The darkness had only consumed a tiny part of his brain, but slowly it was leaking further and further each day. It wasn’t uncommon for Hector to feel a burning need to kill people, but they were just fleeting thoughts, ones he didn’t act upon. But recently he’d been caving. For example, he daydreamed about ripping the librarian's vocal cord out as she checked out Magnus’ books for him. He wanted to make her suffer before watching her take her final breath. Making people suffer for no reason wasn’t like Hector. He could be barbaric but only to those who deserved it. The librarian didn’t. She flashed him a friendly smile as she handed over the books, he tried to match her warmth, like he hadn’t just been wondering what it would feel like to remove part of her spine and see how long she would live for. He turned his attention to the books, with a grin on his face. ‘A Great and Terrible King: Edward I and the Forging of Britain.’ and ‘The Time Traveller's Guide to Medieval England.’ He flicked through the first few pages of one book with a look of amusement on his face. Oh, Magnus was going to have a field day with these books. Empathy was an emotion he disposed of a long time ago. It was the only way he could successfully run his ship, otherwise his crew would see it as a sign of weakness and there’d be uproar. Empathy was saved for limited people and for some reason Ayla was one of those people. He spotted her sitting at a table alone, typing away on a laptop as he felt a sting of guilt in his chest. He cleared his throat as he approached her table, announcing his presence. “I owe you an apology.” It was easier to just get straight to the point rather than standing there making small talk with her. He placed the books down on the table, taking the seat across from her. “The glass smashing was a problem, but it wasn’t the only reason. I’m sure you know that though… I fired you for your own good.” It was the cold hard selfish truth of the matter. He couldn’t have Ayla working for him when she was able to completely ruin him. They were one sneeze away from him having her killed. AYLA KIRAZ

━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ AYLA FINALLY FOUND A REASON TO GET OUT OF the apartment. It wasn’t only to hand out resumes, either! It was… to work on them, but it didn’t matter, at least she was leaving. The library seemed like the best place to go, as it was quiet, and their wifi was free. Here, she could tidy up her resume and work on her typing skills. She wasn’t so fast, especially not in English, but she was trying her best, and she hoped that counted for something.
It didn’t with her last job, but… that was fine. She had to move forward. Hector’s club wasn’t the only place in town she could work; she had to remind herself of that. It didn’t matter that she’d gotten comfortable there, either… or that she thought Hector was her friend. Or that she’d ruined her relationship with Raik over kissing him. That place didn’t want her, and she was determined to be successful. Even if her fiance’s girlfriend wanted her dead.
Ayla swallowed hard and lifted a hand, touching her neck gently. She frowned, remembering how it’d felt to be trapped, to not have the upper hand in that situation. Usually, Ayla was aware she was far stronger than she looked, but she knew she would’ve died if it wasn’t for Remzi.
She didn’t think that meant he was suddenly interested in marrying her now, but at least now she knew he liked her enough not to let her be killed.
Ayla’s eyes flicked up as a familiar voice dragged her from her thoughts (another distraction from her resume), her body seizing up when she realized it was Hector.
But he was apologizing.
Immediately, her hand dropped to her lap and she shook her head, but Hector was sitting down anyway. He’d hurt her a lot, but she still didn’t think he’d intended to. She understood that he couldn’t keep her around, Ayla just thought… she didn’t know. That he wouldn’t cut her off so heartlessly, putting Mr. Fournier in charge of it.
But Hector was putting it on her now, claiming that Ayla was fired for her own good?! Her brows drew together and she frowned at him. “My own good?” She repeated, already feeling the heat and emotion rush to display itself on her face. “How is firing good for me?” Ayla asked, motioning to her laptop, “Now I sit and search for new job… no one will hiring me. You fire me because you are… ah,” Ayla paused as she searched for the word, then blurted, “Embarrass!” And only lowered her voice when a nearby librarian shushed her. “You are embarrass, and you fire me because I cannot control. I said I am sorry; I wanted to fix. But you not let me! You make me go away!” Tears gathered in her eyes as she remembered how it’d felt when Luc let her go, and then again when Raik judged her for it. “You make me think we are friends.” She practically whimpered, still pained by his betrayal.

Centuries had passed since Evelyn died, but the grief had never disappeared. It had faded, becoming more bearable until Hannya threw a shapeshifter into his path. It left him wondering, did Hannya know about Evelyn? In those moments together in the bedroom she could have found a way to penetrate his mind, searching for a piece of gold until she hit the jackpot with his heartbreak. He spent hours discussing the whole mess with Luc until he came to the conclusion Hannya had nothing to do with it. A demon of jealousy had no interest in causing Hector pain. With each glass of whiskey he knocked back the more he spoke about Evelyn, telling Luc how the world had failed to give him another woman as incredible as her. Karma had maybe wormed its way into his life, but it wasn’t like Magnus had led the perfect life yet he had been blessed with Jo. Being bitter didn’t suit him though and he had to remind himself most of this was his choice. He chose to dismiss every single female who walked into his life, with his standards so ridiculously high. Too high. This was the first person was apologising to for firing and his apology was going down like a lead balloon. A part of him was hoping she’d forgive him so they could move past it and the annoying weight of guilt would lift off his shoulders. Emotion was radiating from Ayla as she snapped at him, frustrating coming first then the tears. Those bloody tears. Hector inhaled sharply, closing his eyes for a second. She promised not to tell anyone what happened, a promise which she had managed to keep, so he wasn’t going to spin her some lame excuse. “Do you want to know the truth Ayla? I would have killed you if you carried on turning into Evelyn… right now you are my greatest weakness and I needed to get you far away from me… so yes, maybe I am a little embarrassed.” He spoke back in Turkish in a low voice, so the librarian wouldn’t shush them again, although he’d probably remove her tongue if she dared to do so. A bit of bloodshed in the library wouldn’t bother anyone, plus it would give him a sense of joy. But he knew it would terrify Ayla, so maybe not. He rarely placed people into the friend category, but apparently Ayla had thrown Hector into her group of friends. Could they be friends? He’d never really had a friend like Ayla. Sweet, caring and kind. “We can still be friends… in fact I’ll even help you to get a job.” He reached forward, turning her laptop to him slowly to find her resume open. “Okay, so firstly we’ll say you worked at the bar for more than two months. Let’s say six months… also you can put me down as a point of reference.” He glanced up at Ayla with a small smile, as he tapped away lightly on the keyboard, “And we’ll say you were head cleaner.” His eyes scanned through the remainder of her resume, “If you want, I can help you to edit this so it reads easier?” He moved the laptop so it was between the pair of them. ━ kadınlar beğenince değil, güvenince âşık olur ━ HECTOR SPOKE IN TURKISH, LEAVING NO room for misunderstanding. He had fired her, and now… he was going to kill her? Well, he certainly hadn’t meant that exactly, but it was still hard for Ayla to hear. She didn’t understand why men━especially vampires━had to be so worried about things like that all of the time, but apparently that was one of life’s great mysteries. Hector was a man who was in charge and, clearly, he intended to stay that way, and never wanted anyone to threaten that position. She wasn’t certain why he thought Ayla would, but she supposed it made sense, in a way. He couldn’t have anyone knowing he had a soft spot━a weakness━and for them to try to get it out of Ayla. In a way, Hector was protecting her, and she thought that was very nice.
Still, he should’ve come to her about this. If they were friends, then Hector should have respected her enough for that. He wasn’t the only person in the world who had feelings, and he should’ve known that.
“Well, at least you admitted it.” She whispered back in Turkish, then nodded curtly━she wasn’t letting him get away with his yet. “Would you have… killed...” She spoke the word under her breath (even though they were speaking another language), “... me for turning into Evelyn? Or simply for knowing?” It seemed harsh, did it not? Tears gathered in her eyes, but Ayla blinked them away. Hector wasn’t going to be the cause of her tears━not again! He didn’t deserve it.
She deserved a better friend, however. And, while she didn’t think Hector could make up for what he’d done, he was certainly eager to try. He was going to help her get a job!
Ayla immediately lit up, her eyes sparkling at Hector. She returned to speaking in English, though she had to remember to stay quiet, “Really?!” She nearly yelped, then glanced at the librarian (who was glaring), and visibly sunk in her seat, smiling sheepishly. “Really?” She repeated, this time whispering, “Thank you very much, Hector. I…” But then Hector wanted to lie, and her eyes widened as she looked at her laptop, then at him.
“You are not telling truth?” She whispered, but couldn’t help the smile that tugged up the edge of her lips. “A reference? Oh, thank you,” Ayla reached over to squeeze his hand, then patted it gently. “It is so good to have friends in America. It is very difficult here.” Ayla nodded somberly, then smiled again, looking at the laptop as Hector put it between them, giggling as he put her down as “head cleaner.” Well, it was his business, correct? So he could write whatever he liked.
Ayla’s head bobbed again, this time excitedly, and leaned into the table. “Yes! Yes, please!” He had definitely made it up to her, but a simple hand pat didn’t feel good enough. Ayla stood from the table and walked to Hector’s side, bending down to hug him. And, once it felt sufficient enough, she plopped herself into the seat next to him so they didn’t have to share the laptop halfway across the table. “What else are we doing to make résumé better?” She asked, smiling sideways at him, “Oh! And do you know any business in Mystic Falls that want Head Cleaner?” She laughed softly, “I am trying Campbell’s Bar, but do not hearing anything. Where else you think I have to go?” She asked, looking into Hector’s eyes, her own filled with immense amounts of hope. If the rest of the things in her life could not go right, she hoped this, at least, could.

Oh dear God Ayla was about to cry. Hector’s hand was twitching to reach forward and comfort her but thankfully she forced the tears back where they belonged. Relief swept over him. “For turning into her especially because you can’t control it. No reasonable person would appreciate it if someone kept turning into their ex-lover unexpectable… I feel uncomfortable that you know but I doubt you’d tell anyone.” Mixture between her being a good person and the fear Hector would kill her for spilling his secret. “Plus there was a chance I’d become hooked on it and be asking you to turn into Evelyn constantly.” Then when the day came she refused he’d snap and kill her. It was awful, but sadly true. She slipped back into English which was probably for the best. There was no way she’d become fluent if she was forever speaking Turkish with him. The librarian's eyes burned into Ayla as she burst with excitement. “Ma’am. Bugger off and leave us be… please.” His smile was sharp as he glared back at the employee. It was a library in Mystic Falls for God sake. Sometimes telling little white lies was completely accepted. “Well… sort of. Everyone lies on their résumé anyway.” If he really picked at some of his employees about what they’d written on their résumés they’d crumble. For example, Lawrence claimed to have several years experience of bar work but often acted like it was his first ever job. It wasn’t like Hector could write to previous employers for references either. “I know… I’ve had to start my life over countless times and it can be difficult particularly when you don’t speak the language.” And probably even worse when you’re sent to a foreign country to marry a man you’ve never met before. It was impressive Ayla was still tolerating the ungroomed vampire. Hector didn’t jump at the opportunity to hug Ayla, but nonetheless he didn’t shy away and even placed his arms lightly around her. It felt strange, but somewhat good. He wasn’t used to people hugging him. Even the women he brought back to his apartment he wouldn’t hug before ushering them out the door the same night. He’d spent centuries shutting everyone out that he’d forgotten what it felt like to receive endearment from a person. “You’ve used some future tense here when outlining your job role. It should all be past tense.” He shot her a quick look before turning his attention back to the laptop, “See here you’ve said ‘I will.’ it should be ‘I was’.” He pointed to the screen before editing the section. “You don’t wanna be working at Campbells Bar… I’ve heard bad things about the owner.” Small white lie, but he’d already had the pleasure of meeting Olivia when she threatened to destroy his club. “I know someone who’s just bought the casino in town. I can have a chat with him, see if he is hiring.” Twist Pierre’s arm until he agrees to hire Ayla. AYLA KIRAZ - end here?
