There was a sigh of relief when they finally arrived in Aruba. Everyone was still alive and their journey had been mostly uneventful bar Hector received a fine for speeding. Apparently he was going a certain number of knots above the speeding limit. He humoured the officer though, nodding along and accepting his ticket. He didn’t want to start the holiday off on the wrong foot by killing someone as soon as they left Miami. Once the officer left though Hector tore the ticket up. The water was his home. He’d drive his boat as fast as he wanted, although Magnus suggested they stick to the speed limit as they didn’t want to draw attention to themselves. When they arrived in Aruba there was a short argument with the locals about parking the boat but that was soon resolved when Hector handed them a stack of hundred dollar notes. And people had the nerve to say money didn’t solve everything. It was time to slip into holiday mode. Endlessly frozen cocktails and relaxing. Hector warned Remzi if he so much as breathed too loudly he’d drive a rusty knife somewhere undesirable. The same warning was echoed to Lawrence. If Remzi stepped out of line then Lawrence would suffer too. Hector was under the impression Lawrence’s sister was joining them, until he turned up with the halfwit vampire. The only reason he agreed to letting Remzi on the boat was to give Ayla a break from the idiot. He could promise to deliver her fiancé back in one piece though. Maybe several pieces. They’d only been at the beach bar a few hours and Hector’s bar tab was nearing seven hundred dollars. He told the rest of the group to head down to the next bar while he paid for everything. He quickly scanned through the receipt, with a frozen Piña colada in his other hand. “Who the bloody hell ordered six diet cokes?” He muttered to himself before placing the straw into his mouth to finish the rest of his drink. He placed the glass down on the bar and pulled his wallet out. He counted out a thousand dollars in cash, which took him several attempts due to the amount of alcohol he’d consumed since waking up. His eyes lifted from his notes, looking for an employee to hand the cash to but instead he spotted a familiar seat a few seats to the right of him. Immediately he looked confused. “Are you with us? Well, with Lawrence… or Tobi… I don’t know. I can’t keep up with you kids and your complicated love lives.” He placed the straw back into his to take a sip from his drink without realising he’d already finished it. He glanced down into the empty glass with a quiet sigh. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY TRIED TO TALK HERSELF DOWN ON numerous occasions. Ever since Tobi told her about their “staff trip,” she thought about finding a reason to show up. But there was nothing of interest on that island━for work purposes, anyway━and their time zone wasn’t much different. No matter how deep she dug, she couldn’t find an excuse.
But shortly after they left, Penny found herself pacing her apartment in the evening, eyeing her suitcase and work schedule intermittently, knowing she was losing the last threads of her patience.
They all snapped the moment she sat at their table, in their coffee shop, and sipped her drink.
She had to go. She had to tell him.
Penny leapt from her seat and took off, forgetting about her cup as she raced back to her apartment. If she thought about it too long, she’d lose her nerve, and she didn’t want to. To hell with all the men she’d lost before━she could try again. It was a curse on the men she loved, but…
No. No. If she thought about it too long, she’d stop. Everything was shoved haphazardly into her suitcase, and she launched into the sky, her suitcase now looking quite tiny as it dangled from her giant claws.
She landed in Aruba while it was still dark out, her tail splashing into the small river behind the condos while she thudded onto the golf course. She turned her giant, silver head upon hearing a noise━like growling━and spotted the source. A skinny dog attacking a pair of iguanas, though he’d since stopped to stare at her, one wiggling iguana still hanging from his jowls while the other was pinned under his paw. Penny gave a low growl of her own, and it rumbled through the golf course, the palm trees nearby. The dog whimpered and dropped the iguana, then skittered away.
Penny slowly shifted back and moved to retrieve her suitcase, then tried to drag it through the grass as she headed towards the resort. The pair of iguanas━who’d stayed frozen━stared at her like they’d just seen the hero from their reptile bedtime stories and kept staring until well after she’d splashed through the river.
She didn’t know where they were staying exactly, but she could hang around for a few hours until Tobi answered her text messages. Weaving her way between buildings, Penny stopped at the side of one to dig into her suitcase and find a dress to throw on━in case any of the old people wanted to get up to watch the sunset and instead saw her bare ass.
By the time she’d zipped up her bag and gotten to the front side of the building, she heard a noise like quiet laughter and moaning, and intended on minding her business until she recognized the man’s voice. Low and smooth, whispering the same things he’d once said to her.
Penny’s head snapped in their direction, her eyes adjusting to the dark shadows. She watched as Lawrence pressed some girl into the stucco wall, her cheeks growing hot as she did. Was this what he felt when he heard Tobi calling out for her? Maybe she deserved it, then.
God, how fucking stupid was she? Five hundred years and she hadn’t learned a thing.
Penny managed to find her own accommodation. She planned to leave Aruba as soon as possible, but she’d spend the rest of her weekend here, at least. It was nice.
She kept her distance from Lawrence, spending time with Tobi (and occasionally the witch) whenever he wasn’t doing a “group activity.” She sat at the same bar━only separated by half the beach━and didn’t move to join when they seemed to pack up to head to the next one. Penny watched idly as Hector sauntered over to the bar, looking more relaxed than she’d ever seen him. She sipped from her piña colada, though it was far too sweet for her.
Penny watched as he pulled out a thousand bucks like it was nothing, her brows lifted. She glanced around, but nobody seemed to be watching him. No one except her━and then he was watching her. She hoped, for a second, that he wouldn’t notice her, but then it was too late.
She barked out a laugh, “Kid? I haven’t been called a kid in…” Penny paused for a second, then shrugged like she couldn’t bother to recall just how long it’d been. “Aren’t we about the same age?” It was easier to talk about this than acknowledge his stinging comment━how he had no idea who she was with. If Hector didn’t know, then she had no hope of coming clean to anyone. But she thought about it for a second longer, and grumbled under her breath, “Hard to keep up with any love life at all, huh?”
Penny slid her nearly-full drink across the bar to him, “Here. I don’t want it.” And then maybe he wouldn’t have to mention that he saw her here.

Once they hit the shore in Aruba Hector took a few seconds to himself. His feet driven down into the sand as he slowly inhaled the fresh sea air. As the salt hit his lungs, memories of his life on the waters flooded his mind. The sea was still his second home, York his first home and now Mystic Falls his third. The tiny town had knocked New York from that place. But then after a few hours he remembered how bloody annoying sand was. It settled everywhere. Even as he emptied his pocket out to retrieve his wallets little specks tumbled from his hand and onto the bar as he fumbled through the notes. Alongside the bar tab he was also pulling out various notes to give as a tip to the bartender, even though she’d forgotten to bring Linc his drink and accidentally gave Lawrence a vodka and coke rather than vodka and rum. It wasn’t like Hector was going to miss another few hundred dollars. Centuries back he would have been clinging onto his money fiercely. There was a common misconception that wealth had followed him throughout life as almost everyone he knew had only known him as a man with money, but he left York with hardly anything to his name. It was a struggle to even pay for his daylight. As he spotted Penny at the bar he tried to recall seeing her on a boat coming over to Aruba. Of course she didn’t need to sail with them, not when she had other means of transport, according to Kit. Hector half shrugged at Penny’s question, “I don’t know. I know you’re old… ish. I’m seven hundred and sixty…” He paused, trying to remember his previous birthday. “Five.” He eventually added, not even considering there were humans surrounding them who could be listening to the conversation. Hector constantly kept his eye glued to the ground. Whilst he didn’t engage in general gossip– apart from with Magnus and most recently with Kit– he did try and keep up with who was dating who. It was common knowledge Lawrence and Penny had a thing going on, but then suddenly that thing stopped and now Tobi was having a thing with Penny. This was all things he’d managed to pick up from snippets of conversations between people. Perks of having sensitive hearing. “No judgement here.” He held his hands up for a second. He took the drink, giving Penny a quick nod. “Not gonna say no to a free drink. Thanks.” His eyes bounced around the bar, trying to spot the bartender. His attention drifted back to her as he remembered she never actually answered his question. “So, are you here with Tobi or Lawrence?” He sipped the free drink, downing almost half of it, “Stick with Lawrence. He’s immortal and won’t die on you… humans die too bloody easily.” He paused for a moment, realising what he’d just said to Penny. The alcohol had loosened his tongue, “Sorry. Ignore me. I’m rather intoxicated.” And now wasn’t the time to bring up Evelyn, dragging up old memories of her. That type of conversation was save for a Wednesday evening when he and Kit were sharing a bottle of wine in his office discussing their problems. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY NODDED SLOWLY, SURVEYING THE VAMPIRE, who was clearly a lot older than her━and a lot drunker. “I’m almost two hundred and fifty years younger than you, then,” She said, then added, “Five-twenty-six,” because she doubted he could do quick math in his current state.
When she dodged his question, he clarified that he wasn’t judging her, but Penny was already judging herself for all of this. It didn’t matter what Hector meant by it, because it’d already struck home. Unfortunately, he wasn’t liquored up enough to actually let it go.
The moment he mentioned dying too easily, Penny turned her head away sharply, tears beginning to swim in her vision. Vampire or not, none of her lovers were very resilient, and she didn’t expect a time to come where one would be.
Penny grumbled, “They all die too easily. Lawrence would find a way, I’m sure.” She sucked in a breath, composing herself before turning back to him. “All you vampires had to find a way to die in the first place━but he doesn’t have the excuse of being alive during the Middle Ages.” When it was a lot harder to survive. Penny was born at the tail end of it, and though she’d grown up during the Renaissance period, she knew how hard it was to stay alive then compared to a hundred years ago━when Lawrence had died.

Thankfully she gave him her birth year otherwise they could have been there for another five minutes while Hector tried to figure it out. His brain wasn’t exactly computing properly. He couldn’t even figure out what twenty percent of their bill was, to leave a tip. Instead he just lay down more and more money until it seemed like it was enough. “You’ve been around long enough then.” She was a complete child then, not like Remzi. Hector watched Penny intently, his eyes narrowing ever so slightly as she spoke. Her words hung in the air like a heavy mist, thick with the weight of loss and frustration. He could feel it — the pain, the bitterness. It resonated with something deep within him. His eyes softened as he caught the flicker of emotion in her— the way she turned her head, trying to hide the tears. The inevitability of death was a cruel lesson that never got easier to learn. He leaned back, exhaling slowly, as if the weight of the centuries pressed down on his chest. “Potentially. Lawrence is a bit of an idiot sometimes.” He responded with a flicker of a smile on his face. “If I was to fall in love again I would choose someone immortal. It’s hard working trying to protect a human… they can die from being hit by a car or being hanged.” Hector paused, his gaze distant for a moment, as if he was looking into the past. “Losing someone you love is enough to put you off finding it ever again.” He said as his gaze returned to her, “I’m far too drunk to be having this conversation.” This was the first time he’d actually met Penny and here he was sharing his life story with her. ━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ HECTOR WAS RIGHT. LAWRENCE WAS AN idiot, and she had no doubt he’d find a way to get himself killed the moment she gave in and decided they could be together. Immortal or not, it didn’t seem to matter in her case. Even phoenixes, who could literally rise from the dead, weren’t safe with her.
“True enough, but even immortals have their weaknesses.” She sighed heavily. It sounded like Hector had been through the same thing she had, and, again, focusing on him was easier than coming clean about why she was here.
He claimed he was ‘too drunk’ for this, but she ignored that comment━it was exactly why this would work for her. And, well, he was old… maybe she was hoping he’d have some advice. If you could even advise against curses. Penny nodded solemnly anyway, empathetic against never wanting to find it again. “Have you had a few, then? You’re old.” It was supposed to be playful, but even her small grin couldn’t save their sad conversation. “A car, hanging?” She listed the deaths back to him, and while they were significantly different, she was willing to bet that they weren’t random for him. How many had died on him before he gave up?

Hector nodded in quiet agreement, acknowledging her comment without adding much to it. Yes, they had their weaknesses—he was living proof of that. There was something out there, warping the minds of vampires, slowly unraveling them from within. “Many,” he murmured softly, his voice laced with a subtle gravity. His gaze shifted towards her, eyes slightly glazed from the alcohol but still sharp enough to notice the weight she carried beneath her words. She was hiding something—a wound, perhaps, one she wasn’t ready to expose. He caught the small, sad grin she forced onto her face. He was old, maybe too old sometimes. Hector had lived the span of a human life seven times over, and soon it would be eight. People weren’t designed to live that long. Humans, with their fleeting years, managed to cram in multiple failed relationships, their lists of loved and lost much longer than Hector’s own. “A few what? Girlfriends? Plenty. Women I’ve loved? Just the one.” He paused, the echo of the words sounding sadder than he’d expected. “I’ve only ever truly loved one woman, and she died... sentenced to death for a crime she didn’t commit. Hanging.” A few minutes. That’s all he needed and he could have saved her. “But it sounds like you’ve lost an immortal?”He’d laid his heartbreak bare. The floor was hers now, should she choose to share her own. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY DIDN’T THINK SHE’D BECOME ANGRY at Hector. It was the emotion she’d grown closest to in all her years of life, but she was almost… tired now. Weary. She didn’t have the energy left to be angry.
However, when Hector revealed that he’d given up after one dead lover… the burning heat came fast. Like a pot going from simmering to boiling over before you could catch it, anger flared, her hands turning burning hot on the wooden bar. “Are you joking?” Penny hissed. She seared handprints into the counter, her eyes flashing silver and reptilian for a few moments. She was old, she could control herself━or so she thought. This came out of nowhere, though, too fast for Penny to stop it, and then she extinguished it like a bucket of water on a fire.
“You lost one woman and gave up? That’s all?” Penny laughed sharply and humourlessly, turning to fully face Hector. “I’ve had six lovers. Four of them died while I was with them.” She snapped. “The other two are either dead now or want nothing to do with me. A phoenix and a dragon were among the four, but there was only one human. I kept going, but I’ve lost six of them, and now I’ve decided that’s enough. Come back to me when you experience something real and tell me I should put all my eggs in another basket.” Penny gritted her teeth, close to screaming at Hector━if only there weren’t plenty of humans in ear shot. She’d left a child behind with one of them, had lost her parents and sister in her lifetime, and yet Hector had the nerve to whine to her about his one woman.

Maybe if Hector’s bloodstream wasn’t ninety percent alcohol, he would have noticed the shift in Penny’s mood sooner. The tightness in her voice, the simmering anger beneath her words. But it wasn’t until he saw the flash of fury that darkened her features—her eyes glowing silver—that he realised he’d misstepped. Dragons were always quick to anger, but what had he said that was so wrong? He’d been polite, hadn’t he? His brain sluggishly processed the words she hurled at him, her fury palpable. "So... you're telling me I need to go and have my heart broken another five times before I can voice my opinion on this matter?" His grief, though real to him, suddenly felt small, insignificant in the shadow of hers. But it was real to him. He’d loved once, deeply, and that love had shaped him—broken him in a way that left him unsure if he had anything left to give. "Why would I do that? Why would I put myself through it again?" His voice, though quieter, held a bitter edge. “You said it yourself, they all die too easily.”He could have snapped back at her, turned her words into a weapon, but there was a rawness in Penny’s voice that silenced his anger. She’d lost six lovers. It was bound to leave behind a scar that even time couldn’t fix. “Yes, I gave up quickly,” he admitted, his words heavy with the weight of his own defeat. “But I gave up because it hurt too much. That one time? That was enough to break me.” He was going to need countless bottles of tequila after this conversation was over to wash away his emotions. PENNY BARTLETT - wrap with yours?
