Going after an enemy's family members wasn’t uncommon in Manny’s world. He’d done it himself, many times. But no one had ever gone after Ricky. Some believed Manny hated his brother so much that killing Ricky wouldn’t make a difference. Others weren’t keen to get their hands messy with killing a member of law enforcement. Either way Ricky had been fairly safe until now. Until someone was stupid enough to kidnap Ricky and send a message to Manny to meet him in a warehouse outside Mystic Falls. Turns out Maany had unexpectedly encroached on someone's selling patch down in Texas. The guy was a novice who was running with a small gang. A gang Manny had never heard, which meant they weren’t worth dealing with. It was a simple request. Stop selling there and he’d let Ricky go, unharmed. Refused and Ricky would be shot dead. He had until 7pm to respond. Manny didn't react well to this message. Obviously no one had informed this idiot that Manolo doesn’t take kindly to threats. No one would bend his hand, especially not using his older brother as a bargain chip. Manny's first instinct was to delete the message and carry on with his day. He didn’t give a fuck if Ricky lived or died, but he didn’t wipe the message of his phone. Instead he ignored it, but then he couldn’t stop glancing at the clock every hour. Time was slipping away. Ricky would be dead in the next three hours if Manny didn’t do anything. Did his hatred run so deeply for his brother that he was happy to let him die? Apparently not because shortly after 4pm he picked up the phone and started calling around to find out more about the man who was holding Ricky captive and about the gang. Within thirty minutes he had a few names accompanied with pictures. He didn’t tell anyone why he needed the information. He’d be shot dead if people found out he was on his way to help a detective. He’d taken the identity of a man called Carlos who was probably dead by now given Manny had just ordered a hit on him. He pulled up outside the warehouse, slowly climbing out the car as he scanned his surroundings. He approached the warehouse, pushing the side door open and was immediately greeted by Ricky and the man in the middle room. The man frowned. “Carlos. The fuck you doing here?” Manny carried on walking forward, toward the man, trying not to look at Ricky, “I tried calling you but I couldn’t get through. Manolo’s been spotted over in California an hour ago. He ain’t coming to save his brother so finish the job so we can go.” The man shrugged, turning his back to Manny so he was facing Ricky. Just as he raised his gun to take aim at Ricky Manny pulled his gun from the waistband of his jeans. He pressed the gun against the man’s head and pulled the trigger. As the man collapsed into a heap on the floor Manny's face distorted back into his own. ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA

━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ MANNY WAS GOING TO COME GET HIM. RICKY kept telling himself that as he sat uncomfortably in the warehouse, tied to a fucking chair like this was a damn heist movie━not that Ricky had seen many of those.
He was ambushed on his way home. They were idiots, of course, to go after a cop of all people, but him? Out of everyone in Manny’s life? And how had they even found out about him? Ricky did his best to keep their relationship under wraps━they both did.
His eyes slipped to each of the men that watched him. Some came and went, but one always remained. It was impossible to escape━there was usually more than one at all times. Ricky could use his strength, but how many bullets could he withstand before he actually died? Well, if Manny didn’t come, then he’d get himself out of here. Or he’d at least try to.
But Manny would come. His little brother wasn’t so far gone. If he was, Ricky wouldn’t keep fighting for him━keep helping him to continuously give him chances to get better. His entire career had been built around the idea that there was still something in Manny worth saving, and if he gave up on him now, then it would all mean nothing. If he believed, then he had to keep believing, even when his life was on the line.
Olive. Shit. His cat was at home, likely waiting for her dinner. If he didn’t get out of here alive, would McGrath take her in? Would they realize she was in his apartment before it was too late? Ricky began to fret, and as the hours drew on, the small part of him that worried whether or not Manny would come became louder.
Just as Ricky was about to fight for his own escape, the warehouse door opened, and he let out a soft puff of breath. Alright, now there were two of them. He could figure this out. The newest man, though…
Maybe it was wishful thinking. But his senses prickled at the man’s presence, almost as if realizing that he was something else. Someone else.
California? Ricky sagged in his chair somewhat, squeezing his eyes closed for a moment. Manny wasn’t coming. It didn’t mean he couldn’t send someone, but who would he trust? And what would he say to explain why he needed to save “some detective”?
His only hope was the odd feeling in his gut, the senses that’d carried him through his job. They weren’t expecting this man to be here. He came to deliver the news, but…
Ricky braced himself when the gun was pointed at him. He was ready to topple himself over at the last second and avoid the bullet, knowing his reflexes were faster than this man’s, but the gun pointed at him wasn’t the one that went off.
The man who’d been watching him dropped to the ground. Ricky’s face bunched in surprise and confusion before jumping to the man who’d shot him. The man whose face was now changing… into Manny’s.
Ricky couldn’t help the grin that began to grow on his features. It wasn’t wide or beaming by any means, but it was full of relief. “You came.” He said on a heavy breath, then broke the zip ties holding his wrists and ankles in place. Ricky stood quickly, though he felt unsteady, and rushed to his baby brother, gathering Manny into his arms. “I knew you would, mijo.”

Manny wasn’t just angry these novice assholes had come for him, he was angry he ended up giving into the pressure and saving his brother. He chose to not think of it too much, stashing the reasoning away in the back of his mind. The whole journey there he told himself the reason he was heading to the warehouse was to show these men he wasn’t to be messed with. It had nothing to do with Ricky. He didn’t care if Ricky lived or died, right? But he allowed himself a few minutes to imagine losing his brother. The man who’d given up his childhood to raise Manny. There was something inside his heart that twisted at the thought of Ricky dying, which surprised him as he thought the organ had decayed over the years. It took a certain kind of man to deliver the type of violence he did and not feel any remorse, but things were different with Ricky. The man could have fired a bullet at Ricky’s skull, but he would have been unsuccessful in killing him, but Manny wasn’t going to let it get that far. These men could easily choose to torture Ricky instead or throw him to the bottom of the ocean. It was those dark thoughts that drove Manny to take action. They weren’t going to let his brother walk away unscathed. Despite the surge of relief that Ricky was okay it didn’t reflect on Manny’s face, which remained emotionless. But then Ricky rushed forward, daring to throw his arms around Manny who immediately went stiff and didn't return the hug. An uncomfortable feeling started brewing in his chest. When was the last time he was hugged? For years he purposely deprived himself of any type of emotional human connection with anyone. There was a twitch in his hand as his mind was screaming at him to embrace Enrique. It had been too damn long since the two had shown an ounce of affection to one another. But Manny pushed those thoughts to the back of his mind, shutting them down. “Figured I owed you one after the whole thing with Hannya.” Yes. That’s exactly what it was. Manny returning a favour. “Are you gonna call this? Get me arrested for murder ?” He pulled his phone from his back pocket, offering it to Ricky. ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA

━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ MANNY DIDN’T HUG HIM BACK. HE DIDN’T TOSS his arms around Ricky like he’d done for years. As soon as he’d learned the significance of a hug, Manny had done it all the time. When Ricky picked him up from school, when he stood up for Manny, when he helped a complicated homework question make sense. As he got older, they grew fewer, and then completely stopped once their father got ahold of him. It’d been years since their last embrace, but Ricky still felt like he was holding that little boy in his arms, the one who was innocent of all the crimes his adult self had committed.
Ricky sensed Manny’s hand twitching rather than feeling it, just a general shift in the air, in the muscles Ricky was still attached to. Maybe he wanted to hug back, but the life he lived tore him apart, ripped the humanity from him, and it didn’t allow for something like that. That was alright, though, because Ricky would always love him, and he would always offer comfort, no matter what.
However, when Manny stated it was payback for what happened with Hannya, Ricky had to sigh. He rubbed Manny’s back softly, in comforting strokes up and down his spine, then finally pulled back. “Alright,” Ricky said quietly, as if accepting his brother’s response while simultaneously sure it wasn’t true━and wanting Manny to know it. He wasn’t going to fool Ricky. He’d saved him because they were still brothers.
Ricky’s brows drew together when Manny pulled out his phone, and he shook his head, frowning deeply. “Manny…” After everything, Manny still felt like he needed to get a jab in. “You saved the life of someone in law enforcement… aren’t you more worried about me telling someone you know?” Ricky teased lightly, the edges of his lips quirking upwards in a small smile.
“I didn’t doubt you for a second,” Ricky said after a few moments, his voice still gentle, like guiding an abused dog to a palmful of treats. He reached out to squeeze Manolo’s arm softly, endearingly. “I knew my brother was still in there. I wish you wouldn’t forget that.”

No matter how hard he tried Ricky was never going to squeeze any truth out of Manny about how a part of him missed his family. The years had shaped him into something cold and unrecognisable but he hadn’t completely faded away. That was evident by the fact he’d travelled here to save his brother. But had his actions helped to feed into Ricky’s idea that Manny was worth saving? Even if he wanted to throw his arms around his brother and return the hug he couldn’t. They’d both firmly chosen their paths in life– very different paths leading in different directions. This life he’d created for himself wasn’t something you simply walk away from. He knew that from the moment he stepped into it. The only way out was in a coffin. Was he expecting Ricky to reach for the phone and call the station? In that moment they were both stepping outside their strict comfort zones. Manny had saved Ricky and Ricky wasn’t going to report the murder. “You won’t tell anyone.” There was certainty laced into his words because if he did Manny would end up with a bullet lodged into his skull. Manny eyes following Ricky’s hand as he reached out to squeeze his arm gently. He took a few steps backwards. They were quite far away from Mystic Falls and Manny half considered leaving his brother behind, forcing him to make his own way back into town but it was risky (and cruel). He turned away from Ricky, making his way back to the car. “I’ll drop you off on the outskirts of Mystic Falls. We ride in silence otherwise I will kick you from the car.” The only reason he was offering the ride was covering his own back, “Also, find another face to wear. We can’t be seen leaving him.” He called out as he shifted back into the man’s skin he was wearing when he first arrived. ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA - the end!
