━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY DRIFTED FOR HER FEW DAYS IN ARUBA. SHE spent time with Tobi when he wasn’t doing a “group activity,” and lounged on the beach otherwise. Except for when she’d been at the same bar and Hector had discovered her. It amazed Penny how someone so old had kept himself from love for so long. He’d had one “great love” who’d died and he’d called it quits. Penny wished she could only be so lucky.
She’d come here to finally confront Lawrence with how she felt, but she’d given up upon seeing him with someone else. She realized she was being selfish. She tried to move on.
But she was still here.
Gathering up her things from the beach as the sun was setting, Penny began moving while still looking down at her sarong, which had gotten tangled between her legs. She tsk’d at the fabric, pulling at it one hand, a book in the other as she stepped forward, trying to walk out of the trap, and ran directly into someone’s chest.
Cursing, Penny’s head jumped up, beginning to apologize before she realized who it was. Lawrence. Fuck. She had absolutely no excuse for being here, and she wasn’t about to use Tobi as one. She wouldn’t be able to stand the hurt that would cross Lawrence’s face again━if she even still mattered to him.
“Oh. Hi.” Penny said quickly, trying to school her features out of the shocked expression they’d twisted into. “Did you follow me here?” She asked, an echo of when things were easier between them. The edge of Penny’s lips hiked upwards in a teasing grin, though━lighter than any other time she’d accused him of the same thing.

London was one of those fast paced vacations. Everyday they were doing something, usually history related thanks to Magnus. Endless museums, which sometimes started out as a guided tour with a member of staff until Magnus or Hector stepped in to tell them they were giving incorrect facts to the group. A handful of times one of them took over the tour to give them eyewitness accounts of what happened. Aruba was different. Everything was slower. They spent hours lying on the beach or swimming in the crystal clear sea. It was a damn good job he couldn’t burn though. Being in Aruba gave him some kind of travel bug too. There was a whole damn world out there beyond Mystic Falls and he’d seen a tiny fraction of it. Listening to Magnus and Hector speak about their past made Lawrence want to board a ship and sail the world, except he had no idea how to drive a boat. He could barely keep a car on the road. The twentieth rum and coke settled in his stomach as he started to drag himself away from the bar. They had a dinner reservation in two hours— which was mainly for Tobi, Kit and Cassie’s benefit. Just before he left the bar he ordered an ice cream to go, which was delivered to him in a waffle cone. It wasn’t like he was going to spoil his dinner. His dinner was the blood bags sitting in the fridge in the apartment, to be shared between him, Magnus and Linc. Upon reflection it was an interesting room allocation. Lawrence, two men who wanted to cave his head in for various reasons and Magnus, who already caved his head at one point. But so far things have been smooth. Somehow he even managed to sort things out with Linc too. Lawrence strolled along the beach, desperately trying to eat his ice cream before it melted. Little drops had already started escaping forcing him to quickly run his tongue around the edge of the cone. But suddenly he collided with someone, causing the top of his ice cream to fall to the sand. He didn’t care about the ice cream though. He was more bothered that the person he’d just literally bumped into was Penny. What the fuck? “Hey.” He tried his best to give her some kind of warm smile, pretending he wasn’t internally spiralling. He let out a hollow laugh at her comment, “All the way to Aruba? Nah. I’m here with Hector and the others from the bar.” He gave a nod in the general direction their hotel was, “You being in London I accepted was a bit of a coincidence. But here? Why are you here?” Wait. Was she Tobi’s plus one? Surely that curly haired idiot wasn’t stupid enough to invite Penny along. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY WASN’T SURE SHE’D EVER BEEN TRAPPED in a moment like this. Usually, she wasn’t trying to keep them at bay. She was loving them fully, with her whole heart, and praying that this time would be different. And, in Alice’s case, she was trying desperately to hold herself together, but her best friend already had a husband and children by then. It wasn’t the same.
Her eyes flicked down to his ice cream━now coated in sand, making it look like it’d been dipped in graham cracker crumbs or something… if she forgot that it was a few inches from her toes, which were buried in the same stuff.
He gave her a real response, a real reason, and Penny pretended to look over at the hotel’s main building just across the street━as if she didn’t know where they were staying.
London was a coincidence. Aruba, though? Who the hell went to Aruba? There wasn’t a ton of history here, either━other than the caves, she supposed, which was just about the only thing that interested her. Other than Lawrence, of course.
Neither of them had moved far enough back. She’d smacked into Lawrence, and took barely a step back, still so close that she had to crane her neck to stare up at him. So close that she could feel the buzz of his cells close to hers, the slight warmth of his skin, the pounding of his heart. “Oh, y’know,” Penny said lamely, giving him a noncommittal shrug and a sheepish smile. The act faded a moment later, though, a kind of seriousness washing over her. Like she’d been caught in the act. “I felt like I needed to be here, I guess.” Penny said softly, her eyes meeting his, wishing he could read the longing and regret in her eyes. “I think I might’ve been wrong.” Was the double-meaning obvious to him? It was to her, and it made her swallow thickly, finally pulling her eyes from his. “Sorry about your ice cream.” Penny said softly, desperate for something to break the tension palpable in the air.

Lawrence should have been happy to see Penny—he wanted to be happy—but he wasn’t. Instead it filled him with sadness. Seeing her was a sharp reminder of what he’d lost. He stood there, feeling the heat between them that had nothing to do with the Caribbean sun. Penny was so close, too close. He could’ve stepped back, but he didn’t, scared that if he did try to make a move his legs would buckle from under him. He longed to reach out and brush his thumb gently along her cheekbone. He yearned to close the gap between them, pulling her body close to his to feel her in his arms once more, but he couldn't. She didn’t really answer his question though. What was the reason she was in Aruba? The exact same place he was and Tobi too. He dropped the topic, not wanting to know the answer in case it did trace back to Tobi. His fragile heart couldn’t handle it. He glanced down at the sandy mess of ice cream near their feet, but his thoughts were nowhere near it. “Don’t worry about it.” Lawrence said quietly, his voice low, though he wasn’t sure if he meant the ice cream or whatever was pulling at her beneath the surface. Her eyes had already moved away, but Lawrence found himself searching her face, trying to piece together the layers she was hiding. Penny was always good at that—deflecting with humour, sidestepping what really mattered. “Maybe.” The words hung heavy in the air. He knew she wasn’t just talking about coming to Aruba, she was hinting towards them. He’d spent enough time with her to figure out what thoughts could have been trailing through her mind. Was there regret simmering beneath the surface for Penny? All she had to do was admit it and he’d make his way back to her. “What makes you think you might’ve been wrong, eh?” He refused to acknowledge the bubble of hope that was trying to expand in his chest because he knew she was about to pop it. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ MAYBE NOT, BECAUSE LAWRENCE HAD found other ways to occupy his time. And that was fine. She’d relinquished her hold on him (whatever hold she’d had) when she didn’t fight for him in her doorway. Maybe she did have a need to be here, and perhaps that was just to see Lawrence moving on. To allow her to move past this. Just another failed relationship under her belt━it didn’t mean anything. At least he wasn’t dead. He didn’t know, but he should’ve been thanking her for that.
“You might be more resilient than I thought.” She whispered, mostly to herself, because it likely wouldn’t make much sense to him. Hector had given up after one, so what did that say about her? That she should just stop trying after all? If he could do it, then maybe it was possible to be alone forever.
Penny sighed softly, finding his eyes, seeing a reflection of his liplock with that woman in them. “But maybe I was wrong about being here.” She ‘explained’ finally, though they both knew that wasn’t what she’d meant. “You’ve been keeping yourself occupied.” She said softly, trying not to sound accusatory. Penny looked away again. “Or so I’ve heard.” But then it sounded like she meant from Tobi, and she squeezed her lips together, irritated at herself, but unable to take it back.

Despite the swirling feeling of a dread building inside his chest somewhere deep inside there he was glad he bumped into Penny. It was buried deep inside, but he could still feel it. But what made it even worse was the fact she looked good in her bikini top and sarong. He wanted to tell her too, but bit back his comment. A quick frown formed on his face at her comment. “Vampires usually are.” He glanced at her, searching her face for something—maybe an explanation, or maybe just a hint of why she was really here. If she wasn’t here for Tobi then was she here for him? He pushed that thought from his mind, refusing to fall down that rabbit hole. She was wrong by coming to Aruba. “Maybe.” She could have tried to pretend she was there for work or vacation too, but Lawrence wouldn’t fall for that story again. Still, her words lingered in the air, unspoken accusations woven into the softness of her tone. You’ve been keeping yourself occupied. It wasn’t an accusation exactly, but there was something behind it, something she wouldn’t—or couldn’t—say outright. “A little.” He muttered quietly, not even wanting to know who told her. Tobi probably. Asshole. He looked back at her, offering a small smile. “I can’t spend forever chasing after something I can’t have.” He had some element of self respect. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY SCOFFED QUIETLY, WETLY, AT THAT. Vampires were even less resilient than the majority of her past lovers… but it didn’t matter.Maybe she could hold on a little longer, she was certainly doing better than Hector, but was she really? He quit while he was ahead and preserved his heart. He was older than she was. Maybe it was possible to last that long and not get lonely.
Or maybe he was just always lonely, and filled his life with meaningless things. Penny loved her job and her rocks, but what were they, really?
“Not more than a dragon… or a phoenix.” She said under her breath.
What did she expect? For Lawrence to beg her to stay, to tell her, after everything she’d done to him, that he wanted her here? That she was wrong, that she was supposed to be here with him?
She wanted to touch him. She might’ve, too, if she hadn’t brought up the woman he was with━maybe it was Penny’s way of putting up that roadblock so she didn’t reach out. Not yet, at least.
He didn’t deny it. And when he admitted… well, he just didn’t know how right he was. Penny found her vision going hazy, staring up at him with tears in her eyes. He looked so gorgeous now, the oranges and pinks of the setting sun glowing behind him, like a coloured halo burning around him, creating a silhouette.
“I know.” She whispered, finally reaching out now, wrapping his fingers around his arm. “It’s better this way.” Penny swallowed thickly, and she added in a croak, “I don’t want this either… but I promise it’s better. Trust me,” She smiled sadly, brown eyes swimming in tears. She tried to blink them away, but she didn’t want to stop looking at him for even a second.

Lawrence’s gaze softened as Penny’s hand settled on his arm, that fragile touch that said more than either of them could ever seem to say aloud. There was a stillness in him, an unfamiliar restraint, and he could feel her words threading through him, pulling at something he thought he’d locked away long ago. The way she looked at him—glistening eyes, voice cracking—it chipped at his composure. But she'd already seen him at his most vulnerable, at his absolute lowest. He wasn't about to let her witness that side of him again—not after the last time. Back then, she had pushed him away, and the memory still stung: the heart-wrenching moment he heard another man's voice coming from inside her apartment. Penny hadn’t even offered him a reason, hadn’t explained why they couldn’t be together. She’d just said they couldn’t, and that was that. He accepted that as best he could, forcing himself to move on from her but it was so damn difficult when she was popping up in the bar or on a beach in Aruba. Each time he saw her the memories resurfaced. How the fuck was he expected to move on from her? His heart was torn between defiance and surrender though. His lips parted for a moment as he was about to argue it wasn’t better this way. He swallowed, casting his eyes away to the horizon, where the sun was slipping under, leaving traces of warmth that would soon fade to chill. “I can't agree because you won’t tell me why.” His gaze ticked back to her face, Slowly, reluctantly, he covered her hand with his own. “But if you think it’s better, Penny… then maybe it is.” His voice was steady, but his grip on her hand said everything his words could not.
