Lottie tried to play poker once, but the rules went completely over her head. She was with Freddie and some of their friends. They insisted she’d pick up once they started playing, but none of it sunk in. For starters, she kept showing everyone her cards and was constantly getting confused between all the suits. Hearts, Diamonds, Shovels and Clovers, right? So, when Lucky let slip she worked at the casino Lottie’s first thought was ‘wow that’s such a hard job!’ It was like her sister was out there performing brain surgery, but then again there were a lot of things in the world that were beyond Lottie’s intelligence. It was unusual for Lucky to ignore Lottie’s messages for a few days (only to reply with one worded answers), but her silence has spun on for a few weeks now leaving Lottie under the impression her sister was pissed at her about JJ. She seemed pretty pissed about it at the clinic, but Lottie couldn’t understand why, which was no surprise. Lottie spent ninety percent of her day feeling confused or lost. Either way, she couldn’t ignore it so she headed for the casino one Friday evening. The doors had only been open for ten minutes by the time she stepped inside in the hopes the place would be quiet but there were already a few people dotted about inside. No sign of Lucky though and Lottie had no idea if her sister was even working. Lucky wasn’t the type to share things, such as her work schedule, with people. Then a wave of anxiety washed over her because there was a chance Lucky would be super pissed at Lottie for turning up at her work and in turn be brutally mean to Lottie. But it was too late, she was inside. People were already looking at her (no one was looking at her) and she’d already handed her coat to the coat man standing at the door (she’d actually just handed her coat to a random customer who threw it on a chair). Slowly she made way over to the bar as she spotted a male. She cleared her throat, breaking into a wide smile as she reached the bar, “Hey… do you work here?” It was a stupid question, but not for Lottie. It was pretty damn obvious he worked there, but Lottie’s brain had never been good at connecting dots. “I’m looking for someone… Lucky? She’s my sister.” Please say, please say no. She didn’t want Lucky storming out the back room, yelling at Lottie for disturbing her at work for something that could have waited. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ PIERRE WALKED THROUGH THE MAIN FLOOR with a quizzical expression on his face. He was trying to mentally tick off his to-do list, but he couldn’t remember half the things that were on it. Someone had told him it was better to write things down, and he or she may have been correct… but he couldn’t even remember that person, so clearly they were not important enough to be written down, eh?
They were waiting on a shipment of new countertops. He needed marble ones, not only because they looked superior, but also because Hector had scared him by talking about the new hire Pierre supposedly had to take on. Well, he’d do it, even without Hector donating some funds for said countertops.
He glanced at all of the tables, the hands being played━how busy it was after their Grand Re-Opening. Pierre was quite proud. He’d hoped Baxter would have come tonight, Baxter and… somebody else, perhaps━Hector? No, Hector had come to their re-opening night. Well, whoever it was, they weren’t there, along with his son, and Pierre tried not to take it personally. Baxter was busy with school and, yes, he was immortal, so he could be in school a hundred times over, but… Pierre would not chastise him for being a good student.
He walked behind the bar and served a waiting customer quickly, attempting to be helpful, but realized━once he was done━that it’d completely wiped his brain of whatever he was doing before. How irritating.
Some woman soon approached, however, and brought his thought process in a completely different direction━he was thankful for the distraction. Especially when the distraction looked like that. “Oui, I do,” He grinned, though he wasn’t sure why she would’ve thought differently. Ah, it didn’t matter, a beautiful woman did not have to be intelligent, too━that would be too much of a burden for her.
“Lucky?” He raised his brows, leaning into the counter. Yes, of course he knew Lucky━having that name in a casino was almost too perfect. Customers loved it, though he knew she did not. “You are ‘er sister? Oh, ‘ow lovely. She’s not working tonight, unfortunately. But she never told me she ‘ad a sister as lovely as you,” Pierre grinned, reaching out for her hand. “Per’aps I can keep you company instead. Would you like a drink?” He asked, and, when he had her hand, he pressed his lips to the back of it, then aimed another smile at her.

She should have known better than to head to Lucky’s place of work and to check up on her. A realisation that hit her once she asked the man if Lucky was working. Lucky needed space and Lottie was about to invade it, which would probably end in a barrel of insults being thrown at her until Lottie shed a tear and fled from the casino. There was a chance her sister wouldn’t be mean with other colleagues around her, but Lottie wasn’t about to bank on that. For a moment she wondered whether she should have brought Catia with her for backup but Lucky would have actually killed Lottie for being so dumb. Still, why was Lottie acting like she was in the wrong? It was Lucky. She was the one who slept with Cam, which was totally gross. She couldn’t think of anything worse than sleeping with someone who her sister had slept with. Ew. It was apparent Lucky wasn’t going to tell Catia either, which meant Lottie had to avoid Catia until further notice because she’d end up slipping up and telling Catia everything without meaning to. The man could have been working a massive badge that said ‘employee’ and she’d still have asked him if he worked there because she didn’t even know the difference between employee and employer. “Oh! French? Hola.” She responded with a wide grin on her face, feeling pretty damn impressed with herself for remembering how to say hello in French. Lottie almost jumped with joy when he told her Lucky wasn’t working. Close call. Next time she’d think twice before making a stupid decision to check up on her sister. The grin appeared on her face again when the male called her lovely, her cheeks flushing slightly. “Please.” She laughed nervously, offering her hand to him. Course Lucky didn’t tell him about her sisters though. Now if Lottie worked there this man would know everything about her life. Her cheeks grew redder as he kissed the back of her hand. Wait, should she do the same to him? Because he was French and maybe that’s what they do in France. No, that was kissing. One on each cheek, then the forehead. “Sure! Can I have a gin and tonic please? Slimline if you have it.” Always watching that figure. “I’m Lottie!” She announced as she climbed on the chair at the bar, placing her small clutch bag on the counter top. PIERRE BAUDELAIRE

━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ PIERRE’S BROWS WENT UP WHEN THE WOMAN responded to him in Spanish, but he knew better than to correct her. First of all, she’d likely argue because women always thought they were right, and second, it wasn’t worth it. He didn’t care if she was prettier than she was smart, because he wasn’t planning on seeing her after tonight. Even if she was Lucky’s sister.
“Ooh… look at you,” He grinned, nodding as if he were complimenting her “French” and not just filling the empty space. He kissed her hand, watched her blush over it, then shifted around the bar to begin putting together her drink.
“‘Course,” He hummed, making her a double, “Anyzing for a gorgeous woman.” They didn’t have Slimline tonic, but he pretended as though they did, and set the glass in front of her before starting on his own.
Once Pierre had put his drink together, he went back around to sit next to her and smiled warmly. “Ah, Lottie… I should ‘ave expected your name to be as beautiful as you,” Pierre grinned, sipping from his glass. “Is it short for somezing?” He asked, then, “‘Ow is your drink?”
After a few more of those━not very many, she was drunk almost instantly━she seemed comfortable, loose, enough, and Pierre finally smiled as it felt like she’d begun to lighten up.
“It’s a shame, you know,” Pierre hummed, reaching out to gently cup the side of her jaw, his thumb sweeping over her cheekbone. “Zat Lucky did not introduce us sooner. I feel as zough I’ve missed out… I could ‘ave known you for so much longer.” And he would not have benefitted from any more conversation with her━as it wasn’t very stimulating━but he knew how women felt about this sort of thing.

There was a surge of happiness inside of her when the man complimented her French, followed by a flurry of butterflies as he kissed the back of her hand. This man was so excotic. She loved it. It was within the moments she was showered in attention by other men she completely forgot about her heartbreak. It was like a temporary cure and it was addictive. Men never looked at her before, when she was with Freddie or maybe they did and she was too wrapped up in her own world to notice. Wow, this bar was the first one in Mystic Falls to actually stock Slimline tonic. She had been forced to drink full fat tonic until now, which was not ideal if she was looking to bag herself another man. “Thank you!” She beamed with a warm smile on her face. Another nervous laugh rolled out of Lottie. She wasn’t used to this many compliments. For any other woman it would be a red flag, but Lottie had never recognised them. Freddie was practically waving them in front of her face at the end, but she was too smitten to see them. “Charlotte, but no one calls me that. It’s too formal.” The only person who called her Charlotte was her dad and sometimes their nanny if she’d done something wrong. “It’s nice. Thank you.” Again, she took another sip from her drink. One drink turned into three or maybe four. Lottie had lost count. But the liquid helped to blur her surroundings and warm her inside. She felt happy, especially speaking to Pierre. He seemed like such a lovely man. His hands were cold on her flushed face. As he grazed his thumb over her cheek she smiled. “Well Lucky has a tendency to keep her personal life a secret… she doesn’t tell a lot of people about me.” There was a trace of sadness in her voice in the last part. She hiccuped loudly as she brought the straw to her lips, finishing her drink in one sip. “Well! You know me now and I know you.” She leaned forward, placing one hand on Pierre’s thigh. “What… um what time do you finish work?” She wasn’t bold enough to ask Pierre if he wanted to go out for a drink after he finished work, but hopefully he’d pick up what she was putting down. ━ moral compromise has its privileges ━ PIERRE FELT A LITTLE OFF HIS GAME, AND while he wasn’t sure why, he knew the perfect practice would be to go home with Lottie. Charlotte, but Lottie for short. He’d likely remember it come morning, but not in a month’s time.
As they continued to drink, and Lottie loosened up more and more, Pierre thought it would be rather easy to get her home━or perhaps even in a back room. The more she drank, the more she came out of her shell, and he found himself laughing and feeling carefree, as well. Only, the feeling of wrongness in his gut kept growing.
The person he was forgetting… weren’t they important to him? Was it a woman? He’d found that ring on his finger, and he was out of practice when he flirted with women… that was strange for him, wasn’t it?
After all the work he’d put into securing company for the night, Pierre realized that he couldn’t go through with it. Well, perhaps he could, but he wouldn’t. Something was tugging at his heart, telling him this wasn’t right, and he was old enough to know he had to listen.
Plus, sleeping with Lucky’s sister seemed like a terrible idea. She might’ve only been a human━or appeared to be━but she was one he was sure would find a way to maim him if she couldn’t kill him. (And if he remembered the woman he was forgetting, he’d be scared of her, too.)
As she touched his thigh and made her move, Pierre felt discomfort swimming strongly in his gut. “You know what, Lottie…” He said lightly, placing his hand atop hers, “You are very beautiful, ma chérie,” Lifting her hand to his mouth, he kissed the back of it, and when he stood, he placed it in her lap. “But I just remembered I ‘ave too much work waiting for me. I must go now. I enjoyed our drink, dzough, and I ‘ope to see you again soon,” He nodded politely at her and left, wondering what the hell had happened to him, and when he’d become so soft.
