That morning she’d stood out front of their apartment building, watching as Mikey’s brother had emerged. Breath pluming in the air, freezing in her chest as she’d seen him emerge, the brunette with him. A deep line cut between Chase’s brows, maybe put there by a night short of sleep, less likely it was from realising that his brother had been snatched up by a bunch of horse riding supernatural assholes. In the end she’d watched the two of them walk away. Maybe going and telling him that he had a brother trapped somewhere that he couldn’t remember would have sped things along, but there was no guarantee and what Tobi had promised was meant to be a surefire way of getting Mikey back anyway.
At a jog, she headed through the lobby of her building and towards the stairs. The bag on her back – the one packed with what she’d been told to get for this little projection-spell-reality-hopping-scheme Tobi had told her about – swayed heavily with each step. Doubt weighed just as heavily in the pit of her stomach. Stopping blaming Tobi and Cassie entirely for letting St. John get past them didn’t mean that she was gonna entirely be able to trust him to do this. Too many years of living under the black cloud of Chiara’s paranoia and hatred made blind trust absolutely impossible.
She could finally feel Mikey’s presence again as she hurried through her apartment door and started setting up. He might’ve back to his brother’s apartment weeks before he’d been taken, but some part of her had still been expecting to walk back in and find him on the sofa, or to wake up in the night, wrapped around him in the bed they’d ended up sharing.
Mab guessed she could’ve set up anywhere in the apartment, but her bedroom had been where she’d felt that bond the most, so it had to be there. The covers were smoothed out, whatever she’d scraped together for this thing set out on top of the dresser by the time Tobi knocked at the door.
Hope wedged itself beneath her ribs as she opened the door and let him into the apartment. Every story her great-grandmother had told her about the Ghost Riders, every threat made over what happened when you didn’t behave (as though Chiara had the power to call them down), made it clear that you couldn’t save people once they were taken, but Tobi had disproved that. If he’d managed to get a sibling back, then there was hope for Mikey. The memory of him had coming rushing back with a sledgehammer’s brutality as they’d stood at that party and Tobi had crowed about what he’d managed to do.
”Through here,” she told him, leading the way into her bedroom. Nerves had never sat well with her, leaving her knotting her hands together now. ”You better be able to bring us back.” The warning was underscored with a scowl as she stretched out on the bed, hands laced over her stomach like she was about to take a nap instead of be launched into the centre of some supernatural lair. Things might’ve softened a little between them, but she wouldn’t have been Chiara’s principessa if she didn’t see the possibility for screwing her over in this – send her there and then leave her there, getting rid of everybody’s witchy little problem.
When the moment came, she sucked in a breath, holding herself stiffly until things around her felt different. There was more space, more sound, the background noise of a place filled with people. Mab’s eyes shot open. She wasn’t in Mystic Falls anymore and Tobi wasn’t lurking over her, smirking with an apology that he hadn’t been able to pull it off after all.
People were spread among the seats, most staring blindly up at departure boards where just about every train seemed cancelled. A few looked up at her, brows furrowing before they glanced away. ”Mikey?” Her voice rang out loud, sending up a few disgruntled sounds, but she couldn’t have cared less. Who knew how long she had here before Tobi started pulling her back, she wasn’t about to waste it by creeping around in the weird hush. ”Mikey!” Another crack of sound, one that sounded a little desperate this time. Had his brother managed to pull him back already? Was that where they’d been going that morning? No.
Movement out of the corner of her eye had her turning. Dark hair, the scruff of his beard darkening his jaw, the face she’d woken up to every morning for weeks swimming out of focus as she blinked back uncharacteristic tears and bolted towards him. They’d never exactly been the hands on kinda friendly, not even when he’d been living with her – sleep had been the only time they’d allowed themselves to migrate towards that, but now she was throwing her arms around his neck, holding on tight.

If his parents knew he’d stolen the spell he’d be in a world of shit. They couldn’t ground him anymore, but there would be a lot of yelling. In the current situation though it held a lot of power. People would be paying good money to get their hands on a spell which could save their loved ones. It was borderline immortal to sell the spell, but it was a thought brewing in the back of his mind. It wasn’t the only thought brewing though. Something needed to be done about Kai, but he wasn’t going to drag Mab into that shit just yet. The first job was to save her friend from the Ghostriders. She was adamant they were just friends, but it didn’t stop Tobi from attempting to tease her about it. Tobi turned up at Mab’s apartment that evening, clutching onto the spell which he had written down on a napkin he found in his pocket. He followed her through the house, into her apartment. “Trust me. You’ll be anchored to me the entire time. Once you find him, grab him and say the incantation I taught you.” There were nerves bubbling in his stomach though. Could he do this alone? His family performed the spell last time, but now it was just Tobi and his magic. “No cats? You strike me as a cat lady.” He said with a grin on his face as they entered the bedroom. He opened the napkin up as Mab climbed into the bed. “Please be quick. I’ll only be able to hold the spell for so long.” He wasn’t sure what would happen if he ran out of energy before she came back. Tobi watched as Mab closed her eyes, his attention diverting back to the napkin as he began to read out the Latin words written down. MIKEY BUCKLEY

The numbers were decreasing and now Mikey was starting to pay attention to who had gone. Winter was nowhere to be seen and neither was Penny. According to Kace Winter was adamant she wasn’t going to be saved because she virtually had no family. Penny echoed a similar statement about herself. But suddenly they were gone. Either they were dead or they’d been saved. If they had been saved then why hadn’t anyone remembered Mikey? These two people claiming they had no one had been remembered. Mikey had his brother, but Chase hadn’t managed to spark any memories. Perhaps it was because Mikey had been so absent from Chase’s life for twenty years. He couldn’t reach that far back to retrieve some memory of having an older brother in his life. If Chase wasn’t going to come for him then surely Mab would? They hadn’t been friends that long, but they’d spend a lot of time together. They’d shared a bed. Waking up next to each other every morning while he was living with her. Then one day suddenly he was gone. Erased from the earth. Doubt started to creep in though, questioning whether he’d made an impact on her life at all. She’d certainly made an impact on him, but it could have all been one sided. Their friendship had yet to reach the next stage either where he told her the truth about his past. He was waiting for the right time to mention it to her but it never came. By sharing the truth he was risking losing her as a friend, but it was a must. The departure clicked once more, displaying multiple trains. All trains were cancelled. Recently Mikey had been piling his attention towards the departure board trying to figure out what it meant. Mystic Falls occasionally disappeared off there, but then reappeared a few days later. His theory was the towns displayed on the board were where the Ghostriders were hunting. Time was dragging on inside the station, but Mikey chose not to count the days. He did that while he was locked, but that was different. He had an end date. This nightmare had no end date and if knew how many days had passed it would send him into a spiral. By now he was an expert at staring at blank walls for hours. He’d done it for twenty years. But all of this felt different. He felt more hopeless inside the train station than he did inside of prison. “Mikey?”— It was Mab’s voice. He bolted upright in his seat, trying to find out where the voice had come from. Insanity had finally taken a hold of him. Maybe it was for the best. But then her voice rang through the waiting room again, followed by someone shushing. No, this had to be real. Mikey sprang out of his seat, his eyes darting around trying to find Mab. He spotted her quickly. It wasn’t hard considering she looked out of place. “Mab!” He rushed over toward her, meeting her in the middle and flinging his arms around her body. At that moment it hit him like a truck, just how much he’d missed her. “I don’t understand. How’d you get here? Did they get you?” He inhaled softly, taking in her smell. Fuck, he never wanted to let go of her but time wasn’t on their side. Reluctantly he pulled back from her, his gaze settling on her face with his hands still on her waist. Were friends supposed to miss each other this much? MAB CARMELLO

Putting her life in Tobi’s hands was one thing, putting Mikey’s in them was another. She had crimes still to pay for and Mab was pretty sure that karma would be coming for her sooner rather than later. Mikey had already almost ended up paying some of that price for her, dragging her out, saving her ass even when she hadn’t deserved it. That was enough, especially after Joseph had been murdered for loving her. History wasn’t about to repeat itself.
”Cause I’m witch, or cause I’m just like them?” A loner who’d swipe with her claws whenever she felt like it. Maybe he wasn’t that wrong, but she’d never looked to fill up her life like that. There’d been no room for anybody else in it when it was so filled with ghosts – until Mikey had slipped in. Maybe he’d been the stray cat in all of this, scarred around the edges, looking for a home, at least for a while. Someone who gave her those warning little pats when she’d deserved them. If this plan of Tobi’s worked, she wouldn’t be putting up ‘lost ex-roommate’ posters around town, she’d be bringing him home.
Nodding, Mab curled her hands in the covers, closing her eyes as though that would help. ”Fast as I can,” she promised. Last thing they needed was that way home vanishing just as she laid hands on him again, hope vanishing like smoke as she desperately tried to hold onto it.
Here her hands were curled into fists as she started to desperately search among the rows of seats, as though she was holding onto that hope and the metaphysical line that connected her back to Tobi. She dipped her head, checking the downcast faces as she went past, hoping that the next she saw would be him. When it finally was, Mab flew at him.
Apologies stoppered up in her throat as she balanced there on her toes. Sorry for taking so long to remember him, to recall just who’d been wrapped up with her in that bed, to figure out why the hell she’d bought cupcakes and pissed off the guy in the diner when she’d taken them in there. The memory of that had her huffing a breath of relief out against Mikey’s throat. She’d had a reason to go soft and buy them after all, a gift to someone who deserved far more apologies than that from her. A million would spill out eventually – they had the time to now.
”No,” Mab promised sharply, looking up into those now familiar dark eyes as Mikey drew back. Her arms stayed around his neck, her hold looser now, but solid enough that if something happened she’d stay holding onto him when it did. ”They haven’t been near me. I know someone who broke in here. He came to me with a way to do it. It put the last piece of the puzzle into place. I started remembering things. I never should’ve forgotten them. I never should’ve forgotten you.” It had cracked something inside her when she had. The one person she’d gotten close to, the guy she’d missed when he’d left her place, the man who’d started to break down the scar tissue that had built up around her heart without even knowing it.
Her brow furrowed as she studied him, looking him over like she’d find some wound. Mikey didn’t seem the sort who would’ve gone down easily. She had no clue how the Ghost Riders had gotten to him in the first place, how they rounded people up. ”Are you OK? Did they hurt you?” One hand slid to his cheek, her thumb tracing his cheekbone as stared into his eyes. ”We need to go,” she said hoarsely, remembering the orders Tobi had given her. Say the words, get out. ”Hold onto me, OK? I don’t know if this’ll work if we’re not in contact with each other.” She didn’t know for sure it would work at all, but there was no way the clock could’ve been counting down yet, could it? Letting out a long breath, Mab began to mutter the spell that would take them back.
The spell trickled off her tongue, the words pronounced clearly as though a slurred syllable would have the whole thing failing. Mab thought she felt the cord in her hands again, tugging like she was a fish on a hook. Tobi better have been strong enough to pull her in. The station started to fade around them, her body feeling that shift again. It threw her off balance, bouncing her off the mattress as she landed. Her eyes shot open, staring up at Mikey. Tobi was probably crowing, doing his little victory dance across her bedroom, but the only thing she saw was Mikey.

Tobi shared some personality traits with Kai, which concerned him. They were both sarcastic, cocky and unserious about almost everything in life. But was being a complete fucking psychopath something that ran in the family? Would Tobi wake up one day with the urge to kill his family? Surely not because here he was helping Mab by doing a spell which could kill him. That counted for something. He felt something warm resting on his upper lip, followed by a metallic taste on his tongue as he recited the spell. Tobi quickly wiped the blood away before it dripped down onto Mab’s bedding. He opened one eye, peeked down at Mab who was still unconscious. “Goddamn it Mab.” He muttered to himself before he returned to chanting the Latin words. The waiting room was the size of her bedroom. Surely it wasn’t taking that long to find her boyfriend who wasn’t a boyfriend just a man she wanted to save. He didn’t want to leave Mab in there but also didn’t want to die. Again. His parents certainly wouldn’t bring him back this time especially when they found out he died from doing a spell he stole from them. It was all for a good cause though. His dad wouldn’t appreciate that though. Their spell should be kept within the coven because if they shared it with one person who knows how many people would find out. Next minute there’d be every witch and warlock in Mystic Falls turning up at their downstep. For some weird reason he knew he could trust Mab not to tell anyone. Another few minutes passed and he was considering breaking the connection between himself and Mab when he heard movement. His eyes shot open and Mab was back, along with her male companion. Don’t stare, Tobi. he reminded himself as he looked over at the man. If this was Mab’s man she’d done well. He wiped away the fresh blood on his nose, “I need some water.” He announced to the pair of them before slipping out of the room. MIKEY BUCKLEY

Mikey was completely overwhelmed with happiness when he saw Mab, but concern filled his mind when he thought maybe she’d been taken as well. Obviously spending everyday with Mab at his side wasn’t an awful thing but he didn’t want them both to be trapped. It was a massive fucking relief when she told him she hadn’t been captured too, following by an apology for forgetting him. “It’s fine. You’re here now, that’s all that matters.” She was the one to come and save him from hell. Mikey imagined Chase would be the one remembering him, but his presence had made an impression on Mab. Enough that she was able to recall their memories and come for him. Those sleepovers were worth it in the end. There were so many things he wanted to say to her, but time wasn’t on their side. It had been a while since the Ghostriders galloped into the waiting room, which means they would be back soon with more helpless victims to fill the seats. Some which had been left vacant by the ones who had been saved. His arms stayed wrapped around her body as they parted from the hug, terrified he did let go she’d disappear again. “Yeah I’m fine. They shot me with some weird ass gun but I’m assumin’ they’re special bullets ‘cause they don’t leave a mark.” Both him and Kace were unmarked when they landed in the station. His t-shirt didn’t even have a hole where the bullet entered. He smiled a little as he thumb ran over her cheekbone, his eyes locked onto his. They needed to get out of there though. Mikey nodded in response to her comment. His hands moved from her waist to her hands, locking his fingers in hers. Kace. Fuck. “Wait two seconds. I gotta find someone.” Before dashing off to find Kace he quickly put his hands back around Mab’s waist pulling her in for another hug. “I’ll be right back.” Breaking away from Mab caused an ache in his heart, but he couldn’t leave Kace behind without saying goodbye. He rushed off back towards the seating area. “Kace!” Within a few seconds he saw Kace sitting down, “Dude. Mab’s here to save me. She managed to find some spell to take me back but I’ll find Kit. I’ll tell him you’re here.” The sound of hooves could be faintly heard in the room. “I gotta go but it won’t be long til you’re out too.” He threw his arms around Kace, giving him a firm hug, “Thanks for makin’ these past few months barely.” He let out a quiet chuckle, as the emotions started to take over. Reluctantly he broke away from Kace, heading straight back to Mab was waiting for him. “Yeah we gotta hurry. The riders are on their way.” He took hold of Mab’s hand, closing his eyes as she recited the spell. The sound of the rush in the waiting room as the Ghostriders arrived faded away and the next minute he was lying next to Mab on her bed, his fingers still interlocked with hers. There was someone else in the room too, who excused himself for some reason. Mikey wasn’t paying attention to the warlock though, only Mab. He broke out in a huge smile, “There’s no words to describe how thankful I am you came for me.” He turned on his side, his hand sliding out of Mab’s. He draped one arm over Mab, tugging her closer as he hugged. “Thank you.” He whispered softly in her ear. His feelings for her had been up in the air since the moment he was kidnapped by the Ghostriders, but now they’d been solidified. Goddamn it. MAB CARMELLO wrap with yours?

Mikey promised he was fine, that the bullets they used to shoot him hadn’t hurt him, but worry still bit hard as he drew out of her embrace. She could still feel the echo of his hands at her waist, tying the two of them together as he darted off amongst the rows of seats. There was no guarantee he would stay safe if they waited too long, no guarantee she would either. Those things weren’t gonna be happy when they came back and realised that someone else was trying to slip away under their noses. Tobi wasn’t gonna be happy either, but at least he wouldn’t kill the two of them.
His two seconds spun out, the hands of the invisible clock ticking away in her head. How long did she have before Tobi’s strength gave out and the cord she could feel connecting her back to the real world snapped? She’d bitched about his lack of magical skill before, but this was more than she’d thought he was capable of, more than she deserved in return for the way she’d treated him and Cassie.
Shifting her weight from foot to foot she watched Mikey talking to some other guy who was vaguely familiar at a distance. Someone he knew from Mystic Falls? A new friend he’d made in here. Either way she might’ve risked a passenger on the ride, but Tobi hadn’t said anything about bringing more than one person out and no matter who the guy was, she wasn’t risking getting Mikey out of here. Before he started back to her the sound of hoofbeats rang out in the concrete box of the waiting room, faint to start with, growing louder with every clatter.
”Whatever you do, don’t let go,” Mab told him hoarsely. She gripped his hand, feeling the reassuring beat of his pulse through her palm as she started the spell again. Tobi’s family knew their stuff, the spell worked. Gratitude filled her eyes as she managed to tear her eyes away from Mikey’s to look over his shoulder. Blood dripped from his nose, a side effect of using that much power. ”Thank you,” she croaked after him, unsure if he’d even hear it.
It would’ve felt like a dream, having Mikey back in her bed, but he was solid as he rolled onto his side and drew his hand out of hers to wrap his arm around her. She rolled into that touch, her throat thick with the relief that tore through her like a tidal wave. Warm beneath her hands as she wrapped her arms around him. Mab squeezed her eyes shut against the burn of tears as she tucked her head in against his chest. ”You’re welcome,” she whispered. ”I never could’ve left you there. I had a way in and I was gonna use it. If I couldn’t have got you out … I would’ve stayed.” Maybe there’d have been another way she could’ve torn an exit out of there, but either way she’d have been with him.
Her lips were close to his throat, her fingers curling into the ridges of muscle that lined his bag. Holding on in case she blinked and he was gone again, comfort sinking into her with every passing second that he stayed with him. Eventually he’d go again, back to his brother’s apartment, but this time she would remember just who’d taken up the other half of her bed for weeks. ”I’m so glad you’re safe.” The words whispered out, her voice threatening to quit. Emotions were always to be buried, but as she lingered in the hug, Mab felt them swirling under her skin, coalescing in her chest. She’d already lost a good man once, she’d never let it happen again. Ghost Riders, hunters, her own great-grandmother, she’d always stand between Mikey and any threat that would come for him.
