Owning a cat wasn’t actually that bad. The whole process was made a hundred percent easier because Lottie could communicate with Nacho. When she told her not to scratch the couch, she listened. There was one downside though, Lottie could no longer live in the hotel with her furry friend. Her mom said it was a blessing in disguise though because maybe it was time Lottie moved out of the hotel and found her own place. The sale on the house had gone through and her mom finally managed to sell the salon, so Lottie wasn’t exactly strapped for cash. Her new apartment was okay. A small two bed place in Mystic Falls, in the apartment block where everyone seemed to live. The lack of space made it feel less lonely, but if she had to admit her loneliness was cured by Nacho. It was someone to talk to when she arrived home from work and she was more than happy to listen to Lottie’s problems. Within five minutes of bringing her home from the vet’s Nacho knew everything about Lottie. Her failed marriage, her sisters, her favourite colour. After a few weeks Nacho was free to leave the apartment too, to roam Mystic Falls, so when she came home she would also tell Lottie all about her day. It usually consisted of what gardens she peed in and what cats she’d beaten up. Lottie had no idea cats had such personalities. They both share a hatred of birds too. Lottie spent hours getting ready for the Christmas party at the Grey Haven hotel, sending Destiny countless photos of her outfit choices. Nacho constantly reminded Lottie she had her to thank for meeting Destiny and Lottie was thankful. It was sooo nice having a friend in town. Sure, she had Catia and Lucky but Catia was barely around and Lucky… well Lucky was Lucky. If they weren’t sisters Lottie probably wouldn’t like Lucky. Finally she settled on an outfit with Nacho’s stamp of approval. It never occurred to her to bring a date (not that she had one in mine) until she realised most people were paired up. Even Lucky had a man with her. Lottie clung onto her four glass of champagne as she surveyed the crowd, looking for Destiny knowing she would make her feel better about not bringing a date. She sprung into action once she spotted her friend near the bar. “Des!” She called out as she broke through the crowd with a smile, “Thank God I found you. Everyone here has a date with them! Even my sister has a date which I’ve never witnessed before in my entire life… I feel like an idiot” She carefully placed her empty glass down on the bar, contemplating getting herself a fifth drink. Fifth drink Lottie could be messy though. DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ DESTINY HAD GOTTEN SEPARATED FROM GREY A LITTLE while ago, and it honestly felt like the longest stretch of time in her life. She kept glancing over her shoulder mid-conversation, finding him, smiling (even if he didn’t make eye contact), and then going another few minutes before checking in again. Were they a little too reliant on each other? Maybe. But after everything they’d gone through, it was excusable, wasn’t it?
Speaking of, she’d felt on edge this entire night. The whole time, she expected something awful to happen━like JJ or Leah bursting through the doors to throw a wrench in the whole thing. Anything that might fuck up the peace she and Grey had recently found once more… until one of them fucked up again.
Destiny slipped away from the employees she’d invited from the Daily, excusing herself to the bar to get another drink. She also hoped she’d be able to brush up against Grey again because she’d spotted him over here, but, by the time she got there, he was gone. She swallowed the disappointment and ordered another drink, feeling like a child for missing him when he was just across the room. But this would be another Christmas without their child, and he was the only thing she had left. Of course she wanted to keep him close.
As the bartender handed her another glass of champagne, Destiny turned and huffed out a breath, preparing herself for another round of small talk. Was she a bitch, or had she just turned into a hermit? Her social battery was dying, but she had to put on a brave face, just like Grey did━and she’d have to do it for Grey.
Her eyes jumped up as she heard her name, and she smiled (genuinely) when she saw Lottie, giving her a little wave. Despite being super busy before the party, she’d given a ton of her attention to helping Lottie with her outfit choices, which totally paid off. “Hey! You look so good! This dress is even hotter in person,” She beamed, giving Lottie a quick hug ‘hello.’
But then Lottie started rambling about a date, and Destiny was sucked out of her own world and into Lottie’s. There was still a crisis here, but it was one Des could handle.
“Your sister?” She furrowed her brow, “Isn’t Catia, like, half-married anyway? I haven’t even seen her tonight.” Her and her new-but-not man. Destiny glanced around like she’d be able to see Catia in the hordes of people, then looked back at Lottie. “Don’t feel like an idiot! There’s plenty of single people here,” She shifted a little closer to Lottie to line up their eyes, and pointed (semi-inconspicuously) through the crowd, “See that super tall, dirty-blond dude? He wanted a plus-one but showed up alone. Ooh, and that guy?” She shifted to someone else on the other side of the open floor. “Tall, but not as tall, dark hair, beard? His whole family is super rich. And he’s not boring to talk to, either.” A lot of these rich heirs seemed like they’d never been let outside to socialize, which was horrible when you had to sit through a conversation with them. But Lottie was… well, she was really sweet, so many she’d get along with some of them.

It felt like it had been forever since Lottie had put on makeup and slipped into a pretty dress. The last time she’d probably did it was for one of her and Freddie’s date nights. She’d always made an effort, even if they were just going out to their usual restaurant for a quick meal. Freddie always commented on how beautiful she was and she was foolish enough to believe the words coming from his mouth. Just thinking about it made her want to throw her new dress in the trash and collapse onto the floor sobbing. Her self esteem was practically gone by this point too. He’d completely destroyed it but Destiny had very firmly, but kindly, told Lottie she shouldn’t let any man make her feel that way. She was apparently some strong empowered woman who could survive this heartbreak. It was tough for her to believe Destiny’s words, but she tried her best. It was easy for Des to say though. She was a strong empowered woman. Lottie felt like a fake. Nacho warned her if she collapsed into a sobbing heap though she’d peed all over her clothes because a storm would arrive in town and Nacho hated thunder. By now Lottie had grown accustomed to the sound of thunder roaring through the sky. Both of her sisters were at the party, yet Des was the one to make Lottie feel instantly better. She melted into Destiny’s arms, feeling so flattered. ‘Thank you!” In that moment Lottie felt like some hot single lady who was ready to eat the men up. It was never her intention to direct the conversation towards herself, but she had a knack for doing that. She was so engrossed in Lottie’s world at times that her surroundings weren’t real. Her problems were shared with everyone, whether they asked or not. “Ohhh! No. I’m about my other sister, Lucky. I don’t even know why she’s here to be honest.” Lottie hadn’t shared with Destiny what Lucky had told her about Grey killing innocent people. It was fake news anyway. “Is there?” She was so blinded by couples that she failed to spot the men who were alone. Her eyes followed Destiny’s hand as she pointed out various single men. It was a toss up between the tall hulk and the shorter rich man. “I don’t think his family would like me.” Lottie said as she gestured towards the rich man, “I’m not rich.” Already she was picturing herself meeting this stranger’s family even though she’d yet to say hello to him. She turned her attention to the tall man, “He seems nice though… but what do I say to him? Oh God, I think I need another drink if I'm gonna approach this very tall, nice looking man.” She grabbed another glass of champagne off the waiter who was walking past, taking a small sip. She wanted to knock it back in one, like people did in the movies, but she’d throw up everywhere. DESTINY BACCARI

━ i'll stay awake at night with just my skin and bones ━ OH, RIGHT, THE OTHER SISTER. THE BITCHY one she’d heard about. “She’s here?” Destiny asked, furrowing her brow at Lottie. Why the hell would she wanna show up to this? Other than bothering Grey and both her sisters, of course. “Me either.” Destiny agreed, but their shared focus quickly turned to the men at the party. The single ones, specifically.
“Pfft,” Destiny waved away Lottie’s worries, “You’re hot and you’re nice to talk to. That’s all that really matters.” She reassured her, though Lottie seemed more focused on Super-Tall-Dirty-Blond instead. “Say anything! Honestly, he’s just gonna be happy to have a pretty girl talking to him━and if the conversation sucks, you can always just excuse yourself and come back to me! But all you have to do is say hi, wish him a Merry Christmas, something like that!” It wasn’t like hers and Grey’s first conversation had been under normal circumstances, so Destiny only had so much advice to offer. “C’mon! I’ll introduce you guys.” And do half of the hard work for her.
Destiny looped her arm with Lottie’s and pulled her over, though she gave Lottie enough time to pull away and shut it down if she really wanted to.
“Hi, Colin!” She smiled, “Merry Christmas! How’re you?” She watched as his eyes lingered on Lottie for just a moment too long before he greeted Destiny, and then she motioned to Lottie. “Oh! Have you met Lottie? She works in the building with Grey. Colin, Lottie; Lottie, Colin.” She beamed. “Lottie just adopted a cat from the shelter I work for,” Okay, they were at the vet office, but it was true enough. She turned to talk to Lottie, “Colin just donated quite a bit to the shelter, which is super nice, especially after that cat did not wanna get adopted,” Destiny laughed, trailing off for Colin to finish the story about his ‘good deed’ turning bad when that cat attacked him. “Ooh, I see someone I have to say hi to. Tell her the cat story!” Destiny beamed as she slipped away, shuffling back to the bar to watch them from afar━and staying nearby, though━enough so Lottie could find her again if need be.

Destiny’s reaction to Lottie’s comment about Lucky being there brought a smile to her face. Even Destiny was confused. The place was full of happiness and joy, everything Lucky hated. The whole party was based on a holiday she hated. So, it was a mystery why her sister felt the need to drag herself there. Probably something to do with Mitch or maybe she was hoping to ruin Catia and Cam’s relationship. The compliment had Lottie swallowing back the tears. She couldn’t recall the last time someone had said something so nice to her. There was no time for tears though as Destiny was already getting together a plan for Lottie to approach the tall good looking man. She could feel the heat rinsing to her cheeks and she hadn’t even approached the man. “That’d be great!” She beamed at Destiny’s suggestion. One less thing for her to do. Lottie kept a wide grin on her face as they approached Colin, who glanced over at her, his eyes meeting hers briefly. Hopefully her face hadn’t flushed a shade of pink. “Hey Colin.” She extended her hand for Colin to shake, who did so but also planted a kiss on the back of her hand. Okay, Lottie was in love with this man already. Destiny peddled the conversation between the pair before peeling herself away because she’d apparently seen someone she needed to say hello to. Lottie didn’t care though, she was already drowning in Colin’s handsome looks. “Sometimes I think cats are old cranky men who have been reincarnated.” Colin laughed at her joke, causing Lottie to laugh along with him. She listened intently as he started to tell her his cat story, the whole time she was just admiring his amazingly chiselled cheeky bones and beautiful eyes. DESTINY BACCARI - end!
