━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS HADN’T INTENDED TO WALK IN ON… THAT. It was far worse than Linc’s birthday, when the witch━Cassie━merely had less clothes on than what was appropriate. But they’d been sleeping. They were doing far more than just sleeping when he walked in this time.
He’d intended on grabbing something from their hotel room before heading out to a restaurant with Hector, and now he could not even remember what it was. He’d opened the door and walked in quickly, leaving it ajar behind him for Hector, and took one step into the hallway before he saw━and heard━what was going on.
Linc and Cassie. On the pull-out couch. Intertwined.
It was different when it’d been his house. That was disrespectful on both of their parts, but this was a hotel room on vacation. They’d clearly assumed Magnus would be out for the rest of the day, and he’d hoped that by separating their sleeping quarters, they’d be deterred, but, clearly, there was no stopping them.
“Good God.” Was all he’d said before leaving in a blur, not stopping until he was on the small road in front of their building.
He still wasn’t sure how he felt about their relationship. Cassie was a witch, and Magnus still remembered how she’d so easily sent Linc into his previous spiral. He’d claimed it wasn’t her fault, but Magnus didn’t fully believe that. But she’d helped him cure Hector and Linc, helped him save their lives, and, if he was being honest, she’d done most of the heavy lifting. He’d softened to her during that time, had finally sent the dagger through Linc’s heart after he’d attacked her, but he never planned on seeing this. More than just being awkward, it was proof that their relationship was going strong. It hadn’t fizzled out as he’d hoped, and it likely wouldn’t anytime soon.
“I need that drink.” Magnus puffed to Hector.
He was uncharacteristically quiet until they settled into their table at the bar on the beach and had downed his first drink. It was sugary, and fruity, and he was surprised that he didn’t hate it. However, it definitely wasn’t what he needed.
“I don’t want ‘im to be like me.” Magnus said finally, then sipped at the dark liquid of his next drink━a real one. “I don’t want ‘im to throw away ‘is life on a girl who won’t love ‘im as she should. ‘E told me ‘e isn’t, but what does ‘e know?” He grumbled, then added under his breath, “‘E’s just a boy.”

Linc was a kid with needs—the same needs both Hector and Magnus have. Hector kept quiet about the conversation he’d had with Linc back in the stone about those needs, though. He couldn’t understand why Magnus was being such a prude about everything. Maybe it all boiled down to the fact that Cassie was a witch? Who knows. Either way, Hector tried to stay out of it when they were back in the real world. This was an issue between a dad and his son, something Hector had no experience in. But that became impossible when they walked into the apartment and found Cassie and Linc together. The horror on everyone’s face was priceless—everyone except Hector, who was barely holding back laughter. Magnus bolted out of the apartment instantly, leaving Hector behind. “I guess we’re even now? You’ve seen mine... I’ve seen... yeah,” Hector said to Linc with a grin before stepping out of the living room to follow Magnus. He eventually caught up to his best friend, still stifling laughter. “Sure,” Hector replied with a nod. He was craving a strong drink by now. Their walk to the bar was unnervingly silent. Usually, they’d be talking nonsense the entire way there. Once seated opposite Magnus, Hector patiently waited for him to say something about what they had just witnessed, but Magnus stayed quiet until after he downed his first drink—a drink that didn’t even look remotely appealing. Hector sipped his whiskey, listening as Magnus finally opened up. “He is just a boy, yes, but he can’t be deprived of love for eternity otherwise he’ll end up like us… miserable old men.” There was a flicker of a smile on his face, “He’s gotta make these mistakes on his own and… well, I don’t think Cassie is a mistake. She clearly loves him… don’t you agree?” He thought it was obvious. MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ YES, OF COURSE HECTOR MADE sense━Magnus never intended to strip the boy of any kind of happiness. He didn’t want to be a “helicopter parent,” either, but Linc had been through so much… he was only being cautious. His past may lead him to make poor decisions. Sure, Magnus had a good influence on him now, but how many years had Lincoln been neglected? Taught poor reasoning skills? His knee-jerk reaction may not be a good option… he might not catch some of the warning signs that Magnus (or anyone else, for that matter) would. Magnus had no idea what that girl was saying to him in private, and while she seemed sweet… she was still a witch.
Magnus smiled sadly at Hector’s semi-joke. It was gone by the time Hector continued, asking that question, the one that made Magnus’ heart feel heavy. He wanted Linc to experience that. He wanted Linc to know what it was like to have a woman who cared for him in a way no one else could. But would they last? And when she inevitably had to make the choice, how much would that break him?
“I know,” Magnus puffed, not answering Hector’s question for the moment. “I know I ‘ave to let ‘im experience in on ‘is own. I know I ‘ave to let ‘im feel love, the good and th’bad. But it ‘urts.” He sighed, looking at Hector wearily. “It ‘urts seein’ your child live through that and not knowin’ ‘owta ‘elp━knowin’ you can’t ‘elp.” He swallowed thickly. “I know she loves ‘im. It was obvious when we were workin’ on that cure.” The cure that ended up being Magnus’ blood.
He took another swig from his glass before continuing, “But one day they’re gonna ‘aveta make a choice, and ‘umans… they age so damn quickly.” Magnus puffed out a breath, “And if she chooses ‘im, she might resent ‘im for it. ‘Ow long can two immortal people really stay together and stand it?” He asked, then slowly shook his head. “If ‘e falls again, ‘e might not get back up.” And while Magnus couldn’t put Linc in a padded room, he certainly wished to protect him. He always would.

Hector tried to picture what he would have done if he found his son in bed with a girl. It was impossible to envision. But he knew it ran deeper than finding Linc and Cassie in bed together. Magnus was looking to the future, not just the next three years but the next thirty years. Linc was immortal and Cassie wasn’t– a classic problem. That was the heart of the issue. One day, Linc would lose Cassie. He remained silent as Magnus continued talking, sipping on his drink. They both knew love operated differently for vampires. It was either you choose someone to be with forever–truly forever–or suffer through a heartbreak at some point. “She’s a witch. She can slow down her ageing to some extent.” Hector said, but they both knew it wasn’t enough. Eventually, mortality would catch up with her, and she’d be an old woman while Linc remained the same. “I believe two people can be together for eternity.” Had Linc found his eternal love though? In the grand scheme of things it was early days. “He’ll get back up, I know he will.” Magnus and Hector had been dragged down to the depths of darkness and both of them had made it through to the other side. Magnus somehow navigated the darkness on his own, meanwhile Hector had Magnus to guide him. “You helped me bounce back when I was at my lowest and you’ll do exactly the same for him… we’ll both help him if he falls.” Whether he realised it or not Linc was surrounded by a support network of people who refused to let him fall. Ultimately, though, it was a conversation Linc and Cassie would have to face together. Their future was uncertain. “How would you feel if he turned her?” Hector asked, voicing the question every vampire had to consider when they fell in love with a human. MAGNUS DAYNE
