So much for not doing this at the hotel. Cam lifted his gaze as he got out of his car out front of the hotel. Lit windows scattered the structure, dozens of potential witnesses to the absolute destruction of his relationship sitting in their palatial rooms. If he was lucky then Grey Maddox wouldn’t have skimped on the sound proofing. Maybe he would be the only one who heard Catia’s heart break when he said the words aloud. I slept with your sister.
They were lodged in his throat like thorns. Prickling and drawing blood every time he swallowed. He was sure he’d been able to taste it when he’d finally called Catia last night and asked if they could talk. Maybe she had too, some inner voice warning her that something was wrong. She’d always been quick to pick up on his moods before, perhaps it was one of her abilities, like being able to see what was coming. Had she seen this? Him walking towards the front doors of the hotel like a man heading to the gallows? Was her stomach tying itself in knots right now the same way his was? That would’ve been an added cruelty on top of the one he’d already perpetrated. Like Cassandra Catia was already damned with her knowledge of the future.
After work, Cam had retreated home. Refusing to linger for a heartbeat longer in the garage than he had to. Shut off the engine, walk straight into the house. Don’t look at the spot where he’d sunk down onto the concrete with Lucky, don’t let the images of what had happened that night filter into his brain yet. If he thought too much about it all he might just call and cancel instead of scrubbing himself down in the shower (no amount of hot water was going to wash away this sin) and heading back out. Hair still damp, the heat settling into his chest like he’d scalded his heart, he’d climbed back into the car. There was a good chance this was the last time he’d see Catia, some part of him wanted to remember every second of it, in case, the bigger part knew that he would never want to see that hurt cross her face again.
If she’d known that he was finally biting the bullet, Lucky probably would have been waiting on the door step, slow clapping him every step of the way for finally developing the balls to destroy his life. At least Lottie had been concerned for her sister. After this Cat would have her at least, the one person in her life right now who hadn’t hurt her – although Lottie had kept the secret for the two of them. It would be the lesser of all three evils, his own being the worst.
Cam glanced at the front desk as he started towards the elevators. Not Catia, not Maddox. If Grey knew what was going down he’d probably be standing there like a bull dog, full of warnings about what would happen to him if he hurt Catia, as though there was an if about it at this point. The woman standing there offered him a polite smile, but he just nodded and walked stiffly past. Once he opened his mouth it was going to be a torrent, no holding the story back until it had all swept out and he could finally see the destruction left behind.
Shoulders hunched, he got into the elevator, riding up to Catia’s floor – one below Maddox’s. Although Catia was expecting him, his stomach knotted. What if she wasn’t there waiting on the other side of the suite door. What if he had a reprieve? The second the doors pinged open he knew he would never be that fucking lucky. The universe had planted her in his path, standing in the hallway outside Catia’s suite like a guard dog. She could try biting this time but he wasn’t going to let her savage him. ”What the fuck are you doing here?” Cam asked hoarsely, trying to keep his voice from carrying through the door. ”Did she call you?” His throat tightened, his gaze ticking to the door. Did Catia already know? Was this some elaborate ruse just to get him to hang himself with his admission? It was a possibility he hadn’t wanted to consider.
