━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ RICKY COULDN’T BELIEVE IT. FROM THE moment he heard it out of McGrath’s lips, he was denying it. It couldn’t be true. For one, he’d seen how Dolly━or Hannya, as everyone else called her━acted around every other person in the club, and he knew she presented herself differently to Joel. He didn’t think she’d deny anyone who looked at her twice, and while his brother was a lot of things, he wasn’t a cretin. He wasn’t some weirdo who sat around looking to take advantage of women; they’d learned to have a certain suaveness when it came to women, and he knew Manny wouldn’t be so desperate as to…
Apart from everything else, he knew that Manny just wouldn’t. It was as simple as that. He sold poison to the masses and capitalized off of their addictions, but Ricky’s whole plight was that he knew Manny could still be good somewhere deep down. If he believed this, then he was going back on everything he’d spent all these years fighting for.
He had to hear the story from Manny himself. It was bad enough that Joel knew his name now, and worse that he had a personal vendetta against him. Dolly was clearly Hector Dacre’s plaything, and while he didn’t know why Hector was suddenly turning on Manny, he was sure this was another part of their plan.
But he’d have to see.
Ricky waited until his little brother dragged himself out of whatever hole he was in, and tracked him to the casino in town. Of course, because if it wasn’t a bar, then it had to be gambling, right? Any den of iniquity he could find.
Ricky grumbled as he went through the doors only ten minutes after Manny, his eyes scanning the inside before finding his brother seated at a table. Ricky wasn’t interested in joining, but he knew he’d wipe the floor with Manny if he did.
Well, perhaps not anymore. The thought, as trivial as it was, made his chest ache.
His hand clapped down on Manny’s back from behind, and he grinned at the dealer, then at his brother. “Have you gotten any better?” He asked, “I don’t think you ever won a game of Uno in your life. Or Go Fish.” He chuckled and squeezed Manny’s shoulder softly. The dealer seemed to glance between them, then laughed awkwardly, asking,
“Brothers?”
He remembered countless nights of sitting on the floor with Manny after their mom died, trying to find any way to settle his little brother before bedtime. They needed something to do that wasn’t too exciting and was quiet enough so as to not bother their dad. It’d become something of a tradition of theirs, to the point where Ricky couldn’t see a box of Uno in the store without thinking of Manny.
Instead of responding, Ricky leaned in and lowered his voice, speaking quietly in Manny’s ear, “I need to speak with you.”

He was happy to shed the Ruby Slipper club. He no longer needed to follow any of Hector’s bullshit rules and once again he was in control. Manny called the shots and everyone listened to him, exactly how it should be. Why the fuck was he listening to someone like Hector in the first place? Apart from the obvious. Hector was capable of ripping Manny’s throat out in a second. It wasn’t a complete loss, he’d managed to build up some kind of business relationship with Luc, although that was questionable right now. It seemed Luc was too busy being Hector’s little bitch. It was rare Manny dragged himself off to the casino. It was the type of place where his anger could be pushed to the absolute limits, especially when he became convinced someone around the table was cheating. There had been plenty of occasions where he launched himself across a poker table with a knife in his hand threatening the staff. When he entered Dice that evening he has his knife in his pocket just in case anyone thought they could fuck with him. He’d already done ample research on the owner. Turned out that motherf’cker was born a long time ago. Generally speaking though Manny had a level of respect for vampires. They knew what they were about and they were happy to butcher humans. Most of them. Sometimes you had those who were weak as hell. There was only one person who was able to follow Manny without him knowing and that was his brother. Ricky knew exactly what Manny was thinking. He was able to avoid detection through the streets of Mystic Falls toward Dice. He took a seat at the poker table, staring intently at the other people who were also sitting at the table, trying to figure out which one of them was gonna try and cheat. He was barely through the first game when someone approached him from behind, placing their hands on his shoulder. Immediately he turned around, ready to pounce on whoever dared put their fucking hands on him. He was surprised to see his older brother behind him. What the fuck was he doing here? This wasn’t his scene. “Maybe but I always beat you at Rummy.” He quickly shrugged his shoulders away from Ricky. Having Ricky’s hands resting on was making him feel uncomfortable, almost like they were on good terms. Also, he hated the fact Ricky was bringing up their childhood so casually. They were brothers once, but now they were enemies. His attention turned to the dealer, “Mind your own goddamn business.” He snapped harshly at the employee, who shrugged and went back to dealing cards. Right now? He needed to speak to Manny in the middle of a game. He turned back to Ricky, not getting to his feet immediately. There was a moment of hesitation, trying to figure out why Ricky needed to speak to him. He deduced it must have been something important. So important that came to find Manny. “Fine.” He stood up, ignoring the dealers questions as to where he was going, commenting they were in the middle of a game. There was an empty booth, far away from anyone so Manny headed straight for that. He took a seat on the edge of the booth, just in case anything was to kick off he could jump to his feet. “What do you want?” His voice was sharp and demanding, his attention locked on Ricky intensely. ━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ RICKY SHIFTED AWAY AS MANNY SHRUGGED OFF his hands, a small frown creasing the lines around his mouth. He didn’t know what he’d expected━for Manny to embrace him? There was no way. “Eso es porque hiciste trampa.” He chuckled softly, his voice teasing. He’d always used to accuse Manny of cheating when they were younger and he ended up winning, though it was nearly impossible to cheat at Rummy. The running joke was that Ricky couldn’t admit defeat… and their lives hadn’t changed in the slightest.
He sucked in a breath through his teeth as Manny blew off the dealer harshly, a small nod extended to the woman in place of an apology. Thankfully, though, Manny agreed to talk, and broke away from the game. Ricky followed him to an empty booth in a desolate corner of the casino, sitting a little further into the opposite side than Manny.
“When did you become so rude?” Ricky grumbled, remembering the sweet boy who barely needed a reminder to use his manners once he turned four. He was rambunctious, but he was basically Ricky’s child, and the older brother had made sure the younger one wasn’t raised like a heathen. Unfortunately, that life found him anyway… but Ricky still saw that same little boy sitting across from him.
A little boy who’d allegedly hurt a woman.
“I received some information today,” He didn’t want to tell Manny it was his partner, but perhaps that would show Manny how hard Ricky was trying to protect him. “Dorothy Dennison… the woman who works at the Ruby Slipper club━who also goes by Hannya?” He assumed it was a str*pper name. “She came into the station crying…” He lowered his voice and leaned forward, staring at Manny, trying to show how serious this was through his expression. “... covered in bruises. She told us that you… took advantage of her.” He didn’t know a better way to say it, save for crying, ‘Tell me it isn’t true!’ “That Hector Dacre let you. She gave your name and all of your information, which… we didn’t have prior to this.” He wasn’t sure if Manny just thought he was bulletproof or if he knew that Ricky had been protecting him, but he would now.
“What did you do, mijo?” He couldn’t help himself. The name slipped out, but his expression hardened somewhat, his lips pressing together. He couldn’t slip anymore, but he believed his baby brother still existed. He had to… and he couldn’t have done this.

There was a sense of anger building inside of him as his brother rested his hand on Manny’s shoulder, making jokes with him about cheating at Rummy, like they were best friends. Except they once were, not even that long ago. Memories with his brother were still vivid in his mind. If he focused on them hard enough he recognised the happiness he felt when he was with his brother. “Nunca.” They both knew Manny was telling a white lie though. Course he cheated, how else could he have beaten Ricky at Rummy? A smile almost formed on his lips as he joked with Ricky, but it was suppressed instantly. Any trace of amusement on his face faded when he addressed the employee, snapping at him. If he wasn’t careful he’d be banned from the casino too, but then he’d have to go after that French vampire who owned the place. Currently Manny had the upper hand on the man as he didn’t know Manny knew he was a vampire. One drop of werewolf venom in his drink and he’d be gone. He ignored Ricky’s question as he sat down, but Ricky had a point. When did Manny become so rude? Growing up he was nothing like the man he turned out to be. What went wrong? Something must have and Ricky was trying to fix that. That ship had sailed. Manolo wasn’t going to slip back into his old life no matter how hard his brother tried. Tension ran through his body as Ricky announced he’d received some information today. It almost disappeared when Ricky said it was Hannya, but then he continued on with his story, leaning in closely. A look of confusion washed over his features. Advantage of her? He almost laughed. It was impossible to take advantage of a woman who threw herself at men. In the midst of it all he was struggling to believe the cops didn’t have his name by now. Either they were fucking idiots or Ricky had been brushing information under the carpet. It was difficult to choose which story he believed. Manny didn’t even flinch at the name. He shuffled slightly in his seat before leaning forward, so he was a little closer to Ricky. “I would never take advantage of a woman… you know this.” They were raised by a mom who taught them how to respect women. Even though Manny was quick to turn on the charm he’d never cross a line. “She’s a liar… She told me you and her hooked up.” It was a ridiculous story, but one that he believed for a moment. “Que pasa ahora? Manolo was happy to be sent down for things like murder or army robbery, but he wasn’t about to go down for a crime he didn’t commit. “Speak to Dacre. He’ll tell you the truth.” Hector may have cut Manny out of the business, but he was certain the man didn’t want being dragged into these lies too. ENRIQUE DE LA PEÑA

━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ RICKY TRIED NOT TO LET HIS EXPRESSIONS betray him, but he couldn’t help it when Manny claimed she’d tried to say he’d gone anywhere near Ms. Dennison. That was… disgusting. His face twisted up to reveal that he thought as much, and Ricky shook his head sharply. “No. I would never.” Not only because he’d be sharing with McGrath (and apparently his brother, too), but because of the type of woman she was. This was just another indication of how different they were, he supposed━or how different they’d become.
“And I know you would never do such a thing, Manolo, but she was convincing. I’ve always believed she had ulterior motives, and here is where it starts.” He puffed out a breath. Something damning like this could only happen so many times before Ricky couldn’t protect him anymore. It had already slipped from his hands with this, and while Ricky remained with white knuckles around the situation, it was only a matter of time before it slipped again, or the fabric tore from the tension. He might not be so lucky next time.
“No estoy seguro.” He sighed, running a hand down his face before his eyes met Manny’s again, “I’ve attempted to convince them that going after one of Dacre’s accomplices might crumble our investigation, and I believe it’s worked for now.” Key words being for now. “But if you aren’t working with him anymore, then my reasoning falls to pieces. I don’t…” Ricky didn’t want to say too much, to make Manolo believe that he’d be bulletproof as long as Ricky was around, but they hardly ever got to speak anymore. And, on top of that, he didn’t know what he could do if McGrath went guns blazing with this. He’d have to support his partner, and then Manny’s punishment would be out of his hands. “No sé cuánto tiempo podré protegerte, mijo.”

There was the slightest twitch of a smile on Manny’s face when he watched his brother’s expression fade to one of disgust. Ricky’s standards were ridiculously high. “I know.” Even though they had drifted so so far apart, to the point Manny rarely acknowledged Ricky was his brother, he still knew how Ricky operated. Ricky was the one person in the world who knew everything about Manny. He’d witnessed a side of Manny that no one would ever see. He saw him at his happiness, but also at his most vulnerable. It was another reason why Ricky was a threat. Manny was struggling to understand why Hannya had lied. He’d never done anything to anger her. There was nothing she could gain from this. “What ulterior motives?” As always, anger started to stir up inside of him. Had been used as a fucking pawn in her game? She might have been an all powerful demon but Manolo had no problem with lodging a bullet in her skull. The next person to be eating bullets would be Hector if he didn’t march into the police station to explain Hannya was spouting bullshit. He wasn’t going to sit back and let his reputation be tarnished by the word rape. “For the purposes of this conversation I’m still working with Dacre.” It was like music to his ears hearing that there was a potential investigation into Hector. While it was tempted to feed Hector’s secrets to Ricky, Manny was no stitch. This time there was a flicker of tension in his jaw as Ricky referred to him as mijo again. He was more irritated that Ricky was acting like he was protecting Manny. Like Manny couldn’t protect himself. “No necesito tu protección.” He spoke through gritted teeth. ━ if you support evil, you are evil ━ “NO, SHE…” RICKY TRAILED OFF, REALIZING HE couldn’t tell Manny that she was connected to his partner, no matter how much he wanted to believe that his baby brother was still a good man. He’d made enough choices that would prove otherwise, and while Ricky knew he was still desperately hanging onto hope, he couldn’t put someone else’s life in jeopardy. Then he’d be no better than Kaden in the end; a dirty cop content with throwing anyone under the bus so long as it benefitted him.
“I know she’s… algo más.” He said quietly, glancing around them before meeting Manny’s eye again. “And I know she’s protecting Dacre.”
He wasn’t sure why he thought anything else would come out of Manny’s mouth. Yes, he was still working with Dacre for the purposes of this conversation, which meant he still wanted that on the record. Ricky puffed out a breath, knowing another moral dilemma was on the horizon.
He tried to level with his baby brother, to connect with him, but Ricky should’ve known he was pushing his luck. He’d gone too far, and Manny grew irritated swiftly, just like their father. “Por supuesto.” Ricky leaned back in his seat, effectively throwing in the towel as he nodded lightly. “Sólo quiero decir que estoy tratando de alejarte un poco.” If this had been another day, perhaps he would’ve argued, would’ve told his little brother that Yes, he did need Ricky’s protection, but he knew that wouldn’t do him any good right now. And perhaps he shouldn’t have admitted all of that to Manny, but it was hard when all he saw was his baby brother sitting across from him, not the man Manny had become.
“I’ll let you get back to your game. I just had to make sure.” He waved a hand, half-heartedly motioning to the tables where the games continued. Slowly, Ricky slipped from his seat, and shifted closer to his brother. In lieu of the hug he desperately wanted to give, Ricky laid a hand on his brother’s shoulder and squeezed it meaningfully, his own expression one of thinly veiled hurt. After a moment, he finally left, at least content with the knowledge that Manny did not hurt her like that, at least not non-consensually.
