Blood was thicker than water. Raik and Remzi were evidence of that. If someone else had done half the shit Remzi had done to Raik they would have been cut out a long time ago. But he could cut his best friend out of his life, even if he had drained his first love and was one of the reasons he was killed. Raik knew Remzi was sorry about it though. It was all water under the bridge now. They were back to how they were before. Remzi sat in the same spot Ayla had sat plenty of times before. On the same pull out couch they fell asleep on holding one another with their limbs wrapped around each other. Raik drew her as close as possible to protect her from whatever nightmares were plaguing her mind. He didn’t mention this to Remzi because they’d fall down some rabbit hole together where Remzi would tease Raik about having a crush on Ayla until Raik would snap at him for being childish. Nonsense. He was just trying to be nice to her since Remzi was failing to do that. It was far from the truth as well. He didn’t just have a crush on her. He was falling in love with her. He’d found himself on this slippery slope, doing absolutely nothing to help himself. Inviting her into his bed, taking her out for fancy cocktails at Christmas, dancing with her at Halloween. None of this was helping, but he couldn’t fucking stop himself. He was addicted to the way she made him feel. The warmth she brought whenever she entered a room or her eyes lightening up whenever he suggested they watched a Turkish romcom movie together. Everything she did was perfect. The way she moved, the way she spoke, the way she laughed at his awful jokes. Fuck, the woman had him in a chokehold but he was refusing to break free, even if ultimately it would end in his own heartbreak. She was worth every single tear he was going to shed. Thankfully their conversation didn’t drift towards Ayla for the whole evening. As promised he spoke to Remzi a while ago about Ayla, but other than that the topic died. The television flickered in front of them as they watched some budget Turkish action movie, in fits of laughter at the awful stunt doubles and CGI. The laughter was mainly sparked by the cigarette they were sharing. Remzi suggested they stay in and smoke all evening. Raik held back his questions about where Ayla was. Instead he sent her a message to check she was okay, to which she said she was working until very late. Their conversation started trial off towards business ideas. According to Remzi the town was missing a kebab shop. A Turkish one to be precise. “I don’t know man. The only place that’s open until super late is that vampire bar and I don’t think vampires are gonna want to order a doner meat kebab at 5am.” He handed the cigarette over to Remzi, blowing the smoke up towards the ceiling, “Do I even wanna know where you’ve got this money from to start a business? Are you selling nudes online?” He asked with a grin on his face. He’d heard about those sorts of websites, of course. The sound of the doorbell rang through the apartment, causing Raik to jump. He sighed as he hauled himself to his feet, dragged his heavy body through the living room and out his apartment door. He lifted the receiver up, “Yo.” He leaned against the wall, steadying his body as the voice come through the phone. “We’re from ICE. Can you buzz us up please. We need to talk to you about something.” Raik felt the colour drain from his face. “Er… one minute.” He slammed the phone back down, rushing into the living room. “Siktir. It’s immigration officers… have you done something? Siktir. Do I need my passport?” He opened every single window in the living room, desperately trying get rid of the smell. “Don’t fuckin’ move. I’ll speak to them.” Raik rushed back towards the front door, picking the phone up and buzzing the cops upstairs. Another knock came at the door. Raki opened the door a fraction, “How can I help you?” He tried to give the cops a wide smile. “We're looking for Ayla Kiraz.” Raik’s throat closed up as he briefly looked at Remzi who was hiding behind the door, “We’ve been advised she has been working in America illegally. We have been to her place of residence, but she isn’t there. Do you know where she’ll be?” Despite the swirling feeling in his stomach and the fact he felt like he was going to pass out Raik kept his shit together. “Working? No way. She ain’t working. I believe she’s out of town at the moment, visiting some friends, but that’s all I know.” REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ REMZI LIKED HANGING OUT WITH RAIK. RAIK WAS probably the only person that Remzi could consistently hang out with without hating. After a while, even Lawrence got irritating, but not Raik. He was happy they’d remained close even after all the shit they’d been through (like Raik abandoning him to go play GI Joe), and Remzi hoped that wouldn’t change━even if he was an asshole sometimes.
And because they were best friends (and Raik was the only person Remzi could trust), Remzi was gonna let Raik in on his little business idea. His fuckin’ dope business idea. Doner. In Mystic Falls. All the white people were gonna love it.
Plus, it was an easy way to clean up the money he was getting from Manny, and he could sell more product out the back. Win-win.
It’d give Raik something to do, too, since he was just… like, living above Campbell’s bar and being boring.
“You don’t know that, man.” Remzi leaned back on Raik’s couch after taking the smoke from him, inhaling a few puffs. “We could sell ‘em with, like… blood infusions or some shit.” He snorted. He’d taken a few of the p*lls Manny had supplied him with already, so he was already feeling a buzz. “But the upstairs bar’s open, too. Lots of drunk people are gonna want somethin’. How many times have you come home plastered and wished you could order somethin’ greasy?” Remzi wasn’t sure how often Raik really did that kinda thing, but Remzi knew the answer of most of the college kids in the area (and the young adults who still went out): always. “S’an un-tapped market, man.”
Raik’s buzzer went off, and Remzi laughed as his brother jumped. He loved getting Raik high━it was Remzi’s best way of bonding.
He came back freaking out, though, and Remzi was reminded of the reason they didn’t do this all the time. Raik was so fuckin’ paranoid. “Chill, Abi. Why would you need your passport? They… wait, immigration?” What the fuck would immigration want with them? They were both American citizens.
But cops were cops, and Remzi stamped out the joint on the ashtray. It was legal in Virginia, but they didn’t need an excuse to come in. Ignoring Raik’s instruction, Remzi stood and, in a blur, he was behind the door.
Ayla? Shit, Remzi forgot about her. That made a lot more fuckin’ sense. He met Raik’s eye as he glanced over, then went back to listening. They went to Hannya’s place? Shit. Remzi was so fuckin’ glad he wasn’t home.
Remzi was pretty surprised Raik managed to lie to the cops━even if he looked super fuckin’ nervous. He held it together, though, and after a little while of questioning, they left.
Remzi walked out from behind the door, but he waited to talk for a few moments, listening to hear that the ICE dudes were actually walking away. Once they were gone, his ice-blue eyes flicked to Raik’s. “The fuck?” He puffed, “Who th’fuck told ICE, man? You think they’ve been keepin’ tabs on her?” He asked, and, like it wasn’t a big problem, flopped back onto the couch to light up again. “Whatever, she’ll be fine. Sure they won’t find her… or she’ll find a way outta it.” He chuckled lightly to himself, taking a few puffs before reaching out to hand it off to Raik. Maybe somebody should warn her about it. But… meh, whatever, somebody would. Probably.

The more Remzi went on about his fuckin’ dope business idea the more Raik’s eyebrows drew together. Opening some kind of doner kebab house in the middle of the city was a good idea, but in the middle of a tiny ass town full of dead people? Not so much. But Remzi was convinced they’d be rolling in the dollars. Owning his own business was something that appealed to Raik, but owning one with Remzi? Not as appealing. Remzi could barely tie his shoelaces, never mind running a business. “I ain’t selling those blood bags to vampires after hours.” He wanted no part in feeding vampires. “Well… yeah I guess.” He said with a shrug. There had been a few times he’d stumbled home absolutely starving and being forced to have some toast. “Let’s talk when we're sober ‘cause right now I’d struggle to write my own name.” Then he could press Remzi more about where he’d gone money from to start a business, but knowing his brother he’d probably expect Raik to put in a hundred percent. He’d forgotten how easily paranoid he could become when smoking. In his mind for a second he was convinced the ICE officers were there to collect him and Remzi and take them back to Turkey. “I don’t know bro. They might see the colour of my skin and start askin’ for it.” If he was in the right frame of mind Raik would be able to put his hands on his passport within seconds. With a sinking feeling in his gut, he realised he would have to face the officers without it. While they were doing nothing legally wrong by smoking he didn’t want to give the cops a reason to come inside. Plus it could end badly with Remzi’s record or even worse his brother could take a chunk out of the two officers. Thankfully Remzi didn’t emerge from behind the door, leaving Raik to deal with them. They asked questions about Ayla. Did he know her? Does he know if she is working? Did he have a contact number for there? He lied through his teeth, telling them she wasn’t working. He didn’t have a number for her either. If the officers took his phone they’d see an exchange of messages with Ayla every single day. Thousands of texts between the pair, starting with a good morning text from one side and always signing off with a goodnight text before someone went to bed. It was almost as if they were the ones set to get married. Raik closed the door, pressing his ear against the door, listening to ICE officers walk away. Once he was certain they were gone he exhaled harshly, as though he had been holding his breath the entire time. “I don’t know… there’s no record of her workin’ at the casino anyway. All under the table shit.” He had to explain to Ayla that what Pierre was doing was technically illegal, but it was fine. If anyone was going to get in trouble it would be Pierre. She had nothing to worry about. He followed Remzi back into the living room, “What do you mean whatever? What if they find her? She’ll be deported! Banned from the US forever.” He hesitated for a moment before taking the smoke, “We gotta do something. We can head over to the casino. She’s workin’ there tonight.” He placed the smoke in his mouth, taking a puff. Although running over to see Ayla while he was flying high with the birds probably wasn’t a good idea. REMZI DURMAZ

━ like sisyphus pushing that rock uphill ━ BANNED FROM THE U.S. FOREVER DIDN’T sound that bad. Remzi considered it━what his life would be like if Ayla was finally gone━and decided he definitely wasn’t gonna step in. His first stop would be to visit Leah, and maybe they’d pop celebratory drinks. He kinda figured all would be forgiven if Ayla was gone, but that was only ‘cause he was forgetting that he was mad at her ‘bout Hannya. ‘Bout breaking her promise, actually, then turning it all on Remzi and pretending like he was the one who fucked up.
“Yeah... and?” Remzi scoffed, raising his brows at his brother. “She’ll be happier. And I won’t haveta marry some random bitch I don’t know.” One his mom set him up with.
Remzi leaned into the couch after passing the smoke back to Raik, one arm slung lazily over the couch’s back. He wasn’t going anywhere. “We?” Remzi snorted, “Nah, dawg. Ain’t goin’ nowhere. Like I said, she’ll be fine.” He grinned lazily, totally content with sinking into Raik’s couch for the rest of the night.
Suddenly, an idea occurred to him, and he sat up straight, eyes widening. “Wait… you don’t think Anne will make me go to Turkey if Ayla gets sent home, right? ‘Cause Baba said some shit ‘bout me not fuckin’ this up or I’ll haveta serve in the military or whatever.” And, like, no offence to Raik or anything, but he’d rather fucking die than do that.

Why the hell did Raik think Remzi was going to help him? Course he wouldn’t. He wanted Ayla to be deported so he could run off into the sunshine with his psycho reaper girlfriend. But Raik couldn’t sit back and do nothing. The thought of Ayla being deported and never seeing her again shattered his heart. “Hey! She ain’t no random bitch, okay?” He had to be careful. Reel it in a bit before Remzi started accusing Raik of having some stupid crush on Ayla, again. Now it was more than a crush though. He thought about Ayla every single day and couldn’t imagine his life without her in it. There was a tiny bit of truth in Remzi’s comment though. While he was sure Ayla wouldn’t be happy to be deported back to Turkey, she’d be happy about not having to marry Remzi. He’d spent enough time with her by now to realise she wasn’t keen to walk down the aisle, but she had no choice. It was either to marry Remzi or bring shame on her family by rejecting the man they’d found for her. There were thousands of men they could have chosen from, but they decided Remzi was the best option. Wild. Remzi had settled back into the couch, ready to melt into it for another few hours but Raik couldn’t settle. His heart was now racing. Remzi could probably hear it thudding deep inside his chest. The stress levels were peaking. Then his brother quickly bolted upright, looking over at Raik. A sigh rolled out of Raik. He could lie through his teeth to Remzi, telling him their mom would certainly send him over to Turkey, but then he realised he didn’t want Remzi to come with him to see Ayla. He wanted to be alone with her. “Anne ain’t gonna send you to Turkey. She’ll be terrified you’re gonna die… which is fuckin’ ironic.” Raik thought Remzi wouldn’t last five minutes on the battlefield, especially as a human. Raik grabbed his coat and stomped out of the living room, “I’ll go and speak to Ayla. Make sure you keep that window open in there ‘cause I don’t want this place smelling like a trap house.” He pulled the front door open, slamming it shut behind him. Soon as he stepped outside he let out another long sigh before walking towards the casino. REMZI DURMAZ - end!
