The speck had turned into a pink splotch the moment he had put his hands beneath the flow of cold water. He’d heard the voices continue to rise and fall in the bar outside, like crashing waves, but there was a high whine beneath it. A violin string tightened too far, the bow across it a savage screech instead of a pure, sweet note. It vibrated in his bones, feeling as though it was all tightening around that part of him that had never been truly satisfied. As he had since Esther had first instructed him to keep his hands clean, Elijah bit down on that need and dabbed his hands dry. He was beyond giving in to such desires now, or at least he believed he had been.
Elijah frowned as he thumbed the car radio on to try and drown out the sound. It had dimmed as the body had dropped in the alleyway, but now it was reaching a crescendo again. He was better than this and had been for a thousand years. If it had been any of his siblings he would have spoken about picking themselves up, finding control, telling them that they could move past this, but he wasn’t sure if he was capable of drinking in his own advice. The man had deserved it after all.
He glanced down at the sleeve of his jacket as he drove back towards the apartment. Threads sprouting around the shoulder seam like the frayed edges of his temper. He had been one of the Tristan’s men, he had seen it in the man’s eyes as he’d realised just what a misstep he’d made. Why Tristan had sent one so young after him, he wasn’t sure, but it had been a mistake and when someone was sent in search of him that news would be carried back to the de Martels – a warning not to try again. Finding no relief in the sound Elijah flipped the radio off again. The air still carried with the tang of blood, no amount of dilution was going to hide it. The shirt would be tossed, a waste of fine tailoring. Perhaps he should have left the bill with the body.
By the time he reached the apartment building, Elijah’s mood had settled again. That vibration was still there, but no longer so discordant. He had done no wrong, this was about protecting those he loved, including the woman who was likely waiting for him up there. Elijah stripped his suit coat off as he entered the apartment, scowling as he caught sight of those cobweb like threads from the corner of his eye again.
”Tatia?” he called tightly, a note of strain in his voice as irritation bit deep again. They should have been far beyond this now, this town was supposed to be the safe haven his family had searched for centuries for. The de Martels should have been hiding beneath a rock still, cowed by the power of those who had made them. Had they gone soft in the years that they had spent here? Had love left them vulnerable the same way it had their mother? Elijah gritted his teeth against that feeling like he had been stripped bare for Tristan to take his shot. ”Have you noticed anybody paying too much attention to you of late?” He looked up as Tatia walked into the room, his expression growing cold and hard.

Graduation had come and gone and if she was honest, Tatia was still trying to figure out what she wanted to do with her newfound freedom. Some of her friends already knew what they wanted to do and they were following their dreams but Tatia wasn’t sure what that looked like for her. She never would have had any of these opportunities if things had worked out differently, before she died she would have been expected to be a wife and a mother and no one would have expected anything more from her. Now she had the chance to be whatever she wanted to be and even though she knew that she had an eternity ahead of her now considering that she was an Original and no longer had to be worried about being taken away from Elijah or anyone else that she cared about she knew that she wanted to try and get it right the first time if she could. She knew that she wanted to find a way to make a difference with her life, it was just a case of figuring out how best to do that. That day she had ended up spending some time with Stefan before heading to the apartment to see Elijah. She had known that he was going out earlier but there was a part of her that had thought that he would be home by now. As it was the apartment was empty when she got there so she tried his phone but there was no answer. Letting herself in, she decided to wait inside for Elijah to get back. One good thing about graduating was that she got to spend more time with Elijah and she wasn’t too sure what they would end up doing that day but she knew that it didn’t really matter as long as they got to spend some time together. The smell of blood reached Tatia’s nostrils even as she heard the door opening, turning from the fridge where she had been getting herself a drink while she waited and she instantly felt worried at Elijah’s tone. Something was wrong, that much was clear, but what it was she had no idea. “Hi, my love,” she said as made her way into the living room, her gaze fixed on Elijah as she approached. As he asked if she had noticed anyone paying too much attention to her lately, Tatia thought about it for a moment before shaking her head. “No, I haven’t. What’s this about, Elijah?” she asked, choosing her words carefully as she spoke. The look on Elijah’s face was one that she wasn’t used to seeing and it was enough to concern her. Normally when they were together Elijah was so happy and full of love but right now he seemed cold and distant and she didn’t know why. “I can smell the blood on you, is everything okay?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

A thousand years of believing that he was above all of this undone with a single revelation. Hearing from Tatia that he had been the one to kill her in the first place had torn open the doors that had held back his own monstrosity for all that time. Esther had closed them in his mind, encouraging him to believe himself better than the others. He was the one who would keep his hands clean, the one who would preach at his siblings about their horrific behaviour. The noble Original had just been too cowardly to face his demons and so he had projected them onto everybody else.
Now Elijah was sure that he could feel them again. Just killing the man and tossing his heart aside had not been enough this time. Tristan had his people following him around town, undoubtedly attempting to gather enough information so he could not only attempt to do the same with him – a sure fire failure without a white oak stake – but could use the people he loved against him. Threaten to kill them and you had an Original that was beginning to crumble enough to make mistakes. It galled him to say it, but perhaps Niklaus was right. They needed an army to defeat the de Martels for good … or a man angry enough to cut a bloody swathe through this town to cleanse it.
He’d tried to let the mood bleed away as he’d driven back to his apartment, but standing just inside the door with a tattered jacket in his hands, Elijah felt it creeping around the edges of his mind again. Wipe them all out, put an end to the problem, it was a simple equation, so why had he never seen this solution to it?
His gaze drifted up from his jacket as Tatia answered his call and appeared. Her voice had been a balm, even after the truth had stripped away any pretensions he had about who he was. Elijah frowned faintly at her before tossing aside the jacket he’d held, letting it fall over the back of the couch in a way he never usually would’ve left an item of clothing. Neatness was everything. ”I was followed,” he said tightly. One glance at his cuff had him cursing under his breath. The blood had literally been on his hands again. He had always warned his siblings that the de Martels would only drag them down, it looked as though he hadn’t been wrong.
Like the suit jacket, the shirt started to be stripped away. With brusque movements, he unbuttoned it, pulling it off hard enough in the end to have the seams tearing the same way his jacket had done. ”Tristan has been skulking around this town for too long. He finally grew bold enough to have one of his people get close to me.” Too close. It had been like a mouse daring to run too close to a cat. His paw had come down on the man and one problem was now rotting in an alleyway. ”I’m sure he’ll appreciate the gift that was left behind. His people can collect the pieces.” Clutching his shirt in one hand, he approached Tatia, studying her face with narrowed eyes. ”Are you sure you would have seen them? You’re friendly, approachable, they could have used any ruse to try and get their hands on you.” Elijah laid his on her now, the hand not clutching the shirt coming up to cup her jaw lightly, as though it would reveal Tristan’s fingerprints left all over her.

Tatia had learned a long time ago never to let her guard down completely in Mystic Falls. There was always something going on in the town, often something dangerous, and Tatia knew that she had plenty of people in her life that she cared about that she could lose now. She didn’t have to worry about Elijah or the majority of the Mikaelsons because they were Originals just like she now was but when it came to Lukas, Henrik, the Salvatores and the rest of her friends, it was a different matter entirely. She knew just how easily life could be taken away from a person, after all she had experienced it twice herself. The first was back when Elijah lost control and killed her and the second was when she volunteered to be a part of Niklaus’s ritual to free his werewolf side so that Elena could live. It was never easy and she knew that wasn’t going to change but it always made her grateful for the time she had with the people she cared about. When it came to those people, Tatia always tried to keep them safe. She could tell when something was wrong with them and she was getting that feeling about Elijah now. Ever since she had come back he had always been so meticulous in his appearance and just the way he had tossed his jacket aside wasn’t like him at all. There was something going on, she had known that from the way he looked at her when he saw her, but what it was causing it she really wasn’t sure. She could smell the blood on him when he was normally so careful with that kind of thing and she couldn’t deny that she was worried. As he said he was followed, Tatia frowned. “Are you okay?” she asked. She knew that physically he would be fine but emotionally and mentally were two very different things. “What happened, who was following you?” Whoever it was must have been out of their mind to try and follow Elijah but she got the feeling that there was more to it than that if the way he was acting was anything to go by. “What good would he think that would do him?” Tatia asked as she looked over at Elijah. She knew about his history with Tristan but Elijah was an Original, he couldn’t be killed and Tristan had to know that. Following Elijah was only going to result in someone getting hurt and Elijah’s words were enough to make her realise that that had already happened. “Elijah, you can’t go leaving bodies around town. You know that,” she said, really not sure what had gotten into him. They needed to blend in and avoid drawing attention to themselves, there were already enough people dying and disappearing around Mystic Falls without any of them adding to the body count. “Stefan taught me well when I came back and so did you. I know how to look after myself,” she assured him gently. “Besides, they can’t do anything more to me than they can do to you now so what good would it do them?” she asked. She had never seen Elijah like this before, she had seen him worried about her safety and that of others and she had seen how upset and angry he was when the angels took Henrik but this was something else entirely. He seemed almost paranoid and that wasn’t like him at all. As he took hold of her chin, Tatia brought her hand up to cover his. “No one has tried to get to me, Elijah. I promise. This isn’t like you, what’s all this about?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Paranoia was not a new feeling. Targets had been painted on their backs the moment that Esther had turned their children into something unnatural to protect them. Instead it had done the opposite. Being impervious to disease or violence wasn’t a blessing, nature would never allow it to be. Enemies had followed Mikael for years, all of them looking to bring the Mikaelsons down – with Tristan leading the charge. As he had a hundred other times he would try and slither away from the blame now. Had the Strix been ordered to follow him and feed back every move to their weasel boss? Undoubtedly. Elijah for the itch between his shoulder blades grow, his gaze twitching away from the cuff of his shirt to the windows, around the apartment as though he couldn’t rest. He’d killed the first of them but only time would tell just how many others Tristan had tasked with surveillance.
The thin line of his mouth twitched at Tatia’s asking after his well-being. She had always been caring that way, tender and self-less, giving everything of herself to people like himself who didn’t entirely deserve that sort of care. Putting everything aside for others left her vulnerable to the real monsters out there. ”Why wouldn’t I be?” he asked, his voice almost flat. Elijah hissed out a breath, fingers fumbling at the collar of his shirt, working his way down the chest without his usual grace. ”I was out on business. He thinks he can hide people here, that I won’t see them, but I’m not blind. I’ve seen the sort of people he surrounds himself with.” He’d known the man on sight, seeing Tristan in the too slick suit, the smug smile on his face that had twisted mockingly as he’d approached. For a moment as the heart had ceased beating in his hand he wondered if he could’ve been wrong, but then his blood had seemed to rush through him again. Certainty brought on a relief, a satisfaction he couldn’t remember feeling for a long time.
Elijah’s laugh was bitter, his fingers tightening in the shirt. It was ruined too, destined to be thrown aside like his patience had been. How long was he to take Tristan’s taunting? How long before his sister was back here blaming him for every ill that had found her overly long life. It would have been better for them all if she had perished, along with her brother, all those years before. ”He has always wanted to take my place,”[/n] Elijah muttered. ”Compelling them to believe that they were us twisted his mind somehow. Ever since he has wanted to stand where I do, to gather more power than we have. I believe he means to bring the entire family down. He cannot be allowed to harm Hope, Alice or Connor.” Anger swam through his veins again, drawing a hiss out of him.
Tatia’s warning about what he should know had the sound cutting off, his eyes going hard as he took another half step towards her. ”The only one to blame for the body was Tristan. He can pick up his own trash,” Elijah said quietly. Tossing the shirt aside, he reached for her, his fingers gentle for the moment, although only a short time ago they’d been tearing a beating heart from a man’s chest. ”It would take only a moment’s inattention for them to strike.” The muscles in his arm twitched as he pictured it. ”If he looks to harm me, who do you think he will come for first? Angering me is good enough for them. You do not think I’m capable of reading his mind? It is about him, about keeping us all safe. Do you not understand?” There was a tremor in his voice now, a strain to his body that had his fingers tightening faintly on her jaw despite the gentle touch of her hand on his.

Tatia had known Elijah for a long time and it had to be said that this was the first time she had seen him like this. Even in his human days he was so careful and gentle but something in him seemed to have changed and she would be lying if she said that she wasn’t worried. She could smell the blood on him and given that he’d said he was followed she knew that it didn’t really bode well. Right now the way he was acting reminded her more of Niklaus than it did the man who had been her partner for so long and she knew that she needed to get to the bottom of what was going on. “You’re not acting like yourself, Elijah,” Tatia said gently. That much was clear to her but she wasn’t so sure that he could see it. All she could do was watch as his fingers fumbled over the buttons of his shirt. Normally Elijah was so graceful but now his movements seemed erratic almost and it was enough to put her on edge. She studied him carefully as he spoke again, not sure whether he was being paranoid or whether he really had been followed by one of Tristan’s minions. “Are you sure it was one of his people?” she asked, trying to gauge whether he had taken the steps he usually did to be sure. Elijah wasn’t the kind of person who enjoyed taking the lives of others and she knew that he wouldn’t normally do so unless there was no other choice but this felt different somehow. “Had you seen the person with Tristan before?”She hadn’t been there when Elijah and his siblings had feared for their lives while Mikael was pursuing them but she had heard about what had happened with Tristan and the others. She couldn’t even begin to imagine what that must have been like for Elijah, turning someone and then having to compel that person into believing that they were him to lure Mikael away, but Elijah’s family wasn’t helpless and it would be foolish to think that they were. “He’ll never bring your family down and we won’t let him hurt the kids,” Tatia assured him, knowing that there was no way that was going to be allowed to happen. Hope was a Tribrid and the twins were hybrids, they were all strong in their own right and they had the full might of the Mikaelsons around them not to mention the friends they had made so she doubted that Tristan would be able to get anywhere near them if he tried but then again she didn’t know Tristan personally and if Elijah was this worried then she knew that there had to be a good reason for it. Tatia was surprised at the way Elijah’s eyes hardened as he moved closer to her. “We need to be careful, Elijah. This is our home,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. “Tell me where you left the body. I’ll take care of it,” she added, knowing that it would be much better than leaving it for anyone to find. As Elijah said that it would only take a moment’s distraction for them to strike, Tatia’s expression softened. “I know it would but they can’t kill me and I know how to fight. You really don’t need to worry about me,” she assured him gently. There was a part of her that found it sweet that he was still worried about her even now but she knew that this was something else entirely. This wasn’t the Elijah she knew, something was wrong. As Elijah’s fingers tightened on her jaw, Tatia moved to pull his hand away. “You know him better than most but if he is up to something then we’ll face it together. You don’t have to do this alone,” she promised, knowing that she would stand with him just like always and so would the rest of his family. “You’re not yourself, Elijah. There’s something wrong.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

”You mean I haven’t stood by and waited for him to try and take all of this from me?” Elijah asked coldly. Where Finn had been expected to one day take Mikael’s place and lead their people, he had expected to be the intelligent son, the cool headed advisor who could still wield a sword and his magic when necessary. Elijah scoffed, scattering the next button without care. It had been the same after he had been turned. The one mistake he had made in killing the woman he loved had been transformed into an educational moment. In the same way that Esther had manipulated Niklaus with magic to prevent his werewolf side from emerging, she had manipulated his mind. The logical son, always cool headed enough to see where his siblings were rushing into trouble. Still vicious enough to be able to deal with any threats coming their way. Noble in name only, still a monster beneath.
Threads tore, another button pinging away. His mouth pinched into a thin line, dark eyes narrowing at her as though he couldn’t believe she were questioning it. He was not a fool, the man had practically reeked of the de Martels. "Of course. What other reason would he have for following me.” A bitter laugh rolled out of Elijah as he shook his head, refusing to listen to that small voice in the back of his mind that said what if. ”They would not have allowed him to be seen with Tristan. He’s smarter than that. Everything he does it meant to blind us to what he’s really up to in this town.” Had Tristan even really been missing when Aurora had come to his apartment? It was all smoke and mirrors, meant to keep him reeling until they could make their final move.
Paranoia was starting to bleed into him. Elijah stiffened, refusing to glance at the window as though Tristan would be floating there, mocking him. His fingers were already trembling faintly until the strain of pulling at the fabric he’d wrapped around his hands. ”Some day he’ll find a way. We might see him coming, but there is no guarantee we’ll be able to stop him.” The thought left him twitching, anger boiling up again. He would not stand with the blood of his nieces and nephew on his hands the way he once had Tatia’s, knowing that it was his failure that had allowed the de Martels to get what they had always wanted.
The smile on Elijah’s lips was thin and sour. His family had been in this place long before the Founding families had decided to stake out their ground. They liked to claim ownership of this town, but if he chose the place could burn to the ground, blood running thick in the streets. ”As though anybody would notice another body here. You have seen it for yourself. The Sheriff will cover this up the same way she does all the others.” As though burying her head in the sand would stop the slaughter. The woman had no clue. Elijah tilted his head, gesturing vaguely at the window. ”Will you go and do his work for him?”
Tatia’s expression was softening, but that only boosted his temper. How could she not see the danger? ”How are you so blind?” he snapped. ”All I do is worry about you all and you still refuse to see the danger coming. We are always above it, always untouchable. We can’t even prevent Niklaus from burying his daggers in our backs.” Elijah’s expression only hardened as Tatia tried to pry his hand away. He let go, but only to grab for her wrist. ”There is nothing wrong. I can finally see what is really going on out there. You cannot. You’re blind. All of you are so blind. It infuriates me.” He hauled on her wrist, feeling his fingertips dig into her flesh. If she could not see sense he would shake it into her.

“That’s not what I mean, Elijah. You’re sounding paranoid,” Tatia said gently. She was so used to Elijah being calm and rational all the time, she knew that he wasn’t immune to feelings of worry or anger but he had learned how to keep the outside calm even when underneath he was seething. The fact that Elijah couldn’t even seem to see that he wasn’t acting like himself was a concern and Tatia knew that she needed to find a way to get through to him. “Tristan isn’t going to take anything from you, we won’t let him,” she assured him. Elijah wasn’t alone in any of this, he had her and he had his family. They were so much stronger together and Tatia knew that she wasn’t going to let Elijah stand alone. She had missed out on so much of his life but ever since they were reunited she had wanted to be there for him through everything and now she truly could be. It had taken her a while to decide that she wanted to become a vampire but now she’d had time to adjust and she was an Original so if it came to a fight then she could stand beside him as an equal but there was something telling her that there was more to it than that and she needed to get to the bottom of what was going on with Elijah. The way he tore at his clothing was enough to have Tatia reaching for his hands, urging him to stop. From the moment he’d returned home she had known that something was wrong but the more they talked the more certain of it she was becoming. “Are you certain he was following you?” Tatia asked as her eyes met Elijah’s. With the way he was being right now she wouldn’t be surprised if the man had simply been going about his day and Elijah had thought that he was being followed. “If that’s true then we need to find a way to outsmart him, killing people isn’t the way to do that.” Chances were that would only start a war for power and innocent lives might be lost in the crossfire. That was something that Tatia wanted to avoid and she knew that normally Elijah would too but he really wasn’t acting like himself right now so she wasn’t even sure that he would listen. As Elijah said that they might see Tristan coming but there was no guarantee that they would be able to stop him, Tatia shook her head. “We’ll find a way, Elijah. We have Henrik, Lukas and the kids who can all help with magic and we have allies here we can turn to. He won’t get his way.” Tatia knew that the Mikaelsons would stop at nothing to protect Hope, Connor and Alice and she felt the same way but they weren’t the only ones who would do everything to protect them. The kids had everyone at the Salvatore School on their side and they weren’t helpless either, Hope was a fully activated tribrid so Tatia wasn’t sure that she even could be killed and the twins were more than capable of protecting themselves as well so she knew they just had to believe that they would find a way to stop Tristan. “I know she will but that’s not the point, Elijah. We don’t leave bodies lying around for anyone to find, we’re better than that,” Tatia said even though she had a feeling that her words would only fall on deaf ears once more. “No, I’ll go and do your work for you,” she corrected. “There’s more than just Tristan in this town who can make life difficult for us, there are hunters too. We might find that we need allies in the future so it isn’t a good idea to go getting on the wrong side of people now,” she explained. She knew that they would be able to count on the Salvatores and the friends that Tatia had made in Mystic Falls if need be as well, so many of them had become family to her and she knew that they wouldn’t stand by and let the kids get hurt, but Elijah seemed to be so blinded by paranoia and hatred right now that he seemed to think that he had to deal with this alone and she wasn’t sure how to convince him otherwise. “You’re right, in the past Niklaus has betrayed you all but you know how much he has changed since becoming a father just like I do,” Tatia protested. Family meant everything to Niklaus now and Tatia wasn’t so sure that he would resort to daggering his family again, not after Henrik had freed them all from their coffins one by one. “You could be right, perhaps there is danger coming but if there is then we’ll all face it together.” That was something she was certain of but Elijah didn’t even seem to want to give them the chance. As his grip shifted to her wrist, Tatia refused to struggle against him as she once would have. Instead she stood still and took a deep breath. “Elijah, let go,” she said firmly, her gaze locked on his as she spoke. “You’re hurting me, this isn’t you.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

He was sounding paranoid? The bitter laugh rolled out of him as he shook his head. As if his family had been anything but paranoid for centuries. From the moment Esther had turned them they had been chased. Their own father’s sole goal had been to slaughter the monsters that had once been his children. The threats had come with an alarming regularity since, as though nature was throwing everything it possibly could at them. ”What is it they say? You aren’t paranoid if they really are out to get you?” Tristan and the others had been looking to do that from the moment they had recovered their memories. Like a bully looking to snatch a favoured toy from another child, Tristan had already taken the Strix from him, twisting what had held such promise into something worthless. ”Can’t you see that he already has?” Elijah asked, his brow furrowing. How much longer would it take for Tristan to bring the family to their knees? How long would it take the rest of the wolves to try and finish them off once he had?
”Yes,” Elijah bit out between gritted teeth. He stared down at his hands as Tatia took them, debating whether to tear himself free from her grip and her doubts both. ”I know when someone is tailing me. He was there for too long for it to just have bene a coincidence.” The flash of confusion in the man’s eyes as he’d hauled him off of the street had been nothing more than surprise that he had been poor enough at his job to be caught. ”What would have been better? Allowing him to follow me back here? Leading him right to the people I love?” It likely wouldn’t have taken much work to locate them in a town this size, but it still felt as though this had been a move made out of those protective instincts he’d always been wracked with. It had been his job to keep them all safe. How was that supposed to happen when he had been shackled for so long by Esther’s commands?
He had trusted Tatia to stand side by side with him from the moment she had come back into his life. She had asked him to turn her to leave her impervious to the harm that might take her from him again. His siblings were all ready to fight, but why should he draw more of them into this when he could handle it himself? Elijah shifted his weight, shaking his head over and over as though he could rattle the thought clear of his mind. ”I won’t have them become targets. The more we send up against him, the more that can be taken. Who knows how many he’s already targeted?” Hector perhaps. There had seemed no logical reason why he would cross paths with him again the way he had in New York.
”We were,” Elijah corrected Tatia as she tried to caution him on his behaviour. ”We cannot fight on our level. It doesn’t work.” For a thousand years they had tried that and time after time they had been dragged down into the dirt. Anger twisted his face as Tatia thrust away his decision, a sound tearing out from low in his throat. ”You will not touch it,” he ordered, a warning hand hovering in the air between them. ”They should be thanking me for clearing up a problem for them. They’ve done such a poor job of it themselves.” So much for the nightmares being kept in check. You only had to see how many ended up dead in this town to realise that they were fighting a losing battle.
All that he become certain of seemed to be slipping through his fingers. They were falling back into old patterns. Surely it was only a matter of time before Niklaus tried to blame him for his witches escaping from the basement he had locked them into. The dagger would find his back again then. Who knew when he would escape his coffin again. ”Not enough,” Elijah said coldly as Tatia sided with Niklaus. Had they mended their bridges, growing closer right under his nose? ”No. We won’t. We never do. I’m always the one getting my hands dirty, getting bloody for you all.” Elijah shuffled closer as she went still, his face lowering close to hers. His expression was a mask of anger, his lips peeling back from his teeth. ”If you would just listen, I wouldn’t have to hurt you. Why will you not let me do what I need to? Why am I in the wrong?” His eyes narrowed to dark glinting slits as he used his grip on Tatia’s wrist to throw her down on the couch. Hands shaking again, he wanted to rip this anger out of his flesh, to feel the same relief he had when the man’s body had crumpled to the floor.

Tatia really wished she knew what was going on with Elijah right now. He looked just like he always did but there was something missing, there was a coldness in his eyes that she had never seen before and when she looked at him it was like she was looking at a stranger. She knew that he still loved her, she could feel it despite everything else that he was saying, but it was like something in him had snapped and she desperately wanted to bring her Elijah back to the surface but she didn’t know how. “That’s true but the only reason you have to think that he’s out to get you is the fact you thought someone was following you. This is Tristan you’re talking about, I know you say he’s clever but don’t you think you would have seen more signs than that?” she asked, hoping to get through to him even though she knew deep down that it wouldn’t work. There was no talking to Elijah when he was like this it seemed, he didn’t seem to want to listen to anything that she had to say. That was another sign that he wasn’t himself, normally he would always listen and really consider what she had to say but this time it was like it didn’t matter. “Then tell me, Elijah. What has he taken from you?” she sighed. She knew that Tristan had taken the Strix from him but Elijah hadn’t been involved with them for a long time so for him to be acting like this, she knew that there had to be more to it than that. “He could have just been going the same way as you. Did he do anything to make you think otherwise?” Tatia asked. The man going in the same direction as Elijah wasn’t enough proof as far as she was concerned and under normal circumstances she was certain that Elijah would have seen that too. He had other ways at his disposal that didn’t involve killing and she knew that that was usually a last resort for Elijah. He didn’t like having blood on his hands if he could possibly help it but she knew that he wasn’t thinking straight right now. “Elijah, it isn’t exactly a secret that you live here and this place isn’t Fort Knox. If Tristan or someone working with him wanted to make a move here then there’s nothing to stop them,” she said gently. The Boarding House had been put into Ric’s name when she became a vampire so they would always have that level of protection since it had been in her name previously but Elijah and his family had never really had to worry about that. It would be so easy for someone to break in and do whatever they wanted, they didn’t need to go to so much trouble but it seemed that Elijah couldn’t see that. Tatia knew that for a long time Elijah had been alone, Niklaus had locked their family away in coffins in a misguided attempt to keep them all together and she knew that had taken a toll but he wasn’t on his own any longer. She had made a promise that she would always stand by Elijah and she knew that his family would stand by them too but he seemed determined not to let them. “I think if he’d targeted anyone in your family, you’d know,” Tatia assured him, knowing that they wouldn’t keep something like that to themselves. She understood that he didn’t want to put them in harm’s way but they were stronger together than they were apart. “They would want to stand with you, Elijah. You know that.” Elijah had stood by them so many times so she knew that they wouldn’t hesitate to return the favour. He was their family just like he was hers and she knew that they wouldn’t want him facing this alone. “No, we have to be better than him. If we fight and lose sight of who we are in the process then what’s the point in fighting at all?” Tatia asked. She knew that Elijah and his family had fought so hard to become people that they could be proud of and she didn’t want one thing to go and change all of that. As Elijah ordered her not to touch the body, Tatia’s expression went cold. “You might be able to order other vampires around but that won’t work with me. I’m your partner, Elijah. For better or for worse I’m always going to have your back and you need that now, even if you won’t admit it,” she said, doing her best to keep her voice level as her gaze came to rest on the hand that was hovering between them. “What are you going to do, hit me? Do that and it’s the last time you’ll ever see me so Tristan really will have won,” she said, her voice deadly serious as she spoke. This was already feeling far too much like the night Elijah had killed her after becoming a vampire for her liking and she knew that she wasn’t going to stand for that. She had meant it when she said that she was always going to have Elijah’s back but if that meant removing herself from his life and keeping an eye on him from a distance until he snapped out of whatever this was then she knew that that was what she would have to do. “None of us asked you to! Can’t you see that?” Tatia asked, unable to deny that she was getting exasperated. She had certainly never asked Elijah to do anything like that for her and she knew that she never would. It might be different with his family but if he was going to lump her in with the people he seemed to think were making him do this then she was sure as hell going to fight her corner. As Elijah moved towards her, however, Tatia froze. His expression was one that she had never seen before directed at her and the way his lips peeled back from his teeth was enough to bring another face to mind – Elijah’s the night he had killed her. She hadn’t been able to get through to him then and she had felt so afraid, the same fear that she could feel building within her now. Elijah had tried so hard to regain her trust and make it up to her after he remembered what he did to her but now it was like they were back there in that night a thousand years ago and she had no idea how to get through to him. Before she knew it Elijah was throwing her down onto the sofa and Tatia’s breath escaped her. Pushing herself up into a sitting position, her eyes were full of fear as she looked up at Elijah. It really was like he was that Elijah again, the one that had killed her, and she hated that he scared her but she couldn’t help it. There wasn’t much in this world that could hurt her now but Elijah was someone who could hurt her more than most and seeing him like that was enough to break her heart. Tatia knew that she could leave and every fibre of her being was screaming at her that she should do that but she couldn’t bring herself to leave Elijah, not yet. Letting out a shaky breath, Tatia forced her way to her feet before closing the distance between them and slapping him hard across the face. It was something that she would never normally do to anyone but it was the last way she could think of to try and snap him out of it. “Don’t you dare lay a hand on me like that again, do you hear me?” she said fiercely. “I’m done trying to get through to you. If you’re so certain you’re in the right then what are you doing here still talking to me? Go and do what you have to but don’t expect me to be waiting here for you when you get back. I have no idea who you are right now.”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

Like birds in the sky, Tatia’s questions were fluttering around in his mind. Elijah waves a hand as though he could snatch them from the air, trying to brush the feathered wings of doubt away. He had been so certain on the street. After centuries of being hunted, he knew what it was like to have someone on your tail. Elijah shook his head, his brows drawing together as Tatia tried to talk him around to her way of thinking. ”His people are just as smart as he is. Most are so subtle you can barely see the signs. I trained them. I picked the smartest minds and now Tristan is turning them against me.” It had torn at something inside of him to walk away from them once and now he was going to have to tear the Strix apart, one turncoat at a time to save his family. ”What they all want to take from us. Peace. We finally had a home here and now they’ll tear it apart.” He could already picture it in his mind. The vultures descended on them to feed on the bones of his family and the crumbling future that for a few years had looked so bright. Plenty of others had passed them on the street this evening. Elijah could picture each of them in his mind, faces flashing past, some smiling, a few people nodding, none inducing the same sort of rage in him as the man he had ultimately killed. ”He wasn’t just taking a stroll,” he told Tatia through gritted teeth. Where had all of her faith in him gone? It was as though her faith in him had evaporated while he wasn’t looking. Now Elijah stared at their joined hands, his gaze climbing back to the face he had known so well as though he would see her doubts there. ”He walked too close, for too long. If you had been there, you would have seen it too.” Thank God she had been here, Tristan’s reach not extending to the apartment yet. ”No,” he said sharply. ”He knows that showing up here would be a mistake. It’s only a matter of time though…”
For just a moment he had questioned himself. Rational thought cutting through the static in his head for just a moment, clearing the red haze that had descended over him as he’d heard the man’s footfalls behind him. The laugh that rolled briefly from him was bitter, anger tightening the muscles in his jaw. If this was Niklaus talking, none of them would have been questioning him. ”You don’t think Niklaus or Kol would simply have dealt with it alone? How many bodies would they have to drop before you took notice?” Elijah Mikaelson was always different. The brother who would listen, the one who could be talked around, taken advantage of. His mouth twisted as he looked at Tatia. ”Then where are they now?” he asked bitterly. His hands fisted, adrenalin coursing through his body. ”Niklaus has been kidnapping witches, Kol has only ever thought about himself…” And he had been left alone to watch over them all, including Tatia.
”Better.” Elijah scoffed, something hard and sharp gleaming in his eyes as Tatia again tried to be the voice of reason. If only he could drown it out, if only she had told him he’d done the right thing. His mind continued to sizzle, anger boiling away on its surface. ”You were not here to see,” he reminded her, his body finally going still. ”We have always fought and always for the right reasons. To protect ourselves from those who would come for us. This isn’t losing sight of ourselves. It’s finding ourselves again.” And perhaps for a single moment Mikael would have been proud. In a heartbeat, the same cold that had frosted his own features touched Tatia’s. His gaze heated, his outspread fingers twitching as she dared to argue against him. ”A partner would listen. A partner would trust that I had done the right thing. You have done neither tonight.” Some small piece of him yearned for her approval in this, but it seemed as though he would not get it. Tatia’s warning sliced the air between them, leaving him staring at her. ”Then what would have me do? Doubt everything I know, let you go out there to clean up a mess that I’ve laid at the feet of another? You might as well go to him.” But he knew. The part of him that had shattered when he had taken her life the first time cracked again. The very heart of him bleeding, staining his thoughts with the red bloom of blood. ”You would throw what I have done back in my face?” Elijah roared. They had rarely asked him to do anything, but as the second eldest that had been his job. The vow he had taken to keep them together a noose around his throat that would end up choking him one day. Like a rabbit in the headlights, Tatia froze as he moved towards her. Perhaps that was what stilled his hand for the moment, what stopped him from doing worse than just throwing her down to the sofa. For so long he had hidden from the knowledge that he had taken her life. When she had been returned to him he had vowed never to do it again.
Frozen by the thought, he did nothing to stop her as she pushed her way back to her feet, coming to him. Her hand cracked across his face, snapping his head back. His hand was around her wrist again immediately, drawing her close, fingers gripping like he was holding onto her temper as well as he wrist. ”You would do well to do the same. I asked you to listen, to have faith in me. Instead you questioned every word from my mouth. I did what I had to, but it wasn’t enough. It’s never enough for any of you.” Elijah’s voice was hoarse as he took a step back. The wind had been snatched from his sails with the crack of Tatia’s hand across his face. ”I am the man you have always loved. I only wanted to protect you.” To make up for what had been done to those he loved over and over again. Staring down at his hands, Elijah started to back away. He hated that Esther’s voice was in his head, but he needed to scrub the blood away, to watch the guilt rinse down the drain.

Tatia had never seen Elijah like this before, she had known something was off the moment she saw him but the more time they spent together the more she was starting to see just how true that was. The Elijah standing before her now still looked like her Elijah but he certainly wasn’t acting like him and she wasn’t sure why. She knew that he and Tristan had a complicated history and there was always a chance that someone might try making a move against the Mikaelson family but she hadn’t heard any rumours about such a thing and she knew that her friends would have told her if they’d heard anything. They might not all like the Mikaelson family after everything that Klaus had done but they knew that she loved Elijah and saw his family as her own. When it came to something like that past grudges never mattered and she knew that she could count on her friends if it came down to it. This felt like something different though, she hadn’t seen what Elijah had but she also wasn’t sure that he had seen what he thought he’d seen either. He seemed so erratic right now with the way he was being with her, she knew that she couldn’t rule anything out. As Elijah said that he trained the people Tristan had turned against him, Tatia’s expression softened. “Okay. If he has turned them against you and they’re coming after you then we’ll deal with it, I promise,” she assured him gently. She knew how much it had hurt Elijah to walk away from them in the first place so perhaps that was the reason for his behaviour right now. Either way she knew that they needed to get to the bottom of it. Mystic Falls was their home and it had been for a long time so she refused to let anyone take that away from them. “We won’t let them do that Elijah, you have my word,” she said, her eyes locked on his as she spoke. “This life we’ve built here is special, no one is going to take that away from us.” That was something that Tatia would fight for without even having to think twice about, that was for sure. Tatia’s expression turned thoughtful for a moment as Elijah explained about the man he had killed. “That does sound a little suspicious,” she conceded as Elijah said that the man had walked too close for too long. She hadn’t been there to see it but normally Elijah’s instincts on things like that were really good. She didn’t want to think that he had killed an innocent man so despite the fact that it would mean that there was someone coming for him, there was a part of her that hoped he was right. It didn’t change how he was acting nor did it excuse killing him without getting to the bottom of what was really going on but now she knew a little more she was starting to understand a little better. She was still worried about Elijah, though, and she wasn’t sure how to make him see that right now. “We have time to figure this out,” she said gently. Elijah knew Tristan the best but she knew that it would be a mistake to keep it from the rest of his family and not ask for their help. “You’re right, they would have dealt with it alone to start with but you know as well as I do that it never ends that way. You’re family and you’re always strongest when you’re together,” she said, hoping to get through to him but not sure that anything she could say would have any effect on him at this point. Elijah seemed adamant that he had done the right thing even though that had involved killing someone and leaving his body where anyone could stumble across it. Tatia knew just how precious life was so she was never going to agree with a plan that involved killing and the last thing she wanted was for more trouble to end up at Elijah’s door. “If you told them what was going on then they would be here. They wouldn’t let you face this alone,” Tatia said, her gaze level as it met Elijah’s. “And what about Henrik? He might not live with you anymore but he has been there for you ever since you found each other again. Don’t you think he’d want to help you now?” she added, knowing that Henrik would be there without question if Elijah told him what was going on. Tatia’s expression fell as Elijah said that she wasn’t there to see what things were like before. “You’re right, I wasn’t there but I wish I had been. I’m here now though,” she said, her eyes searching his as she spoke. “There has to be a way that doesn’t involve more bloodshed.” Tatia simply wasn’t the kind of person who would ever be comfortable with that so she had to believe that there was another way. She needed Elijah to see that things didn’t have to always be that way but the moment he raised his hand her resolve slipped. “You’re right, a partner would listen but can you honestly say you’ve been doing that yourself?” she challenged. He had dismissed her every time she had said he wasn’t himself and he hadn’t seemed to care that he had hurt her but she could tell that something was wrong even if Elijah didn’t want to admit it. “I’ve listened to every word you’ve said and I’ll admit I’ve been sceptical but that’s because of the way you’ve been acting since you got home. You know I’m never going to see killing someone as the right thing to do, I’m always going to want there to be another way because that’s who I’ve always been,” she said, trying to keep her tone level as she spoke. She didn’t want to lose her temper again, not with the man she loved, but right now it was hard to find the real Elijah underneath the stranger that had returned home to her. “I would never go to him Elijah, you know that,” Tatia said, surprised that he would even say such a thing. “You haven’t laid the mess at his feet, that’s the point. You killed a man and left him out there for anyone to find. That’s why I said I would go and sort it out, there’s no other reason.” A lot of people knew the truth about what Mystic Falls was really like but the last thing she wanted was for any unwanted attention to be drawn to them or other vampires in the town when they had chosen to make Mystic Falls their home. She had been trying so hard not to get angry with Elijah because it was clear that something was going on with him but he seemed to think that he was always getting his hands dirty for all of them, including her, and that was enough to make something inside of her snap. “I get that you’ve done a lot to protect your family but you threw me in there with them when you’ve never once had to get your hands dirty because of me. I would never ask you to do that on my behalf and I would never want you to either,” she said as she did her best to calm down. Both of them getting riled up right now wasn’t going to do either of them any good, it was only going to make things worse. Something had changed in Elijah, though, and before Tatia knew it she was being thrown onto the sofa. She had never seen him like that before and in that moment it made her think back to the night he’d killed her. He wasn’t the same person he had been back then, he wasn’t a new vampire who couldn’t control his bloodlust, but this Elijah wasn’t the one she had always been proud to think of as being hers either. She knew she shouldn’t have slapped him but it was the only thing she had been able to think of to get him to snap out of it. Moments later his hand was around her wrist and she let out a gasp at how tightly his fingers were gripping her wrist. “You know I didn’t want to lay a hand on you but I don’t know how to get through to you right now, Elijah,” Tatia sighed, doing her best not to try and move away from his grasp in case that only made things worse. “I did listen and I always want to have faith in you but from the moment you came home today you’ve been different. This goes beyond what happened with the man you killed, Elijah. There is something really wrong and I’m worried about you,” she said, her tone softening as she spoke and lifted her gaze to meet his. “I only want to protect you as well but I’m scared something has happened to you. You must see that you haven’t been yourself today,” she added although she really wasn’t sure if that was something he could see right now. “Will you let me call your brothers and see if we can get to the bottom of all of this?”ELIJAH MIKAELSON

In his mind, there was no if about it. The burning thirst for revenge had been driving the de Martels for centuries and now Tristan had his chance to enact it. Perhaps it would mean death for Tristan, but self-preservation didn’t always come into matters when the need for retribution burned that strongly. Elijahs gaze ticked to Tatia and then to the windows where he’d stood and looked down on this town, on their town night after night. Now every figure moving beyond the glass pulled at his attention, suspicion cutting sharp through his mind. It didn’t matter that Tatia was promising that she would stand by his side through it all, only that she had doubted his word. She had never been under the same sort of threat, she couldn’t know. Elijah puffed out a breath as she locked her gaze onto his. Another promise, one he knew she couldn’t keep. ”There are no guarantees in this life,” he muttered. There never had been before, but they had always managed to get through the roadblocks and disappointments before, now they seemed insurmountable.
Again he’d tried to explain it to her. He wasn’t a fool, he had never been like Niklaus and Kol, seeing enemies in every shadow. There had been a threat, one that could quite easily come for those he cared about and he’d left that threat soaking the stinking blacktop with its blood where Tristan would find it. They had been the decisions of a sane and logical mind. ”More than a little,” Elijah muttered, his fingers squeezing Tatia’s for a moment. He had done this to protect her. Becoming like them might not be enough to put a stop to Tristan. If he found a weapon that would hurt them, he would go for her first to punish him. Dark brows furrowed, the clock already ticking in her head. ”Not long enough if he’s already growing this bold.” Before the man today there had been Hector in New York. A coincidental meeting that had felt odd then, now it was truly suspicious.
”No,” Elijah said sharply as Tatia laid another reminder on him about what his family was capable of when they drew together. That damned vow they had made one another tying them together long past the time when their relationship should have fractured. ”It always ends the same way, with me fixing their problems. It always ends up on my shoulders, the mess left in my hands.” The ones that were continually bloody for them all. He glanced down at them now as though he’d see that slick of scarlet covering them again. Shaking his head, Elijah tried to cut off her argument entirely. ”I will not bring Henrik into this. He deserves to live in peace instead of being staked out like a goat for Tristan to slaughter. The rest of them are only interested in their own necks.” Always selfish, only ever focusing on their own happiness and Niklaus would see this as a chance for that. He could finally be with Aurora, the woman he couldn’t see would only bring disaster to his life.
Weariness underscored the sizzle of his temper. Over and over the people around him preached peace as though wishing for it was all it would take to make all of their problems to go away. Esther had told him to keep his siblings safe and had bound his mind to make it happen the same way she had Niklaus. Keep your hands clean and everything would be alright in time. Another lie told to him by a woman who had been as selfish as her children. ”Blood is the only thing any of us know. I won’t avoid it anymore.” His fingers curled into a fist as though he could wrap his fingers around that vow. Elijah scoffed at the challenge from Tatia, the woman he loved who refused to see the truth in his words now. ”I’ve heard every word from your mouth. Accusations and doubt, that is all that has been said.” Each breath felt like it was an effort now, frustration labouring every single one of them. ”After all that has happened to you, how can you not see that it’s necessary sometimes?” She was at eternal optimist and that bright side of her had been what had first drawn his eye, now all he could see was how weak it left her. ”That is all you have told me to do, bring my siblings into this. I’m not sure I believe your word anymore. Niklaus has always wanted you and he has never hesitated to strike back at me.” It was too easy to imagine his brother’s hands on her, the two of them taking him for a fool.
Like lightning striking through him, Elijah felt Tatia’s words pierce his heart. She would never ask him to kill for her and yet he would, time and time again. How else did she think he had protected all of them? Centuries of doing what he had to, sacrificing his own happiness often enough that he had been unsure he even deserved it when she had come back to him. His lips pressed together, a pale straight line. ”There is no other way to live, whether you think you can change my fate or not.” There was no diplomatic escape from this feud with Tristan. He would shatter his own life before it was done, striking out at all of those around him to knock down the walls that blinded them to the truth. Even after he had pushed her away from him, Tatia could not see things as he did. ”You would lecture me about hurting another, when you strike me now,” he hissed, her gasp scraping like sandpaper over his nerves. ”The only thing wrong is that family and the shadow they cast on our lives. Look closely, Tatia, and you will see, I am who I always have been. No.” He turned away from her, moving towards the bedroom before he slowed, his shoulders slumping. ”I think you should call them. If you think my brothers will listen to you, tell them. Perhaps they’ll make it clear that I’ve spoken the truth.” Or the opposite would be true, and that tiny voice in the back of his mind almost drowned out by the one that warned him he was better off alone with this was right.
