Leah was sorry for what she’d done, but she couldn’t utter that important word to Remzi. By doing so she'd surrender to him, accepting she’d lost the battle. It would be a sign of weakness and she’d already displayed too many of those to him over the past twelve months. The problem was he was her weakness. Her ultimate soft spot. If someone wanted to hurt Leah all they would need to do was to go after Remzi because as much as she hated it she needed him in her life. But now he was gone and she was left trying to make sense of her life without him in it. It sucked she couldn’t drink herself into oblivion, forcing her to forget the aching pain that had been lingering in her heart since they parted ways. Everyday she had to endure it, a sharp reminder than she’d fucked up something that was important to her because she was too fucking scared to confront her own feelings about Remzi. It was easier to throw it all away than acknowledge she cared about someone other than herself. It was a deep sense of caring too, like she actually cared if Remzi lived or died. The only other constant in her life was work, so Leah threw herself into that. The time she spent convincing idiots to follow her lead was time she wasn’t spending thinking about him. It was never ending too. As soon as her feet landed in Mystic Falls she’d be called away again, albeit not too far. In fact a large number of her call outs were for people in town. Someone had been busy slaughtering humans. To begin with she thought maybe it was Remzi. This was his attempt to get Leah’s attention, but then she realised he wasn’t smart enough to think of something like that. In her latest pick up she spent some time observing the body. It wasn’t Remzi’s handy work, no puncture wounds in the neck for starters. The ghost had no idea who killed them either. Hospitals were the worst jobs. The place had that awful disinfected smell in the air and people were often rushing around. It was constant stress, putting Leah on edge whenever she was sent there. The room she appeared in was empty, apart from the recently deceased old woman, so there was no need for her to hide away from a grieving family. “I’m guessing you’re ready?” The old people were always the easiest to deal with because they were expecting death to collect them soon. Leah didn’t need to stand there explaining to the woman what had happened. She was whisked away upstairs and Leah was back in the room a few minutes later, just staring at the old woman's bed. This was exactly how her mom was going to go. Alone, unloved and surrounded by no one. ELIAS ELLIOTT

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ ELIAS TAPPED THE FOREHEAD OF THE STRANGE, zombie-like thing charging at him. Immediately, it crumbled to the ground, and the soul that emerged seemed more lost and upset than they regularly did. She was surprised by the state of her body, and claimed she couldn’t remember anything in the last week or so. One thing she did, remember, though, was coming home from a week’s stay at the hospital. Elias took her to her afterlife, then travelled to the nearest hospital, where he had to quickly dispose of another person who’d been restrained in their bed. He watched from the corner of the room, remaining invisible, and assessed the situation. The patient was attempting to savagely attack the people caring for him, and while he was human, there was something else emulating from him. Something significantly darker.
Elias shifted over to check the patient's file, finding that he’d come in for a simple dialysis━something he’d done many times before. A blood transfusion was needed, and then, suddenly, he’d grown increasingly irritable. They decided to keep him to monitor his status━this was marked as about four hours ago.
It took four hours for this old man to become a savage, careless being, void of all humanity. That didn’t seem right.
Elias reappeared beside the blood still hanging over the man’s bed while he kicked and snapped at the staff, waiting for his heart to go out. It would fail shortly. He flicked the bag, noting the name and date scribbled on the label. He’d heard something similar happening last week to another reaper outside of their area, and now it had seemingly spread to Mystic Falls. Great.
And as much as he hated conferring with his fellow reapers (they were still all more or less useless at their jobs), he knew that he had to see if the rest had experienced it, too━and tell them that they should at least be on the lookout for it.
Of course Leah had to be the closest. She was in the same hospital, in fact, and Elias appeared beside her, glancing at the body still laying there, then at Leah. Clearly, she’d already dispensed of the soul, so why was she just lingering? In any case, it wasn’t Elias’ business, nor did he care.
“Something is happening in town.” He said, not bothering with pleasantries, or even so much as a ‘hello,’ then added, “To the humans.” He turned to her, “I believe it happens through their blood. Within a few hours of infection, they turn into mindless, vicious savages. It’s as though we’re living in some sort of shitty zombie movie.” Not that he’d killed any brain cells by watching that shit. LEAH SIVAN | no notes.

It was sad that there was no one around to witness the old woman take her final breath. No a single person was there to hold her hand when it was time to go. Maybe Leah would pop in to see her mom draw that last breath so she could celebrate the bitch was dead. Her hand wrapped around a champagne bottle, waiting until the very last second until she let the cork out. There was a chance her dad would join her for a drink too. He said he forgave his wife for what happened, but Leah had never been convinced. At first they stuck together for Leah but now it was just a show for the pack. It was impossible for someone to love that woman, which was exactly how Leah had started to feel Leah about herself. She’d catch moments where she was embodying her mom and it was sickening. Was she slowly becoming the person she’d despite growing up? Fuck, she was getting so tired of becoming lost in her own thoughts. Deep thoughts too, not the ones about when she was going to get her nails done or what cocktail to order from the bar. She’d started to analyse her own behaviour, criticise herself and second guess everything she had done up until this point. She’d spent weeks raking over her decision to sleep with Hannya and Mitch. It was a mistake and one she was regretting, but it was difficult for her to convey that to Remzi. She was taking the easy route by ignoring him. Leah’s head turned slowly as Elias appeared next to her. Hospitals were full of reapers so it was no surprise to see her colleague there. She turned her body to face him, her arms crossed over her chest as he spoke. “Hello Elias… oh yeah I’m doing fabulous thank you, how are you?” It was like the role of a reaper had been built with Elias in mind. Cold and emotionless. A demeanour that followed him into the bedroom. “I’d love to say you're chatting shit but in this fucking world anything is possible.” You could throw a three headed pig in front of her that could tap dance and she’d shrug her shoulders. “There has been more call outs lately but I thought we had a very hungry vampire on our hands.” Her hands unravelled before falling to her side, “Wait, why do you care? Got nothing to do with us.” Death probably didn’t give a shit either, it wasn’t exactly upsetting the natural balance. ELIAS ELLIOTT

━ peace is a struggle against our very nature ━ E ELIAS DIDN’T BOTHER TO RESPOND TO LEAH’S DIG. Perhaps it wasn’t a dig, per se, but she definitely intended to get some sort of reaction out of him━an apology, maybe? As if Elias felt any guilt over getting straight to business. Without him, nothing would ever get done.
“Not a vampire.” He answered simply, though Leah surely knew that already. He thought about Winter━just her abilities, of course━and how she may be helpful in figuring out what happened to these people. She could read their pasts, and confirm details for Elias. He’d have to find her first, though, and he assumed she’d want something in return. Perhaps an apology? People always expected that of him even when he did absolutely nothing wrong.
He couldn’t stand the fact that she didn’t see why this was a problem. No, what Elias couldn’t stand was that he seemed to be the only competent reaper in existence━or at least in his vicinity. He was sure there were others somewhere━anywhere━else, or at least he hoped so. Though he figured nothing would get done if there wasn’t.
And where the fuck was Death?
“Yes it does.” Elias puffed, staring at the corpse laying before them. “The fact that we’re both here means that it very much does have something to do with us. Something is happening to the humans━infecting them━and that should concern all of us. It makes them volatile, more likely to kill others, and there doesn’t seem to be a cure or even a cap; no way to satiate their desires.” Why did he have to spell it out for her? It should have been obvious. “Have you noticed any other trends in the humans?” She likely did, which meant he had to find Winter sooner rather than later. LEAH SIVAN | no notes.

The truth was Leah didn’t give a shit if there was some zombie brain eating weird fucking virus out there destroying humans. She had her own shit to deal with where Elias had absolutely nothing going on in his life. Well, she was presuming so. All he did was work, work, work. Now he was probably on some mission to find out what was going on with the humans because apparently that involved reapers, somehow. Wait, maybe this was a perfect distraction for Leah. She couldn't be thinking about Remzi if she was too busy helping Elias with the rabid humans. Plus, it was always enjoyable staring at Elias, daydreaming about what lay beneath his clothes. She’d had a taste of it a few times and she was keen for more. Leah pictured curling her hands around his shirt, pulling him down onto a free hospital bed. Shame the one in the room was already occupied by a body. They could always throw her out in the corridor. No matter how hard she tried though her mind constantly jumped back to Remzi. Immediately she felt a sting of guilt as she thought about Elias. Fuck. She couldn’t even imagine being in bed with another man without feeling guilty. Her mind was truly broken. Remzi had successfully ruined her. “We’re here because two people have died… but fine, maybe we should be concerned.” She wasn’t though. Leah was far from concerned about it. “The call outs I’ve had weren’t humans killing humans. It’s been supernaturals killing humans… not just vampires either. Some girl the other week was killed by a warlock… all the murders have been pretty brutal too.” Leah was used to being dragged out to pick up a human who had been torn apart by a vampire, but a warlock? That was almost unheard of. “Anyway.” Elias was the perfect person she needed to help her forget about Remzi. A small smile formed on her face as she turned to him, stepping forward. Leah’s hand curled around the fabric of his t-shirt. “I reckon we have ten minutes before someone comes in.” Already she was tugging him towards the ensuite in the room, “If you can last that long.”ELIAS ELLIOTT - end
