Lawrence had tried to forget about Penny. Store her away in that part of his brain he never accessed, but he couldn’t shake her off, even though he tried so furiously to do so. The task Winter had set him hung over him, weighing him down. She was out there somewhere, waiting to be saved by him, but he didn’t know how. All Winter had told him that he needed to remember Penny, but he did and yet nothing happened. Once Penny’s name was revealed the memories came trickling in, slowly but steady. The first thing he remembered was her stealing his Goddamn ring and blaming him for it, but then he remembered how they brushed it aside, occasionally laughing about it, both of them knowing she had it stored away somewhere. He grew accustomed to living as a night creature, in fact he started to enjoy it because it gave him the chance to see Penny. Their little coffee meets up flooded in next, then the nights they spent together in bed after meeting for coffee. They’d slipped into a routine, but neither of them acknowledge that. They just let it happen. Lawrence would meet Penny in the coffee shop around midnight, they would chat then head back to her apartment. As soon as the door closed he would slip his arms around her waist, picking her up and pinning her against the wall. Whatever they had going on was passionate and addictive. Sometimes he’d lie in her bed, her legs dangled over his with his hand lying on her bare back and he’d wish he could stay for a little longer, but the sun was about to make an appearance. Hannya had slipped into Penny’s place, wiping away Lawrence’s emotions in the process, leaving behind nothing but an empty numb shell. At first he’d say she’d done him a favour, but he swiftly remembered how boring it was to lack emotions. Nothing brought him joy. Every day was the same. He was just existing at this point, but the boredom wasn’t enough to have him flip the switch. Why the fuck would he want to feel guilty after draining a human? Perhaps Penny needed more people to remember her. The only people he thought might remember her was the staff at the museum, her name was still on her office door afterall. Lawrence spotted a security guard as soon as he entered the museum. “Hey buddy.” He rushed over towards the man, “I need your help… well… someone else does. Anyway, I need you to remember a woman called Penny Bartlett. She works here, on the fourth floor. She’s a curator.” Whatever the fuck that meant. She had explained it to him a few times, but it sounded like she just played with fossils. “There’s no employee here by the name Penny Bartlett. Sorry.” Lawrence sighed heavily. Fuck, why could this man just remember Penny so Lawrence could go back to living his life? “There is. She’s got blonde hair, five eight, always looks unhappy… She has hazel eyes, quite dazzling sometimes. A lovely smile too, in those rare moments she decides to smile.” Without realising it there was a small smile on his own face as he thought about Penny’s lips curving into a sharp smile whenever he made a poor joke, followed by her laugh. “She wants you to think she’s a cold bitch, but she’s not. Underneath it all she’s warm and endearing… she’s remarkable and… well she’s pretty fucking special so I’m struggling believe that you can’t remember her.” He jabbed his finger into the security guard’s left shoulder, knocking him back a few steps. “She’s someone who deserves to be remembered!” There it was. The emotion was flickering deep below the surface. Lawrence inhaled, holding his breath as if it was holding in the emotions. He refused to let the door open and the feelings faded away. The front door of the museum flew open, causing Lawrence and the security guard to turn their heads. Penny. She was there, in the flesh. He pressed his lips together tightly, a vacant look on his face as his eyes locked with hers. He turned to the security guard, “Good job buddy. You remembered her.” He reached over, giving the man a light pat on the back. PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ PENNY HAD BEEN SITTING IN “HER” SEAT, STARING at her hands, when she heard his voice. She felt a glimmer of something flicker through her chest, and when she looked up, there was a crumb of bright light floating a few feet in front of her.
‘... a woman called Penny Bartlett. She works here, on the fourth floor. She’s a curator.’
Penny’s brows furrowed. She sat up and looked around, but nobody seemed to notice it. Was she finally going crazy? Could she? Or was she just supposed to rot in here?
‘A lovely smile too, in those rare moments she decides to smile…’
She couldn’t help but let one stretch at her lips. She’d recognized the voice━Lawrence━and she didn’t know who the hell he was talking to, but it didn’t matter. He’d done it. He’d remembered her━actually, Winter was the one who really did it. Penny would owe her a lot after this. A pay raise, at the very least.
‘... Underneath it all she’s warm and endearing… she’s remarkable and… well she’s pretty fucking special, so I’m struggling to believe that you can’t remember her…’
Tears began to form in her eyes, and she jumped up as her stomach did, watching the light begin to expand, becoming big enough for her to walk through. He thought she deserved to be remembered. Penny couldn’t see why, but it was enough that Lawrence thought so. She rushed into the blinding light, finding herself lost for a moment, before the museum doors were beneath her hands, and she was pushing them open.
She didn’t know or care what he’d said to the security guard, only that he was there━that he’d finally gotten her out. Penny threw her arms around Lawrence and pulled him into her chest, hugging him as tightly as she possibly could. “You remembered me.” Penny nearly whimpered, feeling her heart swim from all the things he’d said━she allowed herself a moment of softness, at least. Especially after everything she’d been through.
“Thank you.” She sniffled, turning her head to press her lips to his cheek, then the edge of his mouth. “Thank you.” She said again, still holding him close.

Lawrence had failed to pinpoint how he felt about Penny before she was taken. It was confusing because she was so damn difficult to read. After leaving hers and heading back to Teddy’s apartment he would sink into his own bed and think about her. Maybe there was something brewing beneath the surface for the pair? Course he was too scared to even bring this topic up with her because she’d snap his neck or set fire to him. He’d seen a softer side of Penny but she was still fucking terrifying. Now he didn’t need to pinpoint his emotions though because it was a blank state. Whatever he felt about Penny before had vanished. Or at least he thought it had. Seeing her run into the museum, tears forming in her eyes as she sprinted towards him caused his heart to drop. His first instinct should have been to run towards her, sweep her up off the ground and kiss her so damn hard, but he remained still. Then her arms slipped around him and he felt his body stiffened. Reluctantly he raised his arms, placing them lightly around her body. He exchanged glances with the security guard, who had no idea what the fuck was going on. But she wasn’t done with him. Penny’s lips pressed against his cheek, then his mouth. Lawrence kissed her for a second before pulling back. What the hell was he doing kissing her back? He slipped away from her grip, stepping back as he did so. “No I didn’t save you. This man did… um.” He twisted his head, reading the man’s name tag, “Terry saved you.” The least she could do was promote Terry to head of security. The security guard started to mutter, “Sorry I don’t think I did. This is my second shift here.” Lawrence sighed heavily, puffing out as he did so, “The fuck Terry? Why didn’t you mention this when I came in here? You know what…” In a blur he snapped the man’s neck, “And tonight was your last shift here.” He turned his attention from the dead body back to Penny, “Anyway. Welcome back.” With a smile on his face he gestured to their surroundings. Thank fuck his job here was done. Would it have been too far to ask Penny for Winter’s number? PENNY BARTLETT

━ for a dreamer, night's the only time of day ━ SHE WASN’T EXPECTING LAWRENCE TO PULL BACK so soon. For one (stupid) second, she thought that maybe he wanted to look at her face, to see that smile he called lovely, but she was wrong. He was awkwardly trying to shove her gratitude on some random security guard she’d never seen, and Penny, with furrowed brows, looked at Terry, then back to Lawrence.
He was out of her arms completely, and Penny stood there without any idea of what to do, only watching the scene unfold in front of her. She’d allowed herself to be vulnerable for one minute with him, and this was what she got. It reminded her of why she didn’t do shit like this.
“Lawrence!” Penny hissed as the man’s body dropped. It was the middle of the fucking day, there were people here. “What the fuck is wrong with you?” Her eyes turned golden and snake-like, and as she glared at him, silver, almost iridescent scales appeared, ghost-like on her skin, mirroring the time in the club when she’d first shown him a glimpse. She should’ve ended it then. She never should’ve gone to the office, or even back to the club after stealing his ring.
“Did you lose your last few remaining brain cells while I was gone?” Penny growled, a low rumble of fire starting deep in her chest. This was her place of work, and he’d dropped someone in the middle of it.

Under normal circumstances Lawrence would have been a little scared of Penny right now, as she hissed at him and flashed her eyes at him, but he felt nothing. Not even a slight flick of fear as she looked at him like she was going to rip his head clean off his shoulders. “He was irritating me.” He replied with a shrug. Lawrence knew his asshole attitude wasn’t what Penny was hoping to be greeted with when she returned. She actually gave him a genuine smile as she threw her arms around him. A month ago he would have swooped her off her feet and told her how much he’d missed her. He hadn’t got to the bottom of who had disappeared from his life, but he knew it was someone who meant something to him. Someone important. But all of that faded away thanks to Hannya and his sister. Now he didn’t care about anyone but himself. He was happy to burn every single bridge, which started with Teddy. The quicker he burned those bridges the easier his life would be. These people wouldn’t save him if they hated him. His lips curved into a smirk as Penny snapped at him again. “A lot has happened since you went on your little vacation. My sister and the demon I’ve been sleeping with got into a little bitch slapping fight and all ended in me turning my humanity off. So, growl at me all you want. In fact, set me on fire. I don’t care.” It was on the verge of his tongue to start talking about Winter, asking Penny for her number, but he held his words back. “Anyway. I’ve got things to do.” Without even looking back at Penny or the dead body, he scrolled out of the museum. PENNY BARTLETT - the end!
