━ i can't get you out of my head ━ YELLIN’ AT KITTY WAS ONE THING, BUT NOW SHE had to have a talk with River, and… Krista wasn’t sure how it was gonna go. It’d been a little while since she was, like, literally taken━a little while since River showed up with Mal to save her and accidentally got exposed to all that supernatural stuff.
Krista felt so bad for what happened afterwards. Not only had she forgotten Mal, but that whole night was wiped from her mind, and whenever River wanted to talk about it, she basically just… brushed him off. Claimed she couldn’t remember, that she had no idea what he was sayin’. And she didn’t, it wasn’t a lie, but she could see how hurt it made him, and she felt worse now that she could remember all that.
He was next on the list of people to chat with. First, her and Mal obviously went back to his place and, well… y’know━and then she had to confront Kitty. It made sense, too, ‘cause Phoebe’s apartment was closer to Mal’s motel room, and Krista wanted to flush out all her anger before she went apologizin’ to River. ‘Cause that’s what she had to do━apologize. Profusely.
And prob’ly explain tons of it.
Krista went to his apartment and bounced on her toes on the elevator ride up, though she’d texted him beforehand to say she was comin’ over. She hadn’t actually seen him a lot since it happened, and she thought she knew why. ‘Cause who would wanna talk to someone who “pretended” a big thing never happened when it was probably tearin’ you apart?
She also took her pre-text as an excuse to knock twice ‘fore walkin’ in, ‘cause they were family and, like… when did she have to knock?
“Hey.” Krista croaked as soon as she saw him, and rushed over to toss her arms around her brother. It felt like she hadn’t really seen him since that night, even though she knew that wasn’t true. “Um… I just…” Oh, gosh, how was she even gonna explain this?
Krista lowered to his couch and smiled almost sadly at her big brother. “I wanted to talk t’you ‘bout… okay, I know it’s been forever, but, um, I know I said I didn’t remember that night━y’know, when you an’ Mal came t’save me━and I didn’t. Til recently.” Her big, hazel eyes flicked up to his face, and she pouted. “An’ I’m so sorry I made you feel bad before, ‘cause I didn’t remember!” She rushed out, almost like it was one big word, “But I remember now! And I can talk about it━if you wanna.”

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River, to put it simply, was losing his frickin' mind. Has been losing it ever since the day that he got exposed to the supernatural without his consent. He thought vampires existed only in fiction and not in the real world where they live in. He needed to talk about it to someone and oddly enough, whenever he brought it up to his sister, she acted like she had absolutely no idea what he was talking about and it frustrated him even more because what the heck?! She was right there with him that day, she was the one abducted by those people but for some reason, she won't talk to him about it and he thought they were closer than that, close enough to not keep things from each other, no matter how absurd they sounded. Couldn't she see how much it was affecting him? He could barely even sleep because he kept having nightmares of being hunted down by vampires. It got so bad that he thought he could see them in the darkness of his room but he knew it was just his mind playing dirty tricks on him and try as he might to get his sister to open up to him, she never did. It hurt his feelings, a lot. To the point where he actually kept his distance from his sister just to give himself time to process everything without the useless lies from his sister.
The internet didn't help him in the slightest and try as he might to pray for answers, he had absolutely nothing except those memories and with time, he grew even more worried that he was just making these things up in his head but he knew what he saw and even though his mind tried to rationalize with him and make him think that he must have been too stressed that day because surely vampires can't be real, he knew all too well what his brain was trying to do. For the first time, he felt like he was too scared to even go out.
River frowned over at his phone when he felt it buzz. He glanced over at the text, not surprised to find that it was from his sister. He'd been ignoring her texts for quite some time now, but only because he didn't want to argue with her and he wanted to give her space since she obviously thought that she couldn't talk to him about what had happened that night. That was the only way he could rationalize her attitude and how quickly she brushed him off whenever he'd try to bring it up.
River pushed himself up from his bed to go into the kitchen to make himself a cup of coffee, knowing that it will limit his chances of getting any sleep tonight but that was also the point. River started sleeping with the lights on, the windows shut tight, and the doors locked just because he was worried that something will enter his room while he slept and feed on him Dracula style. River, without even realizing it, looked over his shoulder as he gave his back to the door to make his coffee and even then, he couldn't help but think that there was someone standing behind him. He sighed in relief when he found nobody there and instead hurriedly finished making his coffee and once it was poured into his white mug, he began making his way over to his living room. He put on a movie in hopes of distracting his mind from all those unanswered questions but that didn't really help because even with the movie on, his mind wandered miles ahead and when he heard a knock, or two to be exact, on the door, he nearly flinched out of his skin, his eyes widening when the door opened only for him to relax visibly when he found himself looking at his sister.
"Uh, hey." He didn't think she'd actually come tonight but here she was. River pushed himself up and placed his mug down before he approached his sister and when she hugged him, River relaxed even more. He wrapped his arms around her and for a while, he forgot about how upset he was at her for dismissing him and instead just allowed himself to melt into the embrace while it lasted. When she leaned back, so did he. His eyes scanned her features to make sure that she was okay and when she started talking, River waited patiently for her to finish. He turned to look at her properly as she moved to sit down on his couch where he was sitting moments ago. He crossed his arms in front of his chest and even though there was a small frown on his features, he wasn't fuming.
He was quiet as he listened to her before his expression softened when she apologized and even offered to talk to him about it. River finally uncrossed his arms and soon, he was approaching her. He sat down next to her on the couch. "I'm sorry, too. I should've known that you wouldn't lie to me like that or dismiss me." With the apology out of the way, he turned himself toward Krista to be able to look at her better. "Have you always known? About Mal being a... y'know?" River couldn't bring himself to say it but he wanted to know if his sister had always known about Mal being a vampire. "I just don't know how any of it is real, y'know? It feels like I'm in a supernatural movie or something. It's terrifying." River let out a humorless chuckle before shaking his head. "How come you couldn't remember anything? Did they ━ Did they hit you on the head or something? Wait, did they make you forget? Can v━vampires do that?" River had to push the word out because it still felt so surreal to even suggest such a thing, but he just wanted to understand. He hated not knowing.

━ i can't get you out of my head ━ KRISTA KNEW IT WAS SUPPOSEDTA BE SOME BIG secret, like, nobody was supposed t’know about vampires, but River already knew. He was left to run in circles in his head about it, wondering if he was crazy, or if everyone knew something he didn’t. Krista went through the same thing when this all started━when she’d wandered back to the motel and nobody believed that she couldn’t remember where she’d been. River had always been a little more understanding than everyone else, and she could only offer him the same thing.
But, like, obviously Krista actually knew about it. Nobody knew back then.
“Yeah. ‘Course not.” She smiled sadly, hazel eyes ticking over his face. Krista felt a little better when River actually looked at her━it seemed like she was gettin’ somewhere! Sometimes it was hard for Krista to connect with people, but she’d never really had that problem with River. They’d always been best friends in a way━River had her back no matter what. And she’d always have his.
When he asked, Krista swallowed through the pins in her throat and nodded. “I… yeah. Pretty much.” She cleared her throat, “It can be kinda scary,” Krista wouldn’t know about that, though, ‘cause she always thought it was awesome. She liked knowing a secret nobody else knew━and sharing it with Mal. “But… it is real. It’s kinda like a movie. I think… I think there’s more than just vampires, but I’m not sure how much more.” And she wasn’t about to out Kitty as a werewolf.
She nodded again, this time slowly, “‘Member that time me, mom ‘n dad came over to Mystic Falls, and I disappeared? And nobody believed me that I didn’t know where I’d been?” She puffed, wondering, briefly, if River had always slightly doubted her and would finally have his confirmation, or if it’d all start to make sense to him now. She hoped that, whatever it was, it’d include the latter. “I met Mal that night, but he made me forget. I didn’t know ‘til I saw him again, and I asked… him not t’make me forget.” Krista tried to quickly skate past any less-than-savoury details. River really didn’t needa know ‘bout those. “But when those people came ‘n got me… they said if Mal an’ me got to leave, then I’d forget him━forget everything━including the night you guys came t’save me. So I really didn’t remember. But, um, yeah━vampires can do that.” She frowned as she remembered that night, and how terrified she’d been.
Krista looked down at her hands, idly twisting her fingers in her lap, trying to fight through the anxiousness. “I also… I just wanna say thank you for gettin’ Mal. For comin’ with him━for savin’ me━‘cause I dunno… I dunno what woulda happened if you didn’t.” Krista looked up at her brother with tears in her eyes, a tiny smile working its way onto her lips. “And I know it was really scary an’ it made you… like now you know ‘bout everythin’. And I’m sorry that happened.” But she appreciated it so much; Krista just wished River didn’t have to be stuck with the after-effects.

━ i will let you down, i will make you hurt ━ River's lips stretched into a small sad smile at Krista's words. He should have handled it so much better, he should have reminded himself that it wasn't at all Krista's fault but after seeing everything that day, he just couldn't process everything in a rational way and instead, he just spiraled and it was a good thing he'd been alone during the whole process because it was definitely not a pleasant sight. But now, he felt like he was ready to hear more and so, he stayed quiet for the most part as he listened to his sister answer his question. His eyes widened slightly at the revelation that she had known about Mal's... condition but still chose to be with him. He can't tell if that was smart or stupid, honestly. “Does it not scare you?” River asked a moment later because River was this close to losing his shit, but for his sister to be this close to a vampire, he can't help but admire his sister's bravery because he was also this close to locking her in here and never letting her see that fanged creature again. He got his answer not long after when his sister told him that it can be kinda scary. God, it was definitely very scary.
“There's more?!” River's voice cracked near the last part but he quickly cleared his throat and looked away with wide eyes as he took a moment to process his sister's words. “There's more...” He repeated as he stared at a distance with the same wide eyes, looking like he was about to dissociate and sink into his own head as he builds some very unfriendly pictures of equally unfriendly monsters.
But he seemed to snap out of it as his sister recalled the time that she had disappeared. He nodded his head slowly to show that he definitely remembers that awful time. His eyes widened again at his sister's words before he frowned slightly because a thought crossed his mind and it wasn't exactly a pretty one. “Wait, was he the one that hurt you that night?” River almost sounded angry as he asked that and with how deep his frown was, he was definitely on the verge of getting angry and actually banning his sister from ever seeing knock-off Dracula again. “Or do you not recall because of the weird vampire-y mind trick thing?” Because apparently vampires can make humans forget things. How wonderful! River was never stepping out of the comfort of his room ever again.
“God, that's twisted.” River shook his head as he listened to his sister because it was just an awful thing to do. “You must've been so scared. I'm so sorry, kiddo.” River reached to put his hand on her arm, giving it a gentle reassuring squeeze as he kept his eyes on his sister, still giving her plenty of room to keep talking, keeping his interruptions to a minimum. His expression softened when she thanked him and soon enough, he was shaking his head as if he reassuring her that she didn't even need to thank him and that was truth. He'd—”I'd do it again. In a heartbeat. You're my little sister. I'd never let anything bad happen to you. Even if it means that I have to go against some scary unsavory vampires.” River assured in a soft voice, meaning each and every word because despite how scared he was, it'd never stop him from coming after his sister.
“It's okay. It's not your fault, Krista. I don't want you to feel like you ever have to hide anything from me for my own good. I want you to be able to talk to me about anything.” River knew that this was the upside of knowing about the supernatural, that now his sister won't have to pick her words carefully around him to save him from knowing the horrible truth about the supernatural world. “So, I'll get over it. I have to.” River nodded his head slowly, taking in a deep inhale before exhaling softly.
“So, uh, how are vampires created anyway? Is it like Dracula? Black magic and all that?” River asked with a slight tilt of his head following. It was definitely a good progress that he was open to learning more and not just painting unpleasant pictures in his mind. “And... also, what other things are out there? Are they just in Mystic Falls? This town feels like it's a magnet for all the bad things, I swear.” River let out a nervous chuckle followed by a shake of his head and once again, he was stuck wondering why they were still here. But since his sister wasn't budging, he won't either. No matter how much he wanted to.
