Christmas had started to mean something to him again over the past few years, with Teddy and Phoebe in his life. It was no longer just another day in the calendar, but one he looked forward to. He had people in his life to exchange gifts with rather than fleeting acquaintances. Teddy was the first to warm him up to the idea of Christmas again, then Phoebe arrived back in his life, reminding him that the holiday was a special day when they were children. It was that one day a year where they were just a normal family. Any talk of the coven was banned around the dining table, courtesy of their mom. But now the holiday has gone back to another day in the calendar. He hadn’t bothered buying gifts for Teddy or Phoebe, nor would he be seeing either of them on the day. At least not by choice. However, the party at the Grey Haven hotel did catch his eye. It would be an opportunity to seek out some victims. He might have been without his emotions, but he wasn’t going to risk looking like a loser turning up without a date. The place seemed a little bit fancy too. A damn sight fancier than the bar, so he needed to find someone classy to accompany him. His first thought was Penny, but he dismissed that idea within a second. He didn’t want to spend the evening with someone who he once cared about and risk having her triggering something inside of him. He managed to find a student in the bar though, whose name began with a H or maybe a Y. Lawrence didn’t make a mental note of it because by the end of the night she’d be dead. After an hour he managed to temporarily shake off his date, compelling her head to the bar, buy them a bottle and come back in fifteen minutes. Lawrence was keen to scout out the crowd, see if he could find anyone better than the girl he’d brought with him. His attention fell on a man who was standing near the buffet who was wearing a bright green jacket covered in gingerbread men, while filling his plate ridiculously high with food. It was impressive to see him balance it so well back towards a table, where he sat down with Penny. Damn, he was doing so well avoiding her. His eyes shot off towards the front door of the hotel. There was his escape, but he didn’t take the chance. Instead he headed over to where Penny was sitting. A choice he regretted once he reached their table as his eyes fell on her, taking in how beautiful she looked. “Evening.” He approached the end of their table, with a tight smile on his face. Lawrence managed to tear his gaze away from her though, turning to the other man. “They’ve just restocked the buffet table with new food… why don’t you go and check it out?” Lawrence wasn’t even trying to be stubble by telling this man to fuck off. —---------- “That’s my queue to leave… for now.” Tobi got to his feet, brushing the crumbs off his hands with the napkin on the table, “Dude, if you wanted a moment with my woman all you needed to do is ask.” He flashed Penny a smirk. She wasn’t his woman, far from it, but he’d always enjoyed stirring the pot a little. A little something to spark jealousy in the other man. He grabbed his plate of food off the table and headed back towards the buffet. —---------- Lawrence’s eyes bore into the gingerbread jacket wearing asshole as he got up to leave. Lawrence dropped down into the chair across from Penny. “There’s a town full of men and you’re hooking with him?” He let out a cold laugh before taking a sip of wine. “Your standards have slipped a little since me.” Fuck, why had he told his date to come back in fifteen minutes. Now would have been the perfect time for her to show up so Lawrence could show her off to Penny. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY DIDN’T HAVE A LOT OF OPTIONS FOR the Christmas party in town, which might have been sad, but she actually didn’t care. She didn’t want there to be options. She would’ve liked it if Lawrence wasn’t an emotionless prick, but that wasn’t really something she could control. At least he’d brought her back.
And normally, she would’ve avoided this shit like the plague, but it’d been a long time since she was in a room full of sentient people, and it wasn’t like she had to talk to all of them. Or any of them, actually.
In any case, she brought Tobi, because he was apparently in Mystic Falls now. He was attractive enough, but he did stupid shit like wearing that jacket to something like this, and while she admired his boldness, it made them stick out like a sore thumb. Which didn’t help when she wasn’t looking to interact with absolutely everybody who came up to compliment (or just comment on) his jacket.
Penny retrieved an acceptable amount of food for herself, then came back to the table to sit, where Tobi got up from holding their table to get his own. She felt eyes on her as he returned, which wasn’t out of the ordinary for tonight (considering his outfit), but as her gaze flicked up instinctively, she realized it was Lawrence staring at her. She wasn’t nervous, more annoyed that she’d probably have to knock him on his ass and make a scene. He looked away, though, and she hoped that emotionlessness of his would keep him from coming over.
She was wrong.
And, unfortunately, Tobi didn’t even attempt to stay. “Your woman doesn’t want a moment alone with━” She cut herself off as Tobi smirked and left her anyway.
Penny stiffened as Lawrence sat, her back straightening as she sized him up from across the table. She thought it was funny that he thought she’d jumped from him to Tobi━like she wasn’t still reeling from all the emotions that’d bubbled up (only to be shut down) by him bringing her back━but she wasn’t going to correct him. Maybe it didn’t matter (because he didn’t feel anything), but she didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of thinking she was pining. Which would just be in his head, obviously. “I’d say they’ve soared since the little smudge that was you.” Penny sneered, then leaned back in her chair as though she could be at all comfortable right now.
“Tobi might not dress great, but the d*ck is far superior.” She grinned like she was holding back a laugh. “And anyway, at least I came here with a date. You’re looking a little lonely tonight.” And she wouldn’t go home with Lawrence if he asked. She would not.

It was a relief to let his mask slip once his date walked off. He’d spent the past hour being nice to her, making it seemed like he was genuinely interested in her. As soon as she turned her back the fake smile dropped from his face giving his muscles a break. It was difficult for him to engage in a conversation with anyone for too long because he didn’t give a shit about what the other person was saying. He wasn’t actually expecting to see Penny at the party. The whole evening was her idea of a nightmare, but there she was looking so damn radiant. Not only had she come to the party, she’d brought a date with her too. A date that wasn’t Lawrence. Since she’d come back he’d been convincing himself he didn’t want anything to do with Penny but his mind kept turning over the image of her running into the museum, looking pleased to see him. It was a moment which could have triggered an emotion in him, but he fought against it. Lawrence was determined to ride the emotionless train for as long as possible. The way in which the asshole referred to Penny as his woman rattled him. Lawrence would deal with him later. It rattled him even more when he realised Penny didn’t even want him there, but he couldn’t blame her. He wasn’t exactly great company at the moment. Nonetheless, he took the seat across from her. Lawrence chuckled, shaking his head, “If you say so but we both know you’re wrong.” Lawrence wasn’t delusional enough to think he was a fucking Vogue model, but he was a damn sight better looking than her date. For starters, his dress sense was better. He’d even dragged out a suit for the event. A smile crept across his face at her comment as he let out a real laugh. “I guess that’s the only thing that matters.” Who cared if the guy was walking around in the ugliest jacket in history, so long as he knew how to please a woman. “I have a date. She’s at the bar getting a drink. Great dress sense and I’ll be testing later whether the fuck is far superior which I’m imagining it will be because I won’t be worried she’s gonna set fire to me part way through.” He set the glass back down on the table, eyes locked with Penny’s as he grinned. No, he didn’t want to think about her in that way, but it was impossible not to. Thoughts of ripping the dress from her body entered his mind, throwing her down on the table that currently separated them, trailing kisses down her body. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY SCOFFED AS LAWRENCE ATTEMPTED to make himself feel better, lifting her glass to her lips to take a sip. “Whatever helps you sleep at night,” She hummed lightly, as though she couldn’t care less about what he said. And even if she did, she was going to bury those fucking feelings as deep as they could possibly go. It was better now than when he’d really hurt her.
“It is.” Penny said decidedly, but not firm, so as to not show it’d hit a nerve. It hadn’t, not really. She’d decided a long time ago that nothing would matter other than carnal connection, and she refused to change her mind for some fucking vampire who was less than a quarter her age.
She didn’t care what he was doing, either, but a sharpness whipped through her chest, like a burning bolt of lightning, when he mentioned the date he’d brought along━and all the things he wanted to do to her. Penny remembered when that was her━when Lawrence’s affections were trained on her, when he liked the danger and strength she possessed, and he might’ve taken her to a back room at this stupid party to remind her of that. She felt another hot burn in her belly, perhaps a better sensation this time, but the after-effects were still the same. Lawrence was here with someone else, and so was she.
“Don’t lie; you loved the risk━back when you had emotions, of course. Now you’re not worth anything to anyone.” She sipped her drink again, like she didn’t care, like this wasn’t eating her alive. “She’ll be just as disappointed as I was.”

Christmas should have been a happy time of year. Lawrence should have been at home, in Teddy’s apartment, decorating the place and getting Julian excited for Santa. None of that would happen this year. Lawrence was the real life Grinch, looking to suck away everyone else’s happiness with cruel words and equally cruel actions. It wasn’t like he was experiencing any kind of happiness by being a piece of shit to Penny, he was just delivering some truths. There was absolutely no filter with him. Whatever popped into his mind he said it outloud, completely unbothered if it upset someone else. The only thing which had caused a stir of something was the fact she’d also brought a date with her. Two could play at that game. Penny’s words failed to strike a chord because Phoebe and Teddy were working tirelessly to bring Lawrence back. He meant something to them, even if they meant nothing to him currently. “Fearing for my life every time you… you know. Yeah it was kinda exciting at times and I know you felt the same.” She was sitting there with a face made of stone, but Lawrence had witnessed the emotion on her face when she came running into the museum. “If you were so disappointed then you wouldn’t have continued sleeping with me for over a year… but whatever helps you sleep at night.” Out of the corner of his eye he spotted her date walking over towards them. “That’s my cue to leave. If you get bored of this asshole then you have my number.” He slowly got to his feet, glancing down at Penny. The harsh look on his face fading briefly, “You look beautiful by the way.” He pulled his eyes away from Penny, meeting the eyes of her date who was standing by the table. “You look like a fucking keener in that jacket.” He said to the man as he brushed past him. It was tempting to shoulder barge the asshole across the room, but Lawrence didn’t want to make a scene. For Penny’s sake. PENNY BARTLETT - the end!
