Everything was hurting. Even just breathing was causing Lawrence pain. Each inhale felt like someone was sitting on his chest, crushing him. He’d finally snapped after Phoebe told him about their mom. He could have brushed off the fact his sister had made contact with their mom, but then Phoebe started to tell him about what their mom had said, specifically about Lawrence. It was too much for him. The final straw which had broken the camel’s back. The emotions hit him and he was unable to control them any longer. His mind geared towards anger to begin with. Furious with his sister for speaking to their mom without him. He demanded they wake up Teddy and they make contact with their mom immediately. He needed to speak to her, tell her he forgave her for everything and he missed her so fucking damn miss. Lawrence desperately wanted to hear his mom’s voice again, just one last time. It was the closure he’d been longing for since he left Canada. Lawrence rushed out of the apartment, torn between going to Teddy’s or Penny’s. He owed them both an apology, but he decided to head over to Penny’s apartment, knowing she’d still be awake. Teddy was probably curled up in bed. Despite his emotions being all over the place he knew one thing was certain. He no longer wanted to keep things casual between him and Penny. He wanted it to be more than that. It was something he’d known for a while, even before she was kidnapped and he flipped the switch. Right now probably wasn’t the best time to be going over to her apartment to tell her how he felt about her, but he couldn’t hold himself back. The words were itching to get out after being stuck in there for too long. If he left it a few days he’d talk himself out of it. He wished he could rewind back to their reunion in the museum. There were so many things he should have said to her, but wasn’t willing to. He should have hugged her so damn tightly, told her he’d missed her and he was ecstatic to have her back. Instead he rejected her and killed the security guard. Guilt would start to consume him soon for every person he’d mindlessly killed or tried to kill. Echoes of their voices in his mind as they pleaded with him not to do it. So many innocent people were killed because Lawrence felt like it. How the fuck was his mom proud of him? He was a terrible person, who did terrible things to people he cared about. But for now he kept his thoughts locked on Penny, keeping him grounded and calm. As soon as he reached her apartment door doubt crept in. What if she didn’t forgive him? What if she told him she just wanted them to be friends? The rejection would shatter him. Nonetheless, he knocked at her door. There was no backing out. He almost threw up when he heard the door unlock. His face softened as she opened the door and he saw her. No words came out of his mouth though. He just stood there, looking at her, admiring her. Tears started to burn in his eyes, but he blinked them away. All the things he wanted to say to her remained caught in his throat as he realised there weren’t enough words in the English language to express the way he felt about Penny. So, instead of explaining he just stepped forward, his hands cupping her face lightly as he pressed his lips against hers. His hands slipped from her face to around her neck as he kissed her more passionately, drawing her body closely to his. This was just another thing he’d missed about her. Her small frame pressed up against his. Heat would expel from her skin as they’d rolled around together in bed, leaving him desperate for more. Always wanting just another ten minutes with her. Eventually they broke apart, his hands returning to her face, his eyes locked on hers. He brushed his left thumb over her cheek bone. “I’m sorry for everything. I did remember you and I lied when I said I didn’t. My life was so fucking empty after you went missing and I’m sorry I didn’t figure it out sooner. I care about you Penny… a lot.” His voice started to crack as he spoke, but it felt like a weight had lifted off his chest. He’d laid his cards on the table, knowing there was a chance she was about to shred his heart. Now the ball was in Penny’s court. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ AS PENNY GLANCED SIDEWAYS AT TOBI, SPRAWLED naked on her bed, she told herself that it was better this way. Lawrence was getting too close, hanging around her too much, and she could hardly convince herself she didn’t like it anymore. But he didn’t have the humanity to feel anything back, which would make severing ties easier━that was another thing she told herself, too. Even if she could let herself be with someone again, it couldn’t be Lawrence. The man she’d grown to… know was gone.
Tobi was an easy distraction, especially because she knew he didn’t want anything, either━just fun. Sleeping with him made it easier to pretend she wasn’t hurt━a good distraction.
When there was a knock on the door, it dragged her from that distraction, though they were on a small break. They’d been at it all fucking day, and she was beginning to doubt her endless stamina━when the hell was he going to get worn out?
She pulled herself out of bed and tugged something quick on━a loose sweater and pyjama pants━before padding to the door and tugging it open.
What the hell?
Penny frowned, her brows drawing together in confusion as she looked at him, but he didn’t give her time to ask anything. Lawrence pulled her in, kissing her deeper than she’d been kissed in a long time. Immediately, her hands looped around his middle, and she forgot about everything except this. He was back, he had to be, but that didn’t matter right now. Not when he was kissing her like this, holding her against him, making her feel so secure and, more than anything, wanted.
Her hands slipped up to gently hold his wrists as he drew back to cup her face again, and Penny tried to keep her emotions in check as he began speaking. No, professing.
“Lawrence…” She croaked, her eyes becoming glassy as she looked into his, trying to process how she felt, what she could say. He was taking the leap, but she didn’t know if she could do this to him. Yes, she felt something, but was it worth more heartache? And if she did really want him, then why would she let him die because of it?
“I━” She began, but then Tobi yelled out from deep within her apartment, calling her back to bed. Penny’s eyes widened as she looked at Lawrence, suddenly remembering that Tobi was there, silently cursing herself for it. Lawrence got his emotions back, came to her and told her how he felt, and she was going to ruin it because she had no idea he’d do this.
“Why didn’t you call first?” Penny croaked like this was his fault━like the “grand, romantic gesture” wasn’t something she appreciated, when, in reality, she couldn’t express how much it meant to her.

A few hours had passed since he sat down in front of Penny and said sorry for being a piece of shit at the Christmas party. It came out unconsciously, he didn’t even think about it before he spoke. Then he bolted out of the coffee shop, needing to put distance between him and Penny. He’d spent months avoiding Phoebe and Teddy because they were his weakness, but he never did that with Penny even though it was so damn obvious she was another person who was capable of bringing him back. The problem was she wasn’t intentionally trying to reignite something inside of him, so it was easier to ignore her impact on him. But now it was too late. She’d broken through the tough exterior, jolting him back to reality. The temptation to flee Mystic Falls burned in the pit of his stomach. Jump in a car, hit the highway and start a new life in another town. He’d done it once before when he ditched Rosie and moved to New Orleans. How hard would it be to do it again? However Phoebe would hunt him down within a week and beat the shit out of him for abandoning her. But would Penny even look for him? He never looked for her when she was stuck in the train station. He didn’t rush to save her when he spoke with Winter. He just placed it on a list of things to do like it was some mundane task such as washing your car. No wonder her eyes were full of anger when he saw her at Christmas. Asking for forgiveness from Teddy and Penny was different than asking Phoebe. They were siblings so even if his sister was furious with him for everything she’d forgive him one day because they only had one another. Their mom taught them they needed to stick together. So even when she accidentally broke his favourite wooden train and he was convinced he’d never speak to her again they were best friends again the following day. Penny and Teddy owed him nothing though. They could shut the door and tell Lawrence to fuck off. Penny didn’t slam the door shut though. She just stood there, looking confused. Lawrence closed the gap between them before she had a chance to close the door. She didn’t push him off either. Her hands slipped around his waist as he pulled her closer. In the midst of all the shitty feelings there was a glimmer of happiness shining through. Everything was going to be okay. Just say you feel the same.— that’s all he wanted. His eyes searched hers desperately, as if he was going to find an answer in there. But then a male’s voice came from inside the apartment, inviting Penny back into bed. The warlock with the shit jacket. Lawrence recognised the voice. Suddenly that glimmer of happiness was extinguished. Gone. His hands dropped from her face. Her heart dropped even deeper, all the way down to the floor. The irrational part of him wanted to run inside the apartment and kill the asshole in Penny’s bed. “I… I didn’t expect you to be with someone else… I thought me and you…” They weren’t a thing, but he thought they were on their way to becoming something. “I’m sorry. I’ve misunderstood the whole situation.” It felt like someone had just swung a hammer into his chest, crushing his heart. “You helped me to turn my emotions back on, so thank you. I know you didn’t mean to but just being with you helped me feel something.” But what the fuck was he going to do now? PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY’S HEART BROKE AS SHE WATCHED Lawrence’s face fall, but she tried to convince herself it was for the best. His hands dropped from where they’d been cradling her face, and Penny immediately missed their warmth━how his skin felt against hers. How loving the gesture was. How it made her feel.
She wanted to grasp at his shirt and keep him close, keep him in her arms, but he was gone before she could convince herself to. This was bad. Lawrence was in danger just from the way she felt about him.
He thought they were…
Penny did, too. Until she realized his emotions were gone and he no longer cared about her. “No,” Penny croaked, her hand flexing as it fell away from him, but it was just about all she could manage. “You didn’t…” She trailed off. God, she was five hundred fucking years old━why did the baby vampire have her at a loss for words?
“I’m sorry it took so long.” She whispered, frowning as she searched his face. Being with her helped him get his emotions back. When could Penny say she’d ever helped someone so much? When could she say was the last time she’d ever done anything meaningful at all? “For you to get your emotions back.” She clarified, pain etched in her features. Again, she practically blamed him for this, as if she wouldn’t have pulled away to protect him eventually. As if waiting for Lawrence━her Lawrence━to come back would change anything. It had, though━it made it easier to sever this connection before it was completely unbearable for her. Or worse, it killed him.

As soon as their lips met Lawrence felt an instant connection with Penny, making him realise how much he’d missed her over the past few months. Every part of him was yearning for her, but without his humanity he hadn’t noticed. Now he was ready to let down his walls for her, even going as far as wanting to suggest they take a chance with whatever the fuck was going on between them. But things didn’t go to plan. Realistically he didn’t have a leg to stand on with Penny. He pushed her away and openly admitted he didn’t care about her, but that was the real him talking. It was his asshole alter ego who was hellbent on destroying everything in his life. “I’m sorry. It’s selfish of me to come here and think we could just pick things up after everything.” Like she was going to stand around waiting for him to come to his senses when there were plenty of other men out there for her. Men who were better than Lawence. Unlike his sister Penny didn’t sit there purposely looking for pressure points so she could strike at them in an attempt to bring him back. “Me too.” He muttered quietly. It could have been a lot longer though, especially if he were on his own. It could have taken him years to feel a flicker of something. “Now I’ve just gotta try and… piece my life back together.” The first step was apologising to everyone for his behaviour. Penny had been his first stop and it was a complete car crash. He was going to walk away from her apartment feeling even worse than he did a few minutes prior, which he didn’t think was possible. “I meant what I said earlier as well. I’m sorry for being such an asshole to you at the Christmas party.” PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ NO, PENNY THOUGHT, IT ISN’T SELFISH. BUT she’d screwed this up, and he could’ve come back to… to something. Something that would’ve had him ending up dead, she knew, but that was selfish. She was the one in the wrong, and she was so sorry for making him hurt like this. She never would’ve entertained Tobi if she knew. But now it was too late, and she knew it was for the best.
But seeing the hurt on Lawrence’s face made it feel like it wasn’t. And she’d do anything to change it, but she had to hold herself back from that. If she really cared, she’d let him go.
Penny shook her head softly, but she didn’t speak. She didn’t trust herself not to say something stupid.
If he’d gotten them back sooner, maybe there would’ve been a way to fix this. Maybe she could’ve done something to… Penny didn’t know. Five hundred years and she still didn’t know how to talk to someone she loved. Five hundred years and it still fucking terrified her.
She smiled sadly, giving him a curt nod. That would be his next hill to climb━undoing all the mistakes his other self made. Maybe it was better that he realized the consequences━that he couldn’t return to his life after everything━but it wasn’t as if Lawrence had willing done any of those things. And if she could change this, she would. She didn’t want to watch another flicker of pain cross his features ever again, and she’d make sure it wouldn’t━however she could.
“It’s okay,” Penny whispered, but it wasn’t. They’d lost everything to the bullshit that demon started, and now she’d never get to see where it’d go… never get to see how long she had with Lawrence before he inevitably ended up dead, she reminded herself. Penny reached out, carefully clasping his hand in hers again, giving it a gentle squeeze. “It’s over now.” Clearly, she meant more than one thing, and she felt the chasm open up in her chest, showing the emptiness within. It’d never change, and maybe one day, she’d accept that.

His heart had been broken a few times before, so what was another one on top of that? It was an awful familiar feeling he hadn’t experienced for a few decades. The type of feeling that makes you want to curl up into a ball and cry until your throat is raw and you’re unable to breathe. Lawrence inhaled softly, trying to steady himself as Penny’s words sank in. It was over before it had even begun. The urge to break down in front of Penny was strong, but he somehow held it together. He’d already embarrassed himself by coming over to her apartment. Was he stupid by thinking there could be some kind of future for him and Penny? There were moments he caught a peek of the real Penny. The person she truly was behind all those walls she had built around herself. That was the version of her he found himself falling for. She wanted him to believe she was some cold hearted bitch, but he’d stopped believing that a long time ago. She was just as lost as he was. He looked down at their clasped hands, trying to swallow back the tears that were desperate to spill. He wanted to fight, to find a way to make things right, but he knew that staying would only bring more pain for both of them. She was right. “I wish things could’ve been different. I wish I could undo the past, erase all my mistakes… but I can’t.” He gently released her hand, feeling the warmth slip away, leaving him feeling cold and empty. “Take care of yourself, Penny.” As he walked away, he knew the only person he wanted to see was Teddy, but there was a chance his friend would slam the door in his face. PENNY BARTLETT - end!
