The pressure was building in his chest minute by minute. He was elated that he’d been returned to his body and Cassie had found a way to heal him, but there was still a heavy sense of sadness hanging over him. Linc had forgiven him for what happened, but Hector hadn’t had the chance to apologise to Magnus. It was humbling to know there was something out there that could alter his memory so drastic that he was capable of killing his best friend. Someone he made a promise to shortly after 1354 that they’d be friends forever. There would be oceans between them but they’d still reconnect, whether it was months later or years later. Hector never missed out on a moment of Magnus’ life. He had the letters to prove it. He had stacks of them stored at his apartment. If they were placed side by side they’d give a perfect timeline of Magnus’ life. It wasn't just about Magnus’ forgiveness though, it was about the disappointment he felt in himself. Everyone was giving him the benefit of the doubt, but Hector was struggling to give it to himself. There was some version of him that recognised something was wrong because he warned off Magnus and Casssie when they tried to approach him. At one point he even sent a message to Ayla telling her to stay away from him. As soon as Cassie handed him in the blood bag he drained it immediately. His body no longer craved chocolate or pancakes. Within a few seconds of sitting down he became aware of how in tune his senses were. The sound of Cassie’s heart thumping in her chest as she went to pull Linc out echoed in his ears. Would he miss being human? Probably not. Linc on the other hand could do. Inside the stone Hector tried to explain to Linc that he needed to embrace what he was, lean into the positives of being a vampire instead of grasping onto the negatives. It was the only way Hector made it through the first century. There was a twitch of a smile on his face as Cassie and Linc embraced each other. Maybe tonight would be the night they finally sealed the deal. Hats off to Linc for holding back for so long. Meanwhile Hector was so keen to jump in bed with a woman he didn’t care she was taken. Eventually Cassie and Linc left the room, leaving Hector and Magnus alone together. The pressure in his chest finally gave way as he could feel a surge of emotions explode inside of him. “Magnus.” His voice cracked and started to falter. He hauled himself up from the chair, with the small ounce of energy the blood bag had given to him. “I cannot even begin to explain how sorry I am for everything, but also how thankful I am that you never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself.” He felt the hot tears prickly in his eyes. A few trickled down his face, but he didn’t reach to wipe them away. It hadn’t been the first time Magnus had saved him. Magnus managed to drag Hector off the path of destruction after Evelyn died, but that's what they did. They’d always been there for one another. “You know…” He took a moment, taking in a deep breath to try and control his emotions, which seem pointless as he couldn’t stop the tears from flowing, “I realised whilst I was locked in that stone that if I came out of this and realised I’d killed you I wouldn’t have been able to go on. I’d have taken off my daylight ring and stepped out into the sun because what’s the point of living an eternity if your best friend is gone?” It may have seemed a little drastic to some, but it was difficult to explain. How could Hector carry on living if he was responsible for killing the one person he cared about the most? MAGNUS DAYNE

━ evil notions come free ━ HE’D SAVED THEM. HE HADN’T DONE IT ALONE, of course, but Magnus had saved them. He felt some of the weight drift from his body as they both returned, then more as they lasted a few minutes, and perhaps the rest of it was gone by the time Cassie and Linc drifted from the room with their hands clasped together. He didn’t have any urge to warn them to keep the door open or even think anything negative about their relationship━he was only happy that they could have each other again. That his son was back, and free to feel the happiness Cassie brought him.
Magnus smiled to himself as he began to tidy up the area, putting away the supplies they’d used to administer the cure. He stayed quiet, allowing Hector to get his bearings before his best friend broke the silence himself.
His head snapped towards Hector, feeling the energy in the room shift as the other man pushed himself up. “Easy,” He said softly, on instinct, though they were vampires and it didn’t particularly matter, he supposed.
“Of course,” Magnus smiled, though there was a hint of sadness in it. He turned towards Hector, clasping the other vampire’s arms in his hands. “You would’ve done the same for me. I’d never let ya go, ‘Ector. At least not without a fight.” His smile grew a little wider. It was easier to joke now that everything was okay again.
He squeezed Hector’s arms before allowing his hands to drop, listening intently to what Hector had to say. More gratitude, of course, but Hector should’ve known it wasn’t really necessary. He would’ve done anything for his best friend.
Magnus’ smile was sad again. His own vision grew blurry, though he blinked through it, and━when Hector was finished━he stepped forward to drag him into a hug. “That’s exactly the reason I worked so ‘ard to save ya,” That and a dozen others, but this was the core of it, wasn’t it? “What’s th’point of livin’ if you aren’t around?” He pulled back, then sniffed and sighed, trying to rein his emotions in, that same sad smile returning. “I didn’t know if I’d find a cure. I started losin’ ‘ope. But I couldn’t give up on ya, ‘Ector. Couldn’t give up on either of ya.” Because they were his little family, and Hector was right━without them, life wasn’t worth living.

Neither of them imagined their brief meeting in an abandoned house just on the outskirt of London would lead to centuries of friendship. They would be on the opposite sides of the world but still spare a few minutes to write a letter to each other to talk about their travels. Who they had met (women included of course), what they had discovered, where they were heading next. Letters which continued until they reunited in Mystic Falls. In the later days they were more careful with what they wrote though, choosing to communicate in a language only they understood. Hector didn’t want someone reading over his confession that he had just successfully robbed the Bank of America. “I think I’m going to need more than a small blood bag to sort me out.” A few human sized blood bags would suffice. His lips parted for a moment, his mouth still feeling like sandpaper. Hector took a deep breath, feeling the weight of Magnus' words settle into his chest. He was still adjusting to the fact that he was here, really here, with his best friend beside him and the nightmare finally over. He met Magnus' eyes, seeing the sadness lingering behind them. For a moment, Hector couldn’t find his voice. The emotions swelled in him. It wasn’t just about being saved; it was about knowing that someone had fought so hard, had refused to give up on him, even when hope was a distant memory. “Of course. We’re in this together. Forever. I would’ve fought until there was nothing left of me if it meant saving you.” He would have burnt cities to the ground if it meant finding a way to bring Magnus home. The hug Magnus had pulled him into moments ago had felt like coming home. It was a reassurance, a silent vow that no matter what happened, they would always have each other. And now, as he stood there with his hand on Magnus’ shoulder, Hector felt the last of his fear and uncertainty melt away. “You’ve been my best friend for over six hundred and fifty years… I couldn’t bear going on a single day without you because you make this eternal existence worthwhile.” Even when oceans and lands separate them. “I’m sorry I didn’t recognise I was sick… I know you’re going to say it wasn’t my fault but I’ve been in this body for seven centuries. I know myself. I should’ve noticed something was wrong when I started wearing creased shirts.” There was a quick flicker of a smile on his face. “Now. Tell me the truth. Is my flat a complete wreck? I know I’ve ruined a few carpets and my cleaner is… no longer with us.” There was actually a flicker of regret from him for killing his cleaner. She didn’t deserve to be caught up in everything.
