Things had returned to somewhat normal between River and Tobi. Well, as normal as they would ever be all things considered. Just because they agreed to be just friends didn’t erase the feeling she was having for River, but Tobi had to do what he does best and ignore them. They were to be placed in a box where he would never speak of them again. They slotted nicely alongside his childhood trauma and dealing with being dead for two decades. The vacation to Aruba was what he needed to keep his mind off River. Endless frozen cocktails and blistering hot sun leaving his skin a deep golden colour. There were some evenings he knocked back too many frozen cocktails trying to keep up with the vampires and werewolves, forgetting he and Cassie were the only ones with a human tolerance. The vampires were downing entire bottles of whiskey whereas Tobi ws flat out after half a bottle. At least he didn’t vomit at any point though, even though there had been plenty of occasions he considered it. Tobi didn’t even bother telling his family he was going on holiday. They found out via his social media updates and his dad was furious, namely because his passport was connected to someone who was legally dead. It was the same argument they had when he went to Europe. Somehow nothing got flagged over there, but this time Hector had issued him with a fake passport, just like he did to the entire group, even those who didn’t need it. The world was now his oyster. The vacation was nothing but a distant memory by now. He was back at work, serving shots, dreaming of his next vacation. Maybe he and River could go somewhere. It was risky. He arrived back at the apartment just after 10pm, expecting to find River already in bed with a peppermint tea. But he pushed the door open to be greeted by River and a girl sitting on the couch looking cosy. River’s arm was draped around the blonde’s shoulder. They both spun around to face Tobi. “Hey.” He gave them both a small smile, “I’m Tobi. River’s roommate.” Who the fuck was this chick? RIVER MAY

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River struggled to shake off his father’s hopeful voice when he told him about having a girlfriend for him — a good girl, from a good family. That’s what he used to describe her. Fit to be a wife, and with potential to be a good mother if things got serious and they got married. River was silent during that phone call, unsure what he could possibly say that wouldn’t instantly make his father suspicious because who could possibly refuse to have a girlfriend with so much potential, huh? She sounded absolutely perfect and when his father forwarded a picture of her, he realized that she looked perfect, too. Blue eyes, blonde hair, a good physique. It should’ve stirred something in him but as he looked at the photo, he just couldn’t help but notice just how she didn’t look anything like Tobi.
When Tobi abruptly left, he found himself back to square one where he was just helplessly missing his friend and when he met that girl — Harper, was her name, he was too distracted to fully dive into a conversation with her. Not to mention too awkward to carry it by his own, so it was just one uncomfortable silence after the other, but for some reason, that didn’t push her away and they continued talking, talking, and talking.
They spent a lot of time together and eventually, he did invite her into his apartment. They watched a TV show together and she was the first one to make a move. She placed his arm around her shoulders and soon, she was resting her head on his shoulder. He smiled a little, but as he looked at the screen, he just couldn’t help but want his space back. It was doing nothing for him and he knew that he was being too selfish, making her think that there could possibly be something between them, but no matter how hard he tried, he just couldn’t find the strength — or the desire — to have that conversation with her.
Little did he know that he’d already had that conversation with her but she had compelled that memory away because it ended with her biting him out of anger and she didn’t want to have to deal with that messy aftermath.
He looked away from the screen when he heard the door open and his eyes widened slightly at the sight of Tobi. ”Tobi.” He whispered, the sight of him making his heart ache in ways he couldn’t explain. ”I’m Harper. River’s —” River interrupted her in that moment because he had a feeling he knew exactly what she was going to say next. ”Friend. She’s my, uh, friend.” He revealed with a nod of his head followed by a clear of his throat. ”You’re back. How, uh, how was it?” He let his arm drop from around Harper, ignoring the weird look that she gave him.

Once they arrived in Aruba Tobi received a short lecture from Hector about general house rules in their apartment. Tobi wasn’t allowed to bring anyone home at night, which was fine. He wasn’t there to find a vacation romance, not when the memories of River’s lips on his own were still so prominent in his mind. He just wanted to have some fun with his friends in the sun, pretending those feelings for River weren’t there. It had been on the tip of his tongue to speak to his sisters about River— not his brother of course. Samuel would roll his eyes, telling Tobi to stop being so dramatic. He made a shitty big brother almost all of the time. Rarely looked out for Tobi and spent most of his time looking down at Tobi. Their lifestyles just never aligned, which bothered Samuel. Perhaps he was hoping he’d have some baby brother he could relate to. One he could speak to about sports and girls. Seeing River with his hand around Harper was like a punch to the gut, and Tobi had to work hard to keep his expression neutral. He couldn’t help but notice how River pulled away from her the moment he walked in, and that gave him some kind of sick satisfaction, even though he knew he shouldn’t be feeling that way. It didn’t matter what they’d been before or how many times Tobi had replayed their last conversation in his head. He forced a smile, trying to make it reach his eyes as he looked between River and Harper. “I’m back.” He said, ignoring how his voice almost cracked. He knew he had no right to feel jealous, no right to expect anything from River anymore, but that didn’t stop the ache in his chest. “Yeah it was so good! The beaches over there are amazing and the weather was so dope.” His attention bounced over to Harper, “Hey. I’m Tobi.” He stepped forward towards them, arm extended to her for a hand shake. “Uh… hey.” She reached up, locking hands with Tobi. Immediately a cold shiver ran down his back. He stopped himself from ripping his hand away from her. What the fuck? “What have you guys been up to then?” Tobi asked as he lowered himself down into the free armchair. RIVER MAY
