Lawrence’s evening was going from bad to worse and he was struggling to cope with the overwhelming feeling of despair. He’d dashed over to Penny’s apartment, letting his heart lead the way, only to find another man in her bed. It crushed him to hear Tobi’s voice yelling from inside, inviting Penny back into bed. It was apparent that everything was one sided with her. He was the one who’d developed feelings, meanwhile she was treating it like a casual hookup. How could have he allowed himself to become so fucking vulnerable with her? She’d effortlessly peeled back those layers of him, finding her way down to the deep core of Lawrence. Despite being naive as fuck sometimes, he knew he wasn’t in love with Penny, but he was experiencing those feelings you get prior to falling for someone. He wanted to spend every minute of every day with her and whenever she wasn’t with him he felt lonely and a little lost. He’d come to hate dragging himself from her bed and leaving. During those moments without her he would look forward to whenever he could next see her again. His life had slowly started to revolve around those coffee dates. A smile on his face whenever he thought about them or her. If he wasn’t thinking about Penny then he was with her. But all of that had come crashing around him. Penny had slipped through his fingers, out of his grasp and now she was gone. Life had introduced him to this amazing woman, but he failed to keep her. It wasn’t clear whether he was the one to fuck it up or whether she just didn’t feel the same way about him. He stood outside of Penny’s apartment building, tears seeping from his eyes no matter how hard he tried to hold them back.. The only place left to go was Teddy’s. He knew he probably wouldn’t receive a warm welcome from Teddy, but he’d nothing left to lose at this point. Lawrence knocked lightly on the door, hoping the noise wouldn’t wake Julian up too. After a minute the door clicked open. “Teddy. I’m so sorry for everything I did and said to you. I don’t expect you to forgive me, but I need you to know I’m sorry..” The tears had started to gather in his eyes again, as he swiftly brushed them away. “Phoebe spoke with our mom and apparently she said all this nice shit about me. Then I went over to Penny’s and there was another man in her bed and I think I’ve fucked everything up with her which isn’t a surprise to anyone because I don’t deserve someone like her.” By now he couldn’t wipe the tears away quick enough, they were falling too fast. Shutting his humanity off wasn’t his decision, it was Hannya’s. The only way he could save his sister was by losing that part of him. But now he was left cleaning up the mess, reeling from his own actions. TEDDY AARONSON

━ i started to dream again ━ ONCE HE’D GOTTEN JULIAN BACK, TEDDY couldn’t believe how he’d lived without his son. Without missing him, or even knowing he was gone. He kept taking nights off work so he could be there to watch Julian sleep and take him to school in the morning, ensuring no one would take him away again. He couldn’t ever let something like this happen again. He had to protect their baby boy, not only because it was his duty as a father, but because it was his one promise to Octavia.
He missed Teddy every day, too, but if Teddy had to keep his son safe, then Lawrence couldn’t be around. He’d help Phoebe in any way he could, but Teddy’s first priority was Julian. He just hoped he could get his friend back sooner rather than later━or maybe he’d settle for just getting him back eventually, because even that wasn’t guaranteed.
At the soft knock on the front door, Teddy glanced at it and frowned, then looked back to Julian, who was sleeping soundly in his room. Teddy quietly closed the door, twisting the knob before pulling it shut, so as to avoid any noise.
He went to the front door, immediately stiffening when he saw Lawrence, though his frown slowly began to soften as he realized that the vampire looked… dishevelled. And very sad.
Apologies immediately began to flow from him, and Teddy felt a little lighter, a little better, but he couldn’t let his guard down completely yet. Apparently, his emotions were back, all because of his mother and Penny, and he’d come here to… expect Teddy to make it all better? His apology was just a preface to what Lawrence really wanted to say, and though Teddy was grateful to have his friend back, and he wouldn’t throw it in his face, it still hurt. “Well… you were pretty awful without your emotions.” Teddy said lightly, then added, “But it wasn’t your fault.”
He surveyed Lawrence for a little longer, wondering if this was another trick, but he wanted nothing more than to finally let his best friend come back home. “How can I be sure you’re really back?” He asked quietly, “What if… this is just a game? My son is inside.” Granted, emotionless Lawrence probably wouldn’t have bothered with this, but Teddy still wanted to be careful.

Amongst all the awful shit he’d done at least Lawrence kind of helped to bring Julian back. There could have been better ways to do it, such as staying with Teddy and actually helping him to find Julian, instead of dropping the information on his doorstep then mocking Teddy about being a terrible dad. There was no truth behind those words though. Teddy was an excellent dad. Lawrence was only trying to drive the hurt a little deeper, to make his best friend feel even worse. Lawrence wanted to feel like he had the upper hand. Lawrence never imagined he’d be in this situation ever again, experiencing the agony of turning his humanity back on. He was adamant he’d never do anything like that again, no matter how dark life got but this was before Phoebe remerged. He’d say he could never have predicted what was going to happen at Halloween, but what happened what pretty fucking predictable. Hannya playing games with Lawrence because she can and using Phoebe as leverage to untether Lawrence from his pesky humanity. This time was different though because not only had he killed people he’d also gone after the people he loved. It was a whole new world of guilt that he’d never felt before. He was hoping that was evident on his face when Teddy opened the door, stopping him from slamming the door shut. Teddy’s words did nothing to ease the pain though. If you looked a little closer it was easy to argue that everything was Lawrence’s fault. He was warned away from Hannya from the outset, but he ignored all the red flags even though there were thousands. “It was my fault. I shouldn’t have ignored you and got involved with Hannya.” It was a classic moment of what’s the worst that could happen There was no blaming Teddy when he wasn’t wholly convinced Lawrence was back. “You know I’m telling the truth about my mom, Phoebe said you helped… and you know how upset I was when I found out about my mom’s death.” It was impossible for him to keep everything switched off when Phoebe dropped the bomb about speaking with their mom, “I’m not here to play games. I just want my best friend back in my life again.” He needed Teddy back in his life, desperately. TEDDY AARONSON

━ i started to dream again ━ DESPITE EVERY FIBRE OF HIS BEING SCREAMING at him to let Lawrence in again━both literally and emotionally━Teddy steeled himself against it. He had to fight, to stay strong. He could not allow anything else to happen to his son, no matter how badly he wanted to believe that his best friend had returned. Vampires were crafty, especially without their emotions, though Teddy wasn’t sure Lawrence would’ve tried so hard for this. Still, he had to be safe.
At least Lawrence admitted it was his fault. Because, well, yes━while Phoebe should not have involved herself, she was only trying to help Lawrence━to separate him from the demon that kept ruling his life. Teddy had tried, too, but he hadn’t put himself in the line of fire. He couldn’t, not when he had Julian to worry about.
“You’re right.” Teddy nodded lightly, his eyes still surveying Lawrence. He did look overcome with grief, with heartache, and Teddy tried to find a lie in it. A little crack that would tell him to stay strong. He didn’t.
Teddy nodded slowly, remembering when Phoebe had come to him for help more than once during Lawrence’s… break from his humanity. Something like that was probably the only thing that could bring him back, so Teddy was inclined to believe it━all signs were pointing in the right direction, and all Teddy had to do was take a risk… just like Lawrence had the first night they’d met.
And, again, what emotionless vampire would try this hard? What humanity-free being would have that sort of feeling in his face, in his eyes? Teddy smiled, his eyes a little misty. “I want you back in my life, too.” He said lightly, then stepped out and wrapped his arms around Lawrence. If he was going to kill Teddy, it would happen now, but at least he wouldn’t get inside.
Teddy gave Lawrence a little squeeze before pulling away, then grinned at his best friend━the one he finally got back━and glanced at the doorway. “Let me get my phone. One minute.” He disappeared back inside, grabbing his phone from the coffee table, then returned with Kitty already on the phone. “Would you be able to allow Lawrence inside, please?” He asked, and, when she did, he thanked her and hung up, then said in a quiet voice, “Julian’s sleeping.” As he led Lawrence into the living room.
“I didn’t change anything in your room.” Teddy added as they reached the couch and he sat down. “Do you want to talk about Penny? Or your mom?” He asked, knowing Lawrence probably wanted to get it off his chest━and that’s what Teddy was there for. It’s what he would always be there for.

Lawrence wasn’t the greatest liar either. It was Phoebe’s job to lie to their parents about how the lamp in the living room smashed or about why they were getting home after curfew. Lawrence would just stand next to her, nodding and occasionally saying yeah. Without his humanity he would have struggled to squeeze any tears out anyway. Teddy didn’t push back though, accepting Lawrence had finally flipped the switch back on after months of carnage. His friend stepped over the threshold, into the danger zone, but Lawrence was no threat to him anymore. He puffed out softly as Teddy opened his arms to embrace Lawrence. He threw his arms around Teddy, holding back the urge to sob uncontrollably. Some part of him was waiting for Teddy to turn on him though. Waiting for that burning sensation to ripple through his body as Teddy drew magic from him, but it never came. They were finally reunited. He waited anxiously as Teddy disappeared back into the apartment to grab his phone. He recognised the girl’s voice coming from the other end of the phone, but couldn’t place it. A few hours ago Lawrence would have been searching all of Mystic Falls for this girl to rip her throat out so he could get inside Teddy’s apartment. “I’ll keep my voice low.” He replied. He was eager to see Julian, wrap his arms around the little kid and tell him he’d missed him. Lawrence followed Teddy into the apartment, taking a seat on the couch. “Appreciate it buddy.” His eyes flickered off towards his room quickly before returning to Teddy, “Um… I’m not ready to talk to my mom. I need some time to… deal with my emotions.” Speaking to his mom too soon would be enough to send him over the edge. Everything was just too raw. “As for Penny. There’s not a lot to say. I was an asshole to her and now she’s moved on and she’s with someone else. I was hoping me and her could… I don’t know… be something.” Now they were just strangers again. It wasn’t like they could be friends. “Shall we just watch some trash TV for a bit?” He broke into a small smile, reaching for the TV remote. Something to distract him from his car crash life.
