Selene knew Sonny had siblings. It was the story Koschei fed to her when they met, something so she believed she could relate to him. But then Sonny showed himself, revealing his real age meaning these siblings were either dead or almost dead- if they existd in the first place. Lies stacking upon lies with Koschei, but by this point nothing surprised her when it came to him. There was barely a flicker of shock on her face when Connie showed up at the hotel room, demanding to see Sonny. At least Connie was polite enough to use the door, unlike Damien. Selene explained it was impossible to see Sonny because of his current situation, but it turned out Connie wanted to see the demon. All Selene could do was offer the other woman a shrug, explaining she had no idea where he was or when he’d be back. Just because she wasn’t shocked by Connie’s sudden return from the dead didn’t mean she wasn’t trying to figure out why Koschei had brought her back. There must be a reason. Both Damien and Connie had no idea either. Either way, she wasn’t going to pour too much time into figuring out why. She wanted zero part of this Beck family drama that was brewing. She had her own family problems to deal with. Her brothers were out there, still searching for answers, unknowing to them their older sister was close to breaking the curse. So damn close. With Koschei away for hours and hours it gave her the opportunity to sit down and search for a spell. She studied the original spell too many times to count but failed to figure out a counter spell, mainly because she had no idea what she was doing. It wasn’t like their dad gave them any kind of magic training growing up. They knew beginner level spells. The curse was advanced level. Selene dragged herself away from work for an hour. There was coffee in the hotel room, the cheap stuff you get in a sachet. Coffee Bean provided something marginally better. She made the short journey over to Coffee Bean. She paid zero attention to the limited number of people inside as she pushed the door open, heading straight for the counter. She glanced up at the menu on the wall, quickly taking in the drink options. “Can I have an iced matcha latte, please.” Her attention floated away to the conversation which was unfolding at the till. Selene recognised the voice immediately. She glanced in Connie’s direction, who was insisting on paying for her coffee in cash. “I’ll pay for the coffee.” She offered Connie a warm smile as her own drink was placed on the counter. She drew her phone out of her back pocket, double clicking the side button to pull up her wallet. She reached over, tapping her phone on the machine. “Cash is virtually useless in today’s society.” She commented as she picked her latte up, “Do you wanna sit down?” She gestured towards a free table near the window. Selene headed over to the table, placing her phone and latte down. “How’re you getting on with… being here?” Being thrown back into a world that had evolved so rapidly since you died. CONNIE BECK

━ hope on this side of the grave ━ CONNIE WAS SLOWLY GETTING BETTER AT THIS. The modern world was… well, she wasn’t gonna use the word terrifying. Just different. Strange. Hard to get used to.
But women could do so many things that they couldn’t before━or maybe only the rich ones could. But now everyone could! Even the poor girls who had to borrow money from their older brother!
She wanted one of those card things that Damien had, but he insisted that cash was still better and easier. Also, it was difficult to get a bank account when you were still technically dead. So, yeah, she understood why she couldn’t have one.
But, just like before, you didn’t have to have cash to have a good time. Sometimes, handsome men paid for your bottle of wine, and then you got to finally lose your virginity. Win-win!
Connie was grinning at the memories of it all the way to the Coffee Bean. Damien tried to explain that coffee wasn’t just coffee anymore, but Connie was a kid when she died, she never even had coffee before. Well, none that she liked. The assortment of sugary flavours sounded spectacular.
Her grin was gone, however, when they refused to take her cash. “I’m sorry, the till is down.”
“Down? How can it be down?” Connie furrowed her brow. She pushed the twenty dollar bill towards the woman. “It’s legal tender. Just do the math.”
“I… I can’t.” Good gosh, how had the schooling system failed this girl so terribly?
“Right. Twenty minus seven-fifty-one is twelve-forty-nine. So ya owe me that.”
“No, sorry. The till literally won’t open. It’s jammed. Mostly everyone uses card, anyway. I can’t give change, but if you wanna just tap…”
Connie just wanted one of those damn Pumpkin Spice Lattes she kept seeing advertised everywhere. Was that so hard? She wasn’t gonna let this girl keep a twelve dollar tip━the price of the coffee was already outrageous━it’d been thirty cents for a cup the last time her parents bought one on the go. “I can’t just━” She started, frustrated beyond words, when someone stepped in to pay for it instead.
It was Selene. The girl from Sonny’s motel room━his girlfriend, or something. Or the girlfriend to the demon, really. How someone could wanna be with a literal demon, Connie didn’t know, but at least she was gonna get to try a Pumpkin Spice Latte.
“With your cell phone━” She hadn’t seen that yet. Granted, she hadn’t gotten out a lot, but it was still astonishing. Maybe she’d never get used to it. “Gosh. Thank you.” Connie huffed out a sigh, moving down the counter to where her latte had already been made in the time it took her to argue about her cash. She flashed the second barista a smile, then followed Selene. “Guess so.” She didn’t really wanna hang out with the girl who was sorta keepin’ this whole demon thing runnin’, but she also didn’t have many people to talk to. And, despite her poor taste in men, Selene didn’t seem too bad.
“That’s why this world’s goin’ to the dogs.” Connie puffed indignantly, following Selene to a table. She sunk onto the chair, eyeing Selene’s phone suspiciously for a moment, then set her latte down and touched the sides not covered by the cup sleeve. Still burning hot. Probably not the best time to take a sip.
“It’s alright,” She sighed, “Weird gettin’ used to things, ‘specially because it wasn’t truly that long. I’d still be alive if I hadn’t… y’know, died.” She wrinkled her nose. It didn’t make sense, but she figured Selene understood what she meant. “Some things are the same. Most…” She shrugged, “I went out on my own a few nights ago. I met a very good lookin’ guy, total gentleman. We went back to his pad, spent the night together, and then… I left.” Connie giggled. “I ain’t seen him since! Ain’t that nifty?” Maybe not to Selene, but to Connie it was Earth-shattering.

Selene genuinely felt sorry for Connie. Being dropped into a small town decades after your death couldn’t have been easy. The world had changed so much even since Selene was a kid, so she could only imagine how overwhelming it must be for Connie. Back in her day, everything was cash, and a cup of coffee cost next to nothing compared to what it was now. She nodded at Connie’s comment. “Yep. Don’t even need to carry a card anymore.” Selene figured the way things were going, even children's books might fade away. Parents would probably start reading bedtime stories off Kindles soon—a sleek device that could hold hundreds of books without the need for bulky shelves. But if she didn’t get the answers she was seeking, Selene would be dead before that ever happened. She smiled at Connie’s quip as they moved away from the counter. One day, it’d probably be a robot standing there, serving them coffee. Hell, maybe a robot would take over her drawings too. Leaning back in her chair, Selene chuckled as Connie sighed. “You would have been standing up there as an old lady still insisting you wanted to pay with cash.” The pace of change left older generations struggling to keep up. Even her mom needed a few days to figure out how to use her iPhone, which she only used to play Candy Crush, not to keep in touch with her kids. That game was a lifeline for her mom's generation. Selene laughed quietly as Connie mentioned meeting a handsome guy. “Oh, trust me, nowadays you can hook up with someone and never speak to them again.” She took a brief pause, thinking about Koschei. That should have been a one-off but wasn’t. “There are dating apps for that now,” she added, grabbing her phone. “You can find people in your area in seconds.” With a quick swipe of her face to unlock the phone, Selene pulled up Tinder and handed it to Connie. “You swipe right if you like them, left if you don’t.” She took a sip of her coffee. She hadn’t even bothered using the app in Mystic Falls. The pool of talent seemed limited. CONNIE BECK

━ hope on this side of the grave ━ CONNIE THOUGHT ABOUT IT FOR A MOMENT, AND then she giggled, nodding a few times and beaming at Selene. Yup, she was right, Connie still would’ve been bothered about not being able to pay with cash.
Of course, Selene wasn’t amazed with Connie’s story, but she was sure any of the girls she’d gone to high school with would’ve been. She thought about looking them up, but she couldn’t contact them. Though, perhaps there was a way Damien could do it without searching the phone book or alerting them… maybe in a reaper sort of way.
Connie scoffed and shook her head, “Back in my day, it’d be unheard of. Some women were still hussies, but nobody thought much of them. Now it’s just… normal.” Which should’ve alerted her to the fact that this behaviour was wrong in some way, but, again, Connie was still just a kid trapped in an adult’s body. Sure, kids had to grow up faster back then, but not that fast. Especially not when you had two older brothers to keep you safe.
“In seconds?” She puffed out an exasperated breath. She didn’t know what ‘dating apps’ meant, so she ignored that part. It sounded like gibberish. She took Selene’s cellphone anyway, brows furrowing at the screen. “Jared…” She tapped the bottom part where text began fading away, and more of it appeared, hiding his boney face. “Six-two, and what looks like a small picture of… someone lifting weights, a tent, and a leaf.” None of it made sense to her. “Well, I don’t like that. He didn’t even say who he is.” She swiped to the left, and a big red X appeared, then another man was in his place. She moved faster this time, heading straight to his bio and reading what he’d put. On the third man, she looked up at Selene. “This is strange, but also kinda genius. Like speed dating.” Connie grinned crookedly, but it fell when she thought about Sonny. “But… why do you have to use this? Ain’t you and Sonny… goin’ steady?” So… was she bein’ unfaithful to Connie’s eldest brother?
