Hazel had done a pretty job on holding back the crying while she rushed home. A few tears spilled out, but she didn’t go full blown sobbing in case someone saw her. It would have been so embarrassing if someone saw her in public crying. Mascara running down her face and snot everywhere. Then they’d ask what was wrong and she’d have to lie because she couldn’t face accepting her and Lex’s relationship was over. She could literally feel her heart breaking in two. All she wanted to do was get home and climb into bed. Maybe if she went to sleep she would wake up tomorrow and realise it was all just an awful dream. She thought Lex was joking when he suggested they ended their relationship, but then she quickly realised there was no smile on his face, not that he smiled much anyway. He was serious and it all stemmed from Hazel making a few comments about Winter. It seemed to have upset Lex, to the point he decided he and Hazel were no longer girlfriend and boyfriend. Oh gosh, she would need to go on her Instagram and delete all her posts with him. As soon as she stepped into the house she pulled Instagram up on her phone and found Lex’s profile. Zero photos of her on his profile anyway. She furiously hit the unfollow button and threw her phone back into her bag. The house was quiet, leading her to believe it was empty. Then the waterworks started and she began to sob violently. She hated Lex so much and hated Winter even more. Some kind of angry heartbreak was brewing inside of her. She rushed through into the kitchen to grab herself a glass of water. Already her head had started to throb with each violently exhale before she inhaled harshly again. How could he do this to her? They were supposed to go to the movies on Friday then head to the ice cream parlour. She’d even ordered herself a new outfit that was due to be delivered tomorrow. The sound of her own hyperventilating drown out the footsteps coming into the kitchen, but then Hazel clocked her mom out the corner of her eye. “Oh… hey.” She quickly tried to swallow her next sob, quickly wiping the tears from her face which wasn’t kidding anyone. Her mascara was now down to her chin. She was a blubbering mess. “I’ve been dumped.” She blurted out before she started to cry again, “I had this boyfriend and he dumped me.” There was a lot of explaining that needed to be done, but it could wait. She just needed her mom. Hazel peeled herself away from the sink, heading over to her mom. She threw her arms around her mom as she cried into her chest. “I hate him mom. I hate him so much!” Stupid Lex. Stupid Winter. They were welcome to one another FREYJA DAMASCA

━ they set me on fire, and i did a lot of burning ━ TWO BABIES WERE AN ABSOLUTE HANDFUL. It’d been hard enough with one━so hard that she actually befriended Frank of all people━but Freyja had desperately wanted this life. She was happy for it, too. Maybe she would’ve had more practice if Hazel hadn’t somehow become a teenager overnight.
At least it was naptime. Eloise had begun to pick up her brother’s habits when it came to that━fighting them tooth and nail, but she didn’t have Bo’s energy. He kept her awake when Freyja put them down together, and she laid there in the middle of it, feeling like a cow. The “magic boob” was the only way to get them both to sleep without a fight. Thankfully, she had a side for each.
Usually, Freyja slipped away to keep working when they were both down, but she was still off work, and Theo was out taking care of the groceries. So she napped, too━at least until the sound of sobbing woke her up.
It wasn’t either of the babies in her bed, she realized, but the third━or the first, really━downstairs. Freyja would’ve been concerned either way, but she could tell from the sound it wasn’t over just anything.
She double-checked the babies before slipping out of bed, then picked up her half of the monitor and quietly moved downstairs. “Hi, Hazelnut,” she whispered as she found her daughter in the kitchen, one hand stretching out to provide comfort.
Her brows drew together as Hazel began to explain. A boyfriend? She never told them about any guys at all. Before Freyja could ask, though, Hazel was flinging herself at her, and Freyja gladly accepted her daughter into her arms. She squashed her softly, one hand instinctively rubbing her back in small circles, the other cradling the back of Hazeel’s head.
On some level, she was relieved. It wasn’t a dead body she’d been supernaturally drawn to, or a car accident, or any of the fucked up things it could’ve been━had been before. It was just normal teenager stuff.
“I know, I know.” She hummed, “Boys are idiotic and annoyin’. I’m sorry, baby.” Freyja cooed lightly, “You want some tea? Or, better yet, I think we got ice cream.” Freyja grinned, though she didn’t force her daughter to look at her, just let her cry for as long as she wanted. “You wanna tell me ‘bout it?”

A part of her was a tiny bit grateful it was her mom in the house not her dad. If she started sobbing to her dad there was a chance he might start getting upset too, seeing his daughter distraught. Hazel clung tightly to her mom, burying her face in her shoulder as she tried to calm her sobs. The gentle circles her mom rubbed into her back were comforting, a familiar rhythm that always made her feel safe. A tiny smile grew on her face when her mom called boy’s idiotic and annoying. Lex was both. Like how he screwed his face up whenever he spotted any kind of vegetable on his plate when they went out for lunch. It was becoming more and more apparent Lex had a lot of growing up to do. She’d heard from her friends before that boys' brains took longer to develop compared to girls, but never witnessed it until now. Lex was practically a kid next to Hazel. A stupid kid who she hated. Finally, she sniffled and pulled back just enough to speak, wiping at her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. “Ice cream sounds good.” She spoke softly, trying to muster up a small smile. She pulled away from her mom, pulling herself up onto a stool at the counter. “I feel so stupid cryin’ over a boy.” She complained with a sigh. “We met a while ago... he's a psychic... he can do stuff with technology." It was beyond her mind "I was gonna bring him home to meet you and dad, but couldn’t find the right time.” Her shoulders sank even lower, “Basically he lives in the hotel. Don’t ask why ‘cause I don’t really understand, but he shares the room with this girl he’s friends with and I suggested maybe he moves out to find an apartment… somewhere he’s not sharing a room with this girl.” She shook her head, feeling the tears welling up again, “We had a big argument and he dumped me.” She brushed away the fresh tears that were now spilling from her eyes. Reciting the story back to her mom made her feel like a jealous overprotective girlfriend. FREYJA DAMASCA
