Waving off the last of the customers, Olivia breathed a sigh of relief. She closed the door that led out onto the porch and leaned back against it. These nights where she handled closing up always felt bittersweet in a way. When she first moved here she’d done it every night, usually showing the same faces out, knowing she’d probably then spend another hour here cleaning up. Sometimes she’d have company but ninety percent of the work had fallen on her shoulders in the first couple of weeks.
She listened to the signs of life from the apartment upstairs – the one that Raik was occupying these days. Half an hour ago she’d told him to take off, Henrik was here with her, they’d handle closing up tonight. He was her steadiest worker, the guy she knew she could call on at any point, but she never wanted to take advantage of that. When she could, she wanted to be hands on with her place instead of sitting back in the office, or at home, just paying people to handle everything for her. That had never been the dream, although when she’d first moved to Mystic Falls she hadn’t known what that dream was going to hold.
Henrik. The kids. A family that gathered around them all, one that she was marrying into just as soon as they finally got the wedding organised.
Tonight the kids were busy, which seemed to happen more and more the older Alice and Connor got, but hopefully they’d already have headed home. Her mum had always been at the window, wringing her hands together until her kids had all arrived home, especially during and after the war. She knew how dangerous it was out there in the dark and couldn’t rest until she knew her children - and their children – were safe. Mystic Falls was a speck on the map in comparison to London, but there were still dangers out there and both she and Henrik probably knew that more than most.
The corners of her mouth lifted as she saw him emerging from the kitchen. Not wanting to waste a moment, she’d been cleaning up around the last handful of customers, getting everything set so they could head out almost as soon as that door was closed behind them. She’d be back here early tomorrow, setting up for what was bound to be another busy day with New Year’s Eve so close. Unlike a lot of businesses over here in the States, she’d closed up on Christmas day, insisting her staff have time with their families if they could. They’d opened again on the 27th, and now it would be a headlong rush until the new year brought dry January and a whole host of resolutions to slow things down a little bit until people tossed all of that aside.
Olivia pulled away from the door and headed over to meet him at the hatch that cut through the bar. Being this close to her fiancé always had that warmth building in her chest. She curled her fingers into the front of his shirt, anchoring herself as she kissed him. ”They’re all gone. I thought I was gonna have to carry them out in the end.” Her grin broke with a chuckle. ”Are you ready to head out too? I thought I heard lightning outside, it’s probably wise to get back before we get hit with another storm.” They’d been all too frequent this winter, reminding her of home with the way they’d lit up the dark clouds that seemed to leave the sky constantly leaden.

For a long time a life like this had seemed like it was never going to be on the cards for Henrik. He had spent centuries in Heaven after he died before Crowley brought him back and following his resurrection he had worked for the King of Hell doing everything that was asked of him. It was only after learning that his family was still alive that Henrik had realised that it was time he started living his life for himself and he didn’t regret it one bit. He still had Crowley in his life and as crazy as it might sound, the demon had been more a father to him than Mikael ever had. He also had Castiel back in his life once more after the angel had kept him company during his time in Heaven but aside from being reunited with his family, the true miracles were Olivia and the kids. Henrik had spent a long time blaming himself for what had happened to his siblings after he died and there was a part of him that still blamed himself now but he was doing his best to atone for that. He knew he was lucky to have found Olivia and even luckier to have her love him in return. He often didn’t feel like he deserved that love but he was doing his best to live up to the way she thought of him and he knew that he couldn’t do anything more than that. Soon he and Olivia would be getting married and that was something that Henrik really couldn’t wait for. He knew that they had long lives ahead of them, Olivia was a kitsune which meant that she was able to stop herself ageing and she had done so a long time ago while he had finally managed to make himself immortal. Even now the family they had built together still seemed a little surreal but Henrik knew better than to take it for granted. He had started working at the Salvatore School a while ago so he could pass his knowledge of magic on to the next generation but he also helped out at the bar when he could and even when Olivia didn’t need him to work he still sometimes stopped by to spend some time with her while she was working. Henrik knew that some of his siblings might make fun of him for that but the truth was that he didn’t care. He might not have been alive for as long as any of them or even Olivia had but he had been through so much and he knew to make the most of the good things while they lasted. He had already lost Olivia once when the angels killed her and again when he was taken by the angels in exchange for being able to bring her back. There was always a new threat they were going to have to face but it was the same for everyone in Mystic Falls and Henrik knew that they would face whatever it was head on together the same way they always did. That evening he had been working at the bar and he helped Olivia close up after she’d told Raik to go and enjoy his evening. Henrik would have stuck around anyway and it didn’t need three of them to close up so it made sense and it wasn’t long before he had finished stacking the last of the chairs on the tables and cleared the last few glasses away. Heading back through the hatch that led from the bar into the main room, Henrik felt a smile touch his lips as Olivia made her way towards him and his hands found her waist as he kissed her back. “It was definitely a close one, I haven’t seen anyone that reluctant to leave for a while,” he admitted, bringing his hand up and brushing her hair away from her face gently. “Definitely, let’s get out of here,” he said, handing Olivia her jacket before pulling his own on and holding the door open for her. She’d left home almost before she was old enough to drink in pubs, but Olivia had been in and out of enough of them as a teenager to fetch her brothers and sisters home for dinner. Jimmy, the owner of the Auld Triangle would wave her in, pointing out wherever Jack, Maud or Daisy had settled in a corner. By the time she’d hit sixteen she’d been allowed to stay with them, clutching a half a shandy as they’d laughed and talked, falling asleep in one of the chairs close to the fire when Jimmy would throw the bolt on the door and let them all stay for a lock in. The war had put an end to most of that, but when her sisters wrote to her after they’d drop Jimmy’s regards in after they’d told her all the gossip they’d picked up right there. When she’d opened Campbell’s the main idea had been some place the supernatural community could come together, but she’d also liked the idea of being this town’s Jimmy – a shoulder to lean on, an ear to bend, someone who’d never turn you away when you needed them.
Maybe a few of the regulars had tried to take advantage of that, but there wasn’t gonna be a lock-in tonight. She had a fiancé waiting for her and two kids would be home at some point tonight too. Olivia was ecstatic to shuffle the last of them out and trail back in the direction of the bar. If she’d been human her back and feet would’ve been killing her, instead of her just being wrapped in that softer feeling of exhaustion at the end of a long day. Dinner eaten sprawled on the couch with Henrik would put an end to it, when they got there.
She leaned into his touch now, her hands eventually sliding from his chest, up around his neck as she leaned in. Her smile was sweet and wide, brushed against his once more before he was brushing her hair back from her face. ”I guess they were having too good a time to leave,” she chuckled. They were probably far more used to Raik chasing them out too, a six foot two guy with shoulders almost as broad as the doorway they were leaving by had a bit more gravitas than she did. Undoubtedly they’d all be back here tomorrow night, just as merry, just as keen to keep the party going.
Olivia slipped into her jacket, stepping out onto the porch. She looked up at the sky, frowning faintly. ”I hope the kids get back before the storm breaks,” she murmured. Her mum had always fretted until all of her kids were home, standing in the bay window of the house, keeping an eye out for them even when they’d been old enough to be out at work. Adulthood didn’t make a difference to it at all, she’d always worried about them. ”We could get some take out on the way home maybe. Saves the two of us cooking something.”
As the door closed Olivia turned back to take Henrik’s hand. She tugged him across the porch and down the stairs towards the spot where she’d parked at the curb earlier. Lightning flickered across the sky, feeling like it was going to land right on top of the bar. Looking back with a shiver, she frowned at a figure up on the porch. ”Hi. Sorry, we’re closed already. We’re open again at midday tomorrow.” There was no way she was going to stay and argue about it. Not with the weather turning so viciously. The shiver was still there though, creeping down her spine, tingling like it was made of static electricity, not cold.

Henrik knew that he could have stopped working at the bar when he got the job at the Salvatore School but the truth was that while he loved being a teacher, he also loved being able to work alongside Olivia. It had given them the chance to get even closer and even though there were some people who thought that working together and being together wasn’t a good idea, it was different for them. They knew what it was like to have to live without each other, he had lost Olivia when the angels came to take him back to Heaven and she had lost him when he made a deal with the angels to bring her and their unborn children back to life. It hadn’t been an easy road for the two of them but they had made it through everything that life had thrown at them so far and soon Henrik hoped they would be able to finally get married. He had asked Olivia a while ago because he knew that he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her and he had made himself immortal so she wouldn’t have to face the choice of either giving up her immortality or watching him die of old age one day while she remained the same. It had taken him a while to get all of the ingredients together but he had finally managed it and now there wasn’t anything left standing in their way. They had already built a life together, they had two amazing kids and a place they could call home, but Henrik was old fashioned and he knew he wanted to take that final leap. Olivia had been married before and he could understand why he might not want to rush into getting married given the fact that she’d lost her first husband but Henrik knew that he wasn’t going anywhere and he hoped that she could see that. Holding Olivia in his arms like this made it feel like nothing else mattered and a smile formed on Henrik’s face as she spoke. “I think you’re right. It’s your fault for making this place so incredible,” he teased before leaning forward and pressing his lips against hers once more. Olivia had wanted to create a place where anyone who was supernatural like them could feel safe and she had certainly done that. Slipping on his jacket, Henrik followed Olivia outside before locking the door behind them. “I hope they do too. They’re good kids, they’ll be fine,” Henrik said gently. He knew that Olivia always worried about the kids being out when the weather turned bad and the truth was that Henrik did too but he still wanted to try and reassure Olivia as best he could. “It’s like you read my mind,” he chuckled as she suggested they get some take out on their way home. “What are you in the mood for?” he asked, knowing there were a few things that sprang to mind for him so he was curious to see whether any of them matched what Olivia wanted to have to eat. It wasn’t long before Olivia’s hand was in his and they headed in the direction of the car. Henrik would be lying if he said the lightning being so close didn’t make him feel uneasy, normally it didn’t bother him at all but there was just something about this that felt different somehow. Following Olivia’s gaze as she looked back at the bar, he was surprised to find a figure standing there. He couldn’t see the person’s face in the shadows but he was certain that they hadn’t been there before. There was something about the person that had the hair on the back of his neck standing on end, though, and that uneasy feeling inside him grew. “Come on, I’m not sure why but I’ve got a bad feeling about that person,” he said, keeping his voice low so that only Olivia would hear him. “Let’s get out of here,” he added as he started to draw her in the direction of the car. A few years ago their stagger home would’ve been a shorter one. They’d have cleared the last of the drinkers out, thrown the bolts and wound their way up the stairs to the apartment overhead. She’d loved her little apartment up there and the memories it had contained for the two of them, but once the kids were on their way the apartment had been far too small. They could have made it work, Olivia had suggested cheekily at the time, just like her mum had with the twelve of them packed into the four bedrooms. There hadn’t been the need though, they’d found a place for the four of them, one with plenty of room to build their life as a growing family. Now Raik lived up there, building his own life in this town. She’d miss him if he ended up moving on from the bar, although she knew he was capable of so much more than just serving drinks. He was a veteran, the same way she had been, capable and diligent enough that she was sure she was leaving the place in safe hands when she left every night. If anything – absolutely unlikely happened – happened, Raik wouldn’t hesitate to call her back.
Pride for what she’d done here with her bar bubbled up in her chest, lending colour to her cheeks as she smiled up at Henrik. It had all been with his help, his support. ”I had a lot of helping making it that way,” she told him. ”I don’t think it would’ve been half the place it is without you.” There had still been some part of her that wasn’t sure she could finally stop running but Henrik had convinced her of that and so much more. Jacket on, she she had drifted towards the door, pausing just to look up at the sky. It had been a bad year for the weather so far, storms seeming to come and go so frequently. ”They’ve got their father’s sense, they’ll be alright.” Still, until she saw them both safely home, part of her would worry the same way her mum had about all of them, counting them off as they walked through the door at night. They’d have a relaxed dinner, sprawled on the sofa maybe, watching a little TV as a family. Olivia scrunched her nose as she tried to decide what to pick up for dinner on the way home. ”How about pizza? With plenty of pepperoni?” They wouldn’t even really need plates then. It would be sheer laziness.
Olivia could practically taste it as they slipped out of the bar and headed towards the car. Maybe a cold beer and some potato skins on the side. She could already feel the mild tension of the day slipping away from her, well, until the lights had flickered and the man standing on the porch. There wasn’t a word from him as she called out to tell him they were closed. Her hand tightened on Henrik’s, her pulse kicking up as Henrik practically whispered to her. ”I’ll call Raik from the car, tell him to call the sheriff if this guy doesn’t leave,” she whispered. ”I’m getting a bad feeling too. You got the keys?” The sooner they were in the car, the better she’d feel. Strangers encroaching into spaces she thought were safe still rattled her. There’d been a storm the night George had been killed, the weather driving the hunters’ vehicle off the road. Another crack of lightning raced over head, sending a chill down her spine that shot into her chest as another figure seemed to appear on the other side of the road. !Henrik!” His name shot out of her as the figure seemed to raise his hand. Just like when the angels had come for him she didn’t hesitate. The ground between them and the man was torn up in an instant, roots thrust up, tangling around the man’s ankles like they could drag him down into the ground.

Henrik hadn’t thought that things would end up this way when he arrived in Mystic Falls, he had literally bumped into Elijah in the street and learned that his siblings were still alive after all and since then he had gone from living with Elijah to living with the woman of his dreams. Henrik knew he was lucky to have found what he had with Olivia and they had been blessed with two incredible kids so he knew that he really wouldn’t have it any other way. They could have stayed in the apartment over the bar but it would have felt far too cramped with all of them living there so moving into a house had definitely seemed like the right thing to do and Henrik didn’t regret it one bit. The house had become their home and that was just as it should be. It meant that they had a longer way to go when they finished working at the bar but it was definitely worth it. Henrik had already grown up in a cramped house and while he had loved having all of his siblings there with him under the same roof, it had been a tight fit as they got older and he had wanted to make sure that their kids didn’t have to go through the same thing. Now the kids were older, aged up by the spell he had cast to protect Hope and the twins from Dahlia, and they didn’t need them as much anymore but they were still all together and he knew that he wouldn’t want it any other way. Working at both the Salvatore School and the bar meant that Henrik got to have the best of both worlds, he got to help their kids and others come into their powers and watch over them and he also still got to work alongside Olivia. It had worked out better than he had ever thought that it would and he was grateful for that. “I don’t know about that, you’d already done a great job before I started working there. This was always your dream,” he said, a smile touching his lips as he looked over at Olivia. “I’m glad you think so,” he chuckled as Olivia said the kids would be fine because they had his sense. “They might have my sense but they definitely got their brains from you.” He could see so much of Olivia in the kids and that was something that had taken him by surprise to begin with since it had always seemed like such a cliché but it was definitely something that he loved. As Olivia asked about pizza with plenty of pepperoni, Henrik couldn’t help but smile. “That sounds perfect,” he grinned, giving her hand a squeeze as they headed outside. “That’s a good idea. Something about this just doesn’t feel right,” Henrik admitted. He still couldn’t see the guy’s face but he had a bad feeling that he just couldn’t seem to shake and he wasn’t at all surprised that Olivia could feel it too. “Yeah, I have,” he said, unlocking the car as they approached. Before they had even reached it there was a flash of lightning and another figure appeared which just made that bad feeling intensify. “I see him. We need to get out of here,” he said, letting his back rest against Olivia’s so no one could come at either of them from behind. Moments later Olivia had attacked one of the men and Henrik sent the other one flying backwards before making the branches of the tree the guy hit wrap around his arms and legs keeping him in place. “Come on,” he said, taking Olivia’s hand in his and pulling her towards the car. Whoever these guys were they were up to something and Henrik didn’t want to wait around and find out what that was. OLIVIA CAMPBELL

Nerves had left her shaking as she’d signed on the dotted line that had made Campbell’s hers. Fear should have been something she was long used to by then, but putting down roots for the first time in fifty years wasn’t the same as tracking an enemy aircraft across the sea or standing in the rain, desperately trying to protect your husband. In those moments you didn’t have time to think about all the things that could go wrong. The drawn out process of buying the bar, of getting the place set up had left her plenty of time to do that and until people had started coming back to the bar night after night, Olivia still hadn’t been sure she was doing the right thing. There could’ve been a better town out there, a better bar, a smarter move to make. She’d still questioned it from time to time – until Henrik had revealed his feelings too her. It had always felt as though fate had led George to her, now she knew that she’d been lucky to have that happen twice. After that there hadn’t been a chance in Hell that she was going anywhere and it had rapidly become obvious that Henrik wouldn’t either. Mystic Falls was home.
A warmth candled inside of her every time her fiancé walked through the door of her bar. After a long day of work at the Salvatore school she wouldn’t have blamed him if he’d wanted to hear home and get some rest after handling other people’s kids all day. She loved seeing him there though, feeling as though Campbell’s was as much a family endeavour as anything else. Olivia chuckled lightly and chook her head at him. ”I might have laid the groundwork, but you helped build it up from there.” Between them they’d turned it into the community hub she’d always wanted it to be. Her lips settled into a broad grin that twitched a little as she’d seen the bruise-black of the sky outside. ”I know so, and I’d argue that. You’re just as smart and you’ve got the biggest heart with it. The kids really got the absolute best of their dad.” Olivia knew they’d gotten plenty from her too, and despite there not being an ounce of blood shared between the twins and her mother, she swore that she could see little hints of Florence in them too. A kindness and generosity that she was so proud of. She could still parts of her mum in her too, including that urge to make sure that everyone who walked into her home was well fed. Florence probably would’ve turned her nose up at pizza to start with, but she’d have been missing out. Grinning, she started planning just what she’d order the minute they hit the pizzeria.
The thought of crispy pepperoni and a night with Henrik flickered slightly as they stepped outside, just like the lightning that forked its way across the sky. A shiver ran down her spine, nerves jangling at the man’s silence. Most folks would apologise and head off but he lingered there. Raik had been in the military and could probably deal with most threats, but she didn’t want to put him in danger. If he said the man was still out there she’d get him to call the Sheriff’s department. ”He’s weird,” she said under her breath. Scary more like and the longer it was taking them to get to the car, the more she didn’t like the feeling in the air. Olivia pressed close to Henrik, her hand reaching back to find his hip lightly, as though the two of them would be fine as long as their bodies were in contact with one another. Henrik had already moved into a defensive position, back to back with her. In one shocking instant the situation grew worse, another man arrived and on instinct she was already reaching out with her power to stop the shot the man seemed ready to take at the two of them. ”What the hell is that thing? Are the angels back again?” They hadn’t looked like the angels though. Those had been human looking and what she’d seen as the man was pulling down into the ground was something more like the bark of a tree than a face. ”Go, go, go,” Olivia panted as she tore at the car door, the fob on the keys unlocking it, thankfully. There was another flash of lightning, revealing a third man. Had he not learned after what had happened between the first two?
