As the months crept on, more reality started to set in for Raik. Remzi and Ayla were getting married and there was nothing that would stop them. At the start he thought maybe Ayla would back out or Remzi would ditch her, but neither of those things happened. Remzi was set on making their mom happy and Ayla was set on making a life for herself in America, even if that life involved an awful husband. Raik loved his brother, but he was hardly marriage material. By now Ayla saw that, surely? All Raik was left to do was watch from the sidelines, his heart aching in his chest. Soon they’d be dragged off to get their suit fitting. Then Raik would have to stand up in front of everyone at the wedding to deliver his best man speech. He’d have to lie about how happy he was for the married couple, telling everyone how they were a perfect match for one another. He’d also have to stand there and watch the pair kiss. It was something that plagued his mind most days. Maybe he’d turn away and casually look out the window so he didn’t have to witness it, but then he knew what came afterwards. A moment that would matter to Ayla, but definitely not to Remzi. Just another notch on the bedpost for him. It broke his heart a little further just thinking about it. Just like Ayla though, surely his mom knew Remzi and Ayla weren’t a good fit. She turned a blind eye to almost everything Remzi did, but deep down she must have known the truth. Remzi could barely keep down a job, what made her think he’d keep down a marriage? There was the question though, how the hell was it going to play out? Remzi forever in his 30s whilst Ayla ages, but their mom had no idea her youngest drowned a few years ago. Whatever. Raik needed to keep his nose of business for his own sake. There was a fleeting thought to download one of those dating apps, try and find someone to take his mind off Ayla. Instead of dragging himself down to The Ruby Slipper club after work, he dragged himself up to his apartment. Far away from liquor because all he was doing was drinking away his problems leaving him a raging hangover the following day. It was lonely sitting in his apartment though to the extent found himself missing living with Remzi. It was a rare thought, but one that was there. The sound of his buzzer pulled him away from making dinner. At first he checked his phone to see if anyone had messaged to say they were coming over, but nothing. No one enjoyed an unannounced visitor. He quickly washed his hands as the buzzer went for a second time. He tapped the button to release the main door downstairs before opening his own front door. He peered down the stairs to see Ayla rushing towards him, tears streaming down her face. “Ayla… has something happened” As soon as she reached him he threw his arms around her, bringing her in for a tight hug as he stroked her hair lightly. Tears started to prickly in his own eyes. “Come inside.” He took her by the hand, guiding them both towards the living room and to the couch. His hand remained locked with hers as they sat down and he placed his other hand over hers, stroking the back of her hand gently. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ AYLA JUST WANTED EVERYTHING TO GO SMOOTHLY. She wanted Remzi to at least pretend that he wanted this━no, she wanted him to want it. So what their parents matched them up? She wasn’t whining about it or getting her other boyfriend (not that she would ever have one) to nearly choke him to death. And she knew it wasn’t Remzi’s fault━he’d saved her━but he’d been moody ever since. It was almost as if he stilled missed Leah, as if she hadn’t been a burden on their lives and their relationship.
He would never commit to her, would he? Their wedding was still months away and he drew further from her with every passing moment.
Ayla worked up all her courage and confronted him about it, which, of course, led to Remzi trying to blow her off, waving his hands at her and walking away. Well, attempting to, anyway. Ayla rushed after him, demanding an answer, or some kind of acknowledgement about what they were facing as a couple, but Remzi gave her nothing.
She went to the only logical place she could think of━the only place where she felt safe and listened to. She went to Raik.
Ayla showed up unannounced, and while she knew it was bad manners, she knew Raik wouldn’t mind. Well, she hoped━he was sweet, and nice, and amazing, but she knew people only had a certain amount of energy. For some reason, she just liked to think he didn’t mind using it up on her. She knew she’d feel the same way if she were in his place.
She buzzed up, and then rushed down the hallway to find him standing there, a pinnacle of… perfection. Her lighthouse in a raging storm. Another wave of tears came, and she sobbed as she sagged into his chest, whimpering, “Yes.” As if that would explain everything. She had a million things to tell him, and yet she wished he would just hold her and let her remain silent for a while.
But she was the one who came here without calling first, and she owed him an explanation.
Raik led her to the couch, and Ayla lowered onto it beside him, squeezing his hand like she could draw energy from it. She shifted closer, wrapping one arm around his middle so she could cry into his shoulder again. Perhaps this wasn’t appropriate, but she couldn’t help it! He was the only one who seemed to truly care about her in this awful country. Well, Hector did, too, but he didn’t have the lifetime of practice of dealing with Remzi, and she didn’t immediately think of him as her safe place. Not like she did with Raik.
“I-It’s Remzi. It’s always a battle with him,” The words poured out in Turkish, and went along with her continuous blubbering. She couldn’t tell him about what happened with Leah━not yet, anyway━it would perhaps frighten him, and she didn’t want Raik to be too angry with his brother… or the woman who could get him killed. “I… I don’t think he even likes me, let alone wants to… to marry me.” She sniffled, “I don’t know what to do. I don’t want him to pretend, I don’t want to pretend, but I can’t even talk to him about it. He refuses to speak to me.” She was at a loss, but she didn’t know what Raik was supposed to do about it. It wouldn’t do the situation any good if he got involved━Ayla just wanted to talk to him.

It was ridiculous, but Raik’s life was simpler when he was in the military. Dragging injured soldiers from the battlefield while dodging bullets was easier than his life now in Mystic Falls. Every now and then his mom would ask him when he was going to get a real job, completely ignoring the fact Remzi had never worked a day in his life. It was always the way through. Their mom expected different things from her sons. She wanted Raik to become a successful doctor (which he had given up explaining was impossible), as for Remzi she just wanted him to stay alive. They’d both failed her. Sometimes his mom had a point though. Thirty-five, renting an apartment above a bar he worked at and no woman in his life. He was stagnating, but had no energy to do anything about it. It was borderline selfish considering he’d been given a second chance at life, but he was wasting it by falling in love with his brother’s fiancee. Pining after a woman who’d never be his. Kit had outwardly asked Raik if he was looking to steal his brother’s woman, to which he said no, but the thought was there occasionally. It was only a fleeting thought, knowing Ayla would never choose him. There was a smile on his face when he spotted Ayla coming through the door, but it faded when he realised she was crying. His heart sank as he embraced her, holding her closely. He closed his eyes briefly, wishing he could stand there all night with her in his arms, but cold was seeping in. As he sat down on the couch she moved closer to him, wrapping an arm around his waist. He opened his arm, placed a hand on her shoulder to pull her towards him so she could bury her face into his shoulder. There was a spike of anger when Ayla said it was about Remzi. He pressed his lips together as she continued. Sadly, there was truth in what she was saying. Raik knew Remzi didn’t want to marry Ayla. It was a level of commitment he’d never reach. Now he felt like he’d be forced between a rock and a hard place. Lie to Ayla to protect Remzi or tell her the truth. “Firstly, he does like you… what’s not to like about you?” Raik could list off all of Ayla’s amazing qualities in a heartbeat, although it would take him a while as there were so many of them. He’d struggle to find a single flaw with her. “Remzi struggles to show affection and sometimes it comes across wrong… he might seem like an asshole but there’s a good person somewhere in there.” He just couldn’t bring himself to tell her Remzi didn’t want to marry her and risk breaking her heart. “I can speak to him if you want?” Try to shake some sense into the idiot, even though Raik knew his words would be dismissed by Remzi. He continued to stroke her shoulder softly, his head tilted slightly towards hers as his beard brushed against the top of her head. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ WHAT WASN’T THERE TO LIKE ABOUT AYLA? She scoffed into his shoulder━she could think of a hundred things, and she was sure Remzi could think of a thousand. “Perhaps that I’m too clumsy, too nice to him, or that I won’t make a good wife…” Were these things Remzi would say, or her mother? “Most of all, that I’m not Leah.” Ayla sniffled as she pulled back to look into Raik’s eyes, finding him a lot closer than she thought he’d be. She didn’t think it was possible for him to be any more beautiful than he already was, but apparently, it was. He was gorgeous up close.
And he smelled so good.
Ayla shifted an inch or two away━though it killed her to do so━but her arms stayed around him. “He doesn’t struggle to show it when it’s about her.” She puffed. Somehow, she wasn’t jealous about the affection itself, more that it seemed so easy for Leah to obtain. “She attacked me the other day.” Ayla admitted quietly, her eyes falling. “She had a silver knife, which is just about the only thing that can kill me…” Somehow, it wasn’t hard to say to Raik. She trusted him with that information without even thinking about it. “And she was going to do it. Remzi stepped in at the last minute. And you might think that would bring us closer, but I feel it’s only driven us apart.” Not that they were ever close to begin with.
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” She said quickly, her eyes jumping to Raik’s, even though it was dangerous territory. She was worried about what he’d think more than anything else. “It didn’t happen very long ago. I was worried… that you would worry. But I’m okay.”
Did she want Raik to talk to Remzi about her? The darkest parts of her brain said yes, but for all of the wrong reasons. “I don’t know…” She sighed, “If you think it will help, but Remzi is stubborn.” But his brother, of all people, would be able to change his mind.
But did Ayla really want it to change?
She shifted a little closer, like she was worried about him noticing, but not worried enough. Ayla peered up into his eyes again, even though it was dangerous━even though she’d get lost in them. “I’m sorry for coming over unannounced. If you have something to do, then I can leave, but I was hoping…” Her smile turned sheepish, “You might have time to spend with me. Hang out.” She said the last part in English, and laughed nervously, her cheeks beginning to heat. She’d heard other people use it before, and hoped it would be casual enough to use now━so that it wouldn’t be strange.

His lips parted as he was about to interject. Yes, she could be a little clumsy sometimes, but that was part of who she was. She wasn’t too clumsy, but was she too nice to Remzi? Potentially, but so was Raik at times. One thing was certain though, she would make an excellent wife. But he stopped himself when she mentioned the last thing. She wasn’t Leah. As she pulled back, her eyes finding his, he melted a little on the inside. “Remzi is incredibly lucky to have you in his life, it’s just taking some time for him to realise that. And it’s a good thing you’re not Leah. You’re a million times better than Leah.” Raik struggled to see how Remzi could spend so much time with Leah, but also he held back from bad mouthing her too much. Raik had to remind himself that she helped to bring him back from the dead. It didn’t mean it had to like her though. His heart sank when she broke away from him, shuffling back slightly as she did so. His arms were itching to wrap back around her body, draw her close and never let go. Raik longed to show her the love and affection she deserved, not the cold shoulder Remzi had been giving her since she arrived. But he couldn’t. It wasn’t his place to do that. But with each passing minute they spent with each other he was struggling to keep a lid on his feelings for Ayla. Whenever they were together his emotions slipped into overdrive as he ached to be with her. The lid popped off though when she told him about what Leah had done. Rage surged his body as his hands curled up in fists. He’d never hit a woman before, but surely hitting Leah would be justified? There was one piece of saving grace though. Remzi had stopped Leah, which sadly surprised him. Raik couldn’t thread together a sentence in response to Ayla either. He was too busy focusing on not storming out of his apartment and over to Hannya’s place. Then Ayla apologised and he cracked as her gaze bounced back to him. “No. Don’t be sorry.” He exhaled slowly, his breathing shaky. “Course I’m worried, but I’m just glad you’re okay. I’m sorry you’re having to go through this.” There was no solution he could provide either. Remzi needed to sort Leah out. Raik smiled a little, nodding as he did so, “Very stubborn, but sometimes he listens to me.” But he couldn’t promise that Leah would listen to Remzi. That was a drama he didn’t want to involve himself in, but now they’d dragged Ayla into it he was willing to do so. Ayla closed the gap between the pair. Raik became aware of just how close she was sitting to him again. As he glanced down at her he took in every single detail on her face, trying to stop his eyes from landing on his lips for too long. Just a glance was all he needed. He started laughing. “I’d love to hang out with you.” In fact, she was the only person he wanted to hang out with. If he could spend twenty four hours a day with Ayla he would and he’d never grow bored of her. She was the gift that kept on giving. A radiant beam of sunshine, even though life was being particularly cruel to her at the moment. He finished up dinner, dishing her a plate of food up as well. The evening consisted of awful cheesy Turkish movies and lots of laughing. As it reached the early hours of the morning Raik offered his bed to Ayla and insisted on taking the couch which he could pull out into a double bed. It was the early hours of the morning when he felt someone fit into the space next to him. Without thinking he placed one arm around her, pulling her close to him. He peeled his eyes open, his vision adjusting to the darkness. “Ayla?” He couldn’t see her, but he knew it was her. Immediately he recognised her smell, her touch, the softness of her skin. ━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ WELL, SHE CERTAINLY HOPED SHE WAS BETTER than Leah, though Ayla wasn’t going to say that out loud, no matter how awful the woman was. She also wasn't going to ask how long it was going to take Remzi to realize that he was “lucky” to have her (as Raik said), not only because he didn’t know, but because Raik, of course, couldn’t answer that question━and Ayla didn’t want to sound like a whiny brat.
She felt the way his emotions shifted when she told him about Leah, and Ayla braced herself for his anger, but it never came. Instead, he told her not to apologize, and Ayla wished she could be in his arms again, or at least reach over to hold his hands. It wouldn’t be strange━she’d done it before━but she wouldn’t want to let go this time. Slowly, she tried to work up the courage to do it. “Thank you,” Ayla whispered, nodding slowly.
She smiled politely when she said he’d speak to Remzi, though she wasn’t sure if she really wanted that. Perhaps it would be better. Perhaps Raik would get through to him, but… was it bad that part of Ayla hoped he wouldn’t? Not because she wanted to go back to Turkey, but because she’d rather…
Her fingers curled into her palms as if to completely remove the temptation to touch him. No. It was a bad idea.
Somehow, though, it was okay if she just moved a little closer. Just a bit.
They spent the rest of the night sitting so close, watching the romance movies she’d gushed over with her mom and sister━one of the only ways they’d managed to bond. She liked sharing them with Raik, too━like she was letting him into another part of her life. They were silly and dramatic, though, and they laughed until her eyes felt heavy.
She wanted him to say he’d sleep in the bed with her. It was terrible, and she liked him so much because he’d never suggest something like that, but she hoped he’d say it. He didn’t, though, and she went to bed in one of his old t-shirts, the fabric draping down to her knees.
Ayla laid in the bed that smelled only of him, hugging his pillows to her face, burying herself in his scent. Somehow, it didn’t stop her dream. Leah and Remzi worked together in it, not just killing her, but dragging it out. Each took turns hurling insults at Ayla while they sliced her with a silver blade, torturing her, and only laughing as she pleaded with them. By the end, all she wanted was death.
She woke up with a jolt, her eyes scanning the dark room quickly. Where the hell was she? It only took half of a second for Raik’s scent to hit her senses again, and she was calmed somewhat━at least now aware of where she was.
It wasn’t enough, though. Ayla slipped out of bed and curled her arms around herself, wandering out to the couch. She found him easily in the dark, and barely hesitated before crawling onto the pull-out couch. All she wanted was to be enveloped by his scent again, but she needed to feel someone there with her━feel his heart beating beside her, and all the strength and protection she knew he could provide.
Thankfully, Raik didn’t protest, and only pulled her close. She slotted perfectly into his side, one arm wrapping around his chest, the other curling around his arm as her head rested on his shoulder. “I had… a nightmare,” She whispered, feeling like a child as she nestled into him. “Can I stay… with you?” He’d know what she meant, of course. And the question was futile, given how they were already wrapped around one another, but she asked anyway.
She fell asleep almost immediately, and slept through the night, never once worried about her safety.
When Ayla finally woke up, sunlight bled in through the windows, and as she slowly peeled her eyes open, she saw how Raik’s golden skin lit up under it. She was half on top of him now, the t-shirt he’d lent her up around her hips, feeling the skin on her thighs brushing against his. Her body heated suddenly, and she reached to try to pull the fabric down, though it didn’t do much to put a barrier between them.
“Raik?” She whispered, her hand sliding across his bare chest, feeling the taut muscle below her palm. She was so close to his face. All she had to do was lean in and she could…

He watched as Ayla trailed off into the bedroom once it was time to go to sleep. He mentally cursed himself for wanting to follow her, but he couldn’t. There needed to be some kind of barrier between the pair. Something to stop him from rolling onto his side, pressing his chest into her back and sliding his arm around her waist. If they shared a bed there would be nothing to stop them from accidentally shifting toward the other person. Nothing to stop Raik from feeling Ayla’s bare skin against his, her hair brushing across his face, his beard tickling her neck. As he drifted off to sleep he felt content that Ayla was safe inside his bedroom. She was far away from Leah. Nothing could get to her tonight, not without going through Raik. Raik wouldn’t go down without a fight either. Despite her safety it didn’t stop the nightmares from creeping into Ayla’s mind. “Of course. Come here sevgilim.” He said quietly, his mind not fully awake yet. His hand clasped around her shoulder, bringing her body closer to his. “You’re safe with me Ayla.” He mumbled as he started to fall back to sleep again. The sound of her voice woke him up. When his eyes peeled open again in the morning for a second he forgot Ayla had crawled into his bed the night before, twining her body around his. Her legs were now even further across his waist, her hand draped across his bare chest. He was lying there in his boxers and she was next to him in only a t-shirt and pants. The fabric had ridden up her body throughout the night, exposing her bottom half. He could feel the warmth of her inner thigh on his waist. Nonetheless, he didn’t spring out of bed putting distance between the pair. He turned his head to face her, with a smile on his face. His kept his eyes locked on hers, trying to not let them drift down to her mouth. “Morning.” He whispered. Remzi was the lucky one who had the chance to wake up to such a beautiful woman every morning, but he was an idiot and didn’t take the opportunity. He chose to wake up next to strangers most of the time. He brought his hand up, resting it on her waist. He was wondering if his hand trailed lower to the hem of the t-shirt then up inside would she stop him? His hands were itching to explore every part of her body, especially when he could feel her frame against his. What would happen if rolled over on top of her, pulling the t-shirt over her head to expose what was underneath. His mind would often jump to those kinds of images, then he’d feel guilty for even thinking of Ayla in that way. But it was pretty fucking difficult when he could feel the heat from her pelvis and her chest pressing against his side. He needed some kind of cold shower to rid himself of these urges. “I’ll make a coffee.” Reluctantly he pulled himself away from Ayla, climbing from the sofa bed. He glanced down at her, admiring just how perfect she looked lying there in his t-shirt on his sofa bed in his apartment. Raik turned away from Ayla, making his way into the kitchen to the sink. He turned the tap and proceeded to splash cold water on his face. AYLA KIRAZ - the end!
