Lena had never felt the need to be territorial with Pierre. They’d been married over a hundred and fifty years. Longer than the average lifespan of a human. She knew there was no chance of him straying away because they were absolutely devoted to one another. They were soulmates. Even for the years they were apart during the second world war she never questioned his fidelity. But then a brunette woman walked into the casino asking to speak to Pierre. She handed Lena a piece of paper with her telephone number written on it, asking Lena to pass it onto Pierre. Lena didn’t launch for the woman immediately, instead she questioned her. Why would Pierre want her number? Well, because he’d been flirting with her last time she was in the bar, calling her beautiful. The woman, who revealed her name was Lottie, started rambling on about how her therapist told she needed to do things outside her comfort zone and apparently giving her number to a man was one of those things. Lena walked off mid-sentence, unable to stand there a minute longer. Lena rushed out into the storeroom biting back the tears as she looked down at the piece of paper. It never occurred to that during the time her husband couldn't remember his wife he could have climbed into bed with another woman. Was it adultery? She hoped Pierre would have told her immediately if something like that happened, but then again he didn’t tell her about Lottie. Just like he didn’t tell her about Mal either. What other secrets was he hiding? She paced back and forth in the store room trying to hold herself together, for the sake of the building if anything. If she lost her temper then the roof could rip straight off the casino, which would cost a lot of money to replace. Pierre would be paying for the roof if that happened. Lena had almost pulled herself together when the door into the storeroom opened. Immediately when she saw her husband her anger went from a level ten to a level fifty. “Lottie has just visited.” She held the piece of paper out to him, “She give you her number.” She scrunched the paper up and threw it in Pierre’s direction, “She said you flirt with her! How could you Pierre?” The tears started to well in her eyes as she glared at Pierre. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ THINGS WERE OKAY AGAIN━FINALLY. BAXTER was still half vampire, but he was at school, and things had settled. His wife was back, and Pierre never had to suffer through another night alone━another night in a cold bed. He was working with Mal again━they were━and it was like a flashback to a century ago… the life they used to live. Except now, Mal had a weakness, and they were well aware of how easily he’d cross them. And they knew what he’d come to their son━and that he felt no remorse for it.
Now, Pierre could run the casino with his wife and live his life blissfully. She’d renamed it, of course, but Pierre had grinned as they discussed it. Some part of him had still known━still reached out for her.
Pierre carried a box of alcohol from the back room and into the casino, walking the same route back and forth for the newest shipment. It would’ve been nice to have staff to help him, but it wasn’t as much stock as usual, and Pierre could probably lift as much as his human employees combined.
He shouldered his way into the storeroom, smiling brightly at Lena. Before she even spoke, he noticed her anger, and his smile began to falter.
The moment he heard her name, Pierre cringed, twisting to set the box down. As he straightened back up, the paper bounced off his chest, and he frowned deeply. “Mon cœur,” He breathed, a tightness in his chest forming as he saw the tears build in Lena’s eyes. The last thing he ever wanted was to make her sad━it brought him more pain than anything else.
“It was while you were gone,” He admitted, dark eyes flicking over her face as if he was afraid to meet her eye. “I did not know you even existed, mon amour.” Pierre shook his head weakly, “But I did not do more dzan buy ‘er a drink. It felt wrong,” He stepped forward, taking her hands tentatively. “Per’aps I knew, somewhere inside, zat I was waiting for you.” Lena always had little tolerance for his schmoozing, but this was true. Yes, he didn’t want to be in trouble, but, most of all, he desperately wanted to extinguish the look of pain on her face.
