Right now, Connie had the best bodyguard in Mystic Falls—Aurora. She’d promised Damien she’d keep an eye on his sister while he was off scraping souls off the pavements of America. Her job was to keep Connie out of trouble and make sure she wasn’t drowning in the strange new world she’d been thrust into. The thought of being ripped out of heaven and placed in Mystic Falls sent a shiver down Aurora’s spine. It was a place she’d never experience. The bouncers at the gates upstairs weren’t about to let a thousand-year-old vampire with a kill count in the thousands through their pearly gates. The night before, they armed Connie with a few dollar bills and let her loose in Mystic Falls on her own. Aurora had given her number to Connie, making it clear she should call if anything happened—Aurora could be at the casino in under five seconds. When no call came, Aurora assumed the night had gone smoothly. But by morning, the apartment was eerily quiet. There was no movement from Connie’s bedroom, nor could Aurora detect the familiar heartbeat vibrating through the walls. She pushed open Connie’s bedroom door, only to find the bed empty, with no sign she’d ever come home. Aurora didn’t sound the alarm just yet. She was determined not to subject Connie to the same overprotectiveness her brother did. If Connie wasn’t back by 10 a.m., she’d call Damien. Luckily, just after 8 a.m., Connie came through the front door. Aurora exhaled a sigh of relief, quickly noticing Connie was still wearing the same clothes from the night before. It didn’t take much to figure out what had happened. Aurora smirked, holding back a laugh. “So, I am assuming you met someone at the casino last night? Someone of the male variety?” she teased, still lounging on the couch with her coffee in hand. “Do not fret. Your secret is safe with me.” She raised her hand, mimicking a little cross over her heart. CONNIE BECK

━ hope on this side of the grave ━ CONNIE HAD SO MUCH FUN LAST NIGHT. SHE didn’t think it was possible to have more fun now than she’d had in high school, but a lot more stuff was permissible now. Like, every gosh darn woman she’d seen at the casino was showing a ton of skin. Well, good for them. Connie didn’t think that’d ever be her (who knew, though), but she wasn’t gonna tell anyone that it was immoral or anything. In her mind, she was still a free-spirited youth, and she was excited for all the new things she had to learn. Yeah, sometimes it was a lot, but she’d get through it. She had Damien.
Plus, some men were still old-fashioned and nice, like Hector. Sure, he’d agreed to take her home before doing all the usual things like asking to go steady, meeting her parents, etc, etc, but there were a million reasons why he couldn’t! First of all, that probably wasn’t standard anymore. Second, her parents were dead. And third, that was not what she’d wanted last night! She wanted the experience of losing her virginity before someone sent her back to Heaven, and, honestly, that could probably happen at any moment. It was so quick last time.
Connie walked home with her heels in her hand, totally unaware that this was a classic trope for women. She wondered why she kept getting little smirks or disapproving looks from the old people out and about so early.
What she could wait for was explaining to Damien where she’d been all night. She promised she’d call him from one of those cell phones if she needed to, and she hadn’t needed to. But she still should’ve checked in to say she was alive.
When she opened the apartment door, Connie did it quietly, then turned the knob as she closed it to mitigate the sound. She really hoped Damien’s reaper abilities didn’t come with, like, crazy-good hearing or something. That would be awful.
She began to slink towards the bathroom, but froze when she saw Aurora, Damien’s girl. Now, see, he’d probably asked her to go steady. ‘Cause their mama raised them right.
Connie gave Aurora a sheepish smile, all teeth and little amusement, until she promised to keep this a secret. She blew out a heavy breath and relaxed, then dropped her shoes to the floor without much care, letting them hit the ground with a loud plunk. “Thanks, you’re real cool.” She grinned, practically skipping over to the couch before she flopped down beside Aurora like they’d known each other for years. Her smile only widened.
“Yeah. That place was bitchin’, and then this guy, all smooth and stuff, came up and bought us a bottle of wine to share. It was a hundred bucks! He musta been rich,” She sighed wistfully, dropping onto the back of the couch and staring at the ceiling like she was lost in a daze before she grinned at Aurora again. “Sooo dreamy. And, y’know, the last guy I was sweet on got me into that accident, so…” Connie didn’t really know what it meant. Maybe that she was trying to relive what she hadn’t been able to experience, maybe she was just happy she didn’t die this time, that it was hard trusting a guy again.
“Also, I’m sorry, but do women… always dress like that?” She spit out a partly-flabbergasted, partly-amused laugh. “Every getup had a hemline above the knee, and the skinniest straps I’ve ever seen. Plus, their necklines were, like, here!” She exclaimed, pointing to her bellybutton. Just ‘cause she wasn’t gonna tell them off for wearin’ it didn’t mean she didn’t still think it was crazy.
