━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY KNEW BETTER THAN TO KEEP POKING the bear that was fate, or her curse, or… whatever the fuck it was. She should’ve left Lawrence to believe she’d chosen someone else over him, that she couldn’t wait for him after he’d lost his humanity. She should’ve let him go on thinking she didn’t feel anything for him.
This was selfish of her, and she knew that, but she couldn’t help herself. She knew━or, rather, hoped━he’d be there when Winter suggested they go to the club. Penny had been holding herself back from making that stupid decision all week, but it didn’t count if someone else said it, right?
She barely hesitated before agreeing. Penny fretted over her outfit, then reminded herself that she was too fucking old to still be feeling giddy over a man she could never have, but it didn’t help whatsoever. She could barely wait to get there that night… if only to drink in the corner and never actually go up to him.
Eventually, though, she’d need another drink, and Winter would be off God-knows-where, so Penny would be forced to approach the bar herself.
Her heart squeezed in her chest as she saw him up close. She’d already seen him tonight, of course, but not like this. Not since she broke his heart in her doorway.
Penny dropped her empty glass on the bar and slid it towards him. “Whiskey sour.” She said, honey eyes slowly sliding up to meet his. Penny couldn’t help herself━a small smile grew on her lips, a hint of sadness in it. “Please.” She added after a moment, then looked down the bar like anything interesting was happening.
She remembered their first meeting here. How she’d flirted shamelessly, then took his daylight ring off with her mouth and he hadn’t had a clue. If she’d known it would’ve led here, or that she would’ve liked having someone stuck in the darkness with her so much, she never would’ve done it━no matter how pretty that ring was. Still, she found herself realizing that she didn’t regret it even now━even when it hurt.
“So… they let you have your old job back, huh?” Penny asked softly, her eyes skating back to his, but only after she’d finished speaking━like he was an afterthought. That was so far from the truth.

Slipping back into his old routine wasn’t easy. For starters Kit was constantly watching him, almost like he was waiting for Lawrence to fuck up at some point. He’d promised to be on his best best behaviour, which meant turning up to work on time and not sinking countless shots at the bar without paying for them. Whenever they needed someone to stay late he was expected to volunteer. Whenever Kit said to jump, Lawrence was to ask how high. He couldn’t be too pissed about the situation considering he left a member of staff bleeding to death in the store cupboard. Most employers would not take you back after that. In fact the cops would have been called. Routine was exactly what he needed though. He was desperately trying to move past what had happened since Halloween. Working at the bar gave him a reason to climb out of bed in the morning, rather than sinking back into the mattress and becoming consumed by guilt. The tiny fucking violin was to be put away. It seemed almost everyone around him had forgiven him. He crouched down to the fridge, pulling out beer for himself to enjoy while the bar had quietened down. As he straightened up and turned back around he met Penny’s gaze. Suddenly he didn’t want his beer, completely overcome by nausea. He didn’t speak immediately, concerned he would throw up if he opened his mouth. Nonetheless, he gave her a weak smile back. Why the fuck did he decide to fall for someone in Mystic Falls aka the smallest town ever? “Sure.” He grabbed a glass from down below and started making her drink, keeping his focus locked on that. After walking away from her apartment he tried to convince himself that he and Penny weren't a good idea anyway. He spent days searching for reasons why they shouldn’t be together, trying to pick apart everything. He was happy to give her the drink, take the payment and carry on with his night, but she struck up some kind of conversation with him. “Yeah. I somehow managed to convince them to take me back.” He would have done the same with Penny, but clearly that ship had sailed by now. “How come you’re here, eh? You hate leaving the house.” This time he broke into a more genuine smile as he pushed the drink across the bar to her. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ WHAT WAS SHE EXPECTING? FOR LAWRENCE TO fall to his knees? Weep at the sight of her? Maybe more than a smile and a ‘sure.’ He looked sad to see her, though, and she had to war with how that made her feel. Was she happy that he still cared about her? Or was it upsetting to know that it hadn’t been fleeting, that he hadn’t moved on? She wondered how long it would take him, and, while she didn’t want to cause him pain, she was torn over that, too.
Getting over her meant they wouldn’t share these feelings anymore. And even after five centuries and as many lovers, Penny still hadn’t learned how to completely close herself off from this. Perhaps she never would, as it would completely erase the part of her that was still human.
And wasn’t that funny. She’d just be Lawrence without emotions━the way he’d been when she had realized what she’d done━and how late it was for them.
Her smile only grew with his. Penny watched Lawrence’s hands as he made the drink, how the veins in his forearms flexed.
They took him back. She hadn’t, though. Or rather, he hadn’t let her, which was the issue here, she supposed. It hadn’t ended on her terms. “Good for you,” and although it sounded like she couldn’t care less, she meant it. Penny was happy that Lawrence could have his life back after what’d happened to him━that not everything was just stolen from him and remained broken even after he’d come back.
For you. Like a child, she almost said it. I’m here for you. Like a schoolgirl who couldn’t keep her feelings under control.
Penny laughed lightly and glanced over her shoulder like she could see Winter, then looked back at Lawrence and shrugged. “Winter convinced me it was a good idea. And the sun’s down, so, y’know… it’s safe for creatures like me.” Her mouth twisted upwards at the insinuation that she was some sort of cave-dweller, but what she really wanted to say was, Why haven’t you been at the coffee shop lately? Did you only go because of me? Can we meet there again? Pretend like everything’s normal between one a.m. and five?
God, she was going to make herself sick with all of this. It was fucking pathetic.
“Thanks.” She mumbled as she took her drink and sipped from it, wishing she could say anything else.
“Is it weird?” She blurted, then looked over her shoulder again, this time to indicate the demon with the blonde hair that went all the way past her ass. It was the most amount of covering she had on. “To keep working with her?” Her eyes found Lawrence’s again. “Maybe not ‘weird’... but nerve-racking? Does it bother you?” And what was she going to do if it did? Tell the demon off? Beat her up? Lawrence’s sister tried all of that, and look where it got them.

Lawrence’s heart twisted at the sight of Penny. He kept his composure, but the sadness he felt was undeniable. It wasn’t what he had expected— seeing her again so soon which was silly considering he worked at the only club in town. The memories flooded back, overwhelming him. Each time he’d thought about Penny recently it felt like someone had swung a weight into his chest. It was crushing. But he was an immortal being so he needed to find a way to deal with the pain and move on. There were women before Penny and there would be women after her. His gaze moved past Penny and he spotted Winter in the distance, but quickly his eyes returned to Penny’s face. He mirrored her expression, a small smile growing on his face. God he’d missed spending time with her in the coffee shop. Laughing and sipping on his black Americano until the sun started to rise. They couldn’t slip back into that routine again. Everything was just so damn complicated now. A one night stand had snowballed into Lawrence developing feelings for Penny. Strong fucking feelings. “Can you, um, tell Winter I’m sorry for being so rude to her when she came to find me… to tell me about you.” He wasn’t exactly welcoming to her as he was too busy thinking about how he wanted her number. Then when Penny was back he was looking for a way to sleep with Winter just to upset Penny. As she took the drink Lawrence was about to leave from behind the bar, hoping to sneak off to the storeroom for a few minutes to be alone, to process seeing Penny’s face. But she spoke again, blurting out a question about Hannya. This time he kept his gaze locked on Penny rather than letting it trail off in Hannya’s direction. Mainly because he didn’t want Hannya to look over and make eye contact with him. “It’s tough… everytime I look at her I’m reminded of everything that went wrong.” Reminded of how I lost you. But what choice did he have? “I brought it on myself though. Teddy told me to stay away from demons like three years ago and I didn’t listen and… well here we are.” We. Him and Penny. They had a chance to be something but Lawrence destroyed what they had. It was beyond fixable, so they were just trying to move past it. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY NODDED, A SOFT SMILE ON HER FACE AS she practically whispered, “Sure,” but she probably wouldn’t say anything to Winter. It’d open up the floor for questions, and Penny was not prepared for that━to tell anybody anything.
She didn’t know why she asked about Hannya. Penny knew it would produce this reaction━the one that had her gut curling━but she did it anyway. He had a constant reminder of what he’d done, and even though Penny wished she could say it was good of him to suffer, she didn’t want that for Lawrence.
“It’s not your fault.” Penny said before she could stop herself, “You had to save your sister. And… you work with her. You’re going to be around her all of the time━she would’ve done something to hurt you either way.” Demons were just that━demons. They fed on the suffering of others.
Her heart squeezed every time she looked at him, and Penny couldn’t do it anymore. She knew she shouldn’t have come tonight, but she had to see him. At least she wasn’t rude━giving Lawrence another reason to stay away. Maybe she should’ve been shittier to him.
“I should go find Winter.” Penny said lightly, offering Lawrence that same small, sad smile. “Have a good night.” Because she likely wouldn’t see him at the coffee shop anymore━all of their nights were in the past now. Penny took one last look at him before turning away, squeezing her glass as if it would relieve any of the pressure from her heart.
