Standing in front of the Salvatore Boarding House Elijah studied the rambling building. If there was one place he would have cautioned Tatia against living it would have been here, so close to her doppelganger. It was just one single target for his brother when he arrived, a one stop shop for Niklaus to find the human Petrova he needed to complete the ritual that would free his werewolf side. Elijah knew he had long since lost the right to make demands of Tatia however, that right had been forfeited the moment he had taken her life. She felt safe with the Salvatores, by the side of Elena Gilbert and right now that sense of safety was likely of more importance than his brother’s arrival. His family had been entangled with the Salvatores before, an entanglement that had ended up with Stefan Salvatore remembering nothing of them. It had been safer for the young vampire then but would not protect him from Niklaus now. His brother would fight his way through whoever stood between him and the blood he would need. Not even his own presence would present much of an obstacle. He had talked Niklaus down from many ledges before but this ritual was one his brother would not step back from.
When he had gone to find Tatia in the woods Elijah had attempted to give her a stark warning about the dangers, that had been before he was aware that she had moved from the cabin where he had watched her grow accustomed to the modern world. Now she was living here and despite the warnings he was mentally giving himself about interfering, about begging for her forgiveness and inserting herself into his life once more, he was here to check on her. Elijah drew himself up straighter, squaring his jaw as he approached the door. He had seen Tatia leave a short while before and knew that the younger Salvatore was now in his home alone. If there were a time to speak with him, to warn him of the danger, to make certain that he was prepared for what was coming … to talk to him of Tatia’s safety, it was now. To his sensitive ears the bell rang loudly, echoing through the house as he stepped back a half pace from the door. Elijah’s hand was smoothing the front of his suit jacket as the door opened, a faint, congenial smile touching his mouth as he nodded towards Stefan. ”I beg your pardon … if I might have a moment of your time Mr Salvatore,” he murmured, his voice low but firm. Civility was best for now, and would hopefully last longer than a few moments. If it didn’t he really couldn’t blame Stefan much, questions in this town tended to come with a cost.

There was a time when Stefan had thought that he knew all of the secrets about the supernatural world but the truth was that since he returned to Mystic Falls not that long ago he had started to realise that his knowledge of the world he lived in barely scraped the surface of what was really out there. There was more than just vampires out there, there were also demons, witches and who knew what else and they all seemed to be converging on Mystic Falls for some reason. It hadn’t seemed that way during his youth since the Founders’ Council had always been good at covering up any mysterious deaths or disappearances that happened in the town but the truth was that it had always been almost like a beacon for the supernatural. Stefan had never understood why since there wasn’t anything that remarkable about the town but there was a lot going on that he couldn’t explain at the moment so he knew better than to spend too much time worrying about it. So much seemed to be happening, he had heard that there was a new threat after Elena, a family of Original vampires in fact, but the reason why they wanted her remained unclear and even though he had heard that it wasn’t wise to stand in their way he knew that he wasn’t going to let anything happen to the girl he loved. Add to that the fact that Stefan had also been helping Skylar obtain a daylight ring and teaching Tatia all about the world they now lived in his life had been busy to say the least. It still seemed incredible that Tatia had lived and died on the land that Mystic Falls had been built on a thousand years ago before being brought back to life by an unknown entity. Something told him that it hadn’t happened by chance and he didn’t believe that the fact that she had lived where the town now stood was merely a coincidence. There was more to it and he was determined to get to the bottom of it before it was too late. He knew that he couldn’t put his life on hold for that, though, so he had been doing everything he could in order to find a balance. He was still going to school, spending time with Elena, helping both Skylar and Tatia and spending time with the friends he had made since returning to Mystic Falls so free time was something that Stefan hadn’t had a lot of lately but that day he had the house to himself and he intended on making the most of it. His homework was up to date and he didn’t have any plans for the rest of the day so he was left to do something that he hadn’t been able to do for what felt like a long time – read. Deep down he knew that he should have realised that the peace wouldn’t last, however, and it wasn’t long before the doorbell rang. Setting his book down on the table he made his way to the front door and opened it to find an unfamiliar figure standing before him. As the man spoke, Stefan nodded although he couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something strange about the man. “Of course but please call me Stefan,” he said as he studied the man carefully. “How can I help you?” he asked, knowing he needed to hear the answer to that question before inviting him in. Naivety was rarely a trait found amongst their kind, the turning seemed to drive it out of most of them, but over the centuries Elijah had found himself repeatedly blind-sided by things. His brother was amongst the worst for knocking him off balance that way, tearing the very ground out from under his feet, leaving him questioning whether the vow was something he should’ve made all those years ago. For a man obsessed by the idea of others betraying him Niklaus did an awful lot of betraying himself. Manipulative, selfish, egotistical at times, Niklaus had ruined so many lives before those he suspected could do the same to him. In his mind it was always better to strike first and leave his siblings to clean up the mess afterwards. For hundreds of years he had done that for his brother, playing the peace maker, volunteering to remain behind and draw the heat away from his siblings. So often Elijah had found himself setting aside his own happiness, his own desires for family. What he wanted in this world was not as important as the promise he had made, family above everything else. Somehow he’d managed to do that again and again and yet, as news of the latest Petrova doppelganger appearing in Mystic Falls had reached him Elijah had found that protective instinct rising. He could not see himself ever abandoning his brother but at the same time could he stand by and watch his family destroy another Petrova? The answer to that question had led him to the vampire currently shielding two of them.
Stefan Salvatore was the new order, the man standing between Niklaus and those his brother was hell bent on destroying to release the other half of himself from what he saw as bondage. As much as Elijah wished the best for his brother, he could not stand by with another Petrova’s blood on his hands, especially not Tatia’s. He had not been with Niklaus and Rebekah in Chicago in the 1920s, even if he’d been in possession of his memories Stefan was not likely to recognise him. Elijah had suspected Tatia might well have warned him about what was coming, who was in town, and yet as he responded to the greeting Stefan seemed in equal parts courteous and naively welcoming. A warning burned on the tip of Elijah’s tongue as he studied the man right back. ”I sincerely hope you can help me Stefan,” he murmured, fingers deftly unbuttoning the jacket he wore before he slipped his hands into his pockets. ”My name is Elijah Mikaeslon…” Elijah paused, waiting to see if there was any recognition of that where there hadn’t been of his face. ”I believe you may have heard my name, from Tatia Petrova, or others. I can assure you that I’m not here to do my brother’s bidding, it is instead, I suppose, a mission of mercy.” Which was a polite way of saying that he was here to try and make sure that it would not be Stefan’s head first on his brother’s chopping board, rapidly followed by that of the woman he loved and the girl who had was so distantly descended from her.

Learning that Katherine was in Mystic Falls was taking some getting used to but finding out that there was another doppelganger in town who was older than Katherine and Elena combined was enough to make Stefan’s head spin. He really hadn’t known what to make of Tatia to begin with but the more time he spent with her the more he had started to realise that she really was being genuine. She knew nothing about the way the world was now so Stefan had been doing his best to explain everything to her but it was taking time. She and Elena had decided that they wanted to pass themselves off as twins so that they could both live in Mystic Falls in peace and while Stefan knew that it wasn’t going to be easy he also knew that it was most likely the best option for both of them. Tatia could have started over anywhere but he knew that it just wouldn’t be the same. From what she had told him the village she had grown up in used to stand on the land that Mystic Falls had been built upon so he knew that it made sense for her to want to stay close by. There was something more going on than Tatia had told him, for the last few days she had been staying quiet about something but after everything that she had been through he knew better than to push her. She had already told him about her son and a few other details from her past but he got the impression that this was something more and he knew that he just had to trust that she would tell him when the time was right. The truth was that with Damon out of town doing something known only to him, Stefan was glad to have some company around the Boarding House. It was always too quiet when he was there on his own but now he had Tatia and Skylar as well so it felt more like home. He wasn’t too sure what Damon would make of their house guests when he finally returned to town but they had both needed somewhere safe to stay so Stefan knew that he had done the right thing. Now there was a stranger on his doorstep and as soon as he introduced himself Stefan’s guard went up. The Mikaelson name was one that he had heard around before, it was a member of that family that was looking for Elena and Stefan knew that he wasn’t about to let anything happen to her. “I have heard your name before. Your family became the first vampires, you were the one who killed Tatia,” Stefan said carefully. There was still a lot that Tatia had yet to tell him but she had told him that much at least as he knew that she had wanted to warn him. “If you’re not here looking for Elena then what are you doing here?” he asked, unable to deny that Elijah’s presence put him on edge a little given the rumours he had heard about the family but he was also genuinely curious. Before the unthinkable had happened and Henrik’s death had driven his mother to absolute madness the name Mikaelson had been spoken with respect in these parts. His father had been a well respected warrior, a landowner in this new world. The temper he had allowed to lash his step-son had not been enough to turn those around them against him. In the centuries since it had come to mean something far more terrifying. His brother’s temper, so like that of the man who had not begat him but who had raised him, was a bloody one and the reputation it left behind was enough to have most of those who had descended from their various lines quake at the name. A part of Elijah was glad that Tatia hadn’t seen what his family had done in those intervening centuries. She had already seen the basest part of him when he had taken her life, Elijah did not want for her to see just how much further his family had fallen. Blood lust was excusable, the violence, the slaughter once they had control afterwards was not and he was in no doubt that when Niklaus descended upon the town and discovered that there were forces here working against him, the slaughter would be monumental. The man he had come to warn would likely fall foul of his brother first – a vampire already acquainted with his family, even if he could not recall it, one who would stand in Niklaus’ way to protect the young woman rumour had it that he had fallen for. Niklaus would undoubtedly twist Stefan like he had done so with so many others before, turning him against those he was trying to protect, using his feelings against him. Elijah expected his brother to do the same with him, to call upon the vow to guilt him in to stepping aside and allowing another young woman to die in the attempt to finally break the bonds placed upon him. He had almost done that once before, when it had been Katerina’s life on the line. She had taken matters into her own hands, escaping from them both and turning herself into what they were to ensure she could not be used in such a way again. He hoped that Elena would not find that her only option. Pledging to help another work against his brother could possibly result in spending the next century or two in a coffin but if it would protect their lives … then it was worth it. It was also worth suffering the doubt about his intentions and the suspicion that was even now possibly coming his way. Elijah’s mouth twitched faintly, the faint smile that appeared tight. ”I see that she has discussed that much with you,” he murmured. ”I hope that you are also aware that her tragic death occurred on the very night my mother turned us into those first vampires. She is safe from me now.” In those thousand years he’d gained complete control of the beast inside of him. Others, his brother for example, weren’t quite as cautious. Lifting his chin faintly, Elijah grew serious once more. ”I am here to offer my help with protecting both of them, Elena and Tatia. My brother is no doubt only a short distance behind me. Once he arrives in town and gets his hands on what is needed to complete his ritual there may be no safe place for Elena or Tatia.” Given the vow he had made and his loyalty to his family Elijah knew that this meeting could possibly be the only help he could offer. For a while now there had been rumours going around that someone was after Elena but no matter how hard Stefan had tried to find out exactly what was going on he had kept drawing a blank. To begin with the fact that Elena looked like Katherine had confused him and for a while he had thought that Katherine had been pretending to be human and had forged a new identity for herself but from the moment he first met Elena he had known that she was nothing like the vampire he had once known. She was good and pure in ways that Katherine had only ever pretended to be and it hadn’t taken him long to start falling for her. Even though she shared the same looks as Katherine the two couldn’t be more different when it came to their personalities and it was that which had made him realise that he wanted to be with her. Now that Katherine was back in town things were much more complicated, for over a century he had allowed himself to believe that she had compelled him into loving her even though somewhere in the back of his mind he had known that wasn’t possible but she had set him straight on that point and now he had one more person to worry about. He knew that she didn’t like the fact that he and Elena were together and the truth was that he had absolutely no idea why Katherine had really returned to Mystic Falls in the first place but she had seemed scared of someone and no matter what had happened in the past he knew that he wanted to make sure that nothing happened to her if he could. Now a stranger was on his doorstep, one who would hopefully hold the answers that he needed. Elijah seemed to know what was going on and considering he came from the same family he knew that he needed to watch his words carefully and make sure that he got as much information out of the man as he could. “She has, we’re friends,” Stefan nodded. He hadn’t been sure what to make of Tatia at first but Elena had seemed to trust her, or at the very least she had wanted to see if what the girl was saying checked out, and the more time Stefan had spent with her the more he had come to realise that she was being completely honest with him. Elena had been the one to urge him to give Tatia a place to stay and now he was glad that she had done. He trusted her and listening to her story had been a bit of a shock but it had just made him more determined than ever to keep her safe. “I hope you’re right. She seems on her way to moving on from what happened, the last thing she needs is for something to stop that,” he added. He knew that it wasn’t always easy to move on from the horrors of your past, it had taken Stefan a long time to move on from everything that Katherine had done and even now there were some things that still affected him but he was doing the best he could and Tatia seemed to be doing the same. “You’d better come in,” he added as he moved aside to let Elijah in, knowing that it would be safer for them to talk inside. “What does he plan on doing with them?” he asked, already feeling like the ritual Elijah had mentioned was something that he was going to have to try and put a stop to. This, Elijah imagined as he stood on Stefan Salvatore’s doorstep, would undoubtedly be seen by his brother as his first overt act of war. The love that had once been between him and Tatia, that was still there on his part and perhaps on hers, would excuse the fact that he hadn’t notified Niklaus of her return immediately, but going behind his brother’s back to warn others of what was to come, that was a betrayal Niklaus would not easily forgive. More than once he had felt the dagger his brother kept for him slip between his ribs for lesser offences. For a thousand years his brother had sought a way out of the bonds their mother had placed upon him and now it was within his grasp once more Niklaus would be more paranoid than ever. Every little slight, every coincidence, every attempt to prevent another life from being taken, would be one more excuse for Niklaus to finally shatter that bond. All that time it had been upheld, despite the heartache it had caused, despite how many times he and Rebekah had needed to set their own happiness aside to keep their word. Now it would be Niklaus himself who would likely break it. He wouldn’t see that there might possibly be another way, that his elder brother didn’t need to have his heart shattered yet again. Elijah was certain that if Niklaus’ ritual came to pass then the man he had always sworn lay beneath that brittle surface, the man who could be reformed, would be dead, killed by the same hand that slaughtered a doppelganger, a wolf, a vampire.
There was all too great a chance that Tatia would be the doppelganger in question. In no uncertain terms she had told him out at the cabin that she was willing to sacrifice herself to save Elena. If he had his way then neither would need to die but Elijah had come to terms with the fact that he rarely got his way centuries ago. In this case he could not step away from matters though and so he was here, placing another line of defence with the younger vampire. It would be a fierce line of defence at that, if Stefan’s immediately bold words were anything to go by. ”She told me as much and it is only right that she told you,” Elijah said, his voice still low and courteous. ”I imagine you can understand the difficulty in controlling the hunger immediately after turning.” He had spent a thousand years unaware of his actions but the guilt had weighed heavily ever since Tatia’s words had unlocked the memory. The guilt had his gaze ticking down towards his hands, the now spotless hands, before Stefan’s words had him looking up, a fierce light in his eye. ”I would willingly give my life to prevent anything from stopping that. Tatia lost the life she should have had because of her connection to me once, I will not let it happen again.” He had been the one to make her break her vow to her son once, he had walked to his mother, tears as hot on his face as Tatia’s blood had been on his hands, he had pushed it from his mind for a thousand years, he would stop it happening again. Elijah stepped into the house, moving in to the hallway before he unbuttoned his coat and turned to Stefan. ”My brother plans on performing a ritual to break a spell our mother placed upon him a thousand years ago,” he explained. Civility and a sense of decorum stayed his tongue and the truth a moment longer. Elijah had long believed in a right way to conduct a discussion and that right way didn’t involve telling a young man his girlfriend might well be slaughtered two moments after he welcomed a guest into his home.

There always seemed to be so much going on in Mystic Falls and the truth was that Stefan was starting to feel like he and his friends just couldn’t catch a break. No sooner had the town started to recover from the activation of the Gilbert device than rumours reached them of an Original Vampire who was looking for Elena. Even now Stefan had no idea why Klaus wanted her but it was no longer just Elena’s life on the line, Tatia was in danger too and Stefan couldn’t deny that he was worried. He had originally let Tatia stay at the Boarding House at Elena’s request and he would be lying if he said that he hadn’t been a little hesitant at first given everything that he knew about Katherine but he had quickly learned that Tatia was completely different to Katherine and Elena. Now she was his friend too and he knew that he was going to do everything in his power to make sure that nothing bad happened to her. Her story was an incredible one, he couldn’t even begin to imagine what it must have been like for her to have died a thousand years ago only to be brought back to a completely different time. It had to be overwhelming to say the least but she seemed to be coping and he was doing everything he could to help her. Tatia had told him about Elijah and what had happened between them in the past and even though it was enough to make Stefan wary of the guy he could see that Tatia still cared about him so he knew he had to hear him out. After what he had heard about Klaus he was a little surprised that Elijah had showed up seemingly wanting to help but he knew that it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. At this point he knew that he and his friends could use all the help they could get so he knew that it would be worth it to try and figure something out. As Elijah spoke, Stefan found himself nodding. “I know that difficulty all too well,” he admitted. “You won’t find any judgement here, at least not from me. I still can’t control that hunger when I drink human blood but I can assure you that Tatia is safe here,” he added. He wasn’t too sure what, if anything, Tatia had told Elijah about him but he could definitely understand the struggle considering that it was one he faced every day when he gave in to his hunger. “I’m glad because she deserves to be happy,” he nodded, unable to ignore the fact that he was beginning to gain a little respect for Elijah. He knew what it was like to have to live with guilt every day and want to make it right but it was rarely that easy. A lot of the horrors in Stefan’s past were down to lives that he had taken and he knew that he would never be able to make that right but it seemed that Elijah might have that chance with Tatia now and Stefan knew that he and Elena would do what they could to protect her too. Closing the door behind Elijah, Stefan studied him carefully for a moment as he spoke once more. “That’s what he needs one of the girls for, isn’t it?” he breathed as the realisation struck. “How does he plan on breaking the curse?” he asked, knowing that there had to be more to the story. For most life was a maze. The twists and turns up ahead unknown until they were taken, traps waiting in that shadowy future. No path through it was straightforward or without dead ends. No matter how hard you strained your eyes you couldn’t see what was coming. Psychics might have pled otherwise and he’d received warnings from a few with the gift over the years but Elijah had never believed that they could know all that fate had laid out for a life. His own maze had been larger than most, the turns more numerous, the traps big enough to swallow those that had walked part of it with him. Those of his family had been just as big, intersecting with his own, their footsteps alongside his for so much of the journey but as he prepared to reveal the truth to Stefan Salvatore, as he waited to betray his brother, Elijah knew that from now on their paths were likely to diverge, his ending with his coffin, his brother’s in a dead end he hoped would stay his hand for another five hundred years at least. Life could not end for them, not the same way it could for Tatia or Lukas or Stefan himself, it could only continue … here in Mystic Falls with the woman he still loved despite what he had done to her in his first hunger, or in the darkness, paying the painful price for choosing to protect her in the way he once should’ve done, in the way he had failed to protect Katherine, the first woman to open his heart after he had closed it off for five hundred years.
Elijah supposed guilt had a lot to do with surreptitiously stepping away from his brother. If it wasn’t for the risk to Tatia’s life, to the life of a girl who had descended from her, would he have tried so hard to prevent Niklaus from performing the ritual? The truth was he couldn’t be sure but chances were that he wouldn’t have. Lives hadn’t held much significance for him in the last century and a half, not since Celeste and the last home they’d had was taken from them. Undoubtedly Stefan Salvatore had heard of the torment that tended to follow his family, it had passed into legend along with the effects of their blood. He also knew enough not to bring condemnation swinging towards his guest. Elijah’s jaw tightened faintly as he inclined his head in gratitude. ”I would not have allowed her to stay if I had thought she wasn’t,” he assured Stefan. ”A man aware of his faults is far more likely to keep a grip on them than one who is blind to it all.” And for so long he had been blind, the vow he had made to his siblings keeping him blindfolded.
Stefan’s response to his vow to protect Tatia had him pausing for a moment, the light in his eye softening a little. Did Stefan think that he was capable of making Tatia happy? He had been so doubtful of it himself, his family, his love for her only bringing her pain and death so far. Swallowing convulsively, Elijah curled one hand into a fist. ”I hope I can bring her happiness,” he said softly. Whether that was with him or with his family gone. Perhaps the latter would be best, at least then she would be beyond Niklaus’ grasp. Fingers falling away from his coat, Elijah nodded. ”The ritual requires blood,” he managed coolly. ”The blood of the three species tied together in the original spell. A vampire, a werewolf and a doppelganger. We did not know of their existence when my mother turned us, only when one appeared five hundred years later, looking so much like Tatia.” Katherine’s life had been cut cruelly short by her attempt to escape Niklaus’ plan. Five hundred years she had been forced to run and now there was a chance another would have to make the same choice.

Not knowing everything about a threat was something that Stefan knew that he should perhaps be used to by now but the truth was that he hated it. He had been caught out in the past when someone he had been trying to stop had done something completely unexpected, it had been that way when Violet had been turned into a vampire and again when the Gilbert device had been activated. While it was true that he and his friends were good in a crisis having something like this looming over their heads wasn’t something that he liked at all. He knew a little about what Klaus was planning but he still didn’t know exactly how he planned on breaking the curse or what the other ingredients were. At the moment knowing that Elena and Tatia were both in danger was enough to put Stefan on edge but he knew that there had to be more to it than that. Whenever he tried to find out more information about it there seemed to be something blocking him and that didn’t sit well with the vampire. When the people he cared about were in danger he would be the first to admit that he would stop at nothing to keep them safe but it was difficult to do that when at the moment they were playing the game with only half of the information at their disposal. If they continued going into this blind the way they were then Stefan knew that someone could easily end up getting hurt and he refused to let that happen. “From what I know of Tatia I think it would have been difficult for you to convince her otherwise,” Stefan admitted. Tatia could be quite headstrong when she wanted to be so he knew that she wouldn’t have taken being told that she couldn’t stay somewhere she felt comfortable lightly. Still, Elijah seemed happy with the living arrangements and Stefan was glad that the man had so much faith in him. His control had slipped in the past but he was determined not to let that happen again and in a way having a human living under the same roof gave him more motivation than ever to stick to the animal blood diet. “I hope so too. She deserves it, you both do from what I can gather,” he nodded. Stefan would be the first to admit that he was protective of her but Elijah made her happy and he hoped that they would be able to find a way to make it work the same way that he and Elena were. As Elijah spoke again, Stefan found himself nodding once more as he said that the ritual required blood. His next words were enough to catch Stefan off guard, however, and he let those words sink in for a moment. “Three sacrifices,” he breathed. “There has to be a way to stop this madness. Do you know who else Klaus plans on using?” he asked, knowing that they needed to be prepared if someone else in the group was in danger. ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Had the threat been from Esther or Mikael, telling the truth about it would perhaps have been simpler. Over the last thousand years he had begun to feel some sympathy for his mother at the very least but when it came to the side of them that reflected what their children had become Elijah knew he could rightfully be unapologetic. His mother had known that she was perverting the ways of nature when she had attempted to render her children immortal, she had been aware of what she was doing when she had sent her husband after the monsters they had become to stop them. Mikael had chased them down with a fervour unmatched by any they had encountered in the years since. There was nothing redeemable in either of them, no way to bring them back to who they had been, or in Mikael’s case, who he could have been without his callousness, without his bitterness towards the son who had not asked to be the child of an affair. In Niklaus, however, there had always been a sign of the boy he had once been, the one desperate for the approval of a man he had believed to be his father, a man who had openly hated him. Taking Marcellus in, Niklaus had attempted to be the father Mikael had never been to him. Ultimately he had left New Orleans, believing that son dead at Mikael’s hand and some might then have believed that anything redeemable within him was gone but even now, hearing that Tatia had spoken for him, Elijah was certain that there was still something of the young Niklaus left, something that didn’t need this ritual to find the strength that had always been there within him.
Perhaps that was the naïve part of himself talking, the part he had always believed to be human. That part had certainly fooled itself before. It had been willing to believe in his mother’s guilt for a thousand years. The moment the truth had fallen from Tatia’s lips, Elijah had been able to see clearly what had happened that day. Showing the strength he had admired in her all those centuries ago Tatia had found it within herself to forgive him for his crimes. That gave him no right to dictate where she remain now and the thought that he could even try had his mouth slanting faintly in amusement now. ”It has always been impossible to change Tatia’s mind once it has settled on something. When she believes in it she will move heaven and earth to make certain it happens.” She had attempted to once, refusing death to raise her son … and he had snatched that opportunity away from her. He was determined not to do that again. It was why he had come today, why he was so hell bent on choosing her over his brother’s ultimate freedom. Elijah opened his fist again, staring at it as though it were still marked with Tatia’s blood. ”My happiness doesn’t matter half as much as hers,” he said softly. He had lost the right to his as the balance of his crimes had swung way out of level. This was his way of making up for it, exchanging the crime of betraying a brother with the saving of more than one life. No matter the cost this would be worth it. Elijah’s eyes were dark, his mouth tight as he looked back up at Stefan. ”Five hundred years ago it was stopped and a young woman paid for it with her life. I won’t let that happen again. Other than Elena or Tatia, I have no names. I doubt Niklaus has much preference other than those who make themselves an easy target. There are wolves in Mystic Falls are there not?” If there weren’t then Niklaus and his witches would draw them here. His brother would let no detail of this plan escape him this time if he could help it.

There was so much about what was going on in Mystic Falls that Stefan still felt like he was never going to get his head around but he was doing the best he could. One thing he knew for sure was that he needed to protect the people he cared about and the rest of the town as well if he could manage it. He knew that it wasn’t all on him, there were other people in town who knew the truth about the world that they lived in but that could be just as dangerous at times. Mystic Falls was the town he had grown up in and the truth was that it was the only place that had ever felt like home to him so he knew that he wanted to keep it safe as much as possible. There was a time when he might have thought that it was never going to work out the way he wanted it to but now he knew better than to give up. For the first time in years he had a lot to lose and he knew that that was true of other people in the town too. There were families living in Mystic Falls, people who thought that the town was their home just as much as he did and he knew that he didn’t want anything to happen to change that. Elena and Tatia were the ones he knew about that were definitely in danger but from what he had heard they weren’t the only ones who were at risk. Three sacrifices were needed for the ritual and something told Stefan that Klaus wasn’t going to stop there either. He didn’t know what the Original’s plans were but having Elijah’s insight might just prove to be invaluable. It was clear that he cared about Tatia and he seemed to want to protect Elena and the rest of the town as well so even though Stefan knew better than to blindly trust the man before him he knew that he needed to believe that there was another person in town wanting to do the right thing. Right now Stefan wasn’t sure how they were going to be able to find a way to stop the ritual from going ahead but if they couldn’t do that then he knew that they needed to at least find a way to make sure that those who were used didn’t stay dead for long. He wasn’t even sure if that was possible but the fact that Tatia had been brought back from the dead was proof enough that it could be done. For the time being he knew that he would settle for just finding out as much about what was going to happen as he could and thankfully Elijah seemed happy to fill him in. “I’m starting to see that,” Stefan admitted, unable to stop a smile forming on his face as he spoke. It had been a little strange at first learning that there was another girl out there who looked like Elena and Katherine but he had quickly come to realise that Tatia was her own person and the two of them had become friends during the time she had been staying at the Boarding House. There was still a lot about her past that he probably still didn’t know but he knew enough to trust her he knew that he would do whatever he could in order to protect her too. “I’m sure she would disagree with that but it is good to know that you put her first,” he nodded. After everything she had been through he was glad that she had someone else looking out for her and it was clear just how much Elijah cared about her. As Elijah explained how the ritual was stopped in the past, Stefan found the pieces quickly falling into place. “Katherine,” he nodded. He had never known just how she had become a vampire but now it all made sense. As he asked if there were wolves in Mystic Falls, Stefan’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “I believe there are. I never would have believed they existed a few years ago but I’m starting to see that there is more out there than I realised.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Apologising for his brother’s crimes had become second nature for Elijah since they had been twisted by their mother’s magic but admitting to his own had been far more difficult. Thanks to his mother he had spent a thousand years in denial over the blood staining his own hands. He had laid the guilt at his mother’s feet time and time again. Laying it at his own made the words stick in his throat. Tatia had urged him not to let it happen but Elijah knew it would take time for him to admit to what had happened with Tatia easily. It was less agonising to push the thought from his mind, to hold on to the fact that she was still the girl he had known, the girl he had fallen in love with. Beautiful, strong, stubborn enough to put all others around her to shame … and she had. In refusing to follow her husband onto his pyre, Tatia had forged a path for herself at a time when it was almost unheard of for a woman to do so. He had admired her strength then, had fallen head over heels for it, and Elijah continued to do so now. Although he could almost see her undoing in it. Tatia would not allow him to be swallowed by darkness and he appreciated that, but Elijah could also see her walking right into that darkness in an attempt to dissipate it. He wasn’t ready to lose her, wasn’t ready to sacrifice the second chance they had been given just to make his brother happy. Family could not trump everything else yet again.
Once upon a time Elijah had put his heart above his brother’s happiness, he was certain that he could do it again given the chance and perhaps without guilt. This wasn’t just about what he deserved, it was about Tatia and the life she should have had the first time too. She had touched lives since her resurrection, Elijah could see that in the smile his comment had brought to the younger Salvatores face. ”It was what drew both my brother and myself to her once upon a time. Few women had the strength to do such things in our time.” Few had the strength to do such things now, most turning away with only their own life in mind. Dark eyes rose from the spot beyond his palm that he had been staring at to meet Stefan’s. For a moment Elijah almost looked past him too but then his mind was drawn back here and Elijah returned his nod. ”She would disagree but it’s the truth. I’ve had a thousand years of life, more than any should have. She has had but a brief moment of life, it’s not enough.” It was not enough for the girl who had descended from her either. Just as Tatia, and even Katerina, had deserved more, so did Elena. Five hundred years ago Katerina had been forced into running, into taking her own life in some twisted attempted to save it and had been punished for it since. ”Katerina,” Elijah breathed. ”Her hand was forced when she discovered what was to happen. She took something from my brother and put herself beyond his reach.” The repercussions were that now another had to suffer in her place. A doppelganger, a vampire, undoubtedly one who had wronged his brother all those centuries ago and a werewolf. The latter might now by the most difficult prospect. ”The wolves have been here since before my own family even called this place home. They are the reason for my mother’s actions, my brother’s trapped werewolf side the evidence of the sin she committed. Are there any in this town you suspect of being one now?” Elijah knew it would be difficult to offer a blatant warning but at the very least he could make finding one more difficult for Niklaus.

There were still times even now when Stefan found himself thinking about the way that things used to be before Katherine had come into his life and the only person he’d had to count on had been Damon. For a little while he had thought that he and Valerie would follow through with their plan and run away together but she hadn’t shown up and he hadn’t seen or heard from her since so he had been left with no choice but to move on with his life. His father had done his best to keep him from the truth about what was really going on in Mystic Falls while he was growing up but by letting Katherine into their home he had in a way sealed all of their fates. Stefan had felt drawn to her from the very beginning and it had been the same for Damon. They had both fallen for her in their own way and she had used that to her advantage. She had wanted both of them by her side for eternity but it hadn’t worked out that way – instead she had fled leaving the two of them as newly turned vampires without anyone to guide them. Had it not been for Lexi then Stefan was pretty sure that he would have been lost all those years ago but she had pulled him back from the edge and she had done so countless times since then as well. For years Stefan had tried to convince himself that Katherine had compelled his love and for a long time it had worked but in the end he had been left with no choice but to face the truth that he really had loved her after all. That was all in the past now though and he had moved on with his life. He knew that something had to have happened to make Katherine the way she was because there had been times when they were together where she was completely different to the way she was around everyone else but he didn’t know much about her past at all. Now she just seemed to be in Mystic Falls to cause trouble and Stefan just had to hope that she wouldn’t try and interfere with his relationship with Elena. He hadn’t planned on falling for her but that was exactly what had happened and he knew that he would do whatever he had to in order to keep her safe, even if that meant working with the brother of the person who wanted to kill her. “Few women seem to have that strength now but those that do always seem to find their way to Mystic Falls,” Stefan admitted, unable to stop a smile from forming on his face as he spoke. Since arriving in Mystic Falls he had met some of the strongest people he had ever come across in Elena, Tatia, Caroline and Bonnie and he had a feeling that there were others in town that he had yet to come across too. “I agree, it’s not enough,” Stefan nodded. He couldn’t shake the thought that in the end one of the girls was going to be used in Klaus’ ritual but if there was any other way then Stefan knew that he would do whatever it took in order to keep both of them safe. “Klaus is the reason Katherine became a vampire?” he asked, the pieces suddenly beginning to fall into place. There were times when they were together when he had seen hints of vulnerability in Katherine but the next moment they were gone, replaced by the mask that she put on whenever she was around other people. Stefan had always suspected that horrors lay in her past but he had never truly let himself think too much about what she might have been through and what might have caused her to become who she was now. As Elijah asked about werewolves, Stefan’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment. “There are a few. There is a group of teenagers who are new to town and I get the feeling that at least some of them are more than human,” he explained. He didn’t know for sure just yet but there was something about Scott and his friends that made him think that there was more to them than met the eye. “If they are then we need to warn them, they don’t deserve to be dragged into this any more than Elena and Tatia do.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

‘Those who cannot remember the past are doomed to repeat it’. He’d first read those words around the turn of the last century, a dusty study in Paris, Elijah thought, a volume of George Santayana fresh from America, the paper rich and creamy beneath his fingertips. They’d been a blow to the pit of his stomach, enough to sour the burgundy he’d been drinking. In his position he thought he’d been unable to forget the past. It lodged in his mind, swam in circles beneath the surface until memories would pop free to grate his thoughts afresh. So little had he really known then. He’d been encouraged to forget that past by his mother, supposedly for his own sake. His thirst that first night after being turned had resulted in Tatia’s death. Esther had bidden him to lock that memory away, to bury it down deep and always keep his hands clean. For close to two thousand years he had done just as she’d asked and where it had it gotten them all? Right back here with Niklaus again threatening to wet the ground Mystic Falls was built upon with the blood of its populace again. The moment Tatia had told him on the side of the road that he had been the one to take her life he had sworn to himself that he would not be the cause of her death yet again. Most wouldn’t have expected him to turn against his brother to keep his word in that regard but Elijah knew that it would be the only way to keep them all safe. It was something he couldn’t do alone. They would need every available set of hands in town to make sure that Niklaus was even less successful with his ritual this time around. A young woman had already done the inconceivable just to avoid her fate, and in doing so had damned the young man before him.
Coming to Stefan to ask for his help had been a risk but Elijah didn’t believe he had much choice. Niklaus had heard the same rumours he had of a doppelganger being here in Mystic Falls and it might only be days before his brother arrived with wholesale slaughter in mind. Elena and Tatia, both, would have sworn that they were capable of taking care of themselves but that inner strength would not do much to sway Niklaus. Still, he could help but admire it in them both and the smile on Stefan’s face told him that younger Salvatore brother felt the same way. ”The town had always drawn those with strength,” he admitted. And so often those self-same strong people were chewed up and spat out here. He’d had enough of that happening for a thousand lifetimes. ”So you understand why I cannot allow my brother his wish?” Elijah asked. To free Niklaus werewolf side was to damn three people. That had already happened to Katherine. Elijah’s expression grew grim as he nodded his head. ”It was the only way she could see to stop my brother from using her in the ritual. Only a living doppelganger’s blood can be used. To turn oneself is to be no longer entirely living.” In her eternal grave Katerina had certainly become cold. Unfortunately being a werewolf didn’t offer the same protection. Dark eyes narrowed here as Stefan informed him that there were a few in town. ”They certainly need to be warned,” he agreed hoarsely. ”Nobody deserves what my brother will do to them, let alone those whose lives have barely begun. A doppelganger, a werewolf, a vampire. If we can put any one of those beyond my brother’s reach then we have a chance to foiling him again.” The latter certainly couldn’t be removed from the equation in a town were there were so many who relied on blood but the other two, if they could just keep them protected all would be safe. Except perhaps for the brother who had betrayed Niklaus yet again.
