Seeing Mab in the waiting room had unlocked a lot of unprecedented feelings for Mikey. He didn’t know what to do with them but he knew he wasn’t going to share them with her. Apart from Chase she was the only friend he had in Mystic Falls. He’d heard too many stories of friendships being ruined because one person developed feelings. It would become too messy and confusing. Mikey didn’t like messy and confusing. Things were to be kept simple between the pair. In the meantime, he needed to tell her about his time in jail. There was a chance she’d cut ties with him solely because of that. One step at a time though. First step was to see Chase, which was going to be emotionally draining. Apparently his brother would have no idea how much time had passed since he’d been missing. It would be like Mikey had gone to work in the morning and was now returning home. So, he had to pretend like it hadn’t been months since seeing Chase. He decided the best way to do that was to flip the conversation over to the subject of Nemo. They put their differences aside for a brief moment in the train station, leaving their hatred for each other on the outside. But now they were both back Mikey had reverted back to hating Nemo so much he wanted to kill him. Again, one step at a time. Killing Nemo was at the bottom of his list of things to do. He needed to find a way to bring Nemo down without actually murdering him. Mikey took a few minutes standing out in the corridor before sliding his key into Chase’s front door. He puffed out quietly as he pushed the door open, stepping inside. It was difficult not to crumble there and then after spending so long convincing himself he was never going to come home. Hope came in waves within the train station. Whenever he spotted someone had disappeared it would cause a surge of hope, especially when Penny confirmed people were being saved. But then that hope would disappear when he told himself there was a chance no one would save him. “Chase?” He called out as he closed the door too, making his way into the kitchen, where he found his brother. As soon as saw Chase his mouth ran dry as he attempted to swallow back the tears. He’d become an expert at hiding his emotions, but he’d always struggled when it came to hiding them from Chase. He cleared his throat, pulling reeling himself in, “I saw Nemo yesterday.” He watched Chase carefully, waiting for a flicker of worry to flash across his face. “Why didn’t you tell me he was the one who attacked you?” No doubt Chase had a long long list of reasons why he didn’t tell Mikey the truth, but now he was even more pissed he had to hear the truth from Nemo. “He’s sayin’ you attacked him first… which I know is bullshit.” Chase would risk his job for a worthless piece of shit like Nemo, but Mikey was prepared to risk his freedom to put that worthless piece of shit in the ground. He was no gourmet in the kitchen – Roxxi's birthday and the meal he’d blackmailed out of the Michelin-starred Detective were proof of that. Already Chase had burned his thumb on the dish that he’d pulled from the oven so he could add a little more sauce to the chicken he was heating up and he’d been within a hair’s breadth of slicing the pad of his thumb as he’d chopped through the salad he’d been ordered to make to go along with the chicken. ”Tomatoes, artichokes, olives, romaine ... thin sliced red onion. Extra chunk of finger.” Chase muttered to himself as he brushed off his hand against the apron he’d slung on to avoid the mess he knew was coming and swiped at the screen of his phone. The instructions were clear enough, the offer to prep dinner in advance so Roxxi didn’t have to come straight home from a late meeting and immediately go to work in the kitchen met with simple instructions. As if anything more than toast or a bowl of cereal could be.
Roxxi always cooked like she was trying to feed the five thousand (with something better than fishes and loaves). Even when they’d been apart, the food had kept coming, her love language breaking through the barriers he’d tried to throw up around his battered heart. When he’d moved to Mystic Falls the fridge had been bachelor cop empty – heavy on instant coffee, takeout and pepto (it went down easier cold). After Roxxi had started spending time here that’d changed. Fruit and veggies, bought like he’d ever switch his diet, no longer rotted in the crisper drawer. They were stacked in the fridge, leaving him frowning and confused as he’d pulled them and the chicken out.
There’d been a moment’s hesitation as he’d pulled the chicken thighs out, a couple each or the whole thing? Nah. The whole thing had gone into the pan to brown. Mikey might eat at work, but there was a chance he’d come home hungry too. Lately it’d seemed as though there was always a little more to take with him for lunch. Winter was still in full swing, but maybe that just sent people indoors to eat more. During the summer they were out in the square or in the woods, wanting to bask in the warmth while it lasted. Maybe it was time for Mikey’s boss to start hiring again, get some more help behind the counter.
Chase glanced up at the clock as he heard the rattle of keys in the lock. Too early for Roxxi. He might’ve thought too early for Mikey too, but it was his brother’s voice that called out as the door was closed again. ”Hey. In the kitchen. Just pullin’ together dinner…” Him and Roxxi still seemed to be circling one another, uneasy and looking like they were only in the same room when they had no other choice. It’d change tonight, maybe, if he could make this a family style thing the same way it had been when their parents had finally visited a few weeks back. Little changes that felt like they’d make a huge difference for Mikey after everything that’d happened.
Tossing the few slices of onion he’d actually managed into the bowl, Chase glanced over his shoulder. The smile that’d tugged at his lips died instant, his shoulders going stiff. ”Nemo? That skinny kid from when we were kids? Here? You sure?” With a face like that it could’ve gone two ways, Mikey might not’ve had a clue who the son of a bitch was until he got near him, or he’d seen through those scars and had seen Emiliano’s stray underneath, all twig limbs and big dark eyes. His jaw clenched, his gaze flickering over Mikey like he’d find some sign that Nemo had laid a hand on him – for the last time cause this time he was gonna tear off both of them.
Leave it to one of Emiliano’s kids to run heavier on the mouth than the fists. Nemo had never looked capable of swinging a fist – or of taking a punch – but apparently he could tell stories that were probably meant to try and drive a wedge between the Buckley brothers. ”I told you, I didn’t recognise the guy who attacked me,” Chase muttered hoarsely. Maybe on a normal day he wouldn’t have done, but Nemo had been running his mouth that day too and the verbal clues had helped cement the recognition in his mind.
”He’s a fuckin’ liar,” Chase growled, his gaze snapping back to Mikey’s. ”You think I could do that to his face? You see that shit?” He had and now he’d revealed to Mikey that he’d been fully aware of who was throwing him around like a rag doll that day. Stopping just short of grinding his thumb and forefinger into his eyes, Chase dragged the back of his hand across his mouth. The scent of raw onion burned in his sinuses and prickled in his eyes. ”I didn’t want you near the Agnellis,” Chase admitted finally. ”I wanted to protect you. They’ve fucked up your life enough.” And there’d been that fear there that Mikey’s anger would spill over, putting him in jail for first degree murder this time, even if a piece of shit like Nemo deserved to be stamped out the same way Emiliano did. Cockroaches, every single one of them.

It was grating to listen to his probation officer telling him his release was a chance to put the past behind him. He is about to become the author of his own story and choose his own path. It was all positive meaningless bullshit. She didn’t understand that so long as Mikey was a kanima he’d never be free. She didn’t understand the Agnellis. But he nodded and agreed with her bullshit. It was a painstaking hour, but one he needed to force himself through, giving his probation officer lots of smiles and nods. But now his nightmare has started to take place in the form of Nemo. If he was in town it was only a matter of time before the rest of them followed. Mikey needed to get himself ready, but more importantly he needed to make sure Chase wasn’t dragged down with him this time. Nemo had got there first though, going straight for Chase. Freedom was a privilege for Mikey, but there would be no hesitation in killing someone who went after his brother. Nemo’s days were fucking numbered. At first Mikey didn’t recognise Nemo. It was impossible upon first glance, beneath all those scars. That’s what you get for trying to roll with the big boys though. “Positive. He came yellin’ at me outside the diner.” Nemo was practically on the verge of a panic attack when he saw Mikey, throwing his hands around like an idiot, threatening to kill him if he’d touched Giorgia. Most of the ramblings didn’t make sense, but according to Nemo Giorgia was in Mystic Falls too. Chase kept his lips sealed though, admanent he didn’t know who attacked him. It wasn’t difficult to sense his brother was lying to him. Protecting him. But then he crumbled when Mikey threw out the accusations Nemo had told him. “I know he’s lying.” Although he was curious to hear the real story about Nemo’s scar. He didn’t want to go as far as saying Nemo deserved it, but Mikey struggled to hold any sympathy for him. Just because he didn’t have Agnellis blood running through his veins didn’t mean he wasn’t one of them. Emiliano would disagree with that. “It’s a bit late for that. Nemo is here throwin’ his weight around and I think Giorgia is here too.” Mikey walked further into the kitchen, sinking down onto one of the chairs, “I won’t let them drag you into the shit I started twenty years ago.” The first time he was powerless as the gang beat Chase within an inch of his life, but Mikey wasn’t going to stand by doing nothing this time. He wouldn’t let them haul Chase into a car with a gun pressed against his temple, demanding he help them rob a liquor store. This time he was prepared to kill every single one of them to keep Chase safe. Life just seemed to dig its claws in more and more with Mikey, determined to rip him apart. CHASE BUCKLEY

Fuck.
Like shrapnel buried within flesh, the Agnellis were a lasting reminder of past pain. Sharp edged, born of violence, they lingered in his, and Mikey’s, just waiting for the moment they could tear at them again. Chase had hoped that by leaving the state, Mikey would have a fresh start. Emiliano could keep his territory, his sons slowly taking over their old man’s criminal empire, and they could live out the next forty or fifty years in peace. Of course, that son of a bitch was never gonna let Mikey go that easily. Bit by bit they would crush his brother, using him to make it happen.
Chase was sure he could still feel the ache radiating up his wrist from the knuckles he’d bruised trying to stop Nemo the day he’d come from him as he wrapped his hand in the apron he wore to wipe off the acrid scent of the onions. He could imagine Nemo hiding in the fucking shadows outside the Diner, stalking Mikey, just waiting for him to have a moment alone so those thin, quivering lips could spit the poison in his brother’s ears and push him to do the one thing guaranteed to put him back in a cell – murdering an Agnelli.
Guilt burned in his gut as he tried to bluff his way around what the son of a bitch had done. Chase rubbed both hands over the apron as he turned around. He frowned at Mikey, shaking his head before he snorted. ”It’s been a long time man. It could’ve been anybody…” Only it hadn’t been. Nemo had lost his shit on the streets again. He’d have asked if anybody else was there, but he didn’t think Nemo would’ve opened his mouth if there had been. Like most rats he scurried away the minute anybody got close.
”He’s an Agnelli, all they fuckin’ do is lie,” Chase spat, sagging back against the counter. They’d done it to tempt Mikey in the first place, then again and again, making sure that there was no way for Mikey to squirm out of a sentence he hadn’t deserved. Nemo wasn’t Emiliano’s by birth, at least he didn’t think he was, but he’d taken after the old man. Lying, trying to twist both of them up again. He should’ve killed him when he had the chance.
His head dipped, his eyes closing for a second as he prayed for an end to all of this. It could’ve happened right there in the street, a bullet smacking between those dark eyes he’d been seeing in his dreams since, that skinny body bouncing as it hit the blacktop. There’d be a black mark on his record, but they’d have called it a good shoot. When law enforcement was attacked, nobody was gonna argue about how it should end. He’d dreamt of that too. Chase could almost see it behind his closed eyelids now. His fists pounding Nemo’s face, glass shattering, glittering as he’d dragged him through it like someone had before. Blood glittering like rubies on the ground, running in rivers over his hands. His heartbeat kicked up a notch in his chest, something close to relief rising up into his throat.
When his eyes snapped open again, they were dark with concern, his entire expression going hard. He needed to do something about it, there was no sitting around waiting, just watching Mikey’s back anymore. ”Giorgia? One of Emiliano’s brats?” The daughters he’d taken in with their mother. There’d been a whole nest of them, probably vipers just like their step father.
”Fuck that!” Straightening up, Chase dragged off the apron, tossing it aside before he started pacing. His gaze ticked to Mikey then away again, moving as restlessly as the rest of them. ”You didn’t start any of it. That son of a bitch Emiliano did. He had his boys recruiting people, they wouldn’t have gone to that store if he hadn’t told them they could. The blood’s on his hands, Mikey, and it’s gonna stay there. You hear me? You’re not goin’ after this guy. I will.” He had a badge and he had a weapon, that had to be enough to end this. ”What did he tell you I did to him?” The question slipped out hoarsely, almost an afterthought. Out on the street Nemo had seemed so sure of his guilt, his scarred fast twisting like a wet tissue, all torn up, lit up with some inner certainty that he hadn’t been able to shake even as he’d sworn blind it hadn’t been him who’d wrung it all up like that.

Mikey could have brushed it off as being anyone, except Nemo introduced himself to Mikey. Decades had passed since he last saw Nemo but he was still an annoying piece of shit, desperately trying to prove himself to the family. There was no room for Mikey to pass judgement though. He’d done exactly the same thing, but at least now he’d realised his wrongdoings. Nemo was still associated with them, meaning he was a threat to both Mikey and Chase. Someone must have sent him to town. He refused to accept it was just one massive fucking coincidence that they were all in the same tiny town in Virginia. The problem with the Agnelli's is they would throw everyone under the bus if it meant saving their own skin. They didn’t hesitate when they threw Mikey under there, even though they claimed he was one of them now because he’d been bitten. He was never one of them though. He wasn’t even a fucking werewolf. They’d probably throw Nemo under the same bus too considering he didn’t share the same blood, maybe even throw one of their own under there too. Even though they were inching their way back into Mikey’s life there was still a weight lifted off him. He no longer had to listen to them bark orders at him or do whatever they wanted him to do. There was one thing Mikey was struggling to accept. How did some Nemo’s size manage to take down Chase? Chase’s arm was the size of Nemo’s entire body. Unless he didn’t do it alone or used his magic. No fucking way would Nemo take down Chase alone. But whatever, it was a minor detail. The main thing was that Nemo had put Chase in hospital. Mikey nodded his head slowly in response to Chase’s question. “Nemo was tellin’ me to stay away from her, like I’d fuckin’ go near her anyway. I think he thinks I’ve been sleepin’ with her or some shit. It was a weird conversation.” Nemo was foaming at the mouth like a rabid dog, not really making sense when he was talking about Giorgia. Just spitting out threats which Mikey brushed off. He’d managed to get to Chase, but Chase was human. Mikey would crave Nemo’s skin from his face. His eyes followed Chase as he started to pace across the kitchen. “No you ain’t going after him.” He snapped. Like fuck he was going to stand back and let Chase deal with Nemo. Mikey had desperately tried to keep Chase out of everything, most of the time he failed, but he wouldn’t this time. “Some shit about you scarrin’ his face. Said you went for him first, so he came for you, but like I said. I know it ain’t true.” How would Chase even manage to cause scars like that? Mikey was the one with the claws. “How about neither of us go after Nemo? Just let him rot somewhere with Giorgia. They’re expectin’ us to do somethin’ so let's do nothin’.” It pained him to make the suggestion considering he was itching to get his hands on Nemo, but what good would that bring? Mikey would be the one facing the consequences. “Can you have a look into Giorgia? Put them cop powers to good use.” He said with a smile on his face. Perhaps if they could find out exactly where Giorgia was, they could keep an eye on her. CHASE BUCKLEY - wanna wrap with yours?

His sergeant had probably known every time he’d plugged the Agnelli name into the computer at the station, but he’d never been pulled up on it. All of them had known his story and the half of the station that wasn’t in Emiliano’s pocket had probably been glad he was trying to do something about the son of a bitch – they probably thought he was gonna die doing it and yeah, he almost had. Every scar he’d got from it was worth it, even if Emiliano was still sitting on his throne, king of his little cess pool. Mikey had gotten free in the end and until Nemo had shown up here he’d believed they were finally a fucking world away from the Agnelli kingdom.
Would Sheriff Forbes react the same way if he started digging through the system again, looking for some sign that Giorgia was here in town too? The public records probably didn’t hold much, Emiliano had his way of hiding the obvious shit, but with the FBI still lingering in town too, he had a deeper well to go dipping in. He’d still do it. Chase’s frown deepened, his gaze fixed on Mikey’s face like he’d find the first signs of Giorgia’s presence right there. ”There’s somethin’ broken in his head. She’s probably back home, slitherin’ around Emiliano. This is just another game they’re playin’.” He’d have asked whether or not Mikey could’ve been sleeping with her, but after what had happened with Roxxi, he doubted it. The only woman who’d been around him was Mab and she didn’t look a damn thing like any of the Agnellis had. People changed, but not that much.
Bit by bit the life they’d tried to leave behind was creeping in here. Nemo hadn’t gotten what he’d wanted out of him and so he’d pushed further. If one of those skinny fucking hands swung at Mikey he’d break it, snapping one finger at a time. Rounding on his brother, Chase brushed his knuckles over his mouth as Mikey snapped at him. Dark brows rose, eyes just as dark staring right into his brother’s lighter pair. ”I’ve got a badge and a gun. Anybody asks what happened to him, I can call it justified. You lay one fuckin’ finger on him and you’re goin’ right back where you just got out of.” It seemed like a no brainer to him. He’d take every fucking hit so Mikey didn’t have to. Losing his job, going to jail himself, he’d take whatever came just as long as Mikey got to stay free.
In the months after that skinny asshole had mopped the streets with him he’d woken up dozens of times from dreams of that fucked up face. Something glittering in the raw wounds, blood sheeting down Nemo’s face in a mask, coating his own hands so hot that it felt like it was still there when he woke. He’d thrust his hands up from under the sheets, expecting to see the blood still there, black in the low light. Chase’s jaw was ticking back and forth as he shook his head, muscles jumping at the hinge fast as his heartbeat. ”If there’s anybody that started this shit, it was Emiliano. He never stopped.” Now it was clear he was never gonna. If it wasn’t Nemo coming after the two of them again, it’d be someone else. Again and again until he was in the ground.
Chase stiffened, finally stopping pacing as Mikey suggested both of them back off. It was the same thing he’d tried the last time, publicly at least. He’d spent plenty of nights out on the street with Domino though, the two of them in the cab of his truck, watching out for that scarecrow form slipping through the streets. "They ain’t gonna just slip away…” he started before he puffed out a breath. Maybe Mikey was right, maybe this was Nemo making his push again to try and get a reaction and he’d nearly run straight at the two of them. Pinching his lips together, he nodded finally. ”I’ll run her name down at the station, see if I can find somethin’ out. Maybe we’ll get lucky.” Not that the Buckley brothers had found much in the way of good luck since Mikey had first fallen in with Georgie.
The one piece of good luck he’d had would be home in a couple of hours and he wasn’t gonna let her see either one of them like this. His job had already left enough of a stain on their relationship. Letting out a long breath, Chase crossed back to the counter, picking up the apron. A grin tugged tiredly at the corner of his mouth. ”There’s plenty here. Let your little brother cook for you once, huh?” He tipped his head towards the table. Roxxi always ended up making enough for an army and if this fight really was coming, the two of them were gonna need to fuel up for it.
