No one needed to own a jaguar. They were wild animals who weren’t to be kept in captivity, especially at someone’s house. Manny didn’t see that though. He saw this animal as an extra level of protection to his house. There was no space for an animal in his old apartment, but in his new house he’d purchased outside of Mystic Falls there was plenty of room. If any of his enemies managed to somehow get past the security features he already had in place then they’d be met with a jaguar. No one would make it out alive. Most people would buy a dog for this shit, but not Manny. He needed an animal that would tear someone’s face off. Soon word would get out that Manny had a jaguar protecting the house. The smart ones would avoid his place like the plague. The idiots would jump the fence and try their luck. Maybe he could eventually sleep with both eyes closed. Unlikely. Enemies still out there lurking in the shadows. Everything seemed to be going okay at the ice cream parlour too bar the annoying Australian girl and the simple looking American guy who asked a lot of questions. The girl had started to take an interest in their orders, asking what was in the boxes him and Zach were delivering. Sadly he couldn’t fire her for that, otherwise it would look too suspicious. He’s tried to scare her off by glaring at her, giving her short answers but she was like a dog with a fucking bone. He left Zach to deal with the idiot children. Manny didn’t deal with the jaguar. He hired a group of people to do that. They were to tend to the animal everyday in its modest size cage. They were paid generous to do that and keep their fucking mouths shut about him owning some illegal animal. He could talk himself most of the crimes he was accused of but might struggle with this one, considering the evidence was sitting in his home. He grabbed a bottle of vodka out of the cupboard in the kitchen. He cracked the lid open, flicking it off and took a large gulp. It wasn’t even 7am. He grimaced slightly as it ran down his throat. He placed the bottle down on the side, ready to leave the kitchen when he heard a bang from behind. Manny spun round, ripping a knife out of his jogger pockets. “Who the fuck are you?” He pointed the blade at her. He was more concerned that she was completely naked. “Where the fuck are your clothes?” He snapped, taking a small step towards the woman, trying to keep his eyes from falling to his body. ━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ RUBY SILENTLY CURSED IN SPANISH OVER AND over as they hauled her away in the cage. She’d fought valiantly, of course, but she couldn’t stop them when they’d come as a big group. One of those collars to choke around her neck and keep her down, a fucking tranquillizer dart, everything. They’d used everything to take her down, and now Ruby was in a cage. Again. Literally this time.
She didn’t know if the asshole who’d “adopted” her like a fucking pet was behind the capture or someone else, but she hated all of them equally. Maybe she hated him the most.
She’d thought it was a great fucking plan. If she left Mystic Falls in another form, then no one would be able to track her. She didn’t know where she’d go, but she’d get out of there.
Except fucking jaguars weren’t native to Virginia, and even if she was great at stalking quietly through the greenery, she was still fucking covered in spots.
Every time she was let out of her cage to traipse around the home━was she supposed to be a fucking guard dog?━Ruby nearly took off the head of her ‘caregivers.’ They left her as quickly as possible, and she decided that if she was gonna get outta here, she had to be smart.
They came to feed her in the mornings, which allowed the “owner” (who everyone just called ‘boss’) to come home whenever he wanted. She tracked his schedule, realizing it’d be easiest to leave either before she was fed or between being fed and the ‘boss’ returning home. She opted for as early as possible.
But in the days she was left as his “pet,” she heard a few interesting things about this guy. If he ever spoke Spanish, his accent was definitely Mexican, the same as hers━and he was clearly a dr*g dealer. A good one, too, if the size of his house was anything to go by.
Ruby wasn’t sure what she wanted from him, but she was definitely collecting more information before she left. Either her boss in Mexico would trade the intel in exchange for her return, or she’d have something over someone in Mystic Falls.
Shortly after the sun rose, Ruby shifted back, taking a moment to get used to the feeling of a human body again. She rolled her shoulders and sighed heavily, eyes flicking over the lock. It was easy to get out of when she had opposable thumbs, and the silver piece slid open without much effort, allowing her to crawl out.
She wasn’t comfortable naked, but she was alone, and she wanted to move quickly. Her dark eyes slid over the surfaces in the room, surveying them all. No pictures. No keepsakes. No family. At least, none that he wanted to remember. She appreciated that.
Ruby slinked through the house, trying to find a security room of some sort━anything that would tell her where the cameras were pointed and if he had any guys outside. Maybe it was better to get the door open and walk out as the jaguar, then turn back as soon as possible━but either she’d have to try to get to the motel (as the jaguar) undetected, or run through town naked. Either option was risky.
She hadn’t heard the door, but she’d heard the cupboard creak in the next room, the footsteps leading away from her. She’d picked up a thick book, and while she’d assumed it would be hollowed out on the inside, she didn’t get a chance to check. Ruby froze when she heard the bottle being set down, and the book slipped sideways out of her hand, landing on the floor with a thud before she could catch it. Fuck.
He was in the room in seconds, and Ruby’s fingers curled towards her wrist, the pads of them sliding over the bare skin. Shit━she didn’t have a blade to counter him with━she didn’t have anything. Ruby was stark fucking naked and being threatened by a cartel boss with a knife in his own fucking home. She slapped an arm over her chest and forced herself to not retreat. Ruby took a step towards him, her eyes narrowing. “Ain’t my choice. Was forced in ‘ere.” She hissed, an accent coating her words that she was sure wouldn’t be totally unfamiliar to him. Those slits of deep brown suddenly glowed blue, dark, jaguar-like spots covering her face like a shadow for a second before they faded. He wouldn’t be totally surprised, would he? She’d seen his features shift into someone else in a matter of seconds. Ruby did that, too, just with a big cat’s skin instead. “Gimme a bata or somethin.” She nearly hissed, nodding in the direction of what she thought was the bathroom, though she didn’t take her eyes off him.

Being in a constant state of paranoia could be exhausting for Manny. For those moments he was alone his thoughts would slow down, but only a fraction and only for a short space of time. This was the life he had made for himself though. He could have taken the path Ricky did, although he was sure his brother didn’t have many moments of calmness either. Too busy trying to save Manny. He was too late though. That ship had sailed many many years ago. If only Ricky had taken action sooner, although it was unlikely it would have made an impact. Someone needed to take over their family business. It should have been the oldest, but he grew up into a snake. They were born to be criminals. It was shocking to see Ricky take the opposite road, away from a life of crime. Most people would run the opposite way if a knife was being pointed in their direction, but this woman just stood there. In fact, she took a fucking step towards Manny. Clearly just as unhinged as him, ready to fight with absolutely no weapons at all. He glanced down at the book she dropped on the floor. His first thought was that she was trying to rob him, but he realised quickly that made zero sense. Why would a woman break into his house naked to rob him? Perhaps she’d been sent by his enemies to try and seduce him for information, which would never work. No, impossible. She wasn’t putting the moves on him, at all. Suspicion peaked even higher when he heard his accent, telling him she had been forced there. “By who?” It sure as hell wasn’t him. He didn’t need to force naked ladies into his house, although the police reports may say something different thanks to Hannya. Bitch. But then the woman’s glowed blue and spots appeared on her face before fading away again. “Oh fuck. You tellin’ I bought some goddamn werecreature?” Her animal form wasn't cheap either. Looks like some men were about to lose their tongues for selling Manny a fake jaguar. “Bien.” He sighed heavily as he slowly walked towards the bathroom, the knife still pointed at her. “Stay there. I have questions.” He was in the bathroom for less than a second before emerging and throwing the robe at her. The knife was sligthly lowered, “Who are you? I thought I bought a fuckin’ jaguar from Africa not some chick from México.” That was what he was told when the men brought the jaguar to his house. Fuck, blood was going to be shed. “Do you want a drink or somethin’? I have vodka, whiskey, rum.” He quickly gesutured towards the drinks trolley behind them with his knife. ━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ RUBY DIDN’T BOTHER ANSWERING THE FIRST OF his few questions, especially as they were somewhat rhetorical. Yes, obviously he bought a werecreature. She thought she was dealing with a big-time guy here, not someone who would sputter around in surprise. To be fair, though, he hadn’t expected her, but Ruby wasn’t in the business of fairness or giving anyone the benefit of the doubt. Neither was he.
Thankfully, he walked to the bathroom to get her a robe, and Ruby only puffed out a breath as he ordered her not to move. Where the hell would she go, anyway? She was completely naked and his house was probably surrounded.
Ruby caught the robe, and though every fibre of her being begged her to shield her body from him while she put it on, she couldn’t. Turning your back on a guy holding a knife was a stupid fucking idea.
She shoved her arms in and tied it around her waist, then finally allowed a little bit of anxiousness to bleed out in a breath. It wasn’t all gone, but she was ten times more comfortable (even with a knife pointed at her) when her body wasn’t on display.
“That was your first mistake.” Ruby scoffed, “Leopards are from Africa, pendejo, not jaguars. You bought a little piece of home, eh?” Her lips twisted into a mocking grin, though it slowly died as he offered her a drink. Well, that was friendly, especially for someone who was about to skin her for stepping foot inside his home. Maybe it was a trap, but she couldn’t see why it would be. He already had the upper hand. “Whatever you’re havin’.” Ruby mumbled, shifting a step to the side to watch his hands move, ensuring he didn’t slip something in her drink. She didn’t get much closer, only gave herself a better angle.
“I heard you’re havin’ a problem.” Ruby said, eyes lifting to his face slowly. “I work for Andrés.” She added, knowing the first name alone held enough weight━especially for someone involved in trade. Andrés was just about the largest man in Mexico now, responsible for eighty percent of what went in and out. He didn’t only deal in people, either. “Well, I did. There’s a problem with my passport, can’t get back over the border.” But she was skilled in the kind of work they did, and she could be useful to him. Especially if he was having a personnel issue. “Y’know I can keep my mouth shut.” Who she worked for was proof of that, “But if you wanna know who your soplón is, I can find out.”

Manny was a man so of course it was difficult not to let his eyes wander down as she took the robe from him. There was an attractive naked woman literally standing in front of him, showing him everything. But he wasn’t some kid with raging hormones, so he kept his eyes glued to her face. He wasn’t wholly convinced this woman hadn’t roamed into his apartment by free will and was here to kill him. When you had a list of enemies as long Manny did you could never relax. His shoulders were constantly hunched up slightly and tense. Manny didn’t ask many questions about the origin of the jaguar when it was dropped off at his house because he didn’t give a fuck where it had been shipped from. Possibly a mistake on his half. “I’ll bear that in mind for next time.” He muttered before stepping back a fraction towards where his bottle of vodka was sitting. He poured her a short glass of vodka, his gaze flicking between the glass and the woman the entire time. He pushed it across the counter to her before pouring his own. He went to knock back the drink until she spoke. He paused, lowering the glass from his lips. So, she had also been eavesdropping on his conversations this entire time. He should have driven the knife through her neck, but then she mentioned who she worked for. “You work for Andrés?” He narrowed his eyes at her, doubting her although it would have been brave for her to throw around such comments. One phone call could have her rumbled and possibly killed. “Andrés can’t sort your passport?” He was the type of man who could get his hand on a fake passport within five minutes. “And what do you want in return?” This woman didn’t seem like the type of person who did something out the kindness of her own heart. ━ an ache for home; a shelter against storms ━ WELL, HE MIGHT’VE BEEN JUST LIKE HER━THE lowest of the low━but he didn’t spike her drink. Which was promising, she supposed. But just ‘cause he’d offered her a robe and a drink didn’t mean she had some illusions about who he was. Ruby had been in the game long enough to know you couldn’t trust anyone━not even your own blood.
This wasn’t the type of man you threatened, though. Regardless of his other ability, he was dangerous. She wouldn't get anywhere with demands━only offerings.
Ruby moved forward quickly, grabbed her glass, then stepped back again like she was waiting for him to grab her. A safe distance was always better, especially when he had a weapon on him. Normally, Ruby always did, too, but normally she wasn’t stuck in her jaguar form for days on end.
It was a risk mentioning what she knew, but he’d likely put it together himself and not let her walk out of here alive. Ruby nodded firmly when he asked again, though she assumed it was rhetorical. She downed the glass in one shot.
“More complicated than that.” Was her only explanation. Too much trouble and he wouldn’t want her. “A position.” She said simply, lifting her chin as she watched him. “If I find whoever snitched, you’ll know I can do my job. I wanna work while I’m here, not sit on my ass.” The edges of her lips lifted in what should’ve been a smile, but it looked twisted, like she didn’t know what smiles were supposed to be like. “And you’ll know I know howta get the job done. Unlike all ‘em gringos that work for ya.” Couldn’t trust ‘em to do it right━not like her.
And if he was good with that━if he accepted her terms━then maybe he’d finally let her leave… and give her some clothes to borrow. Her life was in his hands now, unfortunately, which was a situation Ruby hated to be in.
