Naturally it was in his best interest to keep an eye on his employees, not just to make sure they weren’t stealing from him but to make sure they weren’t going off the rails. The downstairs staff were most likely to do that with their vampire tendencies and sharp teeth so it was easy to forget about the staff upstairs. Most of them were disposable anyway and a human going off the rails was easily solved. One swift snap of the neck and they were no longer his problem. At the start of his piracy his crew were welcome to go off the rails, in fact Hector encouraged their savage brutal behaviour but then they went a step too far and wiped out an entire village in Australia, forcing them to leave. That wasn’t problematic though. But Hector was forced to put his foot down when the hunters arrived, telling his surviving crew they couldn’t keep ripping through tarvans once their feet touched land. It was a harsh lesson, but stuck with him since which is why he ran a tight ship with the staff at the bar. One messy vampire could lead to them all being wiped out. One messy werewolf overindulging in illegal activities though? It was only going to bring the cops to the bar and they could take him away in cuffs. No skin off Hector’s nose and realistically he shouldn’t have cared, but it was bothering him. As time crept on it became apparent to Hector that he cared whether some of his employees lived or died. Kit’s wellbeing now seemed important to him but he couldn’t go tactlessly shoving his nose into Kit’s business. At first he just observed Kit from afar as his extra curricular activities weren’t exactly affecting his work, but Kit wasn’t immortal. One heavy session would see him six feet under. It felt out of character sticking his nose into someone else's business because generally speaking he didn’t care enough to take that step. Once Kit had arrived at work Hector called him into his office. His mind was running through his options on how to deal with the situation. He could have gone in hard, telling Kit he was on his final warning and he needed to get his act together but that wouldn’t have been fair. He’d given Linc the benefit of the doubt and Lawrence had run through about five final warnings. Instead, Hector took his managerial hat off for a moment. “Take a seat.” He gestured towards the seat across from his desk before sliding into his own seat. “Everything alright with you?” He listened carefully for Kit’s heartbeat, the number one telltale sign someone was lying, although it may have been a little harder to detect with someone whose heart rate was already unnaturally high. “I don’t know what’s going on with your personal life and in fairness your hiding your habit well… I just wanted to check in on you and not as a manager but as a… as a friend.” The F word almost got caught in his throat, clinging to the side, unable to get out. ━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ KIT FELT LIKE HE WAS ON A SLOW, UPWARDS climb. He’d been here before, though, so he knew how easy it was to fall back again. One bad day could send him spiralling down the drain once more, though he’d had a few run-ins since then. With his brother, mainly, who’d dragged him (covered in vomit) out of bed and into the shower, then enlisted Frank’s help in the guilt trip.
Or, y’know, intervention.
Seeing Raik falling into the same bad habits made Kit rethink his actions, as well. He’d managed to do better, to stop doing this shit at work, and then he’d fallen right back into the trap. He hadn’t gotten shit the first time, though, so Kit thought he could skate through another recovery without incident.
He got to work and was immediately called into Hector’s office, though, so clearly he wasn’t getting out of this scot-free.
It could’ve been about anything else, though, right? Absolutely anything. Maybe the fact that Manny spoke to him after his “business relationship” with Hector had seemingly been dissolved.
Whatever it was, Kit couldn’t stress about it ‘til he knew. And if it was about his “extra-curricular” activities, then Kit would explain that he was stopping. That’s all this had to be.
Kit nodded at Hector as he entered, and lowered himself to the spot across from him, nodding curtly. Yeah, he knew what was coming. “Yeah, boss, everything’s good━how’re you?” He knew he wasn’t gonna get away with it that easily, but at least he could make this conversation a little more pleasant.
Then the bomb dropped. But instead of Hector giving him a slap on the wrist for it, he… asked if Kit was okay. He called him a friend. Kit raised his brows, and then he nodded slowly, letting out a deep breath. “Yeah… I’m doin’ alright. Better now.” He swallowed thickly, trying to get over the discomfort. “My, uh… my partner left me.” It wasn’t the same as having severe PTSD from the job he’d had before this one, but it was enough to really take him down. Especially since he’d been the one to fuck it up. “I’ve known ‘er since I was in active service, so…” It was a hard hit. And he didn’t necessarily want to divulge all his personal shit to his boss, but Hector had called them friends, so clearly he didn’t mind knowing.
Kit had never had a vampire as a friend before. He didn’t know how he felt about it, but Hector wasn’t one of the bad ones, at least. Kit knew that for sure.
“You don’t gotta worry, though━I won’t let it affect the job. It’s… done now.” Maybe mentioning his brother dragging him (literally) through the house would be too much, so Kit left it there. That was all Hector needed to know to feel like he was doin’ somethin’ good and to know, as a boss, that it was all gonna turn out okay.

Life wasn’t plain sailing for most people. Vampires dealt with that by drinking and murdering people but humans couldn’t do the same thing. They could drink themselves into an early grave, yes, but the whole murdering part was usually off limits. For starters, they were usually plagued with guilt and regret, feelings which Hector encountered at the very start. But now his kill count was quadruple figures he didn’t really feel that anymore. However he did feel sympathy when he looked at Kit. Hector had never killed a family member or someone he cared for so he couldn’t imagine the guilt Kit carried around with him. Even Hector may have crumbled in that situation. Hector kept his voice upbeat when he invited Kit into his office because being invited into your boss’ office as soon as you arrive at work is usually a bad thing. As expected he lied at first until Hector continued. The conversation was clearly causing a level of discomfort to Kit probably because Hector wasn’t always the most approachable person even though their little trip to London showed a different side to him. There was nothing grateful about the state Magnus and Hector were in when Linc found them. At least Hector was able to hold himself upright. Oh dear, now he’d gone and involved himself in Kit’s love life. Hector wasn’t the type of person to be taking relationship advice from either considering he’d locked his heart in a steel cage for the past few centuries. “I’m sorry to hear that. No chance of reconciliation?” He couldn’t even relate as no one had left him. Hector was usually the one initiating the break up. “It would be hypocritical of me to give you relationship advice. I haven’t loved a woman since the eighteen hundreds.” He chuckled lightly, trying to bring an element of humour to the room. “But… I do know how it feels to have your heart broken and you get over it eventually. Just takes time.” Humans didn’t really have time on their side though. They needed to stitch up their heart as quickly as possible. Hector shrugged a little when Kit insisted it wasn’t going to affect the job. “I ain’t bothered if it’s affecting the job because I know you’re a good employee. I’m more concerned that I’m gonna be attending your funeral in a few months.” It wasn’t all about the club. It was about checking if Kit was okay. KIT CLARKE

━ nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky ━ WAS THERE A CHANCE OF RECONCILIATION? Kit honestly didn’t know. Kace and Frank liked to tell him as much, but was he gonna believe the two guys who’d probably say anything to make him get better? It wasn’t like he thought they’d lie to him, and they certainly didn’t like to sugar-coat shit, but…
Nah. He didn’t believe it. They had to be positive about it. And even if Katja did take him back, why would he do that to her? That was shitty of him━‘cause he’d fuck up, or they wouldn’t communicate properly and someone would get hurt. Again. It was inevitable.
“Dunno. Can’t say I want there to be, y’know? Not if I ain’t…” He gestured lamely to his surroundings and shrugged. Hector would get it, right? He was old as shit; surely he’d been through something before. And it wasn’t like Kit ever saw him with a long-term partner━no one except Hannya, but she wasn’t the relationship type.
Jesus. The eighteen hundreds? Kit’s brows shot up, but then he cleared his throat and shifted in his seat slightly, trying to play it off like he hadn’t just had that reaction. “Doesn’t that ever… get lonely? Y’know, not havin’ a companion? We’re built for that, ain’t we?” People with regular lifespans were, at least━Kit couldn’t speak to what it was like when you were already hundreds of years old. He imagined it must be easy to get cynical when everyone around you died all the time━he also couldn’t see himself loving the same person for centuries at a time. That sounded… fucked up.
“Don’t think I got two hundred years,” Kit chuckled lightly, and though he wouldn’t admit it to himself just now (or perhaps ever), the weight on his chest began to lighten ever so slightly.
Then the conversation got dark again, and━for some reason━it wasn’t as annoying when Hector said it. Maybe it was because it was coming from someone outside of his inner circle━someone he never expected to care this much. “Yeah,” Kit sighed, his eyes flicking down to his lap. “I’m… gettin’ better. You ain’t the first one to tell me that.” He gave a somewhat awkward half-smile, his gaze flicking back up to Hector’s. “Thanks for, uh… thanks for givin’ a shit. I’m gonna figure it out.” At least he certainly hoped so.

Little pieces of information about his life slipped out sometimes. At times it was unintentionally, like when he mumbled to Linc about his dad’s cold attitude when he told Hector he was dying. That was because he’d had a few too many drinks though. The tongue had loosen a little. He was offering up information about Evelyn to Kit willingly. It was to say he understood how Kit felt. Hector had never considered whether he was lonely without a woman in his life. He’d successfully filled that void for centuries, whether it be with other women, friends or business ventures. He was always busy, not allowing himself time to think about what he wanted from his eternal life. But then there were moments his life came to a complete standstill, either around him slowing down. In those moments it could be a little lonely. He had no one to share his life with. Would he have it any other way though? “It’s difficult. I think I’d rather close myself off to any future relationships than meet someone and for them to die three hundred years later.” It was awfully cynical, but it was the truth. It was a little less lonely knowing he’d chosen this life though. There was a twitch of a smile on Hector’s face, “No, but you can take your time.” How long did humans live nowadays? Hector didn’t keep up to date with the median age at death. He didn’t want to be reaching for his best suit to attend Kit’s funeral anytime soon. “Good because I hate funerals and I hate churches… just walking into one gives me goosebumps.” It was a place he wasn’t welcome. Hector got to his feet, heading for the door, “And Kit. If you ever need someone to chat with, I'm here for you.” With his questionable relationship advice, but it was better than nothing. He held the door open for Kit, giving him a short nod as Kit exited his office. KIT CLARKE - end!
