━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA SAT ON HER BED WITH HER LEGS CROSSED and stared at her computer screen, trying to figure out the best way to go about her final assignment for her Entrepreneurial Journalism class. She had to create her own blog and put together a PowerPoint presentation to basically sell herself to the teacher. Her eyes kept flicking to the time in the corner of her screen, though, ‘cause she didn’t know how much longer she’d have before Kitty and Bram started watchin’, like, a movie or somethin’ and she got totally distracted.
The sound of water in the shower was kind of calming━like white noise━and when it stopped, she puffed out a breath. Really, it didn’t make a huge difference, but it was an excuse to get distracted again. She moved the cursor towards the tabs she’d opened for Mal’s birthday, but then grumbled and went back to her document.
Krista glanced up as she heard footsteps coming down the hallway, then saw Bram appear. “Hey!” She called out, even if he looked like he was on the way to Kitty’s room━especially ‘cause he still had a towel around his waist. She hadn’t said hello today, but he was kind of just always around, and Krista thought that was cute. She hoped they started dating━then her and Kitty could talk about boyfriend stuff! And maybe go out on a double-date━wait, yeah, no way. “Wait, wait! C’mere. I need help.” Krista said, straightening up a little. She also tried not to drool as he walked in. Sheesh, he just walked around lookin’ like that?
“What do ya think is my Most Marketable Trait?” She read from her screen, then looked up at him with a small, focused frown. “Like, I was gonna put down ‘talkative,’ but I don’t think that’s… right.” Krista snorted, “Friendly? Approachable?” She asked, then looked down at her screen again, her face starting to heat as she blushed. “Did ya ever do any business or accounting classes? There’s so much stuff in here ‘bout personal finances that just looks like gibberish.”

Water pounded down on his face, hotter than the room temperature trickle he tended to get at his place. He guessed that pooling funds for a two bedroom place meant an upgrade in the bathroom too. Bram still had to bend like a contortionist to get under the spray, but it was worth it to feel the hot water pummelling his skin. After last night he’d needed it. Arriving at Kitty’s place in the early hours of the morning, waking up on the couch probably oozing the scent of whatever he'd ended up drinking from his pores. There'd been something in a shot glass that'd looked like a brain for the two seconds it had taken to slam it down his throat. More after that, sticky, sweet, smoky, strong enough that his brain felt too big for his skull this morning.
Music had pounded through his bones, Kitty's mood and the excitement of the crowd bleeding through him. Work had been forgotten after the first drink. There hadn’t been time to even complain about only having today off before he was back there, let alone let his brain wander towards the quagmire of what was happening in his life lately. Kitty was still working to help him figure that out, but all he’d realised so far, thanks to the video camera they’d left running, was that he apparently was apparently a sleepwalker. Tonight he’d set the camera again, hoping that the lingering exhaustion would mean he was too tired to even lever himself up out of the bed. There was some relief in that. Kitty’s assurances had pushed back some of the fear about what was going on with him, but he wasn’t ready to just accept sleep deprivation as the reason for what had happened at Whitmore yet.
Burying his nose into the skin of his bicep, Bram took a sniff. Clean, smelling like whatever Kitty used in the shower – the bottle he was now gonna replace for her because he’d taken a good chunk out of it. His lips curled, it’d mean carrying a little of her scent with him and she always smelled good. He shut off the shower and stepped out, wrapping one of their towels around his hips. A scrunch of another through his hair and he realised the gym bag with his fresh clothes was still in Kitty’s room. Shit.
Foregoing putting last night's clothes back on, Bram padded out of the bathroom. Wasn’t like Kitty hadn’t seen just as much on the video cam footage. He wasn’t halfway there when he heard Kitty’s roommate call out. Bram took a step back, grinning at her. ”Hey,” he said brightly. He hadn’t known Krista at Whitmore, but since he’d started hanging with Kitty here, he’d seen plenty of her room mate too. The thought of moving on again to at least get some underwear on beneath the too small rectangle of terrycloth derailed as Krista called him into her room.
”I’m off the clock for the medical stuff,” he joked as he walked into her room. ”I guess you could call this a house call, though, huh?” Bram chuckled, carefully rolling the towel up a little more around his waist to secure it. He kept a hand on it, fingers wrapped around that top edge like it’d stop it falling open as he met Krista’s eye. She was frowning, like her brain had squelched down around the question, trying to squeeze the best answer out of it.
Shrugging, Bram studied her face, like he’d glean some other side of Krista out of it. ”Friendly’s pretty good. Approachable is better. How about excellent communication skills? That kinda covers both. Open minded? You've been super welcoming to me.” She looked down at her screen again then, a blush working its way up her face. Bram took a step closer, snorting as he shook his head. ”Nah. I tried to avoid all that stuff when I went to college the first time. The second time around it was all science stuff. I can tell you how to start an IV, but when it comes to budgeting? I’m useless. What kinda classes are ya taking?” he asked, leaning in over her to get a look at the screen. A bashful grin tugged at his face. Maybe if he was a little better at that he’d have an apartment with hot running water.
Hearing the front door close, Bram went to straighten up. He hadn’t heard Kitty head out, but maybe she’d gone to grab snacks or something to keep them going for the rest of the evening. ”I could’ve bought stuff with me if you guys needed anything.” It wasn’t Kitty standing in the doorway though. Some dark haired guy who looked like someone had just pissed in his Cheerios was standing there, narrowed eyes ticking from him to Krista. Was this the boyfriend he’d half heard about in one of Krista’s effervescent (he’d paid attention in English class at least) conversations? ”Hey.” The greeting came out of grinning lips. Krista might’ve been friendly, but this guy looked like he needed a bomb disposal tech to diffuse whatever had him twitching.

Ma Coeur. Mwah mwah mwah. Fucking nag, nag, nag too. If he had to hear much more of the frog and his bitter wife he’d end up begging them to kill him just to put him out of his misery. They’d probably jump at the chance, but Krista … Fuck.
Climbing into his car in the hospital parking lot, Mal threw his phone into the back seat. If it hadn’t been for her he’d never have had the pair of them clinging onto his coat tails again. In a few months (or a few years at the rate the Doc was going), they’d have sauntered out of this shit hole, the only sign they’d ever been there the trail of new and unusual supes left behind. Maybe in a century or two he’d have got a little sentimental about his old pals, the same way he had gotten about the navy, but no way would he ever have gone looking for them.
Krista was the rope between them now, the one that was gonna tie him to them until Pierre and Lena thought he’d done enough to make up for what had happened to their son. The resulting tug of war had left her head filled with cotton wool here he was concerned and even now it could tear her apart if he wasn’t careful to keep up the valuable team member bollocks. If he found out the secret had been spilled the Doc would tear him apart, but for the minute he was blind to what was happening.
Mal pulled out of the parking lot and headed in the direction of Krista’s apartment. The doctor was out for the day and the supposedly doting boyfriend was in. He’d creep into their apartment, bypassing Kitty if he could help it, coaxing Krista into her bedroom with him. Talking her into meeting him at the motel would’ve been easier maybe, but it was about time Kitty got used to the idea that he wasn’t gonna skitter around the edges of Krista’s life just because she hated his guts. It’d been one little attempt at a nibble for God’s sake – the wince rolled through him before he could shrug it off, Krista was definitely too far under his skin – he hadn’t sweet talked her into bed and drained off a pint the same way he had done the first night he’d met Krista. Maybe one day the two of them would get that. Nah, he thought, puffing out a breath, Krista would never get that. He’d practically cheated on her in her head, there was no retouching that notion.
Hunger gnawed at his gut as he drove across town. The lab had been slow all morning, no chances popping up to siphon a little snack off. Going straight back to the motel and summoning Krista there would just add to how long it’d take to really satisfy himself. Later he could go back to work, a little last narky, his veins humming with Krista’s blood, like he’d drunk in a gallon of sunshine.
Most would’ve said that the apartment wasn’t exactly luxurious, but his motel room probably would’ve fitted into it four times over. Mal scanned the front of the building as he pulled up and got out. Given what she was that still wouldn’t be enough room for Kitty’s liking when he tugged Krista off into her room. She’d have to clamp her hands over her ears, or, you know, go out to work like most other people in this town.
The hunger pangs grew sharper as the lift rattled its way up. By the time he slipped in through the apartment door with the key he’d coaxed out of Krista he was ready to dive right in. Gums aching, he slipped through a thankfully empty living room, heading towards Krista’s bedroom. He could hear heartbeats, he knew she was there and wanted to have hers fluttering as he sank his teeth in and …
Who the fuck was that?
Some gigantic solid lump of muscle half hid his view of her. Glad in just a towel he might as well have been sprawled over Krista half naked. If one of those oversized hands reached for her he’d break every fucking finger on it. He straightened up, lurking a handful of inches over him. Mal’s gaze locked on that smug smile, his eyes narrowing. ”I think you’ve forgotten somethin’, don’t you mate?” he growled through gritted teeth. ”Got a new friend eh?”
His gaze cut down to Krista, the colour in her cheeks sending a rush of heat through his own face. ”Couldn’t wait for me, could ya. I guess that’s turning into a new habit.” The last words were turned solely on her, the sasquatch cut out for the moment. She’d done it with the party at the hotel at Christmas. Now this was another leap forward. He’d known Krista was capable of sly little digs, but after she’d spent all that time lecturing him about his loyalty, here she was with some oversized muscle bound moron, blushing all pretty the way she usually did with him.

Kitty was always the one hanging off the bar insisting everyone did some kind of shot with her, usually tequila. Kit wasn’t working that evening to get dragged into Kitty’s antics, although he’d become way more sensible over the years. Sometimes he even said no to doing a shot with Kitty, which caused her to look at him with a face of pure disgust. How dare he turn down a shot. But then again he was some important manager at the club now. He had responsibilities, whatever the fuck they were. All was good though because she had Bram with her that evening. She dragged him off toward the bar, ordering countless shots. Course had no problems knocking them back, feeling a slight buzz eventually. When she woke up the following morning the taste of tequila was still lingering in her mouth, even though she made sure to brush her teeth before climbing into bed. Ugh. She rolled onto her side, reaching for the glass of water she’d placed at the side of her bed the following evening. It wasn’t there for the hangover, but to wash away the taste of the night before. She rolled back onto her back, the shoulder brushing against Bram’s. Kitty had forgotten she had invited him back to her apartment after the club had closed. Nothing had happened. They both stumbled through the door and passed out the minute their heads hit the pillow. Kitty had no intention of anything happening either. She suggested he stayed with her incase he sleptwalked somewhere. She wouldn’t have been much helped if he did climb out of bed anyway, considering she was completely out of it until the sun started creeping through the blinds. She rubbed her eyes gently as she reached for her phone to check the time. It was a relief not having to reach for her eye patch. It still hung off her bed frame though, as a little reminder. In secret her grandmother had been going through her savings to set aside enough for Kitty to have a glass eye fitted. It was rare Kitty was brought to tears, but when her grandmother presented her with the money she sobbed with happiness. Once Bram had left the bedroom she quickly jumped of bed. They had a plan to watch movies all afternoon and rot on the couch with sugary sweets. But then again Bram was drunk when he made the deal. Perhaps he wanted to rush off home, feeling he may have overstepped the mark with Kitty. Sometimes he was a little difficult to read, but whatever Krista would have a movie marathon with her. While Bram was in the shower Kitty threw all her dirty laundry into a pile in the corner and the rest of her clothes were thrown into the wardrobe, not on hangers or anything. Just stuffed into the bottom of her wardrobe. Her bedroom resembled a typical female room before a night out. Outfit choices everywhere, with her makeup bag sprawled across her dresser. Her tidying was brought to a halt when she heard Krista’s voice from her bedroom, speaking with Bram. Oh fuck, what was her friend doing? Within a few minutes Krista would probably get herself excited and refer to Bram as Kitty’s boyfriend, claiming it was a slip of the tongue. She quickly searched the pile of clothes in her wardrobe, pulling out a black sweater to throw on so she could rush outside to save Bram. But then she heard his voice. Fucking tea sipping asshole. Kitty ripped her bedroom door open, to find the three of them lingering in Krista’s bedroom. Already she was enraged by the way in which Mal was speaking to Krista, suggesting something was going on between Bram and Krista. Before launching into an attack though she took a deep breath. The last thing she wanted was for her claws to grow, terrifying poor Bram. “Krista! I see you’ve finally met my friend Bram.” She beamed as she approached them, keeping her attention on Krista and Bram, although mainly Bram. She’d caught glimpses of him on the camera when he was getting out of bed to go on his little midnight journey, but he was even better in the flesh. She’d been sleeping next to him all night and hadn’t even taken the chance to curl her hand around his chest. Goddamn tequila shots. “We’ve just woken. Heavy night at the club.” She flashed Bram a quick smile. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ “YEAH, BUT S’EASY T’BE WELCOMIN’ T’YOU. YOU ain’t a weirdo.” Krista snorted, though she was pretty sure that was the last bit of air she possessed as he leaned over her. Holy heck, he was so hot. She could smell the shower on him still, too━all soapy and clean and… warm water-y. She could feel how warm he was━was she going crazy? Or was it just easier to tell when it wasn’t your literally-cold-and-undead boyfriend? Mal had been warm like this before━she’d seen (and touched) his skin inside and outside of the shower━but this was uncharted territory. Bram was new and… beautiful, and… shoot, he was talking to her.
“Um━” She brought her attention back to the screen (he was smiling and blushing, too!), shifting it a little so he could see better, but, honestly, she didn’t want him to think she didn’t want him so close━she also didn’t want him to move away ‘cause he could see better. Sheesh, she was gonna have to tell Kitty about how much of a dreamboat her boyfriend was later. “Just… this’s for Entrepreneurial Journalism, so it’s about runnin’ your own business ‘n stuff. We have to do, like, business management-type stuff with it, but, honestly, I hope I just get a job somewhere where somebody else’s doin’ my payroll, ‘cause this sucks.” She laughed somewhat sheepishly, like she was still trying to grasp at limited breath.
Bram spoke to the sound of the front door like it was Kitty, but Krista figured Kitty was still in her room━who the heck was that?
Ohmygosh.
Krista was never allowed to have boys in her room. Actually, no boys wanted to come to her room, so it was never a problem, but she could only imagine high school Krista hearin’ about this. Two guys in her room━one of which was her literal boyfriend━and he was not the half-dressed one.
It wasn’t a bad thing, though, right? Clearly Bram had just been in the shower, and she was just asking him about school. Plus, Mal didn’t seem like he cared ‘bout what she did (unless it was sending the whole school a video from his phone), so there shouldn’t-a been a problem.
From the sound of Mal’s voice, though, there totally was.
“This’s Bram…” Krista started slowly when Mal said she had a new friend, totally unsure why he was already upset. He looked at her finally, and then he was just mean. What the heck did she do?!
She did not like the way he was talkin’ to her! And if she was gonna make a habit of standin’ up for herself like she’d done at the Christmas party, then the streak hadta continue here. He was bein’ rude when she hadn’t done nothin’ wrong.
“What’s that supposedta mean?” Krista asked sharply. His comment about a “habit” didn’t sit well with her━what fricken habits?! Being the best, most patient girlfriend in the world while he ran around bein’ an A-hole? “And whaddaya mean wait for you? How can I wait if I didn’t even know you were comin’ over?” She puffed, sandy brows furrowed at Mal.
Kitty was the next person to pile into her bedroom via the narrow doorway, and Krista’s eyes dragged away from Mal to find her, her expression softening before confusion pulled at it again. Met Bram? ‘Course she’d met Bram, she already knew Bram…
Krista looked up at him, at Kitty, then back to Bram. Oh. It was ‘cause Mal didn’t know him. “Yeah, I was… askin’ him for advice with my project. ‘Cause he also went to Whitmore.” She said the last part at Mal, hazel eyes narrowing a bit in emphasis.

Considering what had been going on with him at Whitmore before he’d left the school, Bram wasn’t so sure he entirely believed Krista’s reassurances that he wasn’t a weirdo. Shit had been strange, the blank spots in his memory a constant worry – like if he had a TBI from all the hits he’d taken on the ice, would they let him keep his medical license? He guessed that, thankfully, Kitty hadn’t told her about all that was going on. It had him feeling better about it, although that warmth might just have been a combination of the shower and the alcohol that was still buzzing in his system.
”Could always get one at the hospital, they got a whole department for that,” Bram told her, still grinning. ”They’ve got a PR department too. I’m sure you’d be great at that.” Only that probably wasn’t what a course like ‘Entrepreneurial Journalism’ was designed for. Krista was probably looking to be some big name journalist one day, working for some TV news program in New York or LA. Pretty and blonde, the sort they’d probably call perky, she’d look right at home on camera.
He’d have asked if Kitty agreed with him about Krista’s most marketable trait was, but the noise of someone coming into the apartment hadn’t been her in the end. The fact that the guy had keys made it clear that he was meant to be there, but apparently he wasn’t meant to be. Bram straightened up, glad he stood at least a handful of inches taller than this guy. Looking down at his bare chest, Bram felt the urge to cross his arms over it, but he held a hand out to the guy all the same. ”Like she said. I’m Bram.” Saying it was a pleasure meeting him would’ve been a lie. The guy had a sharp edge to his voice that he didn’t like and one glance at Krista showed she didn’t like it either.
When the guy didn’t shake his hand, Bram took a half step back. Somehow he’d ended up in the middle of an argument and it definitely wasn’t where he was comfortable being. He’d never been one of those big guys who constantly felt the need to prove themselves in a fight. This guy looked like he’d been in a few though. Either he’d lived a seriously hard life or Krista was dating a guy old enough to be her dad. Wait? Was this her dad? Nah. There was too much tension for that.
He squinted between the two of them, then puffed out a relieved breath when Kitty showed up. ”Hey,” he murmured to her before he stopped. Just met. Wait, it wasn’t the first time he’d met Krista, he’d been over here enough, had been to the club enough with the two of them now that he … oooooh. ”I’m still feeling it,” Bram admitted to Kitty, like she wasn’t. ”Thanks for letting me stay over and use the shower. Krista saw me on the way back to your room.” And her boyfriend had obviously then strolled in to the middle of what he thought was something way worse. A guy in a towel in the middle of his girlfriend’s room. Like he ever woulda busted up a relationship.
”Sorry I couldn’t be more help,” Bram said sheepishly, shrugging at Krista. ”I guess I shouldn’t take sone business courses when I was there instead of just the medical stuff.” Although that might come in handy, he realised as he glanced back at the guy. He looked like he was chewing on wasps, his mouth pinching down so that the beard that surrounded it almost swallowed up his lips. His gaze was ticking back and forth between him and Krista, never flicking to Kitty for more than just a heartbeat. ”How ‘bout I make some lunch for you guys as a thanks for last night? If you’ve got groceries in that you don’t mind me using.” He’d have asked if the guy was staying, but that felt like he’d be poking the hornet’s nest. Anger felt like it could sizzle out of the guy in an instant and he didn’t wanna be trying to stop him in the middle of Krista’s bedroom, he already felt bad enough for her.

He’d have asked what the fuck he’d done this time to earn this malicious little bit of payback, but Krista was likely to just screech everything. No matter how hard he’d tried to avoid setting off the landmine of her temper since he’d gotten her back, he’d still hear that quiet click of warning from time to time. A question would spill out of Krista’s mouth and he knew that her brains were smoking with whatever it was she thought she knew. Had he seen the professor again? Why was he a half hour late coming home from work? Why the fuck had he shown up at the hotel when he’d told her there was no way on fucking earth she’d get him there? All that shade she’d thrown at him and she was the one with a half-naked bloke standing in her bedroom now.
Mal drew himself up as tall as he could when the bloke straightened up, like somehow he’d grow another five inches to end up standing eye to eye with him. The bigger they came, the bigger they fell after all. Bram, what sort of a stupid fucking was that? Krista had said it like it was meant to mean something to him. He snorted, glancing at her for an explanation he doubted was coming now that her face was screwing up that way. ”Good for you,” Mal muttered. His gaze dropped as a hand was offered to him, but he didn’t bother taking it. He’d do that if he found out he’d actually laid one of those mitts on Krista. Literally.
”Christmas,” Mal shot back at Krista as she started firing questions at him. Yeah, in her head, he was definitely the one who’d screwed up again. Cause a good boyfriend would’ve been alright with some fella wearing nothing but a towel fawning all over his woman. Like fuck he would. Maybe a good boyfriend wouldn’t have torn his throat out for it, but he’d never claimed to be a good bloke. ”What was the point in givin’ me a key if you didn’t want me over ‘ere? What did you think I was gonna be doin’ tonight?” Her. Obviously.
They weren’t one of them couples where they had to spend every waking minute tonight – God, he would’ve lost his fucking mind by now if he had to, but it wasn’t like they went a week without seeing each other either. Krista had slowly stripped away all of his other places to feed and, alright, maybe he’d liked having her right there in his bed. Thanks to Kitty it wasn’t like he’d been able to end up in Krista’s too often. And there she was, wading in between the two of them. Mal puffed out a breath, rolling his eyes as she tried to lighten things up. I see you’ve finally met my friend. Plenty of evidence on the my as though it was her bedroom they were in, instead of Krista’s.
Mal slipped his hands into his pockets, angling towards those two. Hazel eyes narrowed, studying their faces for some sign of guilt. It wasn’t any good looking at Krista’s for that. She had absolutely zero poker face, but that meant every tiny feeling was blown up in her expression. ”All three of ya at the club, eh? I bet sasquatch ‘ere loved havin’ two women hangin’ off of him.” No amount of goofy good natured humour could cover up a bloke’s ego when something like that happened, and unlike him, Bram was probably welcome at the club.
”Don’t look like he’d be much help,” Mal snorted, sounding more bitter than he wanted to be. Jealousy didn’t sit well on him, but that had finally rubbed off of Krista onto him enough that he was sounding just like her. This fucking bond between them was gonna drive him nuts in the end. He dragged a hand over his face, a dismissive smirk pulling at his lips as he dropped it. ”He cooks too? Look at ‘im, the perfect little house husband.” Some Michelin starred crap would probably be served up – not that he’d have any appreciation for it. His meal was still sitting in Krista’s veins and if he carried on this way he wasn’t gonna get a single sip of it.
Wait. Had he said the medical stuff? Mal took a step closer, glancing over at Kitty before he started to study those oversized slabs of muscle. Was he working at the hospital? Had he passed him in a corridor. ”You’re a nurse huh?” he asked, like being a medical student wasn’t more likely. He could imagine this one playing Nurse Ratched, keeping all the docs in line. If there was a perfect package Krista could’ve picked to piss him off, it would’ve looked a lot like this one and he didn’t like seeing it one fucking bit.

Great. Krista had gone and giving a key to Mal, which meant he’d be popping in whenever he fucking wanted. It was a conversation she could have with Krista later. Mal needed to start dropping messages to Krista before coming over. Kitty could have been strolling about the apartment completely naked for all she knew, although very unlikely. The only place you’d catch her naked outside of her bedroom and shower was in the woods once a month. Waking up with her face buried in the leaves feeling completely out of it was something she’d probably never get used to. What the hell did Krista even see in Mal? It was mainly a taboo subject between the pair of them but as she watched Mal get all upset about Bram being in the apartment she couldn’t help but think ew. Major ick alert. Kitty hadn’t had a chance to warn Bram about the British asshole who walked around like he owned the place. There was a time Kitty actually liked Mal. She was excited her best friend had found an amazing boyfriend, but the word amazing didn’t apply anymore. Kitty could feel the anger peak inside of her, bubbling over like a saucepan of water which had been left on the hob for too long. If she didn’t put a lid on it promptly claws would start to form. She turned her attention to Bram though, trying to keep her rage until control. Now wasn’t the time to go full wolf in front of a man who was already convinced he was losing his mind, “Yeah maybe those last few shots weren’t a good idea.” But then Mal spoke again, suggesting the three of them went out together, swinging off Bram’s ridiculously muscled arms. “Actually, Krista didn’t come out with us so I don’t know what you’re implying.” And here she was thinking Krista was the jealous one in the relationship. Mal was giving her a run for her money. “Lunch sounds good. There’s some food in the fridge. I can help too! Don’t bother making anything for Mal. He’s a picky eater.” Anything to get them both away from Mal even though Kitty would be no help at all in the kitchen. She’d probably end up slicing off her thumb while cutting up the onions. That would be a whole new situation with a Goddamn vampire in the apartment. She was just about to curl her hand around Bram’s bicep to guide them away from the bedroom when Mal piped up again. Her eyes locked with Mal’s for a brief second, before he turned back to Bram. “Nah he’s doing his residency at the hospital.” She didn’t actually know what that meant. All she knew was he went to work everyday, working long ass hours and one day he’d be a doctor. KRISTA MAY

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ WHEN MAL SIMPLY SAID CHRISTMAS, Krista felt her blood boil. Christmas was not her fricken fault. It was his fault for not bein’ honest with her from the start. And, yeah, it all worked out in the end and stuff, but it would’ve been a lot less headache and anger if he just told her. Plus, he was still actin’ like it was her fault for comin’ anyway, which she was not gonna stand for. “Oh yeah, I was so upset. Remember, Kitty?” She looked at her best friend, brows raising like Kitty would want any part in this. “Then you suggested I should go anyway, ‘cause we were gonna have fun there together, and it turns out Mal was lyin’ about not goin’.” Her eyes went back to Mal, expression accusatory, almost like she was waiting for his excuse. Again.
He went on, asking her the point of giving him a key, and Krista’s eyes narrowed. “Figured you’d text first. And I dunno, you coulda been doin’ anythin’.” She was gonna add, ‘or anyone,’ but that seemed mean, ‘cause he actually wasn’t cheating on her at the Christmas party like she’d thought (at first). Also, he totally had to ask first, especially ‘cause this was Kitty’s place, too! And as much as she wished they liked each other, it was still, like, common courtesy or somethin’ to let her roommate know when someone was comin’ over. This wasn’t just Krista’s place, so Mal couldn’t come and go whenever he wanted.
Mal jumped into Bram and Kitty’s conversation, too, accusing Krista of going out with them. Krista’s face twisted up, but before she could respond, Kitty was on it. “Yeah,” She added, “What are you implyin’?” ‘Cause even if she did go out with them, why would Mal needa know? What a freakin’ double standard. “‘Cause I thought we didn’t haveta tell each other every time we were goin’ out, huh? Or is that only you?” Stickin’ up for herself had worked well at Christmas, so she figured she should keep doin’ it. ‘Specially ‘cause Mal turned out to be doin’ somethin’ nice for her.
Krista glared again when Mal said that Bram ‘wasn’t much help,’ and she slammed her laptop closed, then shoved it off her lap. “Actually, he was.” She grumbled, irritated that Mal was goin’ after Bram, who Krista didn’t know that well but actually really liked. Plus, was he trynna make everyone hate him? First Kitty, now her almost-boyfriend? Did he not wanna be allowed over at all anymore?
Thankfully, Bram (despite his size… and all those muscles) wasn’t really a fighter. Instead of arguin’, he swooped in with a suggestion about lunch, and Krista almost felt bad for him. It wasn’t gonna make nothin’ better━not while Mal was in a mood.
He even made fun of Bram for offerin’ to cook, earning a scowl from Krista. He wasn’t backin’ off, and she was tired of him bein’ mean for no reason. She never actually did anythin’ with anyone else. Mal did. So why was he the one who got to be angry?
Her room was way too small for this. Like, it wasn’t tiny, but it certainly felt that way when they were all inside it and sniping at each other. “Yeah, don’t worry ‘bout Mal,” Krista said as she slid to the edge of her bed, a little closer to Bram again. She wasn’t thinkin’ ‘bout how hot he was this time, not while she was pissed. “He’s gonna go hungry today.” The glint in her eye and the tiny, evil smirk she flashed him made it obvious what she was referring to. If he was gonna be an asshole, she wasn’t gonna reward that behaviour.
Krista pushed off her bed the moment he started makin’ fun of Bram’s work at the hospital━what, just ‘cause he wasn’t the same thing Mal was, he got to tease ‘im for it? No freakin’ way. “Surprised you ain’t crossed paths. Maybe you’re too busy focusin’ on nobody but yourself.” The last part was a grumble as she walked up to Mal, narrowing her eyes again ‘fore she turned her back to him, as though her tiny body could shield Kitty and Bram. “You guys have lunch. Don’t worry ‘bout us.” She smiled, “I’ll pick at leftovers if there are any.” Krista didn’t have the best eating habits, and they didn’t need to change if her boyfriend’s presence was gonna make a scene. She also didn’t think she could kick him out after this. Also, she wasn’t plannin’ to let him leave before she gave him crap for all this.

His career-ending injury had shattered his confidence like it was just another bone in his body, but Bram never would’ve said he had an over-abundance of it in the first place. He’d never been one of those guys who had to prove himself on the ice. They were usually the smallest guys on the team, the ones who thought they had something to prove so they did it by using every underhanded tactic possible. They were the guys he pulled out of parties by the scruff of their necks like a mama cat pulling back a wayward kitten.
Krista’s boyfriend definitely had decades on him – too many on Krista too, if he was as old as he looked. Pounds of attitude on him too. Bram dropped his hand after a moment, there was no point in waiting for him to find the manners both Kitty and Krista were implying he didn’t have at the best of times. Feeling awkward, Bram tucked the waistband of his towel tighter around his waist. It wasn’t like he could shrink himself to melt into the background, but when there was an argument going on between two people in a relationship right in front of him, he almost wished like he could.
Since he’d started hanging around with Kitty he’d heard about some of the shit that happened between Krista and her boyfriend. Him showing up unexpectedly at the Christmas party at the hotel had been one of those things. He’d missed out on it thanks to work, but like, if he had done he wouldn’t have been an ass about it the way this guy was. Bram shot a sheepish look in Kitty’s direction. This definitely didn’t feel like a conversation either one of them shoulda been a part of, but Krista was involving Kitty at the very least and she was defending him.
Heat burned his way up his chest and into his cheeks as Mal started dragging him back into it. Did he puff himself up a little as he was called sasquatch? Well, yeah. His gaze twitched to Kitty as she corrected Mal on just who’d been there last night. It wasn’t like the three of them hadn’t gone there before. ”It was just drinks,” he muttered defensively. ”Just me and Kitty getting drinks.” As though that was all it’d been. Bram rubbed at the back of his neck. Unlike some nights he remembered half of it at least. The shots oozing sickly sweet down his throat, working up a sweat on the dance floor. Maybe if it wasn’t for the homework he’d been helping Krista with when her boyfriend showed up, she would’ve been there with them.
Glaring at Mal, Bram wondered whether he should just ask the guy to go. It wasn’t his apartment and he’d probably be overstepping, but he was getting tired of the shots being thrown his way. ”What can I say, I’m a keeper,” he said dryly. His lips twitched as both Krista and Kitty made it clear that Mal wasn’t getting any lunch today – or anything else from the way Krista was talking. ”Just food for the three of us then. Don’t worry, we’ll save you a plate,” he promised Krista, enjoying the way Mal bristled beside him. He took a step back towards the door, slipping an arm around Kitty’s shoulders. ”I’m going into ortho. I’m mostly working down in the ER at the moment. I guess if things keep going the way they are, I might see you there at some point.” When he mouthed off to the wrong guy and had to have his nose realigned and some teeth reimplanted. Guys like that always got brought down to size eventually.
If he laid a finger on Krista, there was a chance he’d be sending Mal there himself. Bram cast a look back in her direction as he moved into the hallway, drawing Kitty with him. ”We’ll be out in the kitchen if you need us, OK?” he said to Krista, ignoring the curse that slipped out of Mal. Bram let his arm slip from around Kitty’s shoulders to drag his hand over his face as soon as they were out of earshot. ”What the Hell is that guy’s problem?” he asked Kitty. Krista was sweet and friendly, the sort of girl who could’ve had her pick of any guy on campus, and yet somehow she’d ended up involved with that asshole. It was a shame.

The cells they kept the experiments in weren’t palatial, but they could usually squeeze a couple in at a time. If the giant just happened to find himself there, it’d just be him all on his lonesome. Mal reckoned he could take him. A little compulsion and they were usually following him like the rats after the sodding Pied Piper. Maybe that was what he’d turn him into. There were probably wererats out there, there were plenty of other flavours of shifter after all. Leaving him scrabbling round in the gutter, whiskers twitching, just waiting for someone to put some poison out to get rid of him. Krista and Kitty might sulk about it for a while, but neither one of them would be able to prove he’d had a hand in it.
If he’d had his way Krista never would’ve found out just how far he’d ended up in bed with Pierre and Lena again. She knew he’d made a deal to see her safe, that was enough. Only she hadn’t been able to leave it alone at Christmas. Get all dressed up, go to some rich twat’s party, celebrate. It was never gonna go that way with the two of them. To stop Krista screaming the place down he’d had to tell her more than he’d intended to and just look at her now, about to blab it to her bestie (if she hadn’t already) and tall, buff and brainless here. ”We talked about that, didn’t we?” he muttered to Krista through gritted teeth.
He squared his shoulders as Krista tried to goad him about what he could’ve been walking in to. Mal’s upper lip curled into a sour smile, his head tilting slightly. ”I thought we were beyond that. Although I guess only one of us has to give the other warnin’, eh?” Why bother putting out boundaries when Krista was just gonna go stomping over them whenever she felt like it. Digging through your boyfriend’s phone? Trying to ruin his life along with a former hook up’s, just because she couldn’t hear him when he’d said that was all well in the past.
Krista probably wasn’t smart enough to set him up to fail, but it felt a little like she’d manoeuvred him into this little blow up. Getting some half naked bloke in her room at just the moment he decided to turn up? There weren’t coincidences big enough for that. Going to the club with him had probably been the first move – unsuccessful because he hadn’t come crawling for a little dinner and fun last night. He scoffed as Kitty tried to defend her, saying she hadn’t been out with them The sound broke off with a snicker as Bram tried to join in, his chest puffing out like a pigeon. ”Just sayin’ that hypocrisy’s not on. Oi.” Narrowing his eyes at Krista, Mal lifted a finger to ward her off. ”We don’t, but you remember that goes both ways love.” She’d never back off if the shoe was on the other foot. If she knew he’d gone to the club without her, she’d probably be over there, clawing his eyes out in five minutes flat.
”Keep tellin’ yourself that son,” Mal snorted. His smile was back, more sour than ever at Kitty and her sasquatch sized hints. He had all he needed to eat right here, and as soon as the two of them were out of the room he’d be able to talk Krista around to letting him have a little nibble. She was scowling at him for the minute, but he’d turn that around soon enough. Narrowing his eyes at her, Mal made a dubious little sound in his throat.
Bram slipped his arm around Kitty’s shoulders as though he had to make it obvious just who he had those mitts all over. Med student would’ve been his actual first bet, nurses usually read the room better. A bone breaker, that explains it,” Mal snickered. ”We’ll see mate. I’m not usually down in the trenches.” Only when he wanted a little extra snack or the ham fisted idiots in the ER couldn’t get a line in. Mal took a half step towards Krista, his mouth settling back into a thin line. ”Cause I’ve never done anythin’ for you love.” You know, like saving her life and all.
”I’d cover up if I was you,” Mal shot after Bram as he guided Kitty out into the hall. ”Looks like a recipe for some nasty burns if you ain’t careful.” He gave the two of them a little finger wave as he shut the door behind the two of them. Leaning back against it, Mal pouted at Krista. Her hearing wasn’t sharp enough to catch the sasquatch’s comment as he moved off towards the kitchen. She wouldn’t accept that his problem all stemmed from hers anyway. Only one of them was usually insanely jealous, and that wasn’t him. ”Sorry love,” he puffed. ”You can’t blame me for gettin’ a little upset at the thought of you with another bloke when I care about ya like I do. C’mere” Opening his arms, he tried to draw her in. He wasn’t mad enough to use the L word. If he did, she might’ve melted faster, but that was definitely only gonna cause a million more problems down the line.

Kitty’s gaze shot towards Krista as her friend was looking to her for support. Surely Krista knew better than to involve Kitty? It wasn’t like she could be completely impartial on the situation either. It was sad that her best friend couldn’t come to her for any kind of relationship advice because Kitty’s response would be to dump the crumpet eating asshole. So, Mal lied to her? Kitty wasn’t even shocked. “Sound about right.” She muttered. There was obvious something Krista was hiding from Kitty about Mal. Jealousy hung in the air between the pair of them, radiating from Mal more than Krista for a change. It was embarrassing for Mal that the three of them had to stand there and explain it was just her and Bram who went for drinks. Like his fragile ego couldn’t bear the thought of Krista actually having fun without him, especially with another man present. What the fuck did he think had happened? They were taking it in turns to kiss Bram? “Tell you what. Next time me and Bram go out for drinks I’ll be sure to text you.” She flashed Mal a sharp smile. While she wasn’t strong enough to take him down in a fight one nip from her and it was game over for him. But as much as she hated Mal she loved Krista more, which meant she had to keep her teeth retracted for now. Thankfully Bram was there to diffuse the situation. His calm and collective manner brought a genuine smile to Kitty’s face. Totally unbothered by Mal and his snarky comments, which was kind of attractive. A man who didn’t feel the need to prove himself. As they started to walk away from Krista and Mal she heard the comment slip out of Mal’s mouth, “You’re just upset ‘cause you don’t look this good topless.” She quickly shot back seconds before the door closed. She listened carefully to the voices coming from behind the door, hearing Mal say sorry for his behaviour, even going as far as saying he cares about Krista. Kitty didn’t want to listen to Krista accept his apology so she turned her attention to Bram. “He’s an asshole. I’ll tell you about it later when they’re not here.” Without Mal’s ear pressed up against the door listening to Kitty talk shit about him. KRISTA MAY - end!
