Even though it wasn’t their religious holiday, Raik and Remzi still celebrated Christamas in their own way. Their parents always made dinner, there would be a nice tree in the corner of the living room and after dinner the boys would open a few gifts from their parents. Raik would carefully pull the sellotape off, unwrapping the present carefully whereas Remzi went at it like a rabid animal, tearing the paper apart. Their mom didn’t want them to feel left out when they went back to school in the new year and all their friends would be talking about what toys they had for Christmas. Remzi and Raik also had something to show off to their friends. This year they wouldn’t be going to Detroit to see their parents, but Raik was sending a gift to them regardless. The gift tag would say it was from Raik and Remzi, but usually Raik was the one purchasing and wrapping the gift. The only thing Remzi did was sign the Christmas card, while asking Raik what date Christmas day was this year. With the gift and card in arm he headed over to Hannya’s apartment. He still didn’t understand why Ayla and Remzi continued to live there. The less he knew, the better. The place was like some halfway house for homeless supernaturals. Raik slid his key in the lock, pushing the door open. No sign of Hannya which was a relief. “Remzi. I’ve got mom and dad’s card here for you to sign.” He lingered in the kitchen, not wanting to take a step near the bedroom as who knew what lay beyond that door. Ayla stepped out of the bedroom. Raik went to speak, but the words jammed in his throat as he looked at her. His mind shot back to their evening together in his apartment. His arms wrapped around her, pulling her close to keep her safe from her nightmares. Her head slid underneath his chin as his head rested on top of hers. It was like two jigsaw pieces slotting together perfectly. He never intended to drift off to sleep, but once her body slipped into his he felt a sense of comfort he hadn’t felt in a long time. Every fibre in his body was drawn to her, desperately needing her, but his feelings for Ayla were forbidden. Something he kept reminding himself everyday. One slip of the tongue would ruin everything. He cleared his throat, finding his voice, pushing those forbidden thoughts from his mind. “Hey. I’m just looking for Remzi. Need him to sign our parent’s Christmas card and gift tag.” He placed them both down on the kitchen side. “You okay… you look kind of… sad.” He was praying for her and Remzi hadn’t had another argument. There was only so many times he could listen to her relay the arguments before he’d snap and tell her she was too good for Remzi. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ “I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU won’t go!” Ayla yelled, frowning deeply at Remzi. He threw his hands up, told her she wouldn’t fucking get it (in English), and slammed the door behind him. Ayla had been left alone since then, wondering why the hell she was in America when the only person she even remotely liked here was a man she could never have. He was the only thing that made sense to her in this awful country, and he was out of reach most of the time.
Except for that night.
Ayla sat in Remzi’s bedroom and hugged herself, whispering to Allah, begging for guidance. She kept trying. Even after Remzi’s other girlfriend attacked her, Ayla still asked Remzi to go to the Christmas Party with her. Well, she wanted him to take her there, and he was vehemently against the idea, but refused to explain why. He resorted to being rude and angry, and stomping out as though he were a child. All she wanted was to have a sweet moment at a Christmas party just like his parents had, but Remzi had no interest. Ayla wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold on.
When the door opened again, it wasn’t hope that flared in her chest; it was dread. But then she heard Raik’s voice, and everything settled again. It was more than hope━she was ecstatic to see him, but perhaps still looked a little let down as she left the bedroom, considering his comment. If anyone could make it better, though, it would be him.
“Remzi left.” She puffed, “Maybe he’ll yell at you for making him sign it, considering he seems to hate everything to do with Christmas.” Ayla rolled her eyes, then frowned up at Raik, her expression slowly softening the longer she looked at him. Finally, she explained,
“I asked him to go to the Christmas party with me. It’s being held in that hotel in the square━you know, the big, fancy one? He told me ‘no’ without hesitation or even an explanation. And then he walked out.” She rolled her eyes, irritated all over again.

There was only so much asshole behaviour from Remzi a person could tolerate before they gave up. Raik had been tolerating it for thirty six years. From the moment Remzi left the womb. But Raik was scared that Ayla was going to snap one day and board the first plane back to Turkey. He wouldn’t blame her for it either. The marriage she was promised to Remzi was going to be anything but perfect. More like an awful terrible car crash. Remzi wasn’t designed to slip in a suit, walk down the aisle and devote his life to one woman. Raik glanced down at the card for a moment, shrugging a little at Ayla’s comment. The easy solution was to find a pen and sign it on Remzi’s behalf. A careless scribble across the card would suffice. “Hates Christmas?” He looked back up at Ayla, frowning a little. He’d never known Remzi to hate Christmas. The holiday was geared towards over indulging in everything, which Remzi loved. Ayla cleared up his confusion with her next comment though. The hotel on the square. The fancy one. The hotel where Raik was murdered. His last living memory before being dragged off to the purgatory was clutching at his throat, desperately trying to gasp for air but his hands slipping from his skin due to the blood pouring out. “We, um… we don’t get along with the owner.” But of course Remzi didn’t take a few minutes to explain that to Ayla. Why would he? It wasn’t like she was his future wife. “Let’s go out. Me and you.” He was about to blur the lines even further between him and Ayla. “I’ll head back to my apartment and get changed. I’ll dig out a nice suit and we’ll head to a fancy bar outside of town.” He was tired of drinking at the same bars in Mystic Falls. “I’ll be back shortly. No rush though, take your time.” He understood how stressed out women could get if they were placed under strict time limits to get ready. He left the gift and card in the kitchen, heading back to his own apartment. On his way back he sent a text to Remzi to say he needed to sign the tag and card, but left out the part where he had just invited Ayla out for a drink with him. Just the two of them. Raik was back at Hannya’s apartment within an hour. He’d already knocked back two shots of whisky for some Dutch courage. Ayla was ready and waiting for him in the kitchen.. He was taken back when he stepped into the room to see her standing there looking breathtakingly beautiful. “Wow.” He spoke without thinking, uttering the first word that came into his mind. Frantically he searched his mind for something else to say to her, trying to cover up the fact he had just laid eyes on the most perfect woman he’d ever seen. “You look amazing.” It wasn’t like Remzi was showering Ayla with compliments. He paid for their cab to a small cocktail bar twenty minutes outside of Mystic Falls. It was dimly lit inside with a few booths dotted around. There was a band setting up on the stage. He handed his bank card over to the bartender, starting a tab for them. Once they’d got their first drink they found a quiet booth in the corner. Raik slipped into the seat opposite Ayla. “I’m sorry Remzi wouldn’t take you to the Christmas party. It’s partly my fault… it’s where I was killed. Room 204 to be precise.” He lifted his glass, taking a large sip of his drink. He wasn’t ready to explain every single detail of that awful night to Ayla. Not yet. Each time he thought about it he’d feel himself being swallowed by the darkness, knowing there was peace waiting for him on the other side but he was dragged away from that. But if he never came back then he wouldn’t have had the chance to be sitting across from an incredible woman, having a drink in a cosy bar. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ SOMETIMES SHE FELT LIKE A DAMSEL IN DISTRESS when she was with Raik; as though she constantly had a problem for him to solve. She was worried he thought she was annoying, or that he’d eventually think she was (like Remzi). Every time he soothed her and solved her issues, though, she was reassured he wouldn’t be. Raik was always happy to see her━happy to help. Sometimes she thought he was like that with everyone━but most times she didn’t want to think that.
Finally, someone gave her a reasonable excuse. “Oh.” Ayla mumbled, considering. “Why wouldn’t he just… say that?” Ayla supposed it didn’t matter now━because she had Raik.
And Raik always knew what would make her feel better.
“Really?!” Ayla practically squealed. She rushed forward and squeezed him in a hug, then bounced back like she couldn’t contain her excitement. “Okay! Yes━sounds good!” She stammered somewhat, like she couldn’t figure out what to say.
Ayla (luckily) already had an outfit picked out, so all she had to do was fuss over her makeup for the entire time it took Raik to go home, change, and come back.
She forced herself away from the mirror in the end, resigning herself to the kitchen, where she wandered around in quick darts. She would move to something that might need her attention (or just keep her busy), realize she couldn’t risk ruining her outfit, then move to something else that she also couldn’t do. Eventually, after only a few minutes of torture, Raik walked back into the apartment.
The moment she met his eyes, Ayla wondered if the emotion she saw in them was just a projection of what she felt. But then he spoke, and her chest fluttered, face heating so bad that she had to look away or she might explode. “Thank you.” She croaked, slowly finding the courage to find his gaze again. “So… do you.” Maybe that was the wrong thing to say to a man, but she couldn’t come up with anything else.
Finally, they were at a small bar decorated with pretty lights, and enough of a subtle holiday theme to keep her happy. She thanked Raik for her drink and slid into the booth opposite him, taking a small sip from her glass. Even if Remzi had taken her to that Christmas party, she didn’t think she’d have half as much fun as she was already having.
When Raik explained that their problem with the hotel was more than just the owner, Ayla’s eyes went wide. “Oh… oh no.” She frowned, sadness flooding her expression. “I’m so sorry.” It made sense why Remzi was so against the idea, then━and why he wouldn’t talk about it. Ayla had a million questions, but from the look on his face, she realized he probably didn’t want to talk about it, either.
“Well, we didn’t go there, so we won’t let it bother us tonight, right?” She hoped that didn’t sound apathetic━she wanted to make Raik feel better, happy. To have a good time with her tonight.
“Is this what you usually drink?” She asked, lifting her glass and inspecting it. “What is your favourite drink? We should find my favourite tonight. And then dance, maybe!” She suggested cheerily, though she became sheepish almost immediately after it left her mouth. She hoped the band was going to play good music.

Raik knew why Remzi wouldn’t just explain that to Ayla. He couldn’t be bothered to listen to Ayla’s questions, it would have driven him insane. Why did they hate the owners? What happened? It was better for him to be coy about the situation. Thankfully the conversation about the hotel was dropped and the pair headed out to a bar. It was impossible to hide his smile when Ayla told him he looked amazing too. It should have been Remzi taking Ayla out for drinks. It should have been him telling Ayla she was beautiful and ordering her nice cocktails. Raik had stepped up to the role though, not that he was complaining. He loved spending time with Ayla. When their mom told them there was a woman on her way from Turkey to meet Remzi he never imagined he’d end up so close with her. This time Raik was the one to bring up the hotel, explaining to Ayla why they hate the owners. It was more than a disagreement over the room price. The pair of them snuck into Raik’s bedroom and murdered him while he was unable to fend for himself. He knew as soon as he felt the cold blade travel across his neck he was going to die. He was so fucked up he couldn’t even thread together a plea for them not to kill him. He wasn’t ready to die. There was so much more he wanted to do with his life. But it wasn’t just that, he didn’t want to leave behind Remzi, not when he was roaming around town with no humanity. Raik was terrified that he was the only one who could bring him back and if he was dead then Remzi would be lost forever. “It’s fine. We just tend to avoid the place.” It was surprising Remzi hadn’t walked into the hotel and torn the owners apart with his bare hands. Raik broke into a smile when she insisted the night wasn’t going to be ruined. “No. We’re gonna have a great night.” The best night ever. Raik was sure of that because it was impossible not to have a great night with Ayla. He adored spending time with just her. He peered down into his drink for a second. “No.” He said with a chuckle, “I tried to order something you’d like. I think it’s called The Bramble. British I think. I like the blackberry.” He pulled the blackberry out of his drink and placed it in his mouth. “My favourite cocktail is probably a Bloody Mary. Don’t you have a favourite drink already? I’d say we could try every cocktail on the menu but I think we’d both vomit before we got to the end, especially if we started dancing.” The mention of dancing brought forward memories of their dance in the club during the Halloween event. Their faces were only inches apart, as they swayed to the music. There was a high chance that if the alarm hadn’t sounded Raik would have taken his chances and kissed Ayla. His fingers would have travelled up her neck, curled around her hair gently and pulled her closer to him. He thought about that evening a lot. Even though it was a risky game he was about to play, he was taking hold of Ayla’s hand as soon as the music started. The band started out with something upbeat with a jazzy ring to it. His fingers interlocked with hers as he lifted his hand up in the air to twirl her around a few times. Raik tugged her toward him, his hands gliding around her waist, resting on her lower back. Remzi was missing out by not being the one to have his arms wrapped around Ayla’s body, staring into her eyes as the music played in the background. “I’m glad I asked you to come out with me tonight.” It was easy to forget they were in a crowded bar. Whenever he was with Ayla she was the only person he saw. They could be thrown into the middle of New York city, surrounded by thousands of people and his eyes would only find her. Everything else around her just bled away. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ WITH ALL SAD AND POTENTIALLY night-ruining conversations behind them, they were free to discuss their cocktails, which were somewhat of a foreign subject to Ayla. She didn’t really drink━never had━but America was a land full of new experiences and opportunities.
Most (if not all) of which she wanted to share with Raik.
Ayla looked down at the fruity cocktail and then back up at Raik, her smile widening. She watched, mesmerized, as he plucked a blackberry from his drink and put it on his tongue, her smile faltering slightly. A stray thought slipped into her mind: never before had she ever wanted to be a piece of fruit so badly.
Ayla pushed it away and instead focused on what he was saying, clearing her throat as the smile crept back onto her face. “What is in a ‘Bloody Mary’?” She asked, brows drawing together slightly, “It sounds… strange.” A little scary, actually, but there was no way Raik could drink something that was too weird. She just couldn’t see it. And, unlike his brother, he was predictable in some ways. She liked that about him.
Ayla laughed as he went on, nodding in agreement, and, despite the topic, she was beaming. “I think you’re right.” She grinned into her cup as she took another sip, and, within a few minutes, they were up and dancing to the music the band began to play.
She was smiling so much that her cheeks began to ache, but she loved it. Ayla laughed as Raik twirled her around, and when he tugged her close, she didn’t resist. Why would she? Raik was one of the only men to ever make her feel comfortable with this kind of closeness, and as much as she probably should have kept space between them, she didn’t want to. And what was this experience in America if not to indulge? That’s what this country was for, wasn’t it? Hedonism and over-indulgence?
“I’m glad you did, too.” Ayla smiled up at Raik, her arms looped around his shoulders. They were so close. Not as close as they’d been on Halloween, but…
“We should try more cocktails!” Ayla said suddenly, in part because she needed a distraction, but, in the back of her mind, she knew that if she had a few more drinks, she wouldn’t be so scared to be close to him.
A few drinks turned into a lot. After an hour or two, Ayla had lost count of how many drinks she’d had, especially because she gulped down mouthfuls as they danced. Every so often, she’d break away to rush back to the table and down another portion, then rush back to the dance floor to wrap herself around Raik again. The music grew more upbeat as the night went on, and while most of the patrons seemed to know the words, Ayla could only say that she knew about every fifth song. It didn’t matter, though, because she could find the beat and shake her hips and━even while hanging off of Raik━she felt like one of those women from the Belly Dancing Workout videos her mom used to watch. She felt good. Carefree, confident, happy. It wasn’t often she felt this way, especially since coming to America, but…
“I always feel this way… with you.” Ayla called to Raik over the music━not as loud as it was in the club, but still too loud for regular conversation. Even if she hadn’t been speaking in Turkish, she still wouldn’t have been embarrassed by what she said. She had too much alcohol in her system.
Ayla pulled back an inch to focus on his dark eyes, and she smiled, then a laugh bubbled up from her chest as she realized she was talking like Raik was in her head. Sometimes, it felt like he was━like she didn’t need to talk for him to understand. “I mean…” She laughed again, “That I feel happy! Like I can be… myself! With no judgement!” Which was more than she could say when she was with Remzi. Not that he spent much time with her.
She brushed up against him as she danced, and Ayla swallowed hard, trying not to think of how it felt to have his body against hers the morning she woke up wrapped around him. Too late. Her eyes found his again, and she didn’t pull her hips away, but her voice emerged instead, as if it could be some sort of barrier between them. “I really liked… that last one. The pink one.” The Pink Lemonade cocktail with raspberry liqueur, but the name escaped her while she was staring at Raik, her gaze falling to his lips before jumping back up again. She was so close, and the arm around his shoulder had shifted, the crook of her elbow curled around the back of his neck. Their chests were pressed together (among other things), and Ayla wanted it to be one more.
