all been thrown into the supernatural world and were doing their best to navigate it so it made sense to do so together. Stefan knew that he didn’t have to hide what he was or anything about his past from his friends and if he was honest it was actually good to talk about the old days with someone that he knew would appreciate some of the stories. “I’m in,” Stefan nodded, a smile forming on his face as he looked over at Stiles. “I’ll even see if I can get us backstage.” His compulsion wasn’t as strong due to the fact that he fed on animals rather than humans but it was good enough to get him by when he absolutely had to use it. Stefan never liked taking free will away from people so he didn’t use it too often but for something like that he knew there wouldn’t be any harm done so he was happy to make an exception. As Stiles spoke again, Stefan studied him carefully for a moment. “So you heard about that, huh?” he asked. He hadn’t known what Damon, Claire and Elena would have told the others about why he had disappeared so suddenly and he hadn’t talked to many people about it since he’d returned but it seemed like word had gotten around anyway. “That’s right. It nearly killed him,” Stefan nodded. It would have done if he hadn’t arrived with the cure when he had done but that wasn’t something that he liked to think about because even when his relationship with Damon was at its lowest point Stefan had still been able to take comfort from the fact that his brother, the one person who knew him when he was human, was still out there somewhere. “Henrik was dead and the others were locked away in coffins for a long time. He only really had Elijah,” Stefan explained. Now things were different and all of the Mikaelsons were together so Stefan honestly hoped that things would be different. “I don’t think so,” he admitted as Stiles said that Klaus wasn’t going to stop coming for his friends. “There’s strength in numbers. I don’t know if Klaus will do any of the dirty work himself this time around so if we all stick together then hopefully we’ll be able to stop anyone from going after the werewolves,” he said, knowing that this wasn’t a fight that he was going to stay out of. He might not be a part of the pack the same way that Stiles was but they were his friends too and he knew that he would stand with them. STILES STILINSKI

There were benefits that came with being a supernatural. Strength, super senses, being freaking near impervious to harm and even immortality. None of it sounded bad until you heard the other side of things and faced the constant threats from things that were bigger and badder than you. In the middle of all of that you didn’t think about what else it got you. Stiles still felt a little light headed when he heard about the sort of stuff Damon and Stefan and all the others had managed to get over to over the centuries. Bon Jovi, freaking Bon Jovi. He’d wanted to tunnel his hands into his hair at the thought and just pull to try and get his brain to somehow handle that sort of information. Who knew what else they’d done or seen? Well … they did, they probably just knew his frantic mind probably couldn’t handle it without him ending up catatonic.
He’d been pretty close as he’d sat there staring at Stefan with his mouth falling open like a damn fish. Gawping at the idea of getting back stage with some of the biggest gods in rock. Stiles liked to think he managed to pull himself together but he was lucky if it lasted two whole minutes. His mouth fell open again, closed, opened until he let out a hoarse breath. ”Dude, you do that and I swear you can have a kidney and my first born.” Not that the chances of there even being the latter tended to be too great at any point. Life had changed but not to that point yet. Baby steps while Scott took great leaping jumps and landed square each damn time. The rest of them kinda stumbled along behind, his own skills laying in the fact that he never stopped prying. Sometimes that worked for him … sometimes it got him in over his head.
It felt a little like the latter as he admitted to Stefan that he knew something about Damon being bitten. His lower lip disappearing between his teeth in a show of nerves, Stiles shrugged. ”Damon kinda talked when I ran into him at the Grill,” he admitted. Word got around anyway, especially with both Niklaus Mikaelson and Stefan out of town at the same time. In a way it had been a relief, they didn’t have to watch their backs so much, in another it had been worse when Klaus had come back, pissed that his experiments hadn’t worked. Stiles scrubbed both hands over his face, dragged them down to cover his mouth as he mumbled through them. ”Damn, that’s always the same right, if one of them bites you guys?” It hadn’t been covered in the bestiary but they were learning so much more here than even the Argents had known. He didn’t want to feel any sort of empathy towards a guy who’d killed one of his friends but Stiles kinda felt it twisting in the pit of his stomach as Stefan answered his questions. ”Sounds like a real close family,” he drawled lightly. He and Scott had been kinda like that though, just the two of them there for each other for so long.
Crap. Just the thought of Klaus coming for the pack again had Stiles feeling nauseous. His leg bounced harder, his knee jittering against the underside of the table. He tried to jam his other foot on that one but it didn’t stop. One hand came up for him to gnaw at his nail. ”You honestly think that even with all of us standing together we can stop him from doing anything? Riley was just walking down the street last time, just going to Danny’s place and Klaus’ witches took him.” How in the hell could you fight against that, even if you had a witch on your own side? The Originals were a thousand years old, in that time they’d probably forgotten more tricks than the rest of them had learned.
