Leah was struggling to admit it to herself, but what Remzi had said to her cut deep. Too fucking deep. He realised instantly he’d gone a little too far, perhaps even crossed the line which was wild because since when did they have lines? It had been a fucking free for all until now. Until feelings became involved. They clouded everything between the pair. Now all the fun had been sucked out of things with Remzi. She longed for things to go back to how they were before Ayla arrived. Even before Raik died. She missed how they’d bump into each other in the club. How she would drift into his arms, dance with him until one of them suggested ditching the club and going home together. Shit was simple back then. Leah hesitated before grabbing her heels off her bedroom floor. What if Remzi was at the club tonight? She made sure she’d worn an extra tight fitting dress, just in case that piece of shit was in there. She peered at herself in the mirror one last time, making sure her makeup was perfect. There was no fucking way Ayla could look as hot as Leah. She’d spotted her in the club once or twice wearing the most plain boring outfits ever. Dresses that literally went below her knees. Yet, Leah was the one jealous of Ayla. It was an unofficial night off for Leah. Well, only for a few hours. She trusted Damien would be out there keeping everything in check. Making sure Elias’ hadn’t noticed one of his reapers was ignoring the bell of death. Leah had been doing the job for so long now that it was easy to ignore that invisible pull towards a soul crying out in need. It was like a switchboard though. It was whoever answered first. She’d managed to grab the attention of a man before she’d even entered the club. One those rich assholes who loved flashing his cash. He pressed his credit card into Leah’s palm as he edged forward to give her a kiss. He’d asked her to order him a drink, but Leah had other ideas. First she’d order herself a few drinks at the bar before disappearing out of there and straight into a shopping mall. Who needed real therapy when you had retail therapy. She stood at the bar, her eyes scanning the expensive bottles of liquor on the top shelf. Suddenly out of nowhere a girl barged her way to the front of the bar, pushing Leah and another woman aside, wedging herself in the middle of the two. “Are you fucking serious?” She snapped at the girl, who glared back at Leah. “Shut up, bitch.” Leah let out a hollow laugh at the comment. Brave. Really fucking brave. “I will smash your head so hard off this bar you’ll be seeing stars for a week.” If Leah really wanted to she could smash the girl’s head into pieces and end her there and then, but what if it grabbed Elias’ attention somehow? ━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ RUBY DIDN’T LIKE CLUBS. SHE DIDN’T LIKE loud music, or dancing, or people. It reminded her too fucking much of trying to attract clients as she got older. She had to put on too-tight clothing and learn to balance in heels, and felt like she was playing dress-up as she did her makeup. Not that she’d ever “played dress-up” as a child. But it made her feel awkward and uncomfortable, like a child━which, she supposed, she had been.
Later, Ruby was asked to teach the younger girls how to do their own makeup. She was never any good at it. She never liked helping━that wasn’t where her skill set was.
But Manny needed her here to ensure his men on the ground were doing their jobs, and to sniff out if any other shit was going sideways. Make sure the product was moving, that he was getting his correct cut━all that. It was the only reason she could stand the booming in her chest and the ringing in her ears.
Ruby waited in the crowd at the bar’s counter until one of the bartenders came over, though it seemed they were gonna take forever. Before she could get her order in, some puta elbowed her way in, causing Ruby to curse at her in Spanish automatically. The woman on the other side went for English━which, of course, got a response.
The moment she called the woman a bitch for having the nerve to say something, though, Ruby reached up and grabbed the back of her head. She smashed it on the bar, then only let go after she’d dragged the girl’s head back up and shoved her away.
Her dark eyes passed over the blonde, a smirk twisting at her lips. She nodded, “Did it for ya.” And then asked, “What’re you drinkin’?” The moment the next bartender passed, Ruby leaned over the counter and waved, then demanded their orders from him. She wasn’t waiting another damn second.

From the second she entered the club there had been a sickening feeling pooling in the pit of her stomach. Yes, she wanted Remzi to see her tonight, see what he had lost but at the same time she didn't want to see him. What if he was with Ayla? Pressing his body into Ayla the same way he did with her. That was ridiculous though. Ayla probably didn’t even know how to dance— just how she didn’t know how to find herself a husband. She probably stood on the sidelines, stepping side to side, clumsily nodding along to the music with zero rhythm. It was a good job she’d secured the man’s credit card as a fresh set of nails would probably be needed tomorrow after she dragged hers down this bitches face. There was a chance she could have shook off the interaction if the girl said she was sorry, but instead she called Leah a bitch. Just as she was considering breaking the girl’s nose using the counter top, another hand reached around and did the job for her. A flash of surprise washed over her face, but it quickly faded and a smirk grew on her face as she watched the bitch stagger away from them. “Cheers.” Her attention jumped back to the girl next to her. “Vodka soda with a splash of lime please.” Her eyes darted over to the bartender, as he took their orders, “Hey! Only a splash of lime not a fucking gallons worth.” She glanced back at the woman, “They employ certified idiots here. Anyway, I’m Leah.” She flashed the stranger another smile, but this time it wasn’t as sharp with a little warmth behind it. RUBY HERRERA
