Fuck this town. Fuck Tristan. Fuck Hector and that thing riding around in his brother still. Fuck reaping and Death himself. If things were as bad as they seemed to be getting in Mystic Falls then they were leaving town.
Damien didn’t bother heading for the front door this time – practically daring Tristan to swoop in and deal with the guy who was in a relationship with the sister he was determined to keep trapped her entire life every time he’d arrived that way – he just appeared in Aurora’s apartment instead. Considering what had happened when she’d done the same to his place, maybe he should’ve been a little more wary, but Aurora wasn’t him, she was open and honest and at all too much risk from what was going on here.
Cory had been yapping about people vanishing for weeks, asking him about some woman he’d gotten himself involved with, acting like he should’ve noticed something about folks disappearing. Like he hadn’t had enough problems of his own. After Aurora had found Leah’s underwear in his apartment, he’d kicked Leah out. Maybe he felt a little bad about it, but she had said it’d just be days when she’d arrived and in the end it had been far longer than that. By now she might’ve been tucked up tight with Hannya and the asshole he was pretty sure she’d fallen for, might’ve being the operative word because Hector had put an end to any other problems he might’ve paid attention to.
’Don’t come to my club’ had sounded an awful lot like ’don’t be with Aurora’. If he’d left it there Damien would’ve had no trouble brushing it off, but Hector had gone and found some non-de Martel trouble – the sort that put him in murderous rages and was apparently catching.
Maybe reapers couldn’t catch it, the same way they probably couldn’t vanish to wherever it was this friend of Cory’s had gone, but he hadn’t taken any chances. The clothes he’d been wearing tossed, a scalding hot shower, a thorough examination of his body afterwards like there’d be some black spot on him that was proof he’d caught whatever shit was causing Hector to lose his fucking mind. Like him Aurora was a vampire, which might’ve meant she could catch it and if what had happened with Leah had proved anything, it was that he didn’t want to lose her.
A quick turn proved she wasn’t in the bedroom he’d jumped into. Damien headed for the door, his heart still thumping heavy in his chest as he tore out into the hallway. No matter what was happening with her brother, she probably wouldn’t wanna run from him long term, but staying here was too risky now. They could head back to the beach, sip cocktails (and from the locals in Aurora’s case) until the heat was off here, worst case scenario they could hole up in the bunker, seal themselves off from the world and Tristan. Whatever happened Sonny would be fine – well, as fine as he’d been since that son of a bitch demon had started using him as a glove puppet.
”Aurora? Baby? You here?” Damien wove through the familiar apartment, listening out for some sign of Aurora, or her brother (sometimes it felt as though Aurora saw him in every shadow). He reached the living room, breathing a sigh of relief when she finally emerged from somewhere. As soon as she was close enough he was reaching for her, settling his hands on her arms to draw her in. ”We’ve got a problem. I need you to pack your bags, alright? We can’t stay here anymore.” He’d count all of those problems off on his fingers if he had to talk her into it, but Damien hoped he didn’t. Some looked at Aurora and saw nothing but a broken monster, a woman who had no hope of controlling her own mind, he didn’t. Aurora was intelligent and shrewd and loved fiercely enough that every time she was hurt it cracked something inside of her.

All had been forgiven, eventually. It took countless apologies from Damien until she decided she was finally ready to forgive him. It wasn’t just the apologies though. Aurora had gone out of her way to find this Leah woman and corner her. Aurora wasn’t foolish enough to believe she could kill a reaper with her bare hands but she’d sure deliver a lot of damage with them. There was no need for such violence though. Leah explained everything. It involved a baby vampire and a demon. The whole thing was messy but it was a plausible explanation. One that she digested over a few days before realising that maybe she was too quick to jump to conclusions, Damien had proven to her time and time again that he loved her and only her. They were truly infatuated with each other. Despite being alive for over a thousand years without Damien present she couldn’t imagine her life without him. But as always her past plagued her. Those dark thoughts gnawing away at her that it was all just a fantasy. Thankfully she didn’t act too irrational and ran to Tristan to tell him everything. Within five minutes a hit would have been ordered on Damien using The Stirx. Most of them would have been marched towards their death but there was a slim chance they would have succeeded. Then she would have been left with no boyfriend, an angry brother and probably surrounded by four padded walls wearing a custom made straight jacket. Then once the dust had settled and she’d processed what happened she’d crumble. Not long after Leah was sent packing, despite having nowhere to go but Aurora didn’t care about that. She wasn’t shacking up with Damien, especially due to her reputation in the club. The lack of respect Leah had for herself was outstanding and somewhat questionable. Aurora was tempted to slip her a number for a therapist because she sure bloody well needed one. Everything was back in order though, just how Aurora liked it. Leah was gone and Tristan was weirdly leaving her alone. He may have been pursuing Cory, the dead end lead she gave him when he quizzed her about a man in her life. She needed to throw someone on the bus so when she thought about Damien her mind jumped to his co-workers. Hopefully Tristan hadn’t torn Cory’s tongue out, but if he had then so be it. Anything to keep her and Damien happily together. There was never any warning prior to when Damien’s appeared in the apartment, but within seconds his aftershave wafted through the apartment alerting Aurora to his presence. This time she was in the bathroom towel drying her hair as he rushed through the place to find her. She emerged from the bathroom, a smile on her face but it soon faded as she tuned into the rapid heartbeat and sigh of relief. Something was wrong. “Darling.” She stepped out of the bathroom as he drew her closer. “Pack my bags? But why? Has Tristan done something?” Immediately she assumed the worst. He’d found everything about Damien and now she was going to be forced to run and abandon her brother. DAMIEN BECK

The last time Damien had spent more than a few months living everywhere he’d been twenty-two and the heat over the robberies they’d been committing had just started to rise. They hadn’t been foolish enough to start put and boil like lobsters until the Bureau tracked them down. Once they’d hit the road they hadn’t stopped until that thing in Sonny had changed everything. You didn’t get anchored to any one place as a reaper, you went wherever you were pulled and you didn’t bitch too much about it. It wasn’t a job where you could flip off the boss and spend days on end procrastinating, you just performed your duties within the natural order. Getting tethered here the way the group of them had been was unusual and miraculous.
Mystic Falls was a magnet for this insane shit. Wars between Heaven and Hell, hit lists that had purposefully targeted the town’s supernatural population, people being beamed up by aliens, or whatever the hell was meant to be happening to them these days – and worse, the virus that was now turning things here into mindless killers. It kept them busy, scooping up souls like crap out of a cat litter box (for a cat with serious digestive issues) that never ended up clean. By the time you dealt with what you thought was the last, more were already dropping. If it hadn’t been for Aurora Damien knew he would’ve gotten tired of it by now. Forget Crowley and whoever else had their hooks in his brother, he would’ve been dragging Sonny (and his dark passenger) halfway across the world by now. Aurora had been his miracle though.
A reaper with a heart was probably some sort of a liability. They were all meant to be good little machines – like Elias. He couldn’t imagine him rushing up to his girlfriend’s apartment (if anyone could actually tolerate him enough for that) and desperately begging them to leave town. His had plummeted at the state of Hector though. If something like that spread through town there wouldn’t be any humans left, there wouldn’t be any supernaturals left, especially once the hunters started to deal with the problem. The woman he loved would be gone and there was no place on earth that would be safe for her once she was infected.
She came out of the bathroom now, hair damp. Usually, he would’ve made the most of the situation, but not today. His hold on her was all about drawing her close, assuring himself she was alright for now, and encouraging her along. Damien shook his head, dark brows drawing together as he looked down at her. ”Not yet, but he will once he hears. He’ll make sure you leave town to get away from this, and I don’t know if I can follow if I don’t know where he’s taken you.” Maybe there was some sort of reaper radar and you could zone in on the people who meant something to you, but it had never worked when he was trying to track Sonny and he wasn’t take any chances.
Damien tugged at Aurora, trying to lead her towards her bedroom. If he couldn’t entirely get away from Mystic Falls, maybe he could take her back to the bunker back home. That place was built to survive a nuclear blast, surely it could handle a virus. ”Some sickness is going around town, infecting supernaturals. I just had to clean up after Hector because he’s lost his damn mind and he’s slaughtering people. You can’t stay here when that shit’s getting passed around like a plague. Just grab a few things, anything else you need I can come back and get it.” If Aurora pushed, he’d even drop some line to Tristan to tell the asshole he had to get moving soon, but right now his priority was her.

From the moment she saw Damien she knew something was off. He was worried about something. As always she feared Tristan was somehow involved. Her brother meant well, in his own bizarre way, but it was bloody draining for Aurora. Constantly having to be careful what she said or what she did in case he took it the wrong way. It was heartbreaking that she had to hide Damien from her brother because the only other option was for her to be bloody bold and introduce the pair. The mere thought of doing that caused a shiver to run down her spine. No wonder she felt so exhausted sometimes, living a double life. There was a frown on Aurora’s face as Damien spoke. “Your starting point would be every psychiatrist hospital within a hundred miles radius of Mystic Falls but last time he did have me imprisoned in Thailand… but do not worry darling. I have escaped every single institution.” There was a trace of a smile on her face, attempting to lighten the mood. If anything was to happen to her she believed Damien wouldn’t stop until he found her even if it took several months or years. He’d storm into every single hospital in the world in an attempt to find his girlfriend. So even though there was a threat hanging over them that Tristan may one day try and separate them she had faith he wouldn’t succeed. She followed Damien toward the bedroom, but it was obvious they weren’t about to jump into bed with each other. He was dragging her toward her wardrobe to pack her belongings so they could leave. “Wait… a sickness? But… vampires cannot get sick.” Perhaps Hector was just getting up to his old tricks. She lowered herself onto the bed slowly. “If I leave Tristan will find me within a matter of days… I cannot leave him. At least not yet.” She needed time to build up a story as to why she needed to leave town. It wasn’t one she could just planted in his mind over the space of an hour. DAMIEN BECK

Aurora was smart and resourceful and resilient, but unfortunately, so was her brother. So far, they seemed to have stayed one step ahead of him – through sheer luck or thanks to all the subterfuge and lies. Hiding away behind closed doors, curled together in the dark corners of the club until Tristan had started to put pressure on Hector. Maybe that part was for the best considering the state he’d found Hector in again. Bodies were falling too fast in this town and Damien was sure he could see some sort of a crash coming. Pressure had been building in his chest since he’d watched Hector turn a blind eye to the vicious truth – something was seriously screwed up with him. He’d thought back across all the other pick ups he’d performed lately. There’d been a savagery to them that wasn’t your usual Mystic Falls mayhem. This wasn’t just an influx of things feeding either. Every piece of the puzzle that had slotted into place in his head had convinced him of what seemed to be going on. Even if he was only half right on this it wasn’t a pretty picture. Bodies were gonna be littering the streets like cigarette butts soon and it didn’t look like Death was gonna do a damn thing about it. His natural order had probably whispered that this had to happen. It was easy to picture blood staining Aurora’s hands – she'd never been one of those veggie vamps to start with. She hadn’t been unhinged the way Hector had seemed to be either, but it just took a little enhancement of what was naturally there. That was what had happened to Sonny when the demon had infested him, wasn’t it? His brother had always been the wilder of the two of them, his brain focused more on the possibilities, calculating every possible risk (and still he’d ended up blind then, never again). ”Noted,” he promised, although his voice was dry. He would’ve laughed if that pressure of worry wasn’t still expanding in his gut. Getting out of some locked ward was a hell of a lot harder than trying to avoid something you couldn’t see. Germs probably hadn’t been something anyone believed in back when Aurora was human, but times changed and shit for twisted. Damien let out a long breath and tried for a smile back, but there wasn’t much that was gonna change his mood while he thought she was still in danger. It was better to run and wait for the dust to settle here and then slink back into town once things were clear.|
Heading for the bedroom, Damien figured he’d pack her things if he had to. There had to be a suitcase here, anything to throw some clothes into. If anything got left behind then he’d come back for it. He’d take the risk a thousand times over to keep her safe. ”That’s what they’re saying it is. Like the flu, only this isn’t gonna leave you sneezing and coughing.” Just tearing off heads or licking blood off the knife you pulled from some innocent girl’s back.
As Aurora sank down on the bed, he pulled open the closet doors and started pulling things out. He caught glimpses of items he recognised and grabbed for those first, offering Aurora a worried smile as he passed them to her. ”He’s not gonna have a clue where we are. If this gets as bad as I think it’s gonna, then he’s gonna have too much going on to think about where you are. If you want, we’ll leave him a note. Tell him you’re safe, but you can’t stay here.” He crouched in front of her, his hands settled light on her thighs. ”I don’t know how they’ve made this infectious, but it’s not infecting the humans. Baby, this is dangerous. You get that I just wanna take care of you, right?” She might not be able to see it right away, but he wasn’t like her brother, he wasn’t gonna lock her up in some ivory tower with strangers. This was about the two of them being together wherever they ended up running to.

Aurora’s concern grew when it was clear Damien wasn’t in the mood to make lighthearted jokes about her brother sending her off to Thailand. The monks were probably lying dead for days before anyone found them. It wasn’t like the place was often greeted by visitors. It was tucked away on a mountain, far far away from any civilization. Once she broke out she trekked through the wilderness until she found someone, compelling them to help her back to a city so she could catch the next flight to America. Tristan wouldn’t send her back to the send facility, he never did. Damien understood the problems she had with Tristan though because he was experiencing his own with Sonny. They’d both been unfortunate enough to be stuck with problematic siblings. It wasn’t simple enough to cut their loved ones out either. They were chained to their siblings for eternity, but it was best not to think about it. Aurora couldn’t abandon her brother, even though sometimes he deserved it for all he’d put her through. They’d made a promise a thousand years ago to be there for one another. Their devotion to one another rivalled the original family. But now Damien was asking her to leave Mystic Falls. Leave Tristan. She couldn’t. They would be running for eternity and by now Aurora was tired of running. She was desperate to settle down with Damien, to find somewhere they could call home. For now Mystic Falls was that. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a starter point. “Who is we? It sounds like a few vampires have been on a killing spree.” But Damien wasn’t accepting that. Aurora watched as he flung the wardrobe doors open, grabbing her clothes from inside and placing them down on the bed. At least he was choosing her best clothes, including the dress she wore when they first met. Everytime she pulled it from her wardrobe she’d smile, her mind recalling that evening. The start of a beautiful relationship. “A note would only infuriate him more.” He wasn’t going to accept that his little sister was safe somewhere. Her eyes followed Damien as he approached her, kneeling in front of her. “If there is an infection in town then I need to warn my brother. I would never forgive myself if I left and he became sick.” Tristan would likely have the same reaction as Aurora, claiming vampires can’t get sick. The chances are he wouldn’t even believe her, but she couldn’t pack her bags without telling him what was happening. DAMIEN BECK - wanna wrap with yours?

He wasn’t some blind little idiot on his first day on the job – he wasn’t Cory. Killing came with being a vampire most of the time. Usually it was just one little slip here or there, the guilt that would crush most people at the idea of hurting another deadening with their turning. Emotions were meant to be heightened, but with plenty of the vampires he’d met guilt didn’t seem like one of those emotions. They fed, sometimes they let their dinner walk away, sometimes they left the carcass behind like a stack of chicken bones for someone else to clean up.
Those stacks had been discarded more recently, and not just with fang marks on them, although Hector was currently near the top of the list with his body count. Something was wrong and right now Aurora didn’t seem to be able to see it. Or she didn’t want to. Like cats toying with mice, killing their prey was just in their nature.
Should he risk it and take Aurora with him to see the damage before he took her half a world away from here? Maybe she’d go with him for that, but with the way she was digging her heels in about leaving without the asshole she called her brother, she wouldn’t go with him again after that. ”Me and you,” Damien said hoarsely. ”It’s you I need to keep safe from this.” Ugh. If he was forced to he’d drag Hector out of here too, but he wasn’t coming with them. ”Baby, it’s more than that. More than them. I’ve seen it and I can’t let that happen to you too.” She might not care about it happening, especially not if it affected her in the same way it seemed to have Hector, but it would break something in him. Pushing her refusal aside he started to empty her closet into a bag. Anything that might get left behind he could come back for – including Tristan if things got that desperate. ”A phone call then. You can’t go and see him in person to tell him about this. If you do he’ll just try and get you out of here himself.” Damien looked up from the clothes he’d pressed into her hands. He moved close then, dropping to his knees, like pleading with her was going to change her mind. ”We can warn him, but as soon as you do, I need you to come with me, honey.”
A sick feeling clawed its way up his throat. How long would it be until whatever this was caught up to them? He could keep jumping them around the world, but if this was like the plague or the Spanish Flu thing that had killed his great grandparents back after the first world war it would find them all eventually. This wasn’t how this was supposed to end, not after he’d found Aurora and fallen in love for the first time. They were meant to escape from under her brother’s thumb eventually and have an eternity together, caught forever in each other’s gravity.
Sighing, he settled his hand at the back of her neck and drew her down into a kiss. It broke off with a sigh, his gaze lifting to meet hers as he drew back enough to see into the starry depths of her eyes. ”We’ll give it a couple of days. That’s enough time for you to clear things with Tristan. I can make some real plans and maybe this’ll start to ease.” Maybe things would get worse, but he wasn’t about to let the pessimism taint what was between the two of them. Rising up a little, Damien wrapped both arms around her, drawing Aurora in against him, pressing his lips to her temple. ”I love you and whatever happens, we’ll be together through it.” He’d give everything he had to make that happen, even if it pissed off the rest of the world. Sonny, or that thing in him, had seemed like they could always protect themselves, but he was always gonna try and do that for Aurora, throwing up a shield around her that he’d defend with his life (or what he had left of it after he’d signed it over to Death).
