The mask slipped away instantly from Sonny once he announced himself as a demon. Instantly he turned into some cruel and cold asshole. Not the Sonny she had met by the lake. How could it be the same person who saved her life? There was nothing she could do about it now though. She was in too deep. Neck fucking deep because she didn’t bother asking questions early on. She followed him blindly to Mystic Falls, solely focused on saving her family without any concern of her own well being because what could possibly go wrong when following a strange man halfway across the country? She’d only fed part of the story to her family, telling them she was making her way to Virgina, making a joke she was heading towards another dead end. Selene had stormed out of their hotel room ten minutes prior, almost taking the door of its hinges when she swung it open to leave. There was only so much time she could spend with Sonny before he started getting under her skin, making sly comments about everything. Sometimes it felt like he’d crawled inside her head and found exactly what made her tick, even though they’d only known each other for a few months. Growing up with two brothers had given her a thick skin though. They didn’t think twice before giving Selene their opinion on something, like when she announced who was taking her to the school prom. Anson doubled over laughing, telling Selene he was so out of her league. She’d made it all the way to the coffee shop before she realised she’d left her wallet at the hotel. She didn’t want to go back for it but she was also desperate for a coffee. The hotel coffee tasted like soil. Hopefully Sonny had headed out to do his demon stuff by now, which she didn’t really know what that meant. She assumed he was out there killing people. The less she knew, the better. She was only there for the magic and other things. It was the two things that were keeping her there. She pushed the door open, immediately seeing Sonny sitting at the small desk in their room, sipping on a beer. “Don’t worry. I’m just grabbing my wallet and leaving again to leave you alone.” She snatched her wallet off the bed, glancing over at Sonny who looked kind of… sad? SONNY BECK

━ everybody be cool ━ SONNY HADN’T BEEN FREE IN… FUCK, how many years had passed? Had he not had control of his body since that day in the bank? It felt like it. As though he were a pet, Koschei allowed him to be present when his mom was dying, but, even still, he wasn’t at the wheel. Not like now.
“Now that the bitch is gone━sorry, I meant witch,” His cackle filled their shared brain. Sonny grumbled over the corny joke. ‘You won’t be able to fuck anything up. I’ll be back. Don’t do anything stupid.’ Before Sonny could process anything past the barely-veiled threat, Koschei was gone.
Suddenly, it was like the elephant that’d been sitting on his chest for fifty years just vanished. He collapsed onto the motel room floor, panting hard. After a long moment, he collected himself… enough to curl into a fetal position. He had to call Damien. He had to get ahold of his baby brother and tell him what Koschei was planning. Tell him he loved him. But the weight of all the things his hands had done over the years━all the lives he’d taken━settled in the spot Koschei left gaping open.
If he did any of that shit, it’d be a waste. Koschei would kill someone they loved over it━if there was anybody left━and nothing would stop him from carrying out his plans anyway.
Instead, Sonny peeled himself off the floor and retrieved a beer from the mini fridge. He sat heavily on the desk at one side of the room, green eyes sliding up to where the girl━Selene━had walked out a few minutes earlier. His gaze went to the desk next, her drawings strewn over them. He remembered watching Koschei poke fun at them, but numbly, like he’d been watching someone else’s body. In a way, he had. But they were actually good━she was talented.
When the door flung open again, he didn’t have the energy to look over. Not right away, at least.
“S’alright.” He said quietly, still somewhat numb. Sonny took another swig of his beer, then cast his tired eyes in her direction. “I’m sorry. Y’know, for what an asshole he is. You deserve more than what that prick gives you.” Sonny said quietly. If he couldn’t make things right with his brother, then at least he could do something good with his time━even if it was just giving her an unsolicited opinion about her relationship. The relationship she was having with his body. If anyone knew what was going on, it was him.
His pinky rested on one of the pages that were left out, shifting it slightly, eyes moving back to the page. Koschei had used Sonny’s identity to reel her in, and he hadn’t revealed the truth until she’d given up too much. The part of Sonny that was still human felt guilty━as if he’d done it himself.

Selene had never considered herself to be naive, in fact she was usually distrusting to most people, trying to figure out if they had some ulterior motive. So, what the fuck happened when it came to Sonny? He wormed his way into her life so damn easily and tricked her into believing he was some caring guy who wanted to help her cure her family. He’d manage to catch her when she was at her weakness. On the verge of drowning but also prepared to give up all hope in saving her niece. When the door creaked open, Selene braced herself for the silence she thought she'd find on the other side. Instead, there was Sonny, sitting slouched on the desk, a beer in his hand and weariness etched into his face. For a moment, she hesitated in the doorway, uncertain if she should turn back around or if she could muster the strength to face him—or whatever version of him this was. It was always Koschei though. Sonny was locked away somewhere else. A chill would run down her spine whenever she thought about it. His apology caught her off guard. She hadn’t expected him to even utter the word sorry. For a long moment, she just stared at him, the weight of his words sinking in, mixing with the bitter cocktail of emotions already swirling inside her. “Sonny?” Was the demon just trying to fuck with her? No, she refused to fall for his games again. She stepped further into the room, her eyes flickering to the drawings on the desk. Her drawings. “Put them back.” Her voice was tight as she spoke. Selene drew a slow breath, trying to calm the storm brewing in her chest. “I don’t… I don’t want him seeing them.” She couldn’t even bring herself to say his name. It stuck in her throat and burned on her tounge. SONNY BECK

━ everybody be cool ━ “THE ONE AND ONLY.” HE PAUSED, THEN scoffed bitterly, “I guess that’s not true.”
He wanted to honour her request, but his hand felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. “He’s gone.” Sonny croaked, “For now, anyway.” He amended, realizing what it sounded like once he’d said it.
He knew she had trouble with it. She never called the demon by his actual name, and maybe that was just ‘cause she’d been introduced to him as ‘Sonny,’ but he was willing to bet it was ‘cause she didn’t like what he was. Now maybe she felt like she couldn’t say it to the actual Sonny… whoever the hell that was.
“They’re real good. You’re talented, y’know. Shouldn’t let him make ya think otherwise.”
He knew she’d asked him to put them away, and Sonny usually would’ve listened (who was he kidding━even back in the day he’d been a mouthy little shit), but he didn’t feel like any of this was real. He still felt like a stranger in his own skin.
Numbly, he lifted the beer to take another swig. “Pardon my manners. Haven’t seen the light of day since… sixty-six. I should be an old man.” The longer he went on, the more he began to sound like he wasn’t talking to her anymore. “Could be your grandfather. No, no…” he chuckled, the sound dim and heavy, “… just a really old dad.” He paused, then said, “Sorry,”
Finally, he looked at her, the haze clearing from his eyes and a twinkle appearing in them━the same one he’d had as a boy, when he stayed out late to flirt with Susie O’Brien. His grin matched it. “You probably don’t wanna hear that ‘bout your guy.” But her man was him, was this body, and Sonny was having a hard time holding onto his humanity━the part that gave a shit.

Selene watched Sonny carefully, her heart tightening as she heard the weight in his voice, the bitterness that hung on every word. He was trying, she could see that, but it didn’t make it any easier to witness. She’d been fooled into thinking she’d met Sonny once before. “Where is he?” Like she even needed to ask. He’d be out there killing innocent people no doubt. “Thank you.” She replied, making no effort to rip the drawings from his hands, “They’re, um… for a children’s book.” She had no idea how the whole demon thing worked. Did Sonny already know everything about Selene? Or had he just been trapped in darkness for decades? Slowly she walked further into the room, carefully lowering herself onto the edge of the bed, still not hundred percent certain it was Sonny she was speaking to. “Sixty-six?” She exclaimed in shock. Koschei hadn’t shared that piece of information with her. Selene broke into a small smile at his comment, “Yeah it’s best we don’t think about that.” It was stomach turning to think she’d jumped into bed with a man who was technically old as fuck. When he finally looked at her, she felt a pang deep inside. The way he looked at her was so familiar and yet so foreign. “He ain’t my guy. He’s a means to an end.” There was an invisible chain keeping her locked to Koschei for the foreseeable. Of course that didn’t mean she had to sleep with him, but it was difficult to resist him. It was addictive the way in which those dark eyes stared down into hers when he was on top of her while she was begging for more. Had Sonny witnessed that too? Had he also felt what it was like to be with Selene? There was something different about Sonny. He lacked the danger Koschei provided, but he seemed sweet and caring. Sympathy started to consume her as she looked back at him. “This power Crowley has given to me. I could try and use it to get rid of him? To bring you back.” Even though it was Sonny behind those dark eyes, they were still drawing her in all the same. SONNY BECK

━ everybody be cool ━ “DEVIL ONLY KNOWS,” HIS MOUTH TWISTED humorlessly, tired eyes skimming over her drawings again. Vaguely, somewhere in the back of his mind, he remembered that fact. A children’s book. That was sweet. She looked all dark and mysterious, but, in reality, she was soft. Maybe that was why she let Koschei treat her like shit all the time.
He hummed appreciatively, though didn’t say anything ‘til he had another mouthful of his beer.
Sonny chuckled softly as he looked over, the sound seeming to break something inside him. He felt a brightness bubble into his chest, and he had to sigh to release it. His eyes watered a little, too, and it was nice to feel that again. A little flutter in his belly, a cold beer, and a conversation with a beautiful woman. Sure, the subject matter wasn’t ideal, but, God, at least he was here.
“Uh huh.” He didn’t sound convinced. He gave her a little grin to make it clear, and sipped from his beer again. Maybe it wasn’t somethin’ to smile about, but, fuck what could he do? “Hope you drop ‘im when it’s all said and done.” But it never would be. She’d bargained with a demon, and Sonny knew all about losing yourself to a deal like that. They played dirty; there was no way out━not with your entire soul, anyway.
Sonny’s eyes studied her where she sat, gentle green eyes admiring her in a way that Koschei never could. That part of him had been burned out by Hell a long, long time ago. Sonny saw past the mental images of what Koschei could do (and had done) with her sitting on the bed’s edge like that. She was beautiful, and smart, and clearly talented. Selene deserved a better option to help fight for her family.
But he couldn’t do anything for himself, let alone her.
He smiled sadly. She wanted to help him. Despite her situation, and everything this body had put her through, she wanted to look out for him. Maybe it was the fact that he was born in a time when women took care of their husbands that had him softening━or maybe it was just that nobody had done anything for him in a long, long time.
“It won’t work.” He said lighty, voice gravelly before swallowing more of his drink. “Nothin’s gonna get him gone. Forces greater than you’ve tried.” ‘You have’ sounded like one word, not just because of the beer, but that accent, too. The sad smile remained on Sonny’s face. He didn’t wanna put Damien into any danger, either. And, if Sonny was being honest, he was too scared. It’d been decades since he’d lived as himself, and he knew he wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Plus, whether or not it worked, he’d kill her for it. No, he’d kill her family and make her watch, make her beg for each of their lives, then he’d kill her. Sonny wouldn’t let that happen. “Thank you anyway.”
He rose slowly, seemingly unsteady for a moment, then meandered to the mini fridge. He took out another beer, popped the cap on the top of it, then shifted his chair so it was facing her a little more. Sonny sat heavily in it. “So, what’s your book about?” He asked, his smile growing again, this time far warmer than it’d ever been.

Koschei hadn’t mentioned a word about where he was heading, so why would he tell Sonny? She smiled slightly at Sonny’s comment, her eyes drifting back to her drawings. The tension she’d been holding onto started to ease when she realised he wasn’t teasing her. A small part of her defences lowered, though not entirely. A nagging doubt lingered—this could still be one of Koschei’s games. She didn’t know how long their deal would last—maybe a lifetime—but Selene was already planning her escape, hunting for some loophole. “Don’t ‘uh-huh’ me,” she shot back, crossing her arms defensively. “It’s not my fault I thought he was someone else... thought he was you.” Whoever the fuck Sonny actually was. The person sitting in front of her was actually a stranger to her. They’d never technically met until today. Still, despite everything, she wanted to help him. But Sonny didn’t seem interested. “You don’t know that for sure,” she pressed. They hadn’t even tried. “But fine. You know where to find me if you change your mind.”She watched as Sonny got up to grab another beer, returning to his spot with a matching smile that signalled a shift in their conversation. Part of her was glad for it. “Well, it’s not really my book. I just do the illustrations for the author.” Selene leaned in closer to show him one of the drawings—a cute rabbit. “It’s about a bunny named Benny. He’s afraid of the dark but loses his favourite toy in the forest, so he decides to venture out one night to find it. Along the way, he meets animals who show him the wonders of the nighttime.” She shuffled the top drawing aside, revealing sketches of other animals. “There’s an owl, some fireflies, a bat,” she said, her gaze drifting back to Sonny. She straightened up, still smiling, “It’s all about facing your fears.” The warmth in her voice lingered, offering him a glimpse of something softer beneath the defences she'd built. SONNY BECK

━ everybody be cool ━ HE LIKED HOW FEISTY SHE WAS. SHE SNAPPED back at him, not taking his disbelief as a valid response, just like something Susie would’ve done back in the day when he was being an asshole. God, that felt like just yesterday. Just yesterday, she’d called him to chew him out for beating up her younger brother, and he told her he’d do it again if he had to. He’d lost Connie already, but then Susie was gone, too.
He wondered how long Selene would last. Surprisingly, it seemed like Koschei was better at keeping women around than Sonny had been, but that was a different time.
Sonny grinned without any response until he got himself a new beer, then he was shifting the chair to face her where she sat, asking about her book instead. Something better, easier to talk about.
She stood up, then she was close again, at his side while he glanced over his shoulder at the drawings. Only for a second, though, ‘cause then his attention was on her, emerald eyes drifting up her arm until he found her face. Koschei had breathed in her scent a hundred times, but this was the first chance Sonny had to do it himself, committing it to memory, letting it envelop and soothe him. He smiled as she talked about her book. In all honesty, it seemed like some soft shit, and nothing he'd read as a child. He was pretty sure even Connie didn’t ever see that kind of thing━if books like that existed when they were children. He remembered Charlotte’s Web from school, and silly books like The Cat in the Hat, but nothing like Benny the Nocturnal Bunny.
Still, he wasn’t Koschei. It was strange to him, but he wasn’t going to fault Selene for that. The world was different, and if he focused too much on it, he’d spiral down a dark path. “That’s sweet.” He smiled, and he didn’t know what made him do it, but he reached up with his free hand and wrapped his fingers around her wrist gently. He just wanted to touch her━touch something that was real. The warmth of her body flooded into his palm, and he felt alive again… just for a few moments━for as long as she’d let him. “You’re gonna get t’read it to your niece one day… when she’s safe.” Sonny said softly. Maybe it wasn’t his place━considering she’d told Koschei and not him━but he wanted to say something nice. She still had a chance to ensure her family had a good life after this. Sonny had sold his soul for the benefit of his siblings, too, but they’d never prospered from it. He wanted this to work for Selene, even if she’d never escape Crowley.
