”It’s just dinner…” The look Roxxi aimed in her direction said that it was obvious that there was no just when it came to her relationship with Magnus. Heat had risen in her cheeks as she’d waved to Roxxi and had promised to tell her all about it tomorrow.
It was hard to remember having a confidant like her. When she’d started to develop feelings for Kaegan she hadn’t exactly been able to go to Ananda to tell him how she felt, she hadn’t told him about the first time they’d slept together and the sensations that had burned through her like the sun itself had exploded at her core. A couple of years later Elizabeth had come along and she’d had another woman to discuss it all with, but the times were different. You didn’t admit seduction, or held up five fingers bashfully when you were asked just how good it had been. Jo suspected that if she’d tried to hold back Roxxi would have wrung those details out of her anyway.
The sun sparkled overhead, dappling the car with light – a promise for how she was certain their night would end. It hadn’t been a case of a single feast to end the fast, even with those five fingers held up. She’d developed a craving for him, an addiction to the burn, the warmth that lingered afterwards in the slow beat of Magnus’ heart beneath her ear, the harbour of his arm, his shoulder. Her journey’s end right there. In him.
Jo shucked her pencil skirt, the sensible blouse that gave her the air of a serious academic, as she slipped through her bedroom. What went back on after her shower softer, clingier, as much as it could be your curves were as subtle as hers were. An outfit for dinner instead of the office, for peeling off in the dim light of the apartment, or Magnus’ home – that part of the evening far more tenuously planned than the dinner at the French restaurant a few blocks away, the one that promised a string quartet tonight apparently. Dinner and dancing, without an entire hall full of people waiting for the first sign of impropriety, as though dances at the time had allowed for it. A clasp of hands had been the most you could hope for and yet even that had been enough to send a thrill through her. Cheeks flushed then too – without the aid of the blush or a sweep of foundation to try and conceal it – eyes glittering with the bright edge of interest as she’d been passed from partner to partner. Through some of the young men of the village, through Magnus, to Kaegan at the end. And now it was back again. Foundation, that sweep of blush, and the subtle stain of colour on her lips – not from the blood bag that she’d opened to make sure that hunger wouldn’t rise up tonight. The glitter there in her storm cloud eyes as she brushed her hair into that tumble of waves. Jo had barely set the freshly washed glass aside ten minutes later when the buzzer rang. She drifted to the door, grabbing her purse on the way, the sun already settling in her stomach as she rose on her knees to greet him with a kiss. "Hi," she breathed against his lips, skimming hers against them again before she stepped out to join him in the hallway. ”It’s a nice evening … we could walk on over, make the most of it.” It wasn’t as though either one of them had to worry about drinking too much with dinner and not being able to drive back, but the sky was still streaked pink and orange, and she wanted the shivery anticipation of walking hand in hand, as though another tradition remained.
Mystic Falls’ streets were studded with people who seemed to have the same idea. Families gathering together, kids darting among their parents like small silvery fish in a river, never seeming to stand still. Her own had been that way, always disappearing into the market stalls, finding ways through the village that she couldn’t have dreamed of following, even though she’d known every passage and alleyway like the back of her hand.
”I hope you didn’t mind the change,” Jo murmured as they walked, her hand holding Magnus’, feeling the shivery brush of rough palms and calloused fingers (her imagination hadn’t disappointed her) against her own. "It felt like the sort of night for somewhere special and I’ve got it on good authority that this place is just that. Have you ever been there before?” Like so much of the town, she’d seen the restaurant, but had never gone in. The routine she’d fallen into had given her what she’d needed, want had been slipping by, as it had so often since she’d ridden away to Cambulac that last time. What she had wanted then had been taken from her by the queen, who she wanted now was right beside her.

━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS’ FINGERS TREMBLED AS HE ADJUSTED his third dress shirt. Jesus, this wasn’t supposed to happen anymore, was it? Never mind his age, but the fact that he was a vampire should have erased how nervous he was━or, at the very least, the symptoms of it. But vampirism only amplified emotions, and he was already antsy ahead of tonight. It would be fine, though━Jo wanted this; she wanted to be with him, and continuously choosing a new, different shade of dress shirt would not cause her to change her mind.
But tie or no tie? He decided on no tie━it seemed far too formal for what was only supposed to be a casual dinner date. He’d pressed his shirt and pants, however, so he was still looking sharp enough (he hoped). Usually, Magnus entered most interactions with women with confidence and a certainty that he knew what he was going to get from the situation. With, Jo, however, it was different. He knew her, and he didn’t, just as she knew him and simultaneously did not. They’d missed the majority of each other’s lives, but they knew who the other was deep down; they knew the important things.
Magnus left a note for Linc about the leftovers in the fridge before he left, double-checking his watch to ensure he’d be right on time. And, sure enough, he was━though he felt almost naked without a bouquet of flowers. He’d brought her quite a few, though, and while he knew she’d never turn her nose up at them, they saw each other enough that giving her flowers each time seemed quite excessive.
He parked on the curb and buzzed up only two minutes before he said he would arrive, ensuring that he was knocking on her door at the agreed-upon time. He worried, momentarily, that he hadn’t given her enough time, but soothed himself with the reminder that Jo knew him. And this wasn’t their first date, either━she’d know that he intended to be punctual.
As soon as Jo opened the door, Magnus was beaming. She looked beautiful. He told her as much as she kissed him, and silently cursed himself for deciding on the dark blue shirt instead of the black. “Sure,” He nodded, smiling as she stepped out with him. She was ready. Magnus slipped his hand into hers and led her downstairs.
It was a nice night and, this way, he didn’t have to focus on the road instead of her. Magnus could appreciate Jo as much and for as long as he wanted, uninterrupted, and he was planning on doing just that. While walking, he squeezed her hand softly and grinned down at her, bending to press a kiss to her temple. “Of course not,” He hummed, “You’re right, it’s the perfect night for it. Won’t ‘ave many more nights like this, huh? Autumn’s comin’ soon.” And he could wake up curled together with Jo for every morning of it, even if they couldn’t really feel the cold.
“No,” He shook his head lightly, not mentioning that he’d made Linc research it for him thoroughly while Magnus glared at the phone screen over his shoulder. “I’m lookin’ forward t’tryin’ it with ya, though,” Magnus smiled, appreciating all the small things about Mystic Falls that made the town so lovely. There were plenty of people out, a farmer’s market packing up for the day, lights coming on outside of the businesses that were still open. He was happy to be here with his family, the one he was slowly building━the one he’d never give up.
Magnus pulled open the door when they arrived, letting Johanna go in first, of course, as well as allowing her to sit before he did as soon as they were brought to their table.
He settled into the seat across from Jo and spread the napkin on his lap, almost completely forgetting about the menu as he grinned at her. “This is lovely,” He hummed, “I’m so glad we could be ‘ere tonight.” Not just that she’d agreed to go out with him (though he appreciated that, too), but the fact that they’d found one another again, and could engage freely in this relationship. He’d never stop being thankful for that.

She knew how those shirts fitted him by now. The way each of them brought out the blue of his eyes or picked out the gold in his hair, the way the crisp fabric softened under her touch. How they looked when they were draped over the chair in the corner of her bedroom. Jo would’ve said she knew the man beneath just as well, but, oh, it had been deeper than that even when there had been someone else between them.
Now the ghosts had grown thin enough that there was nothing to dull the way Magnus’ palm felt against hers. Tiny shifts of muscle and bone flipping her stomach beneath the cling of her dress – the one that would find its way from her closet more often now that it had been threaded through with Magnus’ compliment, just like her heart.
In the months, years, after she had left England for that final time those were all she’d had left. Words and memories that she would wrap herself in as she sobbed her way through those cold, lonely nights on the road. It would have been easy to flip the switch and save herself from it all. Some did, unable to take the way vampirism heightened their emotions, turning the walk of most of their feelings into a fierce gallop. Grief had struck her heart like a kick from North Wind. Imprinting itself in the aching muscle that felt barely capable of fluttering with life. The bruises of it had faded, but Jo was certain she could have still traced every line of it. Could have.
The sun caught those golden streaks in Magnus’ hair as they walked, giving a good man the halo he had long deserved, despite any reservations he might have had over his own sainthood. Magnus’ deft touch had softened the scars around her heart, drawing feelings out of her that she’d tried and failed to dull over the years. Pleasure slipped out of her on a hum as he dipped his head to kiss her temple. ”You’re that tired of my cooking?” she asked lightly, her lips curving around those teasing words.
She inched closer, turning into him enough to nuzzle his shoulder before she glanced past him and up at the sky again. ”It’s getting colder at night,” she agreed. ”And the storms are on their way again. I got caught in that downpour last night.” Luckily it had been as she’d reached down, instead of out on those snaking roads between Mystic Falls and Whitmore. She’d be forever grateful to the foul weather that thrown her into Magnus’ path again, but there’d been a faint quiver in the pit of her stomach as the sky had seemed to lower like her car was about to be wrapped in lead before she pulled in behind her building. The first drops had been splashing against her window screen, hitting her bare arms and legs as she’d run for the back door and the sanctuary of her apartment.
They’d have been storing wood for the winter already in their tiny home. It would chase the chill from the damp air, but boy was she grateful for modern boilers and heat that didn’t leave everything smelling like smoke. There was still something to be said for huddling together in the cold though, chasing shared warmth, wrapping up in each other as much as the covers. Roxxi might have called her old fashioned for looking forward to something relatively chaste, but there was something thrilling in it beneath the tenderness that she knew would be there.
”I’m glad you are,” she murmured before she laughed lightly, colour touching her cheeks with the same pink that was working its way across the sky. ”Roxxi told me about it. Apparently she didn’t make it through her date there, but that’s not a reflection on the restaurant itself.” At least she hoped it wasn’t. She wouldn’t have been able to tell if there shouldn’t have been red wine in something or if they used the wrong sort of spice. Food was secondary to the company.
It looked the part as they arrived, the waiters clad in their black vests, candles spilling warmth and light onto the crisp white tablecloths, napkins folded neatly on the tables. Jo slipped into her seat, glad that the tables were small enough that she could reach across to take Magnus’ hand if she wanted to. For the moment she tucked her legs beneath her chair, her gaze taking in everything between them before they rose to meet Magnus’. He seemed happy with her choice, that smile lighting up his face again. ”Roxxi was right, it is. She thought I’d like it, that we’d like it.” In her head it was probably the perfect spot for an old fogey’s date.
She traced her fingers over the menu, not really reading anything on it. Her memories were welling back up instead – the little tastes of home she’d tried to bring to the castle (failing for the most part, the English had been horrified at the idea of farming yaks especially). ”Did you ever travel back there?” Jo asked softly. ”I went back across Europe, and every time I found somewhere, something new, I wanted to share it with you all. I was tempted to find someone to go for me, but it felt like it would reveal too much. I love that I can share it all with you now, instead of just storing it up in here.” It had been more than just pasta or the beauty of a waterfall she’d stopped to water North Wind’s son at. It had been so many wonders, so many words she hadn’t been able to speak to them, stored up in her heart as though she’d known there’d be a day like this and a second chance with the people she loved.

━ evil notions come free ━ MAGNUS LAUGHED OFF HER COMMENT ABOUT being tired of her cooking━surely Jo knew that wasn’t possible. He’d take a home-cooked meal━her home-cooked meal━over a restaurant any day, but it was nice to go out sometimes. It was even better getting to treat her.
He bristled, though, when she mentioned getting caught in a storm. Magnus frowned lightly, glancing at her face, “Tell me you’ll be careful drivin’ ‘ome. And you’ll call if ya need a ride.” He shouldn’t have had to be so worried, not when little could kill either of them, but he was. Centuries of life would never strip his nature from him.
Hopefully, though━if all went well tonight━she’d have a slightly shorter drive home.
Magnus walked in behind her after holding open the door, grinning contently at the insides of this place. It was classy. Perhaps he was a little surprised that Roxxi━the shifter with the colourful past whom Jo worked with━had suggested such a nice place. Maybe that was why she hadn’t made it all the way through. Magnus hummed in agreement, then settled at their table and nodded.
“Too posh for ‘er?” He asked, winging a brow, “Ya talk about me?” Was his follow-up, and he grinned cheekily at her━he hoped she would. She and Roxxi seemed to share everything. And, even if this Roxxi (whom he hadn’t met yet) was a wild creature (literally and figuratively), he was glad Johanna had another woman she could connect with. He wanted to give her everything, but there were certain elements of the relationship between women━“girl talk” and the like━that he could not provide.
Magnus’ smile turned sad as Johanna shared the stories of her travel. He’d wished he could’ve heard about her travels as they’d happened, too, but now they had a million stories to share━enough so they’d never run out of things to say. “Back ‘ome?” He clarified, “Not often enough,” But that was self-explainatory. It was hard to watch it change from the place he knew so well and become almost unrecognizable, and he no longer had any connections there━well, except for the royalty, of course. “Went just recently with the lad, though,” He reminded her, “It was nice sharin’ all that with ‘im. Spent most of my time just driftin’.” He hadn’t stayed anywhere long, only enough to appreciate it, perhaps make a few connections, and then vanish. It was best that way.
“I love when ya share it. Love ‘earin’ all about the things ya did,” He hummed quietly, and shifted his smile to the approaching waiter. “Red wine, please,” He said when asked, “Bring out the oldest bottle you’ve got.” Nothing less would do. When the waiter asked about food, though, Magnus glanced at Jo, then said politely, “We’ll need a few more minutes. Thanks,” And watched the boy disappear again.
“‘Aven’t even looked at my menu,” He chuckled, looking down at it briefly before his eyes went to Jo again━the food could wait. “Do ya see Mystic Falls as ‘ome, though?” Magnus felt a small knot in his gut. “‘As it become that, or were ya plannin’ t’leave?” He hoped it wasn’t awful to assume that she’d stay now━for him. “Seems there’ll be enough people ‘ere who won’t be agin’━maybe so many that nobody’ll notice. They’ll say it’s somethin’ in the town’s water.” He chuckled. Mystic Falls was small, but the concentration of creatures here seemed almost improbable. He felt it as they, did, though━a pull that only increased. One that would surely bring even more things to this town.

The frown that caught at Magnus’ features at the idea of her being caught in a storm again had her reaching across to settle her other hand on his arm for a moment, rubbing like she could ease that fear. ”I’m always care,” Jo assured him, her hand rubbing lightly. The corners of her mouth turned up slightly. ”I promise to call if I need you, too.” She would have argued that it put him at risk then, but she was sure it would have found deaf ears. Magnus had spent his entire human existence putting his life in another’s hands, the centuries hadn’t changed that part of him too much.
Every glance at him, every lingering look revealed glimpses of the man she had known then. Courteous touches, the glint in blue eyes and the warmth of a smile that had made those first few months in the castle easier to bear. This was new, the restaurant, something formal, but even here she could see those tiny flickers of young Magnus. His grin had her laughing lightly, a blush warming her cheeks as she nodded. ”She noticed something had changed with me after we met again. I told her about us – as much as I could – and then more later. I think she realised she could cook half of this stuff better than the restaurant could.” Undoubtedly Roxxi was right, but it felt special enough for the two of them. Magnus in a chain burger place definitely would’ve been a mismatch.
Finding Roxxi heartbroken and trapped in a vicious cycle that was literally tearing her to pieces had stripped away some of the shields she’d kept up between the two of them. Magnus had been able to see what she was almost from the second they’d found one another again, but truth was something that had spilled out between her and Roxxi like blood that had welled from the wounds Roxxi’s own claws were carving into her. Thank God it hadn’t changed the way the two of them looked at each other.
Travelling back through Europe a century after she’d left hadn’t been easy. She’d avoided that corner of England that had been home, knowing she wouldn’t have survived the heartbreak of knowing exactly what had happened after she left. Even now, Jo knew she couldn’t dig. Kaegan and their sons had lived out the rest of their lives not knowing the horrors she’d gone through – living in peace. She’d gone through more than six centuries believing they’d found some happiness afterwards. ”Mm hmm,” Jo murmured lightly, the corner of her mouth twitching up faintly as she studied his face. ”It was like a rock in a river for me, my journey diverting around home.” A part of her wondered if it would’ve changed if she’d gone back there with the two of them, or if it would’ve just torn at her heart.
”Did he appreciate it?” Jo asked lightly, trying to bury the ache in her heart again. Her lips pressed together for a moment, something vaguely sad filtering into her smile. ”I never could stay anywhere for long.” The itch had always returned, the desire to see a world that would’ve been denied to her if she’d stayed and married the man her step-mother had picked out for her.
Her smile brightened as Magnus took charge with the waiter. It took on an apologetic edge for a moment as she picked up her menu as though chagrined. ”I could talk your ears off with them,” she admitted. ”Put you to sleep like they’re lullabies.” She had done the same with her sons when they were smaller. Another pang caught her in the pit of her stomach at the thought. Covering it up, she puffed out an amused breath, letting her gaze rake over her menu before she looked up and met Magnus’ eye. When the waiter returned she’d likely just order on autopilot, what she ate not as important as the man in front of her.
Jo didn’t hesitate before she nodded at Magnus’ question. She reached across the table for his hand, as though she needed the touch to make him hear the honesty in her voice. ”I see you as my home,” she said softly. It had always been that way for her. Her parents, Ananda, her aunts and uncles, had always meant so much more than the house in Cambulac with its stables and courtyard. ”I’m not going anywhere,” Jo promised. Not without him, and only if, when Magnus decided to move again. Mystic Falls wasn’t like other places, the town was filled with the supernatural, people lingering here long before they would’ve moved on from other places.
Laughter rolled out of her softly as she shook her head, something wry in her grin now. ”I’d be worried if it was,” she mused. ”It does seem like somewhere made for people like us though. Did you know that when you came here?” She hadn’t heard anything past the general rumours that had leaked out, but now it felt like just the camouflage she needed to be able to stand with one foot in the past, one in the future, both hands gripping those of the man who straddled that line with her. ”Oh, I should choose,” she said lightly as the waiter made his way back towards them. ”Do you want something to share to start?” Roxxi might have been able to pick and choose the few diamonds in the rough of a menu she’d turned her nose up at, but she was slightly in the dark here.

━ evil notions come free ━ “NEVER.” MAGNUS SMILED, HIS EYES drifting over her face, taking her in with a warm expression━a heat his body could barely achieve nowadays. Well, unless he was around her.
When she professed that he was her home, he suddenly got a feeling in his stomach that he hadn’t had in a very, very long time. One he wasn’t sure he was capable of anymore━it seemed like the type of thing only achieved by human teenagers. But he could feel it, without a doubt, and beamed across the table at Jo, squeezing her hand lightly in return. “I feel the same way.” He hummed lightly, “You and Linc are everythin’ I need.” Their own little family of sorts. Always complete, no matter what, as long as they were together. Perhaps one day, Linc would want to separate from him, to explore and find his own path, and Magnus would have to let him go, but he didn’t want to think about that now. Not while everything seemed so perfect.
“No,” He said lightly, “Only an inklin’ that it was more than it appeared to be. I already ‘ad a business ‘ere, but it wasn’t truly an ‘ome until I brought Linc.” He smiled lightly. “What made ya take the job at Whitmore? Lookin’ for somethin’ quiet after a long life of travels?” Magnus teased lightly, only because that seemed to always be the story━at least, it was his, too.
He nodded as their attention went back to the menu, remembering that the food part of this was just as important as everything else he had planned. “Sure,” Magnus hummed, his hand sliding away from hers to find the other side of his menu. “‘Ow about the ‘Antipasto Board’?” He asked, his eyes skimming over it quickly: An assortment of cheeses, cured meats, olives, nuts, fruit, etc. It sounded nice enough, and good for them to pick at as they talked.
When the waiter came again, he poured their wine, then Magnus ordered, and as the boy waltzed off again, his blue eyes slid to Jo once more, giving her a loving smile. He figured now was as good a time as any to ask. He couldn’t imagine her turning him down.
“Would ya… perhaps want to ‘ave your ‘ome a little closer?” He asked, his grin growing slowly. “As in… livin’ with us━making an ‘ome with me?” Magnus knew he wanted nothing more in the world, and he hoped it was the same for Jo.

A part of her even now missed the Cambulac she had known as a child, the one that had always welcomed them back with open arms, family flooding to see them and what they had found on their travels. They would gather around her father, keen for news and the stories he could tell like no other. Jo had found herself telling those same stories to her children, trying to coax the boys to sleep with tales of Sakyamuni created the land from a golden frog and the Mongolian death worm, rumoured to be able to poison a man with a single touch. In the firelight, over mugs of ale on those cold dark nights she had done the same with Kaegan and Magnus, sharing small parts of all that had been before with them. Her heart ached for a moment as she remembered those days, but it didn’t feel splintered as it once had. Time had healed some of those wounds, the warm touch of Magnus’ hand there on the first night they had lain together healing more. Now, with the smile and the soft brush of his gaze over her face, Jo could imagine herself doing it again. It would be without the firelight this time, but not without that warmth that wrapped around them like a blanket.
They could’ve been back in England, or Cambulac, it wouldn’t have mattered where, as long as they were there together. She hadn’t imagined she would ever see Magnus again, or to replace the man she had vowed her life and heart too, or the sons they’d had together. As each shift had happened here, Jo had realised that they were all she had wanted – a family, a man to love. Her other hand came up to settle on Magnus’ forearm, a shimmer in her eyes like storm clouds reflected in the still surface of a pond. ”You’re all we need too,” she promised, knowing that the boy probably hadn’t said it aloud. After all he had been through it was no wonder it had taken him time to adjust, but she’d seen how he cared for Magnus, the guilt he shouldered when he thought he’d let Magnus down and become the sort of monster he’d been freed from.
Maybe Linc hadn’t seen the town as a home when he’d been brought here – newly turned, carried away from everything he’d known (even if it was a nightmare of a life by all accounts) – but this has been Magnus’ base and perhaps it had looked like the sort of place that would finally bring Linc the stability he’d never had. ”Something like that,” Jo admitted as Magnus turned her question back on her. Her mouth tipped up at the corners, her head tilting lightly as she thought back to the opening she’d found for a Geography professor. ”It felt like I’d come to the end of the world when I finally got to the West Coast. I never meant to turn back, but I wasn’t sure where else to go. I guess I was still restless, but not anymore.” It had been a long life of travels, the road always feeling like it would stretch out before her forever. If only she’d known where it would lead her back to when she’d followed it here. It felt as though that road was always destined to lead to Magnus.
She’d never been the sentimental sort, but Jo felt it thick in her throat as she realised they’d soon have the waiter back here, hovering until they ordered. This wasn’t her apartment, or Magnus’ house, they couldn’t linger there all night just talking. Jo drew the menu towards herself again as Magnus looked at his. Most of the menu was familiar at least, versions of things she’d eaten since she’d first passed through Italy on the way to her grandfather’s home. ”It sounds great,” she murmured, her eyes finding it on the menu. Something to graze on, to linger over a little longer than they might’ve done.
Jo straightened up as the waiter reappeared, her smile polite, her eyes on Magnus as he ordered for them. Her smile warmed, broadened for him when they were alone again. She’d chosen well, even if Roxxi might end up being right about the quality of the food. Her gaze flicked down to Magnus’ mouth, back up to his eyes as he began to speak again, like she could figure out the meaning of his question from the micro shifts in his expression. Even if she’d been able to read each of them she never would have …
Living with them. A home with the family he’d opened up to her. Jo’s voice locked in her throat for a moment, emotion swelling up from her chest to steal it away for a moment. The ghost shimmer of tears became more real, her eyes glittering with them as she nodded. Her lips pressed together around that exploding supernova of emotion in her throat, parting only when she’d managed to swallow it back. ”You mean, move in together, with you and Linc.” She was already nodding, blinking back those tears. ”I want that more than anything,” Jo admitted. ”If it’s OK with Lincoln?” There wouldn’t have been a heartbeat’s hesitation if it was just a home with Magnus, but home was more than him now. She knew in her heart he wouldn’t have asked her if Linc had said no, she had to ask though the yes was burning on her tongue and she was reaching out to grip his hand in hers again, an anchor to that new life.
